Review: Periphery’s New Album “Clear”

Periphery has just recently released their newest album “Clear”. Just for starters, this may just be their finest album yet. The album is not overly done with utter ridiculousness and since its only a total of seven songs, it is just the right length where it never losses your attention.

The first song off of the album is called “Overture” and it is mainly just piano with a some slow drawn out guitar and drums. The Piano ends up picking up speed for a only a few seconds then falls back into a more gracious melody. Then album really gets started with some very tight riffs in usual Periphery fashion with “The Summer Jam”. The instrumental is always killer with Periphery but the vocals were what caught my attention this time around. Everything was right on key and it covered a lot of vocal range (which is done quite well throughout the album).

“Feed the Ground” is the next song on the track listing and this is without question the best song on the album. The drums and bass lines were just absolutely killer on this track. It starts off with a type of metal groove and all of a sudden it picks up the pace right before they switched to a heavy breakdown. This song has everything you could ever want in a song and you might never take it off repeat after you listen to it.

The next song is called “Zero” and it reminds you a lot of the old school Periphery songs with their very intricate time signatures and such. This song is nothing but instrumental and when you listen to it, you will understand why. Even without any vocals, this song is really cool to just sit back and listen to.

“The Parade of Ashes” starts off with some heavy faster chugging riffs and tight drum beats. When the chorus kicks in, it is hard to explain, but it has a very old school rock sound to it that just makes you want to dance. It is very upbeat and this song is a really great build up song. The second half of this song gets quicker and adds in an Avenged Sevenfold sounding guitar solo which really brought the song together before going back to their groovy chorus line.

To finish up the album, they end it with “Extraneous” and “Pale Aura”. The first of the two, “Extraneous”, has a very odd drum beat that is all bass, toms, and snare. The guitars and bass all have very odd sounds to them as well and after a short bit, they all pull together for the faster part before slowing it all back down to a breakdown. “Pale Aura” ends the album with a lot more screaming vocals then the rest of the album and even adds some killer blast beats. This might be the tightest track on the entire album with the quick switches from fast and slow parts without any sort of pause. The last two minutes of the song they start to slow it down and end the album with a little bit of piano and some very soft guitar.

Periphery’s album “Clear” from front to back was just simply excellent. In my personal opinion it is their best work yet. The vocals were phenomenal, the guitars and bass were very tight, and the drums were insane as always. If their is any album you want to go out a buy right now, it is this one without question. You will not be disappointed.

12 Foot Ninja: The Band You Need To Fear

Not a week, if not day, goes by that I am not asked, “Hey man, any cool new bands on the scene?”.  Of course there are so many depending on your likes and tastes.  As an owner/editor of a music magblog I get tons of requests daily to check out new stuff and to promote things and I truly like a lot of it since I am a music addict.  But, the ones that I find most special are the artists that come my way from my friends who are not promo-ing someone, just sharing their love for music with another.  One of those bands that came my ears’ way was through a good friend who happens to be friends with the guys in Periphery who recommended 12 Foot Ninja from Australia.

From the first time you hear them, or hear about them, you will get direct comparisons to Mike Patton and Faith No More…and that is a great thing and a great compliment.  The diverse styles of music that 12 Ft. Ninjas throw into their music is insane and fit into places that don’t seem like they would make sense, but somehow absolutely make sense.  The update on what Faith No More did is readily apparent, taking the technology of today and their musical prowess into the new age of music.

They have recently hit The States with a smattering of support dates and were very recently on Sirius XM speaking to Jose Mangin while they were in New York (and even stayed at his house).  I’m going to go out on a very secure limb here and say that these guys are going to be very big here.  All they need is the a few good support tours and the right promotion and they will be HUGE.  Check them out here…

“In 2008 & 2009, I created a touring package called “Progressive Nation” and with Dream Theater headlining, we did three full tours (two in North America and one in Europe) that showcased a variety of bands that embraced the spirit and musicality of progressive music.

THE OCEAN Prepares For Summer Slaughter

Progressive sound contortionists THE OCEAN will return to North America as part of the seventh annual Summer Slaughter Tour later this month. Presented by Indie Merch Store, ESP and Guitar World, the band level stages nightly alongside the likes of The Dillinger Escape Plan, Animals As Leaders, Periphery, Norma Jean, Cattle Decapitation, Revocation, Aeon and more. Following their Stateside takeover, THE OCEAN will play select shows throughout Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Russia with an additional European sprint in the Fall to be announced in the coming weeks.

Comments guitarist Robin Staps,“We’re stoked to get out on the road again! When I started this band 12 years ago, I would have never expected that it would eventually become possible for us one day, to play shows in Sichuan, China, or near the Baikal Lake in Siberia. These will be our first shows ever in Mexico and Taiwan, too. Good times ahead, see you people out there on one of these continents tasting your local beer and food!”

In the meantime, check out a clip of vocalist Loïc Rossetti performing with Dillinger in 2010HERE.

THE OCEAN will be touring in support of Pelagial, their critically lauded, maritime-themed studio offering, which entered the Billboard Heatseekers Chart at #10 upon its first week of release!

Their most profound work to date, Pelagial is a 53-minute exploratory composition written, recorded, mixed and intended to-be-performed-live as one single piece of music. Centered around all five pelagic depth zones — epipelagic, mesopelagic, bathyalpelagic, abyssopelagic, and hadopelagic – Pelagial purposefully submerges its listeners into an aquatic journey that is at once tranquil and terrifying. Pelagial begins rather light and becomes progressively heavier and slower as the band reaches the unfathomable depths of the hadopelagic zone, characterized by complete darkness and a thousandfold increased pressure as compared to surface level. Said Decibel Magazine, “Where the band was once steeped in sludgy noise/metalcore with orchestral interludes, they’ve become more luxurious, experimental and textural. Pelagial…further continues that shift, working on multi-tiered levels and drawing from DEP-inspired chaos, Opeth-like moods and Between The Buried And Me genre fiddling. It’s an album that strives to be all things at once without crossing into a ‘look-at-me’ mess.”

Order your copy of Pelagial at: http://www.theoceancollective.com/pelagial. Additionally, you can nab special THE OCEAN Pelagial World Tour 2013 T-shirts and posters via Pelagic Records at the following locations http://www.pelagic-records.com/tshirts andhttp://www.pelagic-records.com/poster.

***THE OCEAN headlining shows

“The sixth album from German post-metal doombringers THE OCEAN is huge… In the course of the record, tender piano interludes get stomped on by Mastodon-shaped footprints, lush strings work next to bulldozing double-kick work, and, at the end, the submarine crashes at Melvins tempos.” – Spin

“…a hallmark album for a gifted team of artisans…Pelagial is one of the most invested albums THE OCEAN has yet conceived. Prepare to be not only submerged but actually touched by this album.” — Blabbermouth

“Pelagial is brilliantly written, expertly executed and filled with the kind of songwriting most bands can only dream of.” – Crave Online

“Pelagial resonates so deeply because its sonic continuity is matched with shifting, unified composition. The album viscerally depicts the spectrum of submersion while highlighting the musicians’ versatility and cohesion. The band has never written more intriguing music, and THE OCEAN COLLECTIVEhas never been a more apt name.” – MetalSucks

“…a journey within itself…” — Metal Insider

“…destined to be one of the year’s best releases.” – Echoes And Dust

“Creating music with a real meaning cannot be taken as a hobby. Either you put everything into it and make your message known or you don’t. Their correlation between diving deeper into the ocean and diving into the inner workings of the human mind is astounding…you would be a complete fool to not pick up this true work of art.” – New Noise Magazine

TESSERACT REHEARSING FOR UPCOMING TOUR, POSTS NEW MUSIC

UK’s progressive rock band TESSERACT has released another video promoting their UK and European tour dates, this time featuring a sample from their “Retrospect” track. The band took a break from their rehearsals to comment:

As the release of Altered State draws closer, our attention turns away from production and to reproduction: performing this album on stage. Rehearsals have been going really well, and Ashe is just showing us old hacks up, as he’s nailing the parts each day in his free and effortless fashion that drew our attention to him in the first place. It’s a very different approach that we have to take for the new tracks, as they are less about individual performances and more about a cohesive and superior whole.  But we’re confident we’ve got it right and can’t wait to get out there again to share it with our friends, wherever you may be.

Altered State‘ will be TESSERACT‘s sophomore full-length album and will be released on May 28, 2013 in North America via Century Media Records.  Divided into four movements: Of MatterOf MindOf Reality and Of Energy, ‘Altered State‘ represents the transformations that TESSERACThas gone through over the past few years.  The Law of Conservation of Energy states that: In a closed system energy is conserved, nothing is lost. THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN will release One of Us is the Killer in May

The trailblazing band, whose creative energy and unwavering artistic commitment has reverberated through underground subculture and in tastemaker circles alike since the late 1990s, return with renewed passion and unrivaled skill with their fifth full-length album.

One of Us is the Killer is set to be released through the band’s own Party Smasher Inc., in partnership with Sumerian Records (Animals As Leaders, The Faceless, Periphery) in North America. Party Smasher’s partnership with BMG covers the rest of the world, including licensing deals with Grind House (Helmet, Cancer Bats, Funeral For A Friend) for Japan and Remote Control (Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, MIA) in Australia.

The new Dillinger Escape Plan album was recorded in Southern California with longtime producer Steve Evetts (Glassjaw, The Cure, Suicide Silence), with additional production at guitarist/co-founder Ben Weinman’s studio. Mastering will be handled by Tom Baker (Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Beastie Boys).

The album represents a new holistic pinnacle of the band’s constantly evolving and engaging dynamics. The band will launch worldwide tours in 2013, beginning with a handful of headlining dates that have just been released.

Dillinger’s mind-bending meld of metal, rock, experimental ambience and melody first reared its head with a 6 track EP on hardcore indie Now Or Never Records, quickly followed by Under the Running Board on Relapse. The band earned a reputation as a fearless act on the live stage, committing their minds, bodies and spirits to the exhibition and visceral release of performance and often brutalizing stages, gear and themselves along the way. Calculating Infinity became the gold standard for the emerging “math-core”/”math-metal” movement, earning a place in author Martin Popoff’s “Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time.” Kerrang! included the album in the “100 Best Rock Albums of All Time” and presented the band with their Spirit of Independence Award.

Mike Patton invited the band out on tour with Mr. Bungle, which eventually resulted in the collaborative EP on Epitaph Records, Irony is a Dead Scene. Miss Machine blew the doors open further, cementing the band’s legacy around the world with jaw-dropping performances at festivals and all over the road. It also began the creative partnership between Weinman (one of Spin Magazine’s 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, AP’s 10 Best Guitar Slingers and Guitar World’s Top 25 Cult Guitarists) and vocalist Greg Puciato, whose uncompromising stage presence and versatile vocal ability knows no boundaries. Revolver Magazine included him on their list of the Greatest Metal Frontmen Of All Time.

Ire Works saw the band making their national television debut on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, as well as multiple international tours, which included a stop at the Soundwave Festival where Nine Inch Nails invited them on-stage to perform “Wish.” The band’s collaborative nature persists, with members of Dillinger collaborating both on-stage and off with members of System Of A Down, Mastodon, Jane’s Addiction, Deftones, Kimbra, Wyclef Jean, Puscifer, Mars Volta and Devin Townsend, among others, in addition to Weinman’s work scoring films and more.

Option Paralysis was the first official release through Party Smasher Inc., with distribution through Season Of Mist. Revolver Magazine awarded them a Golden Gods award as “Best Underground Band,” even as VH1’s Metal Evolution declared them “the world’s most dangerous band.”

One of Us is the Killer finds Weinman, Puciato, longtime bassist Liam Wilson and drummer Billy Rymer in top form, emphasizing Dillinger Escape Plan’s fierce independence, staunch individualism and loyalty to their unique vision which has long followed them on-stage and off.

This new era in The Dillinger Escape Plan begins now. In the coming weeks, look for more information surrounding the album and tours. Party Smasher Inc. will be home to innovative releases from Dillinger, associated projects and other band curated work in the coming years.

PMM’s Top 5 Metal Releases of 2012

2012 has been a pretty amazing year for Pittsburgh Music Magazine, hell it was the year of our inception. Many of you may have noticed that although we cover all genres around here, two of our writers are pretty serious metalheads. To try to narrow down the top 5 metal moments of 2012 is a pretty hard task, it was a very good year for releases in the genre that very few are brave enough to adore outloud and even fewer truly understand. Metal has progressed and has so many classifications at this point that one needs Sam Dunne’s charts from VH1 and Wikipedia just to wade through it all. Trust this writer, it has been an amazing year in music, and just keeping up with all that is going on in the little niche of tunes I adore can be no small task. So with further adieu, here are PMM’s Top 5 Metal Masterpieces of 2012:

betweentheburiedandme2012
1. Hands down without a doubt, Between the Buried and Me’s: The Parallax 2 Future Sequence is the metal record of the year. With an unbelievable mix of prog metal mastery, this band refuses to slow down and seems to only get better. Many of their peers think the same, just check out some different band comments on Facebook (i.e. Mike Portney (Faith No More/ Ozzy) or Scott Cowan (Deception of a Ghost)). Brutal one second, soothing the next, piercing and thought provoking all the next…don’t miss this one whatever you do.

2. The “comeback” of the year was The Deftones. Many of you probably expected me to say Soundgarden, and that is definitely honorable mention, but Chino and crew have come back with a vengeance. Koi No Yokan is the best since White Pony and is ear bending from first note…like they never went away. Sickeningly talented and devastatingly brilliant.

3. Witchcraft, the little doom/stoner rock band from Sweden, swept me off my feet this year with Legend. A bit Queens of the Stone Age meets Sabbath and Deep Purple thrown in with some Soundgarden grungy mix. It’s 70’s metal with a new twist.

4. French metallers Gojira provided the soundtrack for our trip from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to catch this years Mayhem Festival. Un-freakin-believable. I still can’t get enough of this record and everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I discover more. Best thing they have ever put out to date, solid from end to end.

5. So many could sit at this spot. And I am going to totally cheat…a four way tie. Periphery, Battlecross, The HAARP Machine, and Deception of a Ghost are all “newer” bands that have infected me this year and made me a loyal fan. Please check these guys out and tell them we sent you when you go see them…for they all bring it big time live. Go buy ALL their CD’s now- you won’t regret it!

Between the Buried and Me: The Parallax 2: Future Sequence Could Be The Metal Release of the Year

If you have spoken music to our COO, Alan, lately you have probably heard him raving over Between The Buried and Me’s latest release, The Parralax 2: Future Sequence. “Killer, crushing, mind blowing, Thelonious Monk meets Maiden/Rush/Prong’s love child meets melting your face, THEE release of 2012…”- the guy won’t stop talking about it. And for good reason, this effort is five star plus with no reservations.

Unfortunately for BTBAM, the day their latest came out we got this tough touring news update- “Between The Buried And Me’s bus caught fire this morning in England. There are no injuries and no equipment was damaged. There is no effect on the band’s tour. Tour manager Courtney Warner adds: “As of now, we are at a service area awaiting transportation to a hotel. A new bus is on its way. We shouldn’t miss any shows because of this. All gear, luggage, personal items and most importantly, people, are all good. We just stink like smoke.”

Paul Waggoner elaborates: “Fuel line done broke. Dadgum flame come shootin out. Peeewwww eeehhhhh sometin’ stank. Crazy British feller come hollerin, “Bus on fire, ya’ll git.” Climb up the ol’ hill barefoot and look back at them flames shootin sky high. Firemen folk come rushin up real quick like and squirt that fire plum out. It was lucky nobody was hurt, not even a stubbed toe. Luggage stank like a Mississippi cow pie on a mid-July heat.

Hopefull, come tomorra, a new horse n’ buggy come. We’ll giddy on up to Belgium town for a good ol’ fashioned hootnanny.

Whoo-Doggies!!!”

The 12-track album was described by Tommy Rogers (vocals, keyboards) as: “A conceptual journey that takes the listener to worlds that seem familiar and worlds that make you scratch your head.” The band’s 2011 predecessor, The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues EP, laid the groundwork for the story behind the Parallax releases, Prospect I and Prospect II.

Listen to what others are saying:

Loudwire described The Parallax II as “quintessentially brilliant,” while awarding the release a perfect score. Alternative Press said the band “continue to dominate progressive metal” and are musically “expanding on every already-top-notch aspect.” Outburn called the album “otherworldly,” while Decibel added that BTBAM are “one of progressive metal’s most singular, unique and genuinely progressive bands.”

Do us a favor here at PMM- check them out, get Parallax 2, and get our boss to stop already- he had us at Between The Buried and Me.

A number of aural and visual clips have been released leading up to the release with the most recent addition audio clips from the entire release, which can be found here: http://youtu.be/HFTbp3UFmyE. The band has also released a stunning, effects laden video for “Astral Body” and a series of instructional videos (guitar, bass and drums) for “Telos”: http://youtu.be/qQZmTXCSO00.

THE SAFETY FIRE has always pushed the boundaries of technical, progressive metal since their inception. With their expansive atmospheres and soaring melodies, it’s easy to see why vocalist Sean McWeeney, bassist Lori Peri, drummer Calvin Smith and guitarists Derya “Dez” Nagle & Joaquin “Jo” Ardiles are now at the forefront of their ever growing genre.

“Right now the UK progressive metal scene is extremely healthy, and the emergence of THE SAFETY FIRE is about to provide another boost.” — METAL HAMMER

“Complex forwarding thinking metal… You have to be pretty damned good to stand out from the crowd these days. London crowd THE SAFETY FIRE do so by using the oldest trick in the book – by writing proper, solid songs.” — ROCKSOUND

“If you’re on the lookout for great progressive metal in 2012, these guys come highly recommended.” — GUITAR WORLD

“Imagine a startling mix of AT THE DRIVE IN and KARNIVOOL , melded to the fluid harmonics of THE MARS VOLTA,the distracting glories of BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and the sonic flows of CIRCLES…The album is a tempestuous maelstrom of consuming emotions and atmospheres layered upon polyrhythmic disinterested structures and expansive and attention grabbing melodies and vocal harmonies.” — THIS IS NOT A SCENE

“‘Grind The Ocean’ is soothing yet fierce, familiar yet unexpected, and a great debut.” — HEAVY BLOG IS HEAVY

“THE SAFETY FIRE’s music is dynamic and diverse throughout each song, able to capture and maintain a listener’s attention across their multiple 6-minute epics.” — METAL SUCKS
