Kreator hits Pittsburgh with latest release “Dying Alive” November 4 @ Altar Bar

The legends of Thrash Tour 2013 hits Altar Bar with the likes of Kreator, Overkill, and Warbringer on November 4.  The headliner, Kreator, has quite the apt name in that many attribute the band as one of the true forerunners of death metal.  The thrash metal band originated way back in 1982 in Essen, Germany and has been cranking out their brand since with only little variation in the nineties.   Featured vocalist/guitarist Mille Petrozza has been there since the beginning and is the sole remaining original member, but since their resurgence in 2001 Sami Yli-Sirniö on guitar, Jürgen “Ventor” Reil on drums, and Christian “Speesy” Giesler on bass have remained intact and proven themselves as a solidified group.

On their latest release, “Dying Alive”, Kreator gives their fans live tracks and a live DVD full of goodies.  This should fire up any fan as they anticipate seeing them on tour.  The sold-out show was filmed by 24 cameras, guitar-cams and even moshpit-cams were used to record this live document.  It’s ninety minutes of pure on stage thrash mayhem, 3 video clips and an in-depth backstage documentary (which is truly a treat).

„This show on December 22, 2012 was something special for us. One day after the officially announced apocalypse the homecoming show at Turbinenhalle was really intense. Before that we were touring on various continents and played some really special gigs. But none of them was as energized. Fans from all over Germany, Belgium and Holland came to make this DVD something magical. We can rely on our fans and on concerts in the ruhr area anyway. While editing the footage I realized how great all came into place that December night. Thanks to all the fans! This DVD is for you!“ – Mille Petrozza

What struck me immediately while viewing the DVD, was the feeling of being at the show.  Many times the lackluster MTV video-like feel of live leaves the viewer with a flat voyeuristic feeling rather than immersive.  You feel part of the audience, part of the crew, part of the band, plus the blending of the screen visuals was literally chilling.  The camera angle switches pace as fast as the music creating a frenetic buzz for any true metal lover.  The stage dives, mosh pit maniacs, percussion like lighting, merch table madness, and the aftermath clean-up all add to the feeling of actually being there.  Bands should take note of what Kreator has produced for their fans, including the bonuses, and up the ante for all of us.

Overkill released “The Electric Age” last year to much critical acclaim.

The record debuted on theBILLBOARD TOP 200 Chart at #73 with approximately 6,700 units sold. To compare, the band’s prior release “Ironbound” sold roughly 4,500 copies first week and debuted at #192 making “The Electric Age” the highest charting first week album since their 1994 record “W.F.O.

“The Electric Age picks up where Ironbound left off a couple years back, maintaining the speed and ferocity of that release while throwing in some even more brutal riffs for good measure.”– Outburn Magazine

“Containing more hooks than the average Lamb of God record, this Age is one we wouldn’t mind living in.” – Revolver Magazine

“Sixteen albums in, these dudes are not only still fired up; they’re practicing their craft at the peak of their skills, with no signs of slowing down.” – Decibel Magazine

Testament Announce U.S. Headlining Tour

Bay Area thrash metal legends, TESTAMENT, are proud to announce their first U.S. headlining tour since their phenomenal chart success with their new album, Dark Roots of Earth. The trek promises to be one of the best thrash metal lineups of the year, with support coming from the world renowned OVERKILL and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM, as well as Australian thrashers 4ARM.

“It’s a thrill to announce our upcoming dates with OVERKILL and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM,” commented guitarist Alex Skolnick. “It’s a tour that brings together three different metal bands from three different regions: West Coast, East Coast and Southwest. All three bands sound very different from one another yet are highly compatible. All have been around the block (and the world) a few times and all have managed to keep a sound that feels current. This tour will be a ‘must see’ for fans who remember the early days of thrash/speed metal as well as those whose age is younger than the genre itself.”

VIP packages are now available for each show but will be on a limited basis per gig.

VIP ticket packages will include the following:

New Jersey Writer/Author BRIAN ABERBACK Pens New Educational Unauthorized Rockography, “BLACK SABBATH: Pioneers of Heavy Metal”

Esteemed New Jersey writer and author BRIAN ABERBACK has penned a new, educational Black Sabbath book, being released with Enslow Publishers, Inc. The book, titled Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal, is an unauthorized “rockography” that transforms the extensive knowledge about Black Sabbath that Aberback has amassed over the years to the page for future music enthusiasts and students alike to enjoy.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is the only Black Sabbath biography written for middle and high school students. Thoroughly researched, annotated and highly informative, this book is an appealing read for all ages and a great way for parents to introduce their kids to some of the music they love and grew up with. This book chronicles one of rock’s most legendary band’s careers from its formation to the present day and does a superb job of conveying the group’s ups and downs, not glossing over any details while staying age-appropriate. Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is available in high-quality library bound hardcover as well as softcover editions and can be found wherever books are sold online.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal has already been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives and sits on the shelves of libraries throughout the United States to New Zealand, Singapore and the United States Army Base in Heidelberg, Germany.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is part of The Rebels of Rock series from Enslow Publishing Inc. The Rebels of Rock books have a list price of $31.93 and a 25% discount price for Schools and Libraries of $23.95. Other books in The Rebels of Rock series include “rockographies” on Aerosmith, Def Leppard, The Clash, The Ramones, and The Rolling Stones.

BRIAN ABERBACK is a veteran music journalist specializing in hard rock and heavy metal. Aberback’s encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal and hard rock spans numerous genres. His interview list is a who’s who of heavy metal and hard rock legends, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament and Mercyful Fate. His work has appeared in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and on news and music websites. Many of his stories have been published in The Record, the largest daily newspaper in Northern New Jersey.

What sets Aberback apart, in addition to his strong writing style and dedication to his craft, has been his passion for giving heavy metal bands a shot at attracting new audiences through mainstream newspaper exposure. Over the years he’s introduced such bands as Nile, Cradle of Filth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and many, many more, through the pages of The Record and other publications, to music fans, and even metal fans, who likely would have never heard of these bands. Not often do you find daily newspaper writers publishing stories about the likes of D.R.I., Diamond Head, Everytime I Die, Iced Earth or The Gathering.

***An articulate and well-informed speaker with a vast knowledge of the history of rock-and-roll, musically and socially, with a specific emphasis on heavy metal and hard rock, BRIAN ABERBACK is available for book talks, panel discussions and as an expert commentator for television and radio programs.

Check out some great reviews on Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal:

“Refreshingly levelheaded and loaded with sourced quotes, it’s that rare middle-grade biography (or “rockography,” as the title page insists) that is able to trace a band’s history, revel in its rock awesomeness, and be blunt about such things as drug abuse, all the while keeping things at an age-appropriate keel.”

“Through this book, old and new fans alike learn about the band’s history and impact on the music industry.”

Future of History Making PYRAMID SOUND STUDIOS Remains Uncertain

The fate of PYRAMID SOUND STUDIOS, a recording studio world-renowned for spawning the onslaught of American heavy metal in the 1980’s and beyond, has quickly captured the attention of long-time Ithaca, NY residents, recording artists, and friends of business owner Alex Perialas.
At Wednesday’s Planning and Economic Development Committee meeting, several local musicians and educators urged city officials to take demolition of the studio off the table.

PYRAMID SOUND STUDIOS, launched by Perialas in 1974, has recorded artists from Bad Religion, Anthrax, Testament, Overkill, Agnostic Front and Brian Wilson to local favorites The Horse Flies and Donna the Buffalo, as well as student projects. PYRAMID SOUND STUDIOS is a pinnacle in the local area, being that local musicians do not always have the ability to travel to New York City, Los Angeles, etc. to record their albums. Located directly next to the Clinton St. Bridge, which is undergoing heavy construction until November, the building is at risk of being condemned as a result of the project, stirring alarm among the local and online community.

“This is one of those things that is a state and city project where they’re replacing a 70-year-old bridge and its right in our footprint, if you will. With the building of this new bridge, there’s a chance that if they aren’t careful, they could do damage to the studio,” states owner Alex Perialas. “I’m currently working with the administration to land on an amicable solution to the situation. This has been a landmark facility for years. We pretty much created a style of music here that people had never heard of before. It would be a shame to lose such an integral part of music history due to this temporary construction.”

Jeff Klaus, professor of education at Ithaca College and member of The Horse Flies, addressed the committee Wednesday, “What is housed inside that scruffy building is a building within a building that’s purpose-built to be a studio.”

Klaus and his colleagues noted that 109 E. Clinton St. is a commercial garage space, which is located closest to the bridge project, while the recording studio is located at 105 E. Clinton St. The supporters stressed that the garage and the studio are two separate buildings, though it may not appear so on the outside.

In many ways, both the mayor’s and the common council’s hands are tied, given that the construction on the Clinton St. bridge is federally funded. Earlier this week, supporters of PYRAMID SOUND STUDIOS launched an online petition to help save the historical building. Thus far, over 550 people have signed. You can sign the petition at this location.

Rock Photographer JEREMY SAFFER Teams Up with SoundCheck Hollywood for “Capturing Music: A Music Photography Seminar” — June 23-24 at the SoundCheck Store

After a successful month of spearheading photo shoots with Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, Miss May I, Dragonforce, Overkill, Watain, Behemoth, Baroness, and The Agonist, completing two back-to-back magazine cover shoots (Outburn and Hails and Horns), all the while having one cover already on shelves (Hails and Horns), Jeremy will be heading out to L.A. for his first west coast music photography seminar in conjunction with SoundCheck Hollywood.

The two-day seminar and workshop will focus on portrait work with musicians and will cover the entire process—from setting up the photo shoot, scouting locations, posing, different types of lighting and lighting equipment for different situations, shooting endorsements, promotional images, CD layouts, and magazine layouts, to walking attendees through the process of what to do post-shoot, invoicing, getting repeat business, and even how to price yourself. Many other business aspects of being a professional photographer within the music industry will be discussed.

The first day will be the official seminar day, where all of the above is taught in the morning, as well as a lightroom and photoshop post processing tutorial. In the afternoon of day one, attendees will complete mock-photo shoots experimenting with different types of lighting equipment, lighting set-ups, poses, etc. Jeremy has also expanded the music photography business section even more, and will also include private portfolio critique for attendees that specifically request it.

On the second day of the seminar, attendees will experience a hands-on photo shoot of special guest bands done first by Jeremy (as a real-life example), and next by themselves! Attendees will take over and complete a real photo shoot with the band in various locations.

Hopeful attendees must act now; there are only 10 tickets available to this seminar!

On June 23rd at 6pm, SoundCheck Hollywood will re-open to the public. Jeremy will be on-site signing copies of his book Bring The Noise, as well as limited edition prints and some prints exclusive to the seminar weekend.
