Broken Social Scene playing Pittsburgh Byham Theater with Frightened Rabbit on October 1

Following a wave of praise for the release of Broken Social Scene‘s newest album Hug of Thunder, the band will set off on a Fall tour of North America later next month.

Broken Social Scene‘s long-awaited return has proven worth the wait for critics and fans alike. Pitchfork gave the album its coveted Best New Music honor, writing, “On their first album in seven yearsBroken Social Scene distill their sound to a vital essence. The band is focused and renewed, invigorated by the missionary spirit of their best work.” The New York Times wrote, “Broken Social Scene‘s music rejoices in what clever teamwork can construct.” NPR also agreed, saying “Hug of Thunder does not skimp.”
Produced by Joe Chiccarelli with Nyles Spencer and mixed by Shawn EverettHug Of Thunder is everything BSS fans love from the Canadian collective and then some, an album overflowing with glorious open chords, multi-voice harmonies, spacious psychedelia-tinted breakdowns, and more.  It is a panoramic, expansive album that manages to be both epic and intimate; and like all things BSS, in troubled times, it offers a serotonin rush of positivity.  Since their inception in the early Aughts, BSS has always pushed sonic boundaries while remaining reverent of a perfect chorus; almost twenty years down the line, Hug Of Thunder sharpens that balance.  The record’s twelve songs refract the band’s varying emotions, methods, and techniques in ways that not only reference their other albums but surpass them.  Hug Of Thunder is righteous but warm, angry but loving, melodic but uncompromising.  And if you’ve ever fallen in love with Broken Social Scene – as many of us have – it is a perfect return that was truly worth the wait.

Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas playing @Smiling Moose on October 10th

Jessica is on the road in support of her critically acclaimed sophomore album “Telephone / Telefono,” a bilingual recording that sees Jessica upping the ante on her already one-of-a-kind sound-clash of pop, psychedelic rock and punk cabaret, with fresh and emotive Spanish and English recordings.
Jessica fuses “the ska/punk ethos of Save Ferris and the roaring range of Amy Winehouse” – Noisey
A second generation Cuban and Mexican-American, Jessica felt it her duty to further explore her own Hispanic heritage on the band’s new record. Jessica pushed herself to use Spanish in ways she had never previously attempted; rewriting songs with the invaluable aid of her mates in Mexico City, paying close attention to the song’s translations, sentence structure and phrasing.
NPR’s Alt Latino says “Telephone/Teléfono, will no doubt appeal to fans across several continents as Hernandez created the songs in both English and Spanish versions … [songs] ‘Hummingbird’/‘Colibrí’ highlights how beautifully Hernandez manages this delicate balancing act — and, while she’s at it, warms up Motown-infused garage-rock with touches of tropical psych-cumbia and punk cabaret.”
Check out the official videos for the Paste Magazine approved new songs “Run Too Far” and “Hot Damn.”
“Ever since we heard the sliding horns of 2014’s ‘Sorry I Stole Your Man,’ we’ve paid witness to Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas’ experimentations with soul and burlesque rock ’n’ roll. Now, that distinctive sound is being employed to explore the resistant power of language.” – Remezcla
“Telephone / Telefono” is the follow up to Jessica’s acclaimed debut “Secret Evil” which NPR raved “has it all” and “song after song, one thing is consistent: a powerful, undeniable voice.”

Beach Slang Performing in Pittsburgh Oct 22 @Cattivo

Philadelphia‘s Beach Slang just celebrated the release of their new album A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelingsout now. Last year, the band released their debut album The Things We Do To Find People Like Us. Beach Slang is performing in Pittsburgh on Oct 22 @ Cattivo.

The band has shared the video for their single “Atom Bomb.” Noisey premiered the bombastic track, calling it “the fastest rager from A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings.”
Beach Slang’s second full-length is a crash-and-thunder collection of songs about what it takes to keep yourself going, to make it through the rest of the night-hell, through the rest of your youth-and beyond.  Frontman James Alex wrote much of A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings on their first album’s support tour, during which he spent a lot of time with the kids who’d picked up the record.
The band previously shared the song “Punks in Disco Bar”. The video was described byNPR as “…a glimpse into what it’s like to be young, misunderstood and out of place, yet finding belonging in each other. It’s the perfect complement to “Punks In A Disco Bar” and an ode to the motifs and life-affirming mission of Beach Slang.” Watch it HERE.

Nice things said about “Punks in a Disco Bar”;
“The song will certainly be instantly recognizable to fans of the band’s previous work, with the same never-caring, heart-punching, loud-things-loving lyrics and thick Minneapolis-style riffing of Beach Slang’s debut LP – if a touch wearier than last time out.” – Spin
“the heart-on-the-sleeve punks have already become the kind of band that fans rush to get tattooed all over their bodies. Well, those fans had better make room for some new ink…”
“We need endorphin-heavy, heart-on-sleeve, major-chord, grin-inducing punk rock right now. I mean we need it. There’s a goddamn duty of care: punk has to hold people to account and spit against authority, but sometimes you need to smile like an idiot and let go.” – Noisey
“This new track seeps with feelings of youth and their accompanying frustration. Very punk guitar drowns the entire two minutes and 41 seconds, and the vocals don’t hold anything back. It’s just what you’d expect from a song called “Punks In A Disco Bar,” and that’s not a bad thing.” WXPN

“Lover” Live Video Revealed w/ NPR’s WNYC

Performing LIVE In NYC!

3/10: New York, NY @ Le Poisson Rouge, 10pm

Debut Album Golden Age Out Now via OKeh

“virtuoso young jazz guitarist with a deep, developed tone and a silvery technical command.”
– The New York Times

” …off-center chords and steady beat of opener “Lights” could make you think of Sonic Youth in a quieter moment.”
– The Boston Globe

“…tangled corners that recall the jazzier tributaries of ‘90s post-rock.”
– The Los Angeles Times

“…the next big jazz guitarist.”
Guitarist Nir Felder’s debut album Golden Age was released January 21st via OKeh.Golden Age puts Nir’s skills as a composer and songwriter at the forefront of his creative design, supported by virtuosic technique. To experience Nir Felder’s live performance is at once both technically fascinating and charming. With rave reviews across the board for the record, today we share a live video of album track “Lover” which premiered withNPR’s WNYC. Watch the “Lover” live video HERE, and we encourage you to post & share!

Though not a concept album, the title Golden Age provides a unifying sentiment- one of ambiguity & duality. As Nir explains, “it’s more of a question than a statement. We’ve seen a lot of change in recent years- in the music industry, in music technology, in our world, our country, and our city, New York.” The album deals with “nostalgia for the 1980s and early ‘90s, when times were rough and unsafe but art and culture were flourishing. Was that a ‘golden age’? Is this one? Has there really ever been one?The question is always, according to whom? So, there is a lack of clarity about whether things are going great or they’re really bad, and the music reflects that.”

Nir recruited pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Matt Penman & drummer Nate Smith to help bring his unique musical vision to life. To augment the band’s instrumental take on those questions, he studied dozens of legendary speeches by politicians, civil rights leaders & cultural heroes, and mixed spoken-word samples from Barbara JordanJesse Jackson,Hilary ClintonMalcolm XRichard Nixon & others into the new tracks. The results aresweeping, cinematic impressions of history brought into the present moment.

NPR is hosting an exclusive premiere of a new song from Epitome of Torture. Get a first listen to the song “Stigmatized” HERE.

Epitome of Torture can be pre-ordered on Amazon on CD and LP and as a digital download on iTunes.

Epitome Of Torture was produced by Waldemar Sorychta, whose expertise as a sound engineer and audio magician thoroughly benefitted Sodom’s 2010 release In War And Pieces. Tom Angelripper: “Waldemar is an exceptional producer, who always succeeds in evening out an artist´s weak spot and promoting his strengths. He doesn’t let you get away with anything, he knows all our weak spots. Which occasionally makes working at the studio a little demanding, but at the end of the day it’s all worthwhile, as the result shows.” The SODOM frontman describes the sound on Epitome Of Torture as “hard-as-nails and contemporary, without ignoring our tried-and-tested old-school attitude.”

A trailer for Epitome of Torture can be viewed HERE.

A video clip for the new song “Stigmatized” in support of Epitome Of Torture together with director Ronald Matthes and the ROAX Team (Sodom: Lords of Depravity Vol 1+2, Volbeat, The BossHoss, W:O:A – to name but a few),  was shot recently in Berlin. SODOM haven’t had an official video clip for some time, so it’s about time we did one,” Tom Angelripper confesses. “That’s why the mini film will be uncompromising, a shocking clip which our fans can look forward to!”

After two years and over a dozen tours, Freelance Whales were feeling road-worn and eager to rediscover their creative process. They had been building on the grassroots appeal of their earthy debut, Weathervanes, for tens of thousands of miles. To tare the scale, the band embarked on a many faceted journey during which they found themselves isolated in West Kill, sprawled with their instruments in Hoboken, and packed into studios in Brooklyn and Manhattan. What resulted from nearly a year’s worth of creative productivity is the group’s second full-length, Diluvia.

Whereas Weathervanes was delivered from the perspective of a child infatuated with ayoung female ghost, Diluvia is a record about the possible survival – or peril – of space- faring humans and other arguably fantastical scenarios. Curiosity over these unknowns has evolved into notions of space exploration, ancient astronauts, dreams, and natural and artificial selection, with new songs building to expansive, atmospheric destinations. Working to evoke both prehistoric and pseudo-futuristic sensations, the record invites listeners to indulge in more elastic thought, perhaps, than it’s predecessor.

Diluvia, which was recorded over two months in New York City with producer Shane Stoneback, also finds Freelance Whales – Judah Dadone (vocals, guitar, banjo, synthesizers), Doris Cellar (bass, vocals), Chuck Criss (guitar, synthesizers, vocals), Jacob Hyman (drums, vocals), and Kevin Read (guitar, vocals) – exploring new instrumental experiences by blurring their trademark “organic” instruments with liberaluse of electronics and more aggressive rhythm. They may sound bigger, but Freelance Whales are no less committed to capturing intimacy though their music. Diluvia is an experiment in finding the confluence between science and emotion. Their hypothesis is that such a cathartic place exists, for both themselves and their fans, and it can be found somewhere in their new music.

NPR Premieres The Calm Blue Sea “Mary Ann Nichols”

Listen To “Mary Ann Nichols” via NPR here!

Download “Mary Ann Nichols” Here!

The Calm Blue Sea’s lushly textured sound is a study in contrast. The Austin, Texas band’s music, like its oceanic name, is at once beautiful and violent, transcendent and triumphant. With songs structured by minutes rather than measures, the foursome marries post-rock fugues with classically-inspired arrangements, the aggression and heaviness of metal, the artiness of indie rock and the widescreen expanse of a film score. The end result is stunning.

Fresh off the heels of the 2011 reissue of their debut album, The Calm Blue Sea is back with Arrivals & Departures, their overdue sophomore offering and one of the most anticipated recent releases to come out of the fertile Austin music scene.

Originally formed in late 2007, The Calm Blue Sea emerged quickly with their self-released 2008 debut. The eponymous full-length broadened the band’s reach to a worldwide audience and set the foundation for a flurry of activity over the next year. Months after the release, and days after returning home from their first American tour, The Calm Blue Sea wasted no time in immersing themselves in their next creative endeavor: writing and performing an original score to the 1924 Fritz Lang film entitled Siegfried.

While the undertaking was fraught with exhaustion and the stress of deadlines, creating the 96-minute score unearthed new methods of articulation within the band as the writing process evolved to satisfy the specificity of expression that the project required. Siegfried came to life in a one-time performance of the score in front of a sold out audience at Austin’s historic Ritz Theater and a limited edition release in the fall of 2009.

Due to the emotional and financial stress of constant activity, managing every process internally, and sudden lineup changes, the remaining members decided at the end of the their second tour in 2009 to take time apart from the band and ultimately each other.

Eventually, however, the gravitational pull was too strong and guitarist/vocalist Chris Patin, drummer Stephen Bidwell, and bassist Kyle Robarge reunited in late 2010. After filling out the fragmented lineup with Taylor Wilkins on guitar, the band took one last look to the past with the reissue of their debut LP on Modern Outsider Records, garnering praise from the likes of Esquire and NPR Music, who noted, “The Calm Blue Sea’s epic thunderings are far too beautiful to dismiss.”

Following their return to the stage at SXSW 2011, the band started the unexpectedly arduous task of writing their next album. “As a writing team we were essentially starting over. It was very much a brand new band in that sense, and we had to go through all of the initial struggling and stumbling of learning to collaborate with a whole new team, while attempting to come up with a drastically different end product at the same time,” Bidwell says.

“Finally we hit our stride though,” says Patin. “Those first couple of songs were painful to create, but eventually we learned how to communicate again and we started to understand where each person was coming from and which direction they wanted to push this band.”

By early 2012, the band was back at Cacophony Recorders with engineer Erik Wofford (The Black Angels, White Denim), four years removed from the 2008 weekend when they first stepped foot in that same studio to record their self-titled debut.

“While crafting this record we lived outside of our individual comfort zones and challenged each other to shake free of the expectations of what our music is supposed to be,” Patin continues. “I think we’ve finally established our identity. Comparisons are inevitable but my hope is that if someone really listens to this record they’ll hear something unique.”

“We’ve all been waiting a long time for this record,” Robarge says. “Now that it’s finished it’s obvious that this is the record we needed to make — it really bridges the gap from the band we’ve been in the past to the band we’ve become now, and there’s still a lot of growth happening in every new song we write. It’s going to be very exciting to see how people react.”

The Calm Blue Sea’s Arrivals & Departures is set for an October 9, 2012 release on Modern Outsider Records.
