Banger Films Launches Final “Extreme Metal” Crowndfunding Push

Award-Winning Metal Filmmakers Join Forces with Underground Metal Community to Complete “Extreme Metal”

After an enormously successful IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign raising nearly $40,000, Grammy-nominated and Juno-winning Banger Films is embarking on a final push to create the “Lost Episode” of the series Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal. The episode will take viewers on an unprecedented journey across Europe and North America to tell the story of metal’s most aggressive and misunderstood sub-genre.

“Our first IndieGoGo campaign was a huge success and we were blown-away by the support of the metal community,” says Banger Films co-founder Sam Dunn. “The research, writing, travel and filming is now complete and we’ve captured some amazing interviews and footage. But we need to turn this footage into an episode!” The new campaign kicked off Friday, August 9th. Details of the campaign, including a brand-new trailer featuring exclusive footage from Banger’s Extreme Metal filming trip, can be found here: igg.me/at/LostEpisode

Originally broadcast on VH1 Classic (USA) and Much More Music (Canada), Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s series Metal Evolution presented 11 episodes based on the “Heavy Metal Family Tree” originally shown in their groundbreaking documentary, Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey. Host and metalhead-turned-anthropologist Sam Dunn crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of Heavy Metal across its 40+ year history, covering everything from the Pre-History of Metal and Shock Rock to Grunge and Thrash Metal. But one very important episode was left out: Extreme Metal. “Some of the networks felt that Extreme Metal was too heavy or too niche. We’re out to prove that Extreme Metal is metal’s most vital sub-genre and that metal would probably die without it!,” says Dunn.

Tom Gabriel Warrior, legendary frontman for extreme metal bands Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Triptykon, was interviewed by Dunn for the episode: “It was an absolute honour and a pleasure to host Sam and his outstanding team at my place in Zurich. That extreme metal has been overlooked in this series so far is a scandal. This episode is utterly overdue!”

Bands appearing in the episode include Venom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Slayer, Napalm Death, Carcass, Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Enslaved, Gojira and more. The episode will also feature some renowned locations in the history of Extreme Metal including Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida, as well as travel footage from Norway, Switzerland, UK, US, and Hellfest (France), one of the world’s biggest metal festivals.

Contributors’ support for the new IndieGoGo campaign will cover costs of finishing the episode which includes editing, archival and music licensing, onlining, sound mixing and other post-production costs. “People are often surprised by how much making quality film and TV costs. It requires a lot of hard work from a team of talented people to ensure we make the best possible show. Extreme Metal deserves the same high-production value and attention to detail that we gave the other Metal Evolution episodes”, adds Dunn. “I’m not getting paid to make this episode but what matters to me is that the Metal Evolution series is finally completed!”

“Twice in the USA in the space of a year? Must pinch ourselves a little harder. It’s like 22 years ago all over again. Well, the MUNICIPAL WASTE trip was a very beautiful thing, and we found things to be very vibrant and people rolled out in force. So Albert from Decibel asked us back in an excited voice, and we said ‘Oh, go on then’ in an excited voice, and thus we’ll be seeing you sooner rather than later. It’ll be fast, it’ll be furious – guaranteed.”

Dates for the tour are below– be prepared for a crusher this spring! In the meantime, fans can pick up the latest issue of Decibel Magazine for a NAPALM fix. Featuring a foreword penned by Barney, this special 100th issue is available for purchase in stores and online here.

Godflesh To Release Hymns Deluxe Remaster

Click Here To Pre-Order ‘Hymns’ Deluxe Remaster

Godflesh is classic, ballsy, catchy, and mean.  Justin Broadrick (the band’s frontman, and ex member of Napalm Death) manages to craft catchy riffs and choruses into the mix without losing a drop of originality. Even though ”Hymns” is the band’s swan song, it still sounds just as passionate as their first record “Streetcleaner”.   Often called their finest album, “Hymns” was released on 2001, and is now being re-issued by The End Records as a Special Edition 2CD Deluxe Remaster with Bonus Tracks, Liner Notes, Lyrics and Never Before Seen Photos and Images.  Always a few steps ahead of the pack,Godflesh have once again reinvented themselves, providing their audience with a challenging and inspirational slab of crushing industrial metal.

Having recently released their critically acclaimed album Silencing Machine, NACHTMYSTIUM is now ready to bring their unique brand of black metal to fans on Barge To Hell! In regards to their upcoming appearances (as well as their cancelled North American tour with JARBOE), the band comments:

“NACHTMYSTIUM fans on the east coast: we ARE coming out for three shows in a little over a week and finish with a fourth one in Chicago! Then we will be appearing on the Barge To Hell metal cruise ship going from Miami, FL to Nassau, Bahamas and back. Playing alongside SODOM, AT THE GATES, MAYHEM, ROTTING CHRIST, MOONSPELL, MORGOTH, NAPALM DEATH and many, many many more awesome bands!”

“A full U.S. tour WILL be happening sometime between January and April, 2013. Sorry to any of you hoping to catch us on this run. The tour was doomed from the get go in a lot of ways due to things unrelated to the band or our ability to tour. Just poor timing, nothing more, nothing less. We will be doing a thorough US tour early in 2013, so look for us coming to your city soon…And anyone out in the areas we’re playing in a week or so, we look forward to seeing you at the shows!”

Read on for a few reviews of NACHTMYSTIUM’s Silencing Machine:

“[‘Silencing Machine’ is] dirty, it’s black metal and it’s awesome.” — METAL INJECTION

“While not as outwardly experimental as ‘Assassins’ and ‘Addicts’ genre cross-breeding, ‘Silencing Machine’ still pushes [NACHTMYSTIUM’s] sound forward, bringing the psychedelic and post-punk influences into an organic synthesis with their anthems to the welkin at midnight.” — DECIBEL MAGAZINE

“Frontman Blake Judd still smears riffs and pukes tar…” — AV CLUB LOUD

“After releasing two albums–2008’s ‘Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1’ and 2010’s ‘Addicts: Black Meddle Part 2’–that strayed significantly from the band’s black metal roots, Chicago’s NACHTMYSTIUM have returned to the wintry void with their latest, ‘Silencing Machine.'” — REVOLVER MAGAZINE

“NACHTMYSTIUM has always been the torchbearer when it comes to pushing black metal’s boundaries to unthinkable, un-forest locales and while 2008’s ‘Assassins: Black Meddle Part I’ and 2010’s ‘Addicts: Black Meddle Part II’ were impressive bouts of exploratory surgeries, it is ‘Silencing Machine’ that is the true follow-up to NACHTMYSTIUM catalogue highlight ‘Instinct: Decay’…” — BRAVE WORDS

“…NACHTMYSTIUM has time and again shown that black metal is a many splendored thing, continuously stretching the walls of the genre to not only make waves, but create an undertow, nearly dragging their competition to drown in the darkened depths…’Silencing Machine’ does not disappoint.” — METAL SUCKS

“The tracks are brutal, melodic, and powerful, merging all the best elements of NACHTMYSTIUM into one potent mix.” — HAILS AND HORNS

On this co-headlining trek, NAPALM DEATH will be selling tour-exclusive t-shirts designed by artist Sean Taggart (CRUMBSUCKERS, AGNOSTIC FRONT). In regards to these special tees, bassist Shane Embury comments: “As everyone should know, we grew up on a steady diet of the musically extreme, be it death/thrash metal or hardcore punk! Two album covers stood out to us back in the day more than any others as being both satirical and serious at the same time–those being CRUMBSUCKERS’ ‘A Life of Dreams’ and AGNOSTIC FRONT’s ‘Cause for Alarm.’ To me, those album covers capture my youth and enthusiasm for what has now become our lives: playing the music we love all around the world. So with this tour coming up with MUNICIPAL WASTE in the US, we thought to ourselves, ‘Why not get in touch with Sean Taggart—the man behind those covers and all of the awesome flyers from CBGB’s back in the day—and ask if he would do an exclusive shirt, just for us?!'”

Sean agreed to make the shirts for NAPALM DEATH since, as he says, “they’re the heaviest motherfuckers ever!”

To get your shirt, be sure to visit the merch table at one of NAPALM DEATH’s upcoming shows. These tees won’t be available online, so this will be your only chance to have this exclusive, wearable piece of art!

NAPALM DEATH will be touring in support of their critically acclaimed new album, Utilitarian, which was released this past February. Read on for a few reviews of this new NAPALM classic:

“Four decades of machine-gunning sacred cows and hypocrites; NAPALM remain on target.” — DECIBEL MAGAZINE (USA)

“After a few spins, you’ll remember every brutal piece of this grind buffet. There is, after all, only one NAPALM DEATH.” — SLUG MAGAZINE (USA)

“Not only a band that has a lot of things to say…a band that still has a lot of things to play! Their best output in years.” — ROCK HARD MAGAZINE (FRANCE)

“… it is the diversity that keeps NAPALM DEATH after 30 years still on the top position of extreme metal!” — METAL HAMMER MAGAZINE (GERMANY)

AWARD-WINNING BANGER FILMS’ CALL TO ARMS TO THE METAL COMMUNITY

Due to an overwhelming demand from metal fans worldwide, Grammy-nominated and Juno award-winning Banger Films is setting out to raise funds to make what has become known as “The Lost Episode” a reality. Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal “The Lost Episode” covers co-director Sam Dunn’s favorite genres: Death Metal, Black Metal and Grindcore, and he is reaching out to metal fans to help make it happen:

Metal Evolution – The Lost Episode: Extreme Metal from Banger Films on Vimeo.

“Hundreds of fans have emailed us demanding, pleading, that we do this episode,” says Banger Films co-founder Sam Dunn. “So in response we’re launching an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funding within the Metal community to finance the episode. The goal is to raise $175,000 in 90 days!” The campaign kicked off Friday, September 14th. Details of the campaign, including cool donor gifts at various contribution levels can be found here: http://www.indiegogo.com/ExtremeMetal

Originally broadcast on VH1 Classic (USA) and Much More Music (Canada), Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s series Metal Evolution presented 11 episodes based on their “Heavy Metal Family Tree” originally shown in their groundbreaking documentary, Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey. Perceived to be perhaps too niche or “extreme” to attract enough audience interest, the episode did not see the light of day, ironic considering it is Heavy Metal’s most vibrant and fastest growing genre.

“For many fans, including myself, extreme metal is massively important. It continues to push metal forward, both sonically and aesthetically,” says Sam. Alex Webster, co-founder/bass player of death metal legends Cannibal Corpse, agrees: “There’s really no way that you could tell the complete story of heavy metal without including a chapter that covers extreme metal. And given their knowledge, experience, and passion for the genre of heavy metal, I think that Banger Films are the most qualified people to do it!”

Contributors’ support will send Sam on a global journey from San Francisco and Tampa to the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden to investigate the history, myths and intricacies of extreme metal. Sam will unravel the lineage between Extreme Metal’s divergent branches – Death Metal, Grindcore and Black Metal – and meet with the sub-genre’s most influential sonic architects, including members of Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Napalm Death, Entombed, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Enslaved and many more. The result will be an unforgettable portrait of metal’s most iconoclastic sub-genre.
