Produced by Dave Otero (Cattle Decapitation), Proponent For Sentience, which featuring guest appearances bySoilwork’s Bjorn “Speed” Strid  and Scar Symmetry/ex-Bloodshot Dawn’s Benjamin Ellis, is a musically complex, intelligent, and absorbing concept record that can rightfully sit alongside the true greats of the medium. With a lyrical arc rooted in science-fiction yet uncomfortably encroaching upon the reality of the present, it captures the Fort Collins, Colorado natives at their most ambitious and accomplished, pushing the boundaries even further than on their three previous, critically-acclaimed full-lengths. Check out the band’s recently issued mini documentary for Proponent For Sentience, which gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the album with footage from the studio atTHIS LOCATION.

Globally-Acclaimed New Album
Say So Out Now,

“Say So confirms Bent Knee’s eloquence and ebullience, while also breaking new stylistic and temperamental ground.” The Boston Globe

“Mind boggling… the grandest and subtlest ideas are on the table.” NPR

“Intricately woven, surrealist stylings. A potent sense of urgency tingles the air.” Consequence of Sound

“A celebration of creative freedom and unrestricted musicianship. Easily one of the best albums of the year.” Rebel Noise

This has been an incredible year for Bent Knee across the board, with its third album Say So(Cuneiform Records) receiving a unanimously rave reception from national and global media, including The Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, NPR, and Consequence of Sound.

Fresh off a triumphant European tour, the exhilarating live act is proud to announce it’s opening for legendary expansive metal band The Dillinger Escape Plan during the first half of its forthcoming U.S. fall tour. You can experience Bent Knee in action right this second while waiting for the forthcoming gigs. Five songs from its thrilling, upcoming full-length concert film Live at the Space are now available on YouTube.

Since its inception, Bent Knee has remained true to the incredible spectrum of its diverse musical personalities. The Whigs to release Live In Little Five on Nov 11/ Live @Cattivo Oct 14

“…one of those all-encompassing, all-too-rare experiences where you actually feel the music, every perfectly synched-up moment between guitars and crashing cymbals, each echo of every shout and snarl. It’s rad. It’s hard.”–Esquire

Nashville-via-Athens, GA rock trio The Whigs have announced a new live album, Live In Little Five, that will releaseNovember 11 on New West Records. Yesterday, Paste featured the news and premiered a live video for fan-favorite “Like A Vibration,” which first appeared on the band’s critically acclaimed second full-length Mission Control in 2008. Watch the electric, energy-filled video here: https://youtu.be/7qTcJi4S8Bk.

Live In Little Five can be preordered now exclusively through Pledge Music (http://flyt.it/lil5preorder).

Recorded at Aisle 5 in Atlanta, GA last December, Live In Little Five “represent[s] the songs that are on set night in and night out,” according to frontman Parker Gispert. The album showcases eight tracks that span The Whigs’ 14-year career in what the band considers to be their purest form, as well as two previously unrecorded songs intended for their next full-length studio LP. In conjunction with the release, the band is currently on an extensive U.S. tour throughout the East Coast with shows in Chicago, Atlanta, Athens, Nashville, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and more. Full tour details below.

Though consistently lauded for their live performances through tours with killer bands of the same vein like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, MGMT, and Drive-By Truckers, Live In Little Five will be The Whigs’ first ever live album. It follows their fifth studio LP Modern Creation, which released in 2014 on New West and was marked by the band’s fourth appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman. The album received rave reviews with Spin praising it as “jangly, garage-pop glory,” and PopMatters calling the tracks “honest to goodness great rock tunes.”

DETHBEDS Live:
9/08/2016 Beat KitchenChicago, IL w/ Ghost Bath, Frosthelm, Numenorean, Vukari [info]
A newly-formed outfit, DETHBEDS unites a host of influence from a wide array of musical backgrounds, resulting in a volatile concoction of angular metallic, punk-fueled hardcore. Formed in Owosso, Michigan, the band recently finalized a new lineup and located to Chicago, a city in which they had communed and performed together with their prior acts. Collectively hailing from a varied range of experiences within Midwest metal, punk, hip hop, and psych scenes, DETHBEDS marries this diversified collective’s most explosive tactics into a relentlessly energetic, spastic brew of music heavily influenced yet far from limited to the output of influential acts like Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Refused, Botch, and others. Most of Dungeon Scum was written in Michigan, before the band was a fully realized project. Following their migration to Chicago, the band fine-tuned the tracks and recorded the album with Adam Stilson at Decade Music Studios, an amazing studio actually located inside of a DIY music venue called The Observatory, after which the album was mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room, and completed with cover art by Tom Jenkins at Black Eagle Press. The record’s seven-track attack takes place within a seventeen-minute spread, resulting in a rabid, explosive delivery.

BIO

After having released their critically acclaimed debut Native Speaker  in 2011, and hot off the heels of their 12″ single In Kind // Amends, BRAIDS have returned with their new LP Flourish // Perish out August 20th on Arbutus Records.

Flourish // Perish showcases the strength of the band as a collective, and explores their burgeoning love for electronic music.  Here, the band brings their widely disparate strengths together to create a distinctive voice; the organic and complex rhythms dance and spar with sparsely decorative sounds, often fragmented and tampered. Interwoven amongst these threads is the layered voice of Standell-Preston, her engaging lyrics and human performance drawing the listener close.

After 18 months of touring in support of Native Speaker, along with the departure of a band member, the group secluded themselves in their Montreal studio for a year of writing and recording.  While Native Speaker was written in an organic and live environment, the group sought to explore a more introspective and electronic approach to songwriting.  Sonically, the songs from these sessions are delicate and tight, yet thoughtfully open up to the rich lushness reminiscent of their older material. Lyrically they are honest and vulnerable, demonstrating the group’s emotional growth and maturity since their last record.

With Flourish // Perish, BRAIDS marks an exciting new partnership with Montreal-based label Arbutus Records.

Despised Icon Announce Reunion shows

Montreal, Canadian death metal pioneers, Despised Icon, have announced several upcoming reunion shows this Spring, this coming from their 2010 announcement that the group would be disbanding. While no album or full tour is planned, the members of the group are just happy to be back on stage performing together. Vocalist, Alex Erian comments:

It’s been over 3 years already since we played our last shows and long story short, we genuinely miss it.  After a few talks and a couple of beers, we decided to get back together temporarily to play a handful of shows.  We’re excited to announce that we’ll be returning to Europe in April on the Impericon Festivals in Vienna, Manchester and Cologne.  To our friends in Canada and the US, we’ll have some good news for you as well in a few weeks.  Thanks for sticking around with us after all these years.  Can’t wait to see you all and crush the stage, one more time.  Keep it brutal.

A video message was also filmed for the fans and can be seen here.

The band has sold over 150,000 albums worldwide and have influenced countless number of bands in the metal and hardcore scene today.

Despised Icon disbanded in 2010 after a series of sold out farewell shows across their home country.

Montreal’s MIRE (prog rock/metal) Announce Release of Inward/Outward; Offer Free Download

Rising out of Montreal, QC’s vibrant music scene, progressive rock / metal band MIRE are proud to announce the official release of their debut album Inward/Outward on March 18th to follow up their 2010 self titled EP.

Two years in the making, Inward/Outward is a 10 track reflection of ideas flying every which way around the recording studio, ranging from cognitive science to a military stint in Afghanistan by guitarist Dave Massicotte.

“We created this with our guts and have dared to explore a less common style of metal where the music is less obvious and sometimes requires the individual to have more than one listen before being able to grasp and really appreciate every musical element,” says guitarist Massicotte of the album. “From big chunky guitar to light piano melody, every song will take you on a different journey and set of emotions.”

The band has released the first music video ‘Limitless Pt. 2’ in support of the album, which can be viewed at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQnqLxFv5oM

“Limitless Pt. 2 is about waking up from your daily grind to acknowledge the mysticism of your existence. The potential of what mankind is capable of, starts in the hands of its individual subjects – it starts with you. As the title implies, Limitless is an expression of how far you should push your ambitions in all directions to fulfill your own ideal based on your individual experience.’ says vocalist JP LaChapelle. “MIRE celebrates diversity, because slaving to fit the mold serves another. Enough of us have been sacrificed for a semblance of freedom, and to perfect it takes mad balls. Courage to confront fear every single morning, day and night, live on the edge of your seat at all times and lean forward – goad life to ‘come at you bro’. Developing your conscience allows you to stretch out the fiber of the NOW and analyse it. Establish objectives; try 10 times in different ways until you succeed. OWN YOUR DESTINY. That’s the passion we felt when we created Limitless together.”

LE BEST OF 2 continues the theme found on the popular first edition LE BEST OF, released in 2004. Today, Cirque du Soleil continues to work with innovative international composers who propel the Montreal troupe through a variety of musical styles: from cabaret and pop avenues to world music exploration; from modern rock sounds to full orchestral scores.

Featured composers on LE BEST OF 2 include: BOB & BILL, Danny Elfman, Simon Carpentier, Berna Ceppas, Violaine Corradi, Jean-François Côté, René Dupéré (“Pageant”) and Eric Serra. From its early roots in new avant-garde circus-arts music, Cirque du Soleil has established a musical style that has continued to expand as its live shows have continued to push the envelope to new heights.

Three tracks from LE BEST OF 2 come from composers, arrangers and musicians BOB & BILL who are well known for their ability to blur the lines between genres and styles. In 2004, BOB & BILL supplied the musical direction and arrangements for the Cirque du Soleil show Midnight Sun and have continued working with the outfit ever since. The duo’s work on the latest Cirque du Soleil touring show, Amaluna™, marks their third time composing for the company. Amaluna is currently playing in Toronto, ON and will open up in Vancouver, BC on November 23rd. The show will debut in the US in Seattle, WA on January 31, 2013. The soundtrack for Amaluna will be out November 20, 2012 and LE BEST OF 2 gives its first preview by leading off with an exclusive version of its songs: “Magic Ceremony 1” as titled for this compilation.

LE BEST OF 2 is a must-have collection of favorites for Cirque du Soleil fans, as well as an opportunity for everyone to experience some of Cirque’s finest music.

Blue Hawaii Premieres Two Tracks

Blue Hawaii, Arbutus Records and many of their Montreal counter-parts all began with the same breath in early 2010. To date they’ve released an 8 song EP: in May of that year, Blooming Summer (Arbutus Records 2010) was recorded following the pair’s travels in Central America. It frames a time of warmth and novelty, featuring dense female harmonies, tape saturated synths, guitars and drum machines. Eventually Ra– returned to her role in BRAIDS, touring constantly, while Ag–moved to Europe, treading deeper into dance music, electronics, and production.

The two decided to make Untogether in 2012; they began recording on New Years Day in Vancouver and intermittently worked on the project until summer broke in Montreal. The music followed their winter in Canada, it became colder, more introspective. It again captured a time and place, but instead of a dense saturation of love and excitement, this record reflects the vast world of self-awareness and delicacy. It takes for its subject the question of belonging, despite overwhelming space.

Musically, the production on the album is more spacious and physically it was recorded in separation. Despite this, it belongs together in its final form. It demonstrates successful creative process in a pair who composed apart, and in doing so it is a meditation on communication: how technology and art influence modern human relationships. It contains the vast space of two years passing, including watching their Montreal scene change as some launched into international success and others turned deeper inwards. Here, the album finds the conflict of separation/belonging to one’s self and community.

The duo notice that throughout the changing social and personal landscape which is one’s twenties, these divided notions and people somehow stay together. Even the name Blue Hawaii suggests a kind of melancholic, jaded paradise, but a paradise afterall. It is because – or perhaps in spite of – these disjointed intersections that the record is called Untogether.
