“A girl group-drenched dollop of wonderfulness.”

“Vibrant pop songs infused with a colorful, swirly, breezy mix of classic 60’s pop sounds reminiscent of the Girl Group era, touches of the Beach Boys, The Zombies,
and the Left Banke.”

“[Chalk And Numbers] pull from a wide array of influences to create their unique sound… modern and timeless simultaneously.”

Chalk And Numbers are a Brooklyn-based duo comprised of vocalist Sable Yong and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Pierce. Together Yong and Pierce craft catchy modern pop songs influenced by the 60’s musical cannon and analog recording technology, and today they’ve gifted us with a 60s-inspired cover of Misfits’ “Angelf*ck”, available for free download from The Wild Honey Pie — “With front woman Sable Young’s lush, flowing vocals and Andrew Pierce’s robust analog instrumentation… the band doesn’t get caught up in the Misfits’ fast-paced punk style, rather keeping their own pace and spinning their own originality and surf-rock style into the blindingly reckless punk rock original.”

Chalk and Numbers are currently working on their debut full length release as they prepare to attend SXSW 2014. Their latest EP, Parade, was released in March 2013 to positive reviews from Rolling Stone and The Guardian, who described the duo as a “a girl group-drenched dollop of wonderfulness”. Music from previous Chalk and Numbers releases has been featured on major network television shows such as Nashville,Awkward, and The Inbetweeners, and in 2012 the band contributed a song to the full length feature film “For A Good Time Call…”.

Late last year, Beats Per Minute premiered Chalk and Numbers’ cover of “Brave Boy Jump” — a Fraggle Rock song the band was asked to record for a special compilation being released by the official Jim Henson company. Other artists contributing covers include Animal Collective, Thee Oh Sees, Red Fang, City Lights, Sleepy Sun, and many more.Fraggle Rock – Shine On is currently looking at an early 2014 limited edition vinyl release.

Although former Misfits guitarist DOYLE is currently on the road performing for U.S. fans withDanzig as part of the DANZIG 25 tour, that does not mean he cannot share a little bit of his new album Abominator with his fans across the globe. ‘Valley of Shadows’, the previously released single from the new album, now has a lyric video counterpart. The video is being released today, exclusively. Take a look at the video here.

“To introduce our new album Abominator, we are releasing the official lyric video for the first single ‘Valley Of Shadows’. A dark journey through a world of lust and violence,” states vocalist Alex Story. “Showcasing the evolution of sound DOYLE has achieved from his already legendary development with The Misfits, this song rages with the primal fury and carnality found throughout the band’s debut album. This is a call to arms to true fiends everywhere. The trip through the valley is a brutal thrill filled ride to hell that you won’t soon forget. Where hardcore punk meets old school thrash and a new breed of doom metal, ‘Valley Of Shadows’ is just a glimpse into what is to come from Abominator.”

“‘Tides of War’ offers music that is well done and fueled with the propensity of delivering solid melodic death/thrash.” –

“Fans of modern thrash, who like it furious, biting and yet melodic check Chariots of The Gods.” – Lords of Metal

“There’s a lot on ‘Tides of War’ to pique the interest of either thrash or melodic death metal fans, and the non-stop galloping guitar sound is an impressive display of what the underground can achieve.” –

“It is heavy, brutal and energetic while also incorporating a fair amount of melody to boot!…This is an album that is definitely going to raise the bar in the extreme music scene for the remainder of the year. Pick this one up; you won’t regret it!” –

“CHARIOTS OF THE GODS are showing plenty of promise to be able to be one of Canada’s next big things out there” – Metal Observer

“An incredibly professional production is at hand: drums are clear; vocals are on the perfect level with the instruments; even the soft and quiet moments are balanced just right so as to create bits of atmosphere against the heaviness. There is a pure love of metal evident in this debut and the production lets all the power, aggression, and passion through to the listener…the band confidently establishes their intention: a charge of solid and unyielding melodeath garnished with impeccable interludes, solos, and leads.” – MetalStorm

“CHARIOTS OF THE GODS, with their first full-length release ”Tides Of War”,is sure to be the new buzz of the underground scene…Overall, the album is an eclectic, vibrant, and colorful release that really keeps listeners head banging all the way and appreciating the good work the band has put in. The production is clearly strong, coming from the hands of Glen Robinsonwho has worked with Metal legends such as ANNIHILATOR and QUEENSRYCHE…The band does its best, and boy is it good, to church out infectious hook after hook, coupled with blistering melodies and kickass solos backed by Jobin’s great vocals. Each band member shines in this album and their dedication and devotion to their music is clear from the start…The entire album is structured in a genius way—these guys are clearly gifted lads.” – Metal-Temple

“Splendid stuff from a young Canadian troupe that would appear to have all the tricks… I love their coruscating mix of Maidenesque harmonies (have a listen to the awesome Blind Assassin and tell me you ain’t impressed)” – MetalAsFuck

“”Tides of War” is an album that rivals classics by acts such as God Forbid, Shadows Fall, and Killswitch Engage in excellence and pays respectful homage to acts like In Flames, Arch Enemy, At The Gates, and Dark Tranquility. For my money, this debut album deserves the status as a melodeath-type of metal classic. 5/5″ – MetalMusicArchives

“The best thing about this band, in my view, is the powerful melodic style they bring to each song. The guitarists are especially strong on several tracks, including “Tides of War,” “Revillusion (1905),” and “Unbound.” I loved the instrumental track “Snow Falls on the White River (1914),” yet another piece of evidence that these guys have a keen sense of melody, at times, one that even approaches beauty. Mathiew St-Amour and Dimitri Gervais play their guitars with grace and precision and sound especially great on their harmonized parts. These guys have a bright future as twin guitar leads and I hope they’ll take advantage of what they can do together. Readers who like their guitars to come in pairs will love this album.” – SeaofTranquility

“COTG entice the listener with infectious hooks, associated melodies and some blistering solos out of the guitar work. If that is not justice enough for you to buy this, then listen to the intensity of Renaud Jobin’s vocals. This is a release that requires you to strap your balls down (if you have them of course!) when the volume is cranked up…They have a fantastic musical ability and a gift of song structure that exhumes listeners emotions that includes anger and conversely serenity and the need to throw the devil horns without too much though will therefore result. ‘Tides of War’ promotes Chariots of the Gods as real contenders in their field of metal, their field of glory and the rewards are presented for everyone on these exceptional fourteen tracks defining a generation of musically gifted individuals who do not rely purely on breakdowns to get their point across, it sounds effortless. Horn’s raised high gents! 4/5″ –

“Overture is quite sweet sounding and feels like a film score. Nothing compared to the monster that is waiting to be unleashed. Ferocious riffs and classic metal vocals. Drums blasting out the speed and blasts and the guitars giving it a chunky edge whilst maintains some harmony. Hatebreed hardcore edge but throws in the melody. Definitely an innovative sound amongst a sea of similar sounds. Chariots of the Gods definitely seem to offer something that little bit different. Taking the generic metal sound and throwing in delicious guitar solos with a conflicting vocal. Upbeat without being cheesy.” – Culutre Bomb Mag

”I’m honored to be a part of this project” – Glen Robinson (producer)

”It’s pretty good!” – Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters)

”In my opinion, Chariots of the Gods is THE melodic thrash metal revelation in Canada this year” – Musique d’une Nation

”Excellent album full of energy […] I may have a man-crush on Chariots of the Gods”
Ondes Chocs

”I wouldn’t be surprised to see ‘Tides of War’ be a strong beginning this year in the field of melodic death metal.” Dagheisha

”Just pure metal […] it’s a real treat to the ears” – Metal Manic

”My first reaction was ”WOW!” […] If you like death metal, you have to get that CD” –

”It’s a masterpiece” –

”Mathieu-Phillipe St-Amour is undoubtedly a promosing guitarist” –

”A band to admire […] amazing collaboration of Heavy Metal and Death Metal […] no less than perfect” – Metal Temple

”An excellent band who knows what they are doing […] Listen to them and you’ll discover something great” – Dave Lemire (Concert promoter)

”Chariots of the Gods […] are doing everything right […] they are talented and powerful enough to show the world Canada rocks hard” – Metal Bite

”I am stoked to discover new talent from Ottawa […] Chariots of the Gods is an erruption waiting to happen”  -The Ottawa Epitaph

“Hands down, CHARIOTS OF THE GODS have worked hard and have improved their songwriting that shines in “Tides Of War” in every aspect. Don’t be fooled by the melodic Death Metal tag and consider the Canadians just another IN FLAMES wannabe because there is more than just catchy riffs and growling vocals. And don’t forget that CHARIOTS OF THE GODS come from Canada that is a most reliable source for high quality Metal. 8/10″ –

Kirk Hammett Performs “Trapped Under Ice” with Death Angel

Metallica guitarist, Kirk Hammett, invited Bay Area thrashers Death Angel to perform at the release party for his new book, Too Much Horror Business: The Kirk Hammett Collection.

Hammett joined the band for a handful of songs, including renditions of Metallica’s “Trapped Under Ice,” Kiss’ “She” and, fittingly, Misfits’ “Horror Business.”

BUCKCHERRY to Release “Confessions” in Early 2013

BUCKCHERRY are proud to announce that their next studio album, Confessions, will be their first domestic release with new label Century Media Records. The album is planned for an early 2013 release on Century Media in the United States and via Eleven Seven Music worldwide, with new tracks to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

“The time has come to finally announce the release of our sixth LP, Confessions,” says Buckcherry frontman Josh Todd. “This is our coolest album yet and I think a lot of people will relate, if you love BC you are going to get a chance to be part of a great story – join the revolution and let’s rock!”

Buckcherry are one of the premier rock bands of the new millennium, having sold more than three million records in America alone and touring virtually non-stop, playing with everyone from AC/DC to Slipknot, touring sold-out arenas alongside Nickelback and KISS, and headlining festivals ranging from the punk rock Ink-N-Iron (also featuring the Misfits and Pennywise) to Sturgis. Radio staples “Lit Up,” “Crazy Bitch” and “Sorry” have cemented the band as one of the most identified and sought-after bands on radio and live circuits, and Confessions is primed to take the band to even greater heights.

“This is, by far, our most ambitious record,” says guitarist Keith Nelson, who co-founded Buckcherry with Todd in 1995 after the duo met in a Los Angeles tattoo shop. “We are very proud of the work we’ve done and we are looking forward to presenting it to our fans.”

Confessions is an album based on the seven deadly sins, and is part of a larger vision that includes a film written by Josh Todd, who based the album’s lyrics on his childhood and transformation into adulthood.

Buckcherry remain on the road throughout 2012, appearing in Japan later this month and returning to the United Kingdom Nov. 20 – Dec. 10.

Michale Graves returns to Pittsburgh on September 25th

Former Misfits frontman, Michale Graves, returns to Pittsburgh on September 25th for an all acoustic show at the 31st St. Pub. Michale will strum his way through his favorite solo and Misfits material. Opening acts include The Sablowskis and The Homeless Gospel Choir. This over 21 show starts at 9pm. $10 admission.

“There’s no skull makeup, no skeleton jacket, no bony trousers, in fact Graves has removed all the eponymous “Illusions” from his past life and instead gives us the bare bones of one man and one guitar captivating people. And captivate he certainly does. Graves has always been an accomplished songwriter, it’s no secret that he was the main writing force for the Misfits albums he recorded, (namely “American Psycho” and “Famous Monsters,”) and the acoustic tracks selected for this album are nothing short of magical.”
— Dónal McBrien, Metal Ireland

Michale Graves blasted onto the music scene in 1995 as the lead singer of one of the most legendary punk rock bands of all time, The Misfits. The band soon kicked off an explosive tour of Europe and the United States dubbed “Resurrection”. Soon after Michale and the band signed a recording contract with Geffen Records through the same A&R representative who signed Metallica and White Zombie. American Psycho was the first Misfits release in almost twenty years. Michale composed a majortiy of the songs on the album including both singles. The Misfits then embarked on a grueling world tour with one of the biggest heavy metal acts on the planet, Megadeth….

Merchandising Madness: What’s Cool and What’s Tool

Recently, an article from Metal Insider regarding strange merchandise from legendary band Slayer, piqued interest.  Some of the choices were depicted as bizarre and others possibly just intriguing.  It begs the question, “When is the band just pocketing money and when is it actually providing for the fans?”.  Much of this would depend on the individual, thus making for an opinionated debate.

The ultimate gods of merchandising of course are KISS.  It is well known that Simmons and Stanley typically put their names on anything, from coffins to potato heads.  One of our favorites, actually here in the office, just happens to be the Gruntz Dressed to Kill KISS collectibles (shown below).  Still, what makes these collectible over a potato head, or the ultimate collectible, a coffin?

A plethora of wines have been produced lately with mainly classic rock groups as the benefactor.  The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, even AC/DC have signed on to wine their wares.  Vince Neil is no stranger to lending his name to liquor, having a tequila brand and wine label.  Of course, Sammy Hagar made a small mint when selling off his Cabo Wabo Tequila and Maynard from Tool has a very legit wine orchard in Arizona (enough to have a whole documentary about it).

Other oddities include: Durex  marketing their condoms using bands from JLS to Slayer. Rammstein apparently has their own lines of sex toys.  Having seen them in concert numerous times, this actually makes a lot of sense.  Bill Wyman of the Stones endorses a metal detector.  Mastadon have a “horn” to drink from and Motorhead has a beach ball (We must confess this is in the office also- when we think Lemmy we think beach!).

Perfumes, pasta sauces, sodas, energy drinks, if the money is there the bands will come.  The line of action figure type replicas are very collectible and can increase in value rather quickly.  Motley Crue, Lemmy, Slash, Iggy Pop, Ozzy, Hendrix, Morrison, and Metallica are just a few who have been immortalized in plastic.  The bobblehead industry is booming too.  Just “head” on over to Amazon or any number of websites to check out the various bands that are represented.

The bottom line is that consumers want these products.  If they did not no one would be putting the money into manufacturing the trinkets and toys and who knows what.  Let the consumer beware and judge.  If someone loves KISS so much they want to be buried in a KISS coffin, so be it.  As rock n’ roll collectors ourselves, the variety beyond the usual tees and posters is exciting and also an opportunity to laugh.  With the market for song distribution so confusing these days let the bands make the money where and when they can.  And let us put the debate to bed.  Hey, where are my Misfits slippers anyhow?
