Black Label Society and Corrosion of Conformity Storm Stage AE Pittsburgh (w/ guest Red Fang)

Entering Pittsburgh’s Stage AE, “Zakk Wylde may be the last true Guitar God on this planet,” was overheard within the enthusiastic crowd.  Wylde may have made his fame from being Ozzy‘s on and off guitar player, but he has forged a loyal group of followers and fans with Black Label Society.  And why wouldn’t he?  The man consistently tours either with BLS, Ozzy, Zakk Sabbath, or solo.  He plays the guitar like it’s another appendage and he has the strut and attitude of the old regime of metal gods.  The fact that he is built like a brick shithouse and looks like sasquatch stole a biker’s outfit only adds to his persona which includes being one of the most serious guitar players to not take himself seriously.

Pittsburgh is lucky enough to be on BLS’s tour list for quite some time and their performance (Feb 6, 2018) proves why the crowd keeps coming back.  Opening with Genocide Junkies from 1919 Eternal, the band just kept ripping it up from there as they dove into Funeral Bell and Suffering Overdue.  Wylde continued to let his guitar do the speaking as John (JD) DeServio (bass), Jeff Fabb (drums), and Dario Lorina (guitar) pummeled their individual instruments with abandon.  Watching Zakk get up on his riser, skull and cross adorned mike stand and all, and whip his hair in a frenzy as he plays more notes than your fingers can air guitar to in mere seconds is a rush each and every time one might see him live.  The fact that he consistently has put together a very tight band to work with him adds to the appeal of BLS, for the members are a traveling family of sorts.

BLS are touring their latest release, Grimmest Hits. Grimmest Hits, the highly anticipated follow up to Billboard Top 5 charting titles Catacombs of the Black Vatican (2014) and Order of the Black (2010).  It reached #1 on the Billboard Hard Music, #1 Independent, and #2 Rock Charts. The LP was also the #1 selling album at Best Buy for the week of its release, beating out Grammy nominated, Fall Out Boy by a considerable margin.  Upon its release last in January, Grimmest Hits landed at #1 spot on iTunes Top Rock Albums Chart and #7 on the Overall Top Albums Chart. Full setlist here.

One of the favorite parts of any BLS show is the inevitable solo by Wylde as he plays behind his head and every which way in between passing through the crowd and even into the balcony.  Add to this BLS hits such as Suicide Messiah (inspired by Scott Weiland’s life), the Dimebag Darrel tribute In This River (with piano solo), as well as the classic Stillborn (that features Ozzy doing backing vocals on the record).  As always BLS brought the goods and distributed them freely and viciously, keeping us wanting more.

A special treat to the show was the edition of Corrosion of Conformity.  COC has been on a tear recently as they have reunited with Pepper Keenan on guitar and lead vocal.  Pepper has become a fave due to his role in Down with ex-Pantera frontman Phillip Anselmo.  But, before he graced that band, he became known in the COC crowd when he first joined the band as a guitarist and was asked to do the vocals on 1991’s Blind song “Vote With a Bullet” which started their first mainstream attention.

The true four among fans of COC are considered Pepper, Mike Dean (bass), Woody Weatherman (guitar), and Reed Mullin (drums).  Unfortunately, Reed was out for part of the tour (he stuck out the first month), including Pittsburgh, as he nurses a knee injury that required surgery (filling in has been John Green, Mullin’s drum tech).  Mostly intact and with a formidable stand-in drummer, COC absolutely destroyed Pittsburgh.  The combination of stoner metal-punk that was unleashed is comparable to repeatedly getting punched in the face and getting intoxicated from it instead of feeling pain.  Keenan’s vocals were perfectly steel reinforced with just enough of that signature Pepper gravel to make them stand out.  His guitar playing is diverse and masterful as well, with a touch thrash, country rock, and true NOLA sludge blended together.  Add to this Woody’s crunchy and perfectly timed rhythm guitar in the vein of Malcolm Young, as well as Mike Dean’s solid low end, and the conglomeration leaves one with a distinct sound that can carry many variables to keep it interesting and evolving.

COC’s set was tight and powerful, not relying on spectacle but prowess and panache.  Their new effort, No Cross No Crown, is no less punitive to the ears as it hearkens to a “Black Sabbath-esque” formula containing slowed down sludge scenery.  It was released January 12th via Nuclear Blast Entertainment, toppled Billboard charts upon its first week of release earning #67 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, #12 on the Billboard Top Current Albums Chart, and #3 on the Top Hard Music Albums Chart making it the highest charting album of the band’s career.  Captured in North Carolina with longtime producer John Custer, No Cross No Crown marks the first studio recording with vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan in over a decade and has reaped critical accolades from fans and critics alike both stateside and abroad.  Please check out our interview with Mike Dean on YouTube.

If you missed it, check out the band’s recently-released new video for “The Luddite” HERE as well as their animated clip for “Wolf Named Crow” HERE.  No Cross No Crown is available on CD, digital, vinyl, and cassette formats. Various order bundles are available at

Portland rockers Red Fang opened the evening touring with their latest, Only Ghosts, out now on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse Records (Physical packages and digital orders are available via HEREand Bandcamp HERE).  Red Fang has been around since @2005.  Often put under the moniker stoner rock, the band has become a staple go-to for band fans like Mastodon and Dillinger Escape Plan.  Interestingly enough the band has announced a special wine collaboration with Teutonic Wine Company, a small urban winery in their hometown that makes wines in the style of the Middle Mosel Valley in Germany and France’s Alsace region. The wine, aptly called “Red Fang Red” is a blend of varieties that have never been done before: Pinot Noir, Tannat and Gewürztraminer.  To celebrate, Teutonic and the band teamed up for a wine release party like no other on January 13th at the Teutonic headquarters in Portland. Attendees got get to enjoy a DJ set from drummer John Sherman, a wine tasting with the band, munch on house-made corn dogs and much more.  By all means, Red Fang is a must-see for any KYUSS-style loving rocker.

Detroit-based saajtak @Brillobox 6/11

Drawing from eclectic backgrounds, Detroit based avant-rock quartet saajtak channels the textural experimentalism of electronic music, the timbral and rhythmic intricacies of Indian classical music, the intimate communication of Deep-Listening rooted free improvisation, and the urgency of polymetric groove. Through ritualistic collaborative sessions, the ensemble creates unique audiovisual environments and genre defying compositions.

“With their combined forces, saajtak are nothing if not unpredictable, bobbing between feverish noise and lush, operatic soundscapes with the agility of a hummingbird… it is rare to see musicians thrive in this space as saajtak [does].” – Detroit Music Magazine

Saajtak brings meaning to each moment as they perform – eervescent, ethereal, and completely drool-worthy. One of our favorite bands in SE Michigan.” – Detroit Bureau of Sound

“Witnessing this group fuse their powers together and lock into their form of magic is nothing short of astounding. I just can’t even imagine how their songs and performances come together … Too amazing for words.” – Paul Simpson, Music Director at WCBN-FM

Propelled by a shared ainity for free improvisation, vocalist Alex Koi, electronic artist Simon Alexander-Adams, percussionist Jon Taylor and bassist Ben Willis developed a musical rapport in Creative Arts Orchestra, a large all-improvising ensemble at The University of Michigan. Since 2014, saajtak has cultivated a dynamic artistic practice, incorporating Taylor and Koi’s study of jazz, Willis’ experience in the western art music tradition, and Alexander-Adams’ work in multimedia and performance art technology. 2017 will be a busy year for the ensemble, with the spring release of their debut EP Spokes, an east coast tour, and many performances.

Richmond, VA natives LAMB OF GOD are one of heavy music’s most successful and uncompromising bands.  When the band’s first major release, New American Gospel, was released in 2000 it was immediately touted as a classic within the genre. AllMusic stated it best, “The essential signatures of post-Pantera metal are in abundance on Lamb of God’s inaugural album. New American Gospel provides a mighty oak upon which gritty American metal’s faith is maintained, effectively bridging the ’90s’ insistence upon drill-sergeant technicality and the old school’s determined focus on riff construction.”
Some predicted a sophomore slump – that no band could top a debut album so strong.  They were proven wrong, with the release of 2004’s Ashes of the Wake, an album that not only exploded stateside (certified Gold by RIAA) but also saw the spread of LAMB OF GOD to all corners of the world.  The band’s first DVD, Killadelphia, followed shortly after and was certified Platinum.  Then, with Sacrament (Album, 2006, #8 debut on the US Billboard Hot 200), LAMB OF GOD were honored with a Grammy nomination for the track “Redneck”, which would be the first of five Grammy nominations for the band to date. Next came Walk With Me In Hell (DVD, 2008) and then the band’s fourth album Wrath in 2009, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart, and then Resolution, which debuted at #3. Shortly after the release of Resolution, vocalist Randy Blythe was arrested in Prague, and spent 30 days in jail on a charge for which he was later acquitted (and lead to Blythe’s bestselling memoir, Dark Days, as well as the film As The Palaces Burn).  After regrouping, LAMB OF GOD lost no ground with their latest full-length album, VII: Sturm Und Drang, the album was #3 in the US, #1 in Canada, #2 in Australia, #3 in Finland, #7 in UK, #12 in Germany and #13 in Japan, and #13 in Netherlands. “Overlord“, the first single from VII: Sturm Und Drang, achieved a new milestone for the band when it reached the Top Thirty of US Active Rock Radio Chart (Mediabase).  Most recently, late last year LAMB OF GOD paid tribute to late, longtime fan and friend Wayne Ford with the release of The Duke EP, which raised funds and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The EP release coincided with a charity campaign offering personal items such as Blythe’s Ashes Of The Wake Gold plaque, signed signature model guitars, handwritten lyrics and more.
Since inception and through it all, LAMB OF GOD‘s consistent and unwavering commitment to their music – and their fans – has kept them a critical and fan favorite worldwide, selling millions of albums and tickets around the world.
LAMB OF GOD is Randy Blythe (vocals), Mark Morton (guitar), Willie Adler (guitar), John Campbell (bass), and Chris Adler (drums).

Featuring the acclaimed singles “Sure”, “Cloud 9“, “Helpless“, “Blue” and “Miracle“, the highly anticipated album, 131, was released in July via Hopeless Records and garnered incredible praise with Substream Magazine saying “We don’t hesitate to proclaim Emarosa is better now than ever before” and stating that “‘131’ shatters the mold the band previously sat in and stands out as a modern rock masterpiece that delivers hit after heart-felt hit.”
131 was produced in Nashville by Casey Bates, who is known for his work with artists like Portugal The Man, Chiodos, PierceThe Veil, Memphis May Fire, Gatsbys American Dream and many more. During the recording process, the band made a conscious effort to throw all expectations to the side and record the album they always wanted to make, free of all external pressures. As a result, the record takes a pop-turn, reflecting Walden’s diverse influences, including Michael Jackson and PatrickStump, while still retaining Emarosa’s signature grittiness. Fans old and new will enjoy the dynamic sounds of 131.
On 131‘s evolved sound, Walden explores the boundaries of rock and infuses these epically charged anthems with an even fuller sense of grandeur than on past releases. “I’m so proud of this. It’s my favorite thing I’ve ever done. This is the record we wanted to make,” he shares.
Emarosa’s current line up includes Bradley Scott Walden, ER White, Jordan Stewart and Matthew Marcellus.

THE WILD! coming to Jergel’s supporting BUCKCHERRY

11/21/2016 Warrendale, PA Jergel’s

They are The Wild! And they are crazy. Hey, what else did you expect? “Let’s face it,” laughs Wild! singer-guitarist 14717116_967608313368217_2417229195737620525_nDylan Villain. “When your band is called TheWild — with an exclamation point — you’ve set the bar high for yourself. It’s gotta be150mph right from the jump.” And that is exactly how these guys roll. On the stage, on record or on the road. But hey, don’t take it from us. Pick up their explosive debut album GxDxWxB, out April21, 2015 on eOne Music Canada, and hear for yourself, expertly produced by MikeFraser (Aerosmith, Jimmy Page, Dave Ghrohl, Van Halen) at the legendary WarehouseStudio in Vancouver, BC with additional production completed at the city’s ArmouryStudios.  If rock barnburners like Road House, Party ’Til You’re Dead, Straight to Hell andBanger don’t get your blood running, you might wanna check your pulse. And if you don’t agree that their southern-fried blues-punk riffs justify The Wild!’s hard-earned rep as the sons of every great rock’n’roll band from AC/DC to ZZ Top, you best get your ears cleaned, chump. Make no mistake. Villain and partners in crime — burly bearded singer-bassist Boozus, chrome-domed drummer Reese Lightning and recently recruited rhythm guitarist PistolPete — come by that sound and that rep honestly. The band hails from the wilds ofKelowna, B.C., where they grew up like every other rural teenager. “We were riding around in crappy vehicles down dirt roads, listening to old rock’n’roll, punk rock & metal records going to bush parties, hunting and fishing,” Villain says. The latter was earned over the course of a decade together in the rock ’n’ roll trenches, honing their notoriously over-the-top live show in every warehouse, farmhouse, henhouse, outhouse and doghouse that would have them.

Now they’re a thicker than water.  They’ve been through the fire. And they bring it with them every time they step on the stage. “It’s definitely about that fire,” stresses Villain.“Sure, you’ve gotta play well. But there’s something more than just hitting the right notes and playing everything perfect. You’ve gotta give it everything every night. 150%.You have to put your foot to the floor and never stop — red line that the whole goddamn way.” You might think these guys are nothing but redneck beer drinking hellraisers. But there’s a method to the madness. “We know who we are,” Villain explains.“We know what we’re like. We’re a powder keg. We like to have a good time &everything you’ve heard is probably true. But there’s more to us than just that.” 2012 proved to be an eventful year for The Wild! with their first single, Road House, released. Road House was then featured on The Jason Ellis Show on FACTION(Sirius/XM) and is in current rotation in the UK (Steve Taylor’s show ‘Retro Rock’ on102.5FM – Stourbridge), Canada (Power 104.7FM – Kelowna) and on various online stations such as and After teaming up withVancouver hip-hop music video director, Stuey Kubrick, the Road House music video received more than 10,000 views in its first week and an additional 20,000 views within the first month. Backing the vision, sound and attitude of The Wild! Adrian Grenier, star of Entourage and owner of Wreckroom Records in NYC, posted a link to the Road House video on his Twitter feed. Sonically, their riffs are steeped in blues and punk, two more subjects near and dear to the band. “We take a huge influence from the blues… and I’m talking about the Delta blues that’s not really heard by a lot of people. But we’ve also got a punk attitude about this whole thing. That’s the thing about great punk rock: You’re not trying to do anything. You’re not overthinking it. You’re just doing it. It was the same with the oldDelta bluesmen. They had conviction. They really meant what they were doing and sodo we. No matter what we do it’s at 11. We just wanna live hard. We just wanna live free.”

“As manager of GWAR and America’s benevolent deep state dictator Sleazy P. Martini. I want to encourage as many Americans as possible to shun the false left-right dichotomy that is politics and make their voices heard by coming out to see GWAR defend their belts on tour this year. “Say So confirms Bent Knee’s eloquence and ebullience, while also breaking new stylistic and temperamental ground.” The Boston Globe

“Mind boggling… the grandest and subtlest ideas are on the table.” NPR

“Intricately woven, surrealist stylings. A potent sense of urgency tingles the air.” Consequence of Sound

“A celebration of creative freedom and unrestricted musicianship. Easily one of the best albums of the year.” Rebel Noise

This has been an incredible year for Bent Knee across the board, with its third album Say So(Cuneiform Records) receiving a unanimously rave reception from national and global media, including The Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, NPR, and Consequence of Sound.

Fresh off a triumphant European tour, the exhilarating live act is proud to announce it’s opening for legendary expansive metal band The Dillinger Escape Plan during the first half of its forthcoming U.S. fall tour. Prior to those dates, Bent Knee will headline across the East Coast, including a date in Toronto, Canada.

You can experience Bent Knee in action right this second while waiting for the forthcoming gigs. Five songs from its thrilling, upcoming full-length concert film Live at the Space are now available on YouTube.

Since its inception, Bent Knee has remained true to the incredible spectrum of its diverse musical personalities. Courtney Swain’s riveting vocals lead the way through often dark lyrical themes, while guitar virtuoso Ben Levin shifts seamlessly from melodic riffs to extreme dissonance, often at a moment’s notice. Bassist Jessica Kion and drummer Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth contribute deep grooves, full of unexpected accents and ornamentation that glue the boundary-pushing work together. Violinist Chris Baum soars atop and through the material, further expanding the group’s sonic palette, and producer/sound designer Vince Welch combines it all with understated brilliance.

The Whigs to release Live In Little Five on Nov 11/ Live @Cattivo Oct 14

“…one of those all-encompassing, all-too-rare experiences where you actually feel the music, every perfectly synched-up moment between guitars and crashing cymbals, each echo of every shout and snarl. It’s rad. It’s hard.”–Esquire

Nashville-via-Athens, GA rock trio The Whigs have announced a new live album, Live In Little Five, that will releaseNovember 11 on New West Records. Yesterday, Paste featured the news and premiered a live video for fan-favorite “Like A Vibration,” which first appeared on the band’s critically acclaimed second full-length Mission Control in 2008. Watch the electric, energy-filled video here:

Live In Little Five can be preordered now exclusively through Pledge Music (

Recorded at Aisle 5 in Atlanta, GA last December, Live In Little Five “represent[s] the songs that are on set night in and night out,” according to frontman Parker Gispert. The album showcases eight tracks that span The Whigs’ 14-year career in what the band considers to be their purest form, as well as two previously unrecorded songs intended for their next full-length studio LP. In conjunction with the release, the band is currently on an extensive U.S. tour throughout the East Coast with shows in Chicago, Atlanta, Athens, Nashville, Brooklyn, Philadelphia, and more. Full tour details below.

Though consistently lauded for their live performances through tours with killer bands of the same vein like Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, MGMT, and Drive-By Truckers, Live In Little Five will be The Whigs’ first ever live album. It follows their fifth studio LP Modern Creation, which released in 2014 on New West and was marked by the band’s fourth appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman. The album received rave reviews with Spin praising it as “jangly, garage-pop glory,” and PopMatters calling the tracks “honest to goodness great rock tunes.”

DJ wunderkind Chrome Sparks playing Pittsburgh

Chrome Sparks is the project Jeremy Malvin, a musician and producer living in Brooklyn by way of Pittsburgh and Ann Arbor. He kicked off Chrome Sparks in mid-2012 with the track ‘Marijuana’, a thumping, fluttering piece of synth-centered bass music that unexpectedly set the internet alight. Inspired by a background in classical percussion and an obsession with synthesizers, Malvin creates dazed, melodic beat-centric tunes that loosely hang between down-tempo head nodders and up-tempo club bangers. His last EP Parallelism was made using sounds from three analog synthesizers, vocal samples from friends, and a tambourine.

As previously announced, the artist known as Chrome Sparks will be touring the US this fall.  The tour encompasses headlining shows (including one at Echoplexin Los Angeles on September 27 and at NYC‘s Le Poisson Rouge on October 15) as well as festival appearances (III Points Festival) and select dates as the support for Flume ( Red Rocks Amphitheatre on August 18 and Forest Hills Stadium in New York on August 27).   For his headlining dates Chrome Sparkswill be touring with special guest Roland Tings. The full run of dates and ticket links, including festival appearances and special one-off shows, is below.
The Brooklyn-based artist, born Jeremy Malvin, grew up in Pittsburgh and spent formative time in Ann Arbor before settling east and converting a legion of supporters to his deftly hybridized sound, including PitchforkDancing AstronautIndie Shuffle, and FADER.  He can also count  Annie Mac and Triple J as supporters on radio and fellow music-making champions in BonoboLaurent Garnier and Anna Lunoe. His classical training in percussion lends a strong beat-centricity to his productions, and his background playing in bands manifests itself in carefully considered live performances. Asked to describe Chrome Sparks shows, he says:
“I need instruments; I need oscillators; I need someone flailing around, sticks in hand, trying to destroy a few drums. With the help of my percussive friend, Bill DeLelles, and pre programmed MIDI patterns that are sent to a variety of analog synths and samplers, I’m able to play some of the instruments while the others play themselves. Each instrument’s audio is run back through my laptop, allowing me to loop different parts and build on songs organically. I believe this process creates an effect that’s palpable for the audience, a balance that is simultaneously delicate and extremely powerful.”
