CONCERT REVIEW: GRETA VAN FLEET @MRSMALLS

This review could be VERY easily completed with three words, to be honest.  The night could be summed up as INCREDIBLE, FRESH and ENERGIZING.

I was very excited to get the chance to see and cover Greta Van Fleet. The only thing I wish was that they would have played a bigger venue. They SOLD OUT Mr. Small’s Funhouse in Millvale PA. Rather quickly too. And from what I was told, they turned away quite a few people looking to get tickets the night of the show. This band could have easily packed a bigger venue such as Stage AE or the likes thereof. But we can hope for that the next time they visit Pittsburgh.

The band that consists of brothers Josh Kiszka, Jake Kiszka and Sam Kiszka, and friend and drummer Danny Wagner. The three brothers are musically gifted and will be at the forefront of the music industry for many years to come.

The shows started with a ton of energy and finished the same way.  Josh’s vocal’s while VERY Robert Plant-ish, are BEYOND incredible.  What he can do LIVE is phenomenal. Let alone what he can do on a record. Playing in these smaller venues, there is no taped vocals nor anything mysterious to be done with the sound systems. At Mr. Small’s HE BLEW THE CROWD AWAY with his incredible range and power. I really don’t want to compare Josh to anything that Robert Pant ever did. Many currently are calling them very Led Zepplin-like. However, Josh’s vocals are fresh and more powerful in my opinion. Plus, he plays with his range and ability much more than Robert Plant ever did, so again, I don’t want to compare him to Plant like many have. However, as GREAT of a performer as Robert Plant was, I will compare Josh to him in that regard. Josh kept the crowd in the palm of his hand all night and left them screaming and hoping for more. Black Smoke Rising, Highway Tune and Safari Song were AMAZING. Simply jaw dropping with what Josh can do with his vocal range. Josh’s range and crisp tone were great and he is not showing any signs of wear or tear on his vocals. I hope he takes care of his talent. It is indeed rare and breathtaking to say the least.

Edge of Darkness, Flower Power and When The Cold Wind Blows were equally as impressive. Josh’s blew the roof off Mr. Small’s on Flower Power. Again, his range makes the song.

Jake Kiszka really brought a lot to the table on guitar. He’s young very gifted just like his two brothers. He did some great things on the guitar that only a seasoned very really should be doing. Josh’s other brother, Sam while quiet and mellow at first really stepped out of his shell halfway through the show and shined.  His talent on the keyboards also put energized the show. By the end of the show, Sam was really loosened up and having a great time. With Danny Wagner on the drums and the only one outside the family, he really shined. No real solo, but did have some time where he got to shine on the skins.

The encore brought Highway Song and The Safari Song. INCREDIBLE set enders and the crowd really was into them. There is really nothing more than I can say about this band and the show. If they are putting on the same exact show now on the west coast that they did in Pittsburgh PA, the crowds are getting their money’s worth and telling their friends that they need to see this band and buy their CD.  Which by chance, is being released November 10th. Their new CD will be available on iTunes then and I expect to sell very well and hopefully setting up another leg of an American tour. Hopefully, Pittsburgh and Stage AE are on it.

Led Zeppelin Rock the Royal Albert Hall in 1970- Video

Damian Fanelli of Guitar World recently posted this (originally posted to YouTube in early 2012), which “shows the band at their high-flying best. Jimmy Page coaxes a host of sounds out of his Gibson Les Paul; even the ol’ violin bow makes an appearance or two”.

This clip also appears on a 2003 release called Led Zeppelin DVD.

ADRENALINE MOB and GuitarWorld.com Release First ‘Coverta’ In-Studio Video for ‘Romeo Delight’ (Van Halen Cover)

This is killer…you have to see Portnoy wailing on a classic VH tune.  PMM can’t wait to cover them when they come to Altar Bar Pittsburgh March 14…

GuitarWorld.com has posted an exclusive new video of ADRENALINE MOB recording their cover of ‘Romeo Delight’ (originally by Van Halen) for their new covers album Coverta, hitting stores on March 12, 2013. ADRENALINE MOB, featuring Russell Allen (Symphony X), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), John Moyer (Disturbed) and Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp), will release a series of these in-depth recording videos via GuitarWorld.com in the coming weeks. Check out the current video of ‘Romeo Delight’ at this location.

ADRENALINE MOB guitarist Mike Orlando states, “Recording ‘Romeo Delight’ was an absolute blast for me. I grew up listening to EVH, and from the moment I heard ‘Eruption,’ I was hooked for life! Tracking the guitars was such a blast, as I plugged in my white-and-black Charvel, my trusty ol’ MXR Phase 90 and went right into my cranked-up Marshall JCM800, entering that EVH zone and giving my all to pay tribute to one of the greatest rock guitarists ever! We had a great time with Mike Portnoy’s idea to insert a medley of kick-ass VH parts in the mid-section while going into a great treat before we head back to the final chorus!”

Coverta is an eight-track EP featuring cover versions of some of the band’s favorite songs. Long-time fans of Mike Portnoy are aware of the multiple cover CDs he has released with Dream Theater and with Neal Morse. Coverta is the first CD of covers recorded by ADRENALINE MOB.

ADRENALINE MOB: OMERTA/ In Pittsburgh 3/14

NEW ALBUM: OMERTA OUT NOW/In Pittsburgh @Altar Bar3/14

ADRENALINE MOB features Russell Allen (Symphony X), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), and Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp)

ADRENALINE MOB will be releasing an eight-track EP on March 12, 2013 entitledCOVERTA, featuring cover versions of some of the band’s favorite songs, including songs by Dio, The Doors, Black Sabbath and many more.  Given band members’ respective pedigrees selling millions of albums and perform for sold out crowds globally, fans everywhere will soon be taking the vow of OMERTAin their honor.

On their full length album OMERTA, the group cranks out one bruising hard rock anthem after another.  Songs like the first single “Undaunted” and “Hit the Wall” hijack the right level of instrumental intricacy and taut technicality while grooving and moving fluidly,”This is a new band with a new sound and a new beginning,” declares Portnoy.  “Forget what everyone has done in the past.  I’ll cherish and look back on my 25 years in Dream Theater with great pride, but it’s time to begin this next chapter.  It’s similar to how Foo Fighters gave Dave Grohl a fresh start.  That’s how I look at it.”

Hitting on the heels of OMERTA, and shining a light on the band’s influences, comes COVERTA – a new eight song EP of cover songs.  COVERTA highlights the many different sides of the band.  Tracks like Led Zeppelin’s “The Lemon Song” and The Doors “Break on Through” are real credits to the group’s musical history.  Paying, “…tribute to so many great bands and putting out our own spin on it shows a lot of diversity within Adrenaline Mob,” says Orlando.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine will be covering their show at Altar Bar on 3/14…we highly suggest you break Omerta, tell all your friends, and be there…

RIVAL SONS NEW ALBUM ‘HEAD DOWN’ OUT NOW

Soulful, maximum-blues-infused hard rock band RIVAL SONS’ new album HEAD DOWN is out now on Earache Records and has garnered the band both critical acclaim (including a four-out-of-five star review from The Guardian/U.K.) and a “Breakthrough Artist” award at this week’s Classic Rock Awards show in London. Coming off of a five-week U.K./European headlining tour (having already played to massive crowds in Europe at festivals such as Rock Am Ring and Download, and opening for Guns N’ Roses), RIVAL SONS look to 2013 to showcase the record here in the U.S. with North American tour dates to be announced soon and the physical album hitting stores January 22, 2013.
HEAD DOWN reached #1 on the Rock chart in the U.K. and “Keep on Swinging,” the first single off HEAD DOWN, was featured in last week’s USA Today’s “The Playlist” column, seen HERE.
With their blues bravado, raw riffing and unmatched mystique, the Long Beach, CA quartet evoke the rock of legendary bands like Led Zeppelin. Formed in 2008, the quartet of Scott Holiday (guitar), Robin Everhart (bass), Mike Miley (drums), and Jay Buchanan (vocals) captures that massively huge, guitar-driven classic rock sound, with rock-solid drumming and a riff-oriented approach to songwriting backing up Buchanan’s soaring vocals. The band wrote, recorded, and mixed HEAD DOWN in just 20 days, and the band conjured the same energy that made their last album a fan and critical favorite, while treading new territory altogether. The rawness and immediacy–textured with a myriad of light and shade–produce powerful results. Explains Buchanan: “In the code of the Samurai, any decision must be made between 3 and 5 breaths…Writing by that code forces us to act, go with our instincts and really, truly listen to each other. Creatively, you’re bringing your most immediate instincts.”

Kill Devil Hill Debut

The self-titled debut album from KILL DEVIL HILL, with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, KILL DEVIL HILL), Rex Brown (PANTERA, DOWN) on bass, Mark Zavon (RATT, W.A.S.P., 40 CYCLE HUM) on guitar and Jason “Dewey” Bragg (PISSING RAZORS) on vocals has been tearing up the metal charts.

“Kill Devil Hill” was produced by Warren Riker, (DOWN, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SUBLIME and CATHEDRAL). The KILL DEVIL HILL release will be available in a standard CD edition, an iTunes digital download, and double gatefold LP.

According to Vinny Appice, KILL DEVIL HILL’s sound is “like a cross between BLACK SABBATH, ALICE IN CHAINS and a little bit of LED ZEPPELIN thrown in. It’s heavy, but with a lot of cool hooks and melodic overtones, too.”
