Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and virtuoso guitarist GaryClarkJr. came into Pittsburgh last night to tour his acclaimed record, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim . As Warner Brothers states, “The Story of Sonny Boy Slim is the uncanny evolution of an artist embracing his roots with a rarified grace, style, and an inextinguishable passionwhich reflects his vision as a songwriter, groove master, and the vocal force of nature he has become, while his guitar virtuosity already speaks (quite voluminously) for itself”.
A true test to his talent, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim was written, produced, arranged by Clark, who also plays most of the instruments, with assistance from his long-time live soundman, Bharath “Cheex” Ramanat and Jason Sciba. Backing vocals were provided by his sisters Shawn and Savannah Clark. The album was recorded by Ramanath and Sciba.
The young Texan, Clark, started off with a slow easy jam and then launched into “Bright Lights” to get the crowd warmed up to a night full of incredible tone and texture coming from a six string. Stage AE in Pittsburgh was packed and Clark looked and acted very inspired by the sight of everyone pumped to hear him play. His next numbers were “Travis County” and “Next Door Neighbor News”, keeping with the straight blues vibe. A few songs later in the set he played what many feel could become a classic, “When My Train Pulls In”, and the night continued with a very blues tradition feel, leaving his more “modern” work to take a backseat (setlist here). To watch Clark play is to witness a man at one with his instrument. Like his pre-concert music of Prince, the man can play many things and styles, but he has true mastery in blues guitar, as Prince did with funk. Akin to watching Clapton. Clark may be a living legend and the crazy thing is that it is all just starting for him. Having him play Stage AE, and the last time in town, Mr. Smalls, may be looked back at in the future as crazy impossible, like Bruce or The Police playing The Decade. The man is destined for bigger and greater things and it is a purely emotional experience to watch the man play. Hopefully, he won’t wait a few years again before he comes back to a town that certainly loves him.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine caught up with DJ Baby Yu before his appearance here in Pittsburgh at Soldiers and Sailors on June 23rd with Young Jeezy…
As a DJ, radio show host, and producer, can you describe a “typical” day in the life of DJ Baby Yu?
– Sometimes I dream of having a Baby Yu duplicate. Usually my day consists of waking up sometime in the afternoon, and straight to the DJ studio to prep for my5PM show with Big Tigger on V-103 FM. After my show, I usually hit the gym and stay for around an hour and a half. Later, I’ll put in some production time until I have to go DJ at the club. When I get home from the club I prerecord my 7 AM morning show for Ryan Cameron on V-103 FM. After this I usually hit the studio again and see if I can make some beats before I go to bed. I try and eat between everything as well.
You have had some amazing guest opening spots and done some incredible private gigs as a DJ. Can you relate at least one mind blowing experience or encounter?
– DJ Jazzy Jeff invited me to DJ his 40th Birthday in Philly, where I played nothing but soul, funk and 80‘s music. It was so much fun. Also in 2006, I DJ’d for Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Rihanna during Caribana Festival in Toronto, Canada. To do a Rocafella medley for them felt like I was DJing at their concert. Most recently, Kanye West flew me down to one of his concerts during the “Watch The Throne” Tour, to discuss how the concert could be improved. It was an interesting 2 hour conversation.
When people hear your art, what is it that you want them left with?
– Positivity, motivation, and inspiration.
Where are your favorite places to DJ?
– Tokyo, Japan – Manila, Phillippines – Vancouver, Canada – Toronto, Canada to name a few.
What place or where in the world would you most like to host as a DJ, but have not done so yet?
– Dubai, Rio De Janeiro and Moscow. That would be so dope.
Who are the artists that have had the most influence on what you do?
– Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Aaliyah, Jodeci, Notorious BIG, Bell Biv Devoe.
What was it like collaborating with DJ Swivel in Sato Goldschlag? And who came up with the concept for the Mr. Mister video ?
– It’s an amazing run. Swivel is very talented, and has learned from the best. Working around Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Diddy to name a few, he is a grammy winning engineer, so to work with someone that has so much experience in the music work only motivates me to work harder.
The video was an idea by Aaron our video director. We were both happy with the originality of the video. (See below for the video)
What are your immediate goals in the business and where would you like to see yourself in five years?
– Producing; making music is my immediate and long term goal. I want to continue DJing around the world, on V-103 FM, supporting Young Jeezy as his DJ, and take Sato Goldschlag to an international level.
Along with his weekly club residencies- Baby Yu can be heard on Atlanta’s hottest radio station V-103 (WVEE- V103 FM “The Peoples Station”)
Monday- Friday at 5:00pm on the Ryan Cameron show and Saturday’s from 12pm-1pmEST with his “Midday Motivation Mix Show”. Baby Yu
also continues to do his syndicated radio shows, tuned in by thousands around the globe.
Project Mayhem is a hip hop collective that hails from the city of Chicago. Widely recognized from buzz worthy tracks Such as “Weed and Champagne”, “Lo Sweatas”, and “Dope Party”, the group Project Mayhem looks to revive the aesthetic that once existed in hip hop music. Project Mayhem’s roster consists of five members: Marco Dane, the unmistakable, charismatic narrator; Lennon, the man with the bass in his chest and the beat in his heart; Ish Claiborne, who is lyrical precision personified; Paypa, whose effortless and free flowing style; And last but definitely not least rapper/producer MC Tree, the inventor of his self-branded genre SoulTrap, whose unusual, placatory rap and vocal techniques carry so well over his production with its mystifyingly chopped samples. The beautiful mesh of this organized confusion can only be called Project Mayhem.
Since their induction into the Source Magazine’s “Unsigned Hype” in 2007, this league of extraordinary gentleman have opened for acts such as Common, Curren$y, Erykah Badu, Brand Nubian, EPMD, Kanye West, and many more.
Listed in Complex Magazine’s “10 Chicago Rap Acts To Watch Out For” in Feburary of 2012, the group went on to release “Middle America” in March which has been touted as one of the “Top 10 Chicago Mixtapes of 2012” by FakeShoreDrive.com. That same list included MC Tree’s mixtape, “Sunday School”, which has also garnered national acclaim by being named to MTVhive.com’s list of the “Five Best Mixtapes of 2012 (So Far)”. Tree proved to be the only unsigned artist to be featured on that list landing at #3, only topped by Future’s “Astronaut Status” and Gunplay’s “Bogota Rich”, and landing above Rick Ross’ “Rich Forever”. Tree went on to later be named one of Spin Magazine’s “Five Best New Artists For August ‘12”.
Project Mayhem and its members have also been featured on various other national hip hop blogs and publications such as Ruby Hornet, Nahright, 2DopeBoyz, DJ Booth, The Chicago Reader, Fader, and many more, both as a group and as individuals.
