Deconstruct In Search of New Front-Man!

The story runs deep with Deconstruct. An aggressive, in your face, heavy rock/modern metal band comprised of the brutal, grungy groove oriented guitar riffs of Joe Fraulob (ex-Danzig), the powerful, deep, head-spinning bass lines of Bobby Real (ex-Dedvolt), the bone crushing drums of Tom Frost (ex-Luxt) and vocalist MC Droze’s intense growling and often melodic vocals. Yeah, this band has got it going on … A solid timeline of success, expanded musicianship and continually evolving into a “Post Apocalyptic” Metal genre!

Deconstruct is currently seeking a new front-man to fill the void after original singer Droze moved to another state. MC Droze will be missed and his latest contribution to the soon to be released LP Ashen Empire is nothing short of incredible. “We wish him the best with all his endeavors,” says Fraulob. The full-length album has been recorded, engineered and produced by Joe Fraulob, and mixed by top renowned industry pro, Juan Urteaga of Trident Studios (TestamentMachine Head). Management has been secured under Frankie James (Culture Rock). Professional videos have also been produced by Andy Pilkington of Very Metal Art (see video for “Machine” below) and award winning film-maker Josh Pierson and are ready to be released once the timing is right!

The Deconstruct foundation can be traced to guitarist Joe Fraulob’s 2001 courtship with Columbia Records, when his prior band, Side-Swipe, was targeted by the A&R team of John Weakland (Union Underground) and the legendary John Kalodner (Aerosmith). Once the label threw Side-Swipe into the mix of different producers and spent upwards of $30,000 on demos, the band knew they were on to something big. Ultimately, Columbia felt the demos that Fraulob produced at his own studio were the best, which gave Fraulob and the band the confidence to trust their instincts musically, and to fight for their own path. This gave way to the birth of Deconstruct with Fraulob writing for his new project to include an uncompromising vision for a new sound – dark and heavy yet melodic and dynamic – ready for the radio, but powerful enough to crush skulls in a live setting. Fraulob recorded the first Deconstruct demo at his own studio the Pus Cavern where Fraulob had spent the last decade developing his engineering chops recording Sacramento heavyweights such as The Deftones and began to send this demo out to industry pros. After hearing the demo, David Draiman and Dan Donegan of Disturbed personally chose Deconstruct as opener for their Music As A Weapon 2 tour where Deconstruct’s first show was opening for Disturbed, Chevelle, and Taproot in front of an audience of 5000. Immediately, the band’s prowess as a live act was recognized, and Bill Graham Presents placed the band on several amphitheater shows (Iron MaidenDio, and Motorhead at Sleep Train Amphitheater; and Def Leppard at Irvine Meadows). While building their reputation as one of the West Coast’s most hard hitting live acts, Deconstruct began making headway in the world of Rock Radio. The band’s debut EP “Sign Of Things To Come” received play nationwide, enabling Deconstruct to expand their touring base. The work paid off, resulting in more high profile shows with a diverse array of acts including NickelbackPuddle of MuddDrowning PoolDeath AngelHelmet, and Hed PE. The band’s second EP, a sampler of tracks from their forthcoming album, received radio play on over 100 stations. The single “Time Kills” was added to heavy rotation on commercial station WOBX (98X) in North Carolina. Deconstruct also became the only unsigned band to ever receive play on KRXQ in Sacramento’s “Smash or Trash” receiving a 100% listener “Smash” rating. Deconstruct was definitely on the rise and was then chosen by multi-platinum act Korn as main stage openers for the Korn, Chevelle, and Breaking Benjamin concert at Arco Arena in Sacramento, CA. After 2 successful U.S. tours promoting the first Deconstruct album The Human Condition, Fraulob joined the legendary multi-platinum act Danzig as touring lead guitarist for an incredible 2 year run after which Deconstruct took a hiatus. In 2017 Fraulob joined the legendary Bay Area Metal group Trauma and ended up producing and recording their 2019 album As The World Dies. Recording and touring with Trauma inspired Fraulob to reboot Deconstruct to record a new album then to follow up with more main-stage appearances. The crushing new album, Ashen Empire, features long-time Deconstruct members Fraulob, drummer Tom Frost, and vocalist MC Droze, with additional appearances by drummers Darren Minter (Heathen) and Kris Gustofson (Trauma), and bassist Greg Christian (Testament).

Which brings us to the present, 2021 sees Deconstruct with the strongest, hardest hitting, most talented line-up yet. With Fraulob at the helm with his brutal guitar mastery, the thundering super bassist Bobby Real and one of the best drummers in NorCal, Tom Frost, on board, Deconstruct is firing on all cylinders. All three bring their extensive experience to the table to create a sound that is current but unique, extremely heavy yet mesmerizingly melodic and memorable. There’s no doubt success will once again be risen out of the ashes!! A pro studio and practice room has been built, a new album recorded and mastered, extensive press ready to go out and Deconstruct is tour ready!

However, with the loss of their singer MC Droze, this greatness can’t continue until that void is replaced, so Deconstruct is now placing a call to action to all professional “qualified & stage seasoned” vocalists to front this dynamically structured band. Qualified applicants respond at the email below to arrange an audition.

Metal All-Stars Planning To Record Relief Song For Steve Grimmett’s Medical Costs
Jimmy Kay of Canada’s The Metal Voice streamed a live interview recently with Steve and Millie Grimmett to update fans on Steve’s ongoing medical condition.  Venom Inc.’s Tony Dolan and former Anthrax vocalist Neil Turbin joined the conversation.  It is the second interview Kay has had in the past week’s since announcement of Steve Grimmett’s hospitalization in Ecuador.

During the near hour-long interview, Kay was the first to announce a special fundraiser show in Grimmett’s hometown of Swindon (England).  Planned for April 1, the event is being organized by Brian Keene at Riff’s Bar.  Bands for the event will be announced shortly.

Also announced was a special collaboration of metal artists that are coming together to record Grim Reaper material in effort to help raise additional funds for Steve’s rising medical and recovery costs.  Spearheaded by Dolan, Turbin, Kay, and Sy Keeler (Onslaught), contributors currently include Gary Holt (Exodus), Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest), Blaze Bayley (ex-Iron Maiden), Doro Pesch, Lipps (Anvil), Marta Gabriel (Crystal Viper), Neil Turbin (Deathriders), Jonas Hornqvist (Bleed the Hunger), Ross The Boss (Manowar), Sy Keeler (Onslaught), Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill), Jimmy Mantas (Venom Inc.), Nick Bowcott (ex-Grim Reaper), John Gallagher (Raven), Mantas (Venom), and more to be announced soon.  The recording will be produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Anvil).

Grimmett’s wife Millie gave The Metal Voice an update on Steve’s medical condition.  “He has now had four operations;  yesterday he had the latest to clean the wound a bit more.  Doctors opened it up and put a drain in to stop any further infections.  The infection has now seemed to stabilize.  The wound, however, has been left open.  He can’t fly until ten days after a big operation so the earliest he could fly home is this Friday.  Because of the pressure of the plane, you have risks of blood clotting and renewed bleeding so we have to make sure Steve can actually survive the flight.  It  is a total of 19 hours door-to-door; it’s a grueling journey for anybody.”

Millie continued, “I have a meeting with the doctor tomorrow morning to discuss how he is doing and other recovery options.  There is another treatment using oxygen.  We are hoping they might be able to do that over the next few days which could speed up the process.  Now that I am here, Steve has perked up a bit and it makes me feel a lot better to see him.  We are alone out here and we want to go home.”

“They are very friendly, very nice,” says Millie of the hospital staff, ”even though we don’t speak the same language.  We still have a laugh, making Steve laugh, making him smile.  They do what they can with what they have.  They don’t have the same resources here.  Steve said to me the other day that last week he was in a ward downstairs and the gentleman by him had heart failure and they didn’t have a defibrillator so unfortunately the gentleman died.  They did all they could.  They have done a great job with Steve.”

Lying on his hospital bed, Steve Grimmett shared a few words, “I am very humbled.  I didn’t realize that I meant so much to other people.  I got no words other than thank you.  And when I’m out on my new leg, I’m going to come out and sing for a big party.”

Regarding reuniting with his wife he added, “it was such a relief to have somebody that I could talk to.  She is not only my wife, she’s my best friend and my soul mate.  It makes everything easier.  I found that in this metal community of ours, we have love and respect for each other and to be fair, I’ve never met any assholes.”

Steve Grimmett has been hospitalized in Ecuador since mid-January; the singer was amidst a tour in support of GRIM REAPER’s latest album, Walking In The Shadows.  Millie Grimmett has been updating fans around the globe of the singer’s condition via the band’s official Facebook page since reports started to surface on January 14.  Grimmett has endured multiple operations that have resulted in the near complete loss of his right leg.

Fans have been making donations to a page set up nearly a week ago to assist in the singer’s rising medical costs afer reports confirmed Grimmett’s insurance company has refused to pay.  Donations can be made HERE.
All forthcoming Grim Reaper dates are cancelled.  Updates as they relate to Steve’s status will be shared via the band’s official Facebook page.
The full The Metal Voice video interview can be seen HERE.
Walking In The Shadows is available now.  Profits from the sale of the album from today forward will be donated to Grimmett’s medical costs.  Visit HERE to order.

FORMER IRON MAIDEN DRUMMER CLIVE BURR DIES AT 56

by Graham ‘Gruhamed’ Hartmann March 13, 2013 11:19 AM

From LoudWire.com

Former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr has died at the age of 56. The legendary musician had been suffering from multiple sclerosis for many years, and although an official cause of death has not yet been revealed, the band reports that Burr passed away in his sleep last night at his home.

Clive Burr joined Iron Maiden in 1979, drumming on the band’s iconic first three albums — ‘Iron Maiden,’ ‘Killers’ and ‘The Number of the Beast.’ Burr left Iron Maiden shortly after the release of ‘Number of the Beast,’ and was replaced by current drummer Nicko McBrain by the time Maiden’s next album, ‘Piece of Mind,’ dropped in 1983. Burr went on to perform for acts such as Trust, Stratus, Desperado and others.

“This is terribly sad news,” comments Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris. “Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.”

“I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden,” says vocalist Bruce Dickinson, referring to the band they were both in prior to joining Maiden. “He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family.”

To aid their beloved former drummer in his fight against Multiple Sclerosis, Iron Maiden began the Clive Burr MS Trust in 2002. The band periodically donated proceeds from live shows to Burr, aiding the drummer tremendously thanks to the heavy metal band’s massive drawing power.

Clive Burr will always be known as one of metal’s finest drummers. A true legend behind the kit, Burr’s work remains essential to this day … and we offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Clive Burr. Rest in peace.

WATAIN signs worldwide deal with Century Media Records

Century Media Records is proud to welcome Swedish black metal extremists WATAIN to its worldwide family. Legitimately labeled as genre leaders, deservedly awarded with a Swedish Grammy, playing the world’s biggest stages and touring the globe constantly while reaching numerous top positions in the annual reader’s polls, WATAIN have worked hard and achieved a lot over the past years despite successfully ignoring any kind of conformity and concession to the metal mainstream. Unrivaled in their unwillingness to compromise and clear artistic vision, WATAIN are most befittingly described with the title of BATHORY’s third opus – “Blood Fire Death”, a fact they never fail to underline with their infamous live shows: The stench of rotting animal cadavers, the inferno of candelabras and torches, chalices of blood, darkness and death – WATAIN are a full scale attack on all sensory organs. In days of toothless, sterile, family-friendly metal they embody danger and dread and are rewarded with a maximum of support and appreciation.

WATAIN comments:
“We are writing this from a magical place of desolation and desert-like vastness, where wondrous things are at this very moment taking place. Things that will come to colour our world as well as yours in the strangest hues for many years to come. We are entering this new chapter of WATAIN with a will and confidence to make it the most diverse and rememberable so far. And with the things that we have in mind for the future, it looks like it will be just so. Just wait and see, f***ers! Loud and terrible shall the trumpets of Devils sound…”

“Century Media is massively excited to work with WATAIN. This band has it all: charisma, the firm will to conquer the world, and an authenticity you rarely find these days. Mixed with their creativity and musical impact – this band will make it to the top. They are a healthy slap in the face for any Metal Bourgeois. We are ready to kill for them!” says Antje Lange, General Manager Century Media Europe

“I am very proud and excited to welcome WATAIN to the Century Media family. There are few bands that remind me of when I first discovered metal as a teenager that could give me the same feeling of extreme release and evil such as SLAYER, VENOM and MERCYFUL FATE did. WATAIN is one of those rare bands and I look forward to being a part of their growing career and helping today’s future metalhead find their way!” adds Don Robertson, President Century Media USA.

Formed back in 1998, the first two albums Rabid Death’s Curse (2000) and Casus Luciferi (2003) established the band firmly within the underground scene whereas Sworn To The Dark (2007) and especially Lawless Darkness (2010) helped them conquer a wider audience making them one of the most talked about acts in recent years. Musically rooted in classic black metal inspired by the likes of VENOM, HELLHAMMER, BATHORY, MAYHEM, DISSECTION as well as the grandeur of old IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA, RAINBOW, it is the larger-than-life aesthetics and total dedication to their art that elevates WATAIN beyond almost any other extreme metal band out there. WATAIN is satanic metal at its most frightening and fascinating.

After celebrating their 13th anniversary with the release of the DVD/double live album Opus Diaboli (2012) under the band’s own imprint His Master’s Noise, followed by an US tour with BEHEMOTH, THE DEVIL’S BLOOD and IN SOLITUDE earlier this year plus celebrated shows at Wacken and Bloodstock Open Air, 2013 will see the release of WATAIN’s much anticipated fifth studio album via His Master’s Noise in collaboration with Century Media Records. Beware!

Black Dahlia Murder: A Pittsburgh Pictorial

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The Black Dahlia Murder derived their name from the 1947 unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short, and in Pittsburgh the absolutely killed. With influences ranging from Carcass, At the Gates, Darkane, Dissection, Darkthrone, Morbid Angel, The Haunted, In Flames, Dimension Zero, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Pantera and Megadeth- the band has an interesting mix of very hardcore genres.

Mainly sticking to the genres of melodic death metal, metalcore, and deathcore, when asked to describe what kind of music the band plays, Strnad commented: “I’ve always said that we’re melodic death metal. We are mostly influenced by Swedish bands and Carcass. The heavy end of our sound is the American style creeping in, with some Floridian influences like Morbid Angel, Malevolent Creation and that kind of stuff. We’ve been labeled more often because of our look than our sound, which is dumb, and speaks volumes about what kind of geniuses are out there!”. In an interview with Uranium Magazine, Strnad also stated, “Some bands that get labeled as metalcore are actually good, like Between the Buried and Me or The Red Chord. Metal is what I grew up with, and then I learned about punk and hardcore. But a lot of our ethics, the way we carry ourselves, is more punk…I like that hardcore has a sense of community without the competition you see in metal.”

The only disappointment for many of the Pittsburgh fans was the “early” start of BDM. Most shows at Stage AE start about an hour after doors open, but BDM went on pretty early (6:30) causing many to miss part or all of their set.

SPIRALARMS Announces “Revivalution Tour 2012”

To help accomplish that task, the band has announced a six day tour of California (and Reno, NV) that will take place throughout the month of November.

Directly supporting SPIRALARMS will be California rock n’ rollers ZED and alt-rockers SWERVER will open each show. See directly below for all current tour dates and learn more about the tour at www.facebook.com/Revivalutiontour.

SPIRALARMS

Friends since the age of 15, Tim Narducci (Lead Vocals) and Craig Locicero (Lead Guitar) bonded over their love of heavy metal and hard rock music. Although the two remained friends throughout the years, they both went their separate ways and started bands of their own. After years of playing with their respective bands, the two friends contacted each other and decided it was time to start playing music together again, and in 2004 SPIRALARMS was born. Rounding out SPIRALARMS is Cornbread (Bass/Vocals), who had recorded and toured the US and Europe extensively with the band Vicious Rumors, Brad Barth (Keyboards), Anthony Traslavina (Guitars) and Ron Reeden (Drums).

Last, the band is no stranger to the road. With multiple West Coast tours, a U.S. tour in 2010, the band is comfortable with the hard work of touring to build a core audience. SPIRALARMS has also been active playing out live supporting such acts as Black Label Society, MSG, Kill Devil Hill, and performing at Graspop 2007 with Iron Maiden. The band is currently finishing their new album, Freedom, set to be released soon.

ZED
San Francisco Bay Area’s ZED takes it cues from the greats like Zeppelin, Sabbath and AC/DC, but combines them with their contemporary musical influences such as Clutch, Rage Against the Machine and Queens of the Stone Age, creating a mixture that is new, yet familiar. ZED is Pete Sattari (Guitar/Vox), Rich Harris (Drums), Greg Lopez (Guitar), and Mark Aceves (Bass).
In April 2010, ZED released their first full-length album, The Invitation, which they had been brewing in the studio for over a year. The Invitation has a hard driving, aggressive sound but with solid groove that can’t be ignored. In June of 2012, ZED entered Sonic Room Studios with SPIRALARMS’ Tim Narducci engineering and producing their follow up to The Invitation. Word on the street? It’s their best work to date. The album is due this fall and will be included in their set during the Revivalution tour.

SWERVER
San Jose, CA veteran band SWERVER consists of Jimmy Arceneaux (Guitar/Vox), Dan Lawson (Drums) and Stevie Loveless (Bass). The band has been known to deliver heavy riffs, wrapped in memorable hooks, all served up with a slightly darker tone than their contemporaries. Tapping into heavy topics such as depression, racism, and various addictions, SWERVER reaches out to the fans who listen to music, rather than those who just hear it.

His interview list is a who’s who of heavy metal and hard rock legends, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament and Mercyful Fate. His work has appeared in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and on news and music websites. Many of his stories have been published in The Record, the largest daily newspaper in Northern New Jersey.

What sets Aberback apart, in addition to his strong writing style and dedication to his craft, has been his passion for giving heavy metal bands a shot at attracting new audiences through mainstream newspaper exposure. Over the years he’s introduced such bands as Nile, Cradle of Filth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and many, many more, through the pages of The Record and other publications, to music fans, and even metal fans, who likely would have never heard of these bands. Not often do you find daily newspaper writers publishing stories about the likes of D.R.I., Diamond Head, Everytime I Die, Iced Earth or The Gathering.

***An articulate and well-informed speaker with a vast knowledge of the history of rock-and-roll, musically and socially, with a specific emphasis on heavy metal and hard rock, BRIAN ABERBACK is available for book talks, panel discussions and as an expert commentator for television and radio programs.

Check out some great reviews on Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal:

“Refreshingly levelheaded and loaded with sourced quotes, it’s that rare middle-grade biography (or “rockography,” as the title page insists) that is able to trace a band’s history, revel in its rock awesomeness, and be blunt about such things as drug abuse, all the while keeping things at an age-appropriate keel.”
–Booklist

“Through this book, old and new fans alike learn about the band’s history and impact on the music industry.”
–Children’s Literature

West of Hell’s Spiral Empire a Thrashers Heaven

West of Hell is a heavy metal band that formed in West Auckland, New Zealand but has since made their home in Vancouver, BC. According to their press package, “Their objective was to create a sound that would preserve their legendary influences, whilst having modern elements”. From the very first listen to the opening track of Spiral Empire, “Father of Lies”, those influences can be heard loud and clear. Frontman, Chris “The Heathen” Valagao, has a Bruce “Dickinsonian” vocal range that blends quite nicely with the guitar god-like assault and brutally pounding rhythms.

All of the songs are powerful with no let up in pace. The outstanding guitar pyrotechnics by Jordy Knute and Sean Parkinson have much in common with the likes of DragonForce, Iron Maiden, Veils of Maya, and even Metallica. The guitars do not overshadow the double bass drum thrashing by Andrew Hulme though. The bass (Jordan Kemp) and drum centered opening for “To War” is a great example of how well all the elements within the band fuse together. Lyrically, West of Hell” seems to lean to the epic side with great narratives in the tradition of Maiden or Testament. Spiral Empire focuses on musicality with a tinge of old school metal blended with what documentarian Sam Dunne would more than likely classify as thrash. The results are a formidable release that should gain fans rather quickly.

West of Hell was fiercely determined to produce an album of high quality hiring producer and Juno Award winning engineer Rob Shallcross (Strapping Young Lad, GWAR, Zimmers Hole, Gene Hoglan, Fear Factory, Cocaine Moustache) with whom Valagao had worked with on previous projects. The payoff for their efforts is huge. The production is a beautiful blend of instrumentation that helps keep the music focused and not muddy. If you are a fan of thrash metal with lyrics you can understand and a voice that hearkens back to the heydays, Spiral Empire needs to be on your download list.

Highlights: “Soul Taker”, “Demon Sent”, “To War”, “Father of Lies”
