Code Orange have shared “Only One Way,” which is streaming today via Adult Swim’s Singles Series.  Recorded with producer Will Yip at Studio 4 in Conshohocken, PA, “Only One Way” is the first new music from the band since the release of their widely acclaimed LPFOREVER, which earned Code Orange a Grammy nomination and topped several “Best of 2017” lists including: Rolling Stone’s “20 Best Metal Albums of 2017,” Revolver’s “20 Best Albums of 2017,” and The Independent’s “Top 20 Rock & Metal Albums of 2017.”

Code Orange commented on the new track explaining, “We wanted to write a song that felt like something structurally sound and melodic, being chewed up and spit out by a machine; our machine.”   The band added, “We plan to release material on a more regular basis in an attempt to break down rock and metal’s formulaic pattern of long breaks between outputs. This means we must work twice as hard, so we will. The hurt will go on. The end will never come…”

WILL PITTSBURGH GET THE FINAL SLAYER TOUR?

The question on every metalhead’s mind yesterday was whether Slayer would hit their town on the final tour with the likes of Lamb of God, Anthrax, Behemoth, and Testament.  The answer for Pittsburgher’s is YES!!!  See below for details…

After making some of the most brutal, breathtakingly aggressive, all-hell’s-a-breaking-loose music ever created, being one of the four bands that defined an entire musical genre and being the band that other heavy acts are measured against and aspire to…after nearly 37 years, releasing 12 studio albums, multiple live recordings, compilations, live video and two box sets, playing nearly 3000 concerts in all corners of the world, receiving countless awards including five Grammy nominations and two Grammy awards, Gold records and other accolades…having its own exhibit in the Smithsonian Institute, gracing hundreds of magazine covers, experiencing the devastating loss of a founding brother, and even appearing on “The Tonight Show,” the age of Slayer, one of the greatest thrash/metal/punk bands of this or any age, is coming to an end.
Slayer announces that it will do one last concert tour around the globe to thank their fans for all of their support over the years, for making the last three-and-a-half decades so packed with good times and unforgettable experiences, and will then move on.
Lamb of God, Anthrax, Behemoth and Testament will support Slayer on the first leg, North America, of its final world tour.  Tickets go on sale to the public this Friday, January 26 at 10AM local time. Very limited Slayer onstage + meet & greet+ exclusive merchandise packages will be available.  Log on to www.slayer.net for this and all ticket purchasing info.
Randy Blythe of LAMB OF GOD says: “If you are lucky enough to be invited to play even just once with living legends like Slayer, it’s an incredible honor. Slayer gave LAMB OF GODour very first two overseas shows. Slayer has subsequently taken us on several full-length tours, both at home and abroad. The guys in Slayer and their crew have also always been very, very cool to our band. It is irrefutable that Slayer helped create the genre of aggressive metal, and all modern bands of that ilk owe them a huge debt – I know we do. To be asked to be a part of their final tour – well, it just makes you stop and realize just how lucky you are. Hail Slayer! We’ll see you on the road…”

ABOUT SLAYER – www.slayer.net:
For more than three decades, Slayer’s onslaught has proven the band to be the supreme thrash-metal band on the planet, the band that other heavy acts are measured against and aspire to. Their membership in “The Big Four” – Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax – the four bands that defined the thrash/metal genre – secures their place in music history.
The two-time Grammy-winners have accumulated an abundance of certified Gold Albums along with “Best…” awards from media outlets all over the world, including Kerrang!SPINMetal HammerRevolver, and Esquire.  Throughout Slayer’s history, the band has never faltered in unleashing its extreme and focused sonic assault, and, unlike many of its contemporaries who commercialized their sound, Slayer has remained crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the mainstream.  Slayer’s founding member, guitarist Jeff Hanneman passed in 2013, and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt has been filling in for him since.  Paul Bostaph, who was Slayer’s drummer from ’94 – ’01, rejoined bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and guitarist Kerry King in 2013, and is back behind the kit to stay.
In September 2015, Slayer released Repentless, the band’s 12th, and what would be their final studio album, the first without Hanneman and first with producer Terry Date, to widespread rave reviews and the highest chart debut of the band’s career.  The band also teamed up with director BJ McDonnell for three high-concept and brutal music videos for the album’s title track, then for “You Against You,” and the most recent, “Pride in Prejudice,” racking up a combined 25-million+ YouTube views.  In 2017, Dark Horse Comics published the three-issue “Repentless” comic book series based on McDonnell’s original story concept for the videos and written by “Metalocalypse” director Jon Schnepp.
On January 22, 2018, Slayer announced its decision to do one last world tour to thank its fans for their decades-long support, and then move on.  All Hail Slayer.
ABOUT LAMB OF GOD – http://www.lamb-of-god.com:
Richmond, VA natives LAMB OF GOD are one of heavy music’s most successful and uncompromising bands.  When the band’s first major release, New American Gospel, was released in 2000 it was immediately touted as a classic within the genre. AllMusic stated it best, “The essential signatures of post-Pantera metal are in abundance on Lamb of God’s inaugural album. New American Gospel provides a mighty oak upon which gritty American metal’s faith is maintained, effectively bridging the ’90s’ insistence upon drill-sergeant technicality and the old school’s determined focus on riff construction.”
Some predicted a sophomore slump – that no band could top a debut album so strong.  They were proven wrong, with the release of 2004’s Ashes of the Wake, an album that not only exploded stateside (certified Gold by RIAA) but also saw the spread of LAMB OF GODto all corners of the world.  The band’s first DVD, Killadelphia, followed shortly after and was certified Platinum.  Then, with Sacrament (Album, 2006, #8 debut on the US Billboard Hot 200), LAMB OF GOD were honored with a Grammy nomination for the track “Redneck”, which would be the first of five Grammy nominations for the band to date. Next came Walk With Me In Hell (DVD, 2008) and then the band’s fourth album Wrath in 2009, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart, and then Resolution, which debuted at #3. Shortly after the release of Resolution, vocalist Randy Blythe was arrested in Prague, and spent 30 days in jail on a charge for which he was later acquitted (and lead to Blythe’s bestselling memoir, Dark Days, as well as the film As The Palaces Burn).  After regrouping,LAMB OF GOD lost no ground with their latest full-length album, VII: Sturm Und Drang, the album was #3 in the US, #1 in Canada, #2 in Australia, #3 in Finland, #7 in UK, #12 in Germany and #13 in Japan, and #13 in Netherlands. “Overlord“, the first single from VII: Sturm Und Drang, achieved a new milestone for the band when it reached the Top Thirty of US Active Rock Radio Chart (Mediabase).  In late 2016, LAMB OF GOD paid tribute to late, longtime fan and friend Wayne Ford with the release of The Duke EP, which raised funds and awareness for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The EP release coincided with a charity campaign offering personal items such as Blythe’s Ashes Of The Wake Gold plaque, signed signature model guitars, handwritten lyrics and more.
Since inception and through it all, LAMB OF GOD‘s consistent and unwavering commitment to their music – and their fans – has kept them a critical and fan favorite worldwide, selling millions of albums and tickets around the world.
LAMB OF GOD is Randy Blythe (vocals), Mark Morton (guitar), Willie Adler (guitar), John Campbell (bass), and Chris Adler (drums).

ABOUT ANTHRAX – https://anthrax.com:
As part of the band’s 35th anniversary year, Anthrax released one of 2016’s most-anticipated metal/thrash albums, For All Kings (February 26/Megaforce in North America/Nuclear Blast internationally), that debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Chart, and #9 on the Top 200, becoming Anthrax’s highest-charting album in more than two decades.  Written by drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello and guitarist Scott Ian, the dynamic triumvirate whose unique composition chemistry is, in part, what sets Anthrax’s music apart from other bands’ in the same genre, combined with Joey Belladonna’s breathtaking vocals and the searing guitar leads by newest member Jonathan Donais, it’s no wonder the album and the band’s live shows have consistently received tremendous reviews.
Over its 35-year career, Anthrax has been a pioneering band with its unique style, sound and heavy brand of thrash metal, and, as Metallica’s Kirk Hammett put it, “one can hear their influence on any number of up and coming bands.”  Anthrax has sold in excess of 10-million units, received multiple Gold and Platinum certifications, six Grammy nominations and a host of other accolades from the media, industry and fans.  From the race and genre barriers Anthrax helped break down in 1988 when they collaborated with Public Enemy on “Bring The Noise,” to becoming a card-carrying member of The Big Four – with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth – as one of the four bands that defined the speed/thrash metal genre – to being the first metal band to have its music heard on Mars when NASA played “Got The Time” to wake up the Mars Rover, Anthrax continues to break ground andinnovate.  On December 13, 2016, the Epiphone/Revolver Music Awards presented Anthrax with its first-ever “Innovator Award” to acknowledge the band’s contribution to music.  On April 27, Anthrax will release “Kings Among Scotland,” a live DVD shot at the band’s 2/15/16 show at Glasgow’s historic venue Barrowland Ballroom.
ABOUT BEHEMOTH – http://behemoth.pl
Behemoth have been carving out their claim as one of the world’s top extreme / black metal bands since their inception in 1991. That claim was solidified in 2014 with the release of the band’s tenth album, The Satanist. The record marked their triumphant return following front man Adam “Nergal” Darski’s battle with Leukemia. “‘The Satanist‘ is magic. It’s dangerous. It’s adventurous, and it’s organic,” states Nergal. While instantly recognizable as the work of the Polish blackened death quartet, it takes their sound in previously unimagined and riveting directions. A writhing, densely layered, brutally violent and sinister record, it is quite unlike anything ever unleashed within the canon of heavy music. As such it demands attention, offering ever greater sonic and emotional depths with every listen. This is evident in the band’s videos for the title track, as well as “Messe Noir” and “Ben Sahar”. Nergal continues, “You may hear the title and think it’s very primitive and one-dimensional, and yes it is, but when you look beyond that it’s as primitive as it is complex and multidimensional, and that applies to everything about the record.” Behemoth‘s lineup is rounded out by Inferno (drums), Orion (bass), and Seth (guitar).

The Satanist debuted at #34 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in the United States. In their home country of Poland, the album became their second consecutive #1 debut, along with 2009’s Evangelion. Since the release of The SatanistBehemoth have published their official biography “Behemoth: Devil’s Conquistadors” as well as Nergal’s own biography, “Confessions of a Heretic: The Sacred and the Profane: Behemoth and Beyond.” The books are available worldwide now.

For over three decades, the Bay Area thrash quintet-Chuck Billy [vocals], Eric Peterson [guitar], Alex Skolnick [guitar], Steve DiGiorgio [bass], and Gene Hoglan [drums]-has consistently delivered unadulterated, unbridled, and unbreakable metal in its purest form without compromise or any signs of slowing down. Over the course of seminal releases ranging from The Legacy and Practice What You Preach to The Gathering and The Formation of Damnation, which won “Best Album” at Metal Hammer’s 2008 Golden Gods Awards, the group’s sales exceeded 14 million worldwide with 2 million in the U.S. alone. Most recently, 2012’sDark Roots of Earth and 2016’s Brotherhood of the Snake assaulted the charts, both debuting within Billboard’s Top 20 chart.

Concert Review: Rusted Root Pittsburgh PA @ Station Square

Review and photos: Ed Thompson

Heading out to cover and photograph Rusted Root this past Friday was more than an adventure.  It was more of a goal and vision. Keep in mind, this review is not meant to be about me at all. But my health recently took a turn for the worse having been diagnosed with skin cancer.  The date on the calendar that was circled for my surgery was June 22nd. The next date circled and marked was June 23rd. The night I was going to cover and photograph a band I have always liked and felt a “powerful” feeling to over the years. That band is Rusted Root. And the band also promised to perform some new material for the first time ever. So, I was even more excited and had more urgency to get to the show. Rusted Root is a brand that I feel I kind of got to hear developed back in the years 1986-1989 while hanging out with lead singer Michael Glabicki and Jenn Wertz in high school. Hearing the two of them sing with Mike playing his guitar have always been powerful and great memories to me.

Fast forward to this past Thursday, with half my face bandaged and swollen from my surgery, I felt the need to get to the Root show and see and hear Mike and his bandmates play their rhythmic, tribal and powerful hymns to help me heal and more so “feel good”. And it worked!! For those two hours, I felt like everyone else and my pain truly disappeared. I also never once felt the big bandages that covered half my face.  For that, I thank this great group of musicians and individuals.

With THAT out of the way. Rusted Root once again OUT performed themselves the last time I shot them. Having just seen them back in early April at Jergal’s Rhythm House in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, I had an idea what tonight’s show was going to be like. But boy was I wrong. Tonight’s show at Pittsburgh Station Square was truly a completely different show. The setlist was different, the atmosphere was different and the melodies that tie their songs from one to the other were different too. I can never keep count, but tonight Root’s Liz Berlin played like 309 different instruments. Sometimes two or three at the same time. Her ability to do this amazes me more and more each show I see Rusted Root. Vocals are not up for discussion. Her vocals are tops amongst female vocalists. She is like a chameleon. She can sing and harmonize with anyone doing anything.

Michael and his bands mates hit the stage exactly at 9 pm to a huge crowd outside in the steady rain at Pittsburgh’s Station Square.  The rain held off till the band decided to hit the stage and then it baptized everyone there from start to finish. The opening song ironically was Rain. An incredible song and one that truly set the tone for the damp night. It however in no way made the crowd even think about heading for shelter. I think it may have been a sign for more onlookers to come join the Root Party just starting. The transition from Rain into VooDoo was great and unexpected. I never expected VooDoo early in the show but it was a nice change. Man, Not Machine followed and was as always powerful. The lyrics and music give me chills every time.  And like I said earlier, at this point Liz Berlin had used around 15 instruments to add to the already great melodies of the show. In reality, Liz had only used about 4 so far, but you get my point. She can do anything on a stage. And then some.

Glabicki and his bandmates blew through their set list keeping up with the increasing crowd size and continuing rain.  Glabicki’s vocals were unbelievably strong tonight. Rested strong. No strain or crackling at all. This would be the first show for Rusted Root on their latest mini-tour taking them through August.  Heading into the end of the show and subsequent three encores, Root played one of the band’s anthems and crowd favs X T C. In the ending part of the song following the last chorus, Mike’s vocals sounding like a steam engine coming back into the station at Pittsburgh’s Station Square. He left zero notes on the stage so to say closing out the set. X T C was a great ending for the show and really set up what would be a great three song encore. Before X T C, Root ran through more crowd favorites such a Monkey Pants and David Bowie’s Rebel, Rebel, a Root regular lately on their set list history.

Glabicki came out for a solo moment to kick off their encores that transitioned into Scattered which showed just how truly gifted Glabicki is on this guitar. Fast and so smooth. So very rhythmic and soulful. The rest of his band mates joined Glabicki for another crowd favorite; Send Me On My Way, a song that put Rusted Root on the map both nationally and internationally back in the early 1990’s. Glabicki fed off the crowd’s energy for the song and vice versa for the crowd off Glabicki. Berlin’s vocals were awesome too on Send Me. The other highlight of the song was guitarist Dirk Miler providing the flute end and obviously very important part of the band’s anthem. A really great way to wind down for the night. Closing out the night, was the powerful Back To The Earth. What can you say? Yet another feather in the band’s cap and for me the third or fourth exclamation mark for tonight’s concert.

The show tonight was as always great. I enjoy getting out to shoot Rusted Root and talk to Mike however short or long it may be.  The band sounds like they have some more new material to play and possibly release down the road. Two possibilities that any Root faithful should be happy to hear. Root plays June 30th in Portage County Ohio and in Sherman New York to kick off July.  The band will play the Red Rock’s in Colorado for the 4th of July. That’s a show I would not want to miss.

Devin Townsend Project – “Stormbending”

Official Website: http://www.hevydevy.com
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/dvntownsend
Recorded at The Armoury Studios in Vancouver, Canada with Townsend and Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood (Periphery, Animals as Leaders), Transcendence sounds absolutely massive. From the moment ‘Truth’—a re-work from the Infinity album—monstrously blends into the soul-stirring ‘Stormbending’ to the undulating cool of mid-point jam ‘Secret Sciences’ and Ween cover ‘Transdermal Celebration’, Townsend and crew have engineered a modern-day classic. The sheer scale of tracks like ‘Failure’, ‘Higher’, and the majestic title track is at once daunting and inviting. Transcendence pulls the listener in like a movie score. It has the emotional heft of Rosenman’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and the mega-riff power of Black-era Metallica.

Six Organs of Admittance @ClubCafe 4/6

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE IS SCORCHING INTO A NEW DAWN

BURNING THE THRESHOLD OUT FEBRUARY 24TH 2017

In preparing for the first album of non-Hexadic Six Organs of Admittance music since 2012’s Ascent, Ben Chasny had a think about what he’d be saying in his own tongue for the first time in a half-decade. As ever, a head-full of ideas were driving him to think and speak music as a spirituality superimposed onto a reality, with the ghosts of both whispering at each other. In the end, what sits in our listening ears is the sound of communion. Burning the Threshold brings a wealth of Six Organs-styled lightness into one of his sweetest musical meditations yet.

With a spacious acoustic sound stage, Burning the Threshold may actually more resemble 2011’s Asleep on the Floodplain or 2005’s School Of The Flower. All of this is speculative, comparative, unverifiable – but our sense of what is true tells us that nobody plays acoustic music quite like Six Organs of Admittance, and that furthermore, nothing sounds so much like Burning the Threshold as Burning the Threshold.

Ben is in a particularly expansive mood this time around, singing and playing with all the thoughts affixed to a quiver of potent melodies launching forth and arcing out through dimensions, seeking infinite space. This space radiates out from the album’s first single, “Taken By Ascent”, a seven minute plus burner that engulfs the surrounding realm with empathetic waves. Featuring the thrilling vocal accompaniment of Haley Fohr, the massive drumming of Chris Corsano, and flourishing keys of Cooper Crain, “Taken By Ascent” exemplifies Six Organs of Admittance‘s furvid push into new and thrilling territory with Burning the Threshold.

With this new music, Ben Chasny has created a potent tonic for our times. Looking at the world through clear eyes beneath a knitted brow, but with a laugh rising up from its heart, Burning the Threshold brings us a powerful draught of essence. Listen to “Taken By Ascent” on NPR’s Songs We Love  below and mark your calendars for 2017 in anticipation of Six Organs’ special release show in London and the massive US tour that follows!

M83 Announces Collaboration with Cirque du Soleil

Montreal, December 5, 2016 – As tickets go on sale to the public today, Cirque du Soleil is thrilled to announce that international artist M83 is the composer and musical director of Cirque du Soleil VOLTATM, its new production presented by Sun Life Global Investments for next spring. After record-breaking sales in Montreal this year, the show will be presented under the Big Top in the Old Port starting April 20, 2017.

Anthony Gonzalez, the sonic author behind the sublime sound of M83 is known for his epic space-age future pop. In 2011, the Grammy-nominated album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming revealed M83 to mainstream audiences with the hit single “Midnight City.”

“We have been following the work of M83 for many years and have always been convinced of the incredible potential of integrating his music to a Cirque du Soleil production,” says director of creation Jean Guibert.  “VOLTA is a contemporary show brimming with energy, but it is also deeply human and theatrical. We were seduced by Anthony’s ability to create melodies that are both epic and poetic and transcend the heart and soul. We are honored that he agreed to lend his talent to this project,” explains writer and director Bastien Alexandre.

About his collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, Gonzalez says: “When Jean and Bastien first approached me, I was immediately excited about the idea of working with Cirque du Soleil. Not just because they are a company known throughout the world, but also because I was deeply attracted by the story of VOLTA, and the spirit that underpins the show. The story of VOLTA is ours. It is a tale of a generation who is calling for change and I was very keen to contribute to telling this story. I’m deeply honored to be part of the Cirque team and it’s a wonderful new challenge in unknown territory for me. Ultimately, it’s challenges like this that I find so inspiring and drive me to make the music that I do.”

VOLTA tells a spellbinding story about the freedom to choose and the thrill of blazing your own trail. Inspired in part by the adventurous spirit that fuels the culture of action sports, the show weaves the adrenaline rush of acrobatics into a visually striking world driven by a stirring melodic score.

VOLTA will be presented under the Big Top in Montreal’s Old Port starting April 20, 2017. Tickets can be purchased for these performances online starting today at www.cirquedusoleil.com/volta

Elvis Costello @Heinz Hall Nov. 1

Get tix here!!!

Elvis’ autobiography Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink, will be released to paperback on Oct. 11

Elvis Costello has followed his musical curiosity in a career spanning more than 30 years. He is perhaps best known for his performances with The Attractions, The Imposters and for concert appearances with pianist Steve Nieve. However, he has also entered into acclaimed collaborations with Burt Bacharach, The Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, guitarist Bill Frisell, composer Roy Nathanson, The Charles Mingus Orchestra, record producer and songwriter T Bone Burnett and Allen Toussaint.

Costello’s songs have been recorded by a great number of artists. The list of performers reflects his interest in a wide range of musical styles: George Jones, Chet Baker, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Robert Wyatt, Charles Brown, No Doubt, Solomon Burke, June Tabor, Howard Tate, the gospel vocal group The Fairfield Four and the viol consort Fretwork with the countertenor Michael Chance. In 2003, he began a songwriting partnership with his wife, the jazz pianist and singer Diana Krall, resulting in six songs included in her highly successful album ‘The Girl In The Other Room’.

images-uploads-gallery-ec_book_promo_photo_credit_mary_mccartney_2During his career Costello has received several prestigious honors, including two Ivor Novello Awards for songwriting, a Dutch Edison Award with The Brodsky Quartet for ‘The Juliet Letters’, the Nordoff-Robbins Silver Clef Award, a BAFTA for the music written with Richard Harvey for Alan Bleasdale’s television drama series ‘G.B.H.’ and a Grammy for “I Still Have That Other Girl” from his 1998 collaboration with Burt Bacharach, ‘Painted From Memory’.

Elvis Costello and The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. During the same year he was awarded ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award. There have also been a number of Grammy nominations for his recent albums ‘When I Was Cruel’ and ‘The Delivery Man’.

The late-2003 Deutsche Grammophon release ‘North’ – an album of piano ballads composed, orchestrated and conducted by Costello – retained the number one position on the Billboard Traditional Jazz Chart for five weeks.

In 2004 Costello was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song – “The Scarlet Tide,” sung by Alison Krauss in the motion picture “Cold Mountain.” The song was co-written with T Bone Burnett.

The summer of 2004 saw Costello presenting a series of concerts as part of the Lincoln Center Festival in New York City. Following concerts with the Metropole Orkest and The Imposters, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, conducted by Brad Lubman, gave the premiere concert performance of ‘Il Sogno’, Costello’s first full-length orchestral work.

The music was originally commissioned in 2000 by the Italian Dance Company, Aterballetto, for their adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. Following performances in Bologna with the Orchestra del Teatro Communale, the ballet was staged throughout Italy, Germany, France and Russia.

‘Il Sogno’ was subsequently recorded by The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson-Thomas. The recording was released in the late 2004 by Deutsche Grammophon and stayed at the top of Billboard’s Contemporary Classical Charts for 14 weeks.

Elvis Costello was commissioned by The Royal Danish Opera to compose an opera based on the life of Hans Christian Andersen. “The Secret Songs,” a “work-in-progress” cycle extracted from the opera, was given its first performance in Copenhagen in October 2005 to an appreciative audience response and enthusiastic reviews. Costello sang both of the leading male roles, Andersen and that of the showman P.T. Barnum, while the leading female role of Jenny Lind was taken by Swedish soprano Gisela Stille.

In January 2006, Elvis Costello was a featured artist at the Sydney Festival in Australia, presenting a series of contrasting concerts. The first reunited Costello with the Brodsky Quartet for excerpts from ‘The Juliet Letters’, while in the second half, Steve Nieve, double-bassist Greg Cohen and soprano Antoinette Halloran joined Costello and the Brodsky Quartet for several newly arranged excerpts from “The Secret Songs.” Costello and Nieve then gave a second concert, in which they drew on some of Costello’s rarely performed compositions.

The festival appearances concluded with two concerts with the Sydney Symphony conducted by Alan Broadbent at the Opera House. The program consisted of a suite from ‘Il Sogno’, followed by a number of Costello’s songs arranged for orchestra by Costello, Sy Johnson, Bill Frisell, Vince Mendoza and Steve Nieve. The program also included compositions by Charles Mingus and Billy Strayhorn with Costello’s lyrics and songs written by Costello and Burt Bacharach for the album ‘Painted from Memory’.

Many of these compositions are also featured on ‘My Flame Burns Blue’, the live recording of Costello’s performance with the Metropole Orkest at the 2004 North Sea Jazz Festival that was released in March of 2006 by Deutsche Grammophon coupled with the suite of ‘Il Sogno’ highlights.

Later that spring, Costello, Nieve and conductor Alan Broadbent presented a program similar to their Australian tour throughout the U.S., including appearances with San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, Austin and Baltimore’s symphony orchestras.

2007 saw Costello tour extensively with The Imposters and also with Allen Toussaint throughout the USA and Europe. In autumn 2007 he undertook a highly successful tour, performing solo on “The Bob Dylan Show.”

In late 2007, Costello completed his work on a commission from The Miami City Ballet when he collaborated with world-famous choreographer Twyla Tharp. The work, entitled “NIGHTSPOT,” was premiered in Miami to great critical acclaim in March 2008. A new album with The Imposters entitled ‘Momofuku’ had already been recorded in secrecy in a period of just seven days and was released on April 22, 2008.

In December 2008, Costello launched the inaugural season of his internationally acclaimed music television series Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…. Spectacle is a compelling blend of the best of talk and music television that offers a fly-on-the-wall perspective on the creative process with an extraordinary and eclectic array of guests joining host Elvis Costello to chat, perform and share their passion for all kinds of music. The program’s eclecticism and depth reflect its uniquely qualified host, a songwriter and performer comfortable in almost every genre imaginable; a musicologist of formidable breadth and knowledge; a contributor to Vanity Fair; and a noted wit whose stint as guest host on “The Late Show with David Letterman” won rave reviews.

First season’s guests included: Sir Elton John, Tony Bennett, Lou Reed, Julian Schnabel, Smokey Robinson, The Police (Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers), James Taylor, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Rosanne Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Diana Krall, John Mellencamp, Jakob Dylan, She & Him (Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward), Norah Jones, Jenny Lewis, Renée Fleming and President Bill Clinton.

The second season of Spectacle will begin airing in late 2009 and feature guests including Bono & The Edge, Neko Case, Sheryl Crow, Levon Helm, Ray Lamontagne, Lyle Lovett, Nick Lowe, John Prine, Ron Sexsmith, Bruce Springsteen, Richard Thompson, Allen Toussaint and Jesse Winchester.

On June 2, 2009 Hear Music released Costello’s ‘Secret, Profane & Sugarcane.’ Produced by T Bone Burnett and recorded by Mike Piersante during a three-day session at Nashville’s Sound Emporium Studio, ‘Secret, Profane & Sugarcane’ debuted at #13 on the Billboard 200, Costello’s highest album chart position since 1980’s Get Happy. Following its release, Costello toured extensively with the featured musicians on the album dubbed the Sugarcanes – Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan, Mike Compton, Jeff Taylor and Dennis Crouch.

BEACH SLANG Shares New Album on NPR First Listen/ Live @Cattivo 10/22

Philadelphia‘s Beach Slang will release their new album, A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings, on September 23rd on Polyvinyl Records. The album is available now to stream via NPR First Listen who says, “Beach Slang, pulls off exactly what it promises. A spiritual descendent of The Replacements – as well as a sonic cousin to bands like The Gaslight Anthem and Japandroids, who share its gift for dramatic pronouncements about life, death and rock ‘n’ roll – Beach Slang rattles the rafters with grace, power and concision.” Listen to the album HERE.
The band recently released the music video for their single “Atom Bomb” with Noisey, who called it “the fastest rager from A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings.”
Beach Slang’s second full-length is a crash-and-thunder collection of songs about what it takes to keep yourself going, to make it through the rest of the night-hell, through the rest of your youth-and beyond. Frontman James Alex wrote much of A Loud Bash Of Teenage Feelings on their first album’s support tour, during which he spent a lot of time with the kids who’d picked up the record.
The band previously shared the song “Punks in Disco Bar.” The video was described byNPR as “a glimpse into what it’s like to be young, misunderstood and out of place, yet finding belonging in each other. It’s the perfect complement to ‘Punks In A Disco Brand an ode to the motifs and life-affirming mission of Beach Slang.” Watch it HERE.
A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings Tracklist:

Praise for Beach Slang:
“A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings single and song of the day “Punks In A Disco Bar” channels the same exuberant energy found throughout the group’s debut album. Guitar riffs recall the best of 90’s pop-punk and James’ gravely voice emanates enough emotion to fill a stadium.” – KEXP
“Packed with charred guitar riffs, seething feedback and heart-rate-raising drum fills, the song is another of Alex’s unifying anthems. Influenced by the stories of countless fans whom the band (including bassist Ed McNulty and guitarist Ruben Gallego) met during a tumultuous year on the road, the song earnestly touches on the energy and alienation of youth, and on rising above our struggles together.” – NPR Songs We Love

“Punks in a Disco Bar… is fist-pumping rock splendor, all big and wild and free.” – USA Today
“As with everything Beach Slang puts out, the song is a raw, loud, and everything you want in a punk song, but is also still melodic and contains plenty of heart.” – Baeble Music
“‘Punks in a Disco Bar,’ the first track from the record, a typically rousing and clattering track that will probably make your day 20 percent better.” – Noisey
“The song will certainly be instantly recognizable to fans of the band’s previous work, with the same never-caring, heart-punching, loud-things-loving lyrics and thick Minneapolis-style riffing of Beach Slang’s debut LP – if a touch wearier than last time out.” – Spin
“the heart-on-the-sleeve punks have already become the kind of band that fans rush to get tattooed all over their bodies. Well, those fans had better make room for some new ink…” – Consequence of Sound
“This new track seeps with feelings of youth and their accompanying frustration. Very punk guitar drowns the entire two minutes and 41 seconds, and the vocals don’t hold anything back. It’s just what you’d expect from a song called “Punks In A Disco Bar,” and that’s not a bad thing.” WXPN

ABOUT GREEN DAY
Green Day is an American punk rock band composed of vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool. Formed in 1986, Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band’s early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, its major label debut Dookie (released through Reprise Records) became a breakout success and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the United States. Green Day was widely credited with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.  Green Day’s follow up albums Insomniac (1995) and Nimrod (1997) each sold over two million albums and were certified Double Platinum, and Warning (2000) was certified Platinum.  2004 brought the band’s rock opera American Idiot which reignited the band’s popularity with a younger generation and sold over six million copies in the United States.  Green Day is one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway.  On April 18, 2015, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of the 2015 class in what was their first year of eligibility for induction. On October 16, 2015, Green Day released the documentary Heart Like A Hand Grenade, an unprecedented behind the scenes look at the writing and recording of their legendary album American Idiot.

Gary Clark Jr. @StageAE Pittsburgh: Virtuoso Guitarist Tells The Story of Sonny Boy Slim

Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and virtuoso guitarist Gary Clark Jr. came into Pittsburgh last night to tour his acclaimed record, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim .  As Warner Brothers states, “The Story of Sonny Boy Slim is the uncanny evolution of an artist embracing his roots with a rarified grace, style, and an inextinguishable passion which reflects his vision as a songwriter, groove master, and the vocal force of nature he has become, while his guitar virtuosity already speaks (quite voluminously) for itself”.

A true test to his talent, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim was written, produced, arranged by Clark, who also plays most of the instruments, with assistance from his long-time live soundman, Bharath “Cheex” Ramanat and Jason Sciba. Backing vocals were provided by his sisters Shawn and Savannah Clark. The album was recorded by Ramanath and  Sciba.

The young Texan, Clark, started off with a slow easy jam and then launched into “Bright Lights” to get the crowd warmed up to a night full of incredible tone and texture coming from a six string.  Stage AE in Pittsburgh was packed and Clark looked and acted very inspired by the sight of everyone pumped to hear him play.  His next numbers were “Travis County” and “Next Door Neighbor News”, keeping with the straight blues vibe.  A few songs later in the set he played what many feel could become a classic, “When My Train Pulls In”, and the night continued with a very blues tradition feel, leaving his more “modern” work to take a backseat (setlist here).  To watch Clark play is to witness a man at one with his instrument.  Like his pre-concert music of Prince, the man can play many things and styles, but he has true mastery in blues guitar, as Prince did with funk.  Akin to watching Clapton. Clark may be a living legend and the crazy thing is that it is all just starting for him.  Having him play Stage AE, and the last time in town, Mr. Smalls, may be looked back at in the future as crazy impossible, like Bruce or The Police playing The Decade.  The man is destined for bigger and greater things and it is a purely emotional experience to watch the man play.  Hopefully, he won’t wait a few years again before he comes back to a town that certainly loves him.
