We toured with them on off shows from the Soundwaves festivals in Australia and I remember thinking what a great package/lineup this would be to bring to the states, and now it’s happening.
GAME ON!!!” BK

Gojira Vs. Pittsburgh Stage AE: Video Interview, Show Pix, and Review

Gojira may have been labeled as openers for Slayer on their current tour across North America, but more and more they continue to entertain like they are the headliners for the evening.  Having won over fans the old fashion way (hard touring) Gojira have become the go to act to hook up with for fan-bands like Metallica and Lamb of God.  Their latest effort,  L’Enfant Sauvage (The Wild Child), is without a doubt in every serious metal fans top five of 2012.  In other words, Gojira is a headliner in all senses, and were the perfect match to go out with the almighty Slayer.  Watch here as we check in with singer/guitarist Joe Duplantier about all things Gojira:

Error
This video doesn’t exist
Gojira is a force to be reckoned with live.  As Joe Duplantier (guitar/vocals) told us he’s like a “wild pig” on stage.  He certainly has the intensity of a wild animal, as well as his bandmates.  The fact that they have the technical precision to replicate their material is absolutely mind blowing.  The French metal outfit is so multi layered in what they do and it’s a real treat to see peoples reactions when they first hear or encounter them for the first time.  One hundred percent of the time they are absolutely blown away.  The crowd in Pittsburgh was no exception last night ().  To eavesdrop was to hear reactions of amazement followed by quick steps to their merch table after Gojira’s set (personally I highly suggest the artwork of Mario on drumheads…so unique and amazingly cool!). And what a set it was.  Opening with “Explosia” from L’Enfant Sauvage, Joe, his brother Mario (drums), Jean-Michel Labadie (bass) and Christian Andreu came out with massive intensity and force.  They forged on with “The Axe” (L’Enfant Sauvage), “Backbone” and “Heaviest Matter in the Universe” off of  From Mars To Sirius, “Love”, as song that shows off their deep environmental roots “I know the reasons why I failed The stars illuminate my being Behold thy servant, you the force around that makes the planets be”.  They continue pounding on with “Flying Whales”  (From Mars to Sirius) “L’Enfant Sauvage”,  “Toxic Garbage Island” from The Way of All Flesh and ended on a crushing high note with “Vacuity”.  If you do not know this band, well you need to, now.  Gojira is the future of metal and will carry the torch far, far into the future; taking the torch from  the like of Slayer when they are ready to pass said torch on.  Until that time the fire burns bright straight from the mouth of Gojira.

Banger Films Launches Final “Extreme Metal” Crowndfunding Push

Award-Winning Metal Filmmakers Join Forces with Underground Metal Community to Complete “Extreme Metal”

After an enormously successful IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign raising nearly $40,000, Grammy-nominated and Juno-winning Banger Films is embarking on a final push to create the “Lost Episode” of the series Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal. The episode will take viewers on an unprecedented journey across Europe and North America to tell the story of metal’s most aggressive and misunderstood sub-genre.

“Our first IndieGoGo campaign was a huge success and we were blown-away by the support of the metal community,” says Banger Films co-founder Sam Dunn. “The research, writing, travel and filming is now complete and we’ve captured some amazing interviews and footage. But we need to turn this footage into an episode!” The new campaign kicked off Friday, August 9th. Details of the campaign, including a brand-new trailer featuring exclusive footage from Banger’s Extreme Metal filming trip, can be found here: igg.me/at/LostEpisode

Originally broadcast on VH1 Classic (USA) and Much More Music (Canada), Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn’s series Metal Evolution presented 11 episodes based on the “Heavy Metal Family Tree” originally shown in their groundbreaking documentary, Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey. Host and metalhead-turned-anthropologist Sam Dunn crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of Heavy Metal across its 40+ year history, covering everything from the Pre-History of Metal and Shock Rock to Grunge and Thrash Metal. But one very important episode was left out: Extreme Metal. “Some of the networks felt that Extreme Metal was too heavy or too niche. We’re out to prove that Extreme Metal is metal’s most vital sub-genre and that metal would probably die without it!,” says Dunn.

Tom Gabriel Warrior, legendary frontman for extreme metal bands Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, and Triptykon, was interviewed by Dunn for the episode: “It was an absolute honour and a pleasure to host Sam and his outstanding team at my place in Zurich. That extreme metal has been overlooked in this series so far is a scandal. This episode is utterly overdue!”

Bands appearing in the episode include Venom, Celtic Frost/Hellhammer, Slayer, Napalm Death, Carcass, Death, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Enslaved, Gojira and more. The episode will also feature some renowned locations in the history of Extreme Metal including Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida, as well as travel footage from Norway, Switzerland, UK, US, and Hellfest (France), one of the world’s biggest metal festivals.

Contributors’ support for the new IndieGoGo campaign will cover costs of finishing the episode which includes editing, archival and music licensing, onlining, sound mixing and other post-production costs. “People are often surprised by how much making quality film and TV costs. It requires a lot of hard work from a team of talented people to ensure we make the best possible show. Extreme Metal deserves the same high-production value and attention to detail that we gave the other Metal Evolution episodes”, adds Dunn. “I’m not getting paid to make this episode but what matters to me is that the Metal Evolution series is finally completed!”

Gojira and Devin Townsend SELL OUT Mr.Smalls, Pittsburgh PA

Since the cancellation of the 2012 North American summer tour dates with Lamb of God and Deathklok, Gojira finally made their way back to Pittsburgh at Mr. Smalls in Millvale. The voyage of the French Death Metal quartet had been much anticipated by fans from all over. Vans and buses with out of state license plates halted to a stop near the venue mid-day, and metal-heads alike sifted through the doors like a clown car. The energy and camaraderie was thick in the teasing spring air and sun, as an omen that this was going to be an experience of a life-time for all.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Devin Townsend himself for the second time, hours before the doors opened. As myself and Chief of Operations Alan Welding walk into his dressing room backstage of the venue, we are greeted by the pleasant echo of Townsend ripping through a new amp head. After Townsend energetically and genuinely asked us how were both doing, we jumped right into our extensively interesting interview.

After meeting with Townsend, who is unbelievably down to earth and intelligent, we ran into a few other down to earth dudes, to say the least. Catching up with Gojira themselves, Joe Duplantier on vocals and rhythm guitar, and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass was another incredible highlight. The guys chatted with us for a few minutes, asking if I was sick since they could hear it in my voice, and disclosing that they too, were also feeling under the weather. As a fan (and when I say fan, I mean A HUGE FAN), you never really know what you’re going to get when you meet your most revered musicians. ALL of Gojira’s discography plays on my iPod constantly, and “The Way of all Flesh” NEVER makes its way out of my car. Joe and Jean-Michel were extremely friendly and confirmed my admiration for their music, and the embodiment of the positive image they portray to their fans all over the world.

Hours later, the Atlas Moth, an American Post-Metal band from Chicago, warmed the stage with an impressive tone for The Devin Townsend Project, and Gojira. Townsend followed, surprising the hell out of me with his gritty performance. Behind closed doors this guy is a total gentleman and overall extremely intelligent goofball. On stage he is a total ‘effing rockstar. Switching out numerous guitars after nearly every song and flipping pedals left and right, this guy and his band members absolutely blew me away with their huge sound. Townsend’s ludicrous stage presence made him all the more charming and ominous, and his Rocky-Horror style really appealed not only to me as a new fan, but to the rest of his loyal followers.

The finality was the entrance of the ultimate rockstars themselves. Gojira besieged with “Explosia,” and an energy and aura that I’ve only ever dreamed of experiencing with a live performance. Something is so very different about Gojira in so many ways. Not a second went by that they didn’t have the entire audience by the pits of their stomachs, unable to blink with anticipation for every synchronized beat. I had to catch myself in the moment and stay with the performance in order to absorb it to the fullest, as much as I wanted to drift into a lullaby. Slaying songs like, “Vacuity” and “The Art of Dying” transitioned the entire set in the strongest, and most flawless performance I’ve ever witnessed. Everything was perfect, down to the implausible drum solo that left us totally speechless, to the faultless extended experimental solo from Mario Duplantier. Nearing the end of the set, Mario delivered an intensively moving statement paralleling, “This song is about the inner child that we all have protecting us. Always be true to yourself,” segwaying into “L’Enfant Sauvage.” Gojira was demanded back to the stage with an ear-shattering encore, where they absolutely killed “The Gift of Guilt” off of their new album, L’Enfant Sauvage. At no point in time was anyone lacking in energy or true commitment and passion to give Pittsburgh an incredible show. Their entire performance just made about 75% of every other metal band I’ve ever seen look like little girls. These guys were so crisp and clean that one could literally hear a pin drop at a pause from anywhere in the venue, and Jean-Michel delivered one of the most undulant bass performances unlike any I had seen. Oh yeah, and did I mention they were sick?

“‘Epicloud’ is huge…Devin Townsend is to music as what Michelangelo was to painting and sculpting.” — ABSOLUTE PUNK.net

“…an exhilarating amalgam of show tunes, metal, gospel, techno, prog, pop, rock and musical genres that only exist in Townsend’s head.” — DECIBEL MAGAZINE

“Devin Townsend continues to excel at being one of the noteworthy prolific musicians in metal today with the excellent ‘Epicloud’.” — LAMBGOAT.com

“Devin Townsend’s new album, ‘Epicloud,’ is incredible; it might be Devy’s White Album…It melds a whole lot of different styles into a series of dangerously catchy tunes; a whole lot of the album isn’t metal, but every second of it of is great, and yes, most certainly EPIC.” — METAL SUCKS.net

“…a bombastic and catchy record, filled to the brim with some of the best pop metal you will ever find…’Epicloud’ is without a doubt the strongest collection of songs on any Townsend record to date.” — HEAVY BLOG IS HEAVY.com

PMM’s Top 5 Metal Releases of 2012

2012 has been a pretty amazing year for Pittsburgh Music Magazine, hell it was the year of our inception. Many of you may have noticed that although we cover all genres around here, two of our writers are pretty serious metalheads. To try to narrow down the top 5 metal moments of 2012 is a pretty hard task, it was a very good year for releases in the genre that very few are brave enough to adore outloud and even fewer truly understand. Metal has progressed and has so many classifications at this point that one needs Sam Dunne’s charts from VH1 and Wikipedia just to wade through it all. Trust this writer, it has been an amazing year in music, and just keeping up with all that is going on in the little niche of tunes I adore can be no small task. So with further adieu, here are PMM’s Top 5 Metal Masterpieces of 2012:

betweentheburiedandme2012
1. Hands down without a doubt, Between the Buried and Me’s: The Parallax 2 Future Sequence is the metal record of the year. With an unbelievable mix of prog metal mastery, this band refuses to slow down and seems to only get better. Many of their peers think the same, just check out some different band comments on Facebook (i.e. Mike Portney (Faith No More/ Ozzy) or Scott Cowan (Deception of a Ghost)). Brutal one second, soothing the next, piercing and thought provoking all the next…don’t miss this one whatever you do.

2012DeftonesPress1071112

2. The “comeback” of the year was The Deftones. Many of you probably expected me to say Soundgarden, and that is definitely honorable mention, but Chino and crew have come back with a vengeance. Koi No Yokan is the best since White Pony and is ear bending from first note…like they never went away. Sickeningly talented and devastatingly brilliant.

witchcraft-header

3. Witchcraft, the little doom/stoner rock band from Sweden, swept me off my feet this year with Legend. A bit Queens of the Stone Age meets Sabbath and Deep Purple thrown in with some Soundgarden grungy mix. It’s 70’s metal with a new twist.

gojira_68b-credit-gabrielle-duplantier (1)

4. French metallers Gojira provided the soundtrack for our trip from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to catch this years Mayhem Festival. Un-freakin-believable. I still can’t get enough of this record and everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I discover more. Best thing they have ever put out to date, solid from end to end.

04675cbf-9194-4325-9dc3-5c2f8b3f795bwallpaper
5. So many could sit at this spot. And I am going to totally cheat…a four way tie. Periphery, Battlecross, The HAARP Machine, and Deception of a Ghost are all “newer” bands that have infected me this year and made me a loyal fan. Please check these guys out and tell them we sent you when you go see them…for they all bring it big time live. Go buy ALL their CD’s now- you won’t regret it!

Devin Townsend to stream sold out Retinal Circus tomorrow and Tour with Gojira & The Atlas Moth (including PGH)

Tomorrow (October 27th), renowned multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and now ringleader, Devin Townsend is gearing up for one of his biggest accomplishments to date: The Retinal Circus. Set to take place at London’s historic Roundhouse venue, this one-night only event has been sold out for over a year now; however, fans worldwide can still watch this event live online, thanks to Northern Music Company & InsideOut Music in association with Live Music Stage.

To watch Devin Townsend’s Retinal Circus online, please visit www.livemusicstage.com/retinal-circus to purchase your tickets (tickets can be bought now for £7.99, which is roughly $13 and €10; paypal and all major credit cards are taken). Then on October 27th at 7PM GMT (8PM CET//2PM EST//11AM PST//2AM Perth//3AM Tokyo//5AM Melbourne time, etc.) head back over to www.livemusicstage.com/retinal-circus, log in with your ticket number and watch the folly unfold.

Devin describes the Retinal Circus as: “a retrospective of my career in music to date, with the central theme being a metaphor of how life and the adventures therein are a ‘circus’ of sorts. The show involves a cast of characters and guests that support this theme through carnival type performances. A story about how a troubled young man dreams of fantastic scenarios, (illustrated through the music of my back catalogue), which ultimately crests in the characters realization that life is all about the relationships we have with each other. This is the first opportunity I have been given to make theatrical representations of my music.”

This three hour plus performance will include:

– A retrospective of Devin Townsend’s entire career
– Full choir and theatrical cast
– Visual and aural enhancements unlike any show Devin has done to date
– Several special guests
– Circus and carnival performances and cast

THE SAFETY FIRE posts video for “DMB (FDP)” that documents Download 2012 and recent GOJIRA tour

THE SAFETY FIRE has always pushed the boundaries of technical, progressive metal since their inception. With their expansive atmospheres and soaring melodies, it’s easy to see why vocalist Sean McWeeney, bassist Lori Peri, drummer Calvin Smith and guitarists Derya “Dez” Nagle & Joaquin “Jo” Ardiles are now at the forefront of their ever growing genre. THE SAFETY FIRE released their debut album Grind The Ocean to critical acclaim at the beginning of April this year through InsideOut Music.

The band recently finished a UK tour with French metal titans GOJIRA, which followed a killer show at this year’s Download Festival at Donington Park. The band documented these dates and have created a stunning live video for the track “DMB (FDP).” Dez explains a bit more about how the video was made and why they picked this track in particular:

“‘DMB (FDP)’ is one of our favourite songs to play live and was an obvious choice for this video. We love touring, and wanted to give a wider audience a glimpse into what our live show is all about. We filmed over several UK dates, including our performance at Download and our recent run with GOJIRA. We were lucky enough to have our good friend Jamie Carter produce the video, whose eclectic credits include RISE TO REMAIN, CONOR MAYNARD, FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND and PROFESSOR GREEN to name a few. Other filming duties were handled by our friends and crew including our brü Adam Nolly Getgood, who recently joined PERIPHERY. More importantly this video will help spread the message of #FDP. Jokes.”

Lamb of God/Dethklok/Gojira Tour Cancelled

ADULT SWIM STATEMENT REGARDING UPCOMING TOUR:

In light of circumstances beyond our control, the upcoming Dethklok and Lamb of God with Gojira summer tour has been canceled. Refunds will be available to customers who already purchased tickets through their point of purchase. We thank Dethklok fans for their continued support and look forward to releasing information about the band’s upcoming third album and a planned fall tour in the coming weeks.

LAMB OF GOD STATEMENT REGARDING UPCOMING TOUR:

Due to the continued incarceration of LAMB OF GOD singer Randy Blythe in the Czech Republic, the band’s co-headline tour with Dethklok scheduled to begin August 1st in Seattle is being cancelled. The band regrets the decision but the uncertainty of Randy’s release makes it impossible to carry on with the tour. Upon Randy’s release, it is the band’s intention to rebook a tour in the fall and at this time the band fully intends to participate in the Mayhem Cruise in December.

LAMB OF GOD wishes to thank Dethklok, Adult Swim and Gojira for their support and patience as well as all of the promoters who had dates on the tour. Last but certainly not least, the band thanks all of the fans who bought tickets for the tour and who have been supportive of Randy and the band over the last month that Randy has been held in Prague. Without the fans, there is no LAMB OF GOD.

Metalocalypse’s DETHKLOK and LAMB OF GOD Announce North American Tour

This summer, two of the biggest names in metal, LAMB OF GOD and DETHKLOK, will join forces for a 34-show North American tour kicking off on August 1 in Seattle, Wash. The three-time Grammy® Award-nominated band from Richmond, VA and the world’s most brutal animated death band from Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse animated series will shred their way through cities throughout in the U.S. and Canada ending September 15 in San Francisco, CA.

The upcoming DETHKLOK and LAMB OF GOD with GOJIRA summer tour marks the return of LAMB OF GOD to North American stages where they will support their latest album Resolution, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart when it was released earlier this year. As in tours past, Brendon Small, the co-creator and composer behind DETHKLOK, will bring the animated band to life on stage each night alongside an all-star band including the legendary Gene Hoglan, Bryan Beller and Mike Keneally. Building on the success of Dethklok: The Dethalbum and Dethklok: The Dethalbum II from Williams Street Records, Small is currently in the studio working on the band’s third album release scheduled for later this year. Additionally, new episodes from the fourth season of Metalocalypse currently air on Adult Swim Sundays at 12:15 a.m. (ET/PT).

Joining the co-headliners at each stop along the tour will be special guest GOJIRA, the French metal band that will perform songs from its upcoming album release, L’Enfant Sauvage, which will be released in the U.S. on June 26 with Roadrunner Records. Pitchfork describes the new album as “breathless and awesome.”
