Interview with Bob Meadows of A Life Once Lost (In Pittsburgh at Garfield Art Works 12/14)

A LIFE ONCE LOST roars into Pittsburgh at the Garfield Art Works next Friday, December 14 with Revocation and Ken Mode. Bob Meadows, lead vocals, took some time to speak to Pittsburgh Music Magazine about the frustrations of the music business, playing Pittsburgh, taking and giving vocal lessons, their new release “Ecstatic Trance”, and the inspiration for the lyrics behind “Madness is God”, check it out by listening here…

A LIFE ONCE LOST has existed on the forward edge of modern metal, where progression and innovation collide with tradition, since its inception. From day one, the path the ALOL have blazed has not only been defiant but also their own.
A LIFE ONCE LOST was formed in ’99 in the Philadelphia suburbs by Doug Sabolick (guitars) and Bob Meadows (vocals). The nascent band immediately forged a noisy, high-impact wall of sound combining dissonant, modern aggression with the hallmarks of traditional metal. Almost as soon as ALOL had songs, the band started cutting their teeth in the Philly-area DIY circuit playing alongside their peers in Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Lamb of God, God Forbid, and more.
Early releases followed on Deathwish, Inc. and Robotic Empire, and ramped up to 03’s punishing ‘A Great Artist’, their first proper full-length. ‘A Great Artist’ saw them take hold of their dark, rhythmic sound and took A LIFE ONCE LOST from a Northeast favorite to a true national band. It was the catalyst that enabled them to get signed to Ferret Records and to then embark on their first national tour(s) alongside Between the Buried & Me among others.
Then ALOL released its’ sophomore album, the more refined ‘Hunter’, in ‘05 and moved to the forefront of the New Wave of American Heavy Metal. The band conquered America for the next 2 years touring as part of Ozzfest 2006, as well as direct support tours alongside Lamb of God, Clutch, Opeth, Strapping Young Lad, As I Lay Dying, Every Time I Die, High on Fire and more.
Their 3rd album ‘Iron Gag’, released in ’07, saw significant critical acclaim. That album had ALOL introducing traditional rock grooves and a more confident swagger into their already-explosive sound. The ensuing ‘Iron Gag’ tour saw the band crisscross North America and Europe, from Alaska to Mexico and London to Moscow respectively, once again alongside High on Fire; The Dillinger Escape Plan + new tour mates, Suicide Silence, and Job for a Cowboy.

At the end of the ‘Iron Gag’ World Tour in ‘09, they begin practicing again only to find fractures in the band. After a year plus of writing, Sabolick and Meadows were faced with their most difficult decisions yet. In order to realize their vision for the next evolution of A LIFE ONCE LOST, they needed to scrap almost all of the new material; cut ties with the other members, and start again on their own.

ALOL’s process was arduous, and required Bob Meadows and Doug Sabolick to rebuild everything from the ground back up. The writing process was intense while the two tried to meld a diverse range of influences – Killing Joke to Can, King Crimson to Kraftwerk, Fela Kuti and more – while respecting and remaining true to the sonic art that they had always traveled.

Three years in the making, A LIFE ONCE LOST’s new album ‘Ecstatic Trance’ (Season of Mist), is the product of that unwavering determination and raises their patented rhythmic attack to hypnotic new levels of precision and expression. Huge, jagged riffs and churning, syncopated rhythms are the blueprint for the emotive guitar-playing and explosive vocals of Sabolick and Meadows respectively. Dark washes of melody and ominous Hammond Organ tones color epic tracks such as “Madness Is God, “Something Awful”, and “The Blues”, giving their material a bold, raw sense of expression unlike any they’ve shown before. ‘Ecstatic Trance’ is one of 2012’s best metal albums, and proves that the path of A LIFE ONCE LOST is always moving forward.

God Forbid Makes a Lasting Impression on Pittsburgh

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

God Forbid truly dominated at Metal Hammer’s “Trespass America Festival” that landed in Pittsburgh August 14. Check out their new CD Equilibrium- it may be their finest work to date and proves why God Forbid is at the top of the metal game.

God Forbid forges the gritting, teeth-baring bile of American death metal together with the melodic overtones of the so-called “New Wave of Swedish Death Metal” promulgated by bands like In Flames, Arch Enemy, and the late, lamented, and legendary At the Gates. Equal parts Pantera, Hatebreed, and early Sepultura, the central New Jersey based band have carved out a name for themselves touring with the formidable likes of Cradle of Filth, Nile, and Candiria, and playing gigs with bands as diverse as Sevendust, Sick of it All, Soul Brains, and Shadows Fall. God Forbid’s music cuts a clear, brutal path through metal’s inter-genre barriers as swiftly as the band’s diverse ethnic makeup cuts across color lines. The men of God Forbid — hulking, imposing vocalist Byron Davis; bassist Beeker; drummer Corey Pierce; and the brotherly guitar team of Doc Coyle and his older sibling Dallas — first emerged with the Out of Misery EP in 1998. Their debut full-length album, Reject the Sickness, followed in 2000 through the small but fierce indie imprint 9 Volt Records. The album received a ton of spins on New Jersey/New York-area metal radio powerhouse WSOU, and eventually garnered the attention of the L.A. offices of Century Media Records, who quickly signed God Forbid to a worldwide deal. The result was 2001’s Determination album, a sharp, crisp, and incredibly focused effort showcasing the band’s songwriting talents and penchant for diverse musical interplay and technical wizardry. Subsequent touring with some of the biggest acts in metal and hardcore music followed, solidifying God Forbid’s position as an up-and-coming contender for a highly regarded position amongst metal’s most elite. Even Cradle of Filth vocalist Dani Filth was suitably impressed, reveling in the band’s intensity and commenting on it nightly from the stage while touring across the States alongside them. That same year, the Reject the Sickness EP was reissued with extra tracks as the band embarked on tours with Opeth and crossed the pond for sold-out U.K. and European shows (Ryan Downey http://www.allmusic.com/artist/god-forbid-mn0000666117).

In 2004, they released Gone Forever, which along with a slot on Ozzfest’s second-stage, increased their profile considerably. The next year, they released IV: Constitution of Treason, a concept album about the end of the world. It was their first album to enter the Billboard 200, debuting at number 118. In 2005 and 2006, they supported Trivium on their UK tour along with Mendeed and Bloodsimple. In late 2006 and early 2007, they headlined the Chains of Humanity tour.
In 2006, God Forbid’s “To the Fallen Hero” won the Independent Music Award for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Song. They released a DVD on June 10, 2008, and their fifth studio album, Earthsblood, was released on February 24, 2009, and landed at number 110 on the Billboard 200. God Forbid toured across the United States and Canada in the No Fear Energy Music Tour featuring Lamb of God and others in April.
In March 2009, Dallas Coyle left the band. His replacement for the upcoming tour was named as former Darkest Hour guitarist Kris Norris. He was later replaced by Matt Wicklund. In July 2009, God Forbid participated in the Rockstar Mayhem Festival along with Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine, Cannibal Corpse, All That Remains, Slayer, Marilyn Manson and many others.
In April 2010, the band issued an update that they started work on a new album. The new album is titled Equilibrium and was released on March 26, 2012 (wikipedia).

Battlecross Release New LIve Video- In Pittsburgh 8/14 Tresspass America Festival

Detroit, MI’s BATTLECROSS and Bloody-Disgusting.com have just released a brand new, live music video for the track ‘Kaleb’, cut from the band’s latest Metal Blade Records release, Pursuit of Honor. The video happens to be directed and edited by Ryan Glisan of death metal band and label-mate Allegaeon. The live footage in the video was filmed at the July 13th kick off date of the TRESPASS AMERICA festival in Broomfield, CO.

“Kaleb is the one song on the album that I’m the most proud of because I wrote it about my son,” states vocalist Kyle “Gumby” Gunther. “To have this be the track that Ryan used is really special to me, because seeing the intensity of our first arena show with such a hard-hitting song really gives the world a good idea of how much I love my boy. As a band, we’ll never forget that show. We were nervous as all hell!”

The TRESPASS AMERICA festival is still at large, also featuring headliners Five Finger Death Punch, with support from Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Emmure, Pop Evil, and God Forbid. Battlecross Join Trespass America Festival

20120510-101633.jpg

Detroit, MI thrashers BATTLECROSS are currently making waves across the United States as the next big thing in heavy metal while touring with the Occupation Domination tour. BATTLECROSS will continue to slay the states with Origin, Cattle Decapitation, Decrepit Birth, Aborted, and Rings of Saturn through the tour’s close in Lawrence, KS on May 18. Earlier this week in California, the band filmed a video tour update and TRESPASS AMERICA Festival preview message, now available for viewing exclusively at MetalInjection.net.

The TRESPASS AMERICA festival is a newly minted music festival set on revitalizing the metal scene with some of the most current and credible bands in hard rock/metal. Co-produced with Metal Hammer, the biggest metal magazine in the U.K., the tour kicks off July 13 at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO, and will cover 31 cities in two months between July and August across the United States. BATTLECROSS will be joined by headliners Five Finger Death Punch, as well as the reunited original line-up of Killswitch Engage. The TRESPASS AMERICA Festival also features Trivium, Emmure, Pop Evil, and God Forbid. Tickets are on sale now; log onto http://www.trespassamerica.com for complete details.

BATTLECROSS has come a long way since their recent signing with Metal Blade Records and their release of their debut Pursuit of Honor in August 2011. Since its release, the single ‘Push Pull Destroy’ was the #1 Most Requested Metal Track for five weeks (Sirius XM Liquid Metal Devil’s Dozen), remains a stable on the Liquid Metal channel, and the track’s video has racked up over 700,000 YouTube views in the last five months. BATTLECROSS has received killer reviews across the internet and in print publications throughout North America and overseas and was named “Band of the Month” in Metal Hammer Norway and Metal Hammer Spain, so it should be no surprise that this blue collar, hard-work ethic that comes from the band’s five musicians – Kyle “Gumby” Gunther/vocals, Tony Asta/guitar, Hiran Deraniyagala/guitar, Mike Kreger/drums, Don Slater/bass – translates into a potent force on record as well as on stage. BATTLECROSS is also confirmed to sail the seas with the first annual MAYHEM FESTIVAL Cruise this December 7-10.
