Clutch and Primus Sell Out Stage AE

On Sunday night, July 30, 2017 the drinking crowd of Clutch and the stoner crowd of Primus converged on the three rivers of Pittsburgh at Stage AE for a sold out show.  Both bands brought their brand of rock and loyal followers for a great party atmosphere on a beautiful night.  The results were a melding of the traditional with the non-traditional for a crowd pleasing party.

Clutch tend to rule Pittsburgh when they come to town.  Having been born and bred in close by Maryland, the band has been a town fave since their early inception.  Holding the record for Stage AE alcohol sales, the band did not disappoint the house this time either, with long lines at every drinking stall.  For Clutch fans, the set list was a treat in that they played quite a few new tunes, some without solid titles as of yet.  Combine that with smashers like “Earth Rocker”, “Electric Worry”, and “X-Ray” and you have a formula of cool sneak peaks with songs a fan fan would have on their “must hear” list.

Neil Fallon is always a blast to watch and that voice is by now iconic.  While guitarist Tim Sult and bassist Dan Maines do their thing and hold it down solid, the other eye catcher is definitely J.P. Gaster, the master of percussion.  Watching his style and facial expressions as he gets into it is infectious and a clinic in jazz/blues drumming.  As usual, the traditional blues based heavy rockers killed it and were a blast to watch.

Primus, on the other hand, cannot be put into the traditional category.  Primus is definitely weird and weird in a good sense.  They play some strange mixes of melody along with voice effects and odd tunings all to tremendous effect.  Since their first smash in “Sailing The Seas of Cheese“, Les Claypool and co. have done their own thing their own way.  Having witnessed the band at Lollapalooza and opening for U2 on the Zoo TV Tour, the addition of animated graphics and lush background visuals was an added plus that went with the music quite well.  Of course, the Primus fans knew every word to every song and have kept this 90’s band not only alive but thriving without radio play and pandering to the record company.  A very amazing feat in this day and age. (Setlist below courtesy of setlistFM.com).

One does not come to this type of show to see crazy jumping around or pyrotechnics, but rather fantastically played music.  Both bands delivered the goods to their fans in spades.

FORMER MISFITS GUITARIST DOYLE WOLFGANG VON FRANKENSTEIN SIGNS LABEL/DISTRIBUTION DEAL

unnamed-7As announced on the Black Carpet at the REVOLVER MUSIC AWARDS last night, former MISFITS guitarist DOYLE WOLFGANG VON FRANKENSTEIN has signed a label and distribution deal with EMP LABEL GROUP, who will not only release, AS WE DIE, the upcoming sophomore LP from the legendary guitarist’s eponymous project DOYLE, but distribute all releases for the guitarist’s label MONSTERMAN RECORDS.

EMP, the label vessel of Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, with operations headed up by former Corporate Punishment President/A&R/Marketing exec Thom Hazaert, home to artists including A Killer’s Confession, Motograter, Heaven Below (featuring Patrick Kennison of Lita Ford/Union Underground), Broken Teeth, Doll Skin, Helstar, Cage9, Green Death, Arise in Chaos, former Faith No More vocalist Chuck Mosley, and many more, started out with deep ties into the Doyle camp, according to EMP’s Hazaert.

“I worked really closely with Bruce (Miyaki – Doyle’s Manager) and MONSTERMAN on (Doyle’s 2013 release) Abominator, and I was actually the marketing director out of the gate on that release. Over the years, I’ve stayed involved, and we’re all good friends, and with David (Ellefson), who also had a great relationship with DOYLE, eventually as EMP came to fruition the conversation inevitably came up about seeing if there was a fit there. With everything else going on in all of our Worlds, it took a bit of a detour to finally get here, but I can’t express how excited we are to finally be able to put this all together. The legacy of someone like DOYLE, who is SUCH a legendary talent, is always such an amazing gift when it comes to putting out records, especially for a label like EMP, where we are all HUGE, genuine music fans. And there’s really not many out there who can hold a candle to DOYLE, in terms of talent OR legacy.”

EMP President David Ellefson agrees. “I’ve always loved Doyle and we’ve had a great relationship that goes back a long time. We’d started some talk last year when Doyle and Alissa (White-Gluz) came out to do some stuff with Metal Allegiance, and it just became an ongoing conversation over the past year. Now that it’s official, we’re extremely excited to be able to not only push out this new DOYLE record, which is amazing, but all the killer MONSTERMAN titles via EMP.”

Says Doyle, “When Dave came to me with an offer for our new CD As We Die it was a no brainer. He has been a good friend of mine for 20 + years, and has never done me wrong, and in this business that’s unheard of. We didn’t want to release it ourselves on Monster Man, we wanted a bigger push and EMP has a lot of exciting things happening in 2017 that will do that for us.”

DOYLE the current project of Von Frankenstein, with CANCERSLUG vocalist Alex “Wolfman” Story, and a current lineup rounded out by bassist Brandon Strate and drummer Brandon Pertzborn, continues the lineage of Doyle’s former projects, pairing crushing metal riffs with ferocious Punk Rock swagger and the theatrical intensity one would expect from one of the reigning kings, and erstwhile creators, of Horror-Core.

In addition to the upcoming sophomore release from DOYLE, EMP/MONSTERMAN will release several limited edition vinyl configurations, as well as a CD reissue of DOYLE’s Critically-acclaimed ABOMINATOR, the upcoming LP from LA Industrial Metal mainstays DEAD GIRLS CORP., and several additional 2017 releases TBA.

DOYLE has also announced an extensive EUROPEAN TOUR in February, including several dates in the UK, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary, and more. VIP and MEET AND GREET PASSES are available for purchase at officialdoyle.com

FATES WARNING – Debut video clip for “Seven Stars” via Billboard website

FATES WARNING – Debut video clip for “Seven Stars” via Billboard website!
In promotion of their much acclaimed new album ‘Theories Of Flight’, U.S. Progressive Metal pioneers FATES WARNING are debuting their promotional video for the song “Seven Stars” via the website of Billboard today. Check out the clip, which was directed by David Brodsky for MyGoodEye / www.mgenyc.com, here:
FATES WARNING vocalist Ray Alder checked in with the following comment about the video:
“We are happy to debut the new video for “Seven Stars” from our latest album “Theories Of Flight”. This song is very special to me. The lyrics for this song were the first that I had written for the new album. I knew that my life was changing, I had met my lovely (now) wife who lived in Madrid, Spain and she was the inspiration for this song. I knew that I would be moving to Madrid soon, so the lyrics tended to come very organically. That theme would develop more as the writing progressed. Stories of change and moving on. Living life really. I found the flag of Madrid quite interesting. Seven white stars surrounded by red…Hence the inspiration for the title. I figured I would give a little tour of the city in the video since I’m now here. Enjoy!”
As previously announced, FATES WARNING will embark on a first European tour for “Theories Of Flight” in January/February 2017. Here are the dates announced so far:

ALESTORM Begin Recording New Album Sunset on the Golden Age

The next chapter in the ALESTORM tale begins! The band has just arrived at Lasse Lammert’s LSD-Studio in Lübeck, Germany, to record their 4th full-length album, which will be titled Sunset on the Golden Age.

“This is gonna blow all your expectations as to what an ALESTORM album is all about” comments Christopher Bowes (vocals/keytar). “Over the past couple of years we’ve been writing non-stop, and we’ve come up with a ton of badass material. Some of this stuff is catchiest pirate party anthems you’ve ever heard, with choruses that’ll make you want to raise a pint of rum up high and sing your guts out. And for the fans of the epic stuff, we’ve got some songs that hit the 10-minute mark, with lyrical themes about historical events and crazy mythological madness. It’s gonna rule!”

Expect more updates and drunkenness over the coming months, and a release through Napalm Records sometime in the early summer.

HEAVEN SHALL BURN launches video for “Hunters Will Be Hunted”

HEAVEN SHALL BURN launches video for “Hunters Will Be Hunted” online

Germany’s HEAVEN SHALL BURN will release their new album, VETO, on April 30th in North America via Century Media Records. In anticipation of this release, the band has now launched a new video for the album track “Hunters Will Be Hunted.” This video-clip was produced and directed by Film-M and Philipp Hirsch, who previously made the videos for HEAVEN SHALL BURN’s “Endzeit” and “Black Tears,” as well as the Bildersturm DVD and bonus DVD for Invictus. To watch “Hunters Will Be Hunted,” please click the link below:

Maik Weichert (guitars) comments about the video for “Hunters Will Be Hunted”:

“The topic of the video is very important to us. No matter if it’s hobby hunters in our regions, tourists going hunting in Africa or the ineffable whalers that Sea Shepherd are luckily setting more and more bounds to – Theodor Heuss’ (first President of the Federal Republic of Germany) words are universal: ‘Hunting is merely a cowardly circumlocution for the especially cowardly murder of fellow creatures who don’t have a chance. Hunting is a variant of human mental illness.’ The video is a bit unusual for a metal band, but we think it is a little different and standing out against the normal stereotypes of the scene. We are really proud that we could win Denise Rombouts over for the main female role. It was great fun working with such a talented and professional model. She really taught every one of us a lesion when it came down to being tough and keep on working during an ice cold winter day.”

GLOOMBALL to Release Debut Album The Distance on Steamhammer/SPV

gloomballlogokopie

The automobile and energy industries prove it on a daily basis: they swear by hybrids, in other words a homogeneous mix of different components which blend past, present and future. German newcomers GLOOMBALL apply similar parameters in terms of their artistic orientation. Their debut album is called The Distance and documents an amazing diversity of styles, influences and ingredients. “We refer to our material simply as rock music, but you could also call it alternative metal or modern rock,” guitarist Björn Daigger, who composed the majority of the tracks together with vocalist Alen Ljubic, explains, adding: “At the end of the day, our range includes elements from pop to death metal. In addition, there are classic orchestra parts as well as ultra-deep seven-string guitars. There are no stylistic taboos in GLOOMBALL.”

NECROWRETCH announces debut album, ‘Putrid Death Sorcery’

French death metal maniacs NECROWRETCH are proud to announce that the recording and mastering of their debut album has been finished. The album was recorded in late August at Blackout Multimedia studios in Brussels by Phorgath of ENTHRONED and is entitled Putrid Death Sorcery.

NECROWRETCH’s guitarist / vocalist Vlad comments: “We are extremely pleased with the way the recordings took place in Brussels as Phorgath of ENTHRONED put all his energy in this album and did everything possible to make those days in the studio a stainless experience. A first album is always a turning point in the life of a band and we were willing to push everything one step further while remaining faithful to our influences such as MERCILESS and GROTESQUE. We also wanted this album to be more personal and more varied than everything we have done in the past. All in all I think the mission is accomplished! We are now looking forward to puke on the face of the earth what NECROWRETCH has to offer on a full length album through songs such as ‘Ripping Souls Of Sinners,’ ‘Putrid Death Sorcery’ or ‘Spewed From Hell.’ Our friend Milovan Novakovic from Montenegro is now working on the cover artwork and some shirts design that will symbolize our Putrid Death Metal!”

Jerry Maréchal, A&R at Century Media Europe comments: “Witnessing the band in the studio was a truly impressive experience to say the least! It was like seeing a beast come to life and I can’t wait to see the face of people when this beast will cross their paths!”

Putrid Death Sorcery will see a worldwide release via Century Media Records in early 2013. Stay tuned for more news about this release coming soon.

NECROWRETCH live:
15.12.2012 – Detest Records farewell show – Magasin 4, Brussels, Belgium
17-19.05.2013 – Deathkult Open Air 2013 – Göllnitz, Germany

Helloween To Release New Album

Perfect timing: At dusk of the year’s most scary night, the “inventors of German melodic speed metal” have finished the video production of the first single from the upcoming album Straight Out Of Hell. The six-minute opus for “Nabataea” develops on several levels, including 3-D animation at motion picture level. The legendary kingdom Nabataea provides the atmospherically dense reference for the strong first release from Helloween’s new album that will be available beginning of 2013. Apart from the standard album with thirteen mostly fast-paced songs, there will be a limited edition featuring premium packaging and bonus tracks, including the exclusive Hammond version of the song “Burning Sun” in memory of Deep Purple’s recently deceased organ player Jon Lord. Straight Out Of Hell will be released January 22, 2013.

Do we really have to worry? Is our civilization standing right on the edge of the abyss? Is the Maya calendar actually right, predicting the end of the world on December 21, 2012? New age circles are convinced that the apocalyptic prophecy can be derived from the Mesoamerican civilization’s calendar. “Complete bullshit”, reckons Andi Deris, singer of German melodic metal band Helloween. “We will all survive the year 2012 and face an even more positive and energetic future.” Helloween have documented how this future could look like, or rather sound like, on their latest studio album Straight Out Of Hell, scheduled right after the alleged doomsday on January 22, 2013. It’s a work full of speed and toughness, with optimism and great joy of playing, featuring complex arrangements, strong hooks and plenty of catchy melodies. Or, to let the facts speak for themself: 13 mostly fast-paced songs that turn out to be impressively multi-layered and will completely delight all Helloween fans, due to the different songwriters Andi Deris, founding members Michael Weikath and Markus Großkopf, and guitarist Sascha Gerstner. Weikath: “Straight Out Of Hell is the consequent development of the two albums before. 7 Sinners was recorded more or less in the wake of Gambling With The Devil, while the new songs are a continuation of the 7 Sinners directives, only a little less doom bound and noticeably more positive. These songs will kick even the laziest listener’s ass.”

Helloween’s guitarist is referring to tracks such as “Make Fire Catch The Fly”, “Far From the Stars”, “Church Breaks Down”, the title track (written by bass player Markus Großkopf), and the straightforward “Years” – all of them racing through the terrain at full speed. In addition, there is the complex and passionate “Burning Sun” by Michael Weikath, which Deris refers to short and sweet as “one of Weik’s highspeed masterpieces” (the limited edition will feature a special Hammond version in memory of Deep Purple’s recently deceased organ player Jon Lord). “World Of War” by Sascha Gerstner convinces with thrashy guitar riffs, demonstrating Helloween’s impressive virtuosity. Deris: “What’s so special about this band, is the fact that we were always allowed to do anything we wanted, or – even if we allegedly weren’t – did it anyway. Even the at the time slightly tabooed “The Dark Ride” initially earned us negative reviews, but ended up with multiple Gold Awards. That’s the kind of freedom you feel on Straight Out Of Hell as well – we didn’t let anybody or anything put pressure on us.”

But Helloween wouldn’t be Helloween if Straight Out Of Hell would not feature the band’s other, slightly more groovy side as well. With “Waiting For The Thunder” Deris has – in his own words – contributed “a rock song reminding of the old Pink Cream 69 tunes”. Gerstner lets off steam on “Asshole” and complements the album with “Hold Me In Your Arms”, a wonderful ballad, providing the desired antithesis to the otherwise extremely energetic record. Speaking of energy: the determination that has always been an integral part of the Helloween camp was captured perfectly by their producer Charlie Bauerfeind at the band’s own MiSueno studio in Tenerife. Bauerfeind consciously created a raw sound, keeping the edge of Helloween’s new songs and working without computer-controlled devices. “With a world-class drummer like Dani Löble in the studio you don’t need click tracks or computer support”, Markus Großkopf praises his drummer. “Thanks to Dani, the whole album breathes pure authenticity, which distinguishes Straight Out Of Hell from lots of other artists’ productions. In addition, the new album sounds more compact and homogeneous than 7 Sinners has, and is one of the fastest releases in Helloween’s history.”

Also, there are significant differences in a number of topics Helloween tackle on Straight Out Of Hell. The best example of the ability to think outside the box of pure metal cliché is their first single release “Nabataea”, which Helloween’s singer wrote during a holiday. The song is about the legendary kingdom, located in today’s Middle Eastern region, where the first real democracy existed over 3000 years ago. The secret Nabataean city Petra, hidden behind a cliff scenery and only discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, is the origin of many myths and legends. Deris: “We took the liberty to tell this exciting culture’s whole story, although the song therefore lasts more than seven minutes. Truth be told, if there had been more to tell, the track would have been even longer.”

Century Media Records signs reformed Chicago death metal legends BROKEN HOPE

Century Media Records is pleased to announce the signing of reformed Chicago death metallers BROKEN HOPE.

Jeremy Wagner, BH’s founder and chief lyricist/songwriter, comments: “For years, I wanted to write a new BROKEN HOPE album and see BH firmly placed with a new home. My dream came true as BROKEN HOPE just signed a worldwide deal with Century Media. I’ve harbored great appreciation for CM and its stellar roster of artists since ’88, and I’m extremely happy and grateful to see BROKEN HOPE become part of the CM family. My sincere thanks to Robert Kampf and Maurizio Iacono for embracing our musical art. Watch for a new, sick and über-ferocious BROKEN HOPE album to hit the globe in 2013!”

Bassist Shaun Glass adds: “After taking part of an amazing North American tour that saw the rebirth of BROKEN HOPE, we are excited to be part of the mighty Century Media family. We promise to unleash one brutal and classic BH album next year!”

BH was formed in 1988 by Wagner, while he was in high school. Shortly after formation, they recorded two demo tapes and signed with indie label, Grind-Core Records. Then in 1991, they released their debut album, Swamped In Gore, launching the band out of the underground and into the mainstream. From there, the band signed to Metal Blade Records and released three more albums, all stellar examples of BH’s fury, which etched their place in death-metal history.

After BH’s last album (1999’s Grotesque Blessings) and world tours, Wagner cleaned house and put BH into “metal hibernation” in 2000. On January 20, 2010, original BH vocalist Joe Ptacek tragically committed suicide. He was only 37 years old. Before his death, Ptacek met with Wagner and Glass and discussed the resurrection of BH. With Ptacek’s death, Wagner and Glass took time off to reconsider their next moves.

In 2012, BH signed with Hard Impact Management and vowed to make BH a full-time monster– forever. Wagner and Glass recruited longtime friend and GORGASM vocalist, Damian Leski, as their new vocalist, and shortly after marked their return on the highly successful Carnival of Death tour. BH’s high-intensity COD concerts received top-praise, and confirmed BH was back, and more rabid than ever. BH is currently booked for the 2013 editions of Extremefest (Germany) and Maryland Death Fest.

BH’s first decade was filled with non-stop writing, touring, and constant visibility. The next chapter in their career will be much the same.

BROKEN HOPE 2012:
Damian Leski – Vocals
Jeremy Wagner – Guitars
Shaun Glass – Bass
Chuck Wepfer – Lead Guitars
Mike Miczek – Drums

Discography:
Swamped in Gore (1991)
The Bowels of Repugnance (1993)
Repulsive Conception (1995)
Loathing (1997)
Grotesque Blessings (1999)

David Reece Confirmed as new POWERWORLD Vocalist

Third Album Virtuality Scheduled For Release in Spring 2013

It’s been the perfect surprise: the German metal band POWERWORLD have enlisted American vocalist David Reece (Accept, Bangalore Choir) to replace Andrew ‘Mac’ McDermott, who recorded the vocal parts on their second album Human Parasite in 2010 and sadly passed away in August 2011. Rumors that interims shouter Michael Bormann, who helped out on POWERWORLD’s tour with Axel Rudi Pell, would sing on the upcoming album, have proved unfounded. Bassist Ilker Ersin: “It’s true that we briefly toyed with the idea, but for various reasons we decided not to follow it up.” Ersin is all the more happy about his new colleague, David Reece: “It’s an amazing experience for me to be working with an American instead of a European musician for the first time in my career, especially since David is an experienced vocalist. The first songs he recorded for POWERWORLD have confirmed my expectations.”

Reece, who succeeded Udo Dirkschneider on the Accept album Eat The Heat in 1989, went on to tour with Accept and then founded Bangalore Choir before releasing his celebrated solo debut Universal Language three years ago, is also looking forward to his new challenge: “POWERWORLD sound more progressive and intense than the stuff I recently worked on. I feel that my voice suits their material perfectly, and I’ll work hard on delivering my optimum performance. I’m glad to be back home, because being married to a German woman, Germany is my favorite country in Europe.”

The new album will be called Virtuality and has been scheduled for release in spring 2013. According to Ersin, it’s not a concept album but a recording which “reflects the madness in the virtual and also in the real world.” Stylistically, Virtuality is a mix of modern metal with progressive influences and classic hard rock. Reece: “We can hardly wait to introduce the new material to our fans and go on stage with them as soon as possible, particularly since we have found our ideal record company in SPV.” Along with David Reece and Ilker Ersin, POWERWORLD 2012/2013 consists of Andreas Rippelmeier (guitar), Marco Grasshoff (keyboards) and Guido Gallus (drums). ALPHA TIGER posts new video from in the studio

Germany’s ALPHA TIGER is currently hard at work on their new studio album, Beneath The Surface, which is set to be released on January 28th worldwide. With the album nearly finished, the band comments: “It took us most of June and July to record the album once again under the wings of ‘Godi’ Hildman in Berlin’s Musicflash Studio. To get a little impression about our work in the studio, check out the following studio-video:

Mixing and mastering is currently in the final stages. Andreas Hilbert, another sound wizard from Berlin’s Musicflash Studio, is about to finish things at the beginning of October.”

Megadeth and Zombie Will Continue Co-Headlining Tour

Megadeth and Rob Zombie rocked Stage AE in Pittsburgh last week and will continue to do so throughout the U.S. and Europe. MPAPPHOTO was there to capture the pure energy of the show and has joined Pittsburgh Music Magazine as a collaborator.

Metal icons MEGADETH are delivering volcanic performances and earning rave reviews on their co-headlining tour with Rob Zombie, which marks the first time the two bands have toured together. The trek kicked off Friday, May 11 in Holmdel, NJ and will include two high-profile rock festival appearances including Rock On The Range and Rocklahoma, where the tour wraps on Saturday, May 26. A list of confirmed dates is below. For additional information on purchasing tickets, visit www.megadeth.com.

Prior to the show, the New York Times proclaimed that “the speed pioneers Megadeth have the decibels to fill the grandiose PNC” and the New York Daily News said, “At last year’s faceoff with Metallica, Slayer and Anthrax, the band led by Dave Mustaine offered a set that did both their sub-genre and legacy proud (5/10/12).”

In a review of the first show, Tris McCall of the Newark, NJ Star-Ledger said, “While most of the band’s peers have either slowed down, broken up or switched to a more profitable style, Megadeth presses on, hard and fast as ever. Mustaine is a study in perseverance–and professionalism, too: He recently had to re-learn how to play guitar after suffering nerve damage in his arm. That trauma has left no mark on him–his solos, sometimes taken in harmony with sideman Chris Broderick, are as dextrous, and rapid-fire, as ever (5/13/12).” Theexaminer.com added, “The musicians ripped and shredded their way through riffs and solos with machine-like precision, yet somehow projecting an earnest passion through the notes that speaks to the raw emotion of Mustaine’s songwriting (5/13/12).”

After their tour with ROB ZOMBIE wraps at Rocklahoma, MEGADETH–singer/guitarist DAVE MUSTAINE, bassist DAVID ELLEFSON, drummer SHAWN DROVER and guitarist CHRIS BRODERICK–will head to Europe for shows in Germany, Poland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy, Czech Republic, England, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Romania, Turkey, Switzerland, Greece, Belgium, Russia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland, then in September will head to South America for concerts in Chile, Argentina and Mexico.

A newly released video for the group’s next single “Whose Life (Is It Anyway?)” can be seen now.. The video is a heavy metal tour de force, depicting youth angst turned violent, resulting in an apocalyptic finale.

The current tour comes on the heels of MEGADETH’s critically acclaimed return of the traveling festival GIGANTOUR, created and curated by frontman DAVE MUSTAINE. Rave reviews poured in for the festival, which also featured MOTÖRHEAD, VOLBEAT and LACUNA COIL. “The return of Gigantour, a nicely curated package tour of heavy metal bands, is just one more step in a great run underway by Megadeth,” wrote the Boston Globe. “It was a smart and well-paced show, one that illuminated metal’s various angles (1/31/12).”

2011 marked the release of MEGADETH’s 13th album, the appropriately titled Th1rt3en. Released November 1 on Roadrunner Records, the album debuted at #11 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock chart. The album also landed on international charts including Top 10 placements in Argentina, Finland, Korea and Japan. MEGADETH also received their tenth Grammy nomination for this project, earning a “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance” nomination for their single “Public Enemy #1.” The “Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Performance” category was, eerily, category #13.
