Off With Their Heads @ Howler’s on Dec 10th

The phrase “punk” gets thrown around a lot these days but for over a decade Off With Their Heads has eschewed trends and embodied that ethic with every ounce of their being. Having put out numerous releases and toured the country dozens of times the band are about to release Home, their best-sounding album to date which takes the group’s sound to the next level without sacrificing the palpable passion that’s made them underground favorites.
Off With Their Heads is the project of Minneapolis native Ryan Young and on Home he’s joined by drummer Justin Francis and bassist Robbie Swartwood, the latter of whom has been playing with the group for nearly five years. “It’s hard to bring people into a full-time touring punk band because you have to be a musician not someone who is doing this for a hobby,” Young admits. “An actual musician is the type of person who does this because it’s what they do. Money is always nice but you have to expect nothing and still play like you care.”
For their second release on Epitaph the band teamed up with one of Young’s heroes, Descendents’ drummer Bill Stevenson who produced the album at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado—and the result is an album that captures the raw passion of Off With Their Heads’ live shows without obscuring any of the instrumentation with a slick, studio sheen. “It was really important that this record didn’t sound too polished so once we agreed on a general sound of the record it was great,” Young explains. “It’s definitely the best-sounding record that we’ve done.”
Home is also the strongest collection of Off With Their Heads’ songs to date and certainly the most diverse. From the instantly catchy sing-alongs of “Shirts” to straight-ahead, Ramones-influenced ragers like “Seek Advise Elsewhere” and stripped-down ballads like “Don’t’ Make Me Go,” Homeshows how much the band have grown sonically since their last release, a development that is no doubt due to the fact that the band have spent so much time on the road touring with everyone from Municipal Waste to Kind Of Like Spitting in everything from massive theaters to basements.
If there’s a lyrical theme on Home, it’s personal experiences whether that ranges from struggles with identity (“I don’t feel like me, whatever that’s supposed to be” from “Shirts”) to tales from the road. However as you might expect it all comes back to the fact that for a full-time touring punk rocker the word “home” has a very unique connotation. “I think I used to take for granted the simple notion of having an apartment in Minneapolis,” Young explains. “The album is about the bad feelings associated with being at home, why people leave home, and how important it is to have a good one.”
Over the course of these twelve songs Young expresses that sentiment in different ways and the content on the disc explores everything from being oppressed because of one’s sexuality (“Focus on Your Own Family”) in addition to more personal writing that exposes Young’s own misgivings about the Catholic church and the impact it’s had on his family life (“Altar Boy”). Then there’s a song like “Don’t Make Me Go” which guest vocalist Tony Kovacs from Shot Baker summarized telling the band, “OWTH has a story and this explains a lot.” Listening to the impassioned track, it’s evident why this is true.
Having toured with everyone from Bad Religion to the Dropkick Murphys, Young has learned that in order for him to maintain his ethics he tells his bandmates that “playing a show in front of 6,000 people is no different than playing a house show” and you can tell by the group’s countless live performances that this isn’t just lip service. “I’m proud that I have pretty much maintained my core beliefs over the years,” he explains. “Opening for my heroes is cool but that’s their crowd and I have always been about carving my own part through all of this.”
Despite the fact that Off With Their Heads have performed everywhere from Jacksonville to Japan over the past decade, it’s clear that even if OWTH never left Minneapolis they would be doing the exact same thing just as passionately. “Everything involved with this band has become larger and more successful than I could have hoped for,” Young admits, citing signing to Epitaph as one of these milestones. “The only goals I have for myself and OWTH is to continue to make music that I care about, try to push myself physically and musically and continue to be able to do what I love for a living.”

About Carissa Johnson:
Carissa Johnson is addicted to playing rock and roll. The kind of sweaty, turbulent, in-your-face, post punk rock that makes uptight peopfyuuuvle squeamish and uncomfortable. Hailing from Boston MA, rock artist Carissa Johnson has proven to leave her mark and she is just getting started. With a debut full-length album winning “Album of the Year” by the Limelight Music Awards and a nomination for “Best Punk Act” by the Worcester Music Awards in 2016, Johnson continues to push ahead, writing and producing enthusiastically honest songs. With influences evident in her songs, her sound pays tribute to seventies punk and new wave, yet remains authentically her own. Johnson is known for her straight-forward lyrics and her driving, four on the floor melodies, her “heartening anthemic rock” stands out among her contemporaries. In April of 2017 she won Boston’s legendary 38th annual Rock and Roll Rumble. Determined to share her music with the world, she continues to book her own tours and play shows throughout the country – with or without a band, in support of her sophomore release, Only Roses (2016).

BUTCHER BABIES Launch Pre-Order for ‘Lilith’ (Out Oct. 27) – On Tour This Fall w/ Hollywood Undead Oct 10 @StageAE

BUTCHER BABIES LAUNCH PRE-ORDER FOR ‘LILITH’

NEW ALBUM OUT OCTOBER 27 ON CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR WITH HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD BEGINS NEXT MONTH

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
September, 8th 2017
Hollywood-based Metal outfit BUTCHER BABIES are set to release their third studio album, Lilith, on October 27th via Century Media Records. Today, the band is thrilled to announce that pre-orders for the new album are available now in both physical and digital formats. Speaking about the unique pre-order packages for Lilith, Carla Harvey (vocals) comments:
“In anticipation of ‘Lilith’, we wanted to offer unique pre-sale bundles that are special to us. Not only do we have the album, limited edition vinyl, and t-shirts up for grabs, but we are also offering limited edition items curated by myself and Heidi. One such item is a gorgeous lyric book for Lilith featuring never before seen illustrations by me and graphics by Heidi.  Another item is our signature Lilith pendant, a darling necklace handcrafted by us for our Butcher Army. You can find all the details on our pre-order site www.ButcherBabiesOfficial.com
BUTCHER BABIES – ‘Lilith’ Pre-order: http://smarturl.it/BBLilith
Fans that pre-order Lilith will also receive the album’s title track as an Instant Grat. Speaking about the first offering from their new album, Heidi Shepherd (vocals) states:
“After a year of writing and recording we are thrilled with the growth and maturity of this album. Leading with our title track ‘Lilith’, the artistic development within the band shines. We worked with producer, Steve Evetts to bring you the rawest form of Butcher Babies. No auto-tune, 100% real drums, real guitars, real bass, and an all out Butcher Babies assault on your senses. As we know in this industry, these standards are quickly replaced by machines and can eliminate what makes a band an actual band. We are so proud of the hard work and dedication that each member of our team put in to create this masterpiece.”
BUTCHER BABIES will make their much awaited return to the road in North America alongside Hollywood Undead as part of a two month run in the states. With shows already sold out in Hollywood, Des Moines, St. Louis, and Madison, WI, fans can find a complete list of dates below.

MEATWOUND: Corrosive Tampa Outfit Completes Magic Bullet Records-Bound Second LP, Largo; Trailer Video + Live Footage Posted

Magic Bullet Records confirms the impending May release of Largo, the pummeling new full-length by Tampa, Florida‘s corrosive quartet, MEATWOUND, issuing a trailer and more on the LP.
After a successful run in support of their critically-acclaimed Addio debut, MEATWOUND has returned with seven more songs of ungodly sonic devastation with Largo. While a lot of the scuzzy, surging groove of the debut album can be found intact on Largo, the band has pressed down on the accelerator a bit, resulting in faster and more violent-sounding results this time around. The aural attack has once again been captured by Dan Byers at Rock Garden Studio, just south of Largo, Florida, with mastering by Dan Randall at Mammoth Sound. As with the debut, the visuals have once again been executed by former Florida Man Chris Norris, aka Steak Mtn.
Scope the trailer previewing a bit of Largo‘s gnarled audio and more RIGHT HERE.

Several Largo tracks were recently used to assault a Florida house-show crowd; watch the entire set HERE.
Largo will be issued through Magic Bullet Records on purple vinyl LP and digital platforms; official audio samples, preorders and more will be leaked in the days ahead. MEATWOUND is currently booking tour dates in support of the album, and a video for the album’s “Pigs” is also under construction.

Digital preorders are live HERE; vinyl preorders will be released shortly.
Largo Track Listing:
1. Haunted House
2. Pigs
3. Jungle Heart
4. Reproduction Blues
5. Middle Earth
6. Mambo
7. Largo
Largo is the second LP offering from Tampa’s MEATWOUND, the outfit’s depraved cast comprised of punk/hardcore scene veterans collectively hailing from the likes of Combatwoundedveteran, Holy Mountain, Headless Dogs, Primate Research, and others. Their Addio debut took home the “Best Heavy” trophy from Creative Loafing’s 2015 Critic’s Choice Awards, and was described in Decibel Magazine‘s review as, “a bassheavy, guitar-chaotic, drum-puncturing, vocal-strained noise-rock thing of beauty. Six tracks of ’90s worship that have plucked juicy bits from all over to create a lovely smorgasbord of punk, hardcore and pigfuck: the Jesus Lizard groove in ‘I Am Transgressor’; the cement mixer riffing in ‘Meat Pack’ reminiscent of Coalesce; the feedback breakdowns that drive a lot like Jehu; and even a few spazzy interludes that show the lineage back to the No Idea roster from yesteryear.”
MEATWOUND:
Ari Barros – guitar/choke selector
Dan Shook – vocals/master race traitor
Mariano Iglesias – bass/vocals/life force swindler
Leo Suarez – drums/organ trafficking

OBITUARY BIO:

One of the most influential, revered and best-selling death metal bands of all time, OBITUARY formed in the swamplands of South Florida in 1986 after switching their name from Xecutioner.  the band signed to Roadracer Records, a now defunct division of Roadrunner, for the recording of their debut album, the immense and immeasurably heavy Slowly We Rot (1989). The album was engineered by the legendary Scott Burns at Morrisound Studio, which would come to be the most sought after facility for production of albums during the rise of death metal in the 1990s. Unlike much death metal preceding it, the album had a sludgy feel and integrated devastatingly slow passages along with obliterating overtures that reached far beyond any point of mayhem that metal had yet to reach. The result was a carnal pleasure for doom, death and thrash fans alike coupling the adrenaline of a speedball with the slow, degrading measures of a sewer at dusk. OBITUARY were unlike anything anyone had heard before and would change the shape of heavy music forever.

OBITUARY followed up Slowly We Rot with Cause of Death (1990), perhaps the band’s most hailed album and an even more chaotic, bass heavy mix of the band’s signature groove, manic guitar solos and crashing drums. The album’s defining feature, however, was vocalist John Tardy’s disarmingly horrific, gargling style, that created guttural chasms of dread which, though often mimicked, have been achieved by no one else. Drastically shifting tempos and Tardy’s unique vocal style became the band’s trademark, which clearly distinguished them from the rest of the burgeoning US death metal scene.

OBITUARY spent the next two decades releasing some of the finest death metal ever put to tape with classics like The End Complete (1992), World Demise (1994), and Frozen in Time (2005) solidifying them as one of the genre’s most important bands of all time. Fast forward to 2014, when after a five year gap between albums, OBITUARY successfully crowdfunded their new album and subsequently partnered with Relapse Records for it’s release. Reinvigorated with a new lineup featuring the additions of legendary bassist Terry Butler (Death, Massacre, Six Feet Under) and lead guitarist Ken Andrews. The result was Inked In Blood (2014) which immediately took the world by storm.  The next couple years revolved around an extensive world tour schedule that took them to sold-out venues across the globe including tours with Cannibal Corpse, Carcass and Exodus and multiple mainstage festival appearances including 7000 Tons of Metal, Maryland Deathfest, Hellfest, Obscene Extreme, Full Terror Assault, Neurotic Deathfest, Graspop Metal Meeting, and the band’s own inaugural Florida Metal Fest.

To end 2016, OBITUARY released a surprise, live EP, Ten Thousand Ways to Die, featuring two brand new songs plus twelve classics and fan favorites recorded across eleven different cities during the Inked In Blood world tour. The EP left die-hard fans craving more, unbeknownst that it was just the beginning.

Now in 2017, OBITUARY return with their self-titled, 10th studio album, further cementing their legacy as one of the most important metal bands of all time! Picking up where Inked In Blood left off, OBITUARY show no signs of slowing down as they continue to reign as Kings of death metal. Recorded at their home studio in Tampa, FL, Obituary is a 10 track tour-de-force of bone-pulverising death metal that is as heavy, uncompromising and infectious as anything they’ve released in their historic, nearly 30-year career!

OBITUARY are:
John Tardy – Vocals
Trevor Peres – Guitar
Ken Andrews Jr. – Guitar
Terry Butler – Bass
Donald Tardy – Drums

DEATH ANGEL will be touring in support of their newest full-length The Evil Divide, released earlier this Spring via Nuclear Blast Records. The Evil Divide was recorded at AudioHammer studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (Trivium, Deicide), who previously worked on 2010’sRelentless Retribution and 2013’s The Dream Calls For Blood. Mastering duties were handled by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound in New York City.

Three decades into their celebrated career, DEATH ANGEL remains as hungry as ever. As a result, uncompromising urgency and unpredictability drive The Evil Divide. The group – vocalist Mark Osegueda, lead guitarist Rob Cavestany, guitarist Ted Aguilar, drummer Will Carroll, and bassist Damien Sisson – satiate the appetite for buzzsaw speed riffs, double bass mayhem, and scorching vocals over the course of ten new anthems.

The Evil Divide stands out as the culmination of thirty-plus years of music for DEATH ANGEL. It kicked off with legendary debut, The Ultra-Violence, in 1987. The classic Frolic Through The Parkbegan to cement their legacy and even earned the distinction of landing on Loudwire’s list of the “Top Ten Thrash Albums NOT Released By The Big 4.” The group broke up following 1990’s Act III only to reunite in 2004 on Art Of Dying for the next generation.

In 2008, DEATH ANGEL teamed with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Alice In Chains, Rush, Mastodon) for Killing Season recorded at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606. In 2010, Relentless Retribution boasted a cameo from virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela, while 2013’s The Dream Calls For Blood bowed at #72 on the Billboard Top 200, selling 5,400 copies first-week and earning the group’s first-ever entry onto that respective chart.

Riff Propelled Power Trio FUZZ EVIL Release Debut Full Length

fuzzevilmastercover_smThis Fall will see the release of the debut studio full-length from Arizona’sFUZZ EVIL. Formed in Sierra Vista in 2014, FUZZ EVIL is a riff propelled power trio founded by brothers Wayne and Joseph Rudell, also of heavy desert stoners Powered Wig Machine. With two singles currently to their name – last year’s Born Of Iron and 2014’s 7” split with fellow Arizonans, Chiefs – this September sees the official release of their self-titled debut on Washington-based label Battleground Records.

Joined by newest member and fellow Powered Wig Machinist Daniel Graves on drums, FUZZ EVIL serves up a thunderous blast of rock and roll reverie indebted to the likes of MC5, The Stooges, Black Sabbath and Clutch. Recorded, mixed and mastered at Primrose Studio by Brian Gold, from the opening crunch of “Good Medicine,” which features Unida/House Of Broken Promises’ Arthur Seay, to the progressively harbingered “Black Dread,” Fuzz Evil flows like the diaries of a cosmic nomad. Swirling and psychedelically enhanced with storylines spun from the mind’s eye of vocalist Wayne Rudell and his obsession with comic books, science fiction and cult cinema. The psychedelic cover artwork was handled by Rudell’s co-owned GhostTown Graphic Art.

Fuzz Evil embarks on US West Coast Tour this October in support of the new album, which will be released on CD, LP, and digital formatsSeptember 30th.

Energy Crisis: Artizan’s New Album Doesn’t Take The Plunge

Florida’s Artizan have been going on their power/melodic metal journey for five years now, and they’ve had a good amount of time to steadily define their sound of expansive and epic tracks. Artizan’s latest metal record, Ancestral Energy, aims to continue their bout at huge, huge vocals and rhythmic riffs. But as the band steps into the murky world of prog, you can tell there a sense of uncertainty and hesitance to take that plunge. Ancestral Energy is a nervous album, where that ambitious drive to explore new ideas is padded with back-and-forth pacing, which ultimately makes the album repetitive and far too uninteresting to recommend.

Artizan singer Tom Braden’s reverence for bands like Iron Maiden is crystal clear in his voice. That power metal resonance is ascendant and packs a solid amount of endurance (the guy can nail those lengthy vocal passages with stamina to burn). However, something that has made other bands in the metal field so interesting is that shocking sense of unchained and fearless virtuosity. Braden is a fine vocalist, but Ancestral Energy doesn’t offer much credit to go on for it. He sits among a steady, but overly weathered vocal range. You won’t find any sort of screeching banshee calls in the vein of Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson or Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, nor will you find any low metal bellows like former Killswitch Engage vocalist Howard Jones. It never reaches the realm of grating, but it’s a wasted opportunity. Range is something that can prove a power metal vocalist’s chops; Artizan’s lack of any sort of left-turn surprises makes each song sound repetitive and uninteresting.

This concept continues further into the musicianship; it sounds pedestrian. Artizan don’t seem to be pushing any envelopes with Ancestral Energy. The songs themselves don’t lack a very steady structure, but the repetitive riffs, shockingly underwhelming solos and derivative rhythmic patterns tear down the album’s quality. The fact that a majority of the songs on Ancestral Energy clock in at over five minutes makes the album sound much longer than it should be. While metal tracks since the very beginning have been known for being longer than typical radio singles, when the songs themselves focus on such simplistic and repetitive setups, you can’t help but feel bored, and that’s the biggest issue with Artizan’s latest record: it’s very one-note. The tracks are drawn out and don’t take advantage of their lengthiness. If you’re going to make such long songs, you need to make them interesting all the way through. Ancestral Energy doesn’t do that and it hurts it severely.

Ancestral Energy allegedly tries to channel the spirit of progressive and power metal simultaneously, but the progressive side is incredibly under-utilized. Bands that earn the moniker of progressive metal are famous for twisted time setups, intricate note patterns and an unbridled sense of skill with their respective instruments. Artizan don’t make any sort of…well…progression with Ancestral Energy. Simply changing a time signature here or there does not a progressive song make. The title track does a better job at proving their progressive chops, with sectioned verses and, most importantly, a sense of consistent interest. The left turns throughout the album seem shoved into “Ancestral Energy,” which makes for an epic closer, but a very unbalanced overall product. (Props, however, to ex-Iced Earth singer Matt Barlow, who makes the title track’s vocal performance even better).

In juxtaposition, “You Can’t Take the Metal” is an exception to this prog-metal formula. The song’s faster pace stands out among the exhausting marathon tracks off the rest of the album, giving the song a prime state as a radio friendly track. The solos are more melodic and the rhythms are much more interesting. However, this still doesn’t excuse the rest of the album from being so bland and uninteresting.

Ancestral Energy is one of those albums that sticks to the bare bones elements of the genres it attempts to utilize. Sadly, the lack of any significant effort in the music or songwriting is something that can’t go unnoticed. It’s sad, because the ten-minute closer “Ancestral Energy” seems to be where the most effort was sent. Though it’s a great progressive metal track that also captures that power metal scope, the rest of the album is so drawn out and uninteresting that as a whole, the album can’t come with a truly confident recommendation. Artizan’s latest album comes with its own sense of confusion. In an effort to make masterful tracks like “Ancestral Energy” and even “You Can’t Take the Metal”, Artizan has padded the album with hesitant and repetitive compositions that drag down the album’s quality considerably.

Beach Day Premieres “Walking On The Streets”

Click Here To Listen To “Walking On The Streets” On FILTER

Hollywood, Florida is not your typical beach town. The buildings, diners, and of course the beach appear frozen in the 1950’s. Probably a result of the town’s population boom happening in that era, a current drive down the streets feels like your moving through an R. Crumb drawing. Things seem exaggerated and a bit odd. The now mature population seems a caricature of their former selves.

It is this strange place, lovingly dubbed Hollyweird, Florida, that the trio Beach Day calls home. Their sound is heavily influenced by their surroundings. They make new music, but it is definitely old at heart. And it’s definitely sunny, but not without some murkiness.

Kimmy, Natalie and Skyler met at a local show and quickly bonded over their love of 60’s Girl Groups, their dissatisfaction with their current musical endeavors and a common desire to be in a band that was purely about fun and making music without pretense.

Skyler was living in Asheville but missing the beach culture, so he moved back. Natalie was planning a move to the west coast but already had song ideas, so she decided to stay. The two moved into a house with Kimmy and all acquired jobs at the local Smoothie Shack. Somewhat of a big commitment for a band that just wants to have fun, but the first song they wrote together came easy. It is called Beach Day, and it is their first release out July 17th on Kanine Records (limited edition white vinyl 7” & digital download).

An embodiment of their surroundings and love of 60’s girl groups, Beach Day sounds as you might expect. Think of a female fronted Beach Boys, throw in some The Shangri-La’s, The Ventures, The Sonics, Phil Spector, The Ronettes, add in contemporaries Cults, Jacuzzi Boys, Dum Dum Girls and the Black Lips and you have a soundtrack for your perfect Beach Day.

“Singer Kimmy Drake has the true voice of a girl-group leading lady, something like a young, white Ronnie Spector raised on punk” ORLANDO WEEKLY

“[The music] may tip its hat to the past-in particular, ‘60s girl groups…but it’s hardly derivative.” ELLE

“We love a fun song about going to the beach. Now there is a whole band about it.” FOAM MAGAZINE

“A ‘60s surf band with a touch of The Ronettes and Dum Dum Girls” WILD HONEYPIE

“Take a listen to our latest Band Crush… the nostalgic trio with ‘60s surfer melodies” NYLON (BAND CRUSH)

““If The Shangri-Las and the Black Lips had a baby, the result would definitely be Beach Day. Those Beachy girl vocals you crave alongside a steady 60’s garage rock sound will make for a nostalgic and rejuvenating listening experience.” POP MONTREAL
