In Memory of Jeff Hanneman…Rest in Peace

LEFT TO RIGHT: Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King, Dave Lombardo, Tom Araya

As most of you are probably aware Jeff Hanneman of Slayer passed away Thursday of liver failure.  In January 2011  he contracted necrotizing fasciitis, thought to be caused by a spider bite, and  he has been undergoing surgeries, skin grafts and intense rehab since the fall of that year.  It is not known at this time if the cause of his death is related to the bite and his ailments.

The last time Hanneman played with Slayer was at the April 2011 “Big Four” concert in Indio, California, when he joined them onstage for a two-song encore, but he hasn’t yet been able to tour again and has been replaced on tour by Exodus guitarist Gary Holt.

Slayer released this statement:

“Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure.  He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.”

Hanneman was composer of tons of Slayer classics including two Pittsburgh Music Magazine faves, ‘Angel of Death’ and  ‘Raining Blood’.  We will miss you brother…

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS: New Quote Snippets from Kerry King and Philip Anselmo

The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists, compiled by Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is the ultimate look at the world of heavy metal via the ease and convenience of a list. No stone is left unturned here, and I mean no stone. If you think you have a list about metal that isn’t in this book, chances are you’re wrong. Both Jenkins and Abrams have exhaustively researched and brainstormed Merciless and delivered a look at their beloved genre that is informative and fun.”– Iann Robinson,

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS, written by NYC music scene veterans Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is set to be released on April 9, 2013. Touted as being “the most opinionated compendium ever written concerning Heavy Metal”, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is comprised of 208 jam-packed pages representing all that is glorious across the world of Heavy Metal. The book features dozens of never-before-seen photographs from iconic East Coast photographer Frank White.

The foreword for THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS comes from one of the most respected names in the genre, Slayer guitarist extraordinaire Kerry King, with a candid and passionate afterword from Pantera/Down frontman Philip Anselmo.

“This book will appeal to metalheads because it’s what they love. They’ll get to laugh at the industry and at themselves. Any information is good information, and metal kids want it.” –Kerry King (Slayer)

“I am an unabashed heavy metal fan, and I know as well as anyone, that metal fans can be an extremely loyal lot. But we are a very critical lot too. With each new movement, a new, defiant, outspoken, and sovereign audience is born. Music is older than all of us, so its history is ours to writhe in and absorb.” – Philip Anselmo (Pantera/Down)

There are numerous other contributions from key metal luminaries and industry personnel like:

Scott Ian (Anthrax)

Gary Holt (Exodus)

Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly)

Katon W. DePena (Hirax)

John Gallagher (Raven)

Danny Lilker (Nuclear Assault/SOD)

Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show)

Jon & Marsha Zazula (Megaforce Records)

Brian Slagel (Metal Blade Records)

Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica Producer)

ILL BILL (Heavy Metal Kings/La Coka Nostra)

MC Serch (3rd Bass)

Richard Christy (Charred Walls of the Damned/The Howard Stern Show)

Monte Conner (Roadrunner Records/Nuclear Blast Records)

Borivoj Krgin (

Shaun Glass (Soil/Dirge Within)

Betsy Weiss (Bitch)

Presented in the form of dozens of factual, random and often outrageous lists, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS dares to call many out for being the worst instead of being the best. It points out the triumphs, as well as the miserable failures concerning metal, from a diehard fan’s point-of-view.

TMBML leaves no stone unturned, often blurring the lines separating fact and hilarity. You want to know about album covers that feature goats on them? What Motorhead icon Lemmy’s warts might tell you if they could speak? The achievements Iron Maiden would never have reached had their original vocalist Paul Dianno remained in the band? Well then, this book is for you.

Victor commented on his new signature model guitar:

“I am so happy to finally have my own signature model being released! And to have it done through Schecter is an honor and a highlight in my career. We put our minds together to design an intense model that we know guitar players and collectors of all sorts are going to appreciate. I’m personally impressed with the outcome. It’s amazing!”

“To help celebrate Schecter’s dominance in new designs and innovation and quality all around, along with the release of the Tommy Victor signature model, PRONG will be supporting Exodus at the Schecter NAMM Party Saturday Jan 26th at the Grove in Anaheim. Also performing is my old friend Chris Poland and his band Ohm, and one of the world’s top shredders Jeff Loomis. The incredible Gary Holt with the rest of us will be doing a signing at the new upstairs Schecter booth at NAMM (which will have my new model on display) Friday Jan. 25 at 1pm. See you at NAMM!”

PRONG latest release Carved into Stone was released in 2012 on Long Branch Records. The album which is quintessentially PRONG, stretches into the band’s earliest and dirtiest foundations on which the band was founded on to the present as a staple of today’s post-metal and rock scenes.

Carved Into Stone can be ordered from Amazon. Be sure to check out the deluxe iTunes edition which features an exclusive bonus track which is a cover of the Rammstein track “Feuer Frei”.

Legacy of Disorder’s ‘Last Man Standing’ is Pure Metal Magic

With a siren’s wail, Legacy of Disorder opens up their latest effort, Last Man Standing. The sheer relentlessness of the first song, Thorns, tells the listener loud and clear what this experience will be about: pure metal onslaught. In the vein of Slayer, Testament, Exodus, and any number of powerful metal outfits, New Zealand now has Legacy of Disorder who are in fact creating their own legacy.

Although most of its members hail from New Zealand, fast-rising metallists Legacy of Disorder’s sound largely resembles the power metal that such renowned US bands like Pantera perfected and popularized. And as you’ll discover with their second release overall, ‘Last Man Standing’, it is only a matter of time until
Legacy of Disorder takes their rightful spot alongside the top modern day metal acts. “We think our style fits in well with today’s metal scene,” explains the group’s lead singer, James Robinson. “We have elements of a wide range of metal – all into one robust unit. Legacy of Disorder shows in a lot of ways the evolution of this genre, but with a unique sound that no one can replicate.”

With tunes such as Punish All, March to Death, Last Man Standing, Impaler, and Warrior Gene, there is no mistaking the subject matter as light listening. That is not say that LoD does not have an excellent sense of melody- but everything has its place. Legacy seem to be very concerned with ‘in your face’ metal at maximum volume. Lyrically there is no pussyfooting either. Brutal, direct, punishing, and violent the imagery created is of your favorite comic book fight scenes come to life before your eyes. Their execution of rythym to anchor their tunes while the guitars wail and crunch works extremely well, especially with some peppered in sound effects or ‘movie-like’ sound bites, thus creating a cinematic experience.

Alongside Robinson, Legacy of Disorder consists of fellow New Zealanders Rana Freilich (lead guitarist) and Jason Keill (bass), as well as Texas native Matt Thompson (drums). And there’s a reason why the lone star state provided the group with Thompson – Legacy of
Disorder has formed a tight bond with Dallas-based producer Sterling Winfield, who has worked in the past with Pantera, Damageplan, and Hellyeah. “Naturally, being fans of Pantera, we wanted to work with the same mastermind behind the scenes of such a great band,” points out Freilich. “After doing our demo here in New Zealand, we wanted the album to be the best it could, so we jumped on a plane, headed to Dallas, got stuck in with Sterling on our debut album [2008′ self-titled release] – which sounds great – and have been friends
and worked together ever since.””Sterling always keeps us on our toes, which is great in a studio environment, and draws the best out of each member – which is why we chose to work with Sterling again. This being our second album with Sterling, it felt like we were all on the same page. As a whole, there are many awesome memories – Rana’s noise gate pedal’s ridiculous battery consumption, James’
pantless antics, the bands’ ridiculous coffee consumption, and more laughs and funny stuff than you can shake a stick at. We think Sterling really got a taste of us Kiwis in our own environment!”

And as evidenced by such hard-hitting standout tracks as “Break,” “March to Death,” and the album’s title tune, the quartet is certainly starting to hit its metallic stride. “We would have to
say that we really enjoy all of the songs equally,” admits Keill. “It’s so hard to pick a favorite when you have worked on something that you have poured a lot of time and emotion into. Each song has moments that make my hair stand on end. It’s kind of like asking,’Which of your children do you like the best?'”
As one would figure from the explosiveness of their recordings thus
far, Legacy of Disorder is one ferocious live beast when they hit the stage, which Thompson confirms, when asked what can fans expect from catching the band live. “A high energy, hard-hitting precision live
set, showcasing each band member’s ability and presence, equating to a brutal live show. We look forward to setting in motion a tour for North America very soon.”

Pittsburgher’s can catch Legacy of Disorder when they play with DevilDriver and GWAR at Mr. Small’s in Millvale Nov. 26

DUBLIN DEATH PATROL To Release Long-Awaited Albums ‘Death Sentence’ and ‘DDP4Life’

DUBLIN DEATH PATROL is set to release two long-awaited albums on the Mascot Records label, 2005’s previously unreleased old-school trash metal records DDP4Life and 2011’s follow up Death Sentence, on August 14, 2012. The collaboration of longtime friends and members of the DUBLIN DEATH PATROL started in 1980, and eventually led to Testament vocalist Chuck Billy teaming up with fellow Dublin California ragers Willy Lange (Rampage, Laaz Rockit), Steve ZETRO Souza (original Testament vocalist/Exodus vocalist) and three of the Billy Brothers as well as some other local Dublin boys.

After six months of writing, arranging and restructuring new and old songs from several years of performing together, the guys went into the studio in 2005 to record the first DUBLIN DEATH PATROL album, DDP4Life, through strains and pains with Vinnie Wojno.

Steve Zetro Souza boldly claims, “This is what we have to give to the metal world, a kick ass straight up aggressive in your fucking face album of music by guys from Dublin, California. Represented by members of Testament, Legacy, Exodus, Vio-Lence, Laaz Rockit, Tesla, Heist and a group of headbanging Dubliners that deserved status.”

In 2011, DUBLIN DEATH PATROL went back into the studio with the same team to record their crushing second album, Death Sentence. In that same year, DDP played the famous Belgian metal festival ‘Graspop Metal Meeting’. Needless to say, the crowd went completely nuts.

DUBLIN DEATH PATROL is ready to crush audiences all over the world with the release of these highly-anticipated records and show what a tiny little town with an attitude profound has to offer.
