“We are thrilled to be going out on this tour with PIG and Cyanotic. The last year has been a whirlwind of emotions for us. Signing to Metropolis Records was a big win but we also lost a very good friend and producer of our first album, Matthew von Wagner.

We look forward to unleashing some of these emotions on the stage in his honour.

This is our first extended US tour so we really can’t wait to connect with fans old and new in these cities.” ~ Brett

A Primitive Evolution is:
Brett Carruthers on Vocals, Guitars and Synths
Steph Misayo Seki on Bass and Synths
Stu Dead on Drums, Percussion and Dirty Beats

Out of the primordial soup comes A Primitive Evolution (A.P.E.). Given the gift of sentience, they are here to create a constantly evolving soundtrack to our world with their dark, alternative rock music. With its current release of full length recording “Becoming” the bands next mutation is underway. Recorded at their self-built Desolation Studios in Toronto, ON the album features collaborations with Writer / Producer Ian D’Sa (Billy Talent) and Audio Engineer Kenny Luong (MetricCancer Bats). In partnership with Metropolis Records, the band and label unleashed Becoming together, worldwide on October 5th. 2018. Known to be raw and visceral, with soul and beauty: A Primitive Evolution is best consumed at extremely loud volumes!

Awarded “Best Rock Band” by the 2015 Toronto Independent Music Awards, A Primitive Evolution has toured extensively, showcased at prestigious festivals CMWNXNE & Indie Week Canada and received strong support from Canadian Music Industry stalwarts Alan Cross (CFNY 102.1 The Edgeajournalofmusicalthings.com) and George Stroumboulopoulos (MuchMusicCBC).

Pulling together a complex array of influences including Nine Inch NailsMuseThe CureToolThe ProdigyMinistryRadioheadU2VivaldiAlice in ChainsGuns N’ Roses and more, A Primitive Evolution’s rhythm-based attack blurs the lines of rock, electronica and all aspects between.

“Creation is evolution” observes A.P.E. singer Brett Carruthers, “that’s what I figure we’re trying to say with A Primitive Evolution. As evolved as we think we are as humans or animals, we are very much at the beginning of the evolution of mankind. We have so much to learn and yet so much has changed in the last hundred years. We have a long way to go as a species. We want our band to reflect that too, showing our raw emotions, doing it out of instinct and evolving naturally; not overthinking, just having some fun existing on this planet.”

Pillar Point Streams Debut LP On Hype Machine

Click Here To Stream Full ‘Pillar Point’ LP On Hype Machine

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if something about Pillar Point’s nine-song self-titled album sounds familiar. Despite being the band’s debut, the moody, melancholy electronica is the work of Scott Reitherman, who until now has been primarily known for his involvement with indie-pop outfit Throw Me the Statue. And while Reitherman’s new project shows off a never-before-seen gloom, his knack for writing tracks that crystalize emotion and work their way into a listener’s guts isn’t at all obscured.

The album, produced by Reitherman’s longtime collaborator Charlie Smith, is a musical departure for the Bay Area native. As Reitherman explains, “Part of what steered me toward the textures and beats of dance music was the feeling of catharsis you can experience through dance.” It’s a noble idea, considering the themes Reitherman’s songs are dealing with: heartbreak, loneliness, aging and isolation in an increasingly connected world.

Tracks like “Eyeballs,” a haunting, powerful ode to the solitude brought about by social networks, offer a sleek take on anguish that wouldn’t be out of place alongside early Depeche Mode; “Echoes” and “Cherry” are ethereal, evocative explorations of what Reitherman calls “that apathetic, shell-shocked feeling young people have when they’re trying to figure out what to do with their lives.” Considering the beats Reitherman has created, those young people might plan to spend the rest of their lives furiously dancing.

As the lyrical content reveals, Pillar Point is also a far more intimate project than anything Reitherman has ever embarked on. It’s no coincidence that his own heartbreaks led to the songs that make up Pillar Point. They’re bleaker than his previous work and exhibit a growth in both songwriting and orchestration.

“Writing darker songs with dance elements helped me to process the confusion and change I was experiencing in my own life because within the confines of a pop song I could control little moments of clarity and redemption,” he says. “And for the listener it adds depth to what might otherwise be just dance music.”

Born out of a two year recording process between Reitherman and Smith that stretched from Los Angeles to the Bay Area and ultimately Seattle, where Reitherman has once again settled, Pillar Point marks not only a fresh musical approach, but also a new mindset for writing songs. “One of the things I wanted to do differently,” he says, “is to lay it all out on table this time, to make my songs more bare and personal.”

The songs on Pillar Point are certainly those things, but they’re also exciting, intricate and impossible to stop listening to. There’s a heartbroken quality to them, sure, but one that seems like it might be cured if only we all close our eyes and move our feet until all is forgotten.

Ghostpoet Releases Meltdown EP Today + Shares Squarepusher MP3 Remix

Listen to the MP3 of the Squarepusher Remix of the Title Track HERE

Ghostpoet_Lo_Res_press_photo_1

Obaro Ejimiwe, AKA Ghostpoet has a voracious and wide-ranging musical appetite: he praises everything from psychedelic rock band Gentle Giant to Beth Gibbons’ bleak folk album with Rustin Man via John Coltrane along with Serge Gainsbourg, Don Cherry, Caribou and Terry Callier. It’s telling that he gravitates towards one-of-a-kind auteurs who create their own musical worlds because on his newest release, the Meltdown EP(Released Today via Play It Again Sam/[PIAS] America)the Mercury Prize-nominated Ghostpoet has done just that.

Adding electronica to that palate, Ghostpoet collaborated with the UK-based recording artist Squarepusher to create a stylish remix of the EP’s title track. “Meltdown” is the disarmingly honest tale of one of those break-ups where both parties simply drift apart. The scarring lyrics “you and me weren’t meant to be and someone somewhere knew it from the start” expertly encapsulate everyman honesty of thought, emotion, and shoulder-shrug acceptance of failed love. Listen to it courtesy of Noisey HERE and the MP3 that has just been made available HERE.

The Meltdown EP is the second release of Ghostpoet’s, following 2010’s Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam. But throughout, even when it plays second fiddle to the invention of the sounds, Ghostpoet’s lyrical voice is the compelling thread running through all of his albums.

“My lyrics are never about one specific thing, not even a particular subject matter,” Ghostpoet explains. “It’s all stream of consciousness that picks up different things at the same time. I want the listener to make up their own mind as to what the song’s about…But from the beginning I wanted to continue writing about the ups and downs of life: not just about me, but all sorts of people, known and unknown.”

“Not since Massive Attacks ‘Blue Lines’ has a heavy heart and urban dread been so absorbing” – Q
”Ghostpoet serves up his bruised, tender hat with the steely precision of a master sushi chef.” – Mojo
“That Murky world of electro clicks ticks and cosmonaut synths that Thom Yorke has been dipping into for years, Ghostpoet lives for real.” – The NME

Wolf Colony is Bridging the Gap

You have got to check out Wolf Colony.  These guys are definitely destined to be on everyone’s iPod and summer hit list pronto.  They may have started out not looking for super stardom, but destiny and fate have a funny way of intervening…

205436_197177673740602_1654476064_n

Wolf Colony is an electro-pop music duo based out of Miami and New York City. Comprising of singer-songwriter seventhleopard and music producer Neal Sarin, the duo began collaborating together in college at the University of Miami with no intention of having their music reach the masses.

After an intensive week of recording sessions in New York City, it was clear that Wolf Colony was far greater than the sum of its parts. The concoction of powerful vocals and lyrical depth complementing unique and engaging soundscapes simply could not be ignored. Check out their debut singles, “Beauty” and “Calling” now on Soundcloud and stay tuned for their upcoming album dropping this year.

Wolf Colony are beginning their quest to redefine underground electronica with the forthcoming EP project entitled Beauty. On  April 2nd electro-pop duo Wolf Colony digitally released the long-awaited singles, “Beauty” and “Calling” through iTunes and Spotify.

Entirely written and produced by members seventhleopard and Neal Sarin, Wolf Colony’s Beauty is a  unique progression of electronic pop music through the beautiful vocals of seventhleopard and Sarin’s one-of-a-kind production. The duo is focused on creating timeless music that bridges the gap between mainstream and underground electronica.

“I knew we were on to something as soon as I sent the first few instrumentals to seventhleopard. Within an hour, he sent them all back but with fully recorded verses and hooks. It was something special. We booked the first studio session that night,” says Neal Sarin.

The two singles are just an introduction to Wolf Colony’s contribution to the new era of electronica, as they plan to release a full-length LP just in time for summer.

Mixhell To Release Debut Album Spaces LP Out June 11th

“The ‘Spaces’ album and accompanying live shows are sure to elevate Mixhell into the premiere league of electronic acts.” – DJ Mag

mixhelltrio1.181049

Mixhell, an electronic collaboration between former Sepultura drummer Iggor Cavalera and DJ wife Laima Leyton, are releasing their highly anticipated debut albumJune 11th on Last Gang Records (Crystal Castles, Boys Noize, MSTRKRFT) in liaison with Boysnoize Records.

Their first single, Exit Wound, featuring vocals from Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, was released to rave reviews, being coined as a subtle but sexy track perfected by the live percussion performed by Cavalera, resulting in a tightly coiled, urgent masterpiece. DJ Mag called the track a rock and rave delight with sleazy vocals, squirrelling electronics and power-funk drums. The music video for the single premiered on Noisey, and was directed by Brazilian phenom Thiago Zanato.

The album, mixed by Gui Boratto, blends old and new, taking the best elements of both dance, electronica and rock to create a fresh and exciting sound that’s entirely Mixhell’s.  Their live performances combine live percussion and dance fusion to create an incredibly engaging, wild and exciting show. In addition, they’ve enlisted the help of constant studio collaborator Max Blum, who will add bass guitar to their already unique and intricate sets. With a few dates lined up this summer, including the legendary Glastonbury Music Festival, and a full fledged tour in the works, it doesn’t look like Mixhell shows any signs of slowing down.

Last Gang Entertainment is a recording, management and publishing company founded in 2003 with offices in Los Angeles, London and Toronto.  In addition to launching Metric, Death From Above 1979, MSTRKRFT and Crystal Castles, the label has combined successfully with LIGHTS, Chromeo, The New Pornographers, K-OS, Boys Noize and Tiga on varied licensing deals.  The distributed division (Last Gang Labels) has partnered with a variety of artist and label clients, including Nightbox, Trouble Andrew and boutique electronic label Turbo Recordings.

BEACH Unleashes “Ibuprofen” MP3 w/ Advocate’s SheWired, LP Out 7/16

Ibuprofen” MP3 Unleashed w/ Advocate’s SheWired,
In Us We Trust LP Drops July 16 via Short Story Records

Performing Live This Spring

5/17: Des Moines, IA @ Wooly’s
5/31: Buffalo, NY @ Ambush Pride Party at Cobblestone
6/8: Indianapolis, IN @ Metro Nightclub
6/29: Cleveland, OH @ Pride

BEACH‘s new full-length album, In Us We Trust is an indie-electro rock collaboration between Karen Mould–the artist formerly known as Bitch–and Billie Jo (Alligator). Fused together by electric violin & chaotic energy, the new LP represents such an important shift in sonic landscape that she was moved to name the project something that was a total departure from her former self: from Bitch to BEACH. During the making of the album, the artist left her NYC home of 15 years and went to California.   Karen describes BEACH as “a place where everything shifts”–leaving behind her old persona allowed her to write from a more expansive, playful and wild way. With no limits, like the BEACH. Sonically, In Us We Trust breathes the energy of the city; the simultaneous hope and despair, the bitter edge, humor and power of human gathering.

Album cut “Ibuprofen” is an anthemic break-up song featuring a biting rap chorus and distorted vocal layers. Download the “Ibuprofen” MP3 where it premiered with Advocate’s SheWired or HERE. You can also hear the previously released bass-driven track title track “In Us We Trust” MP3 here.

Having learned classical violin at the age of 4, Karen studied fiddling with Andrew Bird and expanded her musical experimentation horizons. She released her first solo recordMake This/Break This with legendary label Kill Rock Stars, and will release In Us We Trust produced by Roger Paul Mason July 16 on her own Short Story Records.

Previously known for her bands Bitch and Animal & Bitch and the Exciting Conclusion, Karen is also known for appearing as her former persona, Bitch, in the John Cameron Mitchell film Shortbus. She will play a handful of dates this spring and stay tuned for more details on a fall US tour coming soon!

Com Truise Remixes New Stars Track

New York-based electronic musician Com Truise has made a playful romp of synth beats from out of this galaxy on his remix of the new Stars track “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It”, which you can hear courtesy of the AV Club NOW.

And for all of those at Coachella today, head to the Main stage to check out Stars on this afternoon at 3:30 pm!

A Canadian indie pop establishment, Stars have worked together for over a decade carefully crafting music that intertwines layers containing delicate pop melodies and electronic effervescence not unlike fellow Canadians Metric and Broken Social Scene.

On their most recent album The North, all of the twelve original tracks featured significant input from all of the band members. “This is the five of us attacking each song and turning it into something that is all of ours,” says Amy Millan, who shares lead vocals with bandleader Torquil Campbell.

Rarely is one able to sum up an album with simply a phrase, a word, or even better a number. On Fatboy Slim’s most recent outing, it seems that time has come: 303. That’s right. TB-303 to be exact. This album is absolutely melting with dripping 303 lines that harken back to the golden age of Acid House music. And it is full of bangers! The squirming, squelching chirp, originating from innovative Chicago house music pioneers in the 1980’s experimenting with the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer, is so contagious and energizing that even the stiffest wallflower at the party might just have to get down and shake it.

What better time for Norman Cook aka Fatboy Slim to blow minds with such a jumping set then at a mega-gig at Brighton, UK’s Falmer Stadium. Cook said that this gig was special –  “I was involved with the fight to get Falmer built – I took a petition to Downing Street, I went on the marches – so it’s a celebration of Brighton, it’s a celebration of getting the stadium, it’s celebration of my links with the Albion, it’s the icing on the cake for all of us”. Though Cook was integral in getting Falmer built, that didn’t stop him from tearing the walls down with his schizophrenic house-rocking mixes. It’s all here – classic Slim tracks, cut, snipped, mashed, and mixed along with unheard bits and other party anthems (“Put your hands up for Detroit”,  “In The Annex”, and “Bird of Prey” to name a few).

This set is also a bit of a symbol, epitomizing  just one in a litany of amazing-sounding shows that Cook has played recently, a faintly deranged global journey stopping at all points from the Big Brother house in Brazil to the Great Wall Of China.Playing a DJ set there, he says, was “one of those boxes that needed to be ticked off”, as if everyone has a to-do list stuck to their fridge with PLAY DJ SET ON GREAT WALL OF CHINA just below GET MORE BIN BAGS and DENTIST’S APPT. “Everyone said it was like playing at an M25 rave. It was in the middle of nowhere, two hours outside of Beijing, right by the Mongolian border, in the car park of the tourist center. There’s nobody there at night. We’d had our gear impounded at customs, we were fully prepared for the idea that it might not happen. And 5000 people turned up. Projecting lasers onto the Great Wall Of China! I don’t know how we got away with it.”

He still heads into his studio to chop up other people’s tracks for use in his DJ sets, to which end, he clicks a button on his laptop and out bursts a highly improbable mash-up of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Armand Van Helden’s New York City Beat, The Incredible Bongo Band’s Apache and Prokoviev’s Peter And The Wolf, which is simultaneously brilliant, entirely ridiculous and the kind of idea that only Norman Cook would have. But at the moment, he’s concentrating on DJing rather than making records. “I did 70 gigs last year,” he says. “I’ve never done that many before. I’m just really enjoying doing the gigs, as a career. This is my job, I love doing it, I still seem to be getting away with it.”

These days, Cook’s show involves not just playing his own patented brand of “party acid house”, but a complex audio-visual production. “I’m technically a video jockey now. We write scripts for all the tunes, make films. In the past, I used to have to literally hold up the next record I was going to play to the guy who does my visuals, and he’d have to find the images to match it. And they were never synched. But now, because of the technology, no matter what speed I play at, even if I just chop quickly into it, the visuals are all synchronized. It’s a show.”

There’s more: DJing back to back with Carl Cox, unwittingly becoming FA’s “official World Cup DJ”, a forthcoming tour of “nice characterful old ballrooms in Britain”. It goes on and on: it shows no sign of stopping. “Oh no. I love it too much. I can still get away with it. It doesn’t matter that you’re old and bald and grey and fat, because you were never a sex symbol in the first place. We’re pushing new limits. No one knows what the cut-off age limit of a DJ is. And apparently, it’s not yet.” Norman Cook roars with laughter. “I take great delight in that.”

Out Premiere’s Remix Of Lone Wolf’s ‘Ghosts Of Holloway’

Listen to ‘Ghosts of Holloway’ Remix At Out Magazine

Revered as Newcastle’s very own one-man electronic dance party, Razmataz Lorry Excitement, returned at the end of 2012 with a brand new 9 track mini-album ‘If It Takes Me All Night Long’ after a 2 year hiatus touring as guitar/synth player with acclaimed Sunderland Mercury Prize shortlisted act Field Music. Here he remixes Lone Wolf’s “Ghosts of Holloway” to blistering (of on-the-souls-of-your-feet-from-dancing kind) new levels.

Lone Wolf recalls how the unlikely pair met: “When I was 16 I moved from London to Whitby on the East Coast where I had the pleasure of meeting one of my best pals to this day, Kev Dosdale. As well as being the go to guy for guitar duty in Sunderland’s finest, Field Music, he also makes awesome dance music under the moniker of ‘Razmataz Lorry Excitement’. It occurred to me that in the 15 years I have known Kev, we have never actually collaborated on anything, and so seeing as he has just released his new mini album ‘If it Takes Me All Night Long’, and I’d just released ‘The Lovers’ we felt that there was no time like the present. “He has managed to bring Ghosts of Holloway from the late 80s to the early 90s with his fist pumping remix. I love it.”

Over the last 4 years Razmataz Lorry Excitement has received national radio airplay from such Radio 1 Djs as: Huw Stephens, Zane Lowe & Annie Mac along with 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, Nemone & Tom Robinson and XFM’s John Kennedy. Video plays have also come from MTV2 and Ministry Of Sound TV. Razmataz Lorry Excitement has been mesmerizing gig-goers up and down the country with his electronic one man band performances and energetic live shows over the last 4 years, including opening up for the likes of The Klaxons, Crystal Castles, Shy Child and Errors. The Guardian newspaper summed it up best, with this review from his performance at the Reading & Leeds festival: “In a year short on surprises, the weekend’s most unlikely triumph belongs to a Geordie on the unsigned stage calling himself Razmataz Lorry Excitement. His bonkers dance beats and Prince falsetto pull a large crowd in a contest otherwise carried by Las Vegas Killers and Glasvegas.”

Introducing Christina Marie Magenta

A successful model for over ten years, Christina Marie Magenta, was always interested in making music and writing songs on her laptop. She spent over two years working on her first album, and without any progress decided to hang it up.
But, after her son decided to get into music, she felt as if it would be a bad example for her to continue to quit, and picked it back up. With that motivation behind her, she finished her first album “Burn” in less than two months. Joined by guitarist George Weidner, Magenta blends an industrial rock sound with elements of blues, folk, electronica, and goth with a very unique vocalization, a ton of ambiance, and a touch of attitude.

“Halo 4” OST Sets Record As Highest-Charting Video Game Soundtrack Ever

Microsoft and 343 Industries in conjunction with new soundtrack partner 7Hz Productions, today announced the “Halo 4” Original Soundtrack (OST) produced by composer Neil Davidge of Massive Attack fame is now available online and in stores. The “Halo 4” Original Soundtrack, featuring 15 tracks and over 75 minutes of unique music, marks the first time a new composer has taken the reins for the iconic series’ musical score since the launch of the original “Halo” game more than a decade ago.

The “Halo 4” individually numbered and limited Special Edition 2-Disc Box Set consists of the “Halo 4” Remix Album, produced by Davidge in tandem with fourteen of the world’s most renowned electronica producers and artists, including DJ Skee, Sander Van Doorn, Gui Boratto, Caspa, Apocalyptica, Hundred Waters, and more. A first for the “Halo” franchise, the landmark remix project is a premier example of a video game drawing from the breadth and caliber of talent in the electronica music world, breaking new ground for the blockbuster franchise that has sold over 43 million game copies worldwide and generated nearly $3 billion in revenue.

“It was an honor to compose and produce the ‘Halo 4’ score,” said Davidge. “I am so proud of the way the OST has turned out and to have had the opportunity to evolve the great legacy of ‘Halo’ music. To be able to then collaborate with these talented DJ’s and musicians on various remixes was a real bonus as it is always fun and interesting to see how others interpret and reimagine what you have created.”

Pushing the musical envelope, Davidge and his production company enlisted popular electronica producers DJ Skee, Caspa, Sander Van Doorn & Julian Jordan, Gui Boratto, KOAN Sound, Matt Lange, Andrew Bayer, Norin & Rad, Alvin Risk, Bobby Tank, Maor Levi and Hundred Waters, in addition to rock maestros Apocalyptica and ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, to create a 14-track remix disk based on the Original Soundtrack (samples available on Halo Waypoint). When approached to work with Davidge, these artists not only took his work on the “Halo 4” score and shaped it into their own unique sound, but kept true to the roots and feel of the “Halo” franchise.

“I have been a fan of ‘Halo’ since day one, and when I heard Neil’s epic compositions for ‘Halo 4’ I was blown away,” said DJ Skee. “When we got the opportunity to remix and add our style, I wanted to create something just as epic that could stand alongside both the original composition and ‘Halo 4’ itself.”

Devereaux’s “NYXT” Video is Creepy Sexy

Part creepy, part erotica, part WTF: In the corner of an intersection in Columbia, SC where the debris from a car wreck between Kraftwerk, Trans Am, Battles, Air, and Daft Punk is partially scattered, you can find the sound of Devereaux. Not quite analog, yet not exactly electronic- Devereaux is a hybrid, born of a traditional studio recording approach whose aim is an airtight aural aesthetic. Devereaux relies entirely on original loops, patterns, vocals and beats that are primarily conceived from a live execution, Devereaux expertly layering wild colors to create a sinewy pulse that is as much machine as it is human.
W. Heyward Sims (who performs as Devereaux), grew up perfecting Led Zeppelin riffs in front of his Emerson CD player in the early 90s, and now laments the demise of the answering machine. He gets the horror movie style dance party started in the new video “NYXT,” where a bunch of scantily clad ladies dance around a balloon-filled room to what has been described by some as a “Daft Punk by way of South Carolina” tune.
Cacti Pace, Devereaux’s first EP, is the daughter of Sims’s own pre-Google and post-Google reconciliation.

Bear In Heaven, an unforgettable band known for their effortless glimmering, warm electronica, is coming to Brillobox on October 28th for a night of electronic euphoria.

Renowned for mastering a unique combination of driving synthesizers and whirling electronica with intoxicating vocals, the band makes one hell of a live show. The Boston Globe described a recent performance: “The band created an impromptu dance club setting, with an extraordinarily visceral onslaught of pounding kick drums and distorted bass lines that had much of the room, and frontman Jon Philpot in particular, dancing in earnest.”

Check out their latest release I LOVE YOU, IT’S COOL

“New York trio Bear In Heaven turns its synthesizers into a full orchestra. Leader Jon Philpot uses his voice as an instrument, opting for patterns over melodies, and guitars recall the Cure while reaching for the stars.” LA Times
