Nahko and Medicine for the People frontman, Nahko: MY NAME IS BEAR TOUR

BY JAMIE LOVE

Nahko and Medicine for the People frontman, Nahko, released his first solo and very personal album, on October 20th, titled,  My Name Is Bear. To support it, he announced an expansive United States and European tour. On October 24th, Nahko, backed by his Medicine Tribe and childhood teddy named Britches, graced the stage of Mr. Smalls Theater in Pittsburgh and sent the audience on a journey through the earlier years of his songwriting and self-discovery. “So many dear people helped me to write and live these stories…The two summers I spent in Alaska, half the winter in Louisiana and the other half holed in my van in Portland, and then the first year in Hawaii was transformational and pivotal to shaping me into who I am today. Those 3 years before I met my mother would offer a reclaiming of my name, finding a new faith and fever for my own spiritual connection to Creator, and discovering first love. These were just a few of the important discoveries for a young cub set on exploring the world and finding himself amongst the wild.”

Opening acts included songstress Christina Holmes and Spanish Soul Indie Rock group 1,000 Fuegos. My Name Is Bear is Nahko’s second major release only one year prior, in 2016, Nahko and Medicine for the People dropped their third studio album, HOKA via SideOneDummy Records. HOKA, hit number 72 on the Billboard 200 upon it’s released and was awarded “Record of the Year” by the Native American Music Association.

R&B and reggae crooner Sammy Johnson will be performing in Pittsburgh, PA on Friday, October 20th! Australian native, New Zealand-bred soulful reggae star Sammy Johnson will bring his positive-centric brand of entertainment back to the United States this fall with the announcement of the Mixed Feelings Tour. Sammy Johnson collides his Polynesian roots with his love for modern jazz and r&b artists like D’Angelo, Amy Winehouse, and Lauryn Hill, which results in a passionate musical hybrid that is undeniably soothing.

Show Details:
When: Friday, October 20th
Where: Rex Theatre
Time: 7:00 PM
Price: $20-$23
Sammy Johnson has remained busy releasing a constant influx of music since his breakthrough self-titled 2014 EP, which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Reggae Charts. He has since seen an organic growth as a result of his hard work and dedication to his craft. Since his debut, Sammy Johnson has since enjoyed multiple sold-out performances and large festival appearances. Accompanying the soulful vocalist are musicians Gabriel Miller (guitar), Samuel Ikeda (bass), and Elias English (drums.)
The upcoming Mixed Feelings Tour will take the music of Sammy Johnson into unchartered waters, visiting never-before visited cities and bringing his music to eager audiences. With new music waiting in the wings, even the most diehard fans will enjoy a new experience. Sammy’s goal for this tour is to make each stop a unique and interactive experience, reacting to the given energies rather than forcing uninspiring by-the-script performances so many touring bands fall victim to. Speaking on this sentiment, Sammy stated “When fans come to my show, I want them to really feel like they’re a part of it.“
With new music scheduled to drop later this month, including a collaboration with tourmate Anuhea, Sammy Johnson is finding his way onto the radars of many. Be on the lookout for Sammy’s new EP, coming out on Island Empire Records in the near future, and be sure not to miss Sammy’s first East Coast tour!

The Thrival Innovation + Music Festival celebrates its fifth year by elevating
both its music and innovation elements to new heights.
On September 27-28, Thrival Innovation tackles Pittsburgh’s emergence as a hub for artificial intelligence and
automation (think: driveless cars and more) with its theme “Intelligence: Humans X Tech” — featuring 50+
speakers and a dozen custom programs, welcoming experts from around the U.S., representing Fortune 500s,
tech giants, startups, and more.
Thrival’s two-day outdoor live music experience once again brings a distinctive blend of 19 national and local
artists to unorthodox ‘venues.” Thrival Music headliners include Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Carnage, GRiZ, Two Door
Cinema Club and over a dozen more acts to perform at the historic Carrie Furnaces on September 29-30.
Two-day and single-day general admission and VIP festival passes are on sale now at thrivalfestival.com.
Grammy-nominated recording artist, Wiz Khalifa, will make his only 2017 hometown appearance in Pittsburgh
after an extensive festival run across the country and through parts of Europe.
Stepping outside of the music realm, Wiz Khalifa will also step into the entrepreneurial spotlight, speaking
alongside other keynote participants at Thrival Innovation’s marquee event at the Carnegie Museum of Art on
Thursday, September 28.
Right on the heels of Pennsylvania’s legalization of medical marijuana, Wiz Khalifa will share the stage with
Marc Ruxin, CEO of Landseye – Privateer, and John Battelle, founding editor of WIRED Magazine to discuss
“High Road” — a talk on the economy and culture of marijuana, as well as the Taylor Gang’s entrepreneurial
ventures.
“Virtually everyone is familiar with Wiz Khalifa the artist, but both Wiz and the Taylor Gang are entrepreneurs
building successful and dynamic ventures outside of music. Their voice is important to not just promote our
innovation economy, but to demonstrate major success stories coming out of Pittsburgh and the Rust Belt,”
says Dan Law, director of Thrival and Vice President of Business Development at Ascender.
Tickets for the Thrival-Carnegie Museum of Art event are only $15 and on sale at
thrivalfestival.com.
Following Thrival Innovation, Thrival Music kicks off Friday, Sept 29 with headliner Logic who’s “1-800-273-
8255” scored #1 song in the country just last week with the moving lyrics and awareness of the suicide
prevention network. Watch Logic’s MTV VMA performance from earlier this month that captivated audiences
across America.

Gearing up for Thrival Innovation + Music Festival headliner Wiz Khalifa will take the field at PNC Park on
Wednesday, Sept 27 to throw the first pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates last home game of the season vs
Baltimore Orioles. Game time is set for 7:05pm tickets can be purchased here.

JACK JOHNSON’S ALBUM ‘ALL THE LIGHT ABOVE IT TOO,’ AVAILABLE NOW

Multi-platinum recording artist Jack Johnson has released his 7th studio album, All The Light Above It Too, today through Johnson’s own Brushfire Records label & Republic Records. Fans are able to purchase the album through all music retailers, all online platforms including www.jackjohnsonmusic.com/store. In celebration of the release, Johnson will perform the first single, “My Mind Is For Sale” as well as “Big Sur” tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Check out All The Light Above It Too Here!

The new album is Johnson’s first since 2013. “This album shares what has been on my mind during the past year or so,” says Johnson. “A year in which I sailed through the North Atlantic Gyre for a documentary about plastic pollution in the ocean. A year in which Trump was elected as the President of the United States. A year in which I camped, surfed, got stitches, explored, dreamed, shared time and endless conversations with my family and friends…all of which inspired these songs. I usually make sketches of the songs first then set up a time to actually record the album. This time around the original sketches became the final versions. I didn’t want to lose any of the spirit that a song has in its rawest form.” To finish out the record Johnson called upon producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), along with his longtime band mates to play on a few of the tracks.

Johnson will return to the road for fall tour dates, following a successful sold-out summer tour. Tour stops include the Southeastern US, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand. Fall dates kick off September 27th in Virginia Beach, VA. Complete list of tour dates below. In conjunction with the upcoming tour of the Southeastern US, Johnson will be directing funds to relief efforts in the impacted areas from the recent Hurricanes.

Brushfire Records not only gave them the opportunity to release music from their surf films but to release Jack’s music as well as connect and support other musicians, artists and friends who’s work they liked and respected. In its fourteen years, Brushfire has since moved to Los Angeles where they have custom-built their own solar powered studio, The Solar Powered Plastic Plant, while continuing to release new music and films.

And Billboard writes:  “His playing blows all over the map…gutbucket blues, joyous gospel, Rolling Stones-style rock crunch, and aching R&B. Walker’s guitar playing is fine and fierce.”

Rusted Root Back in the ‘Burg June 23rd! FREE SHOW!!!

by Ed Thompson, Pittsburgh Music Magazine

The Root faithful in Pittsburgh have barely had a chance to settle down from Rusted Roots visit back home in April to Jergel’s Rhythm Grille in Warrendale PA. Michael Glabicki and the band left the sold out crowd begging for more.  But, relax, your prayers to the Root God’s have been answered.  Rusted Root fans will get a chance to see their hometown favorites just two months later when they will kick off Station Square’s “Summer Jamz 17” schedule of FREE concerts this Friday June 23rd.  Rusted Root will be supported by an opening act named “The Wailer’s” to warm up the crowd. The Wailers will take the stage at 7pm with Michael Glabicki and his bandmates hitting the stage around 830pm.

Earlier this spring and even more recently on their sporadic tour, Glabicki and the band have been giving the fans between 12-16 songs depending upon the time and venue. More recently, they have run through all their hits like “Welcome To My Party” which appears to have been the bands choice and fan favorite for the opening song throughout the spring and early summer. In addition, Lost In a Crowd, Back to Earth and Man, Not Machine have been the meat of their shows. The obvious fan favorites and hits “Ecstasy, “Voodoo” and the incredibly successful “Send Me On My Way” have been set closers or encores.

As you may remember, “Ecstasy” and “Send Me On My Way” were two of Rusted Roots early hits from 1995. This song began the Root verbiage of “oombayseeyou” and “seemoobadeeyah” which have since been sung by the crowds   just about every night since when Rusted Root provides the music. “Send Me On Your  Way” was records in 1994 and released on the “When I Woke” album.

Rusted Root wil take the stage Friday at Pittsburgh’s Station Square around 830pm to kick off the Summer Jamz 17 concert schedule.. If you missed the April show at Jergal’s, Glabicki and the band will probably forgive you.  But if you miss this one, I’m not so sure.

CONCERT REVIEW: FOZZY @DIESEL PITTSBURGH

WORDS AND PIX: ED THOMPSON

The anticipation of seeing FOZZY lead by WWE star Chris “Y2J” Jericho was met with both anticipation and reservation.  The anticipation was that I have always enjoyed Chris’ work both In and out of the ring since the 90’s.  He’s truly a great performer. The reservation was that all the YouTube video’s that are out there show Chris Jericho’s voice as being a little rough and not ready for a big tour like FOZZY was starting. I do have to say, I had no doubt that Jericho would be a great performer on the mic and would keep the audience at Diesel in the palm of his hand. I just wanted to and I was proved wrong about his voice. And boy, was I.

FOZZY lead by Jericho came out strong and never dropped the tempo a bit. FOZZY and Jericho ran though over 20 plus of their hits and kept the crowd wanting more all through their encore.

FOZZY came out with their opener “Judas” which appears to be their choice in every city. Jericho came out and again, kept the crowd in the palm of his hand all night long. They ran right through “Sin and Bones”, “Tonight” and “To Kill a Stranger” before Jericho took a break and thanked the crowd for coming out to the show. The crowd at Diesel was obviously happy to be there.  They kept Jericho from talking on the mic for almost 3 minutes with just constant cheering for Jericho and the band. Once the standing ovation was complete, Jericho thanked the crowd in Pittsburgh told them they were in for a great show. And he was right.

FOZZY led right into the heart of their set with “One Crazed Anarchist”, Inside My Head” and “Eat The Rich” (a Krokus cover).  Jericho’s voice was perfect tonight. Is was crisp and clear and strong from start to finish.  The supporting band members were all great musicians. None missed a beat. Actually, some added a beat here and there. The only thing that I notice is that Jericho was the prized diamond. He was the center if attention the entire concert. From start to finish, Jericho was in the limelight. I always like to see the limelight spread amongst the entire band. Frank Fontsere on the drums was great and deserved some of the spotlight. He was beat for beat all night long. Richie Ward on lead guitar was incredible. He definitely supported the rest of FOZZY and kept Jericho going all night long. Paul Di Leo on the bass was also great and kept the beat thumping all night long. His bass solo made some jaw drops in the crowd from what I saw. I know mine did. All in all, the combination of these guys added up to be a great lineup. The one I think that will make some noise across the music scene this summer.

The rest of the night included some strong songs which did showcase each and every member a little bit but mostly Jericho’s talents on the mic. “Sandpaper”, “With The Fire”, “God Pounds His Nails” and “Spider In The Mouth” led into the second half of the setlist and remained strong. Jericho’s voice never broke. It remained top notch all night long. ABBA’s “S.O.S” ran into the end of the set list. Accompanied by “Do You Want To Start A War”, “Lights Go Out”, “Bad Tattoo” end the night and led into the encore “Enemy” which was an incredible song to end the night. Without a doubt, it left the Pittsburgh wanting more and already wishing for a future tour date in the city.

All in all, it was a great show. No doubt it was meant to showcase Jericho and his voice to put him out on the music as a prominent “front man”. Which in my opinion he did tonight. Chris had the qualities of a David Lead Roth and great and strong vocals to go with it. Will it continue, is purely up to Chris. I personally would have loved to see each member showcased a little more during the set list. I personally am looking forward to the next FOZZY show here in Pittsburgh.

HOLMDEL, NJ | JANUARY 24, 2017: As New Jersey rock outfit Youth in Revolt gears up for their highly anticipated debut full-length, The Broken, to be released on February 17, 2017 with Outerloop Records, fans everywhere have been flooding social media, asking when they will be able to see the new lineup in full fruition. Today, the band has answered that call, as they announce a two-week tour kicking off the weekend of the album’s release. The tour will kick off on February 18, 2017 in Worcester, MA at The Raven and wind its way through the midwest hitting Chicago and St. Louis before heading south ending in Nashville and Newport, KY on March 3, 2017 at the Thompson House.
Youth in Revolt is a five-piece rock band hailing from New Jersey with musical similarities to bands such as  Sleeping With Sirens and Of Mice and Men. With sinister riffs, heavy breakdowns, and an array of catchy choruses, Youth In Revolt’s sound is nothing to be considered forgettable. After adding former Brightwell members Tanner Allen (vocals) and Arvin Sarathy (drums) to an impressive lineup with original members Kenny Torres (Vocals, Bass), Alex Ramos (Guitar), and Chris Coletti (Guitar), Youth in Revolt are in their biggest year yet. The band released the first piece of music with the new lineup, a cover of Ellie Goulding’s “Something in the Way You Move“on September 21st, to great acclaim. The band most notably broke into the scene touring alongside acts such as Capture the Crown, Ice Nine Kills, Palisades, and more. Following the debut of their cover of Lorde’s popular track, “Royals,” featured on Pop Goes Punk Vol. 6 and touring the Vans Warped Tour supporting their EP Love is a Liar’s Game in 2015, Youth in Revolt have gained a dedicated following that has highly anticipated the band’s next move.

Pre-orders are available here and fans will be treated to an instant download of “The Broken,” “Not Giving Up,” and “Don’t Wait for Me.” Visit Outerloop.Group for more information.

THE GREAT COLLAPSE DUE MARCH 17, 2017

January 30, 2017 — FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY have debuted a brand new music video for their newest track “Heads Will Hang” today exclusively via Alternative Press. Directed by Max Moore,(CODE ORANGE, OF MICE AND MEN) this is the first music video the band has released from their upcoming new release. Founding guitarist / producer Will Putney comments, “The concept behind the song/video was to set a scenario in America where a normal happy family was placed in a similar extreme situation, in the hope that it creates a certain feeling of empathy for what less fortunate nations are experiencing right now. And to shed some light on just how close we are to the same tragedies hitting our homes.”

“People in the United States always seems to form these really strong opinions about war, refugees, and other crisis situations in third world nations without really having the perspective of what’s actually happening there,” says Putney. “Everyone’s guilty of it to some extent; a lot of us live very privileged lives in comparison to other pockets of the world, where the basic comforts like clean water, power, shelter, and safety are not guaranteed.”

Fit For An Autopsy will release The Great Collapse on March 17, 2017 via Entertainment One (eOne) / Good Fight Music in North America and SPV overseas. Artist Adam Burke was tapped to create the visually stunning cover art seen below.

The Great Collapse will be the the band’s fourth full length record, continuing the momentum gained from a solid 200+ days of worldwide touring backing the buzz-worthy release of Absolute Hope Absolute Hell in late 2015, as well The Depression Sessions, a split release with The Acacia Strain and Thy Art Is Murder in 2016. Putney adds, “It’s going to be the strongest record in our catalog. The overall mood and atmosphere of this album feels fully realized and emotionally stirring.”

The crushing music of Fit For An Autopsy is for any fan of extreme metal, as it’s devoid of preachy politics or grandstanding soapboxing, but its sound and fury is absolutely unflinching in purpose. The band expertly blends excessive-force fueled death metal with atmospheric groove and impassioned personal diatribes, reflecting back the dark state of current events. Their fourth album, The Great Collapse, doesn’t waste time with fantasy bullshit or cliché gore horror. Fit For An Autopsy are metal guys, to be certain, but they grew up in the hardcore scene. They embrace the responsibility to put as much devoted purpose into their lyrics and message as they do into their dense, heady, songs, forging a magnificently powerful new post-deathcore.

“When I write a song, I’m trying to feel emotionally connected to it. I really don’t like saying things that don’t matter over music that I want to matter,” says Putney, guitarist, principal songwriter and cofounder. “We’ve always addressed serious topics going back to our first album. We aren’t a politically charged band up on a podium yelling at people – anybody can relate to the aggression, anger, frustration, and sadness often communicated in our music. But we absolutely raise important questions in the lyrics. Those themes are there to discover.”

Putney’s fellow guitarist/cofounder, Patrick Sheridan, strongly agrees. He emphasizes that while the music of Fit For An Autopsy may evolve it will always be aggressive and will always have purpose. “We think it’s important to carry that torch. Somebody’s got to say something about the shit that’s going on. If you’re not using your music, which is a great platform, for something meaningful that you care about on some level, then you’re kind of wasting it.”

The six-men of the New Jersey based group – which includes vocalist Joe Badolato, bassist Peter Spinazola, third guitarist Tim Howley, and drummer Josean Orta – put maximum intentionality into everything they do. They are constantly challenging themselves as musicians, adding to the band’s overall creative arsenal, connecting with audiences around the world, and supporting one another in the band as individual people.

Fit For An Autopsy is set to take part in the CARRY THE FLAME TOUR featuring AFTER THE BURIAL, EMMURE and FIT FOR A KING this spring.

GRIDFAILURE: Video For “Paranoia Will Not Coagulate” Released; Preorders For Split With NEVER PRESENCE FOREVER Posted

unnamed-4GRIDFAILURE has completed and released the project’s first video, created for the track “Paranoia Will Not Coagulate.” The soloist also confirms several new recordings to see release over the coming months.
“Paranoia Will Not Coagulate.” comes from the debut GRIDFAILURE album Ensuring The Bloodline Ends Here, which was released in May 2016 through The Compound Recs. The outfit has since recorded and completed several other new titles, yet returns to the debut album for a series of videos beginning here. Captured in various sectors of New York and Pennsylvania over the Summer, the visual stimulant for the song was solely filmed and edited by the outfit’s lone creator, as with the others in the series, which are currently under construction.
See GRIDFAILURE’s video for “Paranoia Will Not Coagulate” at THIS LOCATION.
The Halloween-released Further Layers Of Societal Collapse EP is available for free download HERE, and the limited split cassette with NEVER PRESENCE FOREVER — due out on December 23rd — is available for streaming and preorder via NEVER PRESENCE FOREVER HERE and GRIDFAILUREHERE.
The works of GRIDFAILURE are the haunted experimentations of David Brenner (ex-Theologian, ex-Heidnik). The soloist has been collaborating with a wide cast of henchpersons across the country and beyond over the past several months, and is currently finishing up the final recordings for the cannibalistic post-Sixth Mass Extinction dementia of impending second album, Teeth Collection, for release in early 2017. Also, heavily underway is the construction of Drought Stick, which has somehow transformed from an investigational EP into an epic collection which explores more spacious, echoing movements fit for somnambulant wasteland deviations. Drought Stick will see 2017 release as a double conceptual album.
GRIDFAILURE has also rapidly completed most of a new EP, Hostile Alchemy, which will see release ahead of both Teeth Collection and Drought Stick in January 2017. Stand by for audio from the new EP in the coming days.

Bon Jovi and President Bill Clinton “Get Out The Vote” in Pittsburgh

Photos and story: Jack Fordyce ©2016

Jon Bon Jovi got a little help from his friend when President Bill Clinton made a guest appearance during a free “Get Out The Vote” concert in Pittsburgh Thursday night at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. There wasn’t a duet, but they each took a moment to address campaign issues in support of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. The Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter played a short setlist starting with “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “Lost Highway,” and an acoustic cover of The Beatle’s “Here Comes the Sun.” The Clinton campaign is having Bon Jovi perform at another similar event in Tampa, Florida on Nov. 5, the day after the release of their thirteenth studio album, “This House is Not For Sale.”

Bassist Jessica Kion and drummer Gavin Wallace-Ailsworth contribute deep grooves, full of unexpected accents and ornamentation that glue the boundary-pushing work together. Marianas Trench: Memorable in Millvale

Stephanie Connell: story and photos

It’s a quiet night in Millvale, just like any other night.  Cars happily bustle up and down the narrow streets, and a line forms outside Mr. Small’s Theatre and Funhouse.  Teens and young adults alike eagerly wait for the doors to open.  Around 7 pm the venue welcomes its guests inside the former church to enjoy a sanctuary of a different kind: music.  A DJ opened the show with a series of classic 1980s jams, such as “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi and Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline.”  At 8pm, Greensburg’s own Vertigo continued on with its pop-rock funk styles, followed by Skylar Stecker who is on the full tour.  Not long after she finished, the lights dimmed and the crowd roared.  Four musicians take the stage, the lead singer Jedi-style (slowly, hood-up).  During the opening song, Astoria.  The hood is removed to reveal Marianas Trench’s Josh Ramsay.  The first few songs end with Ramsay very happily exclaiming “I told you we would be back soon!”  Ramsay then happily discussed the excitement of the band touring for close to a full year since the beginning of the first Astoria tour. The Canadian pop-punk band played hits such as “Fallout” and “Cross My Heart” as well as hits from Astoria such as “Who Do You Love”.  The band revealed that upon the tour’s end, they would be making a music video for the latter.  They ended the show with the statement “We will back soon!”  Hopefully, we can count on this.

Overall, the band puts on a memorable show.  The theatrics at the beginning of their set create an atmosphere that live music fan can enjoy.  Their crowd interaction only makes it better.  The band saw some familiar faces in the crowd, including a fan who strongly resembles Dean Back of Theory of a Deadman.  “I know we talked about this the last time we came here!” Ramsay exclaimed to the crowd.  Apparently, their concerts in Millvale are just as memorable for the band as they are for the fans.  This was only the band’s second trip to Millvale.  Hopefully, they do not think twice about returning a third time.
