Devin Townsend just successfully completed a North American trek with GOJIRA and THE ATLAS MOTH in support of DTP’s critically acclaimed Epicloud, which features the hit single, “Lucky Animals”

Named one of the best metal albums of 2012 by Decibel Magazine, Metal Sucks.net, and countless others, Epicloud can be purchased at iTunes or CM Distro. Read on for a few reviews of the album:

“…you have to buy this album.” — FOX NEWS (RED EYE)

“‘Epicloud’ is huge…Devin Townsend is to music as what Michelangelo was to painting and sculpting.” — ABSOLUTE PUNK.net

“…an exhilarating amalgam of show tunes, metal, gospel, techno, prog, pop, rock and musical genres that only exist in Townsend’s head.” — DECIBEL MAGAZINE

“Devin Townsend continues to excel at being one of the noteworthy prolific musicians in metal today with the excellent ‘Epicloud’.” — LAMBGOAT.com

“Devin Townsend’s new album, ‘Epicloud,’ is incredible; it might be Devy’s White Album…It melds a whole lot of different styles into a series of dangerously catchy tunes; a whole lot of the album isn’t metal, but every second of it of is great, and yes, most certainly EPIC.” — METAL SUCKS.net

“…a bombastic and catchy record, filled to the brim with some of the best pop metal you will ever find…’Epicloud’ is without a doubt the strongest collection of songs on any Townsend record to date.” — HEAVY BLOG IS HEAVY.com

“Although he’s known world-wide for his heavy riffing, there has always been a lot more than just that going on in his music. Listening to ‘Epicloud’s opening tune ‘True North’ you get classical choruses, power-metal layering, Scandinavian folk and frightfully meaty sludge metal slashing.” — VANCOUVER PROVINCE

Gojira and Devin Townsend SELL OUT Mr.Smalls, Pittsburgh PA

Since the cancellation of the 2012 North American summer tour dates with Lamb of God and Deathklok, Gojira finally made their way back to Pittsburgh at Mr. Smalls in Millvale. The voyage of the French Death Metal quartet had been much anticipated by fans from all over. Vans and buses with out of state license plates halted to a stop near the venue mid-day, and metal-heads alike sifted through the doors like a clown car. The energy and camaraderie was thick in the teasing spring air and sun, as an omen that this was going to be an experience of a life-time for all.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing Devin Townsend himself for the second time, hours before the doors opened. As myself and Chief of Operations Alan Welding walk into his dressing room backstage of the venue, we are greeted by the pleasant echo of Townsend ripping through a new amp head. After Townsend energetically and genuinely asked us how were both doing, we jumped right into our extensively interesting interview.

After meeting with Townsend, who is unbelievably down to earth and intelligent, we ran into a few other down to earth dudes, to say the least. Catching up with Gojira themselves, Joe Duplantier on vocals and rhythm guitar, and Jean-Michel Labadie on bass was another incredible highlight. The guys chatted with us for a few minutes, asking if I was sick since they could hear it in my voice, and disclosing that they too, were also feeling under the weather. As a fan (and when I say fan, I mean A HUGE FAN), you never really know what you’re going to get when you meet your most revered musicians. ALL of Gojira’s discography plays on my iPod constantly, and “The Way of all Flesh” NEVER makes its way out of my car. Joe and Jean-Michel were extremely friendly and confirmed my admiration for their music, and the embodiment of the positive image they portray to their fans all over the world.

Hours later, the Atlas Moth, an American Post-Metal band from Chicago, warmed the stage with an impressive tone for The Devin Townsend Project, and Gojira. Townsend followed, surprising the hell out of me with his gritty performance. Behind closed doors this guy is a total gentleman and overall extremely intelligent goofball. On stage he is a total ‘effing rockstar. Switching out numerous guitars after nearly every song and flipping pedals left and right, this guy and his band members absolutely blew me away with their huge sound. Townsend’s ludicrous stage presence made him all the more charming and ominous, and his Rocky-Horror style really appealed not only to me as a new fan, but to the rest of his loyal followers.

The finality was the entrance of the ultimate rockstars themselves. Gojira besieged with “Explosia,” and an energy and aura that I’ve only ever dreamed of experiencing with a live performance. Something is so very different about Gojira in so many ways. Not a second went by that they didn’t have the entire audience by the pits of their stomachs, unable to blink with anticipation for every synchronized beat. I had to catch myself in the moment and stay with the performance in order to absorb it to the fullest, as much as I wanted to drift into a lullaby. Slaying songs like, “Vacuity” and “The Art of Dying” transitioned the entire set in the strongest, and most flawless performance I’ve ever witnessed. Everything was perfect, down to the implausible drum solo that left us totally speechless, to the faultless extended experimental solo from Mario Duplantier. Nearing the end of the set, Mario delivered an intensively moving statement paralleling, “This song is about the inner child that we all have protecting us. Always be true to yourself,” segwaying into “L’Enfant Sauvage.” Gojira was demanded back to the stage with an ear-shattering encore, where they absolutely killed “The Gift of Guilt” off of their new album, L’Enfant Sauvage. At no point in time was anyone lacking in energy or true commitment and passion to give Pittsburgh an incredible show. Their entire performance just made about 75% of every other metal band I’ve ever seen look like little girls. These guys were so crisp and clean that one could literally hear a pin drop at a pause from anywhere in the venue, and Jean-Michel delivered one of the most undulant bass performances unlike any I had seen. Oh yeah, and did I mention they were sick?

Devin Townsend to stream sold out Retinal Circus tomorrow and Tour with Gojira & The Atlas Moth (including PGH)

Tomorrow (October 27th), renowned multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and now ringleader, Devin Townsend is gearing up for one of his biggest accomplishments to date: The Retinal Circus. Set to take place at London’s historic Roundhouse venue, this one-night only event has been sold out for over a year now; however, fans worldwide can still watch this event live online, thanks to Northern Music Company & InsideOut Music in association with Live Music Stage.

To watch Devin Townsend’s Retinal Circus online, please visit www.livemusicstage.com/retinal-circus to purchase your tickets (tickets can be bought now for £7.99, which is roughly $13 and €10; paypal and all major credit cards are taken). Then on October 27th at 7PM GMT (8PM CET//2PM EST//11AM PST//2AM Perth//3AM Tokyo//5AM Melbourne time, etc.) head back over to www.livemusicstage.com/retinal-circus, log in with your ticket number and watch the folly unfold.

Devin describes the Retinal Circus as: “a retrospective of my career in music to date, with the central theme being a metaphor of how life and the adventures therein are a ‘circus’ of sorts. The show involves a cast of characters and guests that support this theme through carnival type performances. A story about how a troubled young man dreams of fantastic scenarios, (illustrated through the music of my back catalogue), which ultimately crests in the characters realization that life is all about the relationships we have with each other. This is the first opportunity I have been given to make theatrical representations of my music.”

This three hour plus performance will include:

– A retrospective of Devin Townsend’s entire career
– Full choir and theatrical cast
– Visual and aural enhancements unlike any show Devin has done to date
– Several special guests
– Circus and carnival performances and cast
– Art exhibit of Devin’s albums, including explanations of each album

Live Music Stage offers high-quality, social live gigs and concerts on the web. With Live Music Stage, you’re always in the front row.

Devin Townsend to Stream Retinal Circus Extravaganza

On October 27th, renowned multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer and now ringleader, Devin Townsend is gearing up for one of his biggest accomplishments to date: The Retinal Circus.

Paradise Lost Finds Their Way in Pittsburgh

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is sometimes so impossible to fathom why some bands break in the states and others do not. For a band with a twenty four year history and massive European following, you would think that there was something “weird” about Paradise Lost that makes American audiences miss out on one of the most talented and entertaining bands in the metal genre today. There are so many “no-talent” acts out there filling sheds with people that could not hold a candle to these guys- is it just that certain “metal” stations don’t get it? Are they not kissing the right behinds? Whatever the explanation is, there are a few in the know music lovers that discovered these guys ages ago and then there are newbie converts like myself who cannot get why Paradise Lost is not mentioned in the same breath with many acts- including Metallica. Obviously they are a massive influence on many musicians who are ripping them off as we speak. But I suggest you seek out the real deal.

Last night Pittsburgh Music Magazine did just that and had the chance to sit down with Aaron Aedy, rhtyhm guitarist of PL. What follows is a very introspective interview of life on the road, a long history of influence, and some of what makes Paradise Lost tick…Paradise Lost Aaron

Their performance at Mr. Smalls in Millvale was mind blowing and had many an audience member who had not witnessed PL before rushing to the merch tables to pick up their latest effort, Tragic Idol. Check out Tragic Idol streaming here: http://www.decibelmagazine.com/featured/streaming-paradise-lost-tragic-idol/

The latest video was also released recently:

For a little bit of history of PL, its best to take it straight from their bio on their website: http://www.paradiselost.co.uk/

“Thirteen albums into Paradise Lost’s 20+ year career, namedropping is pointless. The only band they can and should be held up against for comparison and consideration is Paradise Lost.
With a career dating back to 1988, and their official recording debut in 1990 (Lost Paradise), the band has been riding and rollercoaster of highs and lows that began in earnest with their fourth album, Icon, in 1993. It presented Paradise Lost as a band that had more to offer beyond their established doom-death metal sound, driving the point home in 1995 with Draconian Times, an album that is considered to be a goth metal benchmark to this very day. That they would follow their international breakthrough with a slide into the realms of electronica only two years later (One Second) boggled the collective mind of Paradise Lost’s devout fanbase, yet their new direction earned a following of its own. The band made a gradual return to the swamp that spawned them, however, beginning with 2002’s Symbol Of Life. Elements of their favoured doom-goth sound grew consistently darker and louder with each album that followed, and each time the curiosity as to how far Paradise Lost would take this comeback grew.
It’s fair to say the band’s new outing, Tragic Idol, is the album fans of the Icon and Draconian Times era have been waiting on the edge of their seats for.
Recorded at The Chapel Studios in Lincolnshire, England, with vocals laid down at Fascination Street Studios in Orebro, Sweden and produced, mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (OPETH, BORKNAGAR), Tragic Idol is a no-holds-barred album that, according to guitarist Greg Mackintosh, was “influenced more by classic metal and classic doom metal than anything else.” Lead-off track ‘Solitary One’ and the closing dirge of ‘The Glorious End’ echo this statement with their crushing doom approach, while the sledgehammer riffs of ‘Crucify’, ‘To The Darkness’ and ‘In This We Dwell’ draw Paradise Lost out of the goth realm, simultaneously pulling naysayers of the genre into the darkness. This is par for the entire course of Tragic Idol; for every plodding doom-oriented track there is a song loaded with traditional metal riffs and guitar leads, making it a feast for anyone who takes pleasure in being crushed by a wall of guitars.
Vocalist Nick Holmes leads the charge, as always, singing his guts out rather than opting to growl and croon his way through the proceedings. In a day and age when gothic metal is often defined by how closely the vocalist can mimic the late and great Peter Steele (TYPE O NEGATIVE), Holmes attacks with a diversity and aggression that raises the bar for veteran would-be goth heroes and newcomers to the scene.
Holmes’ lyrics have always been traditionally dark and introspective, and Tragic Idol is no exception. There are no verses for the fantasy and folk metal set, no tales of boy-meets-girl; he chooses instead to focus on the depths of stark reality.
“I wrote a lot about truth and honesty,” says Holmes. “We’ve got a song called ‘Honesty In Death’, and (my) initial thoughts were about how humble death makes people, how insignificant little problems are. It makes you realize what’s really important in life.”
As for calling the album Tragic Idol, it’s the appropriate title for an album unleashed upon a modern day society that, in general, believes all that glitters is gold. The title track is a classic case of Paradise Lost putting life in perspective and pounding the message home:
“It’s about the beauty and innocence of youth,” Holmes says of ‘Tragic Idol’. “Worshipping another human being with an equal amount of susceptibility to pain, suffering and depression as the next person, but by some chance has been propelled into some godlike status. Adulation eats away and makes the person ugly on the inside, believing their self importance to be above others, not realizing their insignificance and irrelevance in the grand scheme of things.”
Tragic Idol as a whole isn’t merely Paradise Lost’s long-awaited return to form; it’s a soundtrack inspired by life, served up as a well-meant kick in the teeth.”

Devin Townsend Project Puts An Epicloud Over Pittsburgh

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The legendary Devin Townsend hit Pittsburgh last night and proved why he rules at all that he does. A musician that follows his own heart, mind, and soul, Townsend is the rare talent that has learned how to survive in a heartless business on his own terms. By following his own path, Devin has created a fan base “that gets it” and loves him for it. Yesterday marked the release of his new LP “Epicloud” that continues on that road of creating epic walls of sound, with the Townsend signature, that transcends through multiple genres and luxurious landscapes of melodic metal mastery.
When Townsend hit the stage at Altar Bar in Millvale last night, he was all smiles, and for good reason, his fans packed the place and roared in adoration. But, as you listen to the interview that follows, Devin does not treat his audience as fans, but as equals. He is one of them, they are him. You can’t help feel the camaraderie that generates from a crowd like that in Pittsburgh last night. And Townsend led that crowd like the pied piper with his bandmates in DTP and led them through the vast history of his music making. Jeering, laughing, scowling, clowning, and screaming, Townsend can go from operatic levels and then dip down into the gutter at a moments notice. Epicloud is such an incredible example of the journey that Townsend has the ability to take his listeners on. But don’t just take my word for it- check out Epicloud streaming here.

Stolen Babies Tour with Epic Kings & Idols Lineup

20120602-102729.jpg

This September, California avant-garde metal band STOLEN BABIES will be touring the United States with co-headliners Devin Townsend Project, Katatonia, and special guests Paradise Lost as part of the “Epic Kings & Idols Tour” (DTP and Katatonia will alternate in headlining each show). The tour kicks-off in Seattle, WA at Studio 7 on September 4, 2012 and travels throughout the United States until September 24th when it comes to a close in Baltimore, MD at Rams Head Live. The “Epic Kings & Idols Tour” VIP pre-sale begins Wednesday, June 6th; tickets will be available to the general public starting Thursday, June 7th.

“We’re very excited about being on this tour with such a great line-up,” states STOLEN BABIES drummer Gil Sharone. “It’s the perfect way to start the touring cycle for our new album that will be released later this year with No Comment Records.”

STOLEN BABIES will also perform select shows this summer before the “Epic Kings & Idols Tour” begins, including a special show with Dredg at The Roxy in West Hollywood, CA, the “Gothic Theatre Block Party” in Englewood, CO at Moe’s, and a special headline show at The Metro in Salt Lake City, UT.

Having theatrical roots, STOLEN BABIES formed from a 12+ member performance troupe named The Fratellis. Horns blared, oversized dolls jumped out of toy boxes, squabbles were had, and babies were stolen, turned into flies and fed to giant spiders. Eventually, the blundering theatrics came to an end, but the four stuck together to create more emotionally focused songs with a new band name taken from one of the skits entitled, “Stolen Babies”, performed by their old incarnation. STOLEN BABIES’ musical style is a cauldron of ideas that serves up a wonderful variety of vibrant styles meshed together into a pure chaotic frenzy—and it works. The band’s most recent release, There Be Squabbles Ahead, was released to positive reviews in 2006 with The End Records/No Comment Records.

See below for all current STOLEN BABIES tour dates and stay tuned for information on the band’s second full-length album, coming soon!
