WORLDWIDE PANIC Release Official Music Video for “Party”

 Party Cover Art

LA Based Heavy Metal Band WORLDWIDE PANIC has released the Diego Gonzales directed official music video for their newest single, “Party.”

“In my perspective it was a challenge to us as a band as well as in respect to finding a director. There are no shortages of videographers and directors in Los Angeles County. I know a lot of great ones that are total visionaries and could have easily shot this video and it would have just been another day at the office for them and I didn’t want that. I wanted to find someone who had the same passion for the song that we had. The moment I spoke to and met with Diego and showed him the song and saw his reaction we immediately started storyboarding with each other. It was not an easy task to complete in any regard. We wanted something extremely specific that was based on true life events that occurred in my life. Finding the actors, booking a sound stage, finding a crew, getting props, and be lengthy processes to deal with. A week to the date, Worldwide Panic, myself and Diego spent four hours at a professional soundstage filming the band performance and that weekend we had casted the actors who take this dream and turn it into a nightmare. The scenes portrayed in this video most actually happened to me. It is still difficult for me to watch this and not feel empathy for the actor on screen. I could not believe that those things happened to me in real life and now I am where I am living a happy fulfilling life. I think the rawness captured in this video encapsulates many life lessons I had to learn the hard way. Even with the dark subject matter of the song and video I like that it is done in a fun way and makes something that was very painful entertaining and fun and teaches people to avoid the many pitfalls that exist in society. It is with great pleasure I present, Party!” – Lane Steele (Bass / Vocals)

“On this track we had the pleasure of having my good friend Aaron Nordstrom help produce the vocals. He had this to say, “I’ve known Lane Steele for many years since we were in school together. I’ve seen him evolve and work very hard for awhile and find his voice as a musician. I had the pleasure of working on the song “Party” and enjoyed it very much. It was a smooth workflow and resulted in a great song. Take a listen and be sure to catch them on the road with Flaw this fall.”
– Aaron Nordstrom (Gemini Syndrome)

Retro Rewind: Deftones Signify the Death of Nu-Metal with White Pony

Deftones jumped off the nu-metal train right before it crashed. Limp Bizkit was just starting to get obnoxiously popular, while Korn was continuing their run through grindy, drop-D tuned metal. Deftones, unsatisfied by relying on the growingly stale nu-metal conventions, wowed everyone with their third LP, White Pony, which had all the heaviness of their previous two albums combined with spacey and textured compositions sounding more like The Smiths or The Cure. White Pony is a finely crafted mix of rhythmic heaviness and dreamy synth experimentation that shows what Deftones would become later in their lifecycle. It’s a fantastic album that defines the band’s unorthodox influences and puts the waning nu-metal fad in its place.

The brief traces of melodic creativity seen on the band’s second album Around the Fur in songs like “Be  Quiet and Drive (Far Away)” and “MX” are no longer just traces. White Pony is a very multi-layered journey in surreal metal/alternative bliss. Singer Chino Moreno flaunts his love for My Bloody Valentine and The Cure with serene and breathy vocals in the gorgeously atmospheric “Digital Bath.” The less aggressive songs like “Teenager” also let newly inaugurated DJ/keyboardist Frank Delgado show his chops in creating beautiful and airy soundscapes, something that felt limited during his guest performances on the past Deftones albums. On the album’s crowning achievement, the Maynard James Keenan-guested “Passenger”, the chorus restlessly bursts from a subconscious steadiness, one that stands as one of the best songs ever composed by the band. These lengthy moments of sensory fluidity are ambitious moves that turn out to not only make a great album, but also define the band’s sound entirely going forward.

But don’t think that the focus on dreamy trip hop influences means that Deftones have gone soft. These Sacramento metalheads are still masters of the rhythmic grind. Guitarist Stephen Carpenter still has a very distinctive playing style compared to the metal guitarists of thrash metal and when combined with bassist Chi Cheng’s thick and weighted beats and drummer Abe Cunningham’s steady drum pacing, White Pony is a monster of gravitational heaviness. “Elite” is a thunderous and ravenous metal track, where Chino Moreno belts out with “when you’re ripe, you’ll bleed out of control.” The band never goes overly intricate with their sound; there still aren’t any expansive solos, no polyrhythmic drum fills, nothing impossible to speak of. It just fits together so incredibly cohesively. The songwriting of White Pony demonstrates not minimalism, but fundamentalism, where the ideas of both nu-metal and alternative trip hop are stripped down and mixed together perfectly.

By stepping away from the genre they helped create, Deftones signified the looming death of nu-metal with White Pony. The fundamentals of rhythmic metal are still there, but Deftones defy the other musicians in the genre by never keeping themselves in one position. Alongside the dreaminess of “Digital Bath” and “Teenager” stand ferocious metal tracks like “Elite” and “Feiticeira.” This contrast is a bit sudden throughout the album, but you can see brilliant traces of cohesion in “Knife Prty” and “Change (In the House of Flies).” Though nu-metal may have been continuing further in bands like Linkin Park for years onward, Deftones showed that the fad had been drained of creativity and that more needed to be brought to the table. Deftones signified the beginning of the end of nu-metal, but with White Pony, they opened a brand new side of the brain for metal to explore.

from OneLoveForChi.com

Our dearest Family,

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emegency [sic] room and at 3 am today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.

With great love and “Much Respect!” Mom J (and Chi)

Pittsburgh Music Magazine would like to send out our deepest sympathy and prayers to the entire Chi Cheng and Deftones families.

PMM’s Top 5 Metal Releases of 2012

2012 has been a pretty amazing year for Pittsburgh Music Magazine, hell it was the year of our inception. Many of you may have noticed that although we cover all genres around here, two of our writers are pretty serious metalheads. To try to narrow down the top 5 metal moments of 2012 is a pretty hard task, it was a very good year for releases in the genre that very few are brave enough to adore outloud and even fewer truly understand. Metal has progressed and has so many classifications at this point that one needs Sam Dunne’s charts from VH1 and Wikipedia just to wade through it all. Trust this writer, it has been an amazing year in music, and just keeping up with all that is going on in the little niche of tunes I adore can be no small task. So with further adieu, here are PMM’s Top 5 Metal Masterpieces of 2012:

betweentheburiedandme2012
1. Hands down without a doubt, Between the Buried and Me’s: The Parallax 2 Future Sequence is the metal record of the year. With an unbelievable mix of prog metal mastery, this band refuses to slow down and seems to only get better. Many of their peers think the same, just check out some different band comments on Facebook (i.e. Mike Portney (Faith No More/ Ozzy) or Scott Cowan (Deception of a Ghost)). Brutal one second, soothing the next, piercing and thought provoking all the next…don’t miss this one whatever you do.

2012DeftonesPress1071112

2. The “comeback” of the year was The Deftones. Many of you probably expected me to say Soundgarden, and that is definitely honorable mention, but Chino and crew have come back with a vengeance. Koi No Yokan is the best since White Pony and is ear bending from first note…like they never went away. Sickeningly talented and devastatingly brilliant.

witchcraft-header

3. Witchcraft, the little doom/stoner rock band from Sweden, swept me off my feet this year with Legend. A bit Queens of the Stone Age meets Sabbath and Deep Purple thrown in with some Soundgarden grungy mix. It’s 70’s metal with a new twist.

gojira_68b-credit-gabrielle-duplantier (1)

4. French metallers Gojira provided the soundtrack for our trip from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to catch this years Mayhem Festival. Un-freakin-believable. I still can’t get enough of this record and everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I discover more. Best thing they have ever put out to date, solid from end to end.

04675cbf-9194-4325-9dc3-5c2f8b3f795bwallpaper
5. So many could sit at this spot. And I am going to totally cheat…a four way tie. Periphery, Battlecross, The HAARP Machine, and Deception of a Ghost are all “newer” bands that have infected me this year and made me a loyal fan. Please check these guys out and tell them we sent you when you go see them…for they all bring it big time live. Go buy ALL their CD’s now- you won’t regret it!
