PG.LOST Swedish Instrumentalists Stream Versus Full-Length At Decibel; Record To Drop This Friday Via Pelagic + European Dates Supporting Alcest And Mono Confirmed

“At seven songs, Versus runs the gamut from calm and serene to thunderous and powerful, hitting every point in between.” — Decibel

Long-running Swedish post-rock collective PG.LOST will unveil the breathtaking sounds of their fifth full-length, Versus, this Friday via Pelagic Records. A true post-rock masterwork, Versus is brimming with melancholic depth, emotional heaviness, and catchy musical ideas delivered as one in an incredible mass of sound. It’s sometimes easy to forget that there are only four people creating these vast orchestral landscapes.

In advance of its release, today Decibel Magazine is streaming the offering in its entirety noting, “The Swedish instrumentalists have an ear for creating soundscapes that serve as epic listening experiences, and with Versus, PG.LOST makes it clear that their new album is no exception. At seven songs, Versus runs the gamut from calm and serene to thunderous and powerful, hitting every point in between.”

Comments the band, “With a few albums, in hindsight we can proudly say that we’ve achieved something special with Versus and maybe for the first time in ten years we’ve created an album that sonically sounds the way we wanted it to. It’s not the typical post-rock trip but instead it’s a full-bodied intense journey with our recipe of growling bass, heavy drums and wide guitars – but this time surrounded with an electric atmosphere.”

Fans of Mono, Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai, Cult Of Luna, EF, Caspian, and Russian Circles pay heed.

Said Echoes And Dust of the offering,Versus is a real gem of an album. There are so many facets to behold, to analyze, and to appreciate. Sometimes it is a sluggish and lumbering beast of a track with slow riffs and heavy tones. Other times, it’s got a driving beat behind it, flirting with post-metal territory. My favorite times are the cinematic passages of electronica-lead calmness, like it was a bonus track from the ‘It Follows’ soundtrack.” In a 9.5/10 review Progressive Music Planet gushes, “Where have you been all my life, PG.LOST?… Too often I think I’ve heard everything but then an album like Versus comes along and shakes me. This is how to make powerful instrumental music.Versus is without a doubt one of the better albums of 2016.” Adds South China Morning Post, “Much like sonic peers Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, PG.LOST create haunting soundscapes through the rise and fall of dense percussion and intricate guitar play, and while they have sometimes lost their way, here they have achieved a harmonious balance.”

The sound of PG.LOST is throbbing with great melancholy, but there’s also a certain element of dirty rock ‘n’ roll found deep within, as in the crushingly heavy closing section of monumental opening track “Ikaros,” in the distorted bass line kicking off the second movement, “Off The Beaten Path,” or in the huge roomy drum sound in general.

The band bought their own studio just before the recordings of Versus, which made the recording process both easier and more difficult. “It’s easy to play around too much when you don’t have studio time that is costing money,” comments guitarist Gustav Almberg. Additionally, the effect-saturated vocals, which were a trademark on previous PG.LOST releases, have disappeared on Versus, and given way to more keys and synths. “Kristian was in the middle of heavy touring with Cult Of Luna playing keys every day during that time, so he had a lot of synth-based ideas for songs. I guess this has helped us to take the band into a bit of a new direction sound wise.”

Rising avant-garde trio BRAIN TENTACLES has just shared a new music video for their new single “Fruitcake,” taken from the band’s forthcoming self-titled debut. The clip is currently playing at Clrvynt observing of the band overall, “This collaboration between Bruce Lamont, Dave Witte, and Aaron Dallison makes music that veers from sinewy and crushingly loud to surreal and carnival-esque and back again at breathtaking speeds. Given its members’ musical reach, though, the expansive sound heard on their self-titled debut comes as no surprise.”
Comments Dallison of the visual accompaniment to “Fruitcake,” “We are super stoked at the visual splendor that Don Tyler brought to the table in the creation of this video! We hope everyone else enjoys as well.”
View the “delightfully ludicrous” “Fruitcake” video alongside an in-depth interview with Lamont and Witte who talk “great beer, great bars, and the range of music they’ve played” at THIS LOCATION.
The first new song from the album, “The Sadist,” recently premiered via Decibel Magazine and can be heard at THIS LOCATION. You can also stream the album trackKingda Ka” (which was previously released on a split with labelmates Ringworm) HERE.
Brain Tentacles will be released September 30th on CD, LP, and digitally via Relapse Records. Physical and digital preorders are available at THIS LOCATION.
The self-titled debut album from mind-melting metallic jazz trio BRAIN TENTACLES is a journey in improvised and structured experimental sound from three venerable scene veterans. Featuring Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Bloodiest, Corrections House etc.) on horns, voice, electric piano, and synth, Dave Witte (Discordance Axis, Municipal Waste, Deny The Cross etc.) on drums, and Aaron Dallison (Keelhaul) on bass, voice, and synth, Brain Tentacles sees the three-piece weaving their way through twisted, seizure-inducing compositions that call to mind the insanity of John Zorn’s storied project Naked City and Mike Patton’s most erratic experiments. The BRAIN TENTACLES collective are masters of tension with the album moving unpredictably from mathy chaos to ponderous, juddering grooves that warp time in their wake, darting from one extreme to the other via insane rhythms and truly progressive, expansive songwriting. Occasional vocals (including a guest appearance from Oxbow’s Eugene Robinson) lend an even sharper edge to the album, which is sure to blow away fans of instrumental and vocal-driven music alike. The record was produced by Sanford Parker (Minsk, Yob, etc.) and features artwork by Jef Whitehead of Leviathan!
BRAIN TENTACLES will be supporting dissonant death metal legends Gorguts and stoner/prog heavyweights Intronaut on a month-long tour of North America this coming October. The tour will kick off in Boston on October 3rd and run through October 30th. Check out a full itinerary below.

Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt Going “All In” With New Music

By Roadrunner Records

Opeth mainman Mikael Åkerfeldt is interviewed in the new issue of Decibel, and offers some hints as to the direction their next studio album, which will be recorded this year, could take.

Mikael Åkerfeldt

“I have about six songs done and another two or three just started, plus a million ideas that I haven’t processed yet. Some songs are simple and stripped-down, while others are epic in the true sense of the word. Business as usual, hopefully with unusual music.” He says some songs may even feature strings. “Some of these things could easily be done with synthetic sounds or effects,” he said, “but recording the Storm Corrosion LP with Steven Wilson made me realize what a massive difference it can mean to incorporate the real shit. I’m semi-pretentious in my songwriting and sometimes I go all in. I think it’s time for ‘all in’ with strings and the full monty. Hopefully it won’t be a mess.”

MONSTER MAGNET Takes Decibel Magazine Flexi Series to “Infinity” and Beyond

“Wyndorf’s songs are like sci-fi adventures in the brain of an LSD-gobbling hippie”

-Decibel Magazine-

“Dave Wyndorf and company dial back into what made the band counterculture legends in the first place.”

-Blabbermouth-

Way back in October of 2006, DECIBEL MAGAZINE made MONSTER MAGNET‘s fantastic space rock voyage Dopes to Infinity just the 20th inductee to the Decibel Hall of Fame. The epic leadoff title track set the tone for the triumphant stoner opus, and is one of the band’s most beloved jams. Now, nearly 20 years later, Dave Wyndorf and the latest incarnation of the band revisit “Dopes to Infinity” for the Decibel Flexi Series!

Arriving on metallic-gold-on-green vinyl, “Dopes to Infinity (Alternative Version)” presents a more expansive, ruminative vision of the super-charged 1995 original. It’s a unique take on a classic rager, and DECIBEL MAGAZINE are the only ones who have it for you — exclusively, as always — in the February issue.

Subscribe to Decibel by 9 a.m. EST, Tuesday, December 4 to ensure that you’ll get “Dopes to Infinity (Alternative Version)” in the February issue.

SATANIC MALFUNCTIONS: UK Hardcore/Punk Act’s First Album In Twenty-Two Years Streaming At Decibel

Them, the first LP from UK hardcore punk trio SATANIC MALFUNCTIONS, is out now via Poland’s demolition experts, Selfmadegod Records. Surging with rabid, old-school circle-pit intensity and politically-oriented, cynical and pissed-off lyrical tirades, Them dispatches twenty tracks in just over thirty minutes, resulting in one of those “get this now” releases for devotees to acts like Active Minds, Disorder, Doom, Atavistic, Electro Hippies, L’arm and Heresy.

Decibel Magazine is now hosting a full-on stream of the entire Them LP to celebrate its release, joined by a rapid interrogation of SATANIC MALFUNCTIONS’ percussion specialist, Ade. Check it out RIGHT HERE.

Pick Them up via Selfmadegod, who in 2012 also released the SATANIC MALFUNCTIONS Disgrace To Music 2xCD compilation both previous LPs and all EP and compilation tracks. Merch bundles are available now direct from Selfmadegod HERE, and Them is available digitally HERE.

The newest SATANIC MALFUNCTIONS LP since the Scarborough, UK-based act’s 1990-released Disgrace To Humanity, the whirlwind of old-school hardcore punk on Them is a throwback to the mid-late ’80s hardcore scene when grindcore was only beginning to take shape. Recorded by Bri Doom, of UK crust legends, Doom, Them proves that the quartet — vocalist Kai, guitarist Yaga, bassist Ryan and drummer Ade — haven’t let their guard down, and are as capable of deploying the same aggressive, ultra-fast and frenzied socio-political musical melee they did more than two decades ago.

GIGAN: Extreme Metal Technicians Drop Second Track Of Torment Via Revolver Magazine

Extreme metal technicians, GIGAN, offer up a second helping from their forthcoming Multi-Dimensional Fractal Sorcery And Super-Science full-length, set to detonate this Fall via Willowtip Records. Recorded with renowned sound-weaver Sanford Parker (Minsk, Buried At Sea, Yakuza) at Earth Analog Studios in Chicago, the eight-track offering is a unapologetically mauling, technically boundless pummel fest that’s at once musically proficient and psychologically enthralling. As such, Revolver Magazine seeks to bend your brain with second track, “Influence Through Ritualistic Projection.”

Elaborates GIGAN master of molecular meltdowns, Eric Hersemann, of the tune, “‘Influence Through Ritualistic Projection’ is the second track on Multi-Dimensional Fractal Sorcery and Super Science. The song centers around a race of beings known as the Uumpluuy that, through science and Magick, have influenced countless worlds in both negative and positive ways. They have achieved this by projecting their subconscious forms into various realms and making subtle changes in both the environment and mentalities of the indigenous races.”

Let the transformations begin. Point your browser HERE.

And if you missed it, you can still check out the otherworldly sounds of “Electro-Stimulated Hallucinatory Response,” now playing at Decibel Magazine, HERE.

The brainchild of left-handed lead guitarist and founding member Eric Hersemann, GIGANhas been challenging the mortal laws of extreme music and creativity since early 2006. Forged around the simple notion that the imagination should be art’s only limit, GIGAN’s style of creative delivery has simultaneously invoked reactions of amazement, disbelief, shock, awe and ultimately, respect.

Multi-Dimensional Fractal Sorcery And Super Science will be released in North America via Willowtip Records October 15, 2013. Preorder details and live assaults to be announced soon.

“The difference between them and the throng of Cynic-fellating bands that have been kicking around as of late is that GIGAN have personality beneath their guitar wanking and trippy asides.” — MetalSucks

PIG DESTROYER’s Prowler in the Yard Inducted Into Decibel Magazine’s Hall of Fame

The undisputed Kings of Grind PIG DESTROYER have been inducted in the prestigious Decibel Magazine Hall of Fame.  The band is being inducted for their album Prowler in the Yard that was released in July 2001 via Relapse Records.  Prowler in the Yard will see a deluxe remixed and re-mastered reissue via Relapse in the near future. The Decibel Magazine issue can be purchased HERE.

Decibel editor in chief Albert Mudrian spoke about the band’s inclusion in the Decibel Hall of Fame:

“Two cover appearances, one album of the year nod (for 2007’s Phantom Limb) and one limited-edition live flexi disc for our 100th issue show just wasn’t enough PIG DESTROYER love from Decibel. So we did the right and honorable thing by FINALLY inducting their landmark Prowler in the Yard record into our vaunted Hall of Fame. Now all that’s left to do is to get some of Scott Hull’s DNA to mix into our printer inks.”

Guitarist Scott Hull commented on the honor:

“It’s such an honor to have PITY inducted in Decibel’s HOF.  We aren’t a group of guys to look back on anything that we’ve really done, we usually just keep looking forward.  When Albert got in touch and said that he was going to induct the record, it gave Jr, Brian, and myself a chance to reflect on how much fun we were having back in 2000-2001 wihout any pressure, without any expectation . . .we were just trying to make a kick ass record for no one but ourselves.  Totally DIY, in our basement.  It’s been a long road since then. The success of PITY meant that we could pretty much keep that MO, as we have pretty much done with all our records since then.  I personally want to thank Albert, Kevin Stewart-Panko and the Decibel staff for the recognition and for the thought and care he put into the feature.”

KALMAH: Finnish Death Metallers Post New Track Via Decibel Magazine

As the release of KALMAH’s Seventh Swamphony full-length draws near, today Decibel Magazine hurls forth a stream of second track “Deadfall” from the Finnish death metal miscreants!

rotate_swamphony

Recorded at Tico-Tico Studios in Kemi, Finland, the follow-up to 2010’s critically acclaimed 12 Gauge release was mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street Studios by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork, Paradise Lost, et al) and showcases the Oulu outfit’s signature brand of frantic, yet melodic death metal tempered here by a new-found epic mournfulness. Notes New Noise Magazine in an early review of the offering: “Seventh Swamphony features quality over quantity and you will be aware of that on the first listen. Never have I heard the band so supercharged and ready to slaughter as they are featured here. Even the slower paced ‘Windlake Tale’  correctly utilizes a death growl vocal approach to its melodic folk and works well as a blueprint to show Amorphis what they’ve been doing wrong all of these years. Quite simply put, Seventh Swamphony might very well be one of the heaviest folk metal albums that I’ve heard in years and should go down in the band’s history as one of their most memorable releases. Chalk another one up for victory, KALMAH. How much better can these gentlemen get?”

Witness “Deadfall” courtesy of Decibel Magazine at THIS LOCATION.

Seventh Swamphony will be released in North America via Spinefarm Records digitally on June 18, 2013 and on CD June 25, 2013. For preorders, point your browser HERE. Additionally, if you missed it, check out the heroic devastation of the band’s “Seventh Swamphony” video courtesy of Metal Injection HERE.

PIG DESTROYER Re-Signs to Relapse Records

Fresh on the heels of the release of their critically acclaimed fifth album Book Burner, The undisputed kings of grind PIG DESTROYER have re-signed with their long time record label home Relapse Records.

The band commented on the re-signing with Relapse:

“Super excited to be a part of the extraordinary Relapse Records again! A song comes to mind in the melody of the “Team America” jingle. “Relapse, FUCK YEAH! Once again, signing a muthafuckin contract!”
– Adam Jarvis

“Relapse has been a great home for both ANb and PIG DESTROYER since the very early days. We’re not an easy band to deal with but Relapse has been patient, enthusiastic, and accommodating to our headache-inducing schedules, our strict adherence to not touring or behaving like a normal band, and just generally being pains-in-the-asses. We wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
– Scott Hull

“I don’t always sign contracts with record labels, but when I do, I choose Relapse.”
-jR Hayes
