Review: Death Ray Vision: We Ain’t Leavin’ Till You’re Bleedin’

Current members of Killswitch Engage and Shadows Fall and ex members of Overcast and Cannae combined forces in the project Death Ray Vision and their debut 12 song album “We Ain’t Leavin’ Till You’re Bleedin'” which was released on Bullet Tooth on September 10, 2013.  Oft described as metallic hardcore with  old school hardcore roots, fans of bands like Cro-Mags, Leeway, Suicidal Tendencies or Bad Brains will find the influences immediately drawn from at the top of the surface.  According to vocalist Brian Fair, “When Mike and I first met, we went to see Leeway and Breakdown play in Boston. My love for raw, metallic hardcore began that day and the energy and insanity in that club is something that has stayed with me forever.”

Produced by legendary hardcore guru Dean Baltulonis who has helmed albums for Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Madball and Most Precious Blood, DRV describe these new songs as “short blasts of energy and intensity built on thrash metal rhythms and chugging guitar riffs”.  True to their word songs like “Over My Dead Body”, “Break Every Chain”and “Fuck Compromise” are throwbacks to furious punk roots with a very hardcore edge.  One can see the pit circling up and bruised bodies being ejected as the songs progress.  “Condemned When You Were Born” has a bit more thrash bite to it reminding me of some Scotty Ian riffage/chugging and definitely has more metal tinge than punk purity.  “A Forest (of Kegs)” tone and guitar pace steps back a bit leaving the listener wondering what direction the ride is taking next, the drums and bass laying down a very rhythmic pounding charge somewhat in a Metallica vein if there must be a comparison, but yet not quite.

Death Ray Vision’s first EP was a lot of fun, a lot of punk, a bit of metal, and maybe only one throwaway instrumental.  “We started the band to have fun, there is really no other reason to do Death Ray Vision,” states bassist Mike D. “Apparently we were having so much fun when we started writing for the 1st EP that we just kept writing and writing. All of a sudden, we had a crap load of tunes.”  DRV decided to stay with Bullet Tooth for their full length debut, “Josh Grabelle and Bullet Tooth have the capacity to get our record out to more people then we can reach on our own,” explains Mike D. “It also doesn’t hurt that he is an old friend and is really excited about DRV. What more could you want?”

Grabelle is as enthusiastic about the signing as the band is. He’s known the members for years, almost signing Killswitch Engage in 2000. “I’m a huge fan of Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and Overcast,” he said. “I first met Brian Fair in 1995 at an Overcast show in Erie, PA. I’ve been friends with Mike D for years as well. Mike D told me he had started a new band and I already knew it was gonna be awesome, and it was! I was honored they thought of me and Bullet Tooth and I know we will knock it out of the park together.”

We Ain’t Leavin’ Till You’re Bleedin’ is definitely worth more than a listen, in fact, it should definitely be in your download list if you love metalcore, punk, or thrash.  Fans of Killswitch and Shadows Fall have probably already picked it up, but if you have not don’t go looking for what those bands have been producing, this is something entirely different.

These veterans of the Boston metal scene play a raw brand of metallic hardcore that recaptures the energy of their old school hardcore roots infused with all they have learned and experienced as musicians over the past decade. Produced by legendary hardcore guru Dean Baltulonis who has helmed albums for Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Madball and Most Precious Blood, these new songs are short blasts of energy and intensity built on thrash metal rhythms and chugging guitar riffs.
“Its a swift 30-minute kick to the nuts. No fucking around and
right to the point.” – Brian Fair (Shadows Fall / DRV Vocalist)
You say you like circle pits? You say you like Punk and Hardcore? You say you hate your parents? Well this is the band for you! Pissed off and abrasive, Death Ray Vision is dedicated to that old skool passion and aggression you still crave. If you’re a fan of Cro-Mags, Leeway, Suicidal Tendencies or Bad Brains, then look no further. Without fail, Death Ray Vision delivers uppercuts straight to your gullet, then repeatedly peppers your forehead with sledgehammer fists. That’s right, the beatings are swift and pummeling on this record, with 2 minute anthems of ruckus chaos, party jams. The perfect soundtrack to set the city a blaze, or discreetly create a mosh pit in your bedroom.
“Break out your boom box and get ready to shred that mini ramp kids … The Energizer Bunny
has nothing on Death Ray Vision.” – Mike D (Killswitch Engage / DRV Bassist)

According to vocalist Brian Fair, “When Mike and I first met, we went to see Leeway and Breakdown play in Boston.  My love for raw, metallic hardcore began that day and the energy and insanity in that club is something that has stayed with me forever.”
After breaking their silence onstage at local Boston hardcore shows, Death Ray Vision entered Mad Oak Studio in MA with producer Benny Grotto to record their debut EP “Get Lost Or Get Dead”.  The recording, which the band self released, captured the raw energy and emotion of the band combined with a modern production, seamlessly bridging the gap between the past and future.  The sessions were the creative spark that inspired the band to continue writing and see how far they could push their sound.
“We started the band to have fun, there is really no other reason to do Death Ray Vision,” states bassist Mike D.  “Apparently we were having so much fun when we started writing for the 1st EP that we just kept writing and writing. All of a sudden, we had a crap load of tunes.”
While gathering material for a full length release, Death Ray Vision caught the attention of Bullet Tooth, a label that has a staff with very similar backgrounds and history in the heavy music scene as the band.  Having a label that embraces the same DIY ethic as the band was a necessity. Joining forces with Bullet Tooth was the perfect way for Death Ray Vision to reach a wider audience without having to sacrifice the independent spirit of the band.
Josh Grabelle and Bullet Tooth have the capacity to get our record out to more people then we can reach on our own,” explains Mike D. “It also doesn’t hurt that he is an old friend and is really excited about DRV. What more could you want?”

I was honored they thought of me and Bullet Tooth and I know we will knock it out of the park together.” The exclusive signing announcement and DRV interview is located at MetalInsider.com.
With their new label partnership in place, DEATH RAY VISION have recently completed tracking for the new LP with producer Dean Baltulonis (Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front) which will be released in the summer of 2103.
“The band is really excited to get back in the studio,” explains Fair. “These new songs have pushed our sound to a new level and we can’t wait to unleash them on the world!”
DEATH RAY VISION recalls the insanity of the old hardcore days while remaining focused on destroying the future.

Death Ray Vision is:

Bullet Tooth signs The Smoking Hearts from the UK

Bullet Tooth is excited to announce the signing of The Smoking Hearts from the UK! The band will release their Bullet Tooth debut album “Victory!” this summer in North America and Japan. Playing with the likes of The Used, Asking Alexandria, Gallows, Andrew WK, and many more, The Smoking Hearts have cemented their reputation as one of the most exciting young bands in the U.K.

In fact, Jay and Moose from Bullet For My Valentine recently told the UK press, “We think everyone should check out The Smoking Hearts this year, they are good mates of ours. A brilliant band, think Motörhead on more speed beating up the Anti-Nowhere League then bumming The Ramones. Seriously, think about that. They have a new album out this year called ‘Victory!’, a definite recommendation.”

Joining the family at Bullet Tooth and having labelmates like Affiance, Throw The Fight, First Blood, Serianna, Death Ray Vision, and more, was important to the band. Calvin Roffey (Bass) commented, “I’m really excited that The Smoking Hearts have joined Bullet Tooth. It’s great that we’re able to release Victory! with a group of people that understand what we’re about as a band, and can help us reach new people that will rock out with us. Really excited to work with the people that have bought us some of of our favourite bands through the years, and together put The Smoking Hearts on the map.”

Vocalist Ben Mills also checked in, “Feels good to finally have a US home, and on such a killer label as Bullet Tooth – we had such a great time when we went to the States for SXSW and Houston we have a problem, be good to finally have a release out in the US and Japan, to give us a reason to come back.”

There is no such thing as a dull moment for The Smoking Hearts. Live shows have seen guitars smashed and drum kits sprawled across stages and it is not uncommon to find half the band playing in the crowd while singer Ben Mills is in the back of the venue, on the bar, or hanging from the rafters, all the while coercing the crowd into joining the party.

After releasing their debut album Pride of Nowhere to rave reviews from the British music press (KKKK – Kerrang!, 8/10 Rocksound, 8/10 NME), The Smoking Hearts hit the road on their first national tour to support the release, wreaking havoc throughout the U.K. and Europe.

With the release of their new album Victory! coming this summer, The Smoking Hearts are getting ready to show the world the result of those writing sessions. Once again proving that their unique blend of high-energy Rock ‘N’ Roll has the dexterity to resonate with Punk, Metal, and Hardcore crowds alike.

Recorded with Dan Weller and Justin Hill (Enter Shikari, Young Guns), and recorded over a period of four weeks in Fortress Studios, London, Victory! is an aptly titled record. Clocking in at just over the 30 minute mark, Victory! is a celebration, a testament to The Smoking Hearts’ DIY/ ‘never say die’ approach to life on stage and off. Featuring guest backing vocals from over 40 of the band’s friends, Victory! is a party of an album, the soundtrack to every good night out.

The past 18 months have seen The Smoking Hearts go from their bedrooms, to clubs throughout the U.K. and Europe, destroy down in Australia as part of Soundwave Festival and even wreak havoc in the United States. Now, with the release of their new album, The Smoking Hearts intend on celebrating their victory worldwide.

Stay tuned for new music, videos, tour dates and more from The Smoking Hearts! Catch the band LIVE this coming weekend (February 10) at The Grand Hall 2 in Cardiff, UK with Bullet For My Valentine.

The Paramedic Debut Album “Smoke & Mirrors” Out Now

The Paramedic are excited to release their Bullet Tooth debut “Smoke & Mirrors” TODAY! The metalcore album is lighting the internet on fire with polarizing talk from fans and is currently sitting at #8 on the iTunes Metal Chart. Intensity, emotion and raw power are three ways to describe Dayton, OH’s The Paramedic. But to pigeon hole the band with just three words would simply be an injustice to this group. Formed in late 2010 by friends Jake Nolan (Guitar), Travis Adkins (Bass), Tony Hovater (Drums), Sean Salasny (Guitar) and Mike Luciano (Lead Vocals); The Paramedic is poised to spearhead the next generation of dynamic metalcore bands, thanks in part to Luciano’s diverse R&B background. The band delivers a unique mix blending the insanity of Asking Alexandria, the electro-sensibilities of Attack Attack, and the soulfulness of Jonny Craig.

Living the dream is a philosophy that Mike Luciano and the guys thrive to live out on a daily basis and will have nothing stand in their way. Against his parents’ wishes, Luciano dropped out of college to pursue his dream of making it in the world of music. This intense internal struggle has made Luciano’s lyrics a personal one-of-a-kind statement that range from raising awareness towards rape to standing up for what you believe in. Judging by the nearly 300,000 views of their cover of Lil’ Wayne’s “6 Foot 7 Foot” on YouTube and their 50,000 fans on Facebook, all of the hard work and life altering decisions have been worth it.

In early 2012, the bands’ dream finally came together when New Jersey based record label, Bullet Tooth, signed The Paramedic to a deal. Joining other acts such as Affiance, Serianna, Death Ray Vision and more, the band is sure to reach new audiences that they only ever dreamed about. “It’s been our dream to not only be signed to a label, but also to a label that we know and trust and with Bullet Tooth, we know we are getting just that” said vocalist Mike Luciano.

The band is preparing for bigger tour dates (to be announced soon!) and Luciano goes on to say “We could have never done this without the help of a reputable label and now that we have the backing of an amazing label, we plan on making nothing but the best for our fans. We cannot wait to see what the future holds”.
