Volbeat Seals The Deal and Boogies with Killswitch Engage in Pittsburgh

The States have been fortunate as of late, having Danish “metalbilly” band Volbeat tour here with some stalwart bands.  Last time around it was Anthrax and Crobot and the current tour is with Killswitch Engage and Black Wizard.  Volbeat’s current line-up consists of vocalist and guitarist Michael Poulsen, guitarist Rob Caggiano, drummer Jon Larsen and bassist Kaspar Boye Larsen and they have a rep for bringing the goods.  Seal the Deal & Let’s Boogie was released worldwide on June 3 and their sixth record is one of their strongest starting off with singles, “The Devil’s Bleeding Crown” and “For Evigt” (Forever) or the English version”The Bliss”.  Pittsburgh’s show at Stage AE was exceptional and there was a great blend of old and new material to entertain fans (see set below). Poulsen was a commanding presence and the acquisition of Anthrax’s Caggiano is certainly the coup of the band’s history.  The new record picks up where  Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies left off and their performance of the new tunes was spot on.

Metalcore act Killswitch Engage returned to Pittsburgh as well after a few years of absence again with lead singer Jesse Leach in tow.  No offense to Howard Jones (in between singer of KSE), but Leach’s return to the fold has made them more entertaining than ever.  Due to the intense heat, the stage antics of Adam Jonathan Dutkiewicz were a bit more subdued than usual, but the intensity was amped to replace the jumping around.  KSE is firing on all cylinders right now and seems to be even more back in the groove than ever before, making them a band to truly watch rise in popularity (if that’s possible).

Vancouver’s Black Wizard opened and brought their brand of doom-stoner metal to the masses.  These guys are definitely onto something as they have a great sound, look, and cool throwback chops.  You can check them out here http://www.blackwizard.org/.

DANKO JONES Releases Controversial, Provocative New Video for “Legs”

Watch the UNCENSORED Version HERE

It gives us great pleasure to present yet another intriguing visual installment fromDANKO JONES, this time it is the official video for their latest single ‘Legs’. With acclaimed and often controversial Canadian director Bruce LaBruce at the helm they’ve produced a visually captivating video by mirroring the works of Pierre Molinier and applying an artistic yet eccentric use of sexuality.

LaBruce, who is best known for his sexually charged and culturally challenging productions have been looking forward to working with the band for a long time, says LaBruce, “I’ve known Danko and John for many years, and I went to many DANKO JONES shows when they were first starting out in Toronto and in New York./…/ After reconnecting with Danko last year at his book launch, we decided it was finally time for me to do a video for them.” The video itself is in line with the direct vision LaBruce had to create a spectacular and unexpected video for the song.“Danko suggested their song Legs, and for some reason I immediately thought of some of my sexy and leggy acquaintances in the M-Ftranssexual community. I really love the work of the famous photographer Pierre Molinier, whose gender bending photographs have influenced a variety of artists, so I decided to pay tribute to his work in the video.” Alongside LaBruce was art director Kenny Baird who, together with LaBruce, has worked notably with Floria Sigismondi on some of her most successful music videos, to help recreate the style and mood of Molinier.

Link to video: http://youtu.be/rvOtTkm0QHQ

This out of the box thinking has resulted in a striking and unique video to join the long list of video installments the band has made over the years including the Below The Belt trilogy and their documentary Bring On The Mountain(both directed by The Diamond Brothers). Danko says, “Why this collaboration with Bruce LaBruce didn’t happen sooner is beyond me. From writing the liner notes to our second release, to using our song in his 1999 movie, “Skin Flick/ Skin Gang”, Bruce’s connection to our band is irrefutable.”

This past year the band has been touring extensively. Not only have they sold out shows all over Europe and Canada, they have finished their two biggest US tours to date; supporting Volbeat across the country as well spending 5 weeks on the road with the 2013 Uproar Festival. They’ve also reached theirhighest ever radio ratings in the US with the single ‘Just A Beautiful Day’peaking at no. 26 on the Active Rock charts.

This new collaboration with LaBruce is paving a new road of artistic creations for the band: “For us, Bruce directing ‘Legs’ has been a long time coming and of course, good things come to those who wait. This music video is a trip. We love it. We know you’ll love it too.”

DANKO JONES Releases Podcast Featuring Guns N’ Roses Members

Listen to yet another intriguing podcast episode from DANKO JONES’ world of music, madness and interesting characters. In episode #57 of the podcast Danko corralled both Dizzy Reed and Richard Fortus (Guns N’ Roses) during the Rockstar Energy Uproar Tour this past summer to chat about ZZ-Top, Billy Idol, Rihanna, them joining Guns N’ Roses, the concept of wearing capes and bowling with W.A.S.P guitarist Chris Holmes. The episode is available for streaming and free download here: http://www.dankojones.com/episode-57-dizzy-reed-richard-fortus/. Other recent podcast episodes feature guests like Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Goatsnake) and Jørgen Munkeby, singer/saxophonist/guitarist of the brilliant band, Shining.

On October 22nd, a re-release of Rock And Roll Is Black And Blue was made exclusively available on Spotify (http://open.spotify.com/album/3GU0bsPoRg3vmAzRNmSzuR) including two previously unreleased tracks; “Crazy In Bed” and “Whatever Happens”. The latter is also featured on a limited (500 copies) three track 7-inch that was just released together with Skullcandy. As the two additional tracks you can hear the band’s latest single “Legs” along with the track “Dance” recently heard in the film Kick-Ass 2.

The latest DANKO JONES single “Legs” has quickly become a live favorite and is played frequently on radio in the US. A video was recorded in late October with Canadian director Bruce LaBruce and art director Kenny Baird and is set for release in November. LaBruce is known for his sexual, artistic and culturally challenging productions and we are convinced that the result will be spectacular.

The band just started their fall tour through the Nordics with no less than 18 shows total. In addition to the tour they will also do three gigs in Ontario, Canada towards the end of November.

DANKO JONES: New Album ‘Rock and Roll is Black and Blue’ to be Released in North America on October 9, 2012

DANKO JONES is extremely excited to announce that they will be releasing their new album Rock And Roll is Black and Blue on October 9, 2012.

Over the course of six full-length albums, DANKO JONES has forged a singular sound that draws equally from the blues, ‘60s garage, ‘70s hard rock, ‘80s hardcore, punky power-pop, Scandinavian metal, and classic stand-up comedy records without ever being fully defined by any of those sources. But while built from the same rudiments, each DANKO JONES record possesses a distinct sonic identity. Born A Lion (2002) brought the boogie and sledgehammer soul; We Sweat Blood (2003) was, by contrast, more anxious and aggro. Sleep Is the Enemy (2006) wielded the sharpest hooks. Never Too Loud (2008) was as slick as Below the Belt (2010) was stripped-down. But, compared to all that’s come before, Rock And Roll Is Black And Blue is, hands down, the most emotional and, as a result, the most epic DANKO JONES album to date.

Now, don’t be scared off by those E-words – there’s not a children’s choir, orchestra or piano ballad to be found within a 500-mile radius of this album. But what you hear on Rock and Roll is Black and Blue is the DANKO JONES ideal blown up to skyscraping proportions, resulting in 13 tracks that are bolder, brasher, and brawnier than anything they’ve attempted before.

The album is produced in full by their longtime partner in crime Matt DeMatteo and was mixed by Mike Fraser, known for his work with AC/DC, Aerosmith, Franz Ferdinand and Elvis Costello to name a few. It is also the first album recorded with “new” drummer Atom Willard – the sixth person in DANKO JONES history to hold the “drummer” title, but the first to stand on equal creative footing with Danko and his longtime foil, bassist John “JC” Calabrese. The man’s résumé speaks for itself: Not only was Willard the driving percussive force behind Danko’s all-time favorite San Diegan garage-punk armada Rocket From the Crypt, he’s also been keeping time for the multi-platinum likes of the Offspring, Social Distortion and Angels & Airwaves, so he knows how to drum his way around a massive tune.

The first single – “Just A Beautiful Day” – will be serviced to radio all over the world shortly.
The new album follows the June release of Bring On The Mountain – a two disc DVD featuring a 90 minute documentary, a short film, exclusive live clips from around the world and all the music videos they have ever done.

A lengthy European tour scheduled for October / November was announced during spring and with ticket sales already looking great we expect most shows to be sold out well before the doors open. Tour dates in Canada, US and Australia will be announced soon with more European touring and a busy festival summer in 2013 also on the horizon. European tour dates can be found here:

Danko Jones: Bring on the Mountain DVD is a Must See

Seems like every band has a documentary about them these days. Some of them are riveting and some of them are just merely lame promo videos. But, lately it seems like efforts from everybody like Foo Fighters to Kings of Leon to Lemmy have produced fascinating looks into the lives and trappings of being in a band.
Well, add Danko Jones to the list of must see DVD’s. (check out a preview here). We here at PMM got a special preview and fell in love with the doc and Danko Jones’ music.
Bring on the Mountain keeps your attention from beginning to end and has some truly introspective and honest moments.
How Danko Jones built their rep and tackled the business really will take you aback, especially the way things happen on the fast and furious track of social media today. Artistic differences, producer problems, collaboraters, tours all over the world, studio shots, lyrical insight, Spinal Tap moments, every element one craves for in a visual history of a band is there. One of our favorite quotes has to be, “We’ll leave the saving the world to Bono” when talking about how they just want to rock and entertain. It’s amazing that DJ has the amount of video archives to draw from over their 15 year career. We cannot stress enough how much you need to check the doc out.

Canadian rock phenomenon DANKO JONES’s DVD collection, Bring On The Mountain, is in stores now and definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of DJ or just a fan of music. The two-disc DVD features a comprehensive 90 minute documentary spanning the band’s incredible career, including a slew of exclusive live clips from some of their most memorable performances from around the world. In order to give their fans the best viewing experience possible, the band has blended the greatest clips and moments captured on video throughout their career—forming the outstanding DVD that rabid DANKO JONES fans have been clamoring for. Shot by the Diamond Bros., the documentary offers a unique insight into the ups and downs of one of the hardest working bands around today.

An extra special treat for fans comes in the format of a short film titled The Ballad of Danko Jones. Based on Danko Jones’ most recent video trilogy, the film features actors Elijah Wood, Selma Blair, Ralph Macchio, Jena Malone, musicians Lemmy (Motorhead), Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE), and many other familiar faces. All 19 music videos the band has ever made, including videos that have not been available in over 10 years, are also included.

DANKO JONES recently wrapped up recording a new album at Noble Street Studios in their hometown of Toronto, ON with producer Matt DeMatteo, and is currently in Vancouver working on the final mixes with engineer Mike Fraser. The currently untitled album is expected to be released early fall 2012.
