Black Label Society and Corrosion of Conformity Storm Stage AE Pittsburgh (w/ guest Red Fang)

Entering Pittsburgh’s Stage AE, “Zakk Wylde may be the last true Guitar God on this planet,” was overheard within the enthusiastic crowd.  Wylde may have made his fame from being Ozzy‘s on and off guitar player, but he has forged a loyal group of followers and fans with Black Label Society.  And why wouldn’t he?  The man consistently tours either with BLS, Ozzy, Zakk Sabbath, or solo.  He plays the guitar like it’s another appendage and he has the strut and attitude of the old regime of metal gods.  The fact that he is built like a brick shithouse and looks like sasquatch stole a biker’s outfit only adds to his persona which includes being one of the most serious guitar players to not take himself seriously.

Pittsburgh is lucky enough to be on BLS’s tour list for quite some time and their performance (Feb 6, 2018) proves why the crowd keeps coming back.  Opening with Genocide Junkies from 1919 Eternal, the band just kept ripping it up from there as they dove into Funeral Bell and Suffering Overdue.  Wylde continued to let his guitar do the speaking as John (JD) DeServio (bass), Jeff Fabb (drums), and Dario Lorina (guitar) pummeled their individual instruments with abandon.  Watching Zakk get up on his riser, skull and cross adorned mike stand and all, and whip his hair in a frenzy as he plays more notes than your fingers can air guitar to in mere seconds is a rush each and every time one might see him live.  The fact that he consistently has put together a very tight band to work with him adds to the appeal of BLS, for the members are a traveling family of sorts.

BLS are touring their latest release, Grimmest Hits. Grimmest Hits, the highly anticipated follow up to Billboard Top 5 charting titles Catacombs of the Black Vatican (2014) and Order of the Black (2010).  It reached #1 on the Billboard Hard Music, #1 Independent, and #2 Rock Charts. The LP was also the #1 selling album at Best Buy for the week of its release, beating out Grammy nominated, Fall Out Boy by a considerable margin.  Upon its release last in January, Grimmest Hits landed at #1 spot on iTunes Top Rock Albums Chart and #7 on the Overall Top Albums Chart. Full setlist here.

One of the favorite parts of any BLS show is the inevitable solo by Wylde as he plays behind his head and every which way in between passing through the crowd and even into the balcony.  Add to this BLS hits such as Suicide Messiah (inspired by Scott Weiland’s life), the Dimebag Darrel tribute In This River (with piano solo), as well as the classic Stillborn (that features Ozzy doing backing vocals on the record).  As always BLS brought the goods and distributed them freely and viciously, keeping us wanting more.

A special treat to the show was the edition of Corrosion of Conformity.  COC has been on a tear recently as they have reunited with Pepper Keenan on guitar and lead vocal.  Pepper has become a fave due to his role in Down with ex-Pantera frontman Phillip Anselmo.  But, before he graced that band, he became known in the COC crowd when he first joined the band as a guitarist and was asked to do the vocals on 1991’s Blind song “Vote With a Bullet” which started their first mainstream attention.

The true four among fans of COC are considered Pepper, Mike Dean (bass), Woody Weatherman (guitar), and Reed Mullin (drums).  Unfortunately, Reed was out for part of the tour (he stuck out the first month), including Pittsburgh, as he nurses a knee injury that required surgery (filling in has been John Green, Mullin’s drum tech).  Mostly intact and with a formidable stand-in drummer, COC absolutely destroyed Pittsburgh.  The combination of stoner metal-punk that was unleashed is comparable to repeatedly getting punched in the face and getting intoxicated from it instead of feeling pain.  Keenan’s vocals were perfectly steel reinforced with just enough of that signature Pepper gravel to make them stand out.  His guitar playing is diverse and masterful as well, with a touch thrash, country rock, and true NOLA sludge blended together.  Add to this Woody’s crunchy and perfectly timed rhythm guitar in the vein of Malcolm Young, as well as Mike Dean’s solid low end, and the conglomeration leaves one with a distinct sound that can carry many variables to keep it interesting and evolving.

COC’s set was tight and powerful, not relying on spectacle but prowess and panache.  Their new effort, No Cross No Crown, is no less punitive to the ears as it hearkens to a “Black Sabbath-esque” formula containing slowed down sludge scenery.  It was released January 12th via Nuclear Blast Entertainment, toppled Billboard charts upon its first week of release earning #67 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart, #12 on the Billboard Top Current Albums Chart, and #3 on the Top Hard Music Albums Chart making it the highest charting album of the band’s career.  Captured in North Carolina with longtime producer John Custer, No Cross No Crown marks the first studio recording with vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan in over a decade and has reaped critical accolades from fans and critics alike both stateside and abroad.  Please check out our interview with Mike Dean on YouTube.

If you missed it, check out the band’s recently-released new video for “The Luddite” HERE as well as their animated clip for “Wolf Named Crow” HERE.  No Cross No Crown is available on CD, digital, vinyl, and cassette formats. Various order bundles are available at nuclearblast.com/coc-nocrossnocrown.

Portland rockers Red Fang opened the evening touring with their latest, Only Ghosts, out now on CD/LP/Digital via Relapse Records (Physical packages and digital orders are available via Relapse.com HEREand Bandcamp HERE).  Red Fang has been around since @2005.  Often put under the moniker stoner rock, the band has become a staple go-to for band fans like Mastodon and Dillinger Escape Plan.  Interestingly enough the band has announced a special wine collaboration with Teutonic Wine Company, a small urban winery in their hometown that makes wines in the style of the Middle Mosel Valley in Germany and France’s Alsace region. The wine, aptly called “Red Fang Red” is a blend of varieties that have never been done before: Pinot Noir, Tannat and Gewürztraminer.  To celebrate, Teutonic and the band teamed up for a wine release party like no other on January 13th at the Teutonic headquarters in Portland. Attendees got get to enjoy a DJ set from drummer John Sherman, a wine tasting with the band, munch on house-made corn dogs and much more.  By all means, Red Fang is a must-see for any KYUSS-style loving rocker.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY To Perform Live Dates In The US And South America

Following their recent performance at the Fifth Annual Scion Fest in Memphis, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY has announced live assaults for August. In addition to their already planned participation at Gwar’s annual BBQ, the trio will perform a headlining show in Wilmington, Delaware before heading to South America for a string of dates. The August shows mark a break from continued work in the recording studio on the band’s new album, expected for release in early 2014.

“We need a little escape from the studio,” comments vocalist/bassist Mike Dean. “We thought it would be good to see the light of the day a little bit. We are excited to play Brazil, Peru, Columbia, and Argentina for the first time ever. Of course returning to Mexico City and playing Gwar’s BBQ will be highlights for our summer as well. The new material is sounding really good but it’s time to get the perspective provided only by playing in front of a live audience. And we are talking about some very live audiences in this case.”

Updates regarding progress of the band’s forthcoming album came during the band’s late April West Coast tour with Danzig.  Dean said, “We have a lot of lyric writing to refine but a lot of solid musical arrangements are in place. We plan to begin basic tracking for half the songs as soon as we return to North Carolina.” The initial work on the still untitled album found the band not long out of the recording studio having recently completed their Scion/AV EP Megalodon. The special EP was included free to all customers to the band’s official webstore and is still available as a free download by clicking HERE. Dean notes, “The EP was written, recorded, and released in two months time.  It really challenged us in a good way.” In the meantime, fans can check out live footage of the band’s first-ever appearance in Chile at this year’s Metal Fest this past April at THIS LOCATION.

CORROSION OF CONFORMITY released their self-titled album via Candlelight Records to high praise late February 2012. It was the first new material by the North Carolina trio since 2005. “Corrosion Of Conformity is what you want out of a comeback record: not just a reclaimation of lost vigor but a meaningful update on a vintage sound,” said Pitchfork. “The celebrated Animosity line-up displays a command of style far beyond anything their 1985 selves could have imagined,” added Decibel. The album debuted on Billboard’s Top 200 chart at position 157 and impacted CMJ’s Loud Rock chart at position 8 on its debut week before working its way up to the top spot.  It remained on the magazine’s popular radio chart Top 10 for eight weeks.

Formed in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY quickly transformed heavy music. The band has influenced countless new bands and today remains humble about their accomplishments.  To date, the band has sold over 1.1 million albums in the United States and continues to find new fans via non-stop touring.

New “GWAR-B-Q” Commercial Released – Tickets to Go On Sale on June 6th

New “GWAR-B-Q” Commercial Released

Tickets to Go On Sale on June 6th

GWAR-B-Q 2013 Commercial
GWAR-B-Q 2013 Commercial
In keeping with the tradition of past GWAR-B-Q’s, Slave Pit Inc. today released their latest commercial hyping what will certainly go down in history as the greatest GWAR-B-Q yet, presented once again by the Slave Pit and sponsored by Ring Dog Rescue. With tickets scheduled to go on sale in two weeks, the countdown is on for the most decadent, delicious, and downright depraved social event for mutant miscreants in the history of this mud-ball planet! Check out the cinematic masterpiece HERE, directed by the same Slave responsible for the last two GWAR-B-Q commercials.

Tickets for this barbaric extravaganza will be available June 6th at www.gwarbq.com, and come in three different versions…

But wait! Before you buy your tickets, check out the “Win It Before You Can Buy It” contest on local Richmond radio station 102.1 the X, airing June 3rd-7th. Listen for your chance to win tickets which grant you full access to the GWAR-B-Q, “Meat and Beat”, the “B4BQ”, and the “GWAFTER PARTY EVENT”, plus the chance to become GWAR’s “Slave for a Day”, which could entail duties as critically important as draining the pus from Pustulus’ scabby leg-enders, to sitting around backstage in everybody’s way while getting completely hammered until you are thrown into a trash dumpster. What fun!

Standard Ticket – $30: All Day Event Entry – all the bands, all the fun, all the flailing! Completely free for the low price of 30 bucks!

Deluxe Ticket – $40:All Day Event Entry – all the fun, farts, and flailing, as well as an “official” 2013 GWAR-B-Q T-shirt, actually rubbed on Beefcake’s ass at one point or another.

Premium Ticket – $100: All Day Event Entry, Official GWAR-B-Q T-shirt, GWAR-B-Q2012 DVD, (see if you can find yourself throwing up) and an exclusive laminate VIP Pass for the “Meat & Beat” signing, where you can meet and hang out with the band, take photos to your hearts delight, and watch in horror as your hot or not hot girlfriend is dragged all too willingly into the special “Abyss of Abuse”, to be sullied in ways unthinkable. This ticket also includes free admission to the “B4BQ“, and the GWAFTER PARTY EVENT, where you can hang with the band and the artists of GWAR in a rare out of costume experience.  More details will be announced in the coming weeks. You will also have the chance to win an opportunity to appear on stage with GWAR, and be ground into pulp in our gore-choked meat grinder.

For those of you who were just born, or simply didn’t give a shit (which is practically unthinkable!), the GWAR-B-Q is GWAR’s annual summer slaughter-fest presenting some of the heaviest, most awesome bands the metal and punk scenes has to offer. Stemming from it’s original roots as a semi-annual party, the event has grown every year in the scope of its majesty, and this year promises to be the most incredible one yet, with a lineup that includes such heavyweights as Richmond hometown heroes Municipal Waste, the legendary Corrosion of Conformity, the aural devastation of Pig Destroyer, and a very special reunion of the infamous X-Cops, who are coming out of hiding after a 17-year hiatus spent running meth labs in Ecuador (and a host of other naughty things).  All the original members shall reunite for the GWAR-B-Q to open for the mightyGWAR.

“Just because we have all of the original members doesn’t mean the band hasn’t been progressing,,” said Cobb Knobbler, the X-Cops gay, satanic, Nazi bass player,. “I for one have been exploring the world of drug dog law enforcement…not handling the animals, but actually becoming one, through a series of extremely painful and expensive surgical procedures…the results of which I plan on unveiling at the actual GWAR-B-Q., giving me the legal right to ravage your genitals in search of cocaine!”

At this point the lineup for the days entertainment has been finalized, and two stages will barely be enough to present the enormous rock and rock spectacle that Slave Pit and Ring-Dog Rescue (http://ringdogrescue.org)shall present. The set times have yet to be finalized, but it should run something like this…

GWAR

Municipal Waste

Corrosion of Conformity

Pig Destroyer

Cannabis Corpse

Loincloth

X-Cops

Warbeast

Battlecross

Wilson

Mobile Death Camp

Volture

Kung-Fu Dykes

And if that’s not enough, there is plenty more filthy fun to overload your senses, leaving bloated, beastly, and completely broke. There will be more meat than ever, and boatloads of GWAR’s new “GWAR-B-Q” sauce to slather all over it, as well as GWAR’s new beer to wash it down your bottomless and gaping feed-hole. Just like last year, the affiar will be held at the only venue capable of handling such a stupendous event — the legendary Hadad’s Water Park…check out the details at http://hadadslake.com/

So get ready to experience the ultimate spectacle of music, meat and mayhem, as the undisputed Masters of Shock Rock prepare to unleash the greatest GWAR-B-Q in the history of this non-stop orgy of sun, fun, meat, murder, music, and straight up MAYHEM! What started years ago as a party for GWAR‘s wretched Slaves has mutated into a bonafide festival that grows every year in the scope of its debauchery.  Come take part in this Barbaric Bacchanalia!

Damn the torpedoes and let slip the dogs of war! Hail GWAR, hail Flattus, and gather with the tribe of GWAR in Richmond, VA on or around Saturday August 17th, 2013. But get there a day early for the “B4BQ” and then get ready for what is certain to go down in history as the greatestGWAR-B-Q yet!

THE AGONIST announces tour dates with DANZIG, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY

Extreme metallers THE AGONIST have announced a string of dates with DANZIG and CORROSION OF CONFORMITY along the West Coast! In regards to these upcoming tour dates (and the recent cancellation of their trek with CRADLE OF FILTH in February/March), the band comments:

“We were very honored and excited to have been included on this tour with three amazing bands that we have the utmost admiration and respect for…So when news of the cancellation came through we were not only disappointed but heartbroken about losing out on the entire experience of touring with CRADLE OF FILTH, THE FACELESS and DECAPITATED. All the members of THE AGONIST have been gearing up for this tour since the fall of last year and we were really looking forward to putting on an amazing show for both old fans and new fans alike…But alas, THE AGONIST moves on and is proud to announce an upcoming tour with the almighty DANZIG(!!!) as well as the legendary CORROSION OF CONFORMITY in the month of April, 2013! Corrosion of Conformity to Play Altar Bar 11/6

Founded by three teenagers in Raleigh, North Carolina in 1982, Corrosion of Conformity began as an underground band and went on to transform heavy music, challenging boundaries and serving as what Decibel Magazine called “a crucial stylistic lynchpin in the bridge between metal and punk” that “irrevocably reshaped crossover’s sonic possibilities.”

Thirty years and many changes later, COC’s origin
al trio is back with a self-titled release for London-based independent Candlelight Records.

“Corrosion of Conformity isn’t a comeback album or an example of diminishing returns,” Invisible Oranges observed. “It’s a testament to immense talent and the elusive endowment of staying power.”

In the summer of 2010, COC’s founding members—bassist/vocalist Mike Dean, drummer/vocalist Reed Mullin and guitarist Woody Weatherman—gathered at Weatherman’s farm in Virginia to get to work again after a five-year hiatus. With longtime vocalist/guitarist Pepper Keenan busy working with metal supergroup Down back home in New Orleans, COC began playing together as a three-piece for the first time since the mid-1980s.

That’s the same lineup behind 1985’s Animosity, widely considered a crossover classic. While the trio re-visited songs from that album and 1987’s Technocracy, this was not just an exercise in nostalgia, and they soon began writing new material.

“It was a little strange at first but pretty quickly it felt like we hadn’t missed a beat,” recalled Dean.

After touring the U.S. and Europe with bands including Goatsnake and Clutch, and appearances at festivals like Deathfest and Roadburn,, COC joined with longtime producer John Custer in early 2011 to begin recording what would be the band’s first release since 2005’s critically acclaimed In the Arms of God, which featured Stanton Moore of Galactic on the drums filling in for an injured Mullin. COC recorded all 11 tracks at Dave Grohl’s Studio 606 in Los Angeles with help from Foo Fighters’ engineer John Lousteau.

During the sessions, Custer commented on COC’s uncanny ability when in the studio to “behave as a single organism.”

Corrosion of Conformity was officially released on February 28, 2012, with artwork that features a revamp of the band’s iconic spiked-skull logo by Seldon Hunt (Melvins, High on Fire). Critics and fans alike have greeted it warmly.

“Corrosion of Conformity not only brings back one of heavy rock’s most seminal and defining bands, but it pushes that band into new ground it’s never yet known,” observed The Obelisk. “The achievement is substantial, the performances crisp, the production clear but organic, but sure enough, these elements and the varied aesthetic of the band come together to create something wholly stronger than its parts.”

Corrosion of Conformity is the band’s first release with Candlelight, which has also hosted bands including Opeth and Orange Goblin. “Animosity is one of my favorite records ever,” said Candlelight’s Steve Beatty. “To have COC on Candlelight with that line-up is simply mouthwatering.”

The band plans to embark on a world tour starting in the United States in March 2012, including three performances at this year’s SXSW Music Conference in Austin. Joining them for most of those U.S. dates will be Torche, Valient Thorr and A Storm of Light—a lineup that Dean noted is “really compatible without every band doing the same thing.” COC will then head to Europe and the UK with Black Cobra and Zoroaster.

The original members of COC are excited to be working together again.

“Mike, Woody and I essentially learned how to play music together and cultivated our own style, sound, and unspoken language,” said Mullin. “Re-bonding with them musically has been the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Kill Devil Hill Debut

The self-titled debut album from KILL DEVIL HILL, with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, KILL DEVIL HILL), Rex Brown (PANTERA, DOWN) on bass, Mark Zavon (RATT, W.A.S.P., 40 CYCLE HUM) on guitar and Jason “Dewey” Bragg (PISSING RAZORS) on vocals has been tearing up the metal charts.

“Kill Devil Hill” was produced by Warren Riker, (DOWN, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SUBLIME and CATHEDRAL). The KILL DEVIL HILL release will be available in a standard CD edition, an iTunes digital download, and double gatefold LP.

According to Vinny Appice, KILL DEVIL HILL’s sound is “like a cross between BLACK SABBATH, ALICE IN CHAINS and a little bit of LED ZEPPELIN thrown in. It’s heavy, but with a lot of cool hooks and melodic overtones, too.”
