CARCASS continues to tour in support of Surgical Steel, released in September 2013. The record came in at #41 on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart, just narrowly avoiding the dreaded “Top 40 Band” moniker. Even with their impressive back catalogue, Surgical Steel has given the band their highest charting and possibly most critically acclaimed record to date.

Surgical Steel
was produced by Colin Richardson (Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Gorefest, Cannibal Corpse etc.) and mixed/mastered by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Accept, Exodus, Testament). Joining guitarist Bill Steer and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker in the band’s current incarnation are new drummer Dan Wilding (Aborted, Trigger The Bloodshed) and guitarist Ben Ash (Pig Iron, Desolation, Liquefied Skeleton). Original sticksman Ken Owen contributed guest vocals as well.

CARCASS has released several classic albums over the years, including Decibel Magazine “Hall of Fame” inductees Heartwork and Necroticism – Descanting The Insalubrious, and their influence has changed the face of extreme metal with every consecutive release. Whether it was inventing gore-grind (see Reek Of Putrefaction, Symphonies Of Sickness) or creating the template for melodic death metal (see Heartwork), CARCASS has always made records by which bars were set and rules were broken. Upon the band’s dismantling in 1996, fans mourned the loss of the seminal act and longed that the group would return again one day. In 2007, the metal world got its wish as CARCASS reformed to play several sold-out reunion shows around the globe. Once again re-motivated to administer a shot of cynicism and infectious riffs into the arm of a sickly metal scene, founding members Bill Steer and Jeff Walker began writing what would become the latest output of their highly influential career,Surgical Steel. Only the choicest of cuts were made, and blood sweat and tears were shed to bring us a record worthy of the CARCASS legacy. In short, Surgical Steel is just what the doctor ordered.

The end is near party peoplllllllllllle. But not yet… not yet. So we had all of the fun getting up close and personal with some of you in the tiny saunas… I mean venues… that we played over the last couple of weeks. Whitechapel recently completed an extensive trek across the USA on the annual Warped Tour, touring in support of their sixth full-length, Mark of the Blade. Hailed as “an exciting milestone” (Alt Press), Mark of the Blade was produced by Mark Lewis (The Black Dahlia Murder, Cannibal Corpse) and sees Whitechapel redefine who they are and what they are capable of with the resulting 11 tracks. Kicking off with “The Void” – which has a Slayer-esque ferocity that is perfectly suited to the band’s three-guitar attack – the songs that follow all leave a distinct impression, and by the time the rich, dark melodies on “Decennium” bring the record to a close, it’s impossible to deny the emotional weight brought to bear. Alex Wade explains, “At this point in our career and as we grow older, we are taking a more open-minded approach to creating our music, allowing what we think sounds good to evolve naturally, rather than to just write what is expected of us.”

To purchase Mark of the Blade in various formats, please visit:metalblade.com/whitechapel – where the video for the latest single, “Elitist Ones”, can also be viewed.

COFFINS: Tokyo Doom Destroyers Announce US Tour Including Return To Maryland Deathfest

Following their most widely-received LP to date with the 2013-released, The Fleshland, Tokyo, Japan’s COFFINS have confirmed a new American invasion this Spring.

COFFINS will bring their diseased, suffocating death-doom decimation back to this side of the Pacific once again in May with a special mini-tour, marking a four-year gap since their previous stateside visit. Bringing forth bulldozing hymns from The Fleshland in addition to their brutal back-catalog of mid-paced gravedigging metal, in addition to their recently revamped lineup, beginning May 18th, COFFINSwill plunder Chicago, Cleveland, Brooklyn and Philadelphia before closing down the run with their return to Maryland Deathfest in Baltimore on May 22nd, their first time storming MDF since their set at the 2010 edition of the event. COFFINS will be provided with support from Chicago death’n’rollers, Bones, on the tour dates leading up to Deathfest.

COFFINS 2014 U.S. Tour Dates:

5/18/2014 Reggie’s – Chicago, IL w/ Bones

5/19/2014 Now That’s Class – Cleveland, OH w/ Bones

5/20/2014 Saint Vitus Bar – Brooklyn, NY w/ Bones

5/21/2014 Kung Fu Knife Shop – Philadelphia, PA w/ Bones

5/22/2014 Maryland Deathfest – Baltimore, MD

Their first LP for Relapse Records, The Fleshland shows COFFINS smashing down everything in their path with nine new grisly tracks, laying down over forty-five minutes of low-end, sludge-infiltrated, plodding, doom, captured with some of the best production values in the band’s meaty catalog of carnage, recorded at Tokyo’s Noise Room Studio with engineer Shigenori Kobayashi, and produced by Bungo Uchino and the rest of COFFINSThe Fleshland is available on CD, download and 2xLP. Stream the entire album and order all versions HERE.

“Tokyo’s Coffins have been at it steadily for nearly two decades, never bringing the tempos above a deathly lurch and unironically keeping it sick/staying brutal.” – Decibel

“…Japanese death metal yakuza Coffins have carved out a long and fruitful career by out-Autopsying Autopsy.” – Pitchfork

“The nine tracks on The Fleshland have a knack of crawling their collective carcass toward listeners to smear faces with their pus, making the whole thing quite fascinating…” – Terrorizer

“…their absolutely-no-frills approach is essential to what’s best about them: most Coffins songs are among the finest death/doom you’ll ever hear with nary more than the basics of the genre necessary.” – MetalSucks

YOUTH FORGOTTEN: Collective Of Cleveland Metal/Hardcore Scene Veterans Prepares To Release Debut Full-Length

Based out of Cleveland, Ohio, with a wide base of roots feeding deep into their city’s underbelly, the members of YOUTH FORGOTTEN culminate in this new outfit with a unified sense of keeping the movement alive with the utmost urgency.

While overall retaining dark hardcore/metal outfit tactics to spread their message, an influx of thrash metal dynamics and streetpunk energy coalesce in fueling the anthems YOUTH FORGOTTENdeploys. Genre boundaries and inner-scene platforms are eradicated as this quintet relentlessly dispatches song after song of energized, enraged fury, while lyrically the outfit speaks from an equally grounded, forward-thinking mentality. The lineup consists of vocalist J.C. Koszewski (Dead Even), lead guitarist Matt Brewer (ex-Integrity), drummer Rob Walters (Salt The Wound), guitarist Aaron Salo (Above This Fire) and bassist Jim LaMarca (Chimaira).

Having coalesced their collective strengths into the powerhouse dubbed YOUTH FORGOTTEN, the band recorded their debut record, Ghost Of A Fallen Empire, at RobArnoldWorld with Rob Arnold of Chimaira, marking his debut as a producer. Destroying and decimating, while aiming to aggravate and invigorate, they burn through nearly forty-five minutes of material surging with the vitality the often overlooked energy the Cleveland landscape has provided over the past few decades, concentrated into the album’s ten tracks.

YOUTH FORGOTTEN will independently release Ghost Of A Fallen Empire digitally on January 31st, 2014, with physical product to follow shortly behind; final details will be released in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the band has posted tracks “Nobody Cares,” “The Passion” and “Take Control” boasting the diversity and damagability of the album; tune in RIGHT HERE.

Having shared the stage with a plethora of regional bands as well as international acts including Hatebreed, Shadows Fall, Battlecross, Ringworm, 3 Inches of Blood, Revocation, The Acacia Strain and countless more over the years, YOUTH FORGOTTEN will take their new anthems to the public live touring in support of Ghost Of A Fallen Empire in the coming months. Stay tuned for new live actions to be announced.

Ghost Of A Fallen Empire Track Listing:

1. Anthem

2. Revolution For Nothing

3. Take Control

4. The Passion

5. Moral Soul

6. Unite The City

7. Proposed Existence

8. Nobody Cares

9. Eyes On The Prize

10. End Times

A Skylit Drive “Rises” to the occasion with their new album.

A Skylit Drive, post hardcore band from California, has certainly risen above all of their albums with their newly released album, “Rise”. After releasing four albums and a DVD many fans wondered what the next album would hold in store, and trust me when I say no one is disappointed.

“Rise” is undoubtedly A Skylit Drives best work. Everything from the albums feel to the lyrics themselves is all that a fan of A Skylit Drive would, or even could, want. They kick the album off right with an electrifying first song “Save me Tragedy” and believe me when I tell you the album only goes up from there, using the perfect blend of clean and unclean vocals, A Skylit Drive powers through the album, making sure that everyone who listens to it won’t soon forget their name. Some other gems on the album are the title track “Rise”, the second track “Unbreakable”, and the albums slower ballad “Just Stay”. Vocalist Michael “Jag” Jagmin goes above and beyond on this album, keeping his signature way of singing while still throwing out subtle changes in the best kind of way, while screamer and bassist Brian White shows how far he’s come as well. It’s remarkable how the album is undoubtedly “A Skylit Drive” while still being so fresh and new. After being a fan of A Skylit drive since the release of their EP, She Watched the Sky, it’s almost amazing to see the progress and success, but there is no doubt in the minds of fans that A Skylit Drive deserves whatever fame they can get.  This album is a must have for fans of Alesana, Pierce the Veil, and Secrets & Whisper. UNSAID FATE Premiere New Video on RevolverMag.com

When people join a band, there are never any guarantees that anyone will appreciate it, let alone like or respect its output. When they choose it as their career, the odds of finding success and reaching the hearts and minds of today’s youth is all the more distant. In short, choosing a career as a musician makes your future very uncertain. Having the drive to push through the obstacles and knowing you will find success is what four Cleveland musicians know to be their UNSAID FATE.

UNSAID FATE is preparing for the release of their debut EP Never Turning Back. After months holed up with producer Don DeBiase (Modern Day Escape, In Alcatraz 1962, Vanilla Ice) and being mixed by Steve “Skinny” Felton (Mushroomhead), the band feel they have found their apex on Never Turning Back. Today the band is stoked to debut the video for their first single from Never Turning Back entitled “Our Addiction”. Check out an exclusive premiere courtesy of Revolver Magazine HERE. The video was directed by Don Tyler, who is known for his work with Pink, Maroon 5 and Flyleaf.

“Our Addiction” is available for download on iTunes and Amazon.

Formed from the ashes of the highly acclaimed regional band JACKIE, Ohio’s UNSAID FATE have retooled and refocused their energies to fully capture the attention of an active rock audience that was quickly becoming bored with the cookie cutter sounds that were being created by the most successful bands of the genre. While bands got lazy from the spoils of success, JACKIE’s musical hunger and creativity grew; so much so that they outgrew the confines and stereotypes of the old band name. As UNSAID FATE took shape, their musical creativity and the deeper heaviness of their sound expanded with each passing day.

Led by vocalist Jackie LaPonza, UNSAID FATE reaches out to fans in an effort to let them know that the world hears their screams for a better place to exist and thrive in. “We want people to hear the words and music and feel the stories,” states the singer who was recently named one of the “Hottest Chicks in Metal” by Revolver Magazine. “They need someone to keep telling them to stay true to themselves and not to give up or give in on their dreams no matter what others say. We’ve worked on what we do for such a long time now and we would really love to be doing it full time and doing it worldwide! We want to hit the ground running and never look back.”

While LaPonza is the band’s leader, she is only one piece of the puzzle that completes UNSAID FATE. Guitarist Patrick Ols is a guitarist that combines extraordinary six string skills with an almost Punk attitude in both his playing and his on-stage presentation. He plays masterfully over top of a driving bottom end created by bassist Donovan St. Clair and drummer Mike LaPonza. As a unit, UNSAID FATE are a musical force creating a defined landscape that anxious youth can not only groove with, but can also relate to.

Winslow To Release New LP ‘Left Of The Right Direction’ March 26th

Cleveland’s heralded soul/rock band Winslow, is set to release their much anticipated sophomore album Left of the Right Direction on March 26th via Little Fish Records and RCR Recording Studios. The 6-piece teamed up with Grammy-Award Winning Producer Edwin “Tony” Nicholas (Barry White, Mary J Blige, Gerald Levert) and Grammy-Nominated engineer Nick Chahwala (Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Gym Class Heroes) to produce the new album.

In celebration of the announcement, the band premiered the album’s first single, “Alone Tonight” on WJCU Cleveland 88.7FM. Purchase “Alone Tonight,” here: http://bit.ly/WinslowAT

Winslow’s unique blend of soul, funk, rock and jazz has been described as a musical breath of fresh air. This sound, combined with the group’s polished and passionate live show has led them to sharing the stage with such major acts as Incubus, Earth Wind & Fire, OAR, Robert Randolph, Keane, Lupe Fiasco, Rusted Root, and many more.

Maurice Martin, vocalist for Winslow, explains how the band’s four years of growth and changes has led them to creating Left of the Right Direction. “We have grown a lot since our first album. I feel like our songwriting really has come a long way. We aren’t trying to fit into a mold of a certain genre or style. Our real goal was to create an album that we could be proud of. Call it pop. Call it soul. As long as people listen, they can call it what they will.”

Winslow is Maurice Martin (vocals), Matt Tieman (saxophone), Curtis Tate (keyboard), Charlie Trenta (guitar), Danny Kolliner (bass), and Jesse Marquardt (drums). Each member of the band has a background studying diverse styles of music and it comes through in the music. Subsequently, all of Winslow’s tracks can be heard as their own individual vignettes, highlighting one distinct part of the group’s musical background. Martin’s hooks and signature vocal style serve as the bond that ties the songs together and make the album cohesive.

Winslow will release Left of the Right Direction on March 26th. Please head to http://www.winslowsoul.com for more updates.

Affiance’s ‘The Campaign’ Has Killer Week- See Them Live in PGH 12/12

The new Affiance album “The Campaign” has had a successful first week! Some great sales numbers have charted them at #7 Heatseekers, #7 Top New Artist, #37 Top Hard Albums, and #53 Top Indie Albums. Singer Dennis Tvrdik commented, “We are absolutely stoked that we charted on Billboard! Our fans are insanely supportive and believe in us not only as a band but as people. Thank you to everyone who bought The Campaign. We are forever grateful!”

The band just premiered their first music video from “The Campaign”! The video is for the opening track “Kings Of Deceit” and shows the band performing as well as newsworthy moments from the last few decades. The song also features Dustin Davidson from August Burns Red (courtesy of Solid State) who gives a great vocal performance!

“We were really excited to do a serious and dark video since our biggest video is us running around in our pajamas and playing a video game. This video is for the first track on the album and we wanted to start ‘The Campaign’ off by calling out the media and the powerful who orchestrate and manipulate the biggest events throughout modern history. It also shows a different side of us than our ‘Call To The Warrior’ video. You know us as easy going, good time dudes, but we are also dead serious about making positive change in the world around us.” – Dennis Tvrdik (Vocals)

Dennis Tvrdik commented on the new album (Produced by Carson Slovak at Atrium Audio who has recently finished records for August Burns Red, Texas In July), “The Campaign is multiple levels above No Secret Revealed in every area. The vocals, the drums, the guitars, the recording quality, the song structure, the variety… We couldn’t be happier or more confident with a sophomore album. It almost feels like we skipped a release between the two albums! There is not a doubt in my mind that this will be a game changer for us and will open many doors to opportunities otherwise closed off from us.”

Affiance recently appeared AS A CARTOON (yes, a cartoon) in a new interview with South Africa’s MK Ondergrond! The interview appeared on national SA television but can be seen on YouTube along with recent interviews with In Flames and The Used. Singer Dennis Tvrdik talks about their hometown of Cleveland, the metal and hardcore scenes, touring, music videos, and more. The guys launched their new music video for “Nostra Culpa” this Spring and it is available on YouTube! The video showcases the band doing what they do best, and that is performing LIVE. Heavy Glow To Release “Mine All Mine” TOMORROW Via Their Website!

“steeped in psyche-soaked proto-metal, gutbucket garage rock and bone-deep 70s blooze…”-Classic Rock Magazine

“Mine All Mine” is part of the 7″ they’ll be touring to support in 2013 and will be released on their website tomorrow 11/8/12 …check it out here

Psychedelic blues rock band Heavy Glow displays a mastery of confidence and emotive power in their untitled follow-up to the highly acclaimed album “Midnight Moan.” To be released in 2013 under Purge Records and with the addition of a new drummer, the new album is a culmination of everything the band has been working towards since forming in 2008. The finished product flaunts nuances of retro rock through hard-and-heavy guitar tones, bombastic drum-playing and suave bass lines. Front man Mullins injects raw soul into his entrancing vocal melodies and cascading choral harmonies to create a sound that is both informed by the past and undeniably modern.

Heavy Glow started with an Internet ad, drums, and a bass guitar. Hailing from the rustbelt city of Cleveland, Ohio, drummer Jared Mullins moved to San Diego and began posting ads on Craigslist looking for a bass player. Joe Brooks responded. After Jared switched from playing drums to playing guitar and singing, the two formed Heavy Glow: heavy rock with a glow of sensual swagger. The band soon caught the attention of legendary producer and renowned guitarist Stevie Salas with whom they recorded their first EP in just four days at Velvet Revolver’s private studio. “Heavy Glow,” the self-titled EP, was released to favorable reviews and garnered international airplay. FOX’s television series “The Good Guys” played the track “Grinning in the Dark” in its second episode. In 2009, the band signed to Australian record label StockXChange Music Group/Sony Australia and agreed to a publishing deal soon after.

StockXChange Music unexpectedly disbanded in early 2010 without compensating the band for EP sales. Determined to move forward, the band independently recorded “The Filth & The Fury” in one, six-hour live studio recording. The resulting five tracks captured the energy and skill unique to a live performance. Classic Rock Magazine UK distributed the song “Hot Mess” in a sampler CD for its July issue. “The Filth & The Fury” was nominated for Best Rock Album of the Year at the 2010 San Diego Music Awards. Following the album’s success, the band toured throughout the southwestern United States.

“Midnight Moan”, the band’s first full-length album, was independently released in 2011. Recorded in under a week, the nine-track album explored darker and sometimes murky themes but still managed to receive rave reviews. Mullins permeates his soulful lyrics throughout a wide variety of rock subgenres from 60’s psychedelia to 70s AM radio, heavy sludge, and even Delta Blues.

Drummer Andrew Hoffman officially joined the band in March of 2012 after the band’s appearance at SXSW. Adding a tasteful balance of jazz-inspired flourishes and thunderous athleticism, Hoffman’s beats can be heard on the upcoming album.

Fans of every music genre have been pleasantly surprised by the band’s unique sound with radio play in over 22 different countries and countless international press reviews.

The band’s west coast tour from San Diego to Seattle kicks off in January. Following the 2013 album release, the band will embark on an extensive European tour.

Jared is the rock. Joe is the roll. Andrew is the life-blood. Together they are Heavy Glow.

INHALE EXHALE Debut Video for ‘Low’

Post-hardcore heroes INHALE EXHALE are debuting their new video for “Low” today exclusively at Metal Injection. A ferocious performance clip with a frozen tundra serving as the stage, the video is the first from the band’s fourth album, Movement, released earlier this month on Red Cord Records.

“We picked ‘Low’ for first video because thematically it centered around the album title, about making choices and moving forward,” explains guitarist John LaRussa. “It’s not the heaviest song on the album, but we thought it hit hard and we loved the chorus on it.”

Watch “Low” now at Metal Injection:
http://www.metalinjection.net/tv/view/10257/inhale-exhale-low-music-video

“The shooting process was pretty extreme,” LaRussa adds. “It was 11 hours of getting blasted with snow. It was centered a lot on performance and we definitely all felt it after the shoot.”

With Movement now in stores, the Cleveland rocker’s are wrapping a three-week tour of Europe, having stopped in Germany, Austria, Poland, Netherlands, the Ukraine and more along the way.

Self-produced by LaRussa at his own Revelry Recording, Movement is a study in controlled chaos. The volatile, melody-driven anthems carry the weight of seasoned survivors who persevere come what may. It’s easily INHALE EXHALE’s most aggressive work to date – a fact only underscored by ferocity of their previous albums. On Movement, they push the envelope on all fronts while staying true to their hearts, their fans and their roots.

Following three successful albums with longtime label Solid State Records, INHALE EXHALE have become a fixture in the hardcore and metal community – setting a high bar from day one. Now, six years and four albums in, the band has seen and done it all – surviving through gimmicks and fads that have moved in and out of heavy music and learning from them to stay true to themselves. With Movement, INHALE EXHALE prove they’ve lost none of their fire and prove that today’s up-and-comers still have a lot of work to do.

ALONG CAME A SPIDER: Behind The Scenes Video Released

As ALONG CAME A SPIDER prepares to hit the road in support of their debut If We Were Normal Men the band took time to shoot a video update of what actually goes on when the band gets ready to hit the road. Get a look into the crazy world of ALONG CAME A SPIDER HERE:

Formed at the end of 2009 by guitarist Justin Sobota, ALONG CAME A SPIDER has spent the last few years developing a lineup that featured the talent at each position in the band needed to reach further than the small confines of the Ohio metal community.

Like so many bands signed to Standby Records, CEO Neil Sheehan was drawn to the band not only by their brilliant sound which has been compared to acts like A Day To Remember, In Fear And Faith and Bless The Fall, but also to the band’s proven drive to succeed in a business that has gobbled up and spit out so many other bands of lesser work ethic. “ALONG CAME A SPIDER get it,” states Standby Records CEO Neil Sheehan. “This is a band that understands that the songs are only one piece of the puzzle, but that the work they will have to do will make the difference between their success and failure.”

Clearly the band has already proven that kind of work ethic. They have self funded everything in their career to this point, including two tours and the recording of their soon to be released album If We Were Normal Men. Regarding the title of the new album, it has significance to the band’s members, who named the album to indicate the band’s feeling about their desire and skills

If We Were Normal Men was recorded, engineered and mixed by producer Don DeBiase, who is best known for his work with bands like Modern Day Escape. Recorded with DeBiase at Studio D Productions in Cleveland, the big sound captured by ALONG CAME A SPIDER was another reason Sheehan wanted to add the band to the Standby Records roster.

If We Were Normal Men Tracklisting:
1. Inside The Killroom
2. Those Were The Droids We Were Looking For
3. Vampire Robot Barbie Dolls

INHALE EXHALE premiere “Carpe Diem” exclusively at Revolver

Post-hardcore heroes INHALE EXHALE are excited to unleash new track “Carpe Diem,” which is premiering exclusively today with tastemaker Revolver. The track is the second new song the band is previewing for fans in advance of the October 9th release of its anticipated fourth album, Movement, on Red Cord Records.

The track is representative of the Cleveland rockers’ approach on Movement, deftly avoiding pigeon-holing, remaining aggressive and technical but balancing that with melody and songwriting chops. Lyrically, “Carpe Diem” touches on themes that run deep throughout Movement.

“‘Carpe Diem’ is basically about the idea the album is centered on – moving forward and keeping your head up above all the garbage the world throws at you,” says guitarist John LaRussa. “It’s about making the most from any situation. If it’s something positive, rolling with it and remembering the good from it. If it’s negative, take it and use it to make yourself stronger. We get something out of every experience, and it’s up to us what we do with it.”

Stream ‘Carpe Diem’ now at Revolver:

Following Movement’s October 9th release, INHALE EXHALE return to Europe for several weeks of tour stops throughout Germany, Austria, Poland, Netherlands, Czech Republic and the Ukraine.

ALONG CAME A SPIDER Signs with Standby Records

Standby Records, the home of Rock N’ Roll 2.0, announces today the signing of Cleveland modern metal band ALONG CAME A SPIDER to their roster.

“It signifies that if we were in fact normal men, the dream of becoming full time musicians would not come true,” states Sobota. “Only strong willed people can strive for what they want and believe in. Normal men would have quit when things got hard, especially with how many members we lost and ones we had to remove. The title is just a question we ask ourselves everyday with the band. “What if we were normal men?” and many answers derive from there.”

“You don’t hear a band with more appeal sonically than ALONG CAME A SPIDER,” states the always candid Sheehan. “I get demos from band after band, and while some of them are good, very few grab me the way ALONG CAME A SPIDER did when I heard their new album. As soon as I heard their material, I knew a Rock N’ Roll 2.0 band was ready to be launched to the world.”

If We Were Normal Men is slated for release on October 30th on Standby Records.

Whitechapel Is A Must See At Mayhem

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

PMM had a chance to sit down with the guys from Whitechapel at Rockstar Mayhem Festival. Trying to catch up with all the bands at Mayhem proved nearly impossible! Luckily the guys with Whitechapel understood and chatted with us as they ate dinner! Listen to it here: Whitechapel

Having spent several years lauded as one of the frontrunners in their genre, in 2012 Whitechapel stand as a defining force in contemporary heavy music. Building dramatically on the trademarked bludgeon of their first three releases, with Whitechapel the Tennessean sextet have inarguably delivered their most intense, dynamic, and downright hostile record to date. Drenched in atmospheric darkness, the record is also rife with gripping melodies that drag the listener in to the tumult, willing or otherwise, and across its ten tracks it is infused with an emotional depth that pointedly separates the band from the plethora of two-dimensional mosh-starters that have sprung up in their wake. “These songs are some of the best material we have released to date, and the whole vibe of the record compelled us to self- title it,” states guitarist Alex Wade. “With every record we strive for something different – we’re always going to stay true to what Whitechapel is, but we want to evolve and do something that is fresh and engaging both for ourselves and for the people who support us.”
Setting the scene with the brooding piano that prefaces the storm of frantic riffs and pulverizing drums of opener “Make It Bleed”, it is clear that Whitechapel are coming from a place of pure darkness this time out. At times teetering on the brink of despair while always primed to fight anything and everything that gets in their way, every track has its own personality, fitting perfectly alongside each other to form a breathtaking whole. From the heads down attack of “Section 8” or the merciless “(Cult)uralist” to the apocalyptic drama of “Dead Silence” or the loping grooves of “Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence” the band put it all on the line, creating something that is as honest as it is devastating. “There’s a lot of variety on this record – it has the fastest songs we’ve ever written on it, but it also has the slowest songs we’ve ever written, so whether you like the slower grooves of A New Era Of Corruption (2010) or the really fast riffs of This Is Exile (2008) there is something for everyone on this album,” explains Wade. “It also has a much stronger sense of dynamics, because if you’re just smashing someone over the head one hundred percent of the time it can get monotonous, and there’s more melody to it too. Some of the choruses are really dark but have so much melody you could almost sing over them – which is something we would never do, but having that dynamic there is exciting to us.” Having grown displeased over time with A New Era Of Corruption, primarily due to the fact it was comprised of songs written by individual members rather than as a shared effort, the band rectified this with Whitechapel, and Wade believes this collaboration plays a large part in what sets the record apart from its predecessor. “In the credits of the last record it was like this guy wrote this song, and then this guy wrote that song, whereas there’s so much collaboration on this record it wasn’t worth going through it to try and list it in the credits, it is the product of our efforts. I think that’s cool, and it’s good to know that when we work together we’re at our finest.”
A further contributing factor to the record’s power is the addition of drummer Ben Harclerode (ex-Knights Of The Abyss), who joins Wade and guitarists Ben Savage and Zach Householder, bassist Gabe Crisp, and vocalist Phil Bozeman. “Most drummers that we had seen play our songs would kinda have to dumb it down rather than play it exactly the way it was on the record, but Ben sent us a video of him playing “Reprogrammed To Hate” and every single note, every little cymbal accent was there, so we were extremely blown away by how he had replicated what Kevin Lane had played on previous albums,” Wade states. “He sent us another video playing the much faster “Father Of Lies” and after that we knew we had to get him down to jam with us. He learned an eleven-song setlist, turned up, sat down behind the kit, and we ran through the whole set without stopping, it was like he had been in the band for years. The power and precision he brings to Whitechapel is just amazing, and having him in with us writing the new record definitely took that side of things to the next level.”
While frontman Phil Bozeman has proven himself one of the most formidable vocalists and lyricists in metal of the last few years, his previous efforts pale in comparison to his contributions to Whitechapel. “While it’s definitely brutal I would say that first and foremost it’s a dark and depressing record,” he states. “I didn’t go for one big concept that unites all the songs this time out, I just wrote about whatever I was feeling. I like that it’s kind of scattered and covers a lot of topics, and I think that’s an important part of the record’s power.” Whether ruminating on his general disillusionment with humanity (“Faces”), decrying the sheep-like nature of society as people allow themselves to be led rather than standing up as leaders themselves (“(Cult)uralist”), or giving in to the belief that there is no hope for the future (“Possibilities Of An Impossible Existence”), Bozeman never pulls a punch, and his vocal performance is equally unflinching. “I didn’t want to just have the same monotone kind of screaming, I wanted to branch out and really get the emotion behind it across. This was about getting so angry you just had to let it all out. You’re not even worrying about how good it sounds, you’re just yelling out of pure spite and rage, and I think that really comes across. I didn’t want anyone listening to it thinking it’s just the same old bullshit. We’re better than that.”
Working with producer Mark Lewis (Deicide, Devildriver), according to Wade it was not until they were in the studio and the songs started coming together that the band realized just how good a record they were making. “Honestly, everyone at the beginning of this record was kind of iffy about it,” he laughs wryly. “As we were putting the demos together we were like yeah, this stuff’s pretty cool but we were a little worried about it. But then when we got in there with Mark, every time we added a layer it just got better and better.” Blown away by Harclerode’s razor sharp performance and the huge drum sound engineered by Lewis, a killer guitar tone infusing the wealth of punishing riffs with life, and a monstrous bass sound kicking things in the ass, at every turn the band’s enthusiasm grew. “It was all just coming together amazingly, and as soon as Phil did his vocals it was like oh my God! This is our favorite record!”
Returning to their rightful place on the road, the band are enthused to take these new songs to their rabid fan base. They stand confident in their belief that their followers will hungrily devour the latest evolution of their sound, and having dramatically bolstered their fan base through blowing away the unsuspecting crowds on 2010’s Warped Tour they are sure to draw in new adherents anywhere they play. While Wade firmly believes that the band are still growing and striving to improve, for now he could not be happier with the fruits of their labor. “Every band at some point plateaus, it’s inevitable, but we’re not there yet, we’re still growing, and I think this record proves that. Looking at the finished thing – the music, the vocals, the overall vibe behind it, all the way down to the mix and the master – it’s almost like a perfect storm where everything came together just right and resulted in the record that we needed to put out.”
Whitechapel’s self-titled, fourth album, is available now!
