Red Hot Chili Peppers Get The Funk Out of Pittsburgh

For some, it is hard to be a champion of The Red Hot Chili Peppers these days.  Long gone are the under-dog years when their biggest fan was George Clinton.  Long gone are a slew of guitar players.  And probably, most importantly, long gone is John Frusciante. Frusciante, although in and out of the band twice, was some sort of lifeblood for the Chili’s.  Although it really is Keidis’ and Flea’s band, it was John who brought them into stardom through vehicles such as Blood Sugar Sex magic, Californication, and Stadium Arcadium.

So how does a Pepper fan move on?  Well, the “new kid” Josh Klinghoffer is one hell of a guitar player.  He fits much better than Dave Navarro ever did but has not proven himself as of yet to the fan base.  In other words, it’s a tough gig.  But RHCP is still relevant and still entertaining.  They put on one hell of a show and rock with the best of them.  But, like all things in us older folk, it’s just not what it was.

Jump back to 1991 at Duquesne U. when the lineup was a barely known Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and RHCP on the Blood Sugar Sex magic Tour.  Just by the sound of it, that show was hard to top, and by all means, it will remain as such.   This writer has seen RHCP at least seven times and can tear apart the good and bad of each show, except that one.  So, the question remains, do you compare?  Well, no, not if you are looking for a good time.  RHCP has evolved for better or worse.  Anthony actually has a better voice, Flea is still one of the best bass players around, period. Chad Smith is an awesome drummer. And Klinghoffer is a great funk guitar player.  They may be a bit more rough around the edges, but they deserve respect and command it live, they are incredibly tight.

Highlights of the show included a “Let’s go Pens chant” joined in by Smith, “Snow”, “Californication”, and “Otherside”.  But for this multi Chili viewer, the most fun was when the band played The Stooges “I Wanna Be Your Dog” as an intro to “Right On Time” and introducing the 70’s hit “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl) as a ‘Joy Division tune’, but we like the ‘Motorhead version better’.  Obviously, someone went to see Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and we were all better off for it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers To Welcome Rams Home To Los Angeles

Pregame Performance at LA Memorial Coliseum Leads into Rams-Seahawks on Sunday, September 18

LOS ANGELES, CA – SEPTEMBER 13, 2016 –

Los Angeles’ own RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS will help kick off the Rams’ inaugural season back home in Southern California with a performance prior to the historic home opener at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Sunday, September 18.  The pregame performance leads into the Rams hosting the Seattle Seahawks during the first NFL game in Los Angeles in 22 years (FOX 11/KTTV, 1:05 PM PT).
“Since I was a little boy, I’ve taken joy in the beauty of the Rams.  When I moved to Los Angeles in 1972, I was getting uprooted from my home and I thought, ‘Well, where I’m going they’ve got the Rams. It’s going to be all right,'” said Flea.
Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new album The Getaway debuted at #1 on the Billboard Album Sales Chart and at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 upon its release in June. The Getaway marks the Grammy Award-winning band’s seventh top 10 album and third #2 on the Top 200 Chart. The album debuted at #1 in Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, and New Zealand and at #2 in the United Kingdom and Germany. The Getaway was produced by Danger Mouse and mixed by Nigel Godrich.
The album was praised by Rolling Stone: “top-shelf modern-rock splendor”, People: “their best album in ages”, USA Today: “…proves not only that the longtime rockers still sizzle 30 years in, but also are capable of victoriously revamping their sound”, and many more.
Gates to the Coliseum open at 11:00 AM PT and fans should be in their seats 30-minutes prior to kickoff to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers performance.  Important information for those attending the game about security, parking and transportation can be found at http://www.therams.com/gameday.
Fans should be prepared for enhanced security elements at the Coliseum.  Metal detectors have been installed at all gates and guests will be required to walk through them before entering the stadium.  In addition, the Clear Bag Policy will be in effect for all games at the Coliseum this year. The Rams strongly encourage fans to not bring any type of bags, but http://www.NFL.com/allclearoutlines what bags are permissible and what items are prohibited.

CHICKENFOOT DEBUT NEW LIVE VIDEO

After re-releasing “Chickenfoot I” this week, the band has debuted a live video for “Something Goes Wrong” at Rollingstone.com today, which appears as a live bonus track on the new release. Click HERE to view.

Sammy Hagar comments: “Normally, I write positive lyrics, but when Joe brought me the music it was spooky,” Hagar tells Rolling Stone. “So, I just wrote about what I saw around me in the present and tied it into the four elements: earth, air, fire and water in what we call a solar year, or a 2,000 year cycle.”

The release features live tracks recorded throughout the “Different Devil” tour this past spring while supporting their latest record, “Chickenfoot III.”

CHICKENFOOT released “Chickenfoot III” late last year to much critical praise. “It’s hard to hate big-boned butt rock from guys clearly making it because they still love the form,” said ROLLING STONE.

BILLBOARD said, “It’s a rare case of a group that’s equal to – or perhaps even greater than – the sum of its parts…this is an album that really wins hearts with its granite thump’n’roll.” USA TODAY went as far to say that “Chickenfoot III” could be “the beginning of a riff-driven renaissance.”

In addition to a GRAMMY Nomination for “Best Recording Package,” “Chickenfoot III” saw two top five singles on the Classic Rock charts with “Big Foot” and “Different Devil.”

Re-Machined – a Tribute to Deep Purple’s Machine Head will be available on September 4, 2012

Metallica sent forth the following info on their participation in a Deep Purple Tribute Album:

We are honored to finally confirm that our contribution to the much-discussed Deep Purple tribute album Re-Machined – a Tribute to Deep Purple’s Machine Head will be available on September 4, 2012 through our good friends at Classic Rock Magazine as part of a special “fan-pack.” Those of you who know us will have figured out we don’t always take the most conventional path, and sure enough, we decided to cover a song called “When A Blind Man Cries,” which was recorded during these sessions, but not included on the album. Instead, it was used as the B-side on the “Never Before” single. The song does appear as a bonus track on the album’s 25th anniversary edition.

As you might have noticed with these fan-packs, the mag portion is always full of really cool exclusive content, and this one is no different, with 128 pages of exclusive chats with Purple members as well as one of the last-ever interviews with the mighty Jon Lord, who sadly passed away recently.

Aside from us, the likes of Iron Maiden, Steve Vai and Black Label Society also feature. Here’s the full track-listing:

1. Smoke On The Water – Carlos Santana / Jacoby Shaddix
2. Highway Star – Chickenfoot
3. Maybe I’m A Leo – Glenn Hughes/Chad Smith
4. Pictures of Home – Black Label Society
5. Never Before – Kings of Chaos
6. Smoke On The Water – The Flaming Lips
7. Lazy – Jimmy Barnes with Joe Bonamassa
8. Space Truckin’ – Iron Maiden
9. When A Blind Man Cries – Metallica

Plus, exclusive to this special edition:

10. Highway Star – Steve Vai, Glenn Hughes, Chad Smith, Lauchlan Doley

Classic Rock Presents: Re-Machined – a Tribute to Deep Purple’s Machine Head is published on September 4, 2012, so be sure to check your local rag/mag store after that date or pre-order by clicking here.

Keep your eyes peeled for additional information about a wider release of the album including the States later in the Fall.
