Remembering Oliver Withöft, co-owner of Century Media

Remembering Oliver Withöft, Co-Owner of Century Media
Withöft, 49, Passed Away January 20, 2014

“I have lost my best friend of 32 years and my business partner of 24. Although the unthinkable already happened three days ago, I am still in a state of utter shock. Oliver Withöft leaves a space that cannot be filled for all who held him dear. He was a tremendous father, husband, son and friend and will be terribly missed. I will always treasure him in my heart as the witty, brilliant and altogether great person he was. Farewell Oliver, see you on the other side and in our next life. Your brother, Robert”

–Robert Kampf, Century Media founder

Oliver Withöft, co-owner of independent record label Century Media, passed away on January 20, 2014 after falling ill several months ago. He was 49.

Born in Dortmund, Germany in 1964, Withöft studied linguistics, business and history in both Germany and the U.K. Robert Kampf started Century Media Records 25 years ago simply to create a suitable label home for his own band, Despair. He was looking for a trustworthy and strong partner to lead the company with and found this person in his best friend and fellow musician Oliver Withöft, who joined the company eighteen months later, sharing the same love and passion for music, and metal in particular. Since that very day, these two friends developed one of the most important independent record labels on the planet. Today the company has around 100 people on payroll in Dortmund, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Milan, Madrid, Melbourne and the Netherlands. A lot of musical careers were developed over the years: Lacuna Coil, Shadows Fall, Suicide Silence, In This Moment, Otherwise, Iced Earth, Die Broilers, Arch Enemy and Heaven Shall Burn are just a few of them. Century Media became a brand name recognized across the world. Oliver Withöft was always the strategic, legal and financial mind behind the organization. He was not only a strong fighter for the company, but also a very intelligent and forward-thinking leader. When the music industry drastically changed in the ’90s, he was the first to think about new ways to adapt to the needs and challenges of the rapidly-changing market. We have lost a great man with an amazing sense of humor, a warrior, and an overall very human being. Oliver leaves behind a wife, Judith, and their three daughters.

Antje Lange, CEO of Century Media Records: “I learned a lot from him in regards to business, the world and life. He was an extremely smart and visionary business man who cared a lot about the people working for him. He was one of the most open-minded and knowledgeable persons I have ever met. Oliver was responsible for a lot of successful artists’ careers and an impressive amount of albums that had an impact in the music world. It has never been easy  for him, but he was a strong fighter. A great man with an amazing sense of humor whose departure leaves a large gap in our lives.”

Ula Gehret, who handles business affairs for Century Media Records with his company Clandestine: “He had a razor-sharp intellect and keen business acumen, and as a number of people can attest to, he was not someone you wanted to be sitting across from at a negotiating table. After a few years at the label, he introduced me to how legal contracts worked. Eventually, with training, that became my full-time occupation.  It is no exaggeration to say that without his tutelage and patience, I would not be where I am today, doing something I love, and with principle. He was my mentor.”

Oliver was a very special person who touched many people’s lives in a positive and special way. This is a tremendous loss for all who knew him and it will take some time for us to grieve the passing of such a great person.

“Oliver was always a winner, one of those that I somehow thought would live forever. A genius, a friend and the best advisor I’ve ever had. It was all him behind the scenes.”

–Kobi Farhi, Orphaned Land

“Oliver and Robert had the guts, trust and belief to sign us when we were just a bunch of kids trying to play metal. Without these guys, I doubt we would be where we are today. He was not the easiest to work with back in the day, but a very cool guy.”

–Ola Lindgren, Grave

I AM HERESY sign worldwide deal with CENTURY MEDIA

I AM HERESY‘s sound is an eruption channeling the passionate hardcore/punk fury of early Boysetsfire streaking ferociously down the middle of the metallic-tinged prowess and influences of fellow hardcore giants Integrity and Converge. Imposing. Frenetic. Unrelenting. And certainly unrepentant.

After Nathan Gray (also of Boysetsfire) ended The Casting Out the start of a new era was heralded when he teamed up with this son Simon Gray and a wild bunch of likeminded musicians to form I AM HERESY. They released a self-titled debut album that was followed by the “O Day Star, Son Of Dawn”-EP shortly after in March of 2013. At about the same time they did their first European tour as well as shows on the East Coast of the USA including some with their new label mates of Vattnet Viskar,

Recently the Delaware/New Jersey sextet has inked a worldwide deal with Century Media Records and will release its second full length album THY WILL on March 3, 2014 in Europe/Australia/NZ andMarch 4, 2014 in USA/Canada.

Nathan Gray (vocals) about THY WILL“A new ethos is born…Come ye daughters and sons of chaos and mystery! We intend to rebuild and create the archetypes of rebellion and revolution against self induced repression. Reveling in anthemic battle songs of lust, pride and indulgence in order to create a ritual purification from the stagnant impotence of servitude and self denial.”

THY WILL was engineered and produced by John Ferrara at Portrait Studios who also engineered and produced I AM HERESY‘s “O Day Star, Son Of Dawn” EP. The album was mastered by Kevin Mattesky at Phantom Center Media.

VOIVOD begins work on “Target Earth” video; video stills posted online

Canadian progressive metal pioneers VOIVOD have begun work on a video for the title track of their Century Media debut album, Target Earth. The video, created by Italian filmmaker and multimedia artist, Nicola Piovesan, will recreate in 3D Motion Graphics the visions and artwork of VOIVOD drummer, Away (Michel Langevin). You can check out stills from the work-in-progress video here:

For more video stills, please visit the band’s official Facebook page:

Nicola Piovesan (aka: chaosmonger) is an Italian filmmaker and multimedia artist living in Finland. He was born in April 1979 in Venice and moved to Bologna in 1999 where he graduated in Cinema in 2004. Piovesan started making videos in 2001, and they have been screened in about 70 festivals worldwide to-date, winning more than 30 awards. He has worked as a freelance since 2005, collaborating with various production houses and private clients to produce independent short films, documentaries, music videos, and much more. In 2008 he also started teaching Cinema in a high school in Como, which resulted in him moving to Milan. In the fall of 2011, Piovesan stopped teaching and moved to Helsinki, Finland where he currently lives, continuing his work as a filmmaker and visual artist.

For more information about Piovesan, please visit:
Vimeo channel:

Recorded at producer Pierre Rémillard’s Wild Studios in Quebec and mixed by Sanford Parker (PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM), Target Earth features artwork by drummer Away (Michel Langevin), who used color schemes from each one of the band’s previous albums to make this new masterpiece. The album brings back original bass player, Blacky (Jean Yves Thériault), marking his first recordings with the band since 1991’s Angel Rat. It’s also the first to feature guitarist Chewy (Daniel Mongrain), who cut his teeth playing guitar to the late Piggy’s (Denis D’Amour) riffs, and thus has matched his style to a tee. VOIVOD, as a full group, hadn’t sat down to write a record together since 2003’s self-titled album. The end result harkens back to the group’s late 80s output and after 30 years together as a band, one of their best yet.

To purchase Target Earth, please visit iTunes for a digital copy or CM Distro for various album formats.

“…the long-awaited proper follow-up to [‘Nothingface’].” — DECIBEL MAGAZINE (8/10)

“…the songs have enough complexity, heaviness, and clever arrangements to make ‘Target Earth’ the most riveting VOIVOD album in more than 20 years.” — OUTBURN MAGAZINE (8/10)

“‘Target Earth’ is an instant classic…a contender for Best Metal Album of 2013.” —METAL

“Thirty years in, these Canadian legends are still cranking out vital and ripping tracks…”— BROOKLYN

“This is VOIVOD back to business with their best record since 1990’s ‘Nothingface.'” —AOL

Century Media Records unites with SOAR in new label deal

Century Media Records has announced a worldwide partnership with reputable UK indie Siege Of Amida Records (known as SOAR).

This new deal sees SOAR utilized as a central launch pad for the Metal and Hardcore genres, focusing predominantly on the increasingly vibrant UK underground scene and launching emerging international acts onto the circuit.

Century Media is one of the leading independent labels in the industry, boasting a gigantic back catalogue and a roster that spans almost every sub-genre within the sphere, as well as a reputation for being one of the strongest metal labels in the world.

Century Media label manager Antje Lange says of the deal: “We feel honoured and excited to work with the highly acclaimed label Siege Of Amida. They’ve proved that they have the Midas touch and the instinct for catching great new bands early and we are confident that we can put the label to the next level, on a worldwide basis.”

After starting the careers of the likes of WHITECHAPEL, ANNOTATIONS OF AN AUTOPSY, HEART IN HAND, INGESTED, TRC and DYSCARNATE, as well as being the European vessel for US bands such as IMPENDING DOOM and MOLOTOV SOLUTION, SOAR is reputed for being one of the leading labels spearheading a movement of new exciting bands within extreme music. Many of their past bands are now with larger, internationally established labels such as Metal Blade, Victory, eOne and Nuclear Blast; this deal sees them no longer in the shadow of larger labels and able to compete with the heavyweights on every level.

SOAR Director Jamie Graham adds: “After 6 years of building this label from a comparatively low level, starting out in our bedrooms, we looked back at our catalogue of releases and at the bands that moved onto bigger labels and our current roster. We realized we had something special to build on there- Century and their team understand the vision I have for this label and this deal allows our distribution and promotional network to increase a hundred fold. Working with a company as diverse, reputable and ambitious as Century Media in order to take SOAR to the next stage is the logical step for us to take. It will mean great things for our artists and for the labels growth as a whole.”

The first release to emerge from this new partnership will be from fast-rising UK crew HEART IN HAND, releasing their second full length Almost There on May 13th.

WATAIN enters studio

His Masters Noise and Century Media are proud to announce the beginning of a new chapter of the WATAIN epos! The band comments:

“Since the harvest, WATAIN have been occupied with preparations for a long and hard journey. Seeds have been sown, blades have been sharpened and new fires have been lit to illuminate the untrodden tunnels that lay before us as we descend further down the maze…”

And so it was that on the 3rd of January, 3 years on the day since the recording of Lawless Darkness did commence, WATAIN returned to Necromorbus Studio and begun working on what is to become the 5th full length album. The tentative time of release is now set for August 2013. More details will be unveiled soon.

PINKISH BLACK Upcoming Full-Length Album

Fort Worth-based duo, PINKISH BLACK, has finished recording their upcoming album and Century Media debut, set tentatively for a spring release. Self-produced by PINKISH BLACK’s own Jon Teague and Daron Beck, this currently untitled full-length was recorded at The Echo Lab with Matt Barnhart handling engineer duties. Mastering will be done by James Plotkin.

To hear some new tracks from the record, fans can catch PINKISH BLACK live on March 7th in Denton, TX at NX35 where the duo will be direct support for EYEHATEGOD. Additional tour dates will also be announced soon, so stay tuned!

PINKISH BLACK is the continuation of THE GREAT TYRANT, a three-piece that released one LP following the passing of their bass player, Tommy Atkins. When Atkins died, Teague and Beck decided to change the band’s name and remain a two-piece, yet still retain TGT’s ground-breaking sound. With no stringed instruments, the duo now relies on aura and raw emotions to obtain their unique heaviness. Their resulting effort, PINKISH BLACK’s self-titled debut (Handmade Birds Records), features seven tracks of dark, haunting deathrock–and was named one of the best albums of 2012 by Brooklyn,,, and countless others.

STARKILL to release new album, ‘Fires of Life,’ on March 5th

Century Media’s latest signing, Chicagoland-based, melodic death metal band STARKILL, will release their debut album, Fires of Life, on March 4th in Europe and March 5th in North America. The album will feature the 10 tracks listed below. The album artwork was done by renowned metal artist, Joshua Belanger, in which he properly portrayed the epic musical styling of the band.

STARKILL was formed at the tail end of 2008 by Parker Jameson, Spencer Weidner and Charlie Federici. The band makes no qualms about wearing their influences on their sleeves. They combine what they love–melodic death metal, shredding guitars, blasting drum beats and the epic sounds of modern film scores–and make some of the most promising metal music heard this side of the Atlantic in years.

MONUMENTS to Release New Single to Raise Funds for Cancer Sufferer

On October 20th, UK progressive tech metallers MONUMENTS will sell the previously unreleased track “Memoirs” as a special single to raise money for the treatment of a close friend of the band who has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer.

Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (or PMP) is a cancer of the appendix and is so rare that it can only be treated by a small number of specialists, none of whom are in the UK. Treatment must be sought internationally, and the costs are likely to exceed tens of thousands of pounds.

MONUMENTS’ Adam Swan (bass) explains: “Hi everyone! We will be releasing ‘Memoirs’ via Bandcamp as of October 20th. All proceeds will be going to our good friend Laura, who recently found out she has a condition called Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (or PMP), a rare form of cancer of the appendix that affects less than one in a million people. We will be releasing ‘Memoirs’ to raise money for her as there are very few people in the world who are able to treat this condition and none are in the UK due to its rarity. She will have to travel abroad for the treatment and it will be extremely expensive. There will be a minimum donation of £2 for the track, however it’ll be possible to give as much as you want, so please give generously. We would like to give a big shout out to Neema Askari, Joe Garret, John Sprich, James Monteith, Mel Schmidt, Steve Joh and everyone at Century Media for making this possible so quickly. Thank you.”

Check out the “Memoirs” trailer here:

The band would also like to raise awareness about this condition as it is often misdiagnosed due to its extreme rarity. For further information about PMP, please read below:

“Memoirs” will be available for purchase on CD starting the first day of the Euroblast tour at all the shows, and it can be digitally downloaded via the band’s Bandcamp on October 20th.

MONUMENTS will be touring in support of their recently released debut full-length album, Gnosis. With its groovy, melodic ambience, Gnosis packs a progressive punch, which is further strengthened by the addition of Matt Rose’s broad vocal spectrum to the band. For a preview of the album, fans can listen to the previously released tracks “Degenerate” and “Doxa” online. A video for the track “97% Static” can also be viewed here:

To purchase Gnosis, please head over to iTunes for a digital copy or CM Distro for the album, plus a special CD/t-shirt bundle. Read on for a few reviews of MONUMENTS’ Gnosis:
