Wage War at SOLD OUT Stage AE Show

Joining  A Day to Remember for their seventh sold out show at Stage AE was the notorious Wage War who just so happened to be the opening act for the night.  Most times with opening acts, no one is particularly paying attention or really even cares because they’re usually there for the headliner or maybe even the direct support.  Honestly, that was not the case this time around whether people knew who Wage War was or not, a lot of people left as a newfound fan of the hardcore/metalcore band.

Being the opening act is sometimes nerve racking, nice to get it over with but being the band that basically “sets the bar” could be the downfall for some if not most.  Luckily, Wage War took the bar and smashed it through the roof!  They weren’t afraid to go hard, strut their stuff, and have a good time.  Starting off their set was one of their biggest headbanging songs “Stitch” before jumping right into “Alive” and “Enemy.”

Wage War ended up playing ten songs which is quite surprising that they were allotted that much time, but with them being close friends with Jeremy McKinnon for starters, and the excellent performance they conjured up its not surprising anymore.  They played a solid mix though with their setlist as they played five songs from each of their two albums (setlist below).  Aside from their heavier songs, they also had some singalong songs that really got the crowd involved which was a nice change of pace for their set.  Like: Gravity, Don’t Let Me Fade Away, and Twenty One.

Luckily… if you missed Wage War this time around DO NOT WORRY because they will be returning to Pittsburgh this December with Oceans Ate Alaska, Gideon, Varials, and Loathe.  If you are a metalcore/hardcore fan then I really don’t have to go into any details at all besides just saying that this is the show for you without question.

The Accidentals @MrSmalls Theatre Pittsburgh

As part of their 2018 tour, The Accidentals will be performing with Keller Williams at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale on January 13th in celebration of their new record ‘Odyssey’.

NPR says the group carries “poetic ambiguity” and “idealistic undertones” through evocative lyrics, but to really get a feel of their energy check out their Yellow Couch Session here.

biography

With ODYSSEY, their extraordinary Sony Masterworks debut album, The Accidentals affirm their place among contemporary music’s most original and adventurous new bands. Multi-instrumentalists Sav Buist and Katie Larson – joined on stage and in the studio by drummer Michael Dause – have crafted a genre all their own, fueled by their uniquely limitless approach to musicality and songcraft. As its title suggests, ODYSSEY is built upon the foundation of real life experience through adversity and finding strength in vulnerability, their five-year journey having brought them to this cusp moment. Lyrically powerful songs like “Earthbound” and the potent title track see the band embracing their choice to lead an unconventional life with all its many surprising twists and turns.

Named among Yahoo Music’s “Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017,” The Accidentals’ adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, their shared influences bounced between classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock, and the obscure.

Dubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature, The Accidentals recorded and released a pair of independent albums in 2012 and 2013, the latter funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter. Their original songs revealed a band with wide-ranging influences but always true to their orchestral roots. National applause and attention followed, as did acclaimed collaborations with some fellow local artists and independent filmmakers. Other career highlights included scoring arrangements for a 75-piece orchestra to accompany them on their original songs as well as arranging pieces for an opera/dance production with Jennifer and Ryan Lott (Son Lux).

The past five years have seen The Accidentals perform over a thousand live shows, including headline dates, festival sets, and shared stages along such like-minded acts as Martin Sexton, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Bird, The Wailers, Joan Baez and others. 2015 saw the band embark on their first full-scale national tour, funded in part by an Indiegogo ‘online garage sale”. That year’s SXSW debut saw them hailed by Billboard for “displaying a genre-hopping range of influences and some smart songwriting skills to go with their abundant musical chops.”

Now, at long last, The Accidentals unveil their most compelling and finely honed work to date. Co-produced by Buist, Larson, and Dause with engineer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney, Guster, George Jones, Alison Krauss) at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Recording, ODYSSEY sees the band joined by such friends and fans as acoustic guitar maestra Kaki King, bassist – and fellow Michigander – Dominic John Davis (Jack White, Beck), Carbon Leaf guitarist Carter Gravatt, Keller Williams and The Decemberists’ Jenny Conlee, who spent three days in the studio alongside the band, lending her distinctive organ to a number of the album’s key tracks.

“It was a really collaborative process,” says Larson. “A lot of these songs had been hashed out at our live shows over the past few years, so we had a very strong idea of what we wanted in the arrangements. Jason helped us get outside the box with recording techniques, putting a fresh spin on the songs.”

“I’m so glad we’ve been able to collaborate with musicians who are so receptive to working and playing together,” Buist says. “They added their own artistry to some of the older songs, and it gave them new life.”

The Accidentals’ inviting spirit of shared creativity is perhaps best represented by the album’s audacious first single, “KW,” showcasing the inimitable guitar work of Keller Williams, whose own virtuosic genre-agnostic approach towards music making inspired the song in the first place.

“We were really lucky to tour with Keller,” Buist says. “We got to know him pretty well. He’s an amazing, genuine human and musician. He’s constantly defying genres, crossing lines, and creating collaborative projects. I wanted to capture some of that spirit in a song, so I wrote ‘KW.’ Keller caught wind of it at a show and played the song live with us. Later we added strings to his album and he offered to lay down guitar tracks. The dream came true – we ended up with a song that has a lot of his style and energy. We love that guy.”

From the orchestrated rock of “Memorial Day” to the album-closing “Ballad Tendered Gun” – surprisingly, The Accidentals’ first instrumental to be included on an LP – ODYSSEY is a strikingly dynamic work, both layered and unhurried, bittersweet yet lifeaffirming. Rich with literary references, whispers of nostalgia, and an unstoppable sense of forward motion, its songs were written independently by Buist and Larson and then arranged and refined by the group, creating a perfect yin/yang between individual introspection and dynamic cooperation, each artist bringing her own unique perspective to the process.

“We rely on each other to create a balance,” Buist says. “I think that’s the key to this band. Our styles of songwriting and arrangement are very different, so when they come together, they create this variation that couldn’t happen any other way.”

Multi-talented guitarist/keyboardist Jake Allen will join The Accidentals on stage as a special guest, filling in some of the colors and textures of ODYSSEY in live performances. The goal as ever is to experiment and experience, exploring new ideas and approaches while always staying true to their roots. With ODYSSEY, The Accidentals have conjured a truly one of its kind sound and vision, booming with free-thinking musicality, wisdom, and an understanding that growth is a process, not something that happens overnight. The Accidentals are already moving forward on their amazing journey, rolling down the windows on an open road towards someplace that’s both true and transcendent.

“I don’t think there are really any limits in terms of genre or instrumentation,” Larson says. “We just really enjoy making music that connects.”

“For us, it’s about the experience and collaboration and trying to learn as much as we can,” Buist says. “We want to be able to walk into any room with confidence in our craft, but in the end, we’re total nerds that just enjoy learning new things. Every day is an opportunity.”

PRIMITIVE MAN: Decibel Magazine Shares “Commerce” Video; North American Tour Dates With Bell Witch Confirmed

With lyrical themes ranging from political corruption, personal struggle, and the crumbling social climate facing the world today, Caustic serves as a cataclysmic soundtrack for a world gone awry.

PRIMITIVE MAN‘s music matches its name: a savage, sparse mix of death metal, blackened noise, and doom. The three-piece was formed in February of 2012 by Ethan Lee McCarthy and Jonathan Campos (all current and former members of Vermin Womb, Withered, Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire, Death Of Self, and Reproacher).
In October of 2012, the band recorded their debut LP Scorn at Flatline Audio with Dave Otero (Cephalic Carnage, Cobalt, Catheter, Clinging To The Trees Of A Forest Fire). Scorn was released as a collaboration between Throatruiner and Mordgrimm Records. The band followed up with a self-released three-song EP in February titled P/M. The unique metal hybridization of Scorn caught the attention of Relapse, who liked the record enough to sign the band and reissue the full-length in the summer 2013. Dubbed a, “totally malignant sounding record and one that will consume you whole if you’re not careful,” by Cvlt Nation and crowned the, “best worst thing that has ever happened to you,” in an 8/10 review from Metal Hammer, Scorn found PRIMITIVE MAN celebrating a slow-roasted apocalypse through seven suffocating hymns of hatred, disease, and sonic deviance. The record put the band on the proverbial map for many listeners, and enabled PRIMITIVE MAN to embark on a relentless touring schedule that would soon see the band playing live shows across the US, Europe, Japan, and Southeast Asia in the company of such acts as Hexis, Reproacher, Fister, Celeste, Opium Lord, and Mammoth Grinder. PRIMITIVE MAN also played Denver Black Sky in 2013 alongside Relapse brethren Dying Fetus, Exhumed, Skinless, Iron Reagan, Call Of The Void, and Weekend Nachos.
All of guitarist/vocalist Ethan McCarthy’s projects have been prolific, and PRIMITIVE MAN is no exception – the band released four splits between 2013 and 2015, and dropped another bombshell of nihility in 2015 with its Relapse EP Home Is Where The Hatred Is. The EP was well-received by publications including Metal Injection, MetalSucks, Revolver, and Exclaim!, the latter of which stated, “unapologetically bleak and permeated by loathing and hostility, Home Is Where The Hatred Is will either leave you wanting more or contemplating teetering off a ledge.”
Despite their primeval, bludgeoning approach, PRIMITIVE MAN wouldn’t exist without their savage awareness of modern humanity: simultaneously old and new, atavistic and groundbreaking, PRIMITIVE MAN stands to redefine current conceptions of hope, faith, and metal music. Years of writing on tour and the addition of drummer Joe Linden sparked a black flame in PRIMITIVE MANmolding the band’s second full-length offering, Caustic set for release this fall via Relapse Records.

Jonathan Campos – bass

Rancid & Dropkick Murphys – From Boston To Berkeley Tour in Pittsburgh @StageAE 8/2

Along with full sets from Rancid and the Murphys, the two bands will come together onstage each night for a special joint encore.

Rancid and Dropkick Murphys have a long and important history together. Back in 1997, Rancid‘s Lars Frederiksen came across a copy of Dropkick Murphys‘ original EP at a friend’s house. He turned it over to his bandmate and Hellcat Records president Tim Armstrong, who quickly snatched up the band for his new label.

Rancid is looking forward to hitting the road with our brothers the Dropkick Murphys,” says Rancid‘s Tim Armstrong. “We will end the night with DKM and us playing songs together. Look out for The Bouncing SoulsThe SelecterKevin Seconds and Jake Burns to be on certain shows. SEE YA IN THE PIT!”

Rancid‘s Lars Frederiksen says, “It’s a long time coming with these two bands touring together. There is so much history between both of us that it should make for a great tour. We look forward to seeing all of our friends and family out there.”

Dropkick Murphys‘ Ken Casey comments, “This is a dream come true for Dropkick Murphys. Hopefully all the people coming to the shows will feel the same way. Rancid gave us our break — Timsigning us to his label, Lars producing our early albums…so much history and great memories. Now, literally sharing the stage together every night. This tour is going to destroy all others this summer!!!!”

The roots of Rancid are traceable back to Operation Ivy at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, CA. circa 1987. After Operation Ivy broke up, Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman went on to form Rancid. In 1993, they signed with longtime producer, and label founder, Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion and Epitaph Records, who would stay on with the band for the next 20 years as the band’s producer. Rancid (Tim ArmstrongLars FrederiksenMatt FreemanBranden Steineckert) has stayed independent. They have their own independent booking agent, they’re on an independent record label, Hellcat/Epitaph, and they make their own t-shirts. 2017 will see the release of Rancid‘s ninth studio album.

Dropkick Murphys are touring in support of their 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory album, released through the band’s own Born & Bred Records earlier this year. The album debuted at #8 on the Billboard Top 200 and was the #1 independently released album. There’s a feeling of purpose throughout the album, influenced by the band’s work with The Claddagh Fund, a charity the band established in 2009 to help support addiction recovery as well as children’s and veterans’ organizations. Dropkick MurphysAl BarrTim BrennanKen CaseyJeff DaRosaMatt KellyJames Lynch—are hands-on in raising funds, mentoring, and lending a helping hand with veterans, youth sports, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Many of the songs reflect these experiences, and the band’s sadness, anger and dismay at the opiate epidemic ravaging the country — in particular, Boston and New England — and also their feeling of pride and optimism at the sight of those who have turned their lives around. Dropkick Murphys have become ambassadors for their city. In Boston, it seems like everybody knows someone connected to the band whether by blood, friendship, or the time they shared a brew at a Bruins game. They’ve built a legacy that does Beantown proud.

Show Review: Switchfoot and Relient K – Stage AE

Switchfoot. Relient K. No this isn’t the early 2000’s. It’s 2016. This also isn’t another show review about two aging American Alternative rock groups. Here we have bands that frankly, have yet to age.

Switchfoot and Relient K collectively boast 30 plus years of touring and performing. The similar nature of each group is what has brought them together on this tour. For the bands, the music and emotion follow similar paths.  Uniquely, the two groups share a strong Christian rock influence. Each also seems to have made it a habit living atop the Christian Rock music charts year after year. Together the bands have 1$ from each ticket sold on the tour supporting Bro-Am which supports local kids, the homeless, and at-risk and disadvantaged youth.

switchfoot-1-14

The stage was set with a white buffalo statue, scenic forest-cabin background, and coca-cola cooler next to a white piano and 70’s era yellow lawn chair. All were tied together with a faux tree and grill. Frontman Matt Thiessen was the perfect completion to this odd motif. Wearing khakis, a white button-down, and a yellow jacket. His presence left no doubt of being old, lame, or unhip.

switchfoot-1-5

Thiessen is a shaggy-haired 36-year-old. You’d think though with his on-stage presence he was no more than 25. He matched energetic riffs behind the piano with perfect execution. Relient K opened with their piano-infused song “Local Construction” off of their new 2016 album “Air for Free.” The love was apparent through connecting smiles with one of the last original members Hoppes on lead guitar. The veteran duo that often laughed, humanized the band as average people just doing what they love. I couldn’t help but smile seeing real happiness onstage.

Is he really 36? No way. This energy is reserved for a younger persona. The end of the set met an unexpecting crowd with the lead singer of Switchfoot, Jon Foreman, joining Thiessen on stage. The two began an emotional duet with Relient K’s 2007 “Deathbed.” A stunned crowd gave an emotional farewell as Foreman exited. Switchfoot’s Foreman had the crowd ready for the impressive showmanship that his band had ahead.

Flashing led’s in a wave of lights glistened as a countdown began on a screen above the stage. A massive roar followed the end of the countdown. Effectively backing up the build-up from Relient K. switchfoot-1-19Holy Water,” the Looking for America Tour intro, started in perfect timing. Our leather jacket wrapped, fedora-topped Foreman bolting out stage center just in time for the uptempo crashing drums stage center.
The immediate transition to one of their biggest hits came next with “Meant to live” boasting an aggressive sound paired with uptempo lyrics. Switchfoot’s Tim Foreman on bass, Chad Butler on drums, and guitarists Jerome Fontamillas and Drew Shirley weren’t about to let expectations down. A band sounding better live than on their albums electronically is such a great surprise here.

The rest of their set was a professional high octane experience. Each song blended beautifully to the next. Slow songs had emotion as Foreman reached to the crowd. We have an artist here that made it very clear to share the love with his fans. You felt as if he wanted to give every last person there his thanks through his acknowledgment of the fans. Switchfoot ended the set just as strong as they began.

switchfoot-1-26

Much of the crowd consisted of 30 somethings listening to their favorite college or high school heart-throbs. Though a set of Christian acts, whether here for the message or music you left fully satisfied.

The Looking for America Tour has something for everyone. You leave feeling satisfied knowing that concert ticket was worth every last penny.  These are two bands that keep the excitement alive through their onstage presences and atmosphere. Fizzled out? No chance. Switchfoot and Relient K aren’t close to stopping. Be sure to catch them nearby before the tour ends Dec 6.

LAYNE at Smiling Moose in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, August 27th

LAYNE (sounds like: The 1975, Halsey, PVRIS) is a Los Angeles based indie pop-rock duo made up of lead-singer/guitarist Layne Putnam and drummer Alex Rosca, who are set to release their debut EP entitled The Black Hillsout August 26th.
For a taste of their live performance, check out their recent session on Jam In The Van: http://www.jaminthevan.com/band/layne/
And check out her recent feature for Paste Magazine’s ‘Best Of What’s Next’: https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/07/layne-the-best-of-whats-next.html
The band has created quite a stir online through their viral hit singles “Good” and “Somebody”, already surpassing 1 million Spotify plays and landing them Top 15 spots on two key Spotify/Billboard charts (U.S. Spotify Viral 50 and Global Viral 50) and a crazy amount of Spotify playlists such as New Music Friday, New Talent (French), and What’s Next.
You can definitely hear their musical influences in their music itself, but the band finds their true inspiration through this world they created called ‘The In Between’.
This world, as they described to me, is this dark, foresty, dystopian-esque place in their minds where they go to write their music, and where the lonely can be lonely together. It’s how Layne and Alex initially bonded and it’s how Layne in the band was able to write her hits like “Good” and “Somebody“.
LAYNE is proud to announce that the band’s highly anticipated debut EP The Black Hills is set to release Friday, August 26th.  The five track EP features the band’s signature dystopian indie-pop sound that was previously portrayed in their viral hits “Somebody” and “Good”, which have received over 1 million Spotify streams.

“The Black Hills EP is a collection of songs written over the past year and an introduction to LAYNE,” says lead singer-songwriter, Layne Putnam. “It is a place where we can be alone together. Welcome to the in-between.” Within the EP, Putnam performed/recorded all the instruments on each track and also co-produced it alongside Los Angeles engineer/producer, Devon Corey.

In writing the EP, Putnam was inspired by her surrounding environment, from the busy streets of Los Angeles to the ominous Black Hills mountain range in her beloved hometown of Rapid City, South Dakota. The dynamic of these environments has shaped the sound in this EP to bridge the depth of her lyrics, with opposing themes of loneliness and community, peace and war, and love gained and lost.  Tracks like the catchy “Topical” and “Boys Do” showcase Putnam’s uncanny ability to write strong hooks and choruses, while tracks like “You” and “Phone” embody her gift for pop melodies that songwriters work their entire lives to achieve. Putnam also made an effort to subtly immortalize her home into her music, Putnam recorded the sound of her childhood lake into songs like “Twuh.”

In promotion of the upcoming release, LAYNE will be playing numerous cities around the US through the end of the year, making stops in New York, Chicago, Denver, and Kansas City at the end of the month, and further give fans an introduction into ‘the in-between’. More cities and dates to be announced.

Check out show dates below along with the EP track listings. The EP and upcoming show dates are available for review upon request. LAYNE will also be available for press in NYC on August 29th.

AXS TV’S PANEL OF EXPERTS PREDICTED EIGHT OF THE TOP GRAMMY® CATEGORIES

LOS ANGELES – Jan. 22, 2014 – AXS TV today predicted eight of the GRAMMY®’s top categories on the channel’s first-ever GRAMMY®PREDICTION SPECIAL. Hosted by AXS TV’s Ryan Stout, the hour-long LIVE event featured expert opinions from renowned music critic Bob Lefsetz, hip-hop newsmaker DJ Skee, and research entrepreneur John Dick of CivicScience. Using polling conducted from the next-generation data mining company CivicScience, AXS TV’s panel of experts debated CivicScience’s findings, while adding their own thoughts and predictions on eight of the GRAMMY’s top categories including Best Rock Album; Best Rap Album; Best Country Album and Album of the Year, among others.

The SPECIAL predicted massive wins for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, whose singles—such as “Thrift Shop” and “Same Love”—rocketed the hit-making duo into super-stardom, and made them easy favorites for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album, and the coveted Album of the Year. Best Rock Album was awarded to Kings of Leon for the 2013 release MECHANICAL BULL, while Taylor Swift’s RED took home honors for Best Country Album. And acclaimed newcomer Lorde’s hit single “Royals” was crowned Song of the Year and Record of the Year, with Robin Thicke, T.I., and Pharrell Williams winning Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the irreverent summertime favorite “Blurred Lines.”

The panel of experts were extremely opinionated tonight. Lefsetz and Skee had a spirited debate about the Best Rap Album; Lefsetz favored Drake while Skee supported the merits of Best New Artist nominee Kendrick Lamar: bit.ly/1dQyxtD

When it came to discussing the Best Country Album, Lefsetz had strong criticism for Taylor Swift. While he believes she will win the GRAMMY, Lefsetz actually favors someone else: bit.ly/1dx81zr

To predict the winners, CivicScience used a proprietary method, analyzing results to surveys conducted online among a mix of music enthusiasts and general consumers. CivicScience’s method has been lauded by leading academics, most recently for the company’s impressive forecasting of the 2013 Oscars. For this year’s GRAMMY predictions, nearly 200,000 surveys were included in the company’s analysis. Voters were able to submit their choices right up to the show’s premiere.

Office Romance To Release I Love The Holidays Featuring Guest Vocalist Alex Winston

Office Romance is the writing team of SYD BUTLER, SETH JABOUR of LES SAVY FAV and Butler’s long time partner AMY CARLSON (Currently of Blue Bloods on CBS)

This 3 song EP, entitled “I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS” represents Amy’s love for holiday music and highlights a different musical approach for Syd and Seth.

Syd Butler says “Writing a holiday song was harder than we expected. On one hand you have a map and on the other hand you know you can’t stray to far off the path. At the end of the day is was a great challenge and a lot of fun to break out of the post punk/art genre to write a song or style I was not very comfortable writing.”

Seth Jabour adds, “Syd and I have always had a great song writing chemistry, so I was excited at the challenge of applying our talents to a new genre and style of songwriting. We were very fortunate to work with some incredibly talented people on these songs, and I think that comes across through the performances. Although this took some adjusting (art rock, this is not), I never doubted that we’d succeed in writing meaningful and catchy holiday tunes. Having Amy involved was a treat, as lyrics are not my thing (I’m surprised I managed to even type this.) Overall I found the process to be fun, frustrating at times, and ultimately rewarding. I look forward to what’s next for Office Romance.”

Amy agrees, “It was a thrill to work with Syd as well as Seth, whose music I have admired for years.” Carlson, a true lover of holiday music, had a blast, drew lyrical inspiration from the classics ranging from Bing to Billie.

“I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS” and “HOLIDAYS AREN’T THE SAME WITHOUT YOU” are performed by ALEX WINSTON.
