HOAN (pronounced h-o-n-e) Sept 27th at Spirit.

Hoan formed in 2015 with the intention of exploring sonic terrain without inhibition.

Since then, they went on two north American tours and played over 100 shows in Canada and USA including festivals such as SXSW 2017, CMW, Pop Montreal and M for Montreal.

Their work gives subtle nods to the darker sides of new wave adding an understated melodic intelligence that sometime can remind of bands like Deerhunter and Broadcast.

Their debut release, “Modern Phase”, was released on April 28th 2017 on Fantôme Records.

Concert Coverage: Anti-Flag “Rock Against the TPP” road show @MrSmalls in Millvale

Pittsburgh’s own politically active punk band Anti-Flag brought the “Rock Against the TPP” road show to Mr. Smalls in Millvale Thursday night. The Rock Against the TPP Tour is being organized by Fight for the Future along with Firebrand Records, the new social justice infused record label co-founded by Tom Morello and Ryan Harvey, acting as the tour’s artistic partner. The road show is sponsored and co-organized by a diverse coalition of groups fighting against the corporate power grab that is the Trans-Pacific Partnership. According to the tour press release, “The TPP has little to do with trade, but instead grants multinational corporations extraordinary new powers to threaten jobs, the environment, affordable medicine, free speech, and food safety.” The Rock Against the TPP tour brings together a broad coalition of supporters including digital rights groups, labor unions, environmental groups, and small businesses to mobilize opposition to what is viewed as a dangerous, anti-democratic deal. “

Pittsburgh’s own Amy Rigby ‘Diary of a Mod Housewife’ vinyl reissue and tour dates

image003Amy Rigby’s ‘Diary of a Mod Housewife’ is a modern classic. It has never been available on vinyl. This will change Nov 18th when this wonderful album finally gets the vinyl release it deserves. To celebrate she’s playing her hometown of Pittsburgh. Let me know if you want to go.

 

Amy Rigby established herself as a solo artist in 1996 with debut album Diary Of A Mod Housewife, but had already been writing and performing her honest, intelligent and instantly-memorable songs for years as a member of early NYC alt-country band Last Roundup and girl group the Shams. Over the last two decades she has toured the US, UK and Europe and released four more acclaimed solo albums, as well as three duo records with her husband Wreckless Eric. Nov 18th, Diary Of A Mod Housewife will be released on vinyl for the first time and Amy is touring to revisit the classics and play new songs from her upcoming solo album due out next year. Interview: pop-punk emo band from Canada, Marianas Trench

Marianas Trench: the pop-punk emo band from Canada that has been around for the better part of this millennium.  The group has gone through its ups and downs, with the most recent of downs resulting in the high that lead to the creation of Astoria.  The band has been touring for about a year, and has gone through the 10 year anniversary of their album, Fix Me.  In a recent email interview, we had the chance to talk to Mariana’s Trench guitarist Matt Webb about Astoria, the 10 year anniversary of Fix Me, and what it is like to tour around the world with the other members of the band.

Webb remarks that it did not feel like 10 years since the release of Fix me.  He also notes that the band’s sound has very much evolved since then.  He says, “We have a lot of respect for artists that continue to reinvent themselves, it seems to be an integral part of a lengthy career in the music business.  For that reason you’ll notice that Astoria doesn’t sound much like Fix Me.”  (Webb, 2016) The band has taken on a very 80s sound, basing the latest album, loosely, on “Coming of Age Adventure Movies.”  One such movie being The Goonies which takes place in the town Astoria.  Matt talks about how he and the rest of the group keep the 80s vibe going on tour.  He says the band watches a different 80s movie on the bus every night.  He admits that they do find other ways of keeping it up as well, stating, “I find you can keep the 80s vibe going as long as you’re wearing tight pants, rocking a keytar, and exposing your man-chest whenever possible.” (Webb, 2016)

As mentioned, the band has been on tour for about a year, travelling to multiple countries outside of Canada.  This means keeping occupied with activities, that, according to Matt, usually involve food and disinfecting the tour bus.  The band also stays at some interesting places on tour.  They find everything from dead rats in showers to kind old ladies offering to do laundry.  He says this doesn’t usually affect their shows though.  “We’re gonna rock the f*&k out anywhere we go, but somedays we smell better than others.” (Webb, 2016)  The band truly believes that the travel is well worth it, as Matt mentions the incredibly rewarding feeling of packing a venue.  An incredibly rewarding feeling is generated from filling a venue with fans that know every single word to their songs.  Lastly, he left with some advice for young musician who look forward to one day celebrating 10 year anniversaries for well-known albums.  Matt says, “Concentrate on writing badass songs.  Then work as hard as you possibly can to get them in the hands of as many people as possible.  Whether it’s through endless touring, online hustling, hand-billing, yelling them from the top of a mountain, ain’t nobody gonna get big if no one hears your shit.” (Webb, 2016)

Marianas Trench headlined at Mr.  Small’s Theatre in July of this year.  This was the second time they have played at the venue in 2016.  They are currently touring in the United Kingdom.

What if we had a digital machine that could access the entirety of Canadian folk music and generate new yet hyper-authentic compositions from the source data? Thanks to this exciting collaboration between Canadian song collector Dr. Henry Adam Svec (The CFL SessionsFolk Songs of Canada Now) and Czech programmer Mirek Plíhal (Všechny Milí Lidé), there is no longer any need to wonder.
An intelligent archive is already an achievement. Yet, LIVINGSTON only produces transcriptions of words and melodies, and so our engineers also needed to put together a band. Fronted by Svec himself and featuring Misha Bower (Bruce Peninsula), Marshall Bureau (Octoberman, The Pinecones), J.J. Ipsen (Hayden, Jim Guthrie), Andrew Penner (Sunparlour Players), and more, these human musicians have breathed life into LIVINGSTON’s brilliantly cold calculations; from rough hollers and stomps to smooth-country croons, from the sparse sounds of the field to the sparkle of Andy Magoffin’s House of Miracles Studio, Artificially Intelligent Folk Songs of Canada, Vol. 1 documents the limits and possibilities of Canadian folksong—a record as wide and as varied as our land and/or the internet.

REVIEW: New hip-hop album “Zero Gravity” from CeasRock shows potential

Canadian based rapper CeasRock’s new album Zero Gravity (free download) show his ability to lyrically stretch in different directions, but more importantly it shows a lot of potential. Zero Gravity, produced and mixed by 514IndoRecordz, starts out of the gates with the ascending title track that strikes of the higher dimensional, elevated hip-hop the likes of Hieroglyphics, Blackalicious, and Jurassic 5. The track production shines, adding the right atmosphere for the lyrical content and delivery. As an intro, the album seems to be headed for a spacey, conscious hip-hop journey.

However, the next few tracks seem to go into much more familiar waters. The production quality is still on point, but the sound comes back into the current more Southern-style rapid high-hat, slow and low beat sound. Lyrically while Ceas stays quick on the delivery, the creativity and unpredictability of his word play doesn’t reach back up to the promise of the opener. That said, while the album dips slightly it comes back up with the quietly cool “Jones” whose production nods to the warm classic R&B tinged hip-hop of Common’s “Be” era Kanye.

Toward the end of the album, Ceas comes back into interesting waters again with both the very conscious “Real Life Pt. 1” and classic sounding “10.5”. Real Life finds Ceas bringing both introspection and social commentary into the light with a solid, classically true sounding hip-hop beat to back him. Then on the closer 10.5 produced by Deejay IZ, things come back full swing into the elevation and creativity of the opener. It nods to the more genuine element of hip-hop, being true MC’ing which focuses more on content and delivery rather than catchy hooks and cultural trends.

Ceas is quoted saying about the album: “ZERO GRAVITY” represents the continuous ascension process that I go through as an artist. Focused on a modern style of production, “ZERO GRAVITY” will serve a catalyst to “FREQUENCEAS LP” which will be the 2nd instalment of the 2 part project. The goal is to show my versatility and ability to deliver quality sound within a cohesive piece of work, while still respecting the standards I hold as an emcee.” CeasRock does seem to hold high standards as a MC, and he really shines when moving into the more elevated, conscious direction of his creativity. Zero Gravity is definitely worth a listen, and CeasRock is one to watch. Stand out tracks: Zero Gravity, Jones. Real Life, and 10.5.

CRYPTOPSY releases best of collection, ‘The Best Of Us Bleed’

Canada’s masters of brutality CRYPTOPSY have released their new devastating 2CD/digital download “best of” collection today in North America. Programmatically entitled The Best Of Us Bleed, this collection gathers 32 stunning songs in approximately 140 minutes of playing time, including 3 exclusive, newer studio songs, several rare live/demo/cover/bonus tracks as well as selected cuts from the first 6 studio albums by these technical death metal pioneers. The striking cover artwork of this compilation was designed by Toshihiro Egawa (SUICIDE SILENCE, KRISIUN, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, etc.) and the booklet contains extensive biographical liner notes by Adrien Begrand (Decibel Magazine).

In the Chicago land area, there was a metal magazine called ‘Inner Source’ that featured a CD sampler with each issue. One issue came with ‘Crown of Horns’ on it and it really blew me away. This same sampler was also the first time I heard DYING FETUS, so it was a pretty good issue. I was really into Black Metal at the time and pretty burnt out on Death Metal, but ‘Crown of Horns’ really stood out at the time. It was pretty extreme for ’96 and Lord Worm was a very unique vocalist as well. ‘Crown of Horns’ was really catchy and showed what ‘None So Vile’ had to offer. Bison B.C.’s ‘Lovelessness’ Will Put Them On Your Love List

They hit you like a shovel, already caked in mud and blood and piss, slamming your brain. Bottom basement guitars rooted down deep with drum and bass rhythm and riff on top of heavy riff on top of heavier riff. Based in the love of all things metal and good, born out of the Sabbaths, and Panteras, and Soundgardens, and Melvins of the world. They are dirty, fast, drop D, pounding, pulsating, back to basics, metal up your ass, all that is beautiful and disgusting about metal that we love.
‘An Old Friend’ opens up ‘Lovelessness’ and has no reverence to your need for codling. It thrives on your hate and anger and fist pounding frustration. If you are at the edge you have just been given a hearty push as you hear the maniacal laugh in your descent. Bison B.C. creates layers of patterns that have a texture of grime and excrement polished with a bit of smut for good measure. Reminiscent of the works of Mastodon and their kin, Bison B.C. has the potential to reach that bands’ level as their fans will surely tell you, and has their own style to add to the genre of ‘mind metal’.

‘Anxiety Puke/Lovelessness’ is the second track on the effort and has a throb of punk sensibility reminiscent of Black Flag, but then flips itself over and takes root in old metal magic. Gorgeous guitars blend over one another and their notes hang and bump into one another with malice punctuated by agonizing vocals. Lyrically, the thematic of ‘Lovelessness’ are glaringly clear, this is no R.E.M. ‘Happy Shiny People’ unless Slayer covered the tune and changed the lyrics to deal with destruction, death, and desolation. The “psalms of suffering” continue with ‘Last and First Things’. Starting on a slower tone than its predecessors on the disc, it quickly pulls the listener in and puts a choke hold on their eardrums. Their is a dichotomy present here of complex yet simplistic measures that are burrowed in familiarity but have a twisting, festering, invasive new passion that is infectious; it’s as if the body has lost control and must now sway and pound in homage to the music before it.
‘Blood Music’ continues the barrage of the senses and will make any sensible metalhead pray that Bison B.C. hits their town. They have built quite a reputation for their live show, touring with the likes of Baroness, Priestess, and Ghenghis Tron. Hard hiiting and unsympathetic in its brutality, ‘Blood Music’ could be the best description of Bison’s sound yet. Next up is ‘Clozapine Dream’ named after the drug oft prescribed to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. The drug is typically used as a last resort, thus fitting very neatly into the feel and tone of Bison B.C.’s third release on Metal Blade. The cohesiveness of the music with the lyrical content puts this accomplishment on par with the bands’ cohorts such as Between the Buried and Me, Baroness, Becoming the Archetype, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. To conclude their latest is ‘Finally Asleep’ that trudges in with a military like beat to put to rest any doubts of the true weight of the material, bloody and beaten from the experience, scarred by pure existence, and disturbed beyond repair. It is the perfect cap off to what amounts to an amazing piece of sludge metal that will rot in your brain, devour your veins, and haunt your soul.

Braids, the Canadian experimental pop group who released Native Speaker in 2011, have reinvented themselves in the making of their second full length.
