HOAN (pronounced h-o-n-e) Sept 27th at Spirit.

Hoan formed in 2015 with the intention of exploring sonic terrain without inhibition.

Since then, they went on two north American tours and played over 100 shows in Canada and USA including festivals such as SXSW 2017, CMW, Pop Montreal and M for Montreal.

Their work gives subtle nods to the darker sides of new wave adding an understated melodic intelligence that sometime can remind of bands like Deerhunter and Broadcast.

Their debut release, “Modern Phase”, was released on April 28th 2017 on Fantôme Records.

Concert Coverage: Anti-Flag “Rock Against the TPP” road show @MrSmalls in Millvale

Pittsburgh’s own politically active punk band Anti-Flag brought the “Rock Against the TPP” road show to Mr. Smalls in Millvale Thursday night. The Rock Against the TPP Tour is being organized by Fight for the Future along with Firebrand Records, the new social justice infused record label co-founded by Tom Morello and Ryan Harvey, acting as the tour’s artistic partner. The road show is sponsored and co-organized by a diverse coalition of groups fighting against the corporate power grab that is the Trans-Pacific Partnership. According to the tour press release, “The TPP has little to do with trade, but instead grants multinational corporations extraordinary new powers to threaten jobs, the environment, affordable medicine, free speech, and food safety.” The Rock Against the TPP tour brings together a broad coalition of supporters including digital rights groups, labor unions, environmental groups, and small businesses to mobilize opposition to what is viewed as a dangerous, anti-democratic deal. “

Interview: pop-punk emo band from Canada, Marianas Trench

Marianas Trench: the pop-punk emo band from Canada that has been around for the better part of this millennium.  The group has gone through its ups and downs, with the most recent of downs resulting in the high that lead to the creation of Astoria.  The band has been touring for about a year, and has gone through the 10 year anniversary of their album, Fix Me.  In a recent email interview, we had the chance to talk to Mariana’s Trench guitarist Matt Webb about Astoria, the 10 year anniversary of Fix Me, and what it is like to tour around the world with the other members of the band.

Webb remarks that it did not feel like 10 years since the release of Fix me.  He also notes that the band’s sound has very much evolved since then.  He says, “We have a lot of respect for artists that continue to reinvent themselves, it seems to be an integral part of a lengthy career in the music business.  For that reason you’ll notice that Astoria doesn’t sound much like Fix Me.”  (Webb, 2016) The band has taken on a very 80s sound, basing the latest album, loosely, on “Coming of Age Adventure Movies.”  One such movie being The Goonies which takes place in the town Astoria.  Matt talks about how he and the rest of the group keep the 80s vibe going on tour.  He says the band watches a different 80s movie on the bus every night.  He admits that they do find other ways of keeping it up as well, stating, “I find you can keep the 80s vibe going as long as you’re wearing tight pants, rocking a keytar, and exposing your man-chest whenever possible.” (Webb, 2016)

As mentioned, the band has been on tour for about a year, travelling to multiple countries outside of Canada.  This means keeping occupied with activities, that, according to Matt, usually involve food and disinfecting the tour bus.  The band also stays at some interesting places on tour.  They find everything from dead rats in showers to kind old ladies offering to do laundry.  He says this doesn’t usually affect their shows though.  “We’re gonna rock the f*&k out anywhere we go, but somedays we smell better than others.” (Webb, 2016)  The band truly believes that the travel is well worth it, as Matt mentions the incredibly rewarding feeling of packing a venue.  An incredibly rewarding feeling is generated from filling a venue with fans that know every single word to their songs.  Lastly, he left with some advice for young musician who look forward to one day celebrating 10 year anniversaries for well-known albums.  Matt says, “Concentrate on writing badass songs.  Then work as hard as you possibly can to get them in the hands of as many people as possible.  Whether it’s through endless touring, online hustling, hand-billing, yelling them from the top of a mountain, ain’t nobody gonna get big if no one hears your shit.” (Webb, 2016)

Marianas Trench headlined at Mr.  Small’s Theatre in July of this year.  This was the second time they have played at the venue in 2016.  They are currently touring in the United Kingdom.

Interview: Stephanie Connell

Multi-Platinum selling Canadian pop-rockers Marianas Trench have released their official video for “This Means War” – the track is off their most recent album, Astoria. Check out the video below.

LIVINGSTON presents Artificially Intelligent Folks Songs of Canada Vol. 1

Featuring work produced by the sentient database LIVINGSTONArtificially Intelligent Folk Songs of Canada, Vol. 1 is the culmination of years of research in both Canadian folklore and computer science. What if we had a digital machine that could access the entirety of Canadian folk music and generate new yet hyper-authentic compositions from the source data? Thanks to this exciting collaboration between Canadian song collector Dr. Henry Adam Svec (The CFL SessionsFolk Songs of Canada Now) and Czech programmer Mirek Plíhal (Všechny Milí Lidé), there is no longer any need to wonder.
An intelligent archive is already an achievement. Yet, LIVINGSTON only produces transcriptions of words and melodies, and so our engineers also needed to put together a band. Fronted by Svec himself and featuring Misha Bower (Bruce Peninsula), Marshall Bureau (Octoberman, The Pinecones), J.J. Ipsen (Hayden, Jim Guthrie), Andrew Penner (Sunparlour Players), and more, these human musicians have breathed life into LIVINGSTON’s brilliantly cold calculations; from rough hollers and stomps to smooth-country croons, from the sparse sounds of the field to the sparkle of Andy Magoffin’s House of Miracles Studio, Artificially Intelligent Folk Songs of Canada, Vol. 1 documents the limits and possibilities of Canadian folksong—a record as wide and as varied as our land and/or the internet.
Download the music for free (or for a small contribution) via www.folksingularity.com, where you can also access tour dates and the FAQ, and stay tuned for Vol. 2 (sung by Olenka Krakus) and Vol. 3 (sung by Mathias Kom).

REVIEW: New hip-hop album “Zero Gravity” from CeasRock shows potential

Canadian based rapper CeasRock’s new album Zero Gravity (free download) show his ability to lyrically stretch in different directions, but more importantly it shows a lot of potential. Zero Gravity, produced and mixed by 514IndoRecordz, starts out of the gates with the ascending title track that strikes of the higher dimensional, elevated hip-hop the likes of Hieroglyphics, Blackalicious, and Jurassic 5. The track production shines, adding the right atmosphere for the lyrical content and delivery. As an intro, the album seems to be headed for a spacey, conscious hip-hop journey.

However, the next few tracks seem to go into much more familiar waters. The production quality is still on point, but the sound comes back into the current more Southern-style rapid high-hat, slow and low beat sound. Lyrically while Ceas stays quick on the delivery, the creativity and unpredictability of his word play doesn’t reach back up to the promise of the opener. That said, while the album dips slightly it comes back up with the quietly cool “Jones” whose production nods to the warm classic R&B tinged hip-hop of Common’s “Be” era Kanye.

Toward the end of the album, Ceas comes back into interesting waters again with both the very conscious “Real Life Pt. 1” and classic sounding “10.5”. Real Life finds Ceas bringing both introspection and social commentary into the light with a solid, classically true sounding hip-hop beat to back him. Then on the closer 10.5 produced by Deejay IZ, things come back full swing into the elevation and creativity of the opener. It nods to the more genuine element of hip-hop, being true MC’ing which focuses more on content and delivery rather than catchy hooks and cultural trends.

Ceas is quoted saying about the album: “ZERO GRAVITY” represents the continuous ascension process that I go through as an artist. Focused on a modern style of production, “ZERO GRAVITY” will serve a catalyst to “FREQUENCEAS LP” which will be the 2nd instalment of the 2 part project. The goal is to show my versatility and ability to deliver quality sound within a cohesive piece of work, while still respecting the standards I hold as an emcee.” CeasRock does seem to hold high standards as a MC, and he really shines when moving into the more elevated, conscious direction of his creativity. Zero Gravity is definitely worth a listen, and CeasRock is one to watch. Stand out tracks: Zero Gravity, Jones. Real Life, and 10.5.

About:Toronto, Canada’s high-energy, modern thrash monsters Fatality have been cranking out wise-cracking, beer-drenched nightmares together since 2003. Known for their wild, riotous live performances and their peerless work ethic, they have been independently booking and promoting their own shows, creating great merch, touring North America, and making some great tunes along the way. Few bands embody the DIY spirit as fully as Fatality consistently do, and no other bands have as much fun working their asses off.

Fatality’s debut effort, Beers From The Grave, was an irreverent, horror-themed album that eschewed seriousness in favour of hard living and good times. Decibel Magazine quipped that, on Beers From The Grave,“solos fly with reckless abandon, the bass is audible and practically so are the beers being cracked open. These guys must have awesome parties.” Hellbound.ca stated that Fatality are “a bundle of crass, explosive, obnoxiously positive energy spewing beer and shrapnel.” Part homage to classic zombie apocalypse horror and part retro-thrash ruckus, Beers From The Grave was an exciting, riotously messy debut.

After supporting Beers From The Grave with East coast Canadian tours, and being invited to share the stage with the likes of Exodus, Municipal Waste, Holy Grail and Razor, the thrash rockers went back to the studio and emerged with still more new material. Three rough-and-tumble, irresistibly catchy singles — “T.F.E.S.”,“Uppercut” and “Hammerfist” — were bundled together as a free EP. While most bands would have simply released a free record and called it a day, Fatality supported their singles with North American tours, winning hearts, destroying livers and splitting eardrums along the way. After those adventures, Fatality went into a period of hiatus. They emerged from this creative cocoon and re-instated their original drummer, Mason LeVon (brother to guitarist and vocalist Spencer LeVon, who replaced longtime friend and skinsman Andrew Suarez), and new musical vision. In early 2012, the band began writing a brand-new full-length, unquestionably their most ambitious project to date.

Smarter, stronger and musically tighter than ever, Fatality are now ready to unleash their sophomore album on their adoring public. Entitled Psychonaut, their new record is at once a darker and more mature effort, with more complex arrangements and sophisticated concepts that still retains their trademark energy and commitment to drunken mayhem. Tracks like “Thoughts Collide” and “Before The Collapse” delve deep into the sodden minds of their creators, bubbling with the strange alchemy of pop culture. CRYPTOPSY releases best of collection, ‘The Best Of Us Bleed’

Canada’s masters of brutality CRYPTOPSY have released their new devastating 2CD/digital download “best of” collection today in North America. Programmatically entitled The Best Of Us Bleed, this collection gathers 32 stunning songs in approximately 140 minutes of playing time, including 3 exclusive, newer studio songs, several rare live/demo/cover/bonus tracks as well as selected cuts from the first 6 studio albums by these technical death metal pioneers. The striking cover artwork of this compilation was designed by Toshihiro Egawa (SUICIDE SILENCE, KRISIUN, ABIGAIL WILLIAMS, etc.) and the booklet contains extensive biographical liner notes by Adrien Begrand (Decibel Magazine).

As a special tribute to the band, various members of the music community have come together to assemble a CRYPTOPSY Spotify playlist (with commentary). Colin Davis of VILE says this about the band in general: “This is a band that was pretty shocking when they first came out because they incorporated a number of new qualities that really made them stand out. Their drummer played a type of hyper blast beat that was novel for the time, they used funk style slapping on the bass, they wrote a lot of really groovy and melodic riffs and then they put it all together to give you a pretty original sounding package. As they moved on over time, they continued to experiment and never seemed to care if what they were trying out would disappoint or please. They did new things for their own reasons and that is always admirable.”

“Benedictine Convulsions” from None So Vile

“The lyrics are so well thought out and I love this line:
‘Infernal visions flay their souls
as their bodies contort and writhe…
Capricornus nocturnum haunts them,
from their torment springs its delight.'”

“Cold Hate, Warm Blood” from Whisper Supremacy

Charles Elliott of ABYSMAL DAWN / BEREFT
“This is one of my favorite songs from them if not my favorite for sure. It’s just so brutal and technical while still being melodic at the same time. When they put this record out melodic death metal was king, and this song just crushed all that by adding some good old school brutality. It even has an epic solo section! What more could you want?! True innovators.”

Chris Kells of THE AGONIST
“Been listening to CRYPTOPSY ever since High School when I first started getting into death metal. I think still one of my favorites would have to be ‘Cold Hate, Warm Blood’. I used to bug Chris to play that on his acoustic while tracking one of our albums. Oh and ‘Emaciate’ is also a great one.”

“When I first heard the song ‘Cold Hate, Warm Blood’ off of ‘Whisper Supremacy’ I was completely floored by the drumming on it, the technique and fills played on this song kinda opened up a whole new world of drumming to me”

Mark Holcomb of PERIPHERY
“I’d probably have to say ‘Cold Hate, Warm Blood’, as it’s my favorite song off of my favorite CRYPTOPSY album. ‘Whisper Supremacy’ was such an amazing record! :o)”

“Crown of Horns” from None So Vile

Neil Burkdoll of P.O.O.R.
“I’m sure this is a favorite song for many CRYPTOPSY fans, but it was the first song I ever heard from them back in 1996. In the Chicago land area, there was a metal magazine called ‘Inner Source’ that featured a CD sampler with each issue. One issue came with ‘Crown of Horns’ on it and it really blew me away. This same sampler was also the first time I heard DYING FETUS, so it was a pretty good issue. I was really into Black Metal at the time and pretty burnt out on Death Metal, but ‘Crown of Horns’ really stood out at the time. It was pretty extreme for ’96 and Lord Worm was a very unique vocalist as well. ‘Crown of Horns’ was really catchy and showed what ‘None So Vile’ had to offer. I think it summed up the album really well. I still listen to it every once in a while even after all of these years.”

“The sickest drumming I’ve ever heard with the ULTRA BRUTAL VOKILLS!!!! This song reminds me of the Milwaukee Metalfest daze, Great Death Blasting Metal!!!”

“Defenestration” from Blasphemy Made Flesh

“‘Defenestration’ was the first CRYPTOPSY song I ever heard; I couldn’t imagine a better introduction into their world of Canadian Death Metal. This song rips. I love the bass lines, the velocity of the drums, and how intense the whole damn song is. They put a lot of grind bands to shame with this release.”

“Emaciate” from Whisper Supremacy

Daniel Dismal of CREMATORIUM / Church of the 8th Day
“I have always known about CRYPTOPSY and was a fan of their technical prowess but when I first heard ‘Emaciate’ I was floored by not only the music but the strength behind the vocals. I know a lot of people will stand behind Lord Worm as being CRYPTOPSY’s best vocalist, and he is amazing in his own right but to me, Mike D delivered a face pounded vocal delivery that took this band from a great technical Death Metal band to an amazing, ass kicking, technically proficient worldwide act.”

“Endless Cemetery” from Once Was Not

Ralph Santola ex-DEICIDE / ex-ICED EARTH / ex-OBITUARY / ex-DEATH
“It’s just intense and fucking HEAVY, it reminds me of when I first heard extreme metal, that feeling of ‘wow, now THAT is extreme!'”

“Graves Of Our Fathers” from None So Vile

Benny (manager) of HEAVEN SHALL BURN
“Heavy breakdowns, hyper blasts = perfect death metal song.”

“Phobophile” from None So Vile

“The piano intro gets you so pumped and the main riff is beyond epic. No one sounded as evil as Lord Worm back then and Flo was the fastest. The guitar solo on this track is my favorite on the record. ‘None So Vile’ will always be one of my top Death Metal records of all time.”

Mario Moreno of EXMORTUS
“I remember hearing the ‘None So Vile’ album in high school and being blown away by Flo Mounier’s drumming. I used to think SLAYER was fast haha.”

Stephan Mellul of Rock The Nation USA
“I still think they had great tracks off ‘Blasphemy Made Flesh’ and the Mike DiSalvo days, but the beginning track off ‘None So Vile’ brought the band to higher levels for the Canadian Death Metal scene when it was released. The combination of grooves, grind and technicality – without forgetting Lord Worm’s classic growls & screams – all describe what made CRYPTOPSY unique in their own way.”

“Red Skinned Scapegoat” from Cryptopsy

Shane Embury of NAPALM DEATH
“I am quite partial to ‘Red Skinned Scapegoat,’ just got some nice arrangements and spastic drumming!”

“Shag Harbour’s Visitors” from Cryptopsy

Adam Sagan of CIRCLE II CIRCLE / Drumhead Magazine
“This song embodies the best of every period of CRYPTOPSY’s career. Wickedly technical, brutal yet melodic, neck-snapping but groovy, ‘Shag Harbour’s Visitors’ is the embodiment of technical death metal mastery.”

“Slit Your Guts” from None So Vile

Ben Orum of ALL SHALL PERISH / WeNeedMerch.com
“To me, ‘None So Vile’ is classic for two reasons. The first would be its cover art. Something about it is very intriguing to me, almost haunting. Every time I see it, it grabs my attention and instantly takes me back to being 16 years old in 1996 buying it the day it came out. Reason number 2: in a time before all of this computer drum quantizing fuckery that has become so standard, NSV is incredibly raw, groovy and insanely good. My favorite track off the disc is ‘Slit Your Guts.’ The drums on that track are so chaotic and real. It sounds like it was recorded in a few takes, and has an overwhelming sense of urgency to the music, which I absolutely love.”

“This was the landmark album for CRYPTOPSY and for me; this particular song showcased what they were capable of doing at the time. This was ground breaking death metal. Very unorthodox, with the slapping of the bass and usage of clean guitar. Quirky, but brutal as hell! One of my favorites and a classic in my opinion.”

Jason Netherton of MISERY INDEX
“The introductory punch in the face, the murderous tremolo picking, some of the fastest drumming ever laid on tape, the ridiculously heavy break in the mid-section, ripping solo, and the return to yet another face-stomping flurry of riffs at the end. It really is an example of a perfectly written death metal song, and at the time, set the bar for many bands that followed in the 90s.”

“It’s the first song I heard from them and its intensity just grabbed me, not to mention the extra hard mosh part.”

Travis Weickum of SKINNED
“Great song, reminds me of a great stabbing horror movie scene on the high guitar parts. It’s like psycho metal. Crazydeathgrind”

“Soar And Envision Sore Vision” from And Then You’ll Beg

Leif Jensen of DEW-SCENTED
“I love the craziness of its rather melodic riffs and the constant whirlwind of changing tempos and torrential breaks. I can listen to this one over and over again! I always enjoyed Mike DiSalvo’s powerful vocal delivery and his intense stage appearance and so I guess that made his two albums with CRYPTOPSY (‘Whisper Supremacy’ and ‘ATYB’) as well as the production of those records to my favorite period of this influential technical Death Metal band. DEW-SCENTED had the privilege of touring Europe with CRYPTOPSY in early 2006 (together with GRAVE and ABORTED — killer billing!) and I was pretty amazed how CRYPTOPSY pulled off their demanding sets flawlessly night after night! I have some great memories from that tour!”

Bison B.C.’s ‘Lovelessness’ Will Put Them On Your Love List

They hit you like a shovel, already caked in mud and blood and piss, slamming your brain. Bottom basement guitars rooted down deep with drum and bass rhythm and riff on top of heavy riff on top of heavier riff. Based in the love of all things metal and good, born out of the Sabbaths, and Panteras, and Soundgardens, and Melvins of the world. They are dirty, fast, drop D, pounding, pulsating, back to basics, metal up your ass, all that is beautiful and disgusting about metal that we love.
‘An Old Friend’ opens up ‘Lovelessness’ and has no reverence to your need for codling. It thrives on your hate and anger and fist pounding frustration. If you are at the edge you have just been given a hearty push as you hear the maniacal laugh in your descent. Bison B.C. creates layers of patterns that have a texture of grime and excrement polished with a bit of smut for good measure. Reminiscent of the works of Mastodon and their kin, Bison B.C. has the potential to reach that bands’ level as their fans will surely tell you, and has their own style to add to the genre of ‘mind metal’.

‘Anxiety Puke/Lovelessness’ is the second track on the effort and has a throb of punk sensibility reminiscent of Black Flag, but then flips itself over and takes root in old metal magic. Gorgeous guitars blend over one another and their notes hang and bump into one another with malice punctuated by agonizing vocals. Lyrically, the thematic of ‘Lovelessness’ are glaringly clear, this is no R.E.M. ‘Happy Shiny People’ unless Slayer covered the tune and changed the lyrics to deal with destruction, death, and desolation. The “psalms of suffering” continue with ‘Last and First Things’. Starting on a slower tone than its predecessors on the disc, it quickly pulls the listener in and puts a choke hold on their eardrums. Their is a dichotomy present here of complex yet simplistic measures that are burrowed in familiarity but have a twisting, festering, invasive new passion that is infectious; it’s as if the body has lost control and must now sway and pound in homage to the music before it.
‘Blood Music’ continues the barrage of the senses and will make any sensible metalhead pray that Bison B.C. hits their town. They have built quite a reputation for their live show, touring with the likes of Baroness, Priestess, and Ghenghis Tron. Hard hiiting and unsympathetic in its brutality, ‘Blood Music’ could be the best description of Bison’s sound yet. Next up is ‘Clozapine Dream’ named after the drug oft prescribed to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. The drug is typically used as a last resort, thus fitting very neatly into the feel and tone of Bison B.C.’s third release on Metal Blade. The cohesiveness of the music with the lyrical content puts this accomplishment on par with the bands’ cohorts such as Between the Buried and Me, Baroness, Becoming the Archetype, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. To conclude their latest is ‘Finally Asleep’ that trudges in with a military like beat to put to rest any doubts of the true weight of the material, bloody and beaten from the experience, scarred by pure existence, and disturbed beyond repair. It is the perfect cap off to what amounts to an amazing piece of sludge metal that will rot in your brain, devour your veins, and haunt your soul.

BISON B.C. worked with acclaimed producer Sanford Parker at Soma and Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago to record Lovelessness. Parker is best known for his work with bands such as Yob, Pelican, Rwake, Yakuza, Nachtmystium, Zoroaster, Unearthly Trance, and more. Needless to say, Parker is more than qualified to put-to-tape the raw, furious
energy that is BISON b.c.

What others are saying about Bison B.C.:

“thrash, smash and fuck-you-up energy that’ll soil your britches faster than a bottle of Mexican moonshine” Decibel
“And worthy of a herd of their namesake, their music is thunderous, bone-shaking and most of all, heavy. Really heavy.
These cats have got their own gravitational pull.” Sacramento Press
“Heavy, man. Real heavy. Jean-jacket heavy.” RollingStone.com

Braids, the Canadian experimental pop group who released Native Speaker in 2011, have reinvented themselves in the making of their second full length. Countless late-night drives have steered their attention towards new techno and house genres, deepening their appreciation of electronic based music. This curiosity has taken Braids from the rich, effects laden balance of Native Speaker to the inevitable point of a primarily electronic sound. Years spent as a live band only tightens the group further during this shift. As they head out in anticipation of their next album – due sometime in 2013 – their new songs will be played, fully live, in an exciting time in music as the gap between real and synthetic narrows, leaving room only for the pure energy driving the performance.

Three New Bison B.C. Song’s Streaming

In the great Canadian spirit of loss and heart ache, the downer foursome known as BISON B.C. have managed to scourge their rotting brains desperately puking out new psalms of suffering. Akin to a lunatic writing their opus on the bedroom wall with their own shit comes this strange noise from the west coast melting pot of shit and failure; in a country based on terrifying distance and lonesome, stoic suffering. Lovelessness does not portray the death of love or the lack of the same. Rather it attempts to map out the pathetic and desperate pursuit of love, which in itself becomes violent like a cancer, an assault on anything that is good in the world. A heartfelt repulsion towards anything that could bring pleasure, because with happiness we suffer truly – the wanting of more.

With the release of Lovelessness only a week away RevolverMag.com the online home of Revolver Magazine is offering another glimpse into the album with a premiere of a new track. Check out the song “Clozapine Dream” HERE.

Brooklyn Vegan is streaming the track “Last and First Things” HERE.
