Burnt Ones Premiere “New Heros of Subscription Services” on Brooklyn Vegan

Listen to “New Heros of Subscription Services” on Brooklyn Vegan

Burnt Ones have been a Castle Face favorite for years and last years “You’ll Never Walk Alone” on Burger was one that we kicked ourselves repeatedly for not getting to first. We’ve very honored to present their third record “Gift”, which may be a bit of a surprise to fans of the band on first listen – it’s far more psychedelic than their previous work, a potent blend of wide-eyed strummers on shifting sands, punctuated by blinking oscillators, left turns into wispy sound collage and tape manipulations, drug-rug wrapped lushness and telephone whispers from a supremely stoned sounding Tester, our guide through this cultish and at times vaguely sinister headphone-scape. It’s a woozy and a woolly one and it’s out on Castle Face Records March 25th, and features original artwork by William Keihn.

Sumie Premieres ‘Show Talked Windows’ On Brooklyn Vegan

Listen To ‘Show Talked Windows’ On Brooklyn Vegan!

Sometimes less is so much more, and in the case of Sumie’s self-titled debut, the combination of her voice and an acoustic guitar casts the most hypnotic and disarmingly simple spell.

Born Sandra Sumie Nagano in Gothenburg, Sweden, she first began recording her songs in 2008, a few years after becoming a mother. Unlike her sister Yukimi, who fronts the electro-pop outfit Little Dragon, Sumie has pursued a solitary and acoustic path. “It was not a style or a sudden choice but more me playing my guitar and having two small children so I could not make much noise,” she explains. “But I also love minimal and delicate music, so that felt like a natural direction for me.”

After years of travelling, Sumie had re-settled in Gothenburg and released a handful of tracks via digital store Bandcamp plus an animated video for the album highlight ‘Never Wanted To Be’, where images of snow, water and trees intercut with a glowing pyramid mirror the intoxicating, intriguing undercurrents of Sumie’s music. She waited to record an album, “until it sounded like I heard it in my head. Once I met Nils Frahm, Dustin O’Halloran and Simon Raymonde, I knew it was the right time. They understand what I’m doing.”

The album was recorded at German pianist Frahm’s studio; producer (and fellow pianist) O’Halloran has given Sumie’s songs a beautifully dappled light and shade, with the occasional subtle enhancement from his own piano. Befitting Sumie’s bloodline (Swedish mother, Japanese father), the album melds both current Scandinavian and Japanese folk strains. “I have always thought that the cultural differences are very interesting,” she says. “My way of doing things definitely carries the duality of both cultures.”

Sumie is released 3rd December on Bella Union. Click HERE to view Sumie’s album trailer featuring ‘Never Wanted To Be’.

SUMMONING Premiere New Song with Brooklyn Vegan and Invisible Oranges

Old Morning’s Dawn Available June 11th on Napalm Records

Seven long and agonizing years have finally come to an end, as Old Mornings Dawn – the highly anticipated new album by the cult band SUMMONING – is about to be released! Today Brooklyn Vegan and Invisible Oranges are hosting an exclusive premiere of the title track “Old Morning’s Dawn”.  Check it out at Brooklyn Vegan HERE and on Invisible Oranges HERE.

Despite the long break, the congenial duo Silenius and Protector did not stray an inch from their patch. Their distinctive melodies are the heart of all the songs on the latest longplayer, and bring the listeners directly into the fantastic world of Middle-Earth. This becomes evident in e.g. “Caradhras”, where already the first notes let the mighty and ice-clad mountain appear in the mist, whereas “Flammifer” summons the spirit of Eärendil.

The majestic and diverse hymns are a monument of epic proportions and are beyond comparison in each and every second. SUMMONING‘s Epic Black Metal is the perfect soundtrack for a world filled with legendary characters, massive strongholds and breathtaking landscapes Old Mornings Dawn marks the glorious return of a band, who has already become a legend in its own right.

IRON TONGUE: The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown Out NOW On Neurot Recordings

The Arkansas troupe fronted by Chris “CT” Terry (founding frontman of sludge legion Rwake) also comprises veteran musicians Jason Tedford and Mark Chiaro on guitars, bassist Andy Warr, drummer Stan James, keyboardist JR Top and backing vocalist Stephanie Smittle. Musically the album traverses between groove-laden soul to heavy-amped stomping Southern Rock – underpinned by a dark inner core all of which makes The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown a compelling listen from start to end. Terrorizer notes, “With songs as well-crafted as this, they more than earn a pass for leaning hard on tradition. Better still when they deign to rock out like some doom besotted product of the ‘90s, as on closer ‘Said N Done,’ they lay down the big riffs in grand window rattling style,” while Heavy Blog Is Heavy gushes, “With its heart in blues and its soul in metal, this cathartic crusher, hammered out by a mélange of Arkansas veteran musicians, pays due deference to its forbears. Initially, the music bears a strong resemblance to the recent batch of Townes Van Zandt covers, perpetrated by doom Illuminati Steve Von Till, Wino and Scott Kelly. Brief bursts of it emerge as IRON TONGUE roughly feed their country affectations and hefty, blues-tinged rock through the chomping maw of old school doom metal in much the same manner. However, there is no getting away from where much of this album’s running time is spent; playing between the twin forces of St. Vitus and The Allman Brothers Band.” This Is Not A Scene says The Dogs Have Barked, The Birds Have Flown is more than what the tags of Southern rock or doom suggest. There is a dark soul here and each song is played with sense of emotion and feeling than many bands that fall under those simplistic tags fail to muster.” Adds New Noise Magazine in a 4.5/5 rating: “It’s refreshing to hear a band try to mix classic rock and doom metal and not actually rip off Black Sabbath or anyone else for that matter, something that makes this band even more worth listening to.”

Brooklyn Vegan Streams Ell V Gore’s Sex Static EP

Listen To Sex Static at Brooklyn Vegan!

If Ell V Gore’s Sex Static sounds to you like it was made by four weirdos you’d meet at a pitch black, late night bizarre sex party beating their instruments half to death…well, that’s because it was. Toronto’s Ell V Gore is the project of 24 year old Ell V who has been playing in weirdo punk and no wave bands for the past decade. He is also a man known around town for throwing some of the freakiest late-night parties in the city (when he isn’t manning the microphone at strip clubs in between for cash).  Sex Static, their debut EP on Bad Actors, is an industrial punk rock beat-down. It is a visceral, dark, and loud late night album that sounds likeChairs Missing era Wire and The Birthday Partybeing filtered through a kaleidoscope of 90 shades of black and grey. Known around the city for their stunningly intense live show, the experience has translated well to record. The rhythm section is tight and malicious, the guitars and synthesizers scrape, scratch, and scream, and Ell V’s controlled Lux Interior-esque howl bounces off walls with the guttural intensity of Michael GiraWeirdos, freaks, and late night delinquents – your party has begun.

‘Sex Static’ Track Listing:

1. Her Vicious
2. Lobotomy
3. Smack Me Up
4. Death Strings (Los Angeles)

Live Dates:

6/13 Toronto, ON – Black Box Theatre (NXNE) *
6/16 Toronto, ON – The Garrison (NXNE)
6/30 Toronto, ON – The Hoxton ~

Daughn Gibson Heading Out on Tour This Fall

Oct. 29 – Chicago, IL – The Empty Bottle
Oct. 31 – St Louis, MO – Apop Records
Nov. 01 – Lawrence, KS – Replay Lounge
Nov. 03 – Austin, TX – Fun Fun Fun Fest
Nov. 04 – Austin, TX – Fun Fun Fun Fest
Nov. 05 – New Orleans, LA – Siberia
Nov. 06 – Oxford, MS – Lamar Lounge
Nov. 07 – Atlanta, GA – The Earl (w/ Earth)

Daughn Gibson’s debut album, All Hell, earned praise from Pitchfork, SPIN, FILTER, Austin Chronicle, Baltimore City Paper, Philadelphia Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, Brooklyn Vegan, Tiny Mix Tapes, The Needle Drop, and more. All Hell is out now on White Denim Records.

Pitchfork included All Hell in its “Overlooked Albums of 2012” feature, and said: “Gibson’s excellent debut heavily relies on crackly samples of old country and Christian gospel records, and he borrows from those musical forms’ history of storytelling, too, a narrative gift most directly channeled on the father-daughter-episode-of-“COPS” lament “Tiffany Lou.” None of these elements would carry as much haunting emotional resonance without the presence of Gibson’s voice, a deep, cavernous instrument that draws flashpoint comparisons in sound to both Scott Walker and James Blake. More than anything, Gibson’s debut sounds warm, fully realized, and lived-in. It’s as if he’s been doing this for years, and it inspires hope that he continues to do so for years to come.”

Meanwhile SPIN included All Hell in their “40 Best Albums of the Year…So Far.” SPIN says, “On his solo debut, All Hell, he’s able to work all sorts of dark magic, uncovering a lonesome, nocturnal space that’s shared by tears-in-your-beer, end-of-the-world jukebox country and sample-based, post-Burial electronic pop. He’s a honky-tonk spaceman who, at one time, earned his daily wage as a truck driver. He sounds like it.”

Daughn Gibson will tour in support of All Hell for the remainder of 2012. On October 29, he will hit the road for a short tour, which begins in Chicago, IL at the Empty Bottle and ends on November 7 in Atlanta, GA at the Earl. The latter trek also includes a performance in Austin, TX at Fun Fun Fun Fest (Nov. 3-4).

BISON B.C. Premiere New Song on Brooklyn Vegan

In the great Canadian spirit of loss and heart ache, the downer foursome known as BISON B.C. have managed to scourge their rotting brains desperately puking out new psalms of suffering. Akin to a lunatic writing their opus on the bedroom wall with their own shit comes this strange noise from the west coast melting pot of shit and failure; in a country based on terrifying distance and lonesome, stoic suffering. Lovelessness does not portray the death of love or the lack of the same. Rather it attempts to map out the pathetic and desperate pursuit of love, which in itself becomes violent like a cancer, an assault on anything that is good in the world. A heartfelt repulsion towards anything that could bring pleasure, because with happiness we suffer truly – the wanting of more. Gluttons! Pigs to the trough! Lead us to treachery! Lead us to solitude!

Today Brooklyn Vegan is hosting an exclusive premiere of another new track from Lovelessness. The track entitled “Last and First Things” is available for streaming HERE.

BISON B.C. worked with acclaimed producer Sanford Parker at Soma and Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago to record Lovelessness. Parker is best known for his work with bands such as Yob, Pelican, Rwake, Yakuza, Nachtmystium, Zoroaster, Unearthly Trance, and more. Needless to say, Parker is more than qualified to put-to-tape the raw, furious energy that is BISON B.C.

The first single from Lovelessness entitled “Anxiety Puke / Lovelessness” is streaming exclusively HERE. Get a first listen and be sure to pre-order your copy of the album. With Lovelessness, BISON B.C. will surely cement themselves as one of Canada’s finest metal exports.
