Pictorial: St. Vincent Fear the Future Tour in Pittsburgh at Stage AE

Touring in support of her latest album, ‘Masseducation,’ St. Vincent restarted her Fear the Future Tour in Pittsburgh Tuesday night at Stage AE. Released on October 13, 2017, ‘Masseducation’ is St. Vincent’s fifth album and her first record to debut in the Billboard top 10.

Off With Their Heads @ Howler’s on Dec 10th

The phrase “punk” gets thrown around a lot these days but for over a decade Off With Their Heads has eschewed trends and embodied that ethic with every ounce of their being. Having put out numerous releases and toured the country dozens of times the band are about to release Home, their best-sounding album to date which takes the group’s sound to the next level without sacrificing the palpable passion that’s made them underground favorites.
Off With Their Heads is the project of Minneapolis native Ryan Young and on Home he’s joined by drummer Justin Francis and bassist Robbie Swartwood, the latter of whom has been playing with the group for nearly five years. “It’s hard to bring people into a full-time touring punk band because you have to be a musician not someone who is doing this for a hobby,” Young admits. “An actual musician is the type of person who does this because it’s what they do. Money is always nice but you have to expect nothing and still play like you care.”
For their second release on Epitaph the band teamed up with one of Young’s heroes, Descendents’ drummer Bill Stevenson who produced the album at the Blasting Room in Fort Collins, Colorado—and the result is an album that captures the raw passion of Off With Their Heads’ live shows without obscuring any of the instrumentation with a slick, studio sheen. “It was really important that this record didn’t sound too polished so once we agreed on a general sound of the record it was great,” Young explains. “It’s definitely the best-sounding record that we’ve done.”
Home is also the strongest collection of Off With Their Heads’ songs to date and certainly the most diverse. From the instantly catchy sing-alongs of “Shirts” to straight-ahead, Ramones-influenced ragers like “Seek Advise Elsewhere” and stripped-down ballads like “Don’t’ Make Me Go,” Homeshows how much the band have grown sonically since their last release, a development that is no doubt due to the fact that the band have spent so much time on the road touring with everyone from Municipal Waste to Kind Of Like Spitting in everything from massive theaters to basements.
If there’s a lyrical theme on Home, it’s personal experiences whether that ranges from struggles with identity (“I don’t feel like me, whatever that’s supposed to be” from “Shirts”) to tales from the road. However as you might expect it all comes back to the fact that for a full-time touring punk rocker the word “home” has a very unique connotation. “I think I used to take for granted the simple notion of having an apartment in Minneapolis,” Young explains. “The album is about the bad feelings associated with being at home, why people leave home, and how important it is to have a good one.”
Over the course of these twelve songs Young expresses that sentiment in different ways and the content on the disc explores everything from being oppressed because of one’s sexuality (“Focus on Your Own Family”) in addition to more personal writing that exposes Young’s own misgivings about the Catholic church and the impact it’s had on his family life (“Altar Boy”). Then there’s a song like “Don’t Make Me Go” which guest vocalist Tony Kovacs from Shot Baker summarized telling the band, “OWTH has a story and this explains a lot.” Listening to the impassioned track, it’s evident why this is true.
Having toured with everyone from Bad Religion to the Dropkick Murphys, Young has learned that in order for him to maintain his ethics he tells his bandmates that “playing a show in front of 6,000 people is no different than playing a house show” and you can tell by the group’s countless live performances that this isn’t just lip service. “I’m proud that I have pretty much maintained my core beliefs over the years,” he explains. “Opening for my heroes is cool but that’s their crowd and I have always been about carving my own part through all of this.”
Despite the fact that Off With Their Heads have performed everywhere from Jacksonville to Japan over the past decade, it’s clear that even if OWTH never left Minneapolis they would be doing the exact same thing just as passionately. “Everything involved with this band has become larger and more successful than I could have hoped for,” Young admits, citing signing to Epitaph as one of these milestones. “The only goals I have for myself and OWTH is to continue to make music that I care about, try to push myself physically and musically and continue to be able to do what I love for a living.”

Boston at Pittsburgh’s Key Bank Pavilion

Review and pix: Ed Thompson

The anticipation for Boston at Pittsburgh’s Key Bank Pavilion was so/so leading up the show Friday for a few reasons. One, they were calling for 3 inches of rain between 9 pm and 12 am along with dangerous lightning, which coincidently was the same time Boston would be hitting the stage and playing. The other reason was going to see yet another legendary 70’s-80’s rock band minus their original lead singer and a few other members. Much like Journey and Foreigner though, Boston was making it apparently with Tommy DeCarlo. So, I just had to go and see what it was about. I can’t deny that when I saw the summer schedule had Boston on, I did get excited to see one of my favorite bands growing up.

Joan Jett was the supporting act, and unfortunately, she did not allow any photographers for the show. I will say this, however, her set list, for the most part, hasn’t changed over the years, yet she continues to have a great and strong rock voice hitting all the notes she needs to, to complete her set. With that being said, the roadies QUICKLY got the stage ready and Boston hit the stage promptly at the time the said earlier in the day. I think the weather or the threat of severe weather really kept the crews tight with the time Boston was set to hit the stage.

Boston opened with Rock and Roll Band as expected with a brief guitar opening by original member Tom Scholz.  The transition into RNR Band was nice. Nothing spectacular, but it got the crowd jumping and in the mood for the show that would test the crowd at times due to the ever-changing weather conditions.

The setlist rolled right into the meat of the show with Feelin’ Satisfied, Smokin’ and Heaven on Earth. I think the crowd really got up on their feet and stayed there with Peace of Mind and It’s Been Such a Long Time.  The band lead by Tommy DeCarlo kept the crowd guessing and wanting more and more Boston. The main chunk of their sets were many favorites such as Cool The Engines, Hollyann, I think I Like it and Something About You. At the mid-way point, the weather changed and really hit the Key Bank Pavilion pretty hard. When you can feel the rain at the sound boards, you know you are having some serious weather.  I’m not sure if the band upped the tempo at all or cut out some talking to the fans, but I think with the imminent weather, they would have been smart to do so. I’ve been to a few shows at the pavilion before when the delayed or stopped the show due to weather. Luckily tonight for Boston, they did not.

Tommy DeCarlo is a dead ringer in my opinion for a seasoned Brad Delp. Close your eyes and as a general Boston fan, you can’t really tell the difference. Probably for the hard core fans, that’s untrue.

Amanda was INCREDIBLE. Insert the “dead ringer” comment here again regarding DeCarlo and Delp. Put that same insert for More Than a Feeling. Loved both these songs and the way the band performed them. Truly the highlight of the night for me and many of the fans tonight.  DeCarlo had a great night vocally. He kept the crowd in the palm of his hand pretty much all night long.  He played the crowd well and the crowd I think played him well too.

Winding down towards the home stretch brought The Journey and To Be a Man and Foreplay/Long Time. Most definitely with the weather coming into their concerns, the encore was a one song encore and was just incredible. Party closed out the night and left the Boston fans of Pittsburgh already looking at their phones seeing if Boston will roll through in the fall or winter. Unfortunately, for them, there are no more Pgh dates even close.  The fans from the Steel City will probably have to wait till next summer to get another dose of their BOSTON.

All in all, a great show.  DeCarlo was strong from start to finish.  No real surprises.  Your basic, strong performance by the sole survivor of the original band from Boston and some very talented musicians.

Mark Lanegan Band Announce “Still Life With Roses” Remix EP Out September 29th on Heavenly Recordings

Mark Lanegan Band Announce Still Life With Roses Remix EP, Out September 29th Via Heavenly Recordings
On US Tour in August
US Tour Dates
Following career-best reviews for his tenth album Gargoyle, and a sold–out UK tour in late June, MARK LANEGAN BAND today announce the release of Still Life With Roses, a 6 track EP of remixes from the LP by various producers whose work he admires. The EP, released 29th September via Heavenly Recordings, will be available as 12” vinyl and download and comprises a brilliant array of remixes by the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Adrian Sherwood and Pye Corner Audio. The Adrian Sherwood remix of Nocturne is available an instant grat and streaming HERE, the track listing is further down the announcement:

Press acclaim for Gargoyle:

“Mark Lanegan makes blues for our time, chopping up sonic tropes, stretching them over handcarved laments, wrenching them from his throat and bleeding badly all over them.” -PASTE

“It features, as always, Lanegan’s smoky, whiskey-soaked baritone singing voice (if you’re unfamiliar, imagining a more soulful Leonard Cohen puts you in the ballpark), and it continues his ongoing explorations of synth music” -Dangerous Minds

“[It] is stunning not only for the music’s scintillating sheen, but also for Lanegan’s excellent performance. His gruff baritone has always been reminiscent of Leonard Cohen, but here he recalls the late great’s iridescent lyrics with a moribund romanticism.” – Stereogum

“The one constant has been Lanegan’s moody, melancholic soul-shaker of a voice.” –The A.V. Club

“Gargoyle is as confident and assured as anything Lanegan has released. It stands up alongside his best work and pushes his method in a few new directions, without trying to break from the paradigm” -Pop Matters

“Gargoyle has an early 80s UK electronic rock feel, with Lanegan’s rough vocal rasp sawing through musical timbres reminiscent of what was being played out at Manchester’s Factory.” – The WIRE

Still Life With Roses tracklist:
1. Nocturne (Adrian Sherwood remix)
2. Blue Blue Sea (Not Waving Remix)
3. Old Swan (Pye Corner Audio remix)
4. Beehive (Andrew Weatherall remix)
5. Beehive (Andrew Weatherall dub)

6. Death’s Head Tattoo (Falling Percussion Dub)

CHON recently announced the release of their second full-length album Homey on June 16th via Sumerian Records. Underneath a canopy of electronic-tinged soundscapes and tapestries of lush guitar mastery, you can practically feel the Southern California coast come to life on Homey.
Following the success of 2015’s Grow and worldwide touring with everyone from Periphery and Animals As Leaders to Circa Survive, the instrumental trio-brothers Mario [guitar] and Nathan Camarena [drums] and Erick Hansel [guitar]-returned home to San Diego in the summer of 2016 to begin work on what would become their next musical offering. For the very first time, they rented a rehearsal space a stone’s throw from the ocean, and the beachside locale’s influence courses through 12 virtuosic and vibrant new musical movements.
Those vibes transformed CHON into a vital force since their emergence in 2008. Grow marked their first entry on the Billboard Top 200, landing prominently in the Top 150. They impressively average 144K Spotify streams monthly with over 10 tracks cracking the 1-million mark and fan favorites such as “Story,” “Bubble Dream,” and “Can’t Wait” surpassing 2 million-a remarkable feat for a chiefly instrumental act. Homey sees them expand once more, incorporating a slew of future bass influences with collaborators such as Go Yama on “Berry Streets” and Lophile on “Nayhoo”, which also features a vocal cameo from Masego.
With excitement towards the upcoming release, CHON explains, “We’re super proud to show everyone our new album “Homey”. This time we tried a lot of new things out that we’ve always wanted to do, one of which being the chance to collab with a bunch of our favorite artists of all time, so this is a really special album to us. The loose concept behind the name “Homey” comes from the music being inspired by where we live in Southern California. A lot of magical moments went into the creation of this thing, and we hope you feel ’em”
CHON is set to release their upcoming full-length album Homey on June 16, 2017. For more information, please visit: http://www.chonofficial.com/.

With Anthrax and KsE rotating the closing slot over the course of the dates, the tour will hit the ground on March 29 in Montclair, NJ and then criss-cross the continent, wrapping up in Boston on May 7. The intense and dynamic The Devil Wears Prada will provide direct support on all dates.

Multi-tasking Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta will perform solo as Jasta and open the first 10 shows of the tour – including the two Killswitch Engage headline shows that do not feature Anthrax.
Pittsburgh‘s Code Orange, who are being hailed as one of the most exciting metal acts of 2017 with the release of their new album FOREVER, will open all of the dates thereafter. Code Orange jump on the tour on April 11.

Tickets are on sale via the Anthrax sitethe KsE site, and the TDWP site. Please visit those locations for all details regarding ticketing.

Killswitch Engage released the universally regarded Incarnate (Roadrunner) this past March, which debuted #6 on the Billboard 200, and #1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Album chart. 2016 also saw KsE appearing on a Stars Wars-themed Revolver cover, staging an unforgettable and intimate, five-club NYC takeover for album release week, and embarking on an impressive Incarnate World Tour. On November 25, the band released Beyond the Flames: Home Video Vol. II on Blu-ray, a treasure trove of gripping content, containing over 3.5 hours of footage. At the heart of this release is a 75-minute documentary that chronicles the return of original vocalist Jesse Leach, after nearly a decade away, to the band he helped form back in 1999. It picks up right where their 2005 {Set This} World Ablaze release left off, revealing the rest of the untold KsE story. Beyond the Flames is now available digitally.

For Anthrax, these dates are in support of the band’s critically-celebrated 11th album,  For All Kings (Megaforce), released last February. Celebrating its 35 th anniversary, 2016 has been action-packed for Anthrax.  For All Kings debuted at #1 on

Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart and #9 on the Billboard 200, the band’s second Top 10 chart entry. Two striking music videos made with director Jack Bennett, one over-the-top grizzly, the other an innovative stop-motion piece, an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers that paired the band with the iconic Robert De Niro, and sharing stages with bands like Iron Maiden, Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, and fellow Big Four members, Slayer were just a few of the highlights.
“Anthrax and Killswitch will be a really good blend for fans,” said Anthrax’s Charlie Benante. “We both play metal, but we play two different forms of the genre. I think fans of both bands are in for a ‘Total Explosion of the Senses.'” Added the band’s Frank Bello, “This Anthrax/KSE tour is a powerful ball of energy ready to unleash the metal in the U.S.”
“Anthrax and Killswitch – KillThrax! Holy crap!,” said Scott Ian. “I am so excited about these upcoming shows with our old friends Killswitch Engage. Get out your pit pants and start stretching now for all the glorious action and fun!”
KsE singer Jesse Leach echoed Anthrax’s enthusiasm about the upcoming trek, saying, “We are so stoked to tour with thrash legends Anthrax! We are sure this will bring a powerhouse of a live show with the combination of both bands. This is, hands down, the most excited we’ve been to tour alongside a band in a long while. This will be one you won’t want to miss. KillThrax is coming for you!!!!”
“I rarely get to tour with Jasta and since the rest of my year is booked up with Hatebreed tours, I jumped at the chance to hit the road and debut some new Jasta songs with some of my favorite people in metal,” said Jamey Jasta. “Not only is the tour hitting some of my favorite cities to play, the lineup offers something for every generation of metal and hardcore fan. Come out early and get the pit started with us!”

ABOUT KILLSWITCH ENGAGE:
Formed in 1999 out of western Massachusetts, Killswitch Engage are often credited as one of the most influential metal acts in the last 20 years. Twice Grammy-nominated, they’ve sold over 3 million records worldwide, with The End of Heartache and As Daylight Dies both certified Gold in the U.S. The band has enjoyed multiple Top 10-charting albums, with 2016’s Incarnate (March 11/Roadrunner) landing at #6 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Current Rock Albums chart, and debuting at #1 overall in Canada, #5 in Australia, and #10 in both the UK and Germany, a testament to the band’s international reach.

As cofounders of Killswitch Engage, guitarist/backing vocalist Adam Dutkiewicz, guitarist Joel Stroetzel, bassist Mike D’Antonio, and lead vocalist Jesse Leach (who returned four years ago after a decade-long absence) together with longtime drummer Justin Foley continue to make trend-resistant, timeless heavy music that feeds the soul, touches the heart, and strengthens the mind. Spending much of their career on the road, Killswitch Engage have enjoyed premium slots on major U.S. tours, including OzzFest, Warped Tour, Taste of Chaos, Rockstar Energy Mayhem Fest, Music As a Weapon, and Trespass America, as well as countless international festivals around the globe. Having shared the stage with acts ranging from Rise Against to Slayer, the diversity and versatility of their touring is unparalleled. Their songs have been featured on Guitar Hero III, Rock Band, John Madden, the Resident Evil III soundtrack, and as entrance music for WWE wrestling champ CM Punk.

ABOUT ANTHRAX:
As part of the band’s 35th anniversary year, Anthrax released one of 2016’s most-anticipated metal/thrash albums, For All Kings (February 26/Megaforce in North America/Nuclear Blast internationally), that debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Chart and at #9 on Billboard’s Top 200, becoming Anthrax’s highest-charting album in more than two decades. Written by drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello and guitarist Scott Ian, the dynamic triumvirate whose unique composition chemistry is, in part, what sets Anthrax’s music apart from other bands’ in the same genre, combined with Joey Belladonna’s breathtaking vocals and the searing guitar leads by newest member Jonathan Donais, it’s no wonder the album and the band’s live shows have consistently received tremendous reviews.

Over its 35-year career, Anthrax has been a pioneering band with its unique style, sound and heavy brand of thrash metal, and, as Metallica’s Kirk Hammett put it, “one can hear their influence on any number of up and coming bands.”  Anthrax has sold in excess of 10-million units, received multiple Gold and Platinum certifications, six Grammy nominations and a host of other accolades from the media, industry and fans.  From the race and genre barriers Anthrax helped break down in 1988 when they collaborated with Public Enemy on “Bring The Noise,” to becoming a card-carrying member of The Big Four – with Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth – as one of the four bands that defined the speed/thrash metal genre, to being the first metal band to have its music heard on Mars when NASA played “Got The Time” to wake up the Mars Rover, Anthrax continues to break ground and innovate. Click here for more about Anthrax’s 35 years

ABOUT THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA:
The Devil Wears Prada is the musical embodiment of a generational shift. Built on a diverse array of heavy, dark, melodic and genre-defying music, hardened and sharpened by putting in road work together since the days when they had to skip class to tour, The Devil Wears Prada has long been at the forefront of a movement that bridges the gap between Rockstar Mayhem and the Vans Warped Tour.

In many ways, the band -Mike Hranica (vocals), Jeremy DePoyster (rhythm guitar, clean vocals), Andy Trick (bass), and the recent addition of Kyle Sipress (guitar)-has embraced transition and change since their 2005 formation. After the pivotal breakout With Roots Above and Branches Below in 2009, the boys challenged the status quo and notched widespread critical acclaim, landing two consecutive Top 10 debuts on the Billboard Top 200 for the conceptual Zombie EP [2010] and Dead Throne [2011]. Two thousand thirteen’s 8:18 continued to expand their imprint on heavy music, while the intergalactic concept epic Space EP (2015) blasted off to a #18 debut and praise from Alternative Press, Loudwire, and more. With influences from novels like The Mandarins by Simone de Beauvoir, William Faulkner’s The Sound and The Fury, and Russian literature by Nabokov, Chekhov, and Dostoevsky, Prada gets very personal on their new album, Transit Blues (10-7-16), tackling topics like gun control, anxiety and the toll that touring takes. All Music called it “as blistering and visceral as anything they’ve ever done.”

ABOUT CODE ORANGE:
Pittsburgh, PA’s Code Orange, the progressive unit comprised of Jami Morgan (Drums/Vocals), Eric Balderose (Guitar/Vocals), Reba Meyers (Guitar/Vocals) and Joe Goldman (Bass) have gripped listeners and press around the globe with their visionary compositions and aggressive power. Code Orange’s elevated and expansive mixture of hardcore and punk has situated them at the forefront of a new generation of artists. In September of 2014 with Code Orange approaching their 20’s, the band released their landmark second LP, I Am King, which Pitchfork asserted as “…the most forward-thinking post-hardcore record of 2014.”
Crashing through the confines of genre limitations, Code Orange proved that their power lies in their fearlessness and audacity.  With the release of their new LP FOREVER, Code Orange are quickly cementing their place as one of the boldest and most dynamic bands in heavy music.  Rolling Stone exclaimed, “FOREVER captures some of the most punishing noise the band has recorded to date, featuring songs rife with sudden transitions to still-harsher textures,” while The FADER selected Code Orange as one of “13 Artists You Need To Know About in 2017.”  NPR declared that “FOREVER, the band’s…third album, is among its most bruising works, with surprises throughout,” while Stereogum exclaimed, “The ferocious Pittsburgh hardcore bruisers Code Orange have long been one of the most restless, feverish groups within their genre, and their willingness to experiment has set them apart.”

LAYNE at Smiling Moose in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, August 27th

LAYNE (sounds like: The 1975, Halsey, PVRIS) is a Los Angeles based indie pop-rock duo made up of lead-singer/guitarist Layne Putnam and drummer Alex Rosca, who are set to release their debut EP entitled The Black Hillsout August 26th.
For a taste of their live performance, check out their recent session on Jam In The Van: http://www.jaminthevan.com/band/layne/
And check out her recent feature for Paste Magazine’s ‘Best Of What’s Next’: https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2016/07/layne-the-best-of-whats-next.html
The band has created quite a stir online through their viral hit singles “Good” and “Somebody”, already surpassing 1 million Spotify plays and landing them Top 15 spots on two key Spotify/Billboard charts (U.S. Spotify Viral 50 and Global Viral 50) and a crazy amount of Spotify playlists such as New Music Friday, New Talent (French), and What’s Next.
You can definitely hear their musical influences in their music itself, but the band finds their true inspiration through this world they created called ‘The In Between’.
This world, as they described to me, is this dark, foresty, dystopian-esque place in their minds where they go to write their music, and where the lonely can be lonely together. It’s how Layne and Alex initially bonded and it’s how Layne in the band was able to write her hits like “Good” and “Somebody“.
LAYNE is proud to announce that the band’s highly anticipated debut EP The Black Hills is set to release Friday, August 26th.  The five track EP features the band’s signature dystopian indie-pop sound that was previously portrayed in their viral hits “Somebody” and “Good”, which have received over 1 million Spotify streams.

“The Black Hills EP is a collection of songs written over the past year and an introduction to LAYNE,” says lead singer-songwriter, Layne Putnam. “It is a place where we can be alone together. Welcome to the in-between.” Within the EP, Putnam performed/recorded all the instruments on each track and also co-produced it alongside Los Angeles engineer/producer, Devon Corey.

Check out LAYNE’s hit single “Good”
In writing the EP, Putnam was inspired by her surrounding environment, from the busy streets of Los Angeles to the ominous Black Hills mountain range in her beloved hometown of Rapid City, South Dakota. The dynamic of these environments has shaped the sound in this EP to bridge the depth of her lyrics, with opposing themes of loneliness and community, peace and war, and love gained and lost.  Tracks like the catchy “Topical” and “Boys Do” showcase Putnam’s uncanny ability to write strong hooks and choruses, while tracks like “You” and “Phone” embody her gift for pop melodies that songwriters work their entire lives to achieve. Putnam also made an effort to subtly immortalize her home into her music, Putnam recorded the sound of her childhood lake into songs like “Twuh.”

In promotion of the upcoming release, LAYNE will be playing numerous cities around the US through the end of the year, making stops in New York, Chicago, Denver, and Kansas City at the end of the month, and further give fans an introduction into ‘the in-between’. More cities and dates to be announced.

Check out show dates below along with the EP track listings. The EP and upcoming show dates are available for review upon request. LAYNE will also be available for press in NYC on August 29th.

LAYNE is Layne Putnam and Alexander RoscaTheir EP The Black Hillswill be independently released August 26th.

ROBOTS AND MONSTERS: New Jersey Hardcore/Metal Act Premieres “Signing Off” From New EP Via New Noise Magazine

New Noise Magazine is now streaming the new single from New Jersey-based ROBOTS AND MONSTERS and their impending Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight EP.
“Signing Off” is the closing track to the new seven-song record which follows a concept about battling your own mind, and as the band informs us of the track, “By the end of his journey, our anti-hero takes full ownership of his thoughts. In ‘Signing Off,’ we find him embracing the dread, the sadness. He yearns for peace, to ‘leave it all behind.’ Whether that means a physical end or a symbolic end to this internal suffering is up to the listener to decide.”
Hear ROBOTS AND MONSTERS’ new track “Signing Off” only through New Noise Magazine RIGHT HERE.
Also stream the EP-opening “King Of The World” HERE.
With its roots tracing to bands including Mucky Pup, The Bloodhound Gang, and more, ROBOTS AND MONSTERS owns a sound that deftly combines the commanding crunch of metal with the groove, punch, and emotion of hardcore and post-hardcore, a trait which finds the band comfortably sharing bills populated with any type of aggressive music. Their upcoming Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight EP follows a concept about battling your own mind, the theme backed by high-energy metal and dosed with old-school hardcore. The seven-song storyline was recorded at Portrait Recording Studios with engineer John Ferrara, and mastered by Chris Badami, and features art by bassist Bill Bergmann.
ROBOTS AND MONSTERS will independently release the Nothing To Fear Nothing To Fight EP on CD and digital formats September 2nd; preorders are available via the band HERE.
ROBOTS AND MONSTERS continues to book shows through the Summer months in preparation of the new EP, including a show in New London, Connecticut on August 6th, a show in Brooklyn supporting All Out War on August 13th, and more, with more one-off shows and widespread tour dates to be added.

Aloud: All about vinyl but “A Little Bit Low”

Fiery, vintage rockers Aloud, are huge fans of vinyl.  In fact, lead vocalist/guitarist Jen de la Osa almost exclusively listens to music on vinyl, and the band plans to release their forthcoming album on vinyl as well.

With a sound reminiscent of Alabama Shakes, Dr. Dog, Fitz and the Tantrums, The Black Keys, and The Love Language, Boston-based Aloud is known for their lead pair’s, “tight male/female vocals, exceptionally strong songwriting, and energy-filled live performances.” (Boston Music Live) . Henry Beguiristain (lead vocals/guitar) and  Jen de la Osa (lead vocals/guitar)  have been writing songs together since they were teenagers.  They moved from their hometown of Miami, FL to Boston, founded  Aloud, and began touring extensively in early 2008 to support their album Fan The Fury. It was during this time their constant rhythm section departed due to conflicting priorities, but in 2009, Aloud welcomed aboard Charles Murphy (bass/backing vocals). In 2010,Aloud released the folkier-edged Exile and toured the U.S. coast-to-coast to promote it, rocking major venues like  Paradise Rock Club (Boston), Mercury Lounge (NYC), The Double Door (Chicago), and Exit/In (Nashville).  Frank Hegyi (drums/percussion) joined as Aloud’s drummer in early 2012, and the four feature their refined, songwriting sensibilities on their forthcoming album It’s Got To Be Now, out 4/1/14.

The first single, “A Little Bit Low” is the perfect example of Aloud‘s signature “refined, well-crafted rock songs that still have that loose, shaggy excitement that made all of us fall in love with rock & roll to begin with.” (Elmore Magazine) It’s “catchier than a cold and equally contagious to those who listen. ” (Revolution 360)

“Raw, honest, and, in the end, a damn fine rock and roll band doing it on their terms,” (Boston Phoenix)
Aloud welcomes their energetic, guitar-driven single “A Little Bit Low” (released on Mother West Records), showcasing their, “tight male/female vocals, exceptionally strong songwriting, and energy-filled live performances.” (Boston Music Live)

REVIEW: Blitz From Boston – Punk/Hardcore Anthology Pays Tribute

Beyond the streets of Los Angeles, Washington D.C. was a hub for a budding interest in adrenaline-drenched punk and hardcore music ideologies. But while Bad Brains was taking control of the Capital City, the punk vibe was steadily brewing further north. Boston, Massachusetts was gathering its own punk and hardcore scene, one that LA and DC couldn’t handle. Pioneered by bands like Gang Green, the Boston punk/hardcore phenomenon was taking over. After more than 30 years since the scene hit, influential figures in the movement have released Drop the Needle – Boston Punk Anthology, a collection of legendary punk tracks and unreleased materials from figureheads of Boston-based punk and hardcore. If you’re wondering why punk was such a big deal during the 80’s in Boston, this is the record to listen to. It doesn’t cover every single facet, but this music is still some of the most furious examples of everything great about the scene.

“First Nickel” possesses all of the energy of a punk classic, but tames it quite a bit with melody and some blistering guitar solos. Its emphasis on texture over speed makes it a much less potent chaser after the Red-Bull-spiked adrenaline punch of the first three tracks. The songs by Celebrity Death Certificate don’t reach the paces of classic punk energy, but the band demonstrates a nice control over their intensity. It’s clearly metal over punk, but that’s not a bad thing.

The Scratch tracks are the songs that stand out the most in the “punk” or “hardcore” vibe, because they really aren’t either. Their steadier tempos and Black Sabbath-style guitar solos are so incredibly noticeable when standing on the same album as Gang Green. The bass lines on the song “Centralia” are so heavy, even when set behind the rugged and ripped guitars, highlighting Scratch’s slower pace (which also contributes to the song’s length, which is massively longer than other tracks on the album). The songs from Mallet Head continue this trend, with the live version of “Mother Sunshine” progressing with a stomping rhythm beat and a vocal chorus that, while definitely good for brewing those pits, calls out longer than your typical punk “oi!” But like the Scratch tunes, Mallet Head’s tracks emphasize steadiness and are clearly more based in classic heavy metal than 80’s hardcore punk.

This makes the third Scratch song “El Monstro” such a sucker punch to the face; it starts off quiet and steady enough, but bursts into punk pacing without any warning. The band’s metal skill darts through in a great guitar solo, but still keeps its tempo energized and racing. The brew of metal and punk reaches a near-perfect pitch on “El Monstro”, a track that is able to please both headbanging metalheads and the amped-up punk fans. It’s one of the best tracks on the record.

Probably the most interesting inclusion is five rare demo tracks by Smegma and the Nunz, one of Boston’s premiere punk supergroups that would eventually become the second major lineup for Gang Green. Composed of members of Gang Green and The Freeze, along with the late vocalist of Leper (what is said to be the first hardcore band in the Boston region), Alec Steere, Smegma and the Nunz are still as rambunctious and energized as ever. Steere’s sneering vocals are right up there with the legends of The Sex Pistols and Black Flag. Guitarist Chuck Stilphen (who appears on all other tracks on the album) is a very skilled axeman who is able to mix melodic texture and punk endurance together fascinatingly. “Napalm Sticks to Kids” has an infectiously creepy guitar bend throughout the track, while the bass beats in “Nuns of Guatemala” are just as inescapably hypnotic. As one of the unsung heroes of punk, Smegma and the Nunz’ influence is just as important as Gang Green’s, and in some ways, accelerates itself far past its own breaking point while still managing to stay on its feet. It’s downright incredible how much this music holds up today.

It’s kind of sad how the Boston scene seemed to get set aside in favor of the Los Angeles scene, because the music it produced was something of immeasurable potency. Unlike other groups, its speed and energy never trumped its musicians’ virtuosity. The songwriting from Smegma and the Nunz is amazing: blisteringly fast, but melodic and toned when it needs to be. The Mallet Head and Celebrity Death Certificate tracks don’t stand out as much, but they’re not as all bad: they just have a lot to live up to sharing the stage with Gang Green. Scratch manages to keep both punk and metal fundamentals in equilibrium; “El Monstro” is a fantastic recording. The inherently influential nature of Boston-based punk and hardcore is something of Northeastern myth (trust me, this is Pittsburgh), so seeing the movement get such a resounding tribute is downright incredible. Boston had a lot of offer for punk and hardcore, and this record is a fine sampling of what made the movement so massively appealing, even in 2014.

THE ROLLING STONES ARE BACK! “50 AND COUNTING”

Tickets On-Sale Beginning April 8

The Rolling Stones, who rocked London and New York in 2012, announced today that they will kick off their “50 AND COUNTING” tour in Los Angeles at the STAPLES Center.  (Date TBA pending NBA/NHL playoff schedules.) The tour debut will be followed by performances in Oakland, San Jose, Las Vegas, Anaheim, Toronto, Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia.

“50 AND COUNTING” continues the exhilarating celebration of the band’s first 50 years—five decades of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood bringing their iconic music and ground-breaking stage shows to audiences around the globe.

The Rolling Stones were recently crowned the ‘Best Live Band’ at the NME Awards in London, and over the past 12 months have thrilled fans with their release of a greatest hits collection, “GRRR!,” a groundbreaking documentary film “Crossfire Hurricane,” a photographic book “Rolling Stones: 50,” and have taken the stage by storm for their first live shows in many years. The tour is the band’s highly anticipated return to the stage.

“’50 AND COUNTING’ has been pretty amazing so far,” said Jagger. “We did a few shows in London and New York last year…and had such a good time that we thought…let’s do some more.  It’s a good show.  Lots of the classic stuff everyone wants to hear…with a few little gems tucked in here and there.  The stage is shaped like lips and goes off into the venue so I get to run around in the crowd.  It’s great fun to be able to get that close to the audience.”

“From day one at rehearsals it sounded so fresh.  You could tell that everybody was dying to get their teeth into it.  It was like…open the gates…let us out!” said Richards. “Cause man, it is the life and blood of us to play in front of people.”

Tickets for Oakland, San Jose, Toronto and Chicago go on sale beginning Monday, April 8 at 10AM local time and will be available at www.rollingstones.com.

Citi® cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning April 5 at 10AM local time through Citi’s Private Pass® Program. For complete presale details visit www.citiprivatepass.com.

“Our mission is to offer Citi cardmembers more access to the music and entertainment they love, and the Rolling Stones have been a soundtrack for the life experiences of so many,” said Jennifer Breithaupt, SVP of Entertainment Marketing at Citi. “We are thrilled to be providing exclusive presales and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for Citi cardmembers to see one of the most iconic bands in history perform live.”

Mick Taylor, who was a member of the Rolling Stones from 1969-74, will be a special guest throughout the tour.

The band will treat their generations of fans to an evening of classic Stones hits like “Gimme Shelter,” “Paint It Black,” “Jumping Jack Flash,” “Tumbling Dice,” and “It’s Only Rock and Roll,” curated with lesser known gems, and a cover or two.

The stage design for the tour is based on the band’s ubiquitous tongue and lips logo, which extends out into the crowd, allowing the Stones to interact directly with their audience.  Known for their ground-breaking sets and use of cutting-edge technology, the Stones’ set design will feature video screens and special effects that will enhance the high-octane experience of attending a live Stones’ show.

The band will also play London’s Hyde Park on Saturday, July 6 following a headlining appearance at UK’s Glastonbury Festival on June 29.

The Rolling Stones “50 AND COUNTING” tour will be the band’s first venture with worldwide tour promoter AEG Live’s Concerts West.
