MATT PLESS Perfects “Ashtray” with Re-Recording of ‘Tumbleweed’

JeanetteDMoses-MattPortraits-1

Baltimore, MD Folk-Punk Singer/Songwriter MATT PLESS has returned to his 2013 released masterpiece Tumbleweed with a re-recording of the acoustic 12 track LP. Invoking the lyrical brilliance of BOB DYLAN, the instrumental diversity of THE VIOLENT FEMMES, and the folkish undertones of FLOGGING MOLLY, Tumbleweed is an explosion of dynamic discordance, mixing driving, confrontational punk acoustic jams with gentle, canorous melodies. The opening track for the album, “Ashtray,” is the perfect introduction to this uniquely focused musician’s fusion of rock, Americana, and acoustic folk.

player

“’Ashtray’ came about because I smoked an ashtray-worth of cigarettes in the half hour that it took to write the song…I had been playing music full time for quite a while. I was tired of finding myself performing at shows that were as empty as my pockets and was frustrated at the state of my life, the world, and the indie art community. I had been listening to a lot of obscure music circulating in the punk scene and had stumbled across a song by another artist which included a lyric that said: “If I found God anywhere it would be by the tracks”. From there, inspiration threw me my own variation on the line that would open “Ashtray”: “Someone asked me if I found God, yes, I think we’ve met a couple times. But, I’m not sure if it was Him ’cause I can’t look Her in the eye” – Matt Pless

Handsome Ghost Headlining Pittsburgh @Cattivo 12/15

downloadHandsome Ghost return to Pittsburgh on December 15th to headline Cattivo

The creative effort of Boston-Native and English high school teacher turned indie-pop songwriter Tim Noyes, Handsome Ghost saw viral success when it’s first demo “Blood Stutter” hit the Spotify charts and racked up over 12 million plays, followed shortly by the release of the Steps EP in 2015 which now has 22 million + streams to date! Handsome Ghost recently released their new EP The Brilliant Glow (which already has over 14 million streams on Spotify) on 9/16 via Photo Finish Records (Misterwives, SHAED) and just wrapped up their two month tour as main support for Melanie Martinez.

Handsome Ghost

A philosophy major, a teacher, a folk singer; these are some of the paths Tim Noyes traveled before starting Handsome Ghost.

Noyes began writing folk songs in college, five hours west of his native Boston. After graduation, he taught English for three years at a Bronx high school, playing shows and open mics in the evenings. The contrast of clubs and classrooms couldn’t last, and a publishing deal encouraged him to risk becoming a full-time musician.

Eventually, Noyes felt himself moving away from folk music. As his tastes became more eclectic, “One month I love R&B and then it’s today’s pop or 90’s hits,” the acoustic world seemed to present certain limitations. At an artistic crossroads of sorts, he considered a possible return to teaching, a move to the suburbs, or joining his father’s family business.

Instead – Noyes poured his doubts into a new project, Handsome Ghost, still crafting every song with an acoustic guitar, but now augmenting them with colorful, electronic production. “I’m in a strange place in my life. I’m not a kid anymore but I know I’m not quite an adult yet, either,” Noyes explains. “I can pretend like I am and I often do, but if I’m being honest, I’m still not there. Many of these new songs live in that lost world between responsible and reckless, between figuring everything out and having absolutely no clue.”

In the generation of ever pro-longed youth, wondering when to grow up isn’t uncommon, but choosing a career in music only exacerbates the extremes.  For all of the perks – traveling the country with friends, performing each night, meeting new people – it’s not without malaise. It’s a life that leaves very little time for hobbies, friends back home, or love. But, when it comes down to one or the other, Noyes picks his music. With an early demo titled “Blood Stutter” going viral on Spotify and their debut EP Steps amassing over 20 million streams, Noyes spent most of 2015 touring the U.S. and writing Handsome Ghost’s debut album, which will be released in the Fall.

“It’s hard to know which parts of the past are worth fighting for and which parts are better to just let go of. Sometimes it seems like you have to cut ties to move forward, but that’s a lot easier said than done. I think a lot of these new songs center around that idea: we know what we need to do to grow, but that doesn’t always help.”

Interview: Robert Schwartzman of Rooney

“Robert is free now,” The text message said.  I confusedly searched for a contact whose face I did not know.  I wandered, asking the staff if the stairs in the showroom led to the so-called Green Room.  I found my in-between person, who led me up the stairs to a room with a few musicians.  Sitting there was a man with gentle brown eyes and flowing hair hidden by a hat.  This man shook my hand and introduced himself as Robert Schwartzman of Rooney.

Robert began has the founder and lead singer of Ed Rooney in 1999.  The band opened their first show for his brother’s band in California.  Robert had stage fright.  “I wasn’t trying to be a singer in a band,” Robert recalls as he got up to search the fridge for the perfect lager, “I was terrified to sing in public.”

After watching his brother, he began writing songs.  It was then that he discovered his true passion for writing music.   He says, “I started to catch that bug that you catch when you just become really addicted to [writing songs].  So I just started writing songs, and then I wanted to perform them.  And then once I got over that hurdle of ‘I’m afraid to do this.’  I felt way more addicted to it.

Listening to Robert talk, I could imagine the shy twenty-something getting on the stage the first time.  His quiet voice led me to believe that the person I saw during our interview would also be the person who would take the stage later that night.  I could not have been more wrong.

That night, as the lights dimmed and the headlining musician prepared to take the stage, the spirit of the many rock stars by whom he was inspired entered him, and his personality changed completely.  Once the guitar was in his hands, he was no longer Robert Schwartzman, he was the single remaining member of Rooney.

The vibe he gave off was contagious.  Even the musicians accompanying him could feel his energy, and they fed off of one another.  Schwartzman bounded around the stage dipping and swaying as he sang originals like “Not in My House” and “My Heart Beats 4 U.”  In between songs, he would thank his fans for coming to see him play, and he would thank the other musicians for playing as well.  The entire show was so energetic, not a person there could stand still during his set.

When the show was finished and the encore, “Stay Away,” was played, the band, Schwartzman included, took some time to talk to fans one-on-one.  People were happily taking pictures and asking for hugs, while Schwartzman’s gentle smile remained on his face.

While Robert Schwartzman is the only remaining member of the original band, Ed Rooney, he does not plan to stop performing under the band name Rooney anytime soon.  “I could start a new project tomorrow, and I’ve experimented with that.  But I don’t think I’m fully happy giving up Rooney because I’ve had a long history with it.  I don’t feel comfortable just walking away from this.  I think it’s going to take the time to rebuild this project into something people care about, but I’m willing to do the work to get there.”

It is very apparent that Robert is proud of his work, and the fan base, as well as his charisma on stage, is proof that Rooney, for now, is very much what it needs to be.

Rooney’s newest album washed away, was released in May of 2016.

Parquet Courts Share “Borrowed Time” And Announce Winter Tour/Pittsburgh 1/8/13

LISTEN TO “BORROWED TIME”

“This record is for the over-socialized victims of the 1990’s ‘you can be anything you want’, Nickelodeon-induced lethargy that ran away from home not out of any wide-eyed big city daydream, but just out of a subconscious return to America’s scandalous origin,” writes Parquet Courts’ songwriter A. Savage in Light Up Gold’s scratched-out liner notes.

The band’s first proper LP is a dynamic and diverse foray into the back alleys of the American DIY underground. Bright guitars swirl serpentine over looping, groovy post-punk bass lines and drums that border on robotic precision. Primary wordsmiths Savage and Austin Brown combine for a dynamic lyrical experience, one part an erudite overflow of ideas, the other an exercise in laid-back observation. Recorded over a few days in an ice-box practice space, Light Up Gold is equally indebted to Krautrock, The Fall, and a slew of contemporaries like Tyvek and Eddy Current Suppression Ring.

Though made up of Texan transplants, Parquet Courts are a New York band. Throw out the countless shallow Brooklyn bands of the blasé 2000’s: Light Up Gold is a conscious effort to draw from the rich culture of the city – the bands like Sonic Youth, Bob Dylan, and the Velvet Underground that are not from New York, but of it. A panoramic landscape of dilapidated corner-stores and crowded apartments is superimposed over bare-bones Americana, leaving little room for romance or sentiment. It’s punk, it’s American, it’s New York… it’s the color of something you were looking for. Light Up Gold is out now on Dull Tools.

“‘Borrowed Time’ is a huge highlight led by a propulsive earworm guitar hook and quick-paced, no frills percussion loaded with momentum.” – Pitchfork
