“I Wanna See Blood is a song about love gone wrong, your basic break up song that ends in a bloody mess. Sometimes love lost just leaves you angry…not sad…not lonely…just bloody angry. Break up songs come in a variety of styles, but this is my anger and my response to a broken heart, I hope people can relate. My two previous songs (Destination Anaheim and unreleased Mojo Man ) were more about the rock world in general. It wasn’t until I started working with Todd Wright that I found a way to express my inner feelings through my music. ‘I Wanna See Blood’ is the first of the songs that we wrote together that delve into my heart and soul. ” – Emma Garell

“I Wanna See Blood is a dancey jam, alternative-rock track about heartbreak and revenge. For fans of Billie Eilish and Mohawks.” – Dylan Lawson (guitarist for Emma Garell)

ROCK’N THE RICHMOND, VIRGINIA MUSIC SCENE WITH CLASSIC BLUES METAL INSPIRED ORIGINALS.

Emma Garell grew up using her singing voice to speak for her. She lulls the listener into a sense of whispered magic, then out of nowhere, she belts with the power of the greats. Friends have called her Princess of Darkness and Roberta Plant…the truth lies somewhere in between as she takes these influences and finds her own sound. Having a wide range of vocal gifts, you won’t be surprised to hear a wide array of musical styling, all within the power of a haunting voice.

If Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was a bar fly in a gritty bar, singing on a Saturday night, you might come close to Emma Garell. One could see her paying homage to the song “Black Velvet” in leather and then fist-pumping the crowd to her Black Sabbath roots. The woman has a smooth growl with a punk’tude and

“Destination Anaheim” is only the beginning.- H. Reavis

With the release of her debut single early 2019, “Destination Anaheim,” Emma Garell is stepping into the rock spotlight with the strength and confidence of her role models and a freshly honed vocal style. Fans can look forward to more singles and a full length album over the next year, as well as continuing to perform locally with the biggest bands coming through RVA.

AMORIELLO Release Lyric Video for Debut Single, “Battle Song (feat. Vinny Appice),” Off of Upcoming, Self-Titled Album

Amoriello - Digitial Artwork 1600x1600

Neo-Classical Hard Rock Project AMORIELLO–launched by renown guitarist, educator, and author Tom Amoriello and featuring former members of Black Sabbath, Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Quiet Riot, TNT, Loudness, Dokken, Impellitteri, and Cacophony–has released a lyric video for “Battle Song (feat. Vinny Appice),” the debut single off of their upcoming self-titled LP. A tribute to metal legand Ronnie James Dio, “Battle Song (feat. Vinny Appice)” includes a thunderous drum solo for 16 bars by the former Sabbath/Dio drummer with an emotional vocal delivery from Nick Z Marino from the current Malmsteen lineup. Impelliterri bassist James Amelio Pulli and ex-Yngwie keysman Michael Troy also contribute their substantial talents to the track.

Player

“The entire AMORIELLO album is emotional, and ‘Battle Song (feat. Vinny Appice)’ is one that takes on the unending conflict between two sides: aggression versus calm, combativeness versus compromise. The music is taut and stormy, then somber and solemn.

The whole album is a testament to the metal legends who inspired me, written with world class musicianship from those same icons. I dedicated this track to Ronnie James Dio (I attended his last concert in Atlantic City, NJ) and wanted someone who had been a part of his sound, hence Vinny Apice. In the course of of recording, showcasing his unique style, he let loose for 16 bars in that incredible solo, and all of the ambitions were met.”

Metal All-Stars Planning To Record Relief Song For Steve Grimmett’s Medical Costs

Metal All-Stars Planning To Record Relief Song For Steve Grimmett’s Medical Costs
Jimmy Kay of Canada’s The Metal Voice streamed a live interview recently with Steve and Millie Grimmett to update fans on Steve’s ongoing medical condition.  Venom Inc.’s Tony Dolan and former Anthrax vocalist Neil Turbin joined the conversation.  It is the second interview Kay has had in the past week’s since announcement of Steve Grimmett’s hospitalization in Ecuador.

During the near hour-long interview, Kay was the first to announce a special fundraiser show in Grimmett’s hometown of Swindon (England).  Planned for April 1, the event is being organized by Brian Keene at Riff’s Bar.  Bands for the event will be announced shortly.

Also announced was a special collaboration of metal artists that are coming together to record Grim Reaper material in effort to help raise additional funds for Steve’s rising medical and recovery costs.  Spearheaded by Dolan, Turbin, Kay, and Sy Keeler (Onslaught), contributors currently include Gary Holt (Exodus), Tim “Ripper” Owens (ex-Judas Priest), Blaze Bayley (ex-Iron Maiden), Doro Pesch, Lipps (Anvil), Marta Gabriel (Crystal Viper), Neil Turbin (Deathriders), Jonas Hornqvist (Bleed the Hunger), Ross The Boss (Manowar), Sy Keeler (Onslaught), Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill), Jimmy Mantas (Venom Inc.), Nick Bowcott (ex-Grim Reaper), John Gallagher (Raven), Mantas (Venom), and more to be announced soon.  The recording will be produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Anvil).

Grimmett’s wife Millie gave The Metal Voice an update on Steve’s medical condition.  “He has now had four operations;  yesterday he had the latest to clean the wound a bit more.  Doctors opened it up and put a drain in to stop any further infections.  The infection has now seemed to stabilize.  The wound, however, has been left open.  He can’t fly until ten days after a big operation so the earliest he could fly home is this Friday.  Because of the pressure of the plane, you have risks of blood clotting and renewed bleeding so we have to make sure Steve can actually survive the flight.  It  is a total of 19 hours door-to-door; it’s a grueling journey for anybody.”

Millie continued, “I have a meeting with the doctor tomorrow morning to discuss how he is doing and other recovery options.  There is another treatment using oxygen.  We are hoping they might be able to do that over the next few days which could speed up the process.  Now that I am here, Steve has perked up a bit and it makes me feel a lot better to see him.  We are alone out here and we want to go home.”

“They are very friendly, very nice,” says Millie of the hospital staff, ”even though we don’t speak the same language.  We still have a laugh, making Steve laugh, making him smile.  They do what they can with what they have.  They don’t have the same resources here.  Steve said to me the other day that last week he was in a ward downstairs and the gentleman by him had heart failure and they didn’t have a defibrillator so unfortunately the gentleman died.  They did all they could.  They have done a great job with Steve.”

Lying on his hospital bed, Steve Grimmett shared a few words, “I am very humbled.  I didn’t realize that I meant so much to other people.  I got no words other than thank you.  And when I’m out on my new leg, I’m going to come out and sing for a big party.”

Regarding reuniting with his wife he added, “it was such a relief to have somebody that I could talk to.  She is not only my wife, she’s my best friend and my soul mate.  It makes everything easier.  I found that in this metal community of ours, we have love and respect for each other and to be fair, I’ve never met any assholes.”

Steve Grimmett has been hospitalized in Ecuador since mid-January; the singer was amidst a tour in support of GRIM REAPER’s latest album, Walking In The Shadows.  Millie Grimmett has been updating fans around the globe of the singer’s condition via the band’s official Facebook page since reports started to surface on January 14.  Grimmett has endured multiple operations that have resulted in the near complete loss of his right leg.

Fans have been making donations to a page set up nearly a week ago to assist in the singer’s rising medical costs afer reports confirmed Grimmett’s insurance company has refused to pay.  Donations can be made HERE.
All forthcoming Grim Reaper dates are cancelled.  Updates as they relate to Steve’s status will be shared via the band’s official Facebook page.
The full The Metal Voice video interview can be seen HERE.
Walking In The Shadows is available now.  Profits from the sale of the album from today forward will be donated to Grimmett’s medical costs.  Visit HERE to order.

PG.LOST Swedish Instrumentalists Stream Versus Full-Length At Decibel; Record To Drop This Friday Via Pelagic + European Dates Supporting Alcest And Mono Confirmed

“At seven songs, Versus runs the gamut from calm and serene to thunderous and powerful, hitting every point in between.” — Decibel

Long-running Swedish post-rock collective PG.LOST will unveil the breathtaking sounds of their fifth full-length, Versus, this Friday via Pelagic Records. A true post-rock masterwork, Versus is brimming with melancholic depth, emotional heaviness, and catchy musical ideas delivered as one in an incredible mass of sound. It’s sometimes easy to forget that there are only four people creating these vast orchestral landscapes.

In advance of its release, today Decibel Magazine is streaming the offering in its entirety noting, “The Swedish instrumentalists have an ear for creating soundscapes that serve as epic listening experiences, and with Versus, PG.LOST makes it clear that their new album is no exception. At seven songs, Versus runs the gamut from calm and serene to thunderous and powerful, hitting every point in between.”

Comments the band, “With a few albums, in hindsight we can proudly say that we’ve achieved something special with Versus and maybe for the first time in ten years we’ve created an album that sonically sounds the way we wanted it to. It’s not the typical post-rock trip but instead it’s a full-bodied intense journey with our recipe of growling bass, heavy drums and wide guitars – but this time surrounded with an electric atmosphere.”

Hear the swelling sounds of PG.LOST’s Versus at THIS LOCATION.

In related news, PG.LOST will support Alcest on Mono on select dates of their their European co-headlining tour. See all confirmed PG.LOST shows below.

Fans of Mono, Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai, Cult Of Luna, EF, Caspian, and Russian Circles pay heed.

Said Echoes And Dust of the offering,Versus is a real gem of an album. There are so many facets to behold, to analyze, and to appreciate. Sometimes it is a sluggish and lumbering beast of a track with slow riffs and heavy tones. Other times, it’s got a driving beat behind it, flirting with post-metal territory. My favorite times are the cinematic passages of electronica-lead calmness, like it was a bonus track from the ‘It Follows’ soundtrack.” In a 9.5/10 review Progressive Music Planet gushes, “Where have you been all my life, PG.LOST?… Too often I think I’ve heard everything but then an album like Versus comes along and shakes me. This is how to make powerful instrumental music.Versus is without a doubt one of the better albums of 2016.” Adds South China Morning Post, “Much like sonic peers Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, PG.LOST create haunting soundscapes through the rise and fall of dense percussion and intricate guitar play, and while they have sometimes lost their way, here they have achieved a harmonious balance.”

The sound of PG.LOST is throbbing with great melancholy, but there’s also a certain element of dirty rock ‘n’ roll found deep within, as in the crushingly heavy closing section of monumental opening track “Ikaros,” in the distorted bass line kicking off the second movement, “Off The Beaten Path,” or in the huge roomy drum sound in general.

The band bought their own studio just before the recordings of Versus, which made the recording process both easier and more difficult. “It’s easy to play around too much when you don’t have studio time that is costing money,” comments guitarist Gustav Almberg. Additionally, the effect-saturated vocals, which were a trademark on previous PG.LOST releases, have disappeared on Versus, and given way to more keys and synths. “Kristian was in the middle of heavy touring with Cult Of Luna playing keys every day during that time, so he had a lot of synth-based ideas for songs. I guess this has helped us to take the band into a bit of a new direction sound wise.”

Zakk Sabbath (Zakk Wylde side project) coming with Clutch and Kyng Oct 1 to Stage AE

zsb_zg_reaperfront_01_2_ZAKK SABBATH is a side project featuring guitarist/vocalist Wylde, bassist Blasko (OZZY OSBOURNE, ROB ZOMBIE) and drummer Joey Castillo (DANZIG, QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE) performing only BLACK SABBATH SONGS.  If that does not get your metal blood rolling then, you are probably dead inside.  With a new  guitar/amp company dubbed Wylde Audio, his worldwide merch and coffee business, and the release of and tour behind Book of Shadows II, where does the man find time?ZW10

Add to this the unbelievable KYNG and legendary CLUTCH, well this could be the show of the year.

Mac Sabbath: Pittsburgh’s Lovin’ It

I must admit, I was skeptical.  I mean, “Drive Thru Metal?”  What about this would work.  A Black Sabbath parody band, appropriately titled Mac Sabbath, almost seemed like an insult to the original band.  I realized, though, that I had nothing to base my opinion on.  Maybe they would be the greatest group to ever enter the Rex Theater.  Parodies are incredible, and this parody group was fully themed down to the paper cup and straw that was their mic stand.  That being said, I loaded my camera, and I enter the Rex Thursday night with an open mind.

I entered the room.  It was poorly lit.  I saw a few dozen balloons scattered across the floor, the small amount of light coming from the stage glistening off of the shiny, inflated rubber balls.  I waited around and readied myself for the first band, Super Fun Time Awesome Party Band, was a bit disappointing.  While they had a stage presence that could captivate an audience, and their light show was great for an opening act.  The quality of the sound they produced was sub-par. Their show was lively, but I was hoping the next band would raise my expectations for the night.

Opener number 2, Only Flesh, was very attention-grabbing.  Classifying themselves, according to their Facebook page, as Glam, Rock, metal, Punk, and Industrial music.  Their set included some theatrics such as sparking bracelets and hooks through necks (yes, you read that right).  Overall, I was satisfied with the performance.  They had a sound that fit them, and the set left me feeling excited for what was next.  Although what was next had me a little nervous.

The following act went by the name Clownvis.  He was in the spotlight a few years back for some inappropriate insults thrown at the judges of America’s Got Talent.  I was concerned, after watching that video on YouTube, that a not-so-nice personality was about to shine through on stage.  Clownvis was actually one of the funniest clowns I have seen to date.  He sang along to classics, such as the Cheers theme song and America the Beautiful, as well as some originals like Barrack-O’s Taco’s.  He even did magic!  He left the stage with a large round of applause, and all that was left was the headliner, Mac Sabbath.

I stood there, waiting patiently as a tarp went up in front of the stage.  The only hints of life behind it were the sound check echoing from the speakers and an ominous shadow with crazy hair occasionally sliding back and forth.  Half an hour went by, and fans were getting restless – and drunk, very, very drunk.  Finally, the music began.  The tarp fell, revealing a cat man, a burger with horns, and drunk, high, and slightly demented form of McDonald’s former icon, Grimace.   As the music played, a clown appeared in a yellow straight jacket.  He wrestled around, breaking free and cackling as if Ozzy Osbourne himself had entered his body.  They began playing songs such as More Ribs, Chicken for the Slaves, Organic Funeral, and Frying Pan.  Throughout the show, theatrics were present.  Confetti flew out of a vomit bucket, water hit the crowd from a ketchup bottle, and lead singer Ronal Osbourne danced around the stage with a straw.  The show ended with the Iron Man parody, Frying Pan followed by a “Mac Flag” song, Pair-a-buns.

Overall, the show, full of great music, gore, theatrics, and maniacal laughter, left me satisfied and glad I came.  I will definitely be looking into more parody bands like Mac Sabbath.

Mixing raucous comedy with borderline-horrific theatrics, the only thing more petrifying than impending health problems resulting from years of overeating is a MAC SABBATH show. Show attendees should be prepared to partake in the fun – MAC SABBATH puts on a theatrical, multimedia stage show – complete with a smoking grill, laser-eyed clowns, bouncing burgers and many more magical surprises… basically anything and everything an unwary show-goer could ever want in their wildest dreams.
“… one of the most interesting bands to come around in a long, long time. They have Dead Kennedys’ outrageous sense of humor mixed with total irreverence and ornate style on top of a solid, engaging performance (even if the crowd is reluctant to respond). So while this whole thing was probably thought up after eating too many pot brownies, it is one of the most brilliant ideas in a long time.”
Troy Farah, Phoenix New Times

“This is not a drill. Be it exchanging Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” for a “Pair-a-buns” or “Iron Man” for a “Frying Pan,” these food-focused musical dweebs are cooking up something hot ‘n’ ready just for you.”Alicia Lutes, MTV.com

“The most impressive-and terrifying-thing about Mac Sabbath is that they’re actually really good. Ronald channels his inner Ozzy onstage, from the manic jumping to the frantic hand waving…” Bryan Rolli, Paste Magazine

“Even if the songs are dripping with onions and extra cheese, Mac Sabbath put on one righteous stage show, complete with smoke machines, gritty power chords, and endless head-banging.”Chris Coplan, ConsequenceofSound.net

MAC SABBATH BIOGRAPHY

It was the Year of Our Lord 2013, and I was devouring a cheeseburger in a Chatsworth, California, franchise of a certain multinational fast food conglomerate, which shall remain nameless. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a crazed looking clown walking in my direction. Wearing a costume of bright yellow and red, and giant shiny shoes, he seemingly fit into the surroundings, but it didn’t take long to see that something wasn’t quite right. His costume was trailed by long, tattered, hippie fringe that was dirty from scraping the floor (and most likely the alley behind the restaurant), and more alarmingly his face was caked in ghostly make up that looked like it had been smeared on with a putty knife. My first thought was that he looked like Skeletor as a member of Uriah Heap. Taking a seat in my booth, he informed me that his name was Ronald Osborne, and he that he was familiar with my oddity rock band Rosemary’s Billygoat. He was a fan of the band, and said he had a concept I might appreciate, something he termed “drive-thru metal.” Some of the delinquent kids who worked for the franchise had been allowing him and a cast of characters named Slayer Mac Cheeze, Grimalice, and the Cat Burglar, to perform secret rock shows in the bunker-like basements of the local restaurants. But the time had come, he said, to bring drive-thru metal up from the “underground,” and he asked if I would consider becoming the manager of his band. I asked him what the act was called, and proclaimed with pride, “MAC SABBATH!” I barely had time to gather up what was left of my faux food before the restaurant’s manager, apparently annoyed both by the disheveled clown and the content of our conversation, came over and forcefully assisted us out onto the street. As we hit the sidewalk, I looked over at Ronald, watched him brush the dust of cold fries, sodium chloride and GMO remnants of my UN happy meal from his grease-smeared clown suit, and couldn’t help but think there was something special, perhaps even great, about the man.

He invited me to one of these secret shows, and two nights later I was sitting in the basement of a fast food restaurant in the San Fernando Valley, my eyes and taste buds tingling to a new sensation. Drive-thru metal was real, and talk about a feast for the senses! Black Sabbath’s music, hilarious fast food lyrics, smoldering clown heads with laser eyes, a giant purple gumdrop bass player, and Tony Iommi with a giant cheeseburger head. I was confused, amazed, and dare I say it, can’t ever remember feeling so………happy! I told Ronald that yes; I would love to manage his band. It wasn’t going to be easy—nothing ever is with a disturbed clown and a band of Monsanto mutants who refuse to reveal their identities because they think they came here from a wormhole in time direct from 1970. But whoever they are and however they got here, they’re here now and they’re ready, so pull up to the window and check your order, because I am proud to present the world’s newest concept in entertainment, the culinary disgrace that is MAC SABBATH!

In 2008 CC released their first ever full-length studio album, a fourteen song, seventy-two minute tour-de-force entitledImminent Eminence. Four years later, Caustic Casanova unleashed 2012’s critically acclaimed Someday You Will Be Proven Correct, produced by J. Robbins.

After the release of Someday You Will Be Proven Correct and a 2012 SXSW tour came the departure the group’s original guitarist, and a most critical juncture for the rhythm section of the band – whether to continue as Caustic Casanova, start another project, or part ways altogether. After much deliberation, drummer/vocalist Stefanie Zaenker and bassist/lead vocalist Francis Beringer decided to honor the work they’d done over the years together by continuing Caustic Casanova. Months of experimenting as a bass and drums two piece were followed by rounds of guitar player auditions, finally yielding the missing element to the new Caustic Casanova, longtime fan, friend and all-around six string wizard Andrew Yonki. In Andrew’s three and a half years with the band, the rejuvenated Caustic Casanova has gigged wherever and whenever possible, embarked on several North American tours, and has earned a much bigger following in DC. In 2014 Caustic Casanova signed to Retro Futurist Records after opening for psych metal veterans and label owners Kylesa, and later teamed up with J. Robbins to record lots of new music and release the first in a series of 7″ singles called Pantheon: Volume 1. Despite losing Stefanie for nearly half the year to severe wrist injuries from a life threatening accident (once again putting the very existence of the band in jeopardy) Caustic Casanova returned stronger, tighter and more motivated than ever to build sonic temples in which to worship feedback, massive riffs, delay pedals, bass fuzz, thunderous drum fills and soaring vocal melody.

The end product of these years of writing and recording through trial and tribulation is Caustic Casanova’s new album and Retro Futurist debut Breaks, once again produced by J. Robbins. Breaks features seven unconventional and melodic heavy rock songs, none quite like the other, and covers a vast sonic territory from dark, driving post-punk to psychedelic post-metal, from heavy doom blues to epic space rock and everything in between. Breaks was released on September 25, 2015, and the vinyl edition, with different artwork, will be released on July 21st, 2016. Look for Caustic Casanova on tour in the US and Canada during July, August, September and October 2016.

Zakk Wylde’s Book of Shadows II Tour packs a powerful punch in Pittsburgh

July 18, 2016 Millvale, PA-  In the sleepy quaint town of Millvale  just five minutes from downtown Pittsburgh there is a sacred rock n’ roll institution known as Mr. Smalls Funhouse.  A former church and now one of Pittsburgh’s finest establishments to see a great show, as well as grab excellent beers and grub, Mr. Smalls this night hosted rock royalty in the name of Zakk Wylde.  Former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne, leader of Black Label Society, and all around badass, Wylde brought a slew of guitar gunslingers to blow our minds and brighten our hearts last Monday.

Opening acts Jared James Nichols and Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown were frighteningly good.  Nichols brand of guitar playing is very much in line with Wylde’s solo work, bluesy Allman Brothers type rock n’ roll.  He absolutely blazes and has great emotion behind every string played.  His band’s work is really blood pumping, fist pounding classic style rock that made them a surprise favorite for many.  Even the cover of Nugent’s “Stranglehold” brought chills and made your hair on your arms stand on end for it’s beautiful and true interpretation.  This three piece (Erik Sandin, Dennis Holm) out of Wisconsin must be on your radar if you love a great bluesman who truly has the touch.  Check them out…www.youtube.com/jjnicholsmusic
www.reverbnation.com/jaredjamesnichols.

Tyler Bryant and his bandmates The Shakedown have been tearing up the road and this is by no means their first stop in Pittsburgh.  Bryant has been recognized as a child prodigy guitar player by many, including God himself, Eric Clapton.  Bryant has the soul of an old blues master and his style shows it.  Staking his rep by moving to Nashville at 17, Bryant has put together a tight and impressive band to match.  Shakedown  members Caleb Crosby, Graham Whitford (Brad Whitford of Aerosmith’s son), and Noah Denney complement Bryant’s guitar like icing on cake.  If you have not discovered these guys yet, you owe it to yourself to witness one of the best blues players around…www.tylerbryantandtheshakedown.com.

You know you are confident in your playing when you let two young guitar blazers open for you.  Zakk Wylde is no stranger to the spotlight but prefers to do his talking through pickups, strings, and wood.  Touring his Book of Shadows II effort, Wylde is accompanied for the most part by his regular band, Black Label Society.  But don’t expect to hear Ozzy or Sabbath covers (although a bit of “The Wizard” on mouth harp was pretty awesome) or a bunch of BLS tunes.  This is the other side of Zakk, the side that has been influenced by blues and southern rock.

The ten-minute opener of “Sold My Soul” was enough to make anyone’s jaw drop as he soared up and down his fretboard with wild abandon.  The crowd was absolutely wowed and entertained from the first note.  Wylde does not spend a bunch of time on stage banter, instead, he keeps the rock rolling as he went into, “Autumn Changes”, “Tears of December”, and “Lay Me Down”.  Wylde and his band just kept pouring out their souls tune after tune, playing like they were in front of 50,000 instead of hundreds.  The well packed Mr. Smalls ate up each moment, sang along and played air guitar.  “Road Back Home”, “Yesteday’s Tears”, “Heaven and Hell” (with the aforementioned “The Wizard” as an intro.), and “Darkest Hour” rounded out the first half of the show (see the entire guest list in pictures below).

To have a fairly intimate setting with Wylde playing his solo material was an amazing treat that does not come around often.  It was fun to see him play piano as well as his trusted axe and sing a bit differently than the more metal oriented BLS.  Zakk will return in October with his new fun project Zakk Sabbath when they open for Clutch at Stage AE Oct. 1.  And the hits just keep on coming…

New RONNIE JAMES DIO Covers Album “This Is Your Life” Celebrates the Life and Legacy of a Legend

Available April 1, 2014 via Rhino

This Is Your Life Pays Tribute To The Late Singer With Covers Of

His Greatest Songs From Rainbow, Black Sabbath, And Dio

Features Newly Recorded Tracks From Anthrax, Halestorm, Rob Halford, Metallica, Motörhead, Scorpions, Corey Taylor, And Tenacious D, Among Others

To Benefit The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund

Ronnie James Dio is one of the most beloved figures in rock history. His gifts, both as a singer and songwriter, are instantly recognizable, whether he was with RainbowBlack SabbathHeaven & Hell, or leading Dio. Sadly, Dio lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010, but his towering voice and legacy live on.

To celebrate one of rock’s most powerful voices, an all-star group of his friends and fans recorded 13 of their favorite tracks for a tribute album that will raise funds for the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund (diocancerfund.org). Produced by his longtime manager and wife Wendy Dio, the album includes contributions by such metal heavyweights as MetallicaMotörheadScorpionsAnthrax, andRob Halford, as well as appearances by many of the musicians who performed with Dio over the years.

This Is Your Life will be available from Rhino on April 1, 2014 for a suggested list price of $18.98. A digital version will also be available.

Although the songs featured on the album touch on the different eras of Dio’s career, several spotlight his time with Rainbow, including Metallica’s epic, nine-minute “Ronnie Rising Medley,” which combines theRainbow songs “A Light In The Black,” “Tarot Woman,” “Stargazer,” and “Kill The King.” Scorpions add a scorching take on “The Temple Of The King” while Motörhead is joined by Biff Byford from Saxon on “Starstruck.” Rob Halford teams with frequent Dio collaborators Vinny Appice, Doug Aldrich, Jeff Pilson, and Scott Warren for “The Man On The Silver Mountain.” The final line-up of Dio’s solo band – Simon Wright, Craig Goldy, Rudy Sarzo and Scott Warren – are joined by Glenn Hughes (Deep PurpleBlack Sabbath) for “Catch The Rainbow,” a track from Rainbow’s 1975 debut.

Anthrax and Adrenaline Mob honor Dio’s memorable stint with Black Sabbath with their takes on “Neon Knights” and “The Mob Rules” respectively, as does a group, led by Oni Logan on vocals along with Jimmy Bain, Rowan Robertson, and Brian Tichy, which performs “I” from Dehumanizer.

This Is Your Life also includes songs from Dio’s back-to-back platinum albums Holy Diver (1983) and The Last In Line (1984), with Doro’s take on “Egypt (The Chains Are On)”, Halestorm tackling “Straight Through The Heart,” Corey Taylor (Stone SourSlipknot) covering the classic “Rainbow In The Dark” andTenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Glass) putting their signature spin on “The Last In Line.” Killswitch Engage’s cover of “Holy Diver,” a hit in its own right when released in 2006, is also included here.

Fittingly, Ronnie James Dio provides the finale (and the album’s title) with his moving performance of “This Is Your Life.” Originally released on Angry Machines (1996), the song’s lyrics explore mortality and are backed by a stark and beautiful arrangement that features Dio accompanied only by his longtime keyboardist Scott Warren on piano. The song serves as a poignant reminder that we will never hear a voice like Dio’s again.

The Ronnie James Dio Stand Up and Shout Cancer Fund, co-founded by Wendy Dio, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable fund dedicated to supporting cancer-prevention research, raising awareness and educating the public about the vital importance of early detection and prevention when dealing with this deadly disease.

Dear Sister: In Solitude Continue Sweden’s Metal Mastery

Sweden has been contributing to the world of metal for decades, but even now in 2013, they always seem to surprise the metal community. Even after bringing legends like Messhugah and stars like In Flames to life, the recent years have been kinder than ever to Swedish metal and the bands it brews. As if this year’s Ghost B.C. album, Infestissumam wasn’t enough, Sweden brings another group of rising metal mavens to North America with In Solitude. Though they’ve been making music for more than a decade, the Uppsala quintet continue to explore the most revered sanctuaries of metal might. In Solitude’s third album is able to rival its stomping and brooding peers in doom metal, but the band’s insistence on capturing the melodic power of Black Sabbath is what makes Sister an album that sneaks past the feet of the monstrous colossi of the genre, all while making a dent in the hull of metal as a whole.

In Solitude’s sound is difficult to classify, but in a great way. They clearly have a respect and reverence for the doom metal titans Black Sabbath. The guitar riffs from axemen Niklas Lindström and Henrik Palm don’t possess the echoing tones of later doom metal bands like Trouble or Pentagram; instead, the guitarists add a rough and energetic tone, one straight out the book of Tony Iommi. By keeping the pace just upbeat enough to prompt experimentation, the songs sound much more characterized. “Pallid Hands” uses the same tones and notes that Black Sabbath made magical, but unlike the countless doom metal bands of the 2000’s onward, In Solitude don’t sound sluggish on Sister. The songs are actually quite interesting compositions, with plenty of fluid guitar solos and vocalist Pelle Åhman sounding off notes like Baroness’ John Baizley, performers far beyond the gloom of doom. In Solitude inject some much-needed personality into a genre whose standards and formulas have been running on fumes lately, and it’s a great gesture from these Swedish go-getters.

But the band still stays firmly fortified in the lower tones and dark chords of the heavier sides. Despite its ripping guitar lines, the title track has Pelle Åhman complemented by echoing effects and the bell-like bass tones from Gottfrid Åhman sound like psalms for a sermon after dark. Drummer Uno Bruniusson rounds out the quintet with remarkably virtuoso drumming variety. While not enough to rival the prog drummer greats like Tool’s Danny Carey or even Sabbath drum legend Bill Ward himself, it’s incredible hearing a fluid, almost jazzy drumming style in metal, one that’s groovy enough to get a circle pit going amongst the bass kicks and snare fills. Sister is an album that does just enough to stay in its genre of choice, but doesn’t follow the supposed status quo directed by the weighted, lurching beasts of modern doom metal. It’s remarkably varied and lets the band experiment with both melody and tone in shockingly creative ways.

At only eight tracks, Sister does end a bit prematurely. While the diversity between the tracks is definitely noticeable, when the songs crack an average of around five minutes, some opportunities seem to be missed. Despite the song’s nice mixture of tone and rhythm, each song stays within its own bubble. Tempo changes aren’t common, so the over-consistency in the tracks themselves is disappointing. The guys in In Solitude clearly have a wealth of talent across multiple metal fields, so it would’ve been even greater to hear another fresh track or two by the album’s end.

After listening to Sister in its entirety, it’s tough to call In Solitude a doom metal album exclusively. It really isn’t one. It’s dark, but not brooding; dramatic, but not sluggish. By taking cues from 70’s metal instead of modern doom metal, In Solitude manage to bring something fresh to the world of epic, dark and atmospheric metal symphonies. There are so many memorable elements to Sister, but the most resounding success is the band’s ability to combine thunderous rhythms with nimble guitar and vocal melodies. Even at its worst, Sister is refreshing, a diamond in the rough for the genre that takes notes from unexpected influences and interesting metal subgenres. It’s difficult to envision where In Solitude will go from here, but rest assured that Sister is a solid album that challenges conventions while never buckling its own weight. Check it out.

Survival (featuring Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy) Playing Smiling Moose August 18

Survival (featuring Hunter Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy) will be playing upstairs at the Smiling Moose on August 18. The group is currently touring in support of their self-titled debut which was released earlier this year via Thrill Jockey.  Survival channels the dark, progressive sound favored by groups like Black Sabbath, Magma and Aphrodite’s Child. After playing together for more than a decade, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Greg Smith and Jeff Bobula recruited producer Colin Marston at the Thousand Caves studio in New York to cut a record that captured the full grandeur of their complex compositions. Filled with syncopated riffs, intricate rhythms and atypical time signatures, the album serves as a thunderous showcase of the trio’s unique musical sensibilities.

328_1440
Their LP Survival is an album of dark and meditative heavy rock. Hunter Hunt-Hendrix, Greg Smith, and Jeff Bobula have
been playing together for over a decade and recorded this album as Survival with Colin Marston (Krallice, Dysrhythmia) at The Thousand Caves. Syncopated riffs, intricate rhythms and atypical time signatures create dramatic and complex melodic lines that provide a bed for chant-like lyrics.  The group opperates as a collective, writing lyrics, riffs and singing with one voice. The album is a unique document that harkens back to post-hardcore, Black Sabbath, Magma,Aphrodite’s Child, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Aaron Copeland, The Smashing Pumpkins, and the first wave of math rock.  The galloping “Tragedy of the Mind” opens the album, triumphantly proclaiming, “Ending begins.” On “Since Sun” and “Tragedy (Reprise)” the group also employs acoustic guitars to
create a hushed atmosphere of contemplation and reflection. The final song, “Triumph of the Good,” provides the Survival’s most cathartic moment; as the distorted, almost baroque guitars slowly ascend and get louder the group collectively sings “Forgive us” before all of the instruments line up to create a massive rhythmic assault.
Survival was born out of the ashes of band Birthday Boyz, whose 2007 tour of China was documented by Vice TV for an installment of the Music World show called “Rock Under the Red Flag.”. The songs on Survival emerged after years of retooling and rearranging, with the riffs, melodies, and song structures evolving gradually over time.

Black Sabbath’s New LP ’13’ Now Streaming In Full

Black-Sabbath-13-album-art-604x569

The release of Black Sabbath’s brand new album ’13’ with 3/4 of the original members, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Tony Iommi (along with Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilk) is right around the corner.  But waiting until June 11 may prove excruciating for some, so The Godfathers of Metal have released a stream of the entire record over at iTunes…be sure to find the Black Sabbath graphic on the home page to listen to the full album.

Singer Ozzy Osbourne recently spoke to the BBC about the album’s leading single, ‘God is Dead?’ and how the inspiration for the track came up. “I was in somebody’s office and there was a magazine on a table and it just said, ‘God Is Dead’, and I suddenly thought about 9/11 and all these terrorist things and religion and how many people have died in the name of religion,” Ozzy describes. “When you think about the tragedy that’s happened throughout time, it just came in my head. You’d think by now that their God would have stopped people dying in the name of, so I just starting thinking that people must be thinking, ‘Where is God? God is dead’ and it just hit me.” (loudwire.com)

“Essential.” REVOLVER (4/4 stars review!)

“An indispensable oral history of an often misunderstood musical genre.”

KIRKUS REVIEWS (a starred review!)

“I’m not saying this just because I’m in the book, but . . . if you love metal, great stories, and music history told by the people who made it, then Louder than Hell is a must-read.”

—ALICE COOPER

“…the authors’ inclusiveness give this examination a weight that is just as heavy as the music.”

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

“This is the best oral history I’ve read since Please Kill MeLouder than Hell is the first book that really delivers the brutal truth from the mouths of the artists and key players themselves!

I couldn’t put it down.” —MATT PINFIELD

Compiled from over 400 interviews conducted by respected music journalists Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman, LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal (It Books; May 14, 2013; Hardcover; $32.50) is a chronological history of heavy metal, told through the words of the men and women who created it, played it, re-invented it, and continue to rock it.

Revolver senior editor Wiederhorn and Nights with Alice Cooper producer Turman dug deep into their extensive list of contacts to uncover never-before-heard stories, eye-opening admissions and the truth behind metal’s most explosive legends. Candid and confessional commentary comes straight from icons of the genre, including: Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Dickinson, Eddie Van Halen, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Lita Ford, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Axl Rose, Slash, Corey Taylor, Dave Mustaine, Chuck Schuldiner, Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond, Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Slayer’s Kerry King, Phil Anselmo, Rob Zombie and more. With an introduction by Scott Ian of Anthrax and an afterword by Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and with two 16-page photo inserts, with some never-before seen candid shots by celebrated rock photographers Stephanie Cabral and Robert Matheu, this is the book metal fans have been waiting for.

The many musicians interviewed by these veteran journalists offer their take on their influences, touring, the music business, and songwriting, as well as their often-traumatic upbringings, battles with substance abuse, and bizarre sexual exploits. Industry insiders (including managers, record label executives, family members, friends, scenesters, groupies, journalists, and porn stars) provide additional insight.
From the creation of Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, to Judas Priest’s development of the leather-and-studs look, to Metallica introducing the world to thrash, to the inception of Ozzfest, to Faith No More accidentally creating the first hybrid of rap and metal, to the provocative exploits of the Sunset Strip scene, to the death and destruction surrounding Norwegian black metal, LOUDER THAN HELL gets to the meat of the metal matter:

  • Rob Halford of Judas Priest reveals how he kicked cocaine and alcohol in 1986 after tragically witnessing his boyfriend’s suicide and sought solace in spirituality, which has helped the Metal God stay clean to this day.
  • Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose talks about the early days of Guns N’ Roses, the making of the 36-million-copy-selling debut Appetite for Destruction, and how Robert Willams’ graphic cover art was censored.
  • Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi explains how he lost parts of his fingers while working a day job in a factory – and created homemade prosthetics so he could play guitar, which changed the tonality of the instrument and the sound of heavy metal forever.
  • Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson shares how he dug through his own vomit in search of the balloon of heroin he’d swallowed to avoid being arrested by the police, and then used that heroin to celebrate his victory over not getting busted.
  • Members of Metallica and Anthrax detail the horrifying events of 1986 when Metallica’s tour bus crashed and tipped over, crushing bassist Cliff Burton beneath it while the rest of the members escaped relatively unscathed.
  • Alice Cooper reveals how it was really wheelchair-bound members of his AUDIENCE who tore the live chicken apart during his fateful concert in Toronto, while Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne give first-person accounts of Ozzy biting the head off a dove while wasted during a high-level record company meeting, and decapitating a bat onstage during his Diary of a Madman tour.
  • Hellhammer, drummer of Norway’s pioneering black metal band Mayhem, talks about ex-vocalist Dead committing suicide and how guitarist Euronymous used a chunk of Dead’s brain to make a Mexican stew.
  • Biohazard guitarist Billy Graziadei details how gang bangers stabbed a member of the group’s posse with a hunting knife while shouting, “Payback, Motherfucker!” and how the band vowed to retaliate. Vocalist Evan Seinfeld also recounts his graphic sexual liaisons while on tour, and how they led to his career in porn.
  • Slipknot bassist Paul Gray (who died of an overdose at age 38 during the writing of LOUDER THAN HELL) discusses the evolution of the lineup; physical fights between band members, and his own struggles with addiction.

LOUDER THAN HELL explores the transformation of metal culture, with stories and anecdotes straight from the mouths of the most infamous and successful bands. Filled with hundreds of revealing interviews representing every type and era of heavy metal—from metal progenitors such as Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and the MC5 to current day innovators including Slipknot, Mastodon, and Lamb of God—LOUDER THAN HELL is the ultimate look behind the curtain at one of our most dynamic, controversial and enduring musical genres.

Advance Praise for LOUDER THAN HELL:

Louder Than Hell comes straight from the twisted minds of rock icons and flows seamlessly through various eras of heavy metal. You hear from the guys that were there on the stage, in the pit, puking in the gutter. It brought back memories, and I even learned a few things I never knew. I really dig this book.”  —Riki Rachtman, DJ, VJ

“Books on the history of even something as cool as metal can be a bit antiseptic and boring—not this one. It’s the story straight from the horse’s mouth. Even better is when the horses have experimented with drugs and black out occasionally. . .” —Brendon Small, creator of Dethklok and Metalocalypse

“Who likes rock n roll here?? Well if you do, this is the book for you! Every rock has been overturned, every band has been analyzed, quoted, and lionized and every page offers a new fact or figure that you probably didn’t know. This is the definitive chronicle of all that is heavy metal and I’ve read them all!”  —Chris Jericho, Fozzy

“Katherine Turman and Jon Wiederhorn know metal. Louder than Hell is an amazing gathering of different breeds of heavy metal rockers telling the tales metal fans want to hear.”

—Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine

“This is the book every metal fan should own. A fascinating high-octane chronicle of metal mayhem that takes readers on a wild ride, from metal’s earliest days to the head-banging present. I’m not saying this just because I’m in the book, but . . . if you love metal, great stories, and music history told by the people who made it, then Louder than Hell is a must-read.”

—Alice Cooper

Louder than Hell is a love letter to the misunderstood genre of heavy metal music, written by trusted companions who had a front row seat on the devil’s rollercoaster. The definitive chronological testimony by the people who were there, including some who are no longer with us.” —Mark McGrath, Sugar Ray and co-host Extra

“An amazingly comprehensive book on all eras and genres of hard rock and heavy metal. The stories and attention to detail make it an instant must for anyone who ever was or is a fan.”

—Eddie Trunk, DJ and host of “That Metal Show” on VH1 Classic

Ugly Kid Joe debuted at an odd time. It was a transitional period between the dirty metal world of Guns N’ Roses and the rise of alternative music pioneered by Nirvana, R.E.M., and Jane’s Addiction. Even odder was the band’s commitment to keeping classic metal and hair metal alive, even when flannel shirts outclassed leather vests. Ugly Kid Joe proved successful in their love of hard rock and metal, catapulting the band from California startups to radio heavyweights. The band’s legacy is easily one of the most underrated of its time, so it’s all the more exciting that the band has reunited after over 15 years of silence. While Stairway to Hell isn’t going to make any new fans for Ugly Kid Joe, the fact that the band can still make their music sound so potent and full of soul is something that any band, new or old, can definitely learn from.

Lead vocalist Whitfield Crane is a talented singer, one whose snarl harkens back to that of Ozzy Osbourne’s during the early Black Sabbath years. To complement Crane’s vocals is some excellent guitar lines from axemen Klaus Eichstadt and Dave Fortman. Opening track “Devil’s Paradise” will ravenously rip and tear through your speakers with razor-sharp precision. The opener doesn’t sound dated in the least, only showing that Ugly Kid Joe still possess the chops to put many of today’s rock newcomers in their place. Conversely, the more subdued “No One Survives” is a haunting track that mixes in just as much Metallica composition as it does Black Sabbath. It’s creepy and very atmospheric, standing out amongst the in-your-face anthems of the rest of the album.

Interestingly enough, songs like “I’m Alright” and “You Make Me Sick” are recordings that detail a very different vibe in Ugly Kid Joe’s sound. The band’s reverence for the works of 70’s Black Sabbath is clear, but there’s always a dirty filthiness in the band’s sound, not unlike recordings by Mötley Crüe or Guns N’ Roses. Ugly Kid Joe were never afraid to mix their grinding loves of Sabbath with the faster and more energized rock of California 80’s metal. Stairway to Hell retains that reverence at every opportunity; it’s like they never left at all.

However, Ugly Kid Joe’s weakness lies in the songwriting itself, which drags its feet more than it should. “Love Ain’t True” possesses a trumpet line during the chorus, which feels out of place among the sheer metal that permeates the rest of the album (it might work in the world of ska rock, but it doesn’t work here). The acoustic tracks like “Another Beer” fare better, but are brief interludes between Ugly Kid Joe’s ferocious and grubby heavy metal. While many of the songs themselves are fine and keep their sounds alive, there aren’t many surprises on Stairway to Hell. The inclusion of an acoustic rendition of their hit cover of Harry Chapin’s “Cat’s in the Cradle” is a fond throwback to their most commercially successful single, but the album thrives in the fact that Ugly Kid Joe can still perform their music with such precision and resolve. It’s just a shame that Stairway to Hell doesn’t make any left turns throughout its tracklist.

Ugly Kid Joe’s first recording with new material in over 15 years holds true to its promise. Stairway to Hell demonstrates a resolute control of their many, many influences. The traces of sludgy Black Sabbath rhythm sections, the dirty 80’s heavy metal guitar solos, Whitfield Crane’s slithery wail: they’re all there and they all sound great. The songs themselves, however, don’t possess the refinement that the band’s musicianship does; the compositions just don’t reach out far enough to be surprising. Stairway to Hell doesn’t break new ground for the band, but the fact that they still sound so strong and intense even after 15 years is remarkable. Expectations be damned: Ugly Kid Joe are back.

BLACK SABBATH UNVEIL RELEASE DATE OF UPCOMING ALBUM ’13′ + NEW STUDIO FOOTAGE

by Graham ‘Gruhamed’ Hartmann March 13, 2013 12:33 PM  At Loudwire.com

Black Sabbath‘s upcoming album ’13′ has finally been given a solid release date! The highly anticipated record will be unleashed on June 11. Sabbath have also launched a pre-order campaign for ’13,’ offering everything from a simple CD to a ‘Super Deluxe Box Set.’

’13′ was originally meant to feature the classic lineup of Black Sabbath (Ozzy OsbourneTony Iommi,Geezer Butler and Bill Ward), but due to a contract squabble involving Ward, the iconic drummer dropped outof the Sabbath reunion. In his place, Rage Against the Machine stickman Brad Wilk manned the skins on the forthcoming album.

Guitarist Tony Iommi’s cancer diagnosis also threw a wrench in the works for Black Sabbath’s 2012 world tour plans, but the master of the riff heroically pressed on, constantly writing and recording new material throughout his ongoing recovery process. Thankfully, any doubts harbored by Sabbath fans have been squashed now that ’13′ has an official release date of June 11.

As a Black Sabbath fanatic down to your bones, you may have trouble deciding which pre-order offer to dedicate your money towards, but fear not, here’s a breakdown of the goodies Sabbath have made available. If just pre-ordering a CD isn’t enough for your Sabbath fix, the band is also offering a double CD in a deluxe soft pack, which contains an extra album of exclusive bonus audio. ’13′ will also be printed on 12″ heavyweight (180g) vinyl in a gatefold sleeve.

Finally, for the hardcore fans, there’s the Super Deluxe Box Set containing the double CD and vinyl pressings of ’13,’ along with an exclusive DVD of the documentary ‘Black Sabbath – The Re-union,’ plus five behind-the-scenes videos, a download card containing exclusive track-by-track interviews with the band, 13 exclusive photographic prints and hand-written album lyrics by members of the band.

Black Sabbath have also unveiled a new three-minute video of producer Rick Rubin in the studio with Sabbath. In the clip, Rubin directs Black Sabbath through recording their new material, which is showcased in bits and pieces throughout the video. Although we only get a few seconds to peek into what has become ’13,’ the sound presented is quintessentially Black Sabbath.

Tracking the guitars was such a blast, as I plugged in my white-and-black Charvel, my trusty ol’ MXR Phase 90 and went right into my cranked-up Marshall JCM800, entering that EVH zone and giving my all to pay tribute to one of the greatest rock guitarists ever! We had a great time with Mike Portnoy’s idea to insert a medley of kick-ass VH parts in the mid-section while going into a great treat before we head back to the final chorus!”

Coverta is an eight-track EP featuring cover versions of some of the band’s favorite songs. Long-time fans of Mike Portnoy are aware of the multiple cover CDs he has released with Dream Theater and with Neal Morse. Coverta is the first CD of covers recorded by ADRENALINE MOB.

ADRENALINE MOB: OMERTA/ In Pittsburgh 3/14

NEW ALBUM: OMERTA OUT NOW/In Pittsburgh @Altar Bar3/14

ADRENALINE MOB features Russell Allen (Symphony X), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold), and Mike Orlando (Sonic Stomp)

ADRENALINE MOB will be releasing an eight-track EP on March 12, 2013 entitledCOVERTA, featuring cover versions of some of the band’s favorite songs, including songs by Dio, The Doors, Black Sabbath and many more.  Given band members’ respective pedigrees selling millions of albums and perform for sold out crowds globally, fans everywhere will soon be taking the vow of OMERTAin their honor.

On their full length album OMERTA, the group cranks out one bruising hard rock anthem after another.  Songs like the first single “Undaunted” and “Hit the Wall” hijack the right level of instrumental intricacy and taut technicality while grooving and moving fluidly,”This is a new band with a new sound and a new beginning,” declares Portnoy.  “Forget what everyone has done in the past.  I’ll cherish and look back on my 25 years in Dream Theater with great pride, but it’s time to begin this next chapter.  It’s similar to how Foo Fighters gave Dave Grohl a fresh start.  That’s how I look at it.”

Hitting on the heels of OMERTA, and shining a light on the band’s influences, comes COVERTA – a new eight song EP of cover songs.  COVERTA highlights the many different sides of the band.  Tracks like Led Zeppelin’s “The Lemon Song” and The Doors “Break on Through” are real credits to the group’s musical history.  Paying, “…tribute to so many great bands and putting out our own spin on it shows a lot of diversity within Adrenaline Mob,” says Orlando.

Pittsburgh Music Magazine will be covering their show at Altar Bar on 3/14…we highly suggest you break Omerta, tell all your friends, and be there…

PMM Interviews Renaissance Man William Control: AKA Wil Francis of Aiden

Renaissance man. That is how I would describe Wil Francis AKA William Control. He’s a writer, producer, engineer, performer and as his press kit puts it, “a willing ambassador to the outside world for black sheep everywhere”.
Stepping outside of his role in Aiden, Wil takes on the alter ego of William Control to bring the electronic dark wave that is reminiscent of New Order, Bauhaus, Gary Numan, and Depeche Mode. Although this genre of music is not my first choice on my iPod, while listening to Control’s latest effort “Silentium Amoris”, I was deeply impressed with the lyricism and the respect and reverence with which Wil pays homage to his influences. But don’t let those influences that you assume stop at 80’s synth pop and New Wave. Wil grabs from Sinatra to Cash to Sabbath.
Silentium Amoris has a thematic bend to it, (a) “journey about finding a voice in
the rubble of a broken world…a stepping-stone in the development of a protagonist who is seeking revenge. It is proof that one can come to his senses through otherwise unconventional means – pleasure and pain – and come out better able to fight through the obstacles set in his path. London, Paris and Berlin serve as the gritty backdrop for this utterly unwholesome romp, intertwining fantasy with harsh reality”.
Wil’s performance at The Altar Bar was an extremely high energy romp that had the dark tone and atmosphere of a Lord Byron party on ecstasy. The sold out crowd ate up all that Wil threw at them and at times the high squealed screams of the girls (and some boys) was overwhelming.
Check out our interview with Wil where we discuss Morrissey, Black Sabbath, writing poetry and lyrics, capitalism and music, the book he is writing, and much more…
