SUPERJOINT will be touring in support of their Caught Up In The Gears Of Application full-length.  The record, which Loudwire crowned, a raw exercise in riffing devastation and swirling, erratic tempo shifts,” is SUPERJOINT‘s first proper studio offering in over a decade. Recorded at the famed Nodferatu’s Lair, produced by SUPERJOINT co-founder Philip H. Anselmo (Down, Pantera, Scour, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Arson Anthem etc.) and Stephen Berrigan (Down, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Eyehategod, Haarp, Classhole, etc.), and mastered by Scott Hull (Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Pig Destroyer) at Visceral Sounds, the thirty-eight-minute bruiser spews forth an unapologetic crossover of hardcore punk, metal, and uncompromising, antagonistic, New Orleans-style angst.
Various order bundles, including limited edition vinyl options and authentic woodwork from their “Caught Up In The Gears Of Application” video are available via Housecore at THIS LOCATION. For digital orders, point your browser HERE where you can also stream the record in full.
SUPERJOINT was resurrected in 2015 after the original band broke up a decade earlier. At the behest of the late Corey Mitchell, co-founder of The Housecore Horror Film Festival, SUPERJOINT founders Anselmo, Jimmy Bower (Down, Eyehategod), and Kevin Bond (Christ Inversion, Artimus Pyledriver et al) joined forces with longtime comrades, drummer José “Blue” Gonzalez (Warbeast, Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals), and bassist Stephen Taylor (Philip H. Anselmo & The Illegals, Woven Hand, 16 Horse Power). A new era of the band was born. After just two tours, new material followed culminating in the scathing sounds of Caught Up In The Gears Of Application.
“[Philip H. Anselmo’s] tenacity seems undeniable, and that spirit shines through Caught Up In The Gears Of Application from beginning to end.” – Blabbermouth
“SUPERJOINT are looking to add a vicious and philosophical third chapter to the band’s legacy.” – Loudwire
“…a great mix of southern rock and hardcore punk… if Down ever got really angry and decided to knock out a punk record, this is what I imagine it would sound like.” – Metal Injection on the title track

“This is gnarly and nasty… the music is as potent as ever. A storming return. – The Sludgelord

SUPERJOINT‘s music is like a poison that you want to keep drinking, a spirit that doesn’t age, and never heals – but it’ll kill time. There is creative genius in these guys.” – New Noise Magazine
“The volatile, acidic savagery that the band is known for is just as present now as it was before they went on hiatus over a decade ago….” – Metal Nexus

BATTLECROSS To Hit The Road This March With Protest The Hero

Detroit, Michigan-based metallers BATTLECROSS will be joining Canada’s Protest The Hero as direct support on the band’s spring US tour, set to commence March 1st in Buffalo. Tickets go on sale thisFriday, January 24th.

Guitarist Tony Asta comments; “BATTLECROSS is very excited to hit the road with Protest The Hero! They seem like a very successful, humble group of guys who don’t take things too seriously yet are serious about the business — a good role model for all modern bands and we can’t wait to get to know them on the road. Oh yeah and they’re shredders! Being direct support is a huge honor and we won’t let anyone down. This is a very unique tour package and we can’t wait to play to new crowds as well as expose some of our fans to bands they may not have seen yet. See you all in the road this spring!”

BATTLECROSS’ latest effort, War Of Will, saw the band on the road as a part of 2013’s Rockstar Mayhem Festival and debuted at #134 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, #118 on the Top Current Albums chart, #2 on the Heatseeker chart, #15 on the Current Hard Music chart, #16 on the Hard Music Overall chart, and #32 on the Independent Albums chart. It didn’t stop here though, as the band also debuted in Canada’s Soundscan charts coming in at #178 Top 200 Current and #25 Hard Music Charts while also landing on the iTunes charts for release date at #103 on the Top 200, #10 on Rock, and #2 on Metal! This marks the band’s first ever Billboard chart debut! War Of Will also peaked at #3 on the US iTunes metal chart on the day of release.

“Metallica-approved thrashers…catchy and direct-the secret behind BATTLECROSS songs is that they’re short and not so sweet.” — Revolver Magazine

“The overall result falls somewhere between the sheer aggression of traditional thrash and In Flames’ sense of humanity, with nods to the technical ecstasy of metal’s founding fathers along the way.” — Metal Hammer Magazine (UK)

BATTLECROSS sound like the bastard offspring of Kreator, Children Of Bodom and Dragonforce…metal fans will lap this up like a cat with a bowl of cream.” — Big Cheese Magazine (UK)

“The level of musical and compositional progression here is startling, to be quite honest…The effect as a whole is energetic and fist-pumping to the extreme, ushering in a beacon of hope for American metal in 2013.” — Zero Tolerance Magazine (UK)

“Pound for pound, the Detroit thrashers deliver one of the most eye popping, headbanging, horn throwing live shows in heavy metal. 10/10” — Outburn

“Whoever said that the metal genre has become stale and boring has clearly never heard of Michigan’s Battlecross!” — New-Transcendence.com

“All told, War Of Will is a compact and exhilarating experience from BATTLECROSS, who are able to capture the feeling of old-school metal without needing to prop themselves up with nostalgia, instead allowing their love of the genre to shine through with every chugging riff, every solo, and every crazed fist pump.” — Allmusic.com

WACKEN WINNERS CRIMSON SHADOWS ANNOUNCE FIRST EVER U.S. DATES WITH BATTLECROSS

Epic Canadian death power metallers and 2013 International Battle for Wacken winners CRIMSON SHADOWS have announced their first ever U.S. tour dates, supporting Battlecross (Metal Blade Records) later this month with stops in Pittsburgh (1/22), Cleveland (1/23), Toronto (1/24) and Detroit (1/25). The list of dates are availableONLINE and below.

“We are really excited to be making our way south of the border, its something we have wanted to do for a while now and to be sharing the stage with our friends in Battlecross makes it that much better! We have also decided to unleash a couple brand new tracks we have wrote for our next album on this mini tour so everyone will get a taste of whats to come,” says drummer Cory Hofing.

Winners of the 2013 International Battle for Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, Crimson Shadows beat out some of the best in Canadian underground metal bands such as Vesperia, Hollow, Dissension, Adrenechrome and more. 39 independent Canadian bands competed over nine qualifying rounds, three semi-finals, and a national final that was judged by Glen Drover (Megadeth / Testament), Martin Popoff (BW&BK / HardRadio), Sarah Lutz (Metal Blade Records), Noel Peters (Inertia Entertainment), Adam Sewell (Stereo Dynamite Records /Monster Voodoo Machine) and Rob Urbinati (Sacrifice).  The band went on and competed in the finals at Wacken against winning bands from over 30 countries and won the battle, along with various endorsements and other prizes.

Crimson Shadows’ first full length

‘Glory on the Battlefield’ was released in 2012, followed up by an EP “Sails of Destiny” in 2013, and are quickly gaining fans and followers all over the world with their Canadian twist on Epic Power European metal with alternating death and clean vocals. The first single from the EP, ‘Maiden’s Call’ can be heard here.

The band teamed up with Metal Blade’s up and coming thrash/melo-death act BATTLECROSS and the decision was made to take Crimson Shadows on the road for their first ever U.S. dates.

“We met the dudes in Crimson Shadows last year when their drummer offered to fill in for ours when he was unable to play a show in Canada. We kept in touch and were introduced to Crimson Shadows, and they blew us away with not only their talent and energetic live show, but an amazing work ethic and humility that we look for in a band. We think that American fans are going to love them and we’re proud and honored to introduce them to America,” says Hiran Deraniyagala of Battlecross.

Pre-sale Ticket buyers of any of the four shows will be entered to win an ESP LTD Horizon Guitar courtesy of ESP. The Toronto show will be held at El Mocambo and tickets can be purchased here.

“Crimson Shadows fuse pure metal and death metal in an entirely new way, with flavor, passion and a steel fire burning in their bellies. I love the way they combine the high flying guitarmonies of pure metal with the grit of pure death metal.” -Two Guys Metal Review

“After the impressive debut “Glory On The Battlefield” Canada’s CRIMSON SHADOWS return with an powerful (EP) sure to satisfy fans of Melodic high speed Death Metal. This iron borne Toronto outfit continues their death quest for the glory of the throne. For once it is experienced; fans will surely spout the words of praise, power, and glory, while swilling the ale of their ancestors.”-Metal Temple

BATTLECROSS Year end Thank You 2013, Back in Pittsburgh 1/22

As you are hopefully aware, Battlecross are headed back to Pittsburgh to The Smiling Moose on Jan. 22nd.  What a wild ride it has been for the boys from Motor City in 2013.  Just during last year Pittsburgh wasblessed to have see them last Halloween at a killer show at Altar Bar, at Mayhem in the summer, and at The Smiling Moose in the winter.  So, let’s kick off 2014 right and pack the SouthSide’s Smiling Moose again.  Listen, these guys are unreal live and they are destined to play huge venues…this will probably be the last time you have a chance to see them so up close and personal.  Then you can brag to all your friends how you saw them way back when in a small club and you can show them your pix with them after the show and blah blah blah.  Until then check out their year end thank you.

Battlecross return to Pittsburgh!!!

Time to get up close and personal with my good friends in Battlecross again!  This time our heavy metal heroes from Detroit will be hitting the intimate setting of The Smiling Moose in SouthSide on January 22, 2014 as they get warmed up for their European trek and some amazing dates with Killswitch Engage, Trivium, and Miss May I.

Don’t miss this opportunity to get up close and personal with a band that just continues to rise the ranks and are destined to become HUGE!

Halloween Havok with Death Angel, Battlecross, 3 Inches of Blood, Diamond Plate, and Revocation: Pix and Interviews

A Dark, rainy, and dreary Halloween night in Pittsburgh, PA.  The historic Strip District was once again packed with headbangers, some dressed for the holiday, gathering for a spectacular line-up of metal a The Altar Bar.  Even though the weather was gloomy it truly was a perfect setting for an evening of thrash metal at it’s finest with a cast of characters that to an outsider would seem as all the same, but the crew here knew that the idiosyncrasies between each band made their uniqueness miles apart.  This was going to be good.

Personally, I was pretty pumped to see Death Angel.  I could not believe that I had never seen these guys live despite the fact that I jumped on their bandwagon in my senior year of high school in 1987 when all the buzz was going on about these young kids who were my age and making waves.  I really loved their second release “Frolic” and their cover of Kiss’ “Cold Gin” and their U2 (of all things) influenced “Bored”.  Even though Rob Cavestany is the only original member left, Mark’s been around since ’84 and Ted since 2001 have been.  They are all still metal to the core, and they totally were everything I could ever expect and more.  (Listen to Mark’s interview with us a few weeks before the show here).  The new material from The Dream Calls For Blood sounded excellent live and it was such a cool vibe to be seeing the show on Halloween with all in costume and just destroying the crowd who were eating up every moment.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have seen Battlecross every time they have been in Pittsburgh ever since they came here for the Trespass America Tour at Stage AE and blew everyone away.  I got to talking with them that day and this site has in many ways grown with them. Each time when they return and we meet back up it’s like catching up with old friends.  So, while you may cry bias to a review, I must say they improve each time I see the band.  Their stage presence and tightness is getting better and better.  The new material from War of Will is damn good live and the crowd went absolutely crazy with every song, fists pumping, singing along, and moshing madly- my bias notwithstanding.  Listen here for an exclusive interview with Hiran (guitar) for all that is happening with Battlecross…

Diamond Plate opened the show and as such you would expect a low crowd turn out or possibly less enthusiasm.  Not so tonight.  Diamond Plate has been doing things their way since their inception in 2004 when they were in high school.  Continuing to kill it on the road and work it ‘old school’, these guys are genuine metal and Pittsburgh absolutely loves them.  With solid tunes from their second effort “Pulse” and vocalist Matt Ares adding new dimensions, one cannot help but get swept up into the infectious energy of the band.   Check out this video interview as we hopped onto Diamond Plate’s RV to discuss “Pulse” and all that has been happening in their corner…

3 Inches of Blood from Canada were definitely a special treat as they hit the stage all made up in their Halloween outfits and playing a more 70’s tinged metal.  Cam Pipes was awesome with his high pitched wail and menacing presence, made even more menacing dressed as a bloody ghoulish priest.  Opening up with “Leather Lord” from Long Live Heavy Metal was brilliant and the perfect way to set the tone.  If the crowd had not done so already, let the merch table be raided and the downloading begin because these guys are awesome and just pure fun for metal fans.

Revocation is one of those bands that is just so full of talent it’s hard to believe.  They are really doing unique stuff when a lot of so called metal bands are just rehashing and copying our heroes.  The Boston boys may not have brought the banjo tonight, but they were dead on and displayed their blend of technical and thrash metal with wild abandon.  They pull off some very difficult tunes live brilliantly and with great stage presence giving the fans exactly what they pay for and more.  Revocation is a band that has to be caught live to truly appreciate how good they really are and make sure you chat them up at the merch booth because they are super cool guys as well.

MARK OSEGUEDA OF DEATH ANGEL talks to PGH MUSIC MAG/Live @Altar Bar 10/31

The Dream Calls for Blood, the follow up to Bay Area thrash legends DEATH ANGEL’s crushing Relentless Retribution (2010), was recorded once again at Audio Hammer Studios utilizing the production services of Jason Suecof (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, GOD FORBID, TRIVIUM). It finds DEATH ANGEL at the height of their powers, summarily fired and inspired by the exhaustive three years touring mounted for the last record, a worldwide onslaught that found the band fully welcomed, as vocalist Mark Osegueda explains, into the pantheon of thrash mastery…

“We finally did some shows with the big four guys, some festivals with SLAYER in Europe. We toured three legs with the ANTHRAX/TESTAMENT/DEATH ANGEL tour, throughout North America, plus we did the METALLICA Fillmore shows. We did some festivals with MEGADETH, so we touched on all the big four. We’re getting the word out that we are a relevant force in this type of music, a force to be reckoned with, because we’ve still got this young anger in us (laughs). Our stage show still completely delivers the goods, back to back with the younger thrash bands or the older thrash bands. We’re very confident in our live performance and we hold our own. And we think this next record is going to solidify that we also do that in the studio.”

Mark took some time the evening of October 3 to talk with Pittsburgh Music Magazine before their appearance at Altar Bar on Halloween night Oct. 31 in PGH to talk about the new record, touring, playing with the big four and newer bands today, and much more.  Listen here…

DEATH ANGEL’s previous album Relentless Retribution sold around 2,700 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 10 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. The record also came in at #188 on Billboards Top Current Albums chart, making it DEATH ANGEL’s highest charting record since the bands reformation in 2004.

Our brothers in arms Battlecross return to Pittsburgh with an amazing lineup of talent: Death Angel, 3 Inches Of Blood, Revocation, and Diamond Plate all at Altar Bar on 10/31!  One hell of a way to spend Halloween!

To cap off an extremely successful 2013, Battlecross has announced that they will be supporting Death Angel on their fall headlining tour! Battlecross will join the tour’s other supporting acts 3 Inches of Blood, Revocation, and Diamond Plate for a tour that begins on October 18 in San Francisco and wraps on November 10 in Santa Ana, CA. Tickets are on today/tomorrow in each city.

A new performance demonstration video for “Flesh & Bone” from “War of Will” has been posted to metalblade.com/battlecross. The video features Tony Asta, Don Slater, and Hiran Deraniyagala performing their individual parts to the track that proved to be a fan favorite on the road. “Flesh & Bone” was the soundtrack to walls of death all summer long on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, and popular metal blog, skullsnbones.com, even put together a compilation of fan-filmed walls of death from different cities on the tour. Watch those videos now at skullsnbones.com HERE!

“War of Will” debuted at #134 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, #118 on the top current albums chart, #2 on the heatseeker chart, #15 on the current hard music chart, #16 on the hard music overall chart, and #32 on the independent albums chart. “War of Will” also peaked at #3 on the US iTunes metal chart on the day of release.

“The level of musical and compositional progression here is startling, to be quite honest…The effect as a whole is energetic and fist-pumping to the extreme, ushering in a beacon of hope for American metal in 2013.” Zero Tolerance Magazine (UK)

“Get ready for Battlecross to move up to headlining status by the conclusion of this album’s touring cycle. War Of Will is a rallying cry for American metal, synthesizing the best of all sides of the extreme, thrash, and modern genres to champion for the genre.” DeadRhetoric.com

HUNTRESS Hosting “Virtual Yard Sale” For Mayhem Festival Tour Support

photo1creditneilzlozowe

HUNTRESS has generated a massive amount of buzz since the release of their debut album Spell Eater in 2012. The follow up to last year’s kill is Starbound Beast, to be released on July 2nd during the band’s run with the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Huntress is about to embark on the biggest tour opportunity of their new career, as well as the most demanding and expensive. HUNTRESS has teamed up with fellow Mayhem brothers Battlecross to share the cost for a bus this summer, since their tour vans can’t handle the extreme heat. And that is only the beginning of the financial strain for a young metal band with minimal tour support.

HUNTRESS has started an indiegogo (Virtual Yard Sale) campaign to ensure their participation in the festival. Check out their indiegogo page HERE, featuring enticing packages and unique collector items. Some of the perks offered are signed CD DigiPaks and Vinyl of their upcoming album Starbound Beast, and packages that feature tickets to Mayhem Festival plus hang outs with the band. Water balloon fights, parking lot BBQs and Astrological readings with Jill Janus are also offered up for sacrifice. Some of the most exclusive perks include the sword prop and red cloak from the “Eight of Swords” video, and Blake’s 1979 Custom GMC Vandura. More items and unique opportunities will be added as well.

In more HUNTRESS related Mayhem news, vocalist Jill Janus will host the first ever Shred-Meister guitar competition.  Festival attendees can go to the Jägermeister tents on site and audition for a chance to shred for 10 seconds on the main stage. Each day, one of the 10 finalists will win a custom Jägermeister guitar from Schecter and the overall winner at the end of the tour will win a custom Jägermeister full stack and head courtesy of Peavey Electronics.

Starbound Beast will be released on June 28th in Europe and on July 2nd in North America via Napalm Records.  The band recorded the album at Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles, CA, working with famed producer Zeuss (Shadows Fall, Hatebreed, Agnostic Front).  The artwork for Starbound Beast was created once again by Vance Kelly (Slayer, Ghost B.C., Mastodon).

HUNTRESS has just revealed the first song off the new record titled “I Want to Fuck You to Death”, co-written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. To hear the streaming version now, check out the HUNTRESS Facebook Page.  Click the “LIKE US TO DEATH” tab or visit this direct link: http://a.pgtb.me/jsQf9xx

HUNTRESS was spawned from the preternatural union of Jill Janus with underground metal bands Professor and Dark Black. They thrive on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos and catchy choruses that come from the band’s musical concoction of occult science and bong rips. HUNTRESS remains true to the roots of melodic heavy metal with a penchant for thrash, death and black metal.
HUNTRESS Lineup:
Vocals: Jill Janus
Guitars: Blake Meahl
Guitars: Anthony Crocamo
Bass: Ian Alden
Drums: Carl Wierzbicky

Listen for your chance to win tickets which grant you full access to the GWAR-B-Q, “Meat and Beat”, the “B4BQ”, and the “GWAFTER PARTY EVENT”, plus the chance to become GWAR’s “Slave for a Day”, which could entail duties as critically important as draining the pus from Pustulus’ scabby leg-enders, to sitting around backstage in everybody’s way while getting completely hammered until you are thrown into a trash dumpster. What fun!

Standard Ticket – $30: All Day Event Entry – all the bands, all the fun, all the flailing! Completely free for the low price of 30 bucks!

Deluxe Ticket – $40:All Day Event Entry – all the fun, farts, and flailing, as well as an “official” 2013 GWAR-B-Q T-shirt, actually rubbed on Beefcake’s ass at one point or another.

Premium Ticket – $100: All Day Event Entry, Official GWAR-B-Q T-shirt, GWAR-B-Q2012 DVD, (see if you can find yourself throwing up) and an exclusive laminate VIP Pass for the “Meat & Beat” signing, where you can meet and hang out with the band, take photos to your hearts delight, and watch in horror as your hot or not hot girlfriend is dragged all too willingly into the special “Abyss of Abuse”, to be sullied in ways unthinkable. This ticket also includes free admission to the “B4BQ“, and the GWAFTER PARTY EVENT, where you can hang with the band and the artists of GWAR in a rare out of costume experience.  More details will be announced in the coming weeks. You will also have the chance to win an opportunity to appear on stage with GWAR, and be ground into pulp in our gore-choked meat grinder.

For those of you who were just born, or simply didn’t give a shit (which is practically unthinkable!), the GWAR-B-Q is GWAR’s annual summer slaughter-fest presenting some of the heaviest, most awesome bands the metal and punk scenes has to offer. Stemming from it’s original roots as a semi-annual party, the event has grown every year in the scope of its majesty, and this year promises to be the most incredible one yet, with a lineup that includes such heavyweights as Richmond hometown heroes Municipal Waste, the legendary Corrosion of Conformity, the aural devastation of Pig Destroyer, and a very special reunion of the infamous X-Cops, who are coming out of hiding after a 17-year hiatus spent running meth labs in Ecuador (and a host of other naughty things).  All the original members shall reunite for the GWAR-B-Q to open for the mightyGWAR.

“Just because we have all of the original members doesn’t mean the band hasn’t been progressing,,” said Cobb Knobbler, the X-Cops gay, satanic, Nazi bass player,. “I for one have been exploring the world of drug dog law enforcement…not handling the animals, but actually becoming one, through a series of extremely painful and expensive surgical procedures…the results of which I plan on unveiling at the actual GWAR-B-Q., giving me the legal right to ravage your genitals in search of cocaine!”

At this point the lineup for the days entertainment has been finalized, and two stages will barely be enough to present the enormous rock and rock spectacle that Slave Pit and Ring-Dog Rescue (http://ringdogrescue.org)shall present. The set times have yet to be finalized, but it should run something like this…

GWAR

Municipal Waste

Corrosion of Conformity

Pig Destroyer

Cannabis Corpse

Loincloth

X-Cops

Warbeast

Battlecross

Wilson

Mobile Death Camp

Volture

Kung-Fu Dykes

And if that’s not enough, there is plenty more filthy fun to overload your senses, leaving bloated, beastly, and completely broke. There will be more meat than ever, and boatloads of GWAR’s new “GWAR-B-Q” sauce to slather all over it, as well as GWAR’s new beer to wash it down your bottomless and gaping feed-hole. Just like last year, the affiar will be held at the only venue capable of handling such a stupendous event — the legendary Hadad’s Water Park…check out the details at http://hadadslake.com/

So get ready to experience the ultimate spectacle of music, meat and mayhem, as the undisputed Masters of Shock Rock prepare to unleash the greatest GWAR-B-Q in the history of this non-stop orgy of sun, fun, meat, murder, music, and straight up MAYHEM! What started years ago as a party for GWAR‘s wretched Slaves has mutated into a bonafide festival that grows every year in the scope of its debauchery.  Come take part in this Barbaric Bacchanalia!

Damn the torpedoes and let slip the dogs of war! Hail GWAR, hail Flattus, and gather with the tribe of GWAR in Richmond, VA on or around Saturday August 17th, 2013. But get there a day early for the “B4BQ” and then get ready for what is certain to go down in history as the greatestGWAR-B-Q yet!

PMM’s Top 5 Metal Releases of 2012

2012 has been a pretty amazing year for Pittsburgh Music Magazine, hell it was the year of our inception. Many of you may have noticed that although we cover all genres around here, two of our writers are pretty serious metalheads. To try to narrow down the top 5 metal moments of 2012 is a pretty hard task, it was a very good year for releases in the genre that very few are brave enough to adore outloud and even fewer truly understand. Metal has progressed and has so many classifications at this point that one needs Sam Dunne’s charts from VH1 and Wikipedia just to wade through it all. Trust this writer, it has been an amazing year in music, and just keeping up with all that is going on in the little niche of tunes I adore can be no small task. So with further adieu, here are PMM’s Top 5 Metal Masterpieces of 2012:

betweentheburiedandme2012
1. Hands down without a doubt, Between the Buried and Me’s: The Parallax 2 Future Sequence is the metal record of the year. With an unbelievable mix of prog metal mastery, this band refuses to slow down and seems to only get better. Many of their peers think the same, just check out some different band comments on Facebook (i.e. Mike Portney (Faith No More/ Ozzy) or Scott Cowan (Deception of a Ghost)). Brutal one second, soothing the next, piercing and thought provoking all the next…don’t miss this one whatever you do.

2012DeftonesPress1071112

2. The “comeback” of the year was The Deftones. Many of you probably expected me to say Soundgarden, and that is definitely honorable mention, but Chino and crew have come back with a vengeance. Koi No Yokan is the best since White Pony and is ear bending from first note…like they never went away. Sickeningly talented and devastatingly brilliant.

witchcraft-header

3. Witchcraft, the little doom/stoner rock band from Sweden, swept me off my feet this year with Legend. A bit Queens of the Stone Age meets Sabbath and Deep Purple thrown in with some Soundgarden grungy mix. It’s 70’s metal with a new twist.

gojira_68b-credit-gabrielle-duplantier (1)

4. French metallers Gojira provided the soundtrack for our trip from Pittsburgh to Cleveland to catch this years Mayhem Festival. Un-freakin-believable. I still can’t get enough of this record and everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I discover more. Best thing they have ever put out to date, solid from end to end.

5. So many could sit at this spot. And I am going to totally cheat…a four way tie. Periphery, Battlecross, The HAARP Machine, and Deception of a Ghost are all “newer” bands that have infected me this year and made me a loyal fan. Please check these guys out and tell them we sent you when you go see them…for they all bring it big time live. Go buy ALL their CD’s now- you won’t regret it!

We Have Seen the Future Of Metal and it’s Name is Battlecross

On the last night of a club size headlining tour Battlecross are tearing down equipment and preparing to head home to various outskirts of Detroit, Michigan. The excitement on lead singer (Kyle) Gumby Gunther’s face is palpable. Not just because they played a killer set in front of a very loyal Pittsburgh crowd, but more importantly because he gets to go home to see his son. Life long friends since kindergarten, guitar players Tony Asta and Hiran Deraniyagala, are jovial and glad handing the fans as they file out of the venue, eager to get to work on their sophomore effort to follow up the crticically acclaimed and fan adored ‘Pursuit of Honor’. Don (bass) and Mike (drums) are busily getting all the eqipment prepped to get back to the motor city for what may become one of the most important Januarys in their lives.
Metal Blade recording artists Battlecross have been afforded some amazing touring opps for good reason. They are the next big thing. There really is no debate. PMM had the great pleasure of catching them at Stage AE in Pittsburgh this summer on the Trespass America Festival. Battlecross put in one of the most vicious and brutal sets of the day, winning the crowd over and making a true impression. The band certainly remembers Pittsburgh and their awesome experience as one of the best days of their tour (and PMM can’t thank them enough for sporting our shirts throughout the tour!). We did not hesitate to make it to their headlining performance in Pittsburgh at The Smiling Moose in Southside.
Last night on December 19, 2012 Battlecross gave a performance that will forever be burned into those lucky enough to witness it. It was tight, concise, fun, brutal, passionate, and empowering. In short it was everything that we all love metal for. These guys are carrying the torch of the great ones and taking it to the next level. Drawing from their influences and expounding on them with their own flair and flourish, Hiran and Tony are amazing guitar players that have a sixth sense when it comes to how their work interacts with one another. The back and forth rhythym and lead is a second nature that requires no communication, unless these guys have acquired telepathic powers (which is entirely possible given their history). Don Slater’s bass playing punctuates the high end whilst at the same time is a blistering example of some of the most incredible low end work in metal today. Mike Kreger’s drum technique is top notch as well, and he certainly has the technical skills and fluidity to distinguish himself from the hoarde of other double bass beaters out there. And of course there is Kyle, or as many know him as, “Gumby”. Gumby’s voice has great range, from the gutteral sqwual that is required of all thrash vocalists to the melodic musings of an era gone by in metal. He commands an audience with rapt attention, fists in the air, devil horns waving in unison and chanting the words with him, the crowd is mesmerized.
For those of you who unfortunately missed a performance of a lifetime, PMM offers you our exclusive interview with Hiran before the show with some great insight into what is going on with Battlecross now, what 2013 holds in store, and some awesome bands to check out. Also, check out their performance of ‘Push, Pull, Destroy’ at The Smiling Moose in Pittsburgh:

BATTLECROSS: Sirius XM Liquid Metal to Premiere New Studio Cover of “Hostile”

Yesterday, Detroit, MI’s BATTLECROSS finished their run with the TRESPASS AMERICA festival, also featuring Five Finger Death Punch with support from Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Emmure, Pop Evil, and God Forbid. Helping to cap such a defining summer in the band’s already accelerating career, Sirius XM Liquid Metal will premiere the band’s studio cover of the track “Hostile” (originally performed by Pantera) on Friday, August 31st. Afterward, the track will be available for purchase on iTunes. The band performed “Hostile” live at several stops on the TRESPASS AMERICA festival (last night’s performance of the song included a guest appearance by Five Finger Death Punch’s Chris Kael).

“TRESPASS AMERICA has been a blast. We can’t believe it’s all over. It’s been a wake-up call, a learning experience, and a privilege to be part of this kick ass festival,” states guitarist Tony Asta. “We’ve made so many new friends along the way and it’s very humbling to see so much support from all our fans. Thank you all for making this dream a reality.”

Tony continues, “We are very excited to release our cover of “Hostile” on Sirius XM with Pantera being heavily influential to the band. Rest in peace, Dime. Now crank it to eleven!”

The band will be taking part in the Metal Blade Records 30th Anniversary Label Showcase, sponsored by Scion A/V Club! The showcase takes place on Saturday, September 15th at The Glasshouse in Pomona, CA. The show is free with RSVP (strictly required) and space is limited. Battlecross Draw The Line in Pittsburgh

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Battlecross opened up The Trespass America Festival yesterday in Pittsburgh at Stage AE and proved they are a force to be reckoned with. With an onslaught of metal music pointed right at your ears, this band is sure to be headlining the festival stages in very short order. The Pittsburgh crowd was completely lost in abandon when the powerful music belted them full throttle. It was readily apparent what an impression the band made on the crowd by the enormous line gathering up CD’s, posters, t-shirts, and autographs. Battlecross is a group of musicians who are very gracious, fan friendly, and hard working in their pursuit of metal domination. If you missed them be sure to take the short road trip to Wheeling West Virginia where they will be playing a club date in September (http://www.metalblade.com/battlecross/). Definitely check out their new LP Pursuit of Honor. PMM gives it pure heavy metal hands up.

With the mindset to create a sonic metal assault unlike any other, childhood friends, Tony Asta and Hiran Deraniyagala, set forth on the path to shred and abandoned the idea of following any trends. The guitar slinging duo brought an infused style of old school metal with dark elements of thrash and death metal and destined to find the right members.

Struggling for years to find reliable and dedicated members, the true formation of BATTLECROSS was born in 2007 when Drummer Mike Kreger responded a want ad, and added a machine-like, brutal precision on the drums, and proved to be just the right match for Tony and Hiran’s mature and technical style of thrash. Bringing a whole new level of musicianship and intensity with his quick finger picking and tasty solos, Bassist Don Slater joined the group, bringing a skill and technique that impresses even the most prolific bassists. The thrash metal band was finally complete when popular area vocalist, Kyle “Gumby” Gunther joined the band. Known for his command of the stage and alternating deep growls with high pitched screams, Gumby punishes the audience and inspires pits of rage.

Together, the five-piece create an unforgettable and energetic live show that decimates their audience with raw energy and persistence, that has earned a style of their own: “Blue Collar Thrash Metal”, in reference to the hard-working, ‘never give up’ attitude of those who hail from the Motor City.

This reputation for technical talent, humility and kick ass live shows resonated throughout the regional metal scene and BATTLECROSS soon became a fan and band favorite. Sharing the stage with the likes of Dying Fetus, GWAR, Devil Driver, The Absence, Vital Remains, The Faceless and Metal Fests throughout the Midwest, BATTLECROSS began to bang heads nationally with a nod from MySpace-A Place for Metal’s 2008 ‘Best Unsigned Metal Band’ contest, for being ‘Metal Sucks’ worthy, Mike Kreger’s crowning as Sickdrummer.com & Zildjian’s ‘Sickest Dirt Fest Drummer’ and featured on local, national and global metal radio.

After years of persistence and dedication, BATTLECROSS is celebrating their hard work and prolific future by signing with Metal Blade Records. “We are extremely honored to join such a respected label and humbled by their belief in our music. We’re stoked to be part of a label that has a great roster of bands we all admire and respect!” says Tony. Hiran adds, “We understand the hard work and pavement pounding that is required of a Metal Blade band and we are going to work our asses’ off to show the world what we’re about”

Battlecross Release New LIve Video- In Pittsburgh 8/14 Tresspass America Festival

Detroit, MI’s BATTLECROSS and Bloody-Disgusting.com have just released a brand new, live music video for the track ‘Kaleb’, cut from the band’s latest Metal Blade Records release, Pursuit of Honor. The video happens to be directed and edited by Ryan Glisan of death metal band and label-mate Allegaeon. The live footage in the video was filmed at the July 13th kick off date of the TRESPASS AMERICA festival in Broomfield, CO.

“Kaleb is the one song on the album that I’m the most proud of because I wrote it about my son,” states vocalist Kyle “Gumby” Gunther. “To have this be the track that Ryan used is really special to me, because seeing the intensity of our first arena show with such a hard-hitting song really gives the world a good idea of how much I love my boy. As a band, we’ll never forget that show. We were nervous as all hell!”

The TRESPASS AMERICA festival is still at large, also featuring headliners Five Finger Death Punch, with support from Killswitch Engage, Trivium, Emmure, Pop Evil, and God Forbid. Incorporating many elements of extreme thrash, death and tech metal, creating a precise blend of fist pumping brutality, intensity, and drive, BATTLECROSS satisfies both the tech-metal guru and the old-school die hard alike.

The band’s Metal Blade debut is set to release August 2nd, 2011, followed by a tour that will bring a face melting thrash metal assault. The band’s Metal Blade debut was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Random Awesome Recording Studio in Bay City, MI and produced by BATTLECROSS and Josh Schroeder.

Battlecross Join Trespass America Festival

Detroit, MI thrashers BATTLECROSS are currently making waves across the United States as the next big thing in heavy metal while touring with the Occupation Domination tour. BATTLECROSS will continue to slay the states with Origin, Cattle Decapitation, Decrepit Birth, Aborted, and Rings of Saturn through the tour’s close in Lawrence, KS on May 18. Earlier this week in California, the band filmed a video tour update and TRESPASS AMERICA Festival preview message, now available for viewing exclusively at MetalInjection.net.

The TRESPASS AMERICA festival is a newly minted music festival set on revitalizing the metal scene with some of the most current and credible bands in hard rock/metal. Co-produced with Metal Hammer, the biggest metal magazine in the U.K., the tour kicks off July 13 at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, CO, and will cover 31 cities in two months between July and August across the United States. BATTLECROSS will be joined by headliners Five Finger Death Punch, as well as the reunited original line-up of Killswitch Engage. The TRESPASS AMERICA Festival also features Trivium, Emmure, Pop Evil, and God Forbid. Tickets are on sale now; log onto http://www.trespassamerica.com for complete details.

BATTLECROSS has come a long way since their recent signing with Metal Blade Records and their release of their debut Pursuit of Honor in August 2011. Since its release, the single ‘Push Pull Destroy’ was the #1 Most Requested Metal Track for five weeks (Sirius XM Liquid Metal Devil’s Dozen), remains a stable on the Liquid Metal channel, and the track’s video has racked up over 700,000 YouTube views in the last five months. BATTLECROSS has received killer reviews across the internet and in print publications throughout North America and overseas and was named “Band of the Month” in Metal Hammer Norway and Metal Hammer Spain, so it should be no surprise that this blue collar, hard-work ethic that comes from the band’s five musicians – Kyle “Gumby” Gunther/vocals, Tony Asta/guitar, Hiran Deraniyagala/guitar, Mike Kreger/drums, Don Slater/bass – translates into a potent force on record as well as on stage. BATTLECROSS is also confirmed to sail the seas with the first annual MAYHEM FESTIVAL Cruise this December 7-10.
