Following up the incredible response to their newly released debut EP, The Talk, the video for the title track of which premiered on Rolling Stone, hotly buzzing Columbus, OH rock band SOUTH OF EDEN has released a raw, unflitered video for their cover of the 2003 AUDIOSLAVE hit single “Show Me How to Live.” Filmed live at Sonic Lounge Studios in Grove City, Ohio and premiered with the legendary SPIN, “Show Me How to Live” was directed, filmed and edited by John Payne of Payne Productions.

South of Eden (formerly Black Coffee) are: Ehab Omran [lead vocals, acoustic guitar], Justin Young [lead guitar, vocals], Tom McCullough [drums], and Nick Frantianne [bass]. The Columbus, OH quartet have already performed alongside everyone from the Foo Fighters to System Of A Down, and invite you to join them on their journey of looking at rock ‘n’ roll through a modern lens.

We want to open up the doors for rock in the modern era,” exclaims Ehab. “We want to sound the way we hear rock in our heads—vintage with a sprinkle of today. We try to give listeners the feeling of discovering the genre for the first time. We think now is the moment to be a rock band.

The band has already paid their dues to reach this point. Growing up in Columbus, OH the band formed by combining their passions and uniting over their love of music. Originally from the country of Jordan, Ehab primarily listened to the Arabic music his parents would play, in addition to superstars like Michael JacksonPhil Collins, and James Brown. After coming to America, he was introduced to a wider range of music that inspired him: eighties and nineties rock including Guns N’ Roses and notably Queen. Just like Freddie Mercury’s parents, Ehab’s parents didn’t agree that a life in rock ‘n’ roll was the best thing for their son. However, as he met the rest of the band, his dream became a life affirming reality.

Ehab and Nick performed together in various bands (channeling Iron MaidenRed Hot Chili Peppers, and Alice In Chains) and eventually joined Justin and Tom who had been working on their own band (influenced by Van Halen and Black Sabbath). Justin, who was at the time attending Berklee College of Music, describes first writing with Ehab and noted “The first jam was crazy. He came over with Tom and just listened for a while. We had the riffs to songs, and he just immediately started singing. Here I had gone to music college to find people I could mesh with stylistically, only to come back home and find that my best friend and a singer that I had already known about were all I needed!

This newfound discovery lead to a fast-paced evolution. As Tom noted, “We didn’t have a bass player, bass amp or a bass! Ehab wrote most of the bass lines on guitar and we grooved so well. We were a band for like a week before we had booked our first show two weeks out. We ended up borrowing equipment and we became a band.” As they continued to tour, they crossed paths and shared bills with Puddle of MuddRed Sun Rising and recently graced the main stage of Sonic Temple and Epicenter in 2019. That very same year Jason Flom caught wind of the band and signed them to Lava Records.

When it came to recording, they honor the methods of those who come before them and “tape in a vintage way, with no click track, pitch correction, copy-paste, or any of that nonsense.”

The musicians headed to Los Angeles to record with legendary GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Greg Wells [Adele Twenty One Pilots, Deftones]. “When I first heard the band, it had its own original identity,” explains Greg. “That was something I had waited years to find. I emailed them back saying, ‘I want to be your Mutt Lang’.”

Ehab notes “It’s a mixture of a lot of things. We’re ‘classically rock’ influenced, but listen to so many different genres and eras that there are a lot of different feelings in our music.”

On the lead single Ehab describes “We knew we wanted our first release to showcase our personalities, both in the music and the visual. “‘Dancing With Fire’ is just that; personality. It’s a song about conflict, and to us that conflict is being a bunch of twenty-two-year-olds attempting to make it as a rock band in unprecedented times. We’re excited to see how people interpret the song into their own lives.”

When you hear us, I want you to walk away thinking, ‘That was honest and different’,” Ehab leaves off. “We’re just doing what we do. We’re proof you can do anything you want and shouldn’t compromise your dreams.”

The Small Town Titans are a power trio from York, PA who love to constantly create, as well as play live. Gone is the notion that a rock band should only release 10 songs at a time every 2 years. In a world where music fans crave new content constantly, the Small Town Titans aim to deliver their brand of art all of the time, drawing inspiration from a new wave of rock bands such as Highly Suspect and Royal Blood, and rock legends such as the Foo Fighters, Audioslave, and Deep Purple. Thanks to their efforts at assembling their own studio in a basement, STT can create and release songs, podcasts, live online concerts, and more with no rules. This artistic change in attitude stems from touring for the better part of 2 years, and realizing how difficult it really is.

After coming home from their last 30 day run, the band had made $4,000. After repairing their vehicle, restocking their merchandise and more, the band was left with $1,000. After putting most of that back into the band’s funds as usual, each member took home $150. This startling reality made STT take a step back and evaluate themselves as a band, a brand, and a business. After firing their manager, the boys soldiered on with the help of their team at Round 2 Records. They began to truly treat Small Town Titans as a legitimate small business more than ever before. Unnecessary expenses were cut, and more creative and innovative sources of new revenue were explored, such as utilizing the direct to fan creation platform Patreon, where the band is currently making $200 every time they release a new song on YouTube.

Instead of trying to make a million fans, STT is focusing on the fans they already have. With a love for playing live, a Small Town Titans show has evolved into more than a concert. It’s an event, with a set list that’s decided right before the show, and plenty of stage banter in between songs. The band simply hits the stage to deliver an energy driven show using guitars, drums, and their voices. Nothing more, nothing less. This approach to their live performances has led to them sharing the stage with acts such as Highly Suspect, Papa Roach, Black Stone Cherry, Pop Evil, and more.

By focusing on their engagement on social media and managing themselves, Small Town Titans are growing like never before and having more success as a business and a brand. The band just wrapped up a weekend long recording session at Hybrid Studios with friend Kevin Soffera, drummer for Seether on the 5x platinum selling record “Disclaimer II”, and who STT also recorded their last album “Reflection” with. Six brand new songs were recorded live in the studio, as well as professionally filmed by Springwood Productions at the same time. These new songs and videos will be released throughout the rest of 2017 and 2018. Songs range from the hard hitting “Me, Myself, and Monster” and “Wreck” to the ballad “Dragonfly”, an emotional song written in memory of Phil’s mother, who passed away earlier this year due to cancer, performed live with just one voice and an acoustic guitar.

Small Town Titans are actively forming a team of like minded individuals in the new music business who are just as driven and passionate as they are, rather than waiting to be discovered. Train Tough it out Despite Rainy Night

On a rainy Friday night, the citizens of Pittsburgh (and a lot from Erie actually) toughed it out to see Train play what was close enough to be a hometown show for lead singer Pat Monahan who lived in Erie, PA as a kid.  With that being said, anticipation was high for them as they were about to take the stage, as for me on the other hand… I personally was unsure of what to expect.

 

As much as I never like to use the first person until the end of a review, I have to be honest and say I never listen to the radio, only my own music.  When listening to Train play the other night I’ve come to realize that anytime the radio did happen to be on my stereo, or any other time I walked into a grocery store, Train plays quite literally every other song… this is no joke.  My personal thoughts kept repeating and it sounded like a broken record, “I didn’t know they played this song.” “They play this song too?” “Really?  They play that song as well?” “So they play every song on the radio ever?”  At this point, I was unsure whether to be impressed because they had so many popular songs or to be kind of disappointed in a band that only plays catchy hit singles of their own.  One thing for certain, the crowd loved and sang along all night long with Pat and it seems as if they made a great career choice for themselves in the long run.

 

Upon watching Train’s performance, aside from the catchy songs that were being performed, and the guest appearances from the opening acts to help with a couple of songs (check setlist below), the performance by the band was somewhat boring.  This is not me being biased, just stating a fact that no one really moved around at all on stage except Pat, and even then all he did was walk side to side the whole time; there just wasn’t a whole lot of energy it seemed.  During the third song, he was taking people’s phones and taking selfies with them which was very cool of him, and later on the double guitar solo from Luis Maldonado was pretty great, but aside from those two things, the show relied on the display screen in the backdrop to entertain the crowd with images, colors, and lights.  That was a lie, there was one more interesting thing, Train played a song titled “Marry Me” so their bus driver could propose to his girlfriend mid-song on stage.  FYI she did say yes.

 

As we were getting towards the end of the show, and they came back out for their encore songs, they dedicated a song to the recently lost Chris Cornell and played a “Black Hole Sun” exactly as it is performed by Soundgarden.  Personally, it sounded great, the interest of everyone else though seemed as if they didn’t even know the song or even care about it because it was the complete opposite of every other song played that night.  It was kind of upsetting to not see any support for that song but more importantly, Chris Cornell.  Probably because everyone at the show had no clue what that song was.

 

To wrap this up the show was overall consistently good throughout the night, but was lacking in the true concert experience I felt as if nothing really stood out to me.  The same experience could have been felt by watching a youtube performance or just turning on the radio.  I give Train a lot of credit for creating so many catchy and popular songs over the past few years, I just wish the show would have been less of a “greatest hits” show and more of an actual performance.

SEETHER LURKS INTO STAGE AE

When you think about a crowd at a rock concert, there are a lot of different scenarios that can come to mind. You may think about teenagers, in dark clothing and piercings, or you may think of the older classic crowd, who are wiser and well taught in the art of rock and roll. Either way, there are several different types of fans in the rock and roll genre, and you would’ve found all types of fans this past Friday at the Seether concert in Pittsburgh.

Before Seether, however, there were two powerful opening acts to get the crowd energized and moving before the main event, both having one specific thing in common, they were both fronted by women. Starting with the first band Kaleido, a rock band from Detroit, fronted by Christina Chriss. This band opened the show with a bang, playing songs off of their first full-length album Experience,  which was released this past Friday. The album is based on the ideas of real people, with real emotions, and their real stories. Following Kaleido, Letters from the Fire hit the stage. The band is a group of five members, based out of California, all except for their front woman Alexa Kabazie, who was born and raised right here in Pittsburgh. This up and coming band kept the crowd going, playing songs off of their current album, Worth the Pain, which was released back in 2016. If you haven’t heard of either of these bands yet, I highly recommend you look into them and become a fan now, because they are definitely heading to the top.

After a half hour break, fans are packing the place full for the main event, and the room goes black. The lights come up, and four mysterious black figures have appeared on the stage. The figures were none other the members of Seether, Shaun Morgan, Dale Stewart, and John Humphrey, and Clint Lowry of Sevendust, who they recruited specifically for the tour. That is what they remained for most of the night, just four black figures with instruments, but that didn’t stop them from bringing life to that stage. Playing not only songs from their new album Poison the Parish which was released earlier this year under Shaun’s new label imprint Canine Riot Records,  but songs off of older albums as well, such as “Nobody’s Praying For Me” off of their 2014 album “Isolate and Medicate“, the band kept the crowd going for the remainder of the night. The band also performed “Broken” off of their “Disclaimer II” which was released in 2004, with Alexa Kabazie, who filled in for Amy Lee‘s portion of the song. The song was played as a tribute to the recently deceased rock icon, Chris Cornell, who passed away earlier this week. It was non-stop music for a good hour and a half, as the instrumental music continued in between each number. Needless to say, it was a good night for rock and roll in Pittsburgh this past Friday, and we hope to see Seether stop by again in the future.

Motometer Serves Up Addictive Self Titled Debut

Did you ever find yourself surfing YouTube and watching the “Will it Blend?” segments for hours on end? Imagine taking two very talented “guns for hire” musicians who met at NAAM and putting them in a blender with influences such as Queens Of The Stone Age, King Crimson, Cream, The Black Keys, Deep Purple, Audioslave, Animals As Leaders and Frank Zappa. What comes out is Motormeter and the taste is addictive.

Motometer is the duo of Stephen Dusenberry (drums, samples, synthesizers) and Adam Fagelson (frankenbass). The group has played with some well-known artist including Peter Cetera, George Clinton, James Brown, Steve Miller, George Benson, Maynard Ferguson, Foghat and Molly Hatchett. And this Sunday July 7 you can catch them doing their own thing at Altar Bar at PM with Protomen, Tracksploitation, and Dethlehem.

As Pittsburgh Music Magazine played their self-titled debut “Motometer” at maximum volume it was found that the blend of genres kept a groove that could be explained as the feel of watching an evil science project unwinding into something out of control and dangerous yet you can’t stop staring at it’s beauty. The instrumental tracks that are punctuated by ‘movie-like’ snippets for vocals throughout felt like being in a sports car driving top speed at 2AM with no headlights on a mountain with no guardrails. In short: We dug it. There are so many layers to their music and so many little nuances to pick up on. The rhythmically based tunage has funk, jazz, metal, and rock all over it. Songs such as opener ‘Mexi Pepsi’ and follow up ‘Cuda’ have a gorgeous atmosphere that is reminiscent of Rush, Joe Satriani, and late night horror flicks from Japan. As the effort progresses there are hints in ‘Flint’, ‘Hwood’, and ‘The Eight’ of ZZ Top, Chick Corea, White Zombie-ish/Queens of the Stone Age style vocal clips, all topped off with a feeling of having becoming more broadened yet secretly dirtier for listening. The whole piece goes together like a finely orchestrated meal- many courses all tempting your listening buds in different ways.
What you really get is something quite familiar yet entirely unique at the same time. When musicians create for themselves rather than for the masses you get an artistic purity that can’t help but rub off on those who love music and not just what is marketed to them. In these dog days of summer Pittsburgh Music Mag will be grabbing the ice and liquor and hitting the “Motometer” button on the music blender full blast.
