PHILIP H. ANSELMO hasn’t just paved his own path; he’s bulldozed it with his bare hands. His primal, powerful presence led Pantera to Grammy Award nominations, sales of twenty million albums worldwide, legions of diehard fans, and an indisputable heavy metal legacy. Simultaneously, Down carved out a distinct niche with a gold-selling debut and three more critically acclaimed releases. Superjoint made a triumphant return in 2016 and in the midst of everything, ANSELMO joined Scour alongside members of Pig Destroyer and Cattle Decapitation and teamed up with horror icon Bill Moseley for the Bill & Phil project. However, PHILIP H. ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS speaks to a certain need for him.
Instead of treading the same ground, ANSELMO and his bandmates in THE ILLEGALS, open up another doorway altogether with their 2018 sophomore release, Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue. It’s extreme, abrasive, aggressive, and anthemic. In other words, it’s purely ANSELMO.
Following up 2013’s Walk Through Exits Only, this new body of work hinges on no holds-barred lyrical misanthropy and insurgent instrumental intricacy as it sharpens any and all edges to guillotine precision. “It ain’t pretty,” ANSELMO exclaims. “It’s more straightforward and cohesive to a degree, but it still goes off the rails here and there. We went through it song after song cut and fucking dry. I was in a specific mindset. I wanted to further my endeavors into a genre of music that I adore. As all ten songs blow by, I wanted an unforgiving feel. This is what was on my mind. It’s a recorded capsule of time.”
Following a successful maiden touring cycle for THE ILLEGALS, the frontman hunkered down at his home studio in Louisiana to record what would become Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue in 2014 and 2015. The lineup shifted as Stephen Taylor (Superjoint) transitioned from bass to guitar, Mike DeLeon (Flesh Horder, Being Killed, ex-MOD et al) joined as a guitarist, and Walter Howard (Grieved, Oppressive Force) took over bass duties. Meanwhile, Jose Manuel “Blue” Gonzalez (Superjoint, Warbeast) held down the drums. Through rigorous rehearsals and writing sessions, a framework for the new music took shape as ANSELMO wholeheartedly welcomed the ideas of his cohorts.
“Their creative input is fucking fantastic,” beams ANSELMO. “This is something that was very different from the first record where I was very staunch. I wanted it to be ugly. I was very firm that I was writing every fucking note. The thought was, ‘This is my contribution to ugly music right this second in a heavy metal vein.’ That was great at the time. Walk Through Exits Only made its own little statement that I am a free agent and I belong to no single band. This time, I worked closely with everyone. We tried different ideas together. It made the spirit of this thing come alive even more because of the enthusiasm these guys bring. It enhanced the integrity of the project.”
“Choosing Mental Illness As A Virtue hits with all the subtlety of a jackhammer in the forehead. This is unquestionably one of the angriest and heaviest albums of ANSELMO‘s career.” — Exclaim
“An ever-shifting fusillade of extreme groove prog…” — Decibel

“…strong, powerful and ugly…this record has everything one would want from a PHILIP H. ANSELMO project – testosterone-filled, aggressive, no-nonsense metal with attitude… some of the heaviest, most brutal metal he has created to date…” — Metal Nexus

“…an album that is pure mayhem on the surface and sublimely intelligent underneath.” — The Void Report

“…heavy, vicious and angry…a perfect storm of extreme metal chaos…” — Hellbound

“The sheer anger PHIL communicates in his most crushing vocal lines and the mind melting assault of these tracks speaks of a world few of us are truly comfortable with. ANSELMO and the gang are pulling apart societies problems and forcing us to choke on them.” — Two Guys Metal Reviews

“…a brutal album, heavy in attack but chaotic in style and grandeur.” — The Rock Pit

“Every song is full of relentless anxiety, tension, and malice. Seeking solace is not in the cards as the death-tinged hardcore brutality within this album is terrifying. However, there is a bit of a cathartic release that only the tortured vocals of PHIL ANSELMO can provide.” — Metal Wani

GRETA VAN FLEET ANNOUNCES INITIAL NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES FOR 2018
With Five Dates Already Sold Out, U.S. Trek Starts April 13 at CoachellaBand Has Started Recording its Debut Full-Length Album

Greta Van Fleet – “10 New Artists You Need to Know” – Rolling Stone

LOS ANGELES, CA – January 24, 2018 — Greta Van Fleet, who took the 2017 music scene by storm with its dynamic rock ‘n’ roll debut single “Highway Tune” claiming the #1 spot at Rock Radio for five consecutive weeks, amassing 10-million-plus Spotify plays and 6.8-million YouTube views in 2017 alone, selling out every single one of its headline dates in advance, and being named Loudwire’s “Best New Artist,” will kick off its 2018 tour schedule at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday, April 13.  The band’s itinerary will include a slew of other major outdoor music festivals as well as headline dates that will see them playing to larger-capacity venues and multiple nights in some cities.  Five of the dates – Houton, Dallas, Nashville and two nights in Detroit – went on sale last week and all sold out in under 15-minutes.  Tickets for Greta Van Fleet’s headline dates for this leg go on sale to the public this Friday, January 26; log on to www.gretavanfleet.com for all ticket purchasing info.

“We love making music and we love playing shows, but we never expected anything like the attention we’ve been getting,” said bassist Sam Kizska.  “We are truly humbled by the response we’ve gotten, and are very excited to get back on the road and play for our fans.”

Prior to the tour, the Frankenmuth, MI-based Greta Van Fleet – 21-year old vocalist Josh Kiszka, brothers Jake (guitar, also 21) and Sam (bass, keys, 18), and longtime family friend Danny Wagner (drums, also 18) – are spending January and February recording its debut full-length album anticipated to be released late Spring/early Summer (Lava/Republic Records).  The album will be recorded in Nashville and Detroit and produced by Al Sutton and Marlon Young, the duo that helmed the band’s critically-acclaimed, chart-topping/breakout EPs, Black Smoke Rising (4/21/17) and the follow up From The Fires double EP (11/10/17).  For the album, the band has an archive of songs written over the past few years as well as brand new material penned late last year when they spent a week in the Tennessee woods.  So, fans can look forward to the next evolution of, as Revolver magazine put it, Greta Van Fleet‘s “high-octane, soul-and R&B-influenced riff rock.”

“Each of us has his own set of influences so that brings a great diversity to the music we make,” said Jake.  “Every one of our songs has its own unique complexities and we’d like for the full album to showcase that diversity, let people see what we can really do.”

The Accidentals @MrSmalls Theatre Pittsburgh

As part of their 2018 tour, The Accidentals will be performing with Keller Williams at Mr. Smalls Theatre in Millvale on January 13th in celebration of their new record ‘Odyssey’.

NPR says the group carries “poetic ambiguity” and “idealistic undertones” through evocative lyrics, but to really get a feel of their energy check out their Yellow Couch Session here.

biography

With ODYSSEY, their extraordinary Sony Masterworks debut album, The Accidentals affirm their place among contemporary music’s most original and adventurous new bands. Multi-instrumentalists Sav Buist and Katie Larson – joined on stage and in the studio by drummer Michael Dause – have crafted a genre all their own, fueled by their uniquely limitless approach to musicality and songcraft. As its title suggests, ODYSSEY is built upon the foundation of real life experience through adversity and finding strength in vulnerability, their five-year journey having brought them to this cusp moment. Lyrically powerful songs like “Earthbound” and the potent title track see the band embracing their choice to lead an unconventional life with all its many surprising twists and turns.

Named among Yahoo Music’s “Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017,” The Accidentals’ adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, their shared influences bounced between classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock, and the obscure.

Dubbing themselves after the musical notes that fall outside of a key signature, The Accidentals recorded and released a pair of independent albums in 2012 and 2013, the latter funded by a hugely successful Kickstarter. Their original songs revealed a band with wide-ranging influences but always true to their orchestral roots. National applause and attention followed, as did acclaimed collaborations with some fellow local artists and independent filmmakers. Other career highlights included scoring arrangements for a 75-piece orchestra to accompany them on their original songs as well as arranging pieces for an opera/dance production with Jennifer and Ryan Lott (Son Lux).

The past five years have seen The Accidentals perform over a thousand live shows, including headline dates, festival sets, and shared stages along such like-minded acts as Martin Sexton, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Bird, The Wailers, Joan Baez and others. 2015 saw the band embark on their first full-scale national tour, funded in part by an Indiegogo ‘online garage sale”. That year’s SXSW debut saw them hailed by Billboard for “displaying a genre-hopping range of influences and some smart songwriting skills to go with their abundant musical chops.”

Now, at long last, The Accidentals unveil their most compelling and finely honed work to date. Co-produced by Buist, Larson, and Dause with engineer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney, Guster, George Jones, Alison Krauss) at Asheville, NC’s Echo Mountain Recording, ODYSSEY sees the band joined by such friends and fans as acoustic guitar maestra Kaki King, bassist – and fellow Michigander – Dominic John Davis (Jack White, Beck), Carbon Leaf guitarist Carter Gravatt, Keller Williams and The Decemberists’ Jenny Conlee, who spent three days in the studio alongside the band, lending her distinctive organ to a number of the album’s key tracks.

“It was a really collaborative process,” says Larson. “A lot of these songs had been hashed out at our live shows over the past few years, so we had a very strong idea of what we wanted in the arrangements. Jason helped us get outside the box with recording techniques, putting a fresh spin on the songs.”

“I’m so glad we’ve been able to collaborate with musicians who are so receptive to working and playing together,” Buist says. “They added their own artistry to some of the older songs, and it gave them new life.”

The Accidentals’ inviting spirit of shared creativity is perhaps best represented by the album’s audacious first single, “KW,” showcasing the inimitable guitar work of Keller Williams, whose own virtuosic genre-agnostic approach towards music making inspired the song in the first place.

“We were really lucky to tour with Keller,” Buist says. “We got to know him pretty well. He’s an amazing, genuine human and musician. He’s constantly defying genres, crossing lines, and creating collaborative projects. I wanted to capture some of that spirit in a song, so I wrote ‘KW.’ Keller caught wind of it at a show and played the song live with us. Later we added strings to his album and he offered to lay down guitar tracks. The dream came true – we ended up with a song that has a lot of his style and energy. We love that guy.”

From the orchestrated rock of “Memorial Day” to the album-closing “Ballad Tendered Gun” – surprisingly, The Accidentals’ first instrumental to be included on an LP – ODYSSEY is a strikingly dynamic work, both layered and unhurried, bittersweet yet lifeaffirming. Rich with literary references, whispers of nostalgia, and an unstoppable sense of forward motion, its songs were written independently by Buist and Larson and then arranged and refined by the group, creating a perfect yin/yang between individual introspection and dynamic cooperation, each artist bringing her own unique perspective to the process.

“We rely on each other to create a balance,” Buist says. “I think that’s the key to this band. Our styles of songwriting and arrangement are very different, so when they come together, they create this variation that couldn’t happen any other way.”

Multi-talented guitarist/keyboardist Jake Allen will join The Accidentals on stage as a special guest, filling in some of the colors and textures of ODYSSEY in live performances. The goal as ever is to experiment and experience, exploring new ideas and approaches while always staying true to their roots. With ODYSSEY, The Accidentals have conjured a truly one of its kind sound and vision, booming with free-thinking musicality, wisdom, and an understanding that growth is a process, not something that happens overnight. The Accidentals are already moving forward on their amazing journey, rolling down the windows on an open road towards someplace that’s both true and transcendent.

“I don’t think there are really any limits in terms of genre or instrumentation,” Larson says. “We just really enjoy making music that connects.”

“For us, it’s about the experience and collaboration and trying to learn as much as we can,” Buist says. “We want to be able to walk into any room with confidence in our craft, but in the end, we’re total nerds that just enjoy learning new things. Every day is an opportunity.”

Anarbor Tour (@Smiling Moose Pittsburgh) 2017: Review and Photos!

words and pix: Abigail McNatt
The local music scene is highly underrated. There are so many different kinds of bands that fall in this scene and are so talented. If I could tell anyone in this city who loves music anything, it would be to attend small shows and listen to bands and artists that don’t have a lot of likes or followers or listens.
One of those bands whose shows I attend quite often (and shoot all the time) is Vertigo. They are a local pop/rock band who play a ton of local shows. They were first on stage at the Smiling Moose on this cold Saturday evening in Pittsburgh. They are a fun band to shoot because you can tell they love what they’re doing and they get the crowd involved as well. I saw a good amount of people in front of the stage bobbing their heads to the groovy music. Overall, their set was very fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend readers to check them out in the link above.
Next on stage was Baltimore pop/rock band, Skyward Story. The previously named band, 3PM, put on a super fun set. Girls went wild for them. Some came from far and wide just to see them play. They interacted well with their crowd and performed many originals but also did Ed Sheeran‘s “Castle on the Hill”. Overall their set was very fun and I enjoyed every second of it. If boy bands are your thing, go check them out!
Going along with the local band theme, next up was pop/punk band from Pittsburgh, Milly. They were pretty cool. Being in the smaller music scene, I was surprised I hadn’t heard of them before. I thought they were pretty good! The crowd was enjoyed it as well it seemed. So if you’re into the local music scene, go check them out in the link above!
The next band, who was also the band touring with Anarbor, was Sundressed. They describe themselves as “emotive punk”. They surprised me because I expected more a more pop/rock sound considering the bands that played prior to them. But they were pretty good. They seemed really into their performance and got the crowd pumped up. So if you’re into the more “emotive punk” type music, go look them up!
Last but not least, the band we were all waiting for… Anarbor. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re considered alternative rock and they’re amazing. They get super into it and the fans were all over the place. They were dancing, singing along, and just enjoying every second they were there. The band had great interaction and put on a wonderful, upbeat performance. So if you haven’t heard of them, go look them up. I provided links to each band above!
Overall, it was a great night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Some of the photos are showcased below and the rest are featured here.

About Carissa Johnson:
Carissa Johnson is addicted to playing rock and roll. The kind of sweaty, turbulent, in-your-face, post punk rock that makes uptight peopfyuuuvle squeamish and uncomfortable. Hailing from Boston MA, rock artist Carissa Johnson has proven to leave her mark and she is just getting started. With a debut full-length album winning “Album of the Year” by the Limelight Music Awards and a nomination for “Best Punk Act” by the Worcester Music Awards in 2016, Johnson continues to push ahead, writing and producing enthusiastically honest songs. With influences evident in her songs, her sound pays tribute to seventies punk and new wave, yet remains authentically her own. Johnson is known for her straight-forward lyrics and her driving, four on the floor melodies, her “heartening anthemic rock” stands out among her contemporaries. In April of 2017 she won Boston’s legendary 38th annual Rock and Roll Rumble. Nahko and Medicine for the People frontman, Nahko: MY NAME IS BEAR TOUR

BY JAMIE LOVE

Nahko and Medicine for the People frontman, Nahko, released his first solo and very personal album, on October 20th, titled,  My Name Is Bear. To support it, he announced an expansive United States and European tour. On October 24th, Nahko, backed by his Medicine Tribe and childhood teddy named Britches, graced the stage of Mr. Smalls Theater in Pittsburgh and sent the audience on a journey through the earlier years of his songwriting and self-discovery. “So many dear people helped me to write and live these stories…The two summers I spent in Alaska, half the winter in Louisiana and the other half holed in my van in Portland, and then the first year in Hawaii was transformational and pivotal to shaping me into who I am today. Those 3 years before I met my mother would offer a reclaiming of my name, finding a new faith and fever for my own spiritual connection to Creator, and discovering first love. These were just a few of the important discoveries for a young cub set on exploring the world and finding himself amongst the wild.”

Opening acts included songstress Christina Holmes and Spanish Soul Indie Rock group 1,000 Fuegos. My Name Is Bear is Nahko’s second major release only one year prior, in 2016, Nahko and Medicine for the People dropped their third studio album, HOKA via SideOneDummy Records. HOKA, hit number 72 on the Billboard 200 upon it’s released and was awarded “Record of the Year” by the Native American Music Association.

Broken Social Scene playing Pittsburgh Byham Theater with Frightened Rabbit on October 1

Following a wave of praise for the release of Broken Social Scene‘s newest album Hug of Thunder, the band will set off on a Fall tour of North America later next month.

Broken Social Scene‘s long-awaited return has proven worth the wait for critics and fans alike. Pitchfork gave the album its coveted Best New Music honor, writing, “On their first album in seven yearsBroken Social Scene distill their sound to a vital essence. The band is focused and renewed, invigorated by the missionary spirit of their best work.” The New York Times wrote, “Broken Social Scene‘s music rejoices in what clever teamwork can construct.” NPR also agreed, saying “Hug of Thunder does not skimp.”
Produced by Joe Chiccarelli with Nyles Spencer and mixed by Shawn EverettHug Of Thunder is everything BSS fans love from the Canadian collective and then some, an album overflowing with glorious open chords, multi-voice harmonies, spacious psychedelia-tinted breakdowns, and more.  It is a panoramic, expansive album that manages to be both epic and intimate; and like all things BSS, in troubled times, it offers a serotonin rush of positivity.  Since their inception in the early Aughts, BSS has always pushed sonic boundaries while remaining reverent of a perfect chorus; almost twenty years down the line, Hug Of Thunder sharpens that balance.  The record’s twelve songs refract the band’s varying emotions, methods, and techniques in ways that not only reference their other albums but surpass them.  Hug Of Thunder is righteous but warm, angry but loving, melodic but uncompromising.  And if you’ve ever fallen in love with Broken Social Scene – as many of us have – it is a perfect return that was truly worth the wait.

PAST FARM AID CONCERTS

Relive some of the amazing, one-of-a-kind moments that have taken place at Farm Aid concerts since 1985.

Review: Taking Back Sunday, Every Time I Die and All Get Out @ Stage AE

Taking Back Sunday stopped by Pittsburgh’s own Stage AE the other night to have one major party on a Wednesday night.  Fellow supporting acts Every Time I Die and All Get Out had the same mindset it seemed when it came to having some fun and truly rocking out.  For a Taking Back Sunday fan though, this was definitely a show to see since their setlist was a solid mixture of older and newer songs so cover the whole bands rather large discography.  Of course that includes some of Adam’s mic swinging antics and humorous stories throughout the night.

One of the two biggest mentions of the night was how there wasn’t one moment I could honestly recollect that there wasn’t a handful of fans singing along, or how spot on the band was when it came to their set.  Every song was just so punchy and smooth at the same time which in turn tells me that this band has a lot more to offer still when it comes to playing shows and hopefully continuing to write new material in the years to come.

It was quite noticeable when Taking Back Sunday would play some older songs from one particular album (Louder Now) because the tempo of the whole performance just altered to a faster more energetic setting for everyone.  Just goes to show that there’s always at least one album that will never die off and will always be the “go to” album for setlist songs.  Even a Green Day song was played throughout the set to change things up a bit and to also keep things fresh.

Nineteen songs later, a couple of stories, and one killer performance later I can definitely say I left satisfied and had a fulfilled night that had me blaring my stereo on the way home.  It just seems that Taking Back Sunday never really lets you down after all these years as an alternative band that just keeps on keeping on.  Not a whole lot of better ways to put it.

GWAR Announces North American Fall Tour// Pittsburgh 10/23 @MrSmalls

New Album “The Blood of Gods” Out October 20th via Metal Blade Records
On October 20thGWAR will release a new studio album entitled “The Blood of Gods” via Metal Blade Records.  In support of the new album, your Lords and Masters will leave their arctic slumber and return to the road to cause aural (and anal) devastation across North America.  Joining in the chaos will be Ghoul, Doyle (10/20-11/5), He Is Legend (11/7-12/10) and U.S. Bastards.  The tour kicks off in Richmond, VA on October 20th and runs through December 10th in Detroit, MI.  The tour includes a stop in New York City on Halloween as well!  A complete list of dates can be found below.

The Berserker Blothar had this to say about the upcoming tour:
“Humans, we are coming to tear your world apart with a live performance the likes of which has never been seen on this or any other planet! This album, “The Blood of Gods,” is the greatest thing since French toast.  Just hearing these songs performed will result in an instant paroxysm of weeping, gnashing of teeth, and the uncontrollable voiding of your filthy bowels. Now, we are taking the whole bloody shit show on the road, with the most spectacular, blood-drenched, gruesome, and terrifying rock concert of all time. Don’t miss your chance to sacrifice yourself to GWAR at a venue near you!”

Bohabs! Be the coolest corpse in the pile! Don’t miss your chance to pledge your allegiance to GWAR each night when they rape and pillage your town. Head to https://www.gwarvip.com to take part in “The Lords and Masters VIP Experience”.

General admission tickets and VIP Packages go on sale to the public this Friday August 18th at 10:00 AM Eastern.

The Lords and Masters VIP Experience Includes:
*One (1) General Admission Ticket with Venue Early Entry (potentially guest list)
*Exclusive access to GWAR soundcheck where you will pledge allegiance to your Lords & Masters!
*Invitation to play a GWAR instrument onstage at soundcheck

*Crowd Free Merch Access
*One (1) Souvenir item signed by members of GWAR
*One (1)  Souvenir GWAR laminate
*Photo opportunity with GWAR before the show
*You will be killed by GWAR on stage during the show.
*Designated Slave Pit Area to pledge your allegiance before you are killed on stage by GWAR!

There are only 5 VIP TICKETS available per show, that’s it so don’t wait.

Concerning the album;  “The Blood of Gods” is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers, and the massive battle between GWAR and the forces of all that is uptight and wrong with the world. Along the way, the band challenges the sins of their great mistake, from politics, pollution, and organized religion, to fast food, and factory farming. Humans are shown as what they are; a parasitic disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry. Meanwhile, Sleazy P. Martini, the crooked entrepreneur who discovered the Scumdogs, and has always envisioned them as a sort of horrific boy band, finally managed to convince the group to write a hit song called “I’ll Be Your Monster.” If all goes according to plan, it may be just stupid enough to work!

GWAR LIVES MOTHERFUCKERS!

Boston at Pittsburgh’s Key Bank Pavilion

Review and pix: Ed Thompson

The anticipation for Boston at Pittsburgh’s Key Bank Pavilion was so/so leading up the show Friday for a few reasons. One, they were calling for 3 inches of rain between 9 pm and 12 am along with dangerous lightning, which coincidently was the same time Boston would be hitting the stage and playing. The other reason was going to see yet another legendary 70’s-80’s rock band minus their original lead singer and a few other members. Much like Journey and Foreigner though, Boston was making it apparently with Tommy DeCarlo. So, I just had to go and see what it was about. I can’t deny that when I saw the summer schedule had Boston on, I did get excited to see one of my favorite bands growing up.

Joan Jett was the supporting act, and unfortunately, she did not allow any photographers for the show. I will say this, however, her set list, for the most part, hasn’t changed over the years, yet she continues to have a great and strong rock voice hitting all the notes she needs to, to complete her set. With that being said, the roadies QUICKLY got the stage ready and Boston hit the stage promptly at the time the said earlier in the day. I think the weather or the threat of severe weather really kept the crews tight with the time Boston was set to hit the stage.

Boston opened with Rock and Roll Band as expected with a brief guitar opening by original member Tom Scholz.  The transition into RNR Band was nice. Nothing spectacular, but it got the crowd jumping and in the mood for the show that would test the crowd at times due to the ever-changing weather conditions.

The setlist rolled right into the meat of the show with Feelin’ Satisfied, Smokin’ and Heaven on Earth. I think the crowd really got up on their feet and stayed there with Peace of Mind and It’s Been Such a Long Time.  The band lead by Tommy DeCarlo kept the crowd guessing and wanting more and more Boston. The main chunk of their sets were many favorites such as Cool The Engines, Hollyann, I think I Like it and Something About You. At the mid-way point, the weather changed and really hit the Key Bank Pavilion pretty hard. When you can feel the rain at the sound boards, you know you are having some serious weather.  I’m not sure if the band upped the tempo at all or cut out some talking to the fans, but I think with the imminent weather, they would have been smart to do so. I’ve been to a few shows at the pavilion before when the delayed or stopped the show due to weather. Luckily tonight for Boston, they did not.

Tommy DeCarlo is a dead ringer in my opinion for a seasoned Brad Delp. Close your eyes and as a general Boston fan, you can’t really tell the difference. Probably for the hard core fans, that’s untrue.

Amanda was INCREDIBLE. Insert the “dead ringer” comment here again regarding DeCarlo and Delp. Put that same insert for More Than a Feeling. Loved both these songs and the way the band performed them. Truly the highlight of the night for me and many of the fans tonight.  DeCarlo had a great night vocally. He kept the crowd in the palm of his hand pretty much all night long.  He played the crowd well and the crowd I think played him well too.

Winding down towards the home stretch brought The Journey and To Be a Man and Foreplay/Long Time. Most definitely with the weather coming into their concerns, the encore was a one song encore and was just incredible. Party closed out the night and left the Boston fans of Pittsburgh already looking at their phones seeing if Boston will roll through in the fall or winter. Unfortunately, for them, there are no more Pgh dates even close.  The fans from the Steel City will probably have to wait till next summer to get another dose of their BOSTON.

All in all, a great show.  DeCarlo was strong from start to finish.  No real surprises.  Your basic, strong performance by the sole survivor of the original band from Boston and some very talented musicians.

The same day the same-titled lead single as well as the pre-orders were announced. The band covered Jealous originally performed by Nick Jonas.[10][11]

On December 23, 2014 the band announced they would be being part on the Hawthorne Heights tour between March and April 2015.[12]After that tour the band will share stage with Silent Planet in April and May 2015 to promote their new album.[13]

Departure from InVogue[edit]

Members Alex Polk and Andrew Sharp departed from the band and in spring of 2016 Shawn Yates, former member of At The Skylines, served as the new guitarist. On December 15, 2016 the band announced their departure from InVogue Records and the signing to a new label, Spinefarm Records. Shortly after they announced a U.S. tour with headliner Silent Planet, along with Ghost Key and Hail the Sun beginning February of 2017. A year after the release of Origin, Dayseeker announced a new full length album set to release in 2017.[

Train Tough it out Despite Rainy Night

On a rainy Friday night, the citizens of Pittsburgh (and a lot from Erie actually) toughed it out to see Train play what was close enough to be a hometown show for lead singer Pat Monahan who lived in Erie, PA as a kid.  With that being said, anticipation was high for them as they were about to take the stage, as for me on the other hand… I personally was unsure of what to expect.

As much as I never like to use the first person until the end of a review, I have to be honest and say I never listen to the radio, only my own music.  When listening to Train play the other night I’ve come to realize that anytime the radio did happen to be on my stereo, or any other time I walked into a grocery store, Train plays quite literally every other song… this is no joke.  My personal thoughts kept repeating and it sounded like a broken record, “I didn’t know they played this song.” “They play this song too?” “Really?  They play that song as well?” “So they play every song on the radio ever?”  At this point, I was unsure whether to be impressed because they had so many popular songs or to be kind of disappointed in a band that only plays catchy hit singles of their own.  One thing for certain, the crowd loved and sang along all night long with Pat and it seems as if they made a great career choice for themselves in the long run.

Upon watching Train’s performance, aside from the catchy songs that were being performed, and the guest appearances from the opening acts to help with a couple of songs (check setlist below), the performance by the band was somewhat boring.  This is not me being biased, just stating a fact that no one really moved around at all on stage except Pat, and even then all he did was walk side to side the whole time; there just wasn’t a whole lot of energy it seemed.  During the third song, he was taking people’s phones and taking selfies with them which was very cool of him, and later on the double guitar solo from Luis Maldonado was pretty great, but aside from those two things, the show relied on the display screen in the backdrop to entertain the crowd with images, colors, and lights.  That was a lie, there was one more interesting thing, Train played a song titled “Marry Me” so their bus driver could propose to his girlfriend mid-song on stage.  FYI she did say yes.

As we were getting towards the end of the show, and they came back out for their encore songs, they dedicated a song to the recently lost Chris Cornell and played a “Black Hole Sun” exactly as it is performed by Soundgarden.  Personally, it sounded great, the interest of everyone else though seemed as if they didn’t even know the song or even care about it because it was the complete opposite of every other song played that night.  It was kind of upsetting to not see any support for that song but more importantly, Chris Cornell.  Probably because everyone at the show had no clue what that song was.

To wrap this up the show was overall consistently good throughout the night, but was lacking in the true concert experience I felt as if nothing really stood out to me.  The same experience could have been felt by watching a youtube performance or just turning on the radio.  I give Train a lot of credit for creating so many catchy and popular songs over the past few years, I just wish the show would have been less of a “greatest hits” show and more of an actual performance.

Lo-fi Pop duo Zigtebra roars into Pittsburgh July 4th

Zigtebra play Howler’s on July 4th with Reign Check, Dumplings, and Sorry I’m Dead

Zigtebra is Zebra (Emily Rose) and Tiger (Joseph).  They are half-siblings who met in Chicago at the end of 2010 while performing in the Pure Magical Love dance troupe.  Immediately drawn to one another, they found themselves on an investigative journey of lineage culminating in the discovery of shared blood.  “Zigtebra” was born as a lifetime adventure to collaborate.  Armed with a cassette of collected songs (“The Pink Line”), they set off across America on a summer road trip/tour.  When they returned to Chicago they locked themselves up at Observatory Studios and recorded new material for their first studio album “The Brave.”

Big Plans for 2017: Releasing a new song and music video EVERY. SINGLE. MONTH.

Bonus Points: Sign up for the “Secret Club” email list for a free download + secret messages every full moon!

“Zigtebra’s The Brave is the bold marriage of linear, catchy, pure pop minimalism and new-fangled oddity/intrigue. Clean without being slick, bubbly without being trite, and full of thoughtful musings, all laid out within the bands own gaga, dragon-fruitish and ticklish aesthetic. Oh, and it’s full of love — If you don’t know what love is, you might get a clue from this album.”

Check out the Live video from their show opening for OH WONDER. It was a new song, and since then they’ve released a more dancey music video of the new version.

KING 810 at Rex Theater on 6/10, Band Drops Controversial Video for “La Petite Mort”

KING 810 will embark on a series of limited engagement live events next month for their latest album, LA PETITE MORT OR A CONVERSATION WITH GOD, which will include a unique performance each night that will captivate its audiences in their intensely personal and often contentious world.

The band recently launched Part 1 of ‘THIS IS KING,’ an episodic documentary piece which gives fans an unfiltered look into their lives and performances. For future episodes of ‘THIS IS KING,’ fans can subscribe to the band’s YouTube.

Also, PHub, the premier online destination for adult entertainment, debuted the NSFW music video for “La Petite Mort.” The clip is the first to incorporate on-screen sex in an 8-minute long music video. The video, which was shot in Los Angeles and directed by the band’s own David Gunn, is a provocative piece of erotica featuring adult film stars Jenna Foxx, Jasmine Summers, Amber Ivy, Lily Jordan, Alex Legend and Jake Jace. “La Petite Mort,” which refers to “The Little Death” (the sensation of orgasm as likened to death), is matched with explicit visuals in the official video conjuring the darkness and desperation of sexuality.

“A lot of the ideas for our videos came together in the song writing process. This one was no exception,” said Gunn. “The record touches on sex in a lot of ways. It used to be that sex and rock and roll went hand in hand, but that archetype has been reconstructed over the years to make way for a safe/tame/boring/politically correct culture, which we have never belonged to. It’s sad that something so inherent and necessary has become taboo, but we have done what we always do and that is to follow the art wherever it must go regardless of how uncharted the territory may be.”

The always provocative band will appear at Rex Theater in Pittsburgh, PA on 6/10.

Detroit-based saajtak @Brillobox 6/11

Drawing from eclectic backgrounds, Detroit based avant-rock quartet saajtak channels the textural experimentalism of electronic music, the timbral and rhythmic intricacies of Indian classical music, the intimate communication of Deep-Listening rooted free improvisation, and the urgency of polymetric groove. Through ritualistic collaborative sessions, the ensemble creates unique audiovisual environments and genre defying compositions.

“With their combined forces, saajtak are nothing if not unpredictable, bobbing between feverish noise and lush, operatic soundscapes with the agility of a hummingbird… it is rare to see musicians thrive in this space as saajtak [does].” – Detroit Music Magazine

Saajtak brings meaning to each moment as they perform – eervescent, ethereal, and completely drool-worthy. One of our favorite bands in SE Michigan.” – Detroit Bureau of Sound

“Witnessing this group fuse their powers together and lock into their form of magic is nothing short of astounding. I just can’t even imagine how their songs and performances come together … Too amazing for words.” – Paul Simpson, Music Director at WCBN-FM

Propelled by a shared ainity for free improvisation, vocalist Alex Koi, electronic artist Simon Alexander-Adams, percussionist Jon Taylor and bassist Ben Willis developed a musical rapport in Creative Arts Orchestra, a large all-improvising ensemble at The University of Michigan. Since 2014, saajtak has cultivated a dynamic artistic practice, incorporating Taylor and Koi’s study of jazz, Willis’ experience in the western art music tradition, and Alexander-Adams’ work in multimedia and performance art technology. 2017 will be a busy year for the ensemble, with the spring release of their debut EP Spokes, an east coast tour, and many performances.

SEETHER LURKS INTO STAGE AE

by Shelby Sweitzer

When you think about a crowd at a rock concert, there are a lot of different scenarios that can come to mind. You may think about teenagers, in dark clothing and piercings, or you may think of the older classic crowd, who are wiser and well taught in the art of rock and roll. Either way, there are several different types of fans in the rock and roll genre, and you would’ve found all types of fans this past Friday at the Seether concert in Pittsburgh.

Before Seether, however, there were two powerful opening acts to get the crowd energized and moving before the main event, both having one specific thing in common, they were both fronted by women. Starting with the first band Kaleido, a rock band from Detroit, fronted by Christina Chriss. This band opened the show with a bang, playing songs off of their first full-length album Experience,  which was released this past Friday. The album is based on the ideas of real people, with real emotions, and their real stories. Following Kaleido, Letters from the Fire hit the stage. The band is a group of five members, based out of California, all except for their front woman Alexa Kabazie, who was born and raised right here in Pittsburgh. This up and coming band kept the crowd going, playing songs off of their current album, Worth the Pain, which was released back in 2016. If you haven’t heard of either of these bands yet, I highly recommend you look into them and become a fan now, because they are definitely heading to the top.

After a half hour break, fans are packing the place full for the main event, and the room goes black. The lights come up, and four mysterious black figures have appeared on the stage. The figures were none other the members of Seether, Shaun Morgan, Dale Stewart, and John Humphrey, and Clint Lowry of Sevendust, who they recruited specifically for the tour. That is what they remained for most of the night, just four black figures with instruments, but that didn’t stop them from bringing life to that stage. Playing not only songs from their new album Poison the Parish which was released earlier this year under Shaun’s new label imprint Canine Riot Records,  but songs off of older albums as well, such as “Nobody’s Praying For Me” off of their 2014 album “Isolate and Medicate“, the band kept the crowd going for the remainder of the night. The band also performed “Broken” off of their “Disclaimer II” which was released in 2004, with Alexa Kabazie, who filled in for Amy Lee‘s portion of the song. The song was played as a tribute to the recently deceased rock icon, Chris Cornell, who passed away earlier this week. It was non-stop music for a good hour and a half, as the instrumental music continued in between each number. Needless to say, it was a good night for rock and roll in Pittsburgh this past Friday, and we hope to see Seether stop by again in the future.

Dazzling MEW Video for “Twist Quest”

On the eve of the band’s forthcoming (seventh) album Visuals on April 28, Danish trio Mew is pleased to share the new track “Twist Quest.” The track is taken from the album and accompanied by a video that sees lead singer Jonas Bjerre assume the role of creative director while also coordinating visuals for the band’s forthcoming live shows.
Following 2015’s + –  the band undertook tour duties around the world and on their return saw them enter the studio with demos that unlike previous works came to fruition comparatively swiftly in terms of writing and recording against a poignant backdrop of world events over the past twelve months.
As Bjerre explains, “This song took shape during a long jam session, like we hadn’t done in a long time. It’s a joyful song, with dark lyrics. I guess the song is about being confused, and unable to keep your mind still from all the stuff that floats around it. The expectations we put on ourselves. But also there’s a sense of celebration in it.”

Mew’s 80’s tinged pop euphoria reigns supreme on Visuals and “Twist Quest” follows that road. Dreamy vocals courtesy of Bjerre and flourishes of saxophone feature and contribute to an album that’s both nostalgic and contemporary, that looks back while marching forward, the sound of a band seizing the moment.
Visuals is released on April 28 though Play It Again Sam and available on CD, vinyl and digitally and is available to pre-order here.

August Burns Red return to Pittsburgh

Once again, Lancaster legends August Burns Red swung by Pittsburgh for the Messengers 10th anniversary tour.  Since their “go to” venue has been shut down (Altar Bar) they ended up at Mr. Smalls for the occasion.  Deciding to tour and celebrate one of their heaviest and fastest albums seemed like it would be a crazy idea for them after coming off of their most intricate album (Found in Far Away Places) to date.  Luckily it brought out the diehard ABR fans to these shows who remember seeing them ten years ago when this album first came out.  That being said, crazy may be an understatement for Wednesday night since there were endless crowd surfers and moshers from start to finish.

At the very start of the show, maybe about halfway through the first song, Jake Luhrs (vocals) stopped singing to help one of the photographers out of the pit actually because it ended up getting way to hectic for anyone to be down there with all the crowd surfers falling over the barricade.  After leaving the stage, the band continued to finish the song before stopping to wait for the return of their frontman.  When coming back on stage, he had a brief statement about having fun but staying safe.  From that point they continued on with playing the Messengers album all the way through before returning to the stage for one of Matt’s famous drum solos followed by some of their hits such as: Empire, White Washed, and Ghosts.

Every single time I end up covering ABR I feel as if I always leave with a drive to listen and play music so much more than I ever would at another concert.  From the professionalism to the offstage generosity these guys have is just mindboggling sometimes.  Plus getting some of the best pictures of my career of them definitely helps.  All in all, their shows are some of the best metalcore performances out there and the fact that they are in the writing process for another album makes my hair stand on edge for how excited I am.
