August Burns Red return to Pittsburgh

Once again, Lancaster legends August Burns Red swung by Pittsburgh for the Messengers 10th anniversary tour.  Since their “go to” venue has been shut down (Altar Bar) they ended up at Mr. Smalls for the occasion.  Deciding to tour and celebrate one of their heaviest and fastest albums seemed like it would be a crazy idea for them after coming off of their most intricate album (Found in Far Away Places) to date.  Luckily it brought out the diehard ABR fans to these shows who remember seeing them ten years ago when this album first came out.  That being said, crazy may be an understatement for Wednesday night since there were endless crowd surfers and moshers from start to finish.

At the very start of the show, maybe about halfway through the first song, Jake Luhrs (vocals) stopped singing to help one of the photographers out of the pit actually because it ended up getting way to hectic for anyone to be down there with all the crowd surfers falling over the barricade.  After leaving the stage, the band continued to finish the song before stopping to wait for the return of their frontman.  When coming back on stage, he had a brief statement about having fun but staying safe.  From that point they continued on with playing the Messengers album all the way through before returning to the stage for one of Matt’s famous drum solos followed by some of their hits such as: Empire, White Washed, and Ghosts.

Every single time I end up covering ABR I feel as if I always leave with a drive to listen and play music so much more than I ever would at another concert.  From the professionalism to the offstage generosity these guys have is just mindboggling sometimes.  Plus getting some of the best pictures of my career of them definitely helps.  All in all, their shows are some of the best metalcore performances out there and the fact that they are in the writing process for another album makes my hair stand on edge for how excited I am.

ALISSA Solo Project Of Alissa White-Gluz Signs To Napalm Records

unnamed-1

The global metal scene recognizes Alissa White-Gluz for her unforgettable and inimitable work as the vocalist of iconic metal band Arch Enemy. At this point in her career, the versatile singer has worked steadily in heavy bands for half her life. The impactful frontwoman has cultivated her style and her sound through years of writing, recording, touring, and old fashioned, iron-clad work ethic. Alissa is armed with equal skill and experience, as well as abundant artistic confidence, and is backed by the fact that music lovers all over the world are eager to hear more of her astonishing range. That’s why White-Gluz is doing something new.

It’s an entity dubbed simply “ALISSA” and her brand new solo project has now been worldwide signed by Napalm Records.
First things first – White-Gluz remains firmly installed in her role as the frontwoman of Arch Enemy. That status has not and will not change. “ALISSA” is more of a musical collective, led by White-Gluz and featuring contributions from her wide network of also-talented friends, like an own creative commune with little in the way of rules, regulations, or limits.
Alissa White-Gluz & Thomas Caser (Napalm Records CEO)
So what is ALISSA all about?Alissa White-Gluzon her signing with Napalm Records:

“I’m excited to announce that I am currently composing and building my first solo album for the project aptly and honestly entitled “ALISSA” which will see some more of my creative adventures unleashed. It is a welcome creative outlet to unlock all of my lyrical and musical vaults with zero restriction or pressure to conform to any particular style or era. I also pay close attention to what my fans want – I haven’t been ignoring the consistent requests for my clean singing voice! With Angela Gossow as management and Napalm Records just as passionate as I am about this new project, I’m fortunate to have found a home amongst friends and colleagues who are supportive and encouraging of my full musical spectrum. This album will also feature members of the Arch Enemy family, both current and past, as well as many of the other great artists I have had the pleasure of sharing a stage with throughout my career. So many respected artists have invited me into their music over the years, now it’s time to bring them into my world.
Thank you to all my incredible fans around the world – this music is for you!”
Thomas Caser, Napalm Records CEO states:
A true pleasure to announce this signing today. We are looking forward to this cooperation with one of the most talented front-ladies and artist in today’s business!”

The ALISSA project is about style and substance, with White-Gluz affirming,“This album will be very personal. I have a lot of ideas, songs, lyrics, and compositions built up in my brain over the years, I want to get them out this way.” White-Gluz is stretching her creative muscles and trying new things in a dynamic way.
Most people know Alissa from being in Arch Enemy, where she focuses mostly on her growling vocals. With creating ALISSA it is the perfect platform for presenting her clean singing voice more often as well as delivering other techniques we all have heard from other works with bands. While the project is taking shape, some of the confirmed guests so far include past and present members of Arch Enemy and Kamelot, as well as Doyle from The Misfits. More creative partnerships will be revealed as this exciting and delightfully nebulous project develops and grows. In the meantime, White-Gluz continues to flesh out the material while recruiting players.

ALISSA is essentially another vehicle for White-Gluz to display her talents and an entity that has no boundaries and therein lies the musical thrill – for Alissa White-Gluz and her listeners. An album is already scheduled for 2017 and tour dates will follow around the album release as well.
Stay tuned for many more exciting details & info to follow!

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS preparing new album for Spring 2013

Sweden’s classic rock heavyweights SPIRITUAL BEGGARS are currently at work on a new studio album and are targeting a Spring 2013 release via InsideOut Music. The album, their eighth studio offering, will be the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2010 release Return To Zero. Additionally, the band is proud to announce that they will be appearing at the 2013 Roadburn Festival Afterburner, on April 21 in Tillburg, Holland.

“Back in the early ’90s, Roadburn founder Walter Hoeijmakers was one of the very first supporters SPIRITUAL BEGGARS had in Europe,” says bandleader Michael Amott. “His unbridled enthusiasm for our music back then when most people didn’t ‘get it’ meant so much to us. It’s a great feeling to now play his fantastic festival and celebrate the staying power of SPIRITUAL BEGGARS and the Roadburn concept together! We’re releasing a new studio album and celebrating our 20th anniversary as a band in 2013, and I really can’t think of a better way to start the party than at the esteemed Roadburn Festival!”

Since their formation in the early ’90s, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS have been at the forefront of the burgeoning stoner rock scene, raising the benchmark for stoner metal bands around the globe through a succession of much acclaimed albums that redefined the genre. Records like Another Way To Shine, Mantra III, Ad Astra, On Fire and Return To Zero deliver a masterful homage to the rock sensibilities of DEEP PURPLE, RAINBOW, URIAH HEEP and TROUBLE, and also the blistering guitar heroics of Frank Marino and MOUNTAIN’s Leslie West.

SPIRITUAL BEGGARS line-up:
Michael Amott (Guitars | ARCH ENEMY, ex CARCASS)
Ludwig Witt (Drums | GRAND MAGUS, ex FIREBIRD)
Per Wiberg (Keys | ex OPETH)
Sharlee D’Angelo (Bass | ARCH ENEMY, WITCHERY)

New Jersey Writer/Author BRIAN ABERBACK Pens New Educational Unauthorized Rockography, “BLACK SABBATH: Pioneers of Heavy Metal”

Esteemed New Jersey writer and author BRIAN ABERBACK has penned a new, educational Black Sabbath book, being released with Enslow Publishers, Inc. The book, titled Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal, is an unauthorized “rockography” that transforms the extensive knowledge about Black Sabbath that Aberback has amassed over the years to the page for future music enthusiasts and students alike to enjoy.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is the only Black Sabbath biography written for middle and high school students. Thoroughly researched, annotated and highly informative, this book is an appealing read for all ages and a great way for parents to introduce their kids to some of the music they love and grew up with. This book chronicles one of rock’s most legendary band’s careers from its formation to the present day and does a superb job of conveying the group’s ups and downs, not glossing over any details while staying age-appropriate. Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is available in high-quality library bound hardcover as well as softcover editions and can be found wherever books are sold online.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal has already been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives and sits on the shelves of libraries throughout the United States to New Zealand, Singapore and the United States Army Base in Heidelberg, Germany.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is part of The Rebels of Rock series from Enslow Publishing Inc. The Rebels of Rock books have a list price of $31.93 and a 25% discount price for Schools and Libraries of $23.95. Other books in The Rebels of Rock series include “rockographies” on Aerosmith, Def Leppard, The Clash, The Ramones, and The Rolling Stones.

BRIAN ABERBACK is a veteran music journalist specializing in hard rock and heavy metal. Aberback’s encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal and hard rock spans numerous genres. His interview list is a who’s who of heavy metal and hard rock legends, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament and Mercyful Fate. His work has appeared in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and on news and music websites. Many of his stories have been published in The Record, the largest daily newspaper in Northern New Jersey.

What sets Aberback apart, in addition to his strong writing style and dedication to his craft, has been his passion for giving heavy metal bands a shot at attracting new audiences through mainstream newspaper exposure. Over the years he’s introduced such bands as Nile, Cradle of Filth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and many, many more, through the pages of The Record and other publications, to music fans, and even metal fans, who likely would have never heard of these bands. Not often do you find daily newspaper writers publishing stories about the likes of D.R.I., Diamond Head, Everytime I Die, Iced Earth or The Gathering.

***An articulate and well-informed speaker with a vast knowledge of the history of rock-and-roll, musically and socially, with a specific emphasis on heavy metal and hard rock, BRIAN ABERBACK is available for book talks, panel discussions and as an expert commentator for television and radio programs.

Check out some great reviews on Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal:

“Refreshingly levelheaded and loaded with sourced quotes, it’s that rare middle-grade biography (or “rockography,” as the title page insists) that is able to trace a band’s history, revel in its rock awesomeness, and be blunt about such things as drug abuse, all the while keeping things at an age-appropriate keel.”
–Booklist

“Through this book, old and new fans alike learn about the band’s history and impact on the music industry.”
–Children’s Literature
