“Angel Olsen has made an unforgettable and entrancing record. Burn Your Fire for No Witness is the musical equivalent of a deep, questioning stare from a lover, and what draws me to her voice is its peaceful, subtle touch. It has me leaning in to listen.” – Bob Boilen,NPR Music

Leading up to the release of Burn Your Fire for No Witness (out Feb. 18 on Jagjaguwar),Angel Olsen shared the fantastic singles, “Forgiven/Forgotten” and “Hi-Five,” and teased intimate solo versions of previously unreleased tracks “Unf**ktheworld,” “Iota,” “Enemy,” and “White Fire,” for her NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert. Starting today, NPR Music andCBC are streaming Burn Your Fire for No Witness in full for a week leading up to the release date. This “collection of songs, grown in a year of heartbreak, travel, and transformation,” present a more self-assured Olsen. Here, she sings with full-throated exultation, admonition, and bold, expressive melody. Also, with the help of producer John Congleton, her music now crackles with a churning, rumbling low end and a brighter energy. Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, SPIN, The FADER, and many more are singing Olsen’s praises. As a musician known for delivering hypnotic performances and leaving audiences speechless, Olsen will take Burn Your Fire for No Witness on the road beginning next week through May. “Why She’ll Be Big: ‘Forgiven/Forgotten,’ the song you can hear now from Olsen’s second album, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, will singe anyone expecting the haunted-coffeehouse strumming she has become cultishly known for. But the rest of Burn blearily combines raw rock and harrowing folk, for a captivating listen that will be crucial to hear live . . . “

— Entertainment Weekly [14 Rising Stars to Watch In 2014]

“While the arrangements are more muscular than before, her high-arching voice remains unobstructed and completely devastating.”

— SPIN [50 Albums You Gotta Hear in 2014]

“On ‘Forgiven/Forgotten’ the explosive lead-off single from her second album, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, the instruments around her finally match the intensity of her voice.”

— Pitchfork [Best New Track]

“Her new album doesn’t come out till February, but it’s an early frontrunner for one of Bob Boilen’s favorites in 2014.”

— NPR Music‘s “All Songs Considered”

“Of all the musicians releasing new albums early this year, Angel Olsen is one who merits particular attention.”

— The Wall Street Journal

“here’s second taste ‘Hi-Five,’ an equally expansive track that chugs and howls, its pounded piano and thwacking kick drums still no match for Olsen’s ferocity as she blows up a partnership that leaves something to be desired.”

Angel Olsen Releases “Hi-Five” Video & Extends U.S. Tour Into April & May

Last week, NPR Music unveiled Angel Olsen‘s very intimate Tiny Desk Concert, which showcased four previously unreleased songs from Angel’s new album, Burn Your Fire for No Witness (out Feb. 18 on Jagjaguwar). Angel recently sat down with Pitchfork to discuss the new album, for which anticipation is building as Rolling Stone named her one of“10 New Artists You Need To Know” in January. Today, Angel shares the stunning new video for Burn Your Fire‘s excellent second single, “Hi-Five.” Directed by frequent Angel collaborator Zia Anger, the “Hi-Five” video simulates a television broadcast from the 60s and 70s, where female pop stars do choreographed performances in grandiose studios with sparkling, modern sets. Anger says, “They were always so wild and psychedelic and humorous from afar. The more you watch them, the more wooden and awkward the performances become. There is a certain loneliness captured. The song ‘Hi-Five’ seems to contain the same sort of duality.” In making the video, Angel and Anger decided to revisit the technique of these 60s and 70s broadcasts and tapped Creatures of the Wind for appropriate styling. Filming took place in an old studio with the junk left in it to create an epic space, achieving a demented, totally sincere and hallucinatory video.

Angel is pleased to announce the extension of her U.S. headline tour in support of Burn Your Fire for No Witness through April and May. A full list of dates is below.

Angel Olsen Announces New Album & 2014 Tour | Listen To First Single Now

Many of the superlatives describing Angel Olsen refer to how seemingly little it takes for her to leave an audience speechless, even spellbound. But Olsen has never been as timid as those descriptors imply, and the noisy, fiery hints in her earlier work find a fuller expression on her forthcoming LP, Burn Your Fire for No Witness, due out February 18th on Jagjaguwar. Here, Olsen sings with full-throated exultation, admonition, and bold, expressive melody. Also, with the help of producer John Congleton, her music now crackles with a churning, rumbling low end and a brighter energy.

This “collection of songs, grown in a year of heartbreak, travel, and transformation,” tell us to leave, or to high-five a lover who is lacking, or to dance our way up and out of sorrow. Many remain essentially unchanged from their bare beginnings. In leaving them so intact, a more self-assured Olsen than the one present on debut EP, Strange Cacti, where she was just beginning to explore the remarkable range of her voice, and full-length, Half Way Home (Bathetic), where she dared to be more personal, is opening up, allowing us to be in the room with her at the very genesis of these songs, when the thread of creation is most vulnerable and least filtered. We are rewarded for entering this room with many head-turning moments and the powerful, unsettling recognition of ourselves in the weave of her songs.

This act of meaning-making recurs as a theme throughout Burn Your Fire for No Witness, as the sublimating response to the power of negativity, and thankfully for us, Olsen has decided to channel a lot of this newfound power into the ethereal, hypnotic performances of her new and revealing songs, sharing with us the full grace and beauty of her transformative moments.

Angel and band will kick off another year of endless touring on the album’s release date. A full list of dates is below and many more are still to come. Burn Your Fire for No Witness is available for pre-order today. An instant download of “Forgiven/Forgotten” comes with each iTunes pre-order.www.scdistribution.com/angelolsen

“Songs on [Half Way Home] had much in common with the passions and range of a singer like Roy Orbison. Angel Olsen Shares Two New Videos

Let’s all begin the new year with some new Angel Olsen, shall we? Today, she shares with the world two new films, premiered this morning via NPR Music. There’s the “Tiniest Seed” video, which is a track off of her stunning sophomore album, Half Way Home, and the video for the previously unreleased song, “Sweet Dreams.” A “transatlantic collaboration between four friends,” filmmakers Randy Sterling Hunter, Ashley Connor, Zia Anger, and Ms. Olsen created these with the idea of the viewer watching them in tandem. “Two songs were written and recorded in Chicago and then sent to Vienna. There they were translated into a film score. The score was mailed back across the Atlantic and then interpreted using a hand-wound 16mm camera . . . The final version is the documentation of an epistolary-exchange lasting nearly a year . . . an attempt to sync the unsyncable and our experiment at reconciling the space between us.” NPR Music tells the full story about these two films.

“Songs on [Half Way Home] had much in common with the passions and range of a singer like Roy Orbison. The common thread between that powerful singer-songwriter and hit-maker from Texas and this more delicate Midwesterner is that they both write from the heart and sing with a range that may make you stop what you’re doing and drop your jaw a bit.” – NPR Music

2012 culminated in exciting ways for Angel. She received accolades across the north east for her striking live show and her album, Half Way Home, made it’s way onto a slew of year-end lists. After being out of stock for quite a while, Bathetic is thrilled to once again be shipping Half Way Home LPs near and far. Following that sold-out tour of select cities in November, Angel will play her first Los Angeles show tomorrow at Bootleg Bar. Her “Sleepwalker”” 7″, featuring “Sweet Dreams” and “California,” is out January 15th on Sixteen Tambourines.

ANGEL OLSEN TOUR DATES:
Fri. Jan. 4 – Los Angeles, CA @ Bootleg Bar
Thu. Feb. 7 – St. Louis @ Off Broadway w/ Water Liars

“Ms. Olsen understands the power of holding back, and feeding out extravagance in small portions. People stopped buying drinks; the bartenders put their elbows on the counter, engrossed. It was remarkable. . . Ms. Olsen has found her sound – her voice, alone and untreated and slow, conjoined with the specific resonance of her guitar – and she’s able to replicate a private discovery in front of a crowd. That’s a lot.”
– The New York Times

“11 tracks of rough-hewn folk, shimmering and ribboned with dirt-packed veins, sung by a voice that curls and dips and dissolves like a black smoke plume.”
– Pitchfork [2012 Albums of the Year: Honorable Mention]

“It’s not just Angel Olsen’s range that makes her voice so unforgettable; it’s the surprise turns she’s learned to produce by manipulating it.” – The FADER

“the work of a young artist with a vision – an engrossing listen.” – Chicago Tribune

“With a voice that can be haunting, uplifting, fearful or strong, it seems there’s little emotion Angel Olsen can’t convey.” – WNYC

ANGEL OLSEN ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR IN SUPPORT OF HALF WAY HOME

LISTEN TO ANGEL OLSEN’S “THE WAITING”

Angel Olsen has a fresh edge to her sound, a warm and wonderful range, and an otherworldly skill and charm. Her special presence became apparent through her debut, Strange Cacti and radiates even more on her sophomore album, Half Way Home. Released last month on Bathetic Records, Half Way Home is a continuation of Angel’s elegance, a collection of both new and old music, honed and matured, thoughts revisited. It presents this beautiful woman and her extraordinary voice taken to a new level, in no doubt a growth and reach brought on by many road trips with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and crew. It’s an emotional stew with Angel’s robust voice up front, bold and engaging, aching to be heard. Joined by Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang) behind the board and playing throughout the songs, Half Way Home showcases the wondrous sounds of a songwriter with such a voice that is rarely found. Listen to Angel Olsen below and see her live as she plays select U.S. cities next month.
