La Femme Announce US Tour With …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

LA FEMME : The French DO Surf.

Despite their geographically challenged location, here is a collective of French surf-pop connoisseurs.

“We became friends with some Californian surfers who were in Biarritz for surfing contests. We wanted to travel and play outside France so our new friends helped us make connections; we earned a little money with summer jobs and flew to California a few months later. It was crazy; we ended up doing 27 gigs in 3 months!”

Since hitting the west coast, the gang’s reputation for finely tuned and taught stark anthems has spread like sea spray. No sooner than releasing their debut album it hit No.1 in the French digital charts.

They have been overwhelmed to find words of praise Jean Michel Jarre and Hedi Slimane – who used La Femme’s version of Oh Baby Doll in his Saint Laurent campaign featuring Cara Delevingne.

Guitarist Sacha Got joined by his compadre Marlon Magnée (keyboard player) started La Femme in Biarritz. Once they moved to Paris they soon met up with Sam Lefevre (bass guitarist), Nunez Ritter (percussions) and Noé Delmas (drummer).

With a nod towards 60s yéyé stars France Gall and Françoise Hardy, vocalists Clémence Quélennec, Clara Luciani, Jane Peynot and Marilou Chollet have also moonlighted  for La Femme. “The perfect female voice probably doesn’t exist so there are several singers on the album and it fits well with the group name,” the boys explain. “It suggests that the woman is a mystery.”

Their new LP Psycho Tropical Berlin is a heady mix of psychedelia, rockabilly, electro, and punk infused surf. It is equal parts Gene Vincent, The Velvet Underground and Kraftwerk. “It’s a melting pot of strange, hypnotic and mental moods (Psycho), sunny, positive vibes and beachy surf (Tropical); and cold, binary electro (Berlin),” explains Marlon.

Written within the depths of a Parisian basement and surrounded by sheep and trees at a house in Biarritz, those contrasts are clear. ‘On the Board’ hurls down gigantic waves of surf guitar with ease and style, and ‘Hypsoline’ is a monster mash up of trembling synths and deadpan vocals. While a more stripped back Stereolab sweetness is offered by ‘It’s Time To Wake Up (2023’) and ‘Nous Étions Deux’.

At times aggressively dark to flippantly light-hearted, La Femme are always hypnotic.

Catch the wave and listen.

Praise For La Femme

“an inventive, highly entertaining album, and one of my favorites of 2013.” –Brooklyn Vegan

“It’s Nuggets-style proto-punk meets early synth-pop, the crude keyboard sounds coming across like a primitive form of electronica and the basslines suggesting an intimacy with the pre-pop Cure” –The Guardian [UK]

“their debut LP, is a mix of surf revival, updated cold wave (in a similar vein to countryman Lescop), 1960s yéyé and psychedelia” –The Quietus [UK]

“Nuggets-era garage, the organ drones of Clinic and Stereolab and early 80s electro and new wave pop.” –The Line Of Best Fit [UK]

“it’s a style that is astonishingly catchy, natural, and flat-out fun. It’s time to surf the coldwave” –Drowned In Sound [UK]

The Red Paintings Announce Summer U.S. Tour Supporting …Trail of Dead/ Rex Theatre PGH 7/12

VIEW THE VIDEO FOR THE SINGLE “YOU’RE NOT ONE OF THEM”
Los Angeles, CA – July 1, 2013 – Orchestral art rock group The Red Paintings have announced the first leg of an extensive tour throughout the U.S., UK, Europe, and Australia, ahead of the release of their new full-length studio album The Revolution Is Never Coming (The End Records) on October 1st.The band will kick off their North American tour July 10th supporting …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. Known for their vibrant stage shows incorporating live art, human canvases, and theatrics, The Red Paintings are a multi-faceted genre-spanning act with a lively and visionary approach. The band is currently seeking submissions from artists, to curate the live onstage art show to incorporate into their stateside musical performances. For consideration, visit the band’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/TRPartistpage and/or email artsubmissions@theredpaintings.com to submit three jpegs of your art. A full tour itinerary is listed below.
Following the success of a sold out UK club tour with The Pineapple Thief, the band will be bringing their intimate acoustic show to the US, before heading back to the UK to headline the Bizarre Stage at Rebellion Festival, the world’s biggest independent punk and alternative event, on August 9th. The extensive touring news follows a busy end to 2012 that saw The Red Paintings kick off their worldwide campaign with a 16-date US tour and 40-date tour of the UK & Europe.
The band has also been invited to join punk-lords Mindless Self Indulgence on their massive UK & Europe tour in November and December. The invitation follows a sold-out U.S. theatre tour earlier in the year, where the bands established a rapport.
Now available worldwide, the first single taken from the bands’ latest release “You’re Not One Of Them” has already picked up steam overseas, having been added to over 140 stations across the UK & Europe, including spins on XFM, Kerrang, Q and the BBC. Peaking at #40 on the US FMQB commercial radio chart, the track also currently sits at #98 on the German college radio charts. The uniquely creative video clip for the track follows a series of award-winning clips from the band that have been screened at film festivals worldwide and featured in Australia on the television music network Channel V and popular music program Rage. View the video for “You’re Not One of Them”:http://youtu.be/C6NSmhxn9V0.
