ANOTHER DAY DAWNS Release Official Music Video for “Never Okay”!

IMG 4876

Lehighton, PA Hard Alternative Rock Band ANOTHER DAY DAWNS has released the official music video for their single, “Never Ok,” off of their recently released EP, Stranger. Directed by Cyrus Entezam, the track was produced by 900 Management and 900 Records.

Player

“I wanted to get the message out to people that everyone has their own daily struggles. It’s something that needs to be addressed whether we see it or not. I think everyone should hear this. It’s okay to not be okay 100% of the time. I feel that’s what makes the people who are wanting to reach out for help or to talk to a really awkward spot because we put all the focus on that. It’s not ok to point at the fact at how weird they are or different they are, let alone ourselves. There’s gonna be days where we wish we didn’t wake up but we have to push through that mental block that keeps fighting us. The message I wanted to get with this song is, you’re not alone. Many of us hide our problems from society and I think that’s something we as people should help each other more with. Our minds can be a scary place sometimes and all we need is that little bit of comfort to feel alright “ – DAKOTA SEAN

SAMMI DOLL Releases Official Music Video for “AN OM IE”

unnamed

LA based, Dark Pop Rock artist SAMMI DOLL (IAMXKat Von D.) has released the official music video for her debut single, “AN OM IE.” Originally premiered with Alternative Press, “AN OM IE” is an amalgamation of pounding dance beats and industrial keyboard hooks that showcase Sammi’s vocal range and frontwoman persona.

Directed by Ron Underwood, the “AN OM IE” music video features a series of haunting vignettes taking the viewer through a window of bold and artistic imagery, tipping the hat to nostalgic, 90’s color themes.

Player

“ANOMIE theory is the state of social disintegration. We as a society, live within this theory; and we are our own worst enemy.

I’ve been involved in many projects with other bands (IAMX, Bullet Height, Kat Von D, Losers) and this is the first time that I’m branching out on my own. I wrote “AN OM IE” with Sean and Juliette Beavan – they have shown an incredible amount of support and mentorship through the entire process of launching this project. We got in the studio and amalgamated a sound that took influence from a few bands i’m inspired by, the first melody and word to come to my head was “ENEMY” …. which switches later in the song to become AN OM IE.”

“The video began as a concept of vignettes with director Ron Thunderwood. I knew that I wanted to create something beautifully artistic and visually unsettling. We filmed the video over the course of four months due to quarantine restrictions, so we had the luxury of time to build on the characters. I really give my blood, insomnia, and tears to everything I do artistically and tend to think about the consequences later… but I knew I was committed when a frozen octopus from Seattle showed up at my front door…” – SAMMI DOLL

U.K. transplant and Los Angeles based recording artist, Sammi Doll, is best known as the stage right, femme-fatale synth player/backing vocalist for the alternative, synthpop band, IAMX. Upon joining the then German-based band in 2013; Sammi relocated to Berlin while touring extensively through Europe and North America, amassing almost 200k followers across all social media platforms. She began composing her original material along with diving deeper into her other mediums of photography and videography. A chance encounter with Jon Courtney (Pure Reason Revolution) in-between tours led to collaborating on his industrial influenced, prog-rock band, Bullet Height. Signed by Sony/Superball Music, Bullet Height released their critically acclaimed debut LP, “No Atonement.” In February of 2020, Entrepreneur and IAMX collaborator, Kat Von D, announced Sammi would be joining her band on synth and backing vocals for her debut and forthcoming tours. Inspired by her darkwave musical roots, Sammi began creating and mixing a myriad of influences from such bands as Metric, Stabbing Westward, and Grimes to create a sound reminiscent of 90’s electronica /trip-hop, with hard-hitting synthesizers encompassed with dark poetry. Upon teaming up with legendary producer Sean Beavan, (NIN, Manson, 3Teeth, Guns N’ Roses), Doll and Beavan wrote the debut single “AN OM IE”; the first release under her name.

Stating about the new single, Sammi explains: “AN OM IE” refers to the ‘Anomie Theory’ by French sociologist Emile Durkheim. It’s social disintegration; it states ‘individuals in a society are in permanent competition with each other, expect much of existence and demand much of it, & find themselves perpetually haunted by the suffering that arises from the disproportion between their aspirations & their satisfaction.’ We, more than ever, live within an anomic society… & we are our own worst enemies.

Sammi Doll’s debut single, “AN OM IE”; set to release on October 2, to be followed by the music video release premiering on Alternative Press, Tuesday, October 6.

You can catch Sammi Doll with her full band, livestream performance from the Bourbon Room in Hollywood CA here: https://youtu.be/pH7eqVO7AD4 (Filmed & Aired September 12, 2020)

“‘Simple man’ is a song written from the perspective of someone who is removing themselves from the drama or superficial aspects and expectations of social media/society.

Resolved in the strength it takes to be alone and move themselves forward. It’s a narrative on how this person wants to find their own power and focus on clarity of self. “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger” is the mantra and highlights the strength it takes to step away from the shallow world into something more meaningful for themselves. #Go” – MESSER

MESSER means “knife” in German, and the Dallas, Texas band has lived up to its name since cutting an inescapable swath into the rock world with their debut single, “Make This Life.” The band’s cutting edge modern rock sound was born through serendipitous connections in the thriving Deep Ellum music scene of Dallas, an area that has given rise to iconic Hard Rock and Metal bands like PanteraDrowning PoolHell Yeah, and King’s X.

Messer continued their momentum from their breakout year with the release of “Simple Man”, the 3rd single and video from their self-titled debut album, which bowed at #3 on the Soundscan New Artist chart and was named “New and Noteworthy” at iTunes and Amazon Music. The Dallas, Texas based band had a banner year in 2018 with first single “Make This Life” reaching #25 on the Active Rock radio charts, and second single “Save Myself” also made it into the Top 30 – the only truly independent act to do so.

“Simple Man” peaked at #23 on the Active Rock charts, and is the highest charting single for the band to date. It garnered attention throughout the rock world with spots on key Hard Rock playlists on SpotifyApple MusicAmazon MusicPandora RadioGoogle Play MusicYoutube, and Slacker Radio. The band has received accolades from LoudwireAXSAlternative PressRevolverNew NoisePure Grain Audio, and more. All 3 singles were also featured on iHeartradio’s “Artist You Should Know” with adds on Sirius/XM OctaneMusic Choice, and over 70 rock radio stations throughout the United States, resulting in 30,000 spins at rock radio, 15 million combined audience, and 10 million worldwide streams.

The band has since grown their fan base locally, quickly branching out regionally and nationally, opening for notable bands such as Sick PuppiesCandleboxHinderVince NeilBlack Stone CherryLynch MobDrowning PoolLocal HTraptMetallicaDokkenScott Stapp Of CreedAvenged Sevenfold, and Buckcherry, including a 40-city sold out tour with RED and Lacey Sturm. The band was even personally invited by Kevin Lyman to play the Texas leg of the final Vans Warped Tour.

It was on one of these tours that the band caught the attention of Los Angeles based writer/producer, Chad Gendason. The band felt an immediate comeradery with Chad and a lasting bond was made. Messer started writing with Chad, and their first collaboration became “Simple Man”. Fan favorite “Whiskey” soon followed and the songs started to flow into what would eventually become their self-titled debut album, Messer, which released on 4/20/18 on Maddpants Records. The album was mixed by Ben Grosse (Marilyn MansonBreaking BenjaminDisturbed) and mastered by Tom Baker (Papa RoachDavid BowieMotley Crue).

Dereak knew he wanted to pursue singing as a career while in High School in Iowa and started honing his chops with local bands. After high school he moved to Dallas to pursue his music career professionally. His first contact was with Dallas native Javier, who was making a name for himself playing in Jagermeister sponsored bands Mudflap and Pimpadelic. The two bonded at a show and became the genesis of Messer. While looking for a place to get his hair cut, Dereak walked into Maddox’s Hair salon on a whim. The two struck up a conversation about music and another connection was made. Kenny was traveling from his home in Canada to an audition in Phoenix when his car broke down in Dallas. He ended up staying in town and found success playing with the band Strangleweed, who made an appearance on the nationally televised Courtroom show “Eye for an Eye”. That caught the attention of the members of Messer, and Kenny became part of the family. Donnie was playing in various Dallas bands and gaining attention as an award-winning Tattoo artist. Maddox would play Donnie tracks the band was working on and in turn, Donnie would play music he was recording at his own home studio. As Messer continued to develop as a band, they knew they wanted to add an additional guitar player, and they all agreed that Donnie was a great fit. The lineup for Messer was solidified.

In 2019, Messer, with producer Chad Gendason, teamed with Splice.com on a remix contest for their most recent single, “Single Man,” which ultimately led to hundreds of submissions branching all corners of the electronic genre. Due to the overwhelming response, the band and Gendason collected the top 23 remixes to package into a powerhouse remix album, RE:TURN RE:VISIT RE:MIX, which is set to release via Maddpants Records on April 10, 2020.

MESSER is a band that is building a brand of new rock that blurs the line between nostalgia and modern art, leaving the listener with a sound that is not only familiar but also NEW and ADDICTIVE.

Hellbound Hearts was started in Yorkshire in 2011 by singer / bassist Danny and after the usual and numerous ep’s, line up changes and growing pains of any new band, Hellbound Hearts truly found their sound and hit their stride with the acclaimed 2016 debut album Film Noir mixing pop rock sensibilities with dark lyrical content and gothic metal tinged guitars.

Danny, drummer Lee and guitarists Craig and Nathan have taken this ethos even further, crafting a melodic, modern, dark and unique sound for their upcoming 2019 ep release.

While being one of only a few bands around who can actually claim they sound like no one else, comparisons can be drawn to the likes of NirvanaTherapyFoo FightersType O Negative, and Paradise Lost, among others.

Phoenix, AZ based Cinematic Alternative Rock band THE SPIDER HOLE has released the official music video for “The Leviathan Stomp,” the first video off of their hotly anticipated new LP with graphic novel, To the Monsters. Directed by Johnny Wilkerson and front-man Ethan Scott, “The Leviathan Stomp” was exclusively premiered on Dread Central.

Player

“The song ‘The Leviathan Stomp’ is about a wealthy, uptight family who keeps its monstrously deformed son chained up in the basement of their opulent mansion. Naturally, one day the son breaks loose. The “stomp” is him coming up the stairs. We didn’t have access to a mansion or a monster or a rich person, so for the video we just kind of cherry picked the themes of chaos, disease, and duality, and threw it all in a blender. Also, stairs. We found some stairs.” – The Spider Hole

New music is being prepped for a new full-length album called To the Monsters, due near the end of 2019.

A band is not created solely from a group of people deciding to get into a room and write music together, it’s not that simple. Once you’ve found that ‘sound’, it becomes impossible to ignore that you’re now bound to these songs you find yourself pouring every last drop of blood, sweat, and tears into. You will, quite literally, fight for them. It is with those individuals that make up a truly unique and inspiring band. Carpathia and its members have a history, and it all started with Bobby Drinkwater. As an East Boston, Massachusetts native, Bobby has been consistently involved in music, and in 2016 started a nameless band with long term goals. Bobby keeps the conversations short, but has so much to say behind his instruments. Bobby plays multiple instruments including guitar, violin, piano, and drums. Bobby first found co-member Jason Barsotti to join his new project. Born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts, Jason first picked up his drum sticks at the age of 10, and his long term practice has lead him to a fast paced, hard hitting sound that resonates. Jason’s humble and pleasant personality quickly takes a backseat when he steps behind his drumkit. Bobby had continued his search in bandmates close to home when joining forces with Andrew Miller, the two had met and worked together in a previous project back in 2014. Andrew is from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, but has resided in Lynn, Massachusetts since 2013. Throughout Andrew’s life he has been surrounded by family and friends who have been hitting stages in music and comedy. It is no wonder that Andrew’s charismatic humor filled personality would follow in similar footsteps. Andrew has played guitar long term in a number of bands both in North Carolina, and Massachusetts. He had transitioned to playing bass in 2013 for a previous project and found his own unique sound in the process. These three musicians had wrote and played music together between 2016 and 2017 as an instrumental band while trialing a number of potential vocalists. Finally, in January 2017, Samantha Alice of North Kingstown, Rhode Island joined as the last vital part of this project. Samantha brought her strong vocal skills and even stronger personality to the group. Samantha’s history in singing has taken her from talent competitions to all state choir, and beyond. Samantha was first approached by Bobby after meeting at a local show and sparked an interest in trying out for his new project. It took no time at all for the solidification of this band to come to completion and Carpathia was officially named as such on April 22, of 2017.

BURDEN OF THE SKY Releases Official Music Video for “The Puppeteer”!

Promo Pic 1

Alternative Hard Rock/Metal band BURDEN OF THE SKY has released the official music video for their newest single, “The Puppeteer.” Directed by Scottie James and Jason Williams (with assistance from Savannah Bowles), “The Puppeteer” is the second single off of their upcoming sophomore release (due out 2019).

Video

“I tend to get lost in my head quite frequently thinking about life and how we choose to live it. I see a lot of people who get stuck in the cycle of get up, go to work, come home, watch tv, go to bed, and repeat. Falling into this kind of lifestyle terrifies me, and I’ve found music is my escape from that cage. I think a lot of people get stuck into that routine because they are afraid of the unknown, afraid of failure, or just afraid of change. They let their own anxiety and emotions control their fate, much like a puppet is controlled by its strings. My hope is that this song connects with others out there like me who want to take control of their lives. To inspire them to act on what they truly want out of their life.” – Scottie James (Vocals)

Burden Of The Sky is an American Alternative Hard Rock/Metal band. The band was born in 2012, a project of Brad Shaw and Josh Appel. Cinis Ad Cinis, the group’s debut album, came to light in 2017 and pushed the band into the public eye. The album was driven by the lead single “Same Old Page”, which has been streamed worldwide over 800,000 times.

The debut album and new single “Sirens” were produced, mixed and mastered by award winning Nashville Producer/Engineer Colt Capperrune of Dark River Studios. Says Capperrune, “Working on an album like Cinis ad Cinis makes my job as a Producer easy. The songs were extremely strong just the way the band brought them to me.”

In 2018, the band has been reborn. Still lead by Shaw and Appel on guitars, as well as keyboardist Michael Mahoney, bassist Dustin Tritsch, and drummer Rick Streeter, they moved forward with new singer/songwriter Scottie James (Aterra Tale). Infused with new life, the band has moved forward with new material and look forward to their sophomore release in 2019.

Spearfish, SD based electronic alternative rock act Blacklite District has released the official music video for “Hard Pill to Swallow,” the lead single off of their upcoming 4th album, Through the Ages. Originally premiered on Billboard, “Hard Pill to Swallow” was filmed outside the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center in Anaheim, CA by DZFX Media.

“We worked with DZFX Media in Southern California on the video. I literally ran into him at Guitar Center while I was picking up something for our studio sessions for the new album. We started talking right there at the counter and ended up shooting three videos that week, with ‘Hard Pill to Swallow’ being the first.” – Kyle Pfeiffer

Blacklite District has experienced a meteoric rise over the past several months, with their YouTube following edging near 100,000 in less than a year and their wildly popular Minecraft videos–“Cold As Ice” and “The Struggle”–garnering around 70 million views cumulatively. Says Kyle, “I work with multiple major YouTube channels that promote my music to a huge worldwide audience. It’s been amazing as an independent artist of this generation to reach an audience of this size.” As a result of their rapidly expanding youth audience, the duo has seen incredible online sales and Spotify streams and playlistings, as well as significant Mainstream Rock Songs Billboard charting.

Blacklite District follows no rules. With sounds of everything from electronic, EDM and hip hop, to hard rock and alternative, the band truly stands out from the pack of what has becomes today’s generic sounding “Active Rock”. Formed in 2012 by Kyle Pfeiffer and Roman James, ages 12 and 11 respectively, the band grew organically in their local music scene through the years to come. In 2011, BLD was discovered by Grammy Award-winning producer, Stephen Short (Paul McCartney, Queen), which resulted in a 10 day recording session at the world’s largest residential recording studio, Sonic Ranch, just outside of Mexico in Tonillo, TX. The group re-located to Los Angeles and played some of the most famous venues in the world for the remainder of 2011.

In 2013, the group released “With Me Now” as the lead from it’s debut album Worldwide Controversy. “With Me Now” immediately went to #1 on SiriusXM channels Octane and Faction, hit the Top 40 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Chart (#32), and sold 100,000 copies. BLD went on a very successful US tour with Saving Abel in Jan-Apr 2014, with 26 of those shows SOLD OUT. After a legal battle with their management and record label, Blacklite District went on hiatus in late 2014.

On August 23, “The Struggle” was release to radio and To Whom It May Concern went for pre-order at digital retailers. Revolver Magazine premiered the music video for “The Struggle” on August 25. The band also announced a 41 date tour called “The Struggle Is Real Tour”. Blacklite District released a Nightcore remix of “The Struggle” to YouTube on September 6, which got over 2,000,000 plays and resulted in the single breaking the Top 40 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Indicator chart at #36.

One month later, on October 6, the group released a Nightcore remix of “We Are The Danger” which got over 400,000 plays on YouTube. A couple of weeks later, the band released “Broken Souls” to radio, as well as a Nightcore remix which resulted in 500,000 plays and hitting #30 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Indicator. This was the second song in the month of October to break the Top 40 (along with “The Struggle.”)

“The Ghost of You and Me” was released as a music video and a Nightcore remix on December 28, 2016. The song was yet again a success for Blacklite District resulting in 400,000.

On January 20, 2017, BLD released “Living In A Nightmare” as the first single from upcoming album Instant Gratification. With a coinciding Nightcore release, “Living In A Nightmare” broke the Top 25 on the BDS Indicator chart, marking the bands highest spot in chart history. The song has been streamed over 250,000 times.

On February 24, famed radio DJ Lou Brutus posted the bands video for “Cold As Ice”, which was released the same day. The song scored a whopping 350,000 streams in its first week alone, and as of May 2017, has over 3.5 million combined views on YouTube. “Cold As Ice” serves as the second single from Instant Gratification. In the summer of 2017, “Cold As Ice” was added to Spotify’s “Rock Hard” playlist, and was put into rotation on SiriusXM’s alternative channel Faction. In October, “Cold As Ice” was added to rotation on SiriusXM Octane, and it’s Minecraft music video has over 10 million views on YouTube. There are about 4 videos about a Herobrine invasion with zombies and “nether watchers” and how the main character, a player in a blue suit, survives. There are 4 songs in total in the order of The Struggle, Cold as Ice, We are the Danger (possibly not from Blacklite District), and Just so you Know.

Blacklite District released their third album Instant Gratification on September 22, going Top 10 on Amazon’s Top Electronic Albums chart.

Believe It: Royal Canoe’s Ruthlessly Experimental Alternative LP

Despite a surprisingly lengthy career so far, Canada’s Royal Canoe has still been reserved in publicity, but their newest record Today We’re Believers aims to change that. By embracing a spacey and spiritual sound, Royal Canoe takes the vibes from modern indie and almost obsessively deconstructs and reconstructs them. Royal Canoe diverges from the catchy pop hooks and takes a chance by developing music with intense texture. It’s confidently experimental, but not in a way that alienates the typical listener; Today We’re Believers is a record from a band that simply can’t sit still and that desire to stay moving and exploring is what makes the record such a joy to listen to.

Today We’re Believers does a whole lot. There aren’t too many songs that would be considered “radio-friendly” (at least not on the level of their peers like Young the Giant or AWOLNATION), but admirably, Royal Canoe prove their chops with constant experimentation and soundscapey atmosphere. No song on Today We’re Believers sounds the same; the band jumps from genre to genre, taking every class of music and tossing it into a blender. Like the classification-defying project Gorillaz (specifically during the Plastic Beach era), the members of Royal Canoe don’t limit themselves to what their radio-flooding peers are doing. At one point you’ll hear the exotic “Hold on to the Metal” with its toned and tuned guitars, the next you’ll hear a smooth effect-laden electronic groove on “Just Enough.” This sense of impatience actually works to the group’s advantage; Today We’re Believers has a lot of life, all stemming from the band’s desire to keep things interesting and surprising.

The capitalization on electronics lets the group integrate diverse sounds throughout the record. “Light” demonstrates a warped, almost otherworldly vocal mix and escalating pitches in its second half. The buzzy synths of “Bathtubs” blend seamlessly with the constant motions of vocal effects. Royal Canoe have the makings of indie pop success with their Moby-esque mastery of electronic sounds and groove-laden uses of traditional instrumentation. The use of the synthesizers and the blip-bloops of early 2000’s electronica keep their music from getting stale. It’s unabashedly retro, but also captivatingly current; it strikes a balance and settles into a comfortable spot between the past and present.

But are the songs interesting? For the most part, yes. There are a few missteps, like the slightly drawn-out “Stemming”, but Royal Canoe nail the sense of experimentation that their field has brought to life. The most noticeable issue comes from the moments when the experimentation tones itself down and the more traditional musical elements appear. “If I Had a House” has a surprisingly intense vocal punch, but without a sense of quirkiness and “outside the box” drive, the song doesn’t reach the potential of other songs on the album. “Button Fumbla” is a jumbly and upbeat song with infectious bass beats, and while it also has a broad creativity to it, it is another example of Royal Canoe falling into the pitfalls of their radio-friendly peers.

With so many bands trying to capitalize on pleasing crowds, all with a sense of minimalism in their musicianship, it’s very nice to see Royal Canoe take that slimmed-down, straight-ahead approach so seriously. The tracks are constantly shifting in aesthetic and influence, but the fluctuation isn’t distracting. In fact, it’s more enticing than anything; you’re bound to find a favorite across the twelve tracks. Is it perfect? No. Despite having a handle on the electronic elements, Royal Canoe are still trying to get a grip on the traditional elements like guitars and finding a vocal niche. They are by no means bad, but they are still unrefined. There’s still room to grow there. The indie scene is moving closer and closer to not being “indie” anymore; as these originally toned-down musicians attract bigger and bigger crowds, embracing experimentation is harder and harder to do. Royal Canoe take a step down a promising path with Today We’re Believers. If it’s a sign of the band’s musical vision for the future, this is a band that we’re bound to hear more about in the coming months. Keep an eye out for Royal Canoe, and in the meantime, listen to the clever and creative Today We’re Believers.

HORSEBACK Defy Genre with Rarities Collection, A Plague of Knowing

Let’s cut to the chase: HORSEBACK is thoroughly original. No band really sounds like them when they’re in their element. Combining rough and distorted vocals with cosmic, indie-alt production and musicianship, Jenks Miller’s bizarre project defies all identification, priding itself on breaking tradition instead of accessibility. Their latest rarities collection, A Plague of Knowing, over-indulges their sound a bit too much, but still keeps their unclassifiable vibe alive.

HORSEBACK is a very interesting animal in the world of metal. Founded by Mount Moriah guitarist Jenks Miller, HORSEBACK does contain influences from the grindcore vocal world. The rough and growling singing is brutal, but through clever production and subtle uses of atmospheric effects, it sounds spectral and otherworldly, in addition to being heavy. The increased use of distortion adds an almost frightening element to Miller’s vocals; it’s unintelligible, but like many ghosts of horror movies, that lack of coherence makes it even more difficult to understand and more enticing to explore.

From the musical side of things, however, A Plague of Knowing is very un-metal. The heaviness is toned back considerably for progressive rock-influenced ambiance and majestic, ethereal soundscapes. This is a startlingly inventive move that sounds very bizarre at first, but instead shows how to make something intense like growling vocals fit in with one of the least intense fields of contemporary music. Even compared to spacey prog metal like Mastodon’s Crack the Skye of Between the Buried and Me’s Colors, HORSEBACK’s A Plague of Knowing kicks the ambiance into its highest gear, transcending the intense façade and machining its way into higher places. By far, what Miller has truly done with HORSEBACK is abandon all sense of taxonomy; classifying what HORSEBACK is isn’t possible.

A Plague of Knowing is extensive, with 24 tracks composed of live recordings, vinyl songs, demos and rarities from the entire HORSEBACK discography. While seasoned fans will love individual mixes and specific musical endeavors, newcomers aren’t likely to find any specific examples of prowess throughout this collection. A Plague of Knowing is best experienced as a collective and while there aren’t one or two standouts, the entire album is compiled so well as a whole that it’s tough to not get lost in all 24 tracks. For example, “MILH” and “IHVH” merge together well, with spacey production, climbing melodies and the distorted static of Miller’s growls. This storm is quiet, but intense; A Plague of Knowing is so radically different from so many other metal bands that it’s sure to underwhelm the fans of instantly gratifying radio metal. It’s not meant to punch you in the face; it’s meant to slowly weather away the interference before going in for the finisher.

That being said, though, this near-dependence on collectiveness demonstrates a lasting sense of self-indulgence and length. 24 tracks is a lot of music, and with so many of these tracks lasting more than 5 minutes (the closing title track is a whopping 41 minutes long), it can overstay its welcome a bit. It’s very muddled in its continuity; in other longer albums, these extensive passages add a connection and unity between the tracks, telling a bigger story. A Plague of Knowing, however, is no concept album. It’s a rarities collection, so these lengthy songs don’t link together and it can make the longest ones a bit hollow in their meaning. Also, since these songs are already very spacey and atmospheric, A Plague of Knowing isn’t a concentration album, that is, it’s best played in the background and not when you’re actively listening. But that isn’t necessarily a bad thing: A Plague of Knowing has a ton of creativity behind its creator. It’s not focused enough to stand out, but really, it doesn’t need to.

HORSEBACK will not appeal to everyone. It’s an extremely slow burn, even next to its progressive anthem-constructing peers, and it will instantly flop with anyone addicted to adrenaline-soaked radio metal. But those with patience will discover something purely original in HORSEBACK. Judging the album itself, however, isn’t as cut and dry. The immense length of the collection and the very broad song construction can make the entire album sound over indulgent and too long to handle. Once again, it’s an album that not only doesn’t demand active listening, but is best to avoid that. It can’t be recommended as a record where you’ll get lost in every second of every track. But it clicks distantly and effectively. For anyone with a penchant for musical journeys (albeit long ones), you’ll find this rarities collection to hold some wonderful enjoyment. Original and chock full of content, A Plague of Knowing won’t make any new fans, but will secure the reverence of anyone already familiar with HORSEBACK.

RUNNING Premieres “Wanna Weekend” On Brooklyn Vegan

The screech. The wail. The slanted-floor nausea. There’s not a word for the signature cyclical howling that Chicago’s RUNNING have harnessed and tortured into submission. They play with their food before they eat…flay into a terse punk trance, a Kraut-beat psycho riff for ages, mesmerize or terrorize…but invariably they unleash The Sound upon us just when it seems most likely to bring back your lunch. That they’ve built such a mean, spare, and evil band around such chaos is to our benefit – the circular mayhem alone would be a fascinating stand-alone curiosity – but lucky for us, they’ve captured their cacophonous, rotten heart in the black glove of blank-stare punk. Corrosive, serrated, and bilious, RUNNING have conjured a lurking creeper of a record in Vaguely Ethnic. It’s nasty, it’s antisocial, and we’ve got a feeling you’ll like it. Out on Castle Face Records August 6th.

BIG B’S “HERE COMES THE LIGHTNING” VIDEO

Big B Screen Cap

Las Vegas hooligan Big B has just premiered his new video for “Here Comes The Lightning” online with VEVO. “Here Comes The Lightning” was co-written by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter P!nk and producer Butch Walker, and is the first single from Big B‘s new album Fool’s Gold, which hits stores and online outlets July 9th on Suburban Noize Records.

“Here Comes the Lightning” |  VIDEO

“I was lucky enough to work with P!nk and Butch Walker on “Here Comes The Lightning,” says Big B. “We had talked about making music together for a long time and for this record it finally happened. We had Butch Walker produce the track and helped us write some of the music for it. He was working with Panic At The Disco at the time and he took a day off to work with us. Butch had some music that went with the ideas that we had, and as soon as he played us the track, P!nk and I just both grabbed a pen and pad and starting writing to it. It turned out to be an awesome song, and we were fortunate enough to create a dope video to back it up.”

Big B‘s new album Fool’s Gold features musical collaborations with Slightly Stoopid, The Dirty Heads, and members of legendary punk outfits NOFX and Pennywise. The end result is a collection of songs that are just as contagious as Big B‘s thuggish charm. With the entire music industry focused on finding the next huge star on reality television, Big B has taken a back-to-basics approach on Fool’s Gold and filled it with fun and spirited songs that can fit into any music lover’s playlist. The album is rich is musical diversity and is cleverly inventive, as Big B seamlessly bridges the gap between rock, hip-hop, and alternative.

Fans can catch Big B on tour this summer with The Dirty Heads and The Expendables on the Cabin By The Sea Tour throughout June and July. Dates are below.

Victory is the music project of Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Robert Fleming who produces new songs that are at once fresh, familiar and focused.  ‘Demonstrations’ was the first offering from Victory, a 7-song EP self-released in September 2011 and his first full length is set to see the light in April 23rd, 2013.  Victory crafts a sound that is both a throw-back to psychedelic 60’s British rock as well as an homage to today’s thriving independent music scene.

In his freshman debut, Fleming comes out of the gate with a consistent release that is a unique approach to pop rock. With a gravelly blues tone in his voice, Victory’s mastermind brings a definitive swagger and charisma to his thumping party starters. Take for example his singe “Play It”, which was featured in a Cadillac XTS commercial. It’s got the vibe of a party-hopping late night bender fueled by the energy of gritty synth bass lines and LCD Soundsystem-esque vocal chanting.

There is something slightly retro, slightly Atari 2600, slightly Betamax, yet strikingly current about Victory’s style. Rhythmically there is a high level of sophistication present, and the percussive arrangements and production are distinctly modern in there approach. The album Victory Is Music as a whole is definitely an energetic ride throughout, stylistically maintaining a gritty blues electro pop vibe. Overall this is a strong entry for this LA-based newcomer who finds beauty in the everyday noise of the city, and art in the conflict of the day.

Eric and Magill’s Two Travellers EP To Be Released On February 19th

Quite simply, Eric & Magill is Ryan Weber and Eric Osterman, two rather accomplished musicians, long time friends, and travelers. Together they create cosmic soundscapes from separate corners of the world, often enlisting a supporting cast of notable contemporaries and friends. With little more than Wi-Fi and laptops, they’ve developed a collaborative relationship across time zones and continents. There was a time however, when they weren’t so far apart.

Originally from Milwaukee, they first played together in Camden, an indie favorite with shoegaze flavor. After only a handful of EPs and one stellar full-length – the gorgeous Reel Time Canvas, produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) – they disbanded while on the brink of bigger things. After they disbanded, Osterman followed his heart to Michigan and Weber enlisted Camden alum William Seidel to form the indie-folk outfit Decibully while moonlighting with The Promise Ring. The two friends drifted apart as you do when life happens, but not so far that they couldn’t easily fall in with each other again.

In 2007, Weber took up a teaching post in Armenia for a year; it was in this faraway place where he began the initial sketches of a new project. Reaching out to Osterman was a natural step; writing together again was a matter of exchanging tracks over email. Taking the concept one step further, they invited myriad friends to participate, including members of Shearwater, Dirty Projectors, Owen and a slew of hometown heroes like Maritime, Hey Mercedes, and The Championship. The resulting record, All Those I Know, is a dream-pop composition marked at times by lush reverb and at others, by delicate folk melodies. Released first as a free download in the late winter of 2010, it was pressed in limited-edition vinyl (Ten Atoms) the following summer.

Forever traveling, in 2011 Weber joined the Peace Corps in Kenya while Osterman relocated to Brooklyn. Apart from the inherent challenges of place, little had changed in their creative process. Still the laptops, the Internet connection, the revolving cast of musicians – this time including (amongst others) members of The Delgados, Snailhouse, and Faunts. Night Singers builds on the framework of All Those I Know, building upon the band’s hallmark vocals flush with reverb. The end result is an album full of glittering, hushed moments juxtaposed against electro-pop gems.

The coming year will see the release of Night Singers (May) proceeded by an EP, the aptly titled Two Travelers. Two Travellers will be available via Bandcamp as a free download for a limited time. And further travel. Weber returns from Kenya and Osterman has his eye on the Midwest. At the core Eric & Magill are two individuals, but who they are collectively is a reflection of their travels, their relationships and the connectivity of this great spinning world.

PRAISE FOR INTERNAL LOGIC

“With spot-on production and their most engaging material yet, Grass Widow come into their own on Internal Logic, and have given themselves enough room to grow into something more vivid and lasting than ever before.” – All Music Guide

“Internal Logic pits fractious churn and friction against head-spinning harmonies, and here’s the surprise, everybody wins.” – BLURT Magazine

“[Internal Logic’s] catchiness and complexity manifest in equal measures: at no point does the the song’s composition undercut its pop sensibility.” – Dusted Magazine

“The trio twine their voices around one another, threading their way through skeletal rhythms and barely distorted guitars, the sonic equivalent of a scarlet ribbon caught in a winter tree.” – FILTER Magazine

“The San Francisco trio’s strength lies in the very thing that makes them so beguiling – the vocals – and tightening what goes on around them helps make Internal Logic a wholly charming album” – NYLON

“The songs on Internal Logic are like triple-exposed photographs, their nebulous, hazy qualities occasionally belying the acute skill with which they’ve been composed. It feels fortunate that Grass Widow arrived on the scene a few years too late to be lumped in with the mid-aughts post-punk revival, because they’ve honed an approach that feels more personal and self-contained than it does trendy.” – Pitchfork

THE CHARIOT DEBUT NEW SINGLE, “IN” “ONE WING” AVAILABLE AUGUST 28th, 2012

Atlanta’s own THE CHARIOT has debuted a brand new track titled, “In,” today exclusively via Altpress.com. Click HERE to listen! “This song was originally going to be the opening track to ‘One Wing.’ It was a last minute decision to move it further in down list, and I think it was for the better.” says frontman Josh Scogin. THE CHARIOT will release “One Wing,” on August 28th, 2012.

Scogin continues, “The song still has the strength of an opener but this record is a journey and for that reason alone it belongs at track 7. One Wing was designed to be heard in chronological order but having said that, I think this song does a pretty good job standing all alone as well.”

The band recently launched pre-order packages with brand new merch designs. Each physical preorder from the band will receive a link to a live version of “Speak” and the track “and” from the “One Wing” demo recording sessions.

In a recent interview the band was asked what their mindset was when going into the studio on “One Wing,” and front man Josh Scogin commented, “Let’s get weird.”

THE CHARIOT is: Josh Scogin (vocals), Stephen “Stevis” Harrison (guitar), David Kennedy (drums) and Brandon Henderson (guitar).
