“Seasons’ is a song written about battling mental illness. The chorus ‘Seasons cry for no one’ is a play on words referencing seasonal depression directly, but the song is meant to represent an internal struggle with one’s demons.” – Brendan Maier (Chout)

Emperor Of Sand finds Mastodon returning to a deeply imaginative and complex conceptual storyline that ponders the nature of time. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the band conjures the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass. “Emperor of Sandis like the grim reaper,”says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. “Sand represents time. If you or anyone you know has ever received a terminal diagnosis, the first thought is about time. Invariably, you ask, ‘How much time is left?'”
“We’re reflecting on mortality,” adds bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders. “To that end, the album ties into our entire discography. It’s 17 years in the making, but it’s also a direct reaction to the last two years. We tend to draw inspiration from very real things in our lives.”

Emperor Of Sand was recorded at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw, just outside Mastodon’s hometown of Atlanta, with producer Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Neil Young, AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine), whofirst worked with Mastodon on their seminal 2009 album Crack The Skye.
Over the course of Mastodon’s career, the band members have fearlessly continued to push themselves towards greater creative heights on their recorded output. Each studio album has united an ever-expanding worldwide legion of fans who have come to expect the unexpected twists and turns that have elevated Mastodon to become one of the most respected and influential creative forces in rock music.
“Mastodon are the greatest metal band of their generation – no one else comes close.” Rolling Stone
“The coolest band in rock!” Drum! Magazine
“Chances are you could use heavier rock in your life, and Mastodon’s riff-heavy epics are as friendly to non-metalheads as they are to heshers.” New York magazine

With its members collectively hailing from a varied range of metal, punk, hip hop, and psych scenes,DETHBEDS marries this diversification with explosive fury; the result is a relentlessly energetic attack heavily influenced by the likes of Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Refused, Botch, and more. Offers the band alongside the release of their debut record’s title track, “The most recently written song on the album, ‘Dungeon Scum’ provides contrast from our overall punk ethos to a more punishing and sophisticated writing style that reflects our combined influences.”
Scope out Decibel’s stream of DETHBEDS’ “Dungeon Scum” at THIS LOCATION.

Most of Dungeon Scum was written in Michigan, before the band was a fully realized project. Following their migration to Chicago, the band fine-tuned the tracks and recorded the album with Adam Stilson at Decade Music Studios, located inside of DIY music venue The Observatory, after which it was mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room, and completed with cover art by Tom Jenkins at Black Eagle Press.

Middle Class Rut To Hit The Road This April With Chevelle + Headlining Tour in February, March

“Their sound is nothing short of colossal, and one that a mere two‐piece shouldn’t be able to create, combining the boisterous swagger and pomp of Jane’s Addiction and the feral fury of Rage Against the Machine.” – Kerrang!

We are proud to announce that the Sacramento, CA-based duo Middle Class Rut will be embarking on an exciting new tour this April where they will open for Chicago rock actChevelle.

Middle Class Rut has toured with Chevelle in the past, as well as with the likes of Muse, Social Distortion, Them Crooked Vultures, Alice In Chains, 30 Seconds To Mars andLinkin Park, among others. Before hitting the road with Chevelle in April, MCR will also perform a string of headlining dates with Dinosaur Pile Up and Brick and Mortar; see all dates below.

Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Zack Lopez and vocalist/drummer Sean Stockham, Middle Class Rut raised the bar with their latest release, June 2013’s Pick Up Your Head, which sees the duo opening up their sound. “We realized we’d exhausted everything we could do with drums, guitar, and vocals,” Lopez explains. “Once we decided to take an ‘anything goes’ approach, the songs poured out. We were freer with layering and didn’t worry if we couldn’t reproduce it live, as long as we captured the music with the highest energy possible.”

REVIEW: German rock legends The Scorpions release MTV Unplugged in Athens on Bluray, DVD, and CD

When it comes to making immaculately crafted acoustic sets that warrant repeated listens, MTV Unplugged has a nearly unparalleled track record. For a program and recording series that has spanned more than twenty years, and seen such a wide and disparate cast of talents, the show has become a cornerstone for acoustic sets. From Alice In Chains and Pearl Jam, to Led Zepplin and Kiss, to LL Cool J and Jay-Z, one thing remains the same, and that is the consistency and standard they hold to the audio quality of all of their recordings.

On the latest release, Scorpions Unplugged In Athens, MTV has stayed true to their format and delivered another high quality performance from a group of musical legends. The release, a CD-DVD combo set, is set below the stars in a gorgeous open-air amphitheatre in Athens in front of a decent sized crowd Scorpions loyalists. The band has come dynamically well equipped and full bodied to this performance, appropriating 6 additional musicians, a full 8-piece string section accompaniment from the group Strings From Heaven, as well as special guest appearances from Morten Harket, Johannes Strate, CATHE, and Dimitra Kokkori. The sound is full and rich, the quality is exceptional, and most of all the music is on point, staying true to the spirit and energy the Scorpions have been conjuring since the early seventies.

All the huge classics are here in spades: “Rock You Like a Hurricane“, “No One Like You“, “Send Me an Angel“, “Still Loving You“, and “Wind of Change“. The instrumental arrangements are dynamic and robust, doing justice to the sound that brought these German rock legends international fame and recognition. Around every corner there are visually as well as audibly interesting details that make watching worth the price of admission. For instance, the finger picking insanity at the beginning of “Speedy’s Coming”, or any of the mid-set solos illustrating the guitar chops and expertise of a lifetime of performing.

As this Unplugged album comes on the heels of the worldwide Scorpions farewell tour, it seems these guys are alive and still kicking. While they’ve had a long touring history and become heavy metal icons, it seems fitting to see a group that have been together for the better part of forty years to step into a subtler arena and do an acoustic set. Although the boys have additionally confirmed after the farewell tour that they will not be breaking up, it seems that they might be ready to step back and take some time to reflect. Overall this is an entertaining set, albeit a bit relaxed and calmed down compared to the Scorpions early catalog. A must have for any die-hard Scorpions fan.

Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang Reveal Alice In Chains Cover “Man in the Box”, “Four Foot Shack” Out 2/4

Alice in Chains’ “Man in the Box” is a staple of ‘90s hard rock that no musician has dared try to genre bend – until now. Featured on the upcoming album Four Foot ShackLes Claypool’s Duo de Twang has created a rootsy, banjo-filled rendition of the track that completely turns the original version on its head. Listen via SPIN HERE.

Upon listening to Four Foot Shack you’ll quickly discover that Les and Bryan made it a point to keep things as live-sounding as humanly possible. “It was very live,” admits Les. “In fact, it was a little difficult, with all the bleed of the stomping and the bass and the vocals. Every now and again you can hear the studio refrigerator come on or the dog barking at something outside in the background.  Once it was there, you had to kind of leave it.”

Head below to find out when Duo de Twang’s live show will be making its way to your town, including a unique NYC performance at the McKittrick Hotel’s Sleep No MoreExperience; tickets for all shows can be pre-ordered HERE, and Four Foot Shack can be pre-ordered HERE.

Alice in Chains Kick Off a Grunge Weekend for Pittsburgh

Alice-In-Chains-2013

One of my favorite rock star encounters to tell is the time I ran into Layne Staley, the now deceased singer of Alice in Chains, back in the early nineties in a bar near Ft. Lauderdale.  I had been living in Miami for a few months, crashing on friends floors, making ends meet by working landscaping with Cuban illegals and down and out guys who lost everything due to their addictions and were trying to get their lives back together, having met the owner of the company through AA.  My friend from college whose floor I was sleeping on was dating the manager of the company who was kind enough to let me plant palm trees and work on Julia Iglesias’ house inbetween looking for other work.  Anyways, I was still pretty broke and living on Taco Bell bean burritos so I could not afford to go see Alice in Chains and their opener GrunTruck playing in Miami.  Thus, I was fairly bummed.

My former next door neighbor happened to move to North Miami Beach and she took me out to a bar to buy me a few brews to cheer me up.  There I am nursing my beer minding my own business and this scraggly guy comes up to the bar with a cane and his leg in a case.  It’s fucking Layne.  I could not believe it.  He was fairly lucid. “Layne, can I get you a beer?” I said sheepishly.  “Sure, man, thanks,” replied Layne in a deep growl never really looking at me in his sunglasses.  Layne had recently broke his leg on tour and it was in a full cast.  Searching for some kind of conversation with the man I simply said, “How’s your leg?”  To which he replied, “It’s just a fuckin’ leg man.”  And then he walked off and sat with some people and we never spoke again.

Some twenty odd years later and Layne is long gone but Alice in Chains  is still very much alive.  They certainly proved it last night in Pittsburgh.  Oddly playing the Benedum Theater, usually reserved for the ballet and opera or the likes of Tony Benett, AIC brought the rock right out of the gate.  New lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist William DuVall sounds exactly like Staley while looking a lot more like Lenny Kravitz and he proved more than able to fill those shoes and carry on not only as replacement but as a true contributor just as he has done since we first heard him belt out “Check My Brain” in 2009.  But Jerry Cantrell’s band did not focus on newer material most of the evening, they certainly knew their audience well and stuck to the meat of what the audience came to see and that was classic Alice.  Second in the set was “Them Bones” with high points in the evening being “Dam That River”, “Down In A Hole”, and of course “Would?”.  The tremendous encore consisted of ” Man in the Box”, “No Excuses”, and “Rooster”.  That last tune was made extra amazing by the special appearance of The Rooster himself, Jerry’s dad.

Jerry Cantrell continues to prove why he is one of the best axe men in the business and a tremendous songwriter and riff master.  Sean Kinney and Mike Inez still keep it down extremely well and prove you can still put on a great rock show without a ton of fluff and smoke.  It’s a great way to warm up the weekend for their Seattle brethren Soundgarden stopping by on Sunday at Stage AE.  Grunge is alive and well people. Layne Staley and Mike Starr…RIP.

Mad Season Above Deluxe Reissue

From SPIN:

Rare Footage and Interviews

February 27 2013, 10:52 AM ET
by David Bevan

In preparation for the deluxe, expanded re-release of the grunge supergroup’s landmark debut

“I remember that we laughed a lot,” says Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin, of writingAbove, the lone (and beloved) 1995 release from Seattle supergroup Mad Season. “We laughed about being sober for the first time, and the newsness of that. We laughed at ourselves and a lot of the stupid things we’d done as young men.”

It’s a memory that stands in moving contrast to the soon-to-be-reissued full-length’s relatively somber origin story: Having just left a rehab facility in Minnesota after the completion of 1994’sVitalogy, Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready approached Martin and Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley about the prospect of writing together, in hopes of helping the latter gain some distance from a battle with addiction that would haunt him until his death in 2002. Joining them on bass was late Chicago native John “Baker” Saunders, a friend and fellow rehab alum. “It was kind of a failed attempt at trying to get everybody to not be drinking or doing drugs,” says McCready. “Not that you can really control that. You have to figure that out for yourself. It’s been really hard to go back and listen. I miss Baker. I miss Layne. I wonder how Layne would be met these days, what kind of music he’d be making or if he’d be a father. And his lyrics [on Above] in particular still sound fresh to me. They still make me feel, and that’s good.”

Above, Martin adds, is the only album comprised entirely of Staley-penned lyrics, many of which were inspired by a spiritually minded, Kahlil Gibran-enriched stack of books the late vocalist carried with him from place to place in a backpack. Coupled with compositions that remain outliers for their time, the result was a delicate, blues-driven set whose recording the foursome financed themselves, just weeks after they performed for the first time at a sold-out performance at Seattle’s legendary Crocodile Cafe. “It has a certain mood and a certain quality to it that no other records of that time really have,” says Martin. “There’s a real atmosphere to it. And when I listen to it, it just makes me happy. I’m sad about my friends being gone, but I also feel proud that we all left behind a beautiful piece of music. You can’t always say that.”

On April 2, the album will get a deluxe re-release in expanded form, including three songs originally meant to appear on Disinformation, a second Mad Season full-length that never came to be. And because Staley never recorded vocal takes, Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan stepped in to complete them with fresh vocals and lyrics of his own. Hear the genesis of both the reissue (which also includes a disc dedicated to the group’s show at Seattle’s Moore Theater on April 29, 1995) and that collaboration in the exclusive mini-doc above. You can pre-order it now on iTunesAmazon and Pearl Jam’s Ten Club store. Additionally, there will be double 12″ LP of the re-issue made available for Record Store Day on April 20.

Finally, The band has released a fan made lyric video for the single “Hollow” for the as yet untitled and no release date specified. Cantrell recently told Guitar World, “It’s like having to deal with the sophomore jinx for the second time in our career,” said guitarist Jerry Cantrell of the pressure to follow 2009’s Black Gives Way to Blue. “In my opinion, that record stood up to anything else we’ve put out in our career. Kill Devil Hill Debut

The self-titled debut album from KILL DEVIL HILL, with legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL, KILL DEVIL HILL), Rex Brown (PANTERA, DOWN) on bass, Mark Zavon (RATT, W.A.S.P., 40 CYCLE HUM) on guitar and Jason “Dewey” Bragg (PISSING RAZORS) on vocals has been tearing up the metal charts.

“Kill Devil Hill” was produced by Warren Riker, (DOWN, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SUBLIME and CATHEDRAL). The KILL DEVIL HILL release will be available in a standard CD edition, an iTunes digital download, and double gatefold LP.

According to Vinny Appice, KILL DEVIL HILL’s sound is “like a cross between BLACK SABBATH, ALICE IN CHAINS and a little bit of LED ZEPPELIN thrown in. It’s heavy, but with a lot of cool hooks and melodic overtones, too.”
