BOARDING HOUSE REACH sees Jack White expanding his musical palate with perhaps his most ambitious work thus far, a collection of songs that are simultaneously timeless and modern. Written and conceived while holed up in a spartan apartment with literally no outside world distractions, White exclusively used the same kind of gear he had when he was 15 years old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer, and the most basic of instrumentation). The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain — crunching rock ‘n’ roll, electro and hard funk, proto punk, hip hop, gospel blues, and even country — all remapped and born anew to fit White’s matchless vision and sense of restless experimentation. BOARDING HOUSE REACH is a testament to the breadth of Jack White’s creative power and his bold artistic ambition.

BOARDING HOUSE REACH features White on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars and drums, organ, and synthesizers. He’s backed by a remarkable new lineup of musicians that includes: drummer Louis Cato (Beyoncé, Q-Tip, John Legend, Mariah Carey), bassists Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger) and NeonPhoenix (Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z), synthesizer players DJ Harrison and Anthony “Brew” Brewster (Fishbone, The Untouchables), keyboardists Neal Evans (Soulive, Talib Kweli, John Scofield) and Quincy McCrary (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Pitbull), percussionists Bobby Allende (David Byrne, Marc Anthony) and Justin Porée (Ozomatli), and backing vocalists Esther Rose and Ann & Regina McCrary of Nashville’s beloved gospel trio, The McCrary Sisters, as well as longtime collaborators like drummers Daru Jones (Nas, Talib Kweli) and Carla Azar (Autolux, Depeche Mode, Doyle Bramhall II). Singer-songwriter C.W. Stoneking also appears, contributing a stirring spoken word performance to the album’s “Abulia and Akrasia.”

BOARDING HOUSE REACH was produced by Jack White III and recorded at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN, Sear Sound in New York, NY, and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, CA; the album was mixed by Bill Skibbe, Joshua V. Smith, and White at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN.

“Connected By Love” b/w “Respect Commander” is available now digitally worldwide and as a physical 7-inch vinyl single pressed at Third Man Pressing in Detroit, MI. The single is accompanied by a brand-new music video from director Pasqual Gutierrez – watch it now HERE.

“Connected By Love” was greeted with rapturous global applause upon its arrival earlier this month, withRolling Stone exclaiming, “The four-year wait is over” with the “blistering first single” from BOARDING HOUSE REACHBillboard declared the song “a classic White confessional blues burner,” while Entertainment Weeklycalled it “thrillingly weird…a searing, organ-lined plea to a former flame.” NPR‘s Bob Boilen raved: “Connected By Love” is “a blend of old guitar blues that is simultaneously on the edge of rock’s horizon.”

White and Third Man Records have also revealed details of their BOARDING HOUSE REACH-themed Vault Package #35, marking the ONLY limited edition of the new album. Vault Package #35 is highlighted by a limited edition, colored vinyl version of BOARDING HOUSE REACH that will be the only vinyl variation of the LP to be made available. Pressed at Third Man Pressing in the Cass Corridor of Detroit, the 180-gram, blue and black swirl vinyl edition features exclusive Vault-only cover art which dramatically depicts White’s stylized face and is printed on arresting holographic foil paper in the classic Stoughton tip-on style. The LP is further accompanied by a unique-to-this-package 12″ x 24″ insert featuring the complete album lyrics.

The BOARDING HOUSE REACH Vault package also includes a two-song demo 7-inch single, offering up embryonic versions of “Connected By Love” and the album track, “Why Walk a Dog?” The former take – billed here under its original title, “Infected By Love” – was recorded entirely by White in the aforementioned Nashville apartment. White found keyboard tones on this recording that the world’s most seasoned session musicians could not recreate in the studio and thus, some of those tones were sourced from this simple demo to be utilized on the final album version. Meanwhile, “Why Walk a Dog?” was recorded, like much of the BOARDING HOUSE REACH demos, alone at his private songwriting refuge. With its expressive synth and drum machine cadence, the track is overtly hypnotic even in this early state. Indeed, the “Connected By Love” and “Why Walk a Dog?” single provides a fascinating insight into White’s process, revealing the creative progression of his songs from inception to completion.

In addition to the recorded material, Vault Package #35 comes with three separate and exclusive photographs shot during BOARDING HOUSE REACH recording sessions. Taken by noted photographer – and White’s longtime friend – David Swanson at Sear Sound in New York and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, these large-format, high quality glossy reproductions are exclusive to the Vault. The photographs will be coupled with three foil-stamped poetry broadsides, printed on silky metallic papers (black, white, and blue) containing White’s poems from the new album tracks, “Abulia and Akrasia,” “Ezmerelda Steals the Show,” and “Get in the Mind Shaft.”

Lastly, BOARDING HOUSE REACH Vault Package #35 will also include, for the third year running, a custom 2018 Third Man Records challenge coin, complete with album-specific artwork. The substantial and stylish coin doubles as a 45 adaptor and grants its holder 10% off purchases in both Third Man Records storefronts. Past Third Man Challenge coins will no longer be valid at Third Man storefronts once Vault Package #35 ships.

Third Man Vault subscriptions are open now through January 31. All BOARDING HOUSE REACH Vault packages will ship to arrive on and as close to the album’s official March 23 street date. Learn more about this package, additional Vault benefits and subscribe now at Third Man Records HERE.

“I’ve admired [John Paul’s] work both as a musician and a producer for so long. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to tour with him. It seems like something that should’ve happened a long time ago!” Lynn says referencing her first tour with White.

John Paul White is touring in support of his latest album, Beulah, while Lera Lynn is currently writing for her next studio release.

American Songwriter names Lynn’s latest album Resistor as one of their Top 50 Albums of 2016    –   “it’s a rock record at its core, packed with aggression and taunting vamps that are anchored by Lynn’s clever lyricism, daring composition and super-sensual vocals.” – Marissa Moss, American Songwriter

Listen to Lera’s interview with NPR Weekend Edition about Resistor here.

You can also watch the striking videos for Resistor standouts “Drive” and “Shape Shifter.”

Here’s what else the press are saying about Lera Lynn.

“The heat is in lyrics about desire, pain, betrayal and revenge….the cool is in languorous slow tempos, minor chords, ruthlessly laconic arrangements, guitar lines swathed in reverb and a voice that smolders a long time before it flares up.”

-New York Times

“Lynn has a gift for sensory subtlety, and she uses it to get at emotional truths”

NPR Music

“At once spacey and specific…Baritone guitars, keyboards and looped drums fill the background, while Lynn’s voice — a natural descendent of Hope Sandoval and Margo Timmins’ woozy wails — wafts into the spotlight, singing songs that occupy the outer limits of Americana and indie rock.”

-Rolling Stone

“The Texas native’s delivery…is alternately delicate and menacing, vulnerable and moody.”

-Paste

“Filling Lynn’s remarkable compositions with exactly enough sound to create an atmosphere for the songs. In some places, they toy with rhythm, in others they tease out the spaces between notes, and in others still, the emphasis is Lynn’s vocal – so completely unique that I can’t think of a single comparison.”

-No Depression

“[Prefers] to push boundaries and create challenging often unsettling music that encourages multiple spins to reveal its substantial pleasures.”

-American Songwriter

ABOUT GREEN DAY
Green Day is an American punk rock band composed of vocalist/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool. Formed in 1986, Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band’s early releases were with the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, its major label debut Dookie (released through Reprise Records) became a breakout success and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the United States. Green Day was widely credited with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.  Green Day’s follow up albums Insomniac (1995) and Nimrod (1997) each sold over two million albums and were certified Double Platinum, and Warning (2000) was certified Platinum.  2004 brought the band’s rock opera American Idiot which reignited the band’s popularity with a younger generation and sold over six million copies in the United States.  Green Day is one of the world’s best-selling bands of all time, having sold more than 75 million records worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway.  On April 18, 2015, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a part of the 2015 class in what was their first year of eligibility for induction. On October 16, 2015, Green Day released the documentary Heart Like A Hand Grenade, an unprecedented behind the scenes look at the writing and recording of their legendary album American Idiot.

REVIEW: Hangout Festival 2016

For 7 years now 25,000 humans descend on sleepy little Gulf Shores, Alabama for Hangout festival. With sunshine, sea and sugar like sand it’s an easy sell despite any line up. It’s a coastal vacation and music festival in one happy little package. Only a 16 hour drive stands between Pittsburgh and glitter doused bikinis and the smell of sunscreen on the ocean breeze.

All festivals have glitches; this year Hangout was no exception. Pouring rains and fierce lightning delayed day 1 by 4 hours. Additionally headliner Calvin Harris was pulled from the line up do to an automobile accident.

Despite all this, the rest of days were filled with festival fun. Since it is a beach location all stages are literally in the sand. The festival had 2 beach access points for a quick dip in the Gulf. Obstacle courses, hammocks, kickball, slip and slides and campfires add to set break amusement. Throw in the requisite Ferris wheel, a drop ride and some carnival games (Along with great vendor stations) and there is nothing else you could want.

This year’s musicians also held something for everyone. Here are the highlights…

The VIP pre-party (Thursday) included decent sets by Grouplove and Matt and Kim but a real highlight was the Seratones out of Shreveport. This 4 person jam session was pure old style rock and roll. Referring to themselves as ‘beasts from the southern wild’ singers AJ Haynes has soul in her soul. Unsigned just 1 year ago the band now resides with names like The Black Keys at Fat Possum Records. Check their debut album Get Gone that was just released earlier this month.

Friday’s small stage favorite was The Struts out of the U.K. Glammed up front man Luke Spiller gave off heavy Bowie vibes and the band laid down an awesome sound that literally drew passersby in.

Friday headliners started with Alabama Shakes. Having been listening to them forever I was pretty stoked to catch it live. While Sound and Color has a different feel than Boys and Girls, Brittany & Co. did not disappoint. Damn that girl can sing. That’s all. Enough said.

Pop stardom names Like The Chainsmokers and The Weeknd finished up the night as expected-if its your thing, it was solid. If it wasn’t you could have caught it on the radio.

Saturday evening featured a supremely talented Leon Bridges. Everyone was talking about this one. Think a young Sam Cooke, with only 1 album under his belt, this youngster is one to watch.

Cage the Elephant was in fine form. Leaping off stages and riling up a packed stage there was no disappointment there. Stage presence alone scores these guys points.

The absolute highlight of the weekend was Nahko and Medicine for the People. Being a somewhat unknown band they have a grassroots cult-like following-for good reason. These gentlemen are musically talented but also have a message to share. They are on a mission to make the world a better place (seriously) and even if their sound is not your thing, their “voice” is something you cannot ignore.

Panic @ the Disco replaced Calvin Harris as the Saturday closer. What can you say about these dudes? Their wardrobe game is strong, they are pretty, they can sing and they entertain. As closers go, they were the perfect fit.

The final day brought crooner Mayer Hawthorne. If you have only heard and never seen them it is a pleasure. They have the old Motown thing down pat. Picture black velvet damask cloths over stage equipment and coordinating wardrobes. During his intro, Mayer has a seat and pours himself what is presumably a glass of liquor from a glass decanter. The set is just as smooth. Mayer does not disappoint.

While Ellie Goulding brought loads of young followers the whole show felt very Brittney Spears (minus the wardrobe) to me. Backup dancers, pop sound and loads of lip gloss.

But Lenny…Lenny Kravitz was, well, Lenny. Much to the disappointment of the ladies there was no hang out at Hangout but the collective female sigh could be heard for miles. I’m pretty sure he sang…

Florence + The Machine closed out the festival. Even if her style is not your first choice the show was a crowd pleaser. A sparkling backdrop, wispy transparent dress, red tresses flowing in the wind all made for an ethereal set that matched her tone.

So what about the little guys? The daytime, side stage folks? Couldn’t tell you.  I was lying in the sand, listening to the waves and looking up at the big blue sky. You want to check the day shows? You go next year.
