Anarbor Tour (@Smiling Moose Pittsburgh) 2017: Review and Photos!

words and pix: Abigail McNatt
The local music scene is highly underrated. There are so many different kinds of bands that fall in this scene and are so talented. If I could tell anyone in this city who loves music anything, it would be to attend small shows and listen to bands and artists that don’t have a lot of likes or followers or listens.
One of those bands whose shows I attend quite often (and shoot all the time) is Vertigo. They are a local pop/rock band who play a ton of local shows. They were first on stage at the Smiling Moose on this cold Saturday evening in Pittsburgh. They are a fun band to shoot because you can tell they love what they’re doing and they get the crowd involved as well. I saw a good amount of people in front of the stage bobbing their heads to the groovy music. Overall, their set was very fun and enjoyable. I highly recommend readers to check them out in the link above.
Next on stage was Baltimore pop/rock band, Skyward Story. The previously named band, 3PM, put on a super fun set. Girls went wild for them. Some came from far and wide just to see them play. They interacted well with their crowd and performed many originals but also did Ed Sheeran‘s “Castle on the Hill”. Overall their set was very fun and I enjoyed every second of it. If boy bands are your thing, go check them out!
Going along with the local band theme, next up was pop/punk band from Pittsburgh, Milly. They were pretty cool. Being in the smaller music scene, I was surprised I hadn’t heard of them before. I thought they were pretty good! The crowd was enjoyed it as well it seemed. So if you’re into the local music scene, go check them out in the link above!
The next band, who was also the band touring with Anarbor, was Sundressed. They describe themselves as “emotive punk”. They surprised me because I expected more a more pop/rock sound considering the bands that played prior to them. But they were pretty good. They seemed really into their performance and got the crowd pumped up. So if you’re into the more “emotive punk” type music, go look them up!
Last but not least, the band we were all waiting for… Anarbor. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re considered alternative rock and they’re amazing. They get super into it and the fans were all over the place. They were dancing, singing along, and just enjoying every second they were there. The band had great interaction and put on a wonderful, upbeat performance. So if you haven’t heard of them, go look them up. I provided links to each band above!
Overall, it was a great night and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Some of the photos are showcased below and the rest are featured here.

Concert Review: Rusted Root Pittsburgh PA @ Station Square

Review and photos: Ed Thompson

Heading out to cover and photograph Rusted Root this past Friday was more than an adventure.  It was more of a goal and vision. Keep in mind, this review is not meant to be about me at all. But my health recently took a turn for the worse having been diagnosed with skin cancer.  The date on the calendar that was circled for my surgery was June 22nd. The next date circled and marked was June 23rd. The night I was going to cover and photograph a band I have always liked and felt a “powerful” feeling to over the years. That band is Rusted Root. And the band also promised to perform some new material for the first time ever. So, I was even more excited and had more urgency to get to the show. Rusted Root is a brand that I feel I kind of got to hear developed back in the years 1986-1989 while hanging out with lead singer Michael Glabicki and Jenn Wertz in high school. Hearing the two of them sing with Mike playing his guitar have always been powerful and great memories to me.

Fast forward to this past Thursday, with half my face bandaged and swollen from my surgery, I felt the need to get to the Root show and see and hear Mike and his bandmates play their rhythmic, tribal and powerful hymns to help me heal and more so “feel good”. And it worked!! For those two hours, I felt like everyone else and my pain truly disappeared. I also never once felt the big bandages that covered half my face.  For that, I thank this great group of musicians and individuals.

With THAT out of the way. Rusted Root once again OUT performed themselves the last time I shot them. Having just seen them back in early April at Jergal’s Rhythm House in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh, I had an idea what tonight’s show was going to be like. But boy was I wrong. Tonight’s show at Pittsburgh Station Square was truly a completely different show. The setlist was different, the atmosphere was different and the melodies that tie their songs from one to the other were different too. I can never keep count, but tonight Root’s Liz Berlin played like 309 different instruments. Sometimes two or three at the same time. Her ability to do this amazes me more and more each show I see Rusted Root. Vocals are not up for discussion. Her vocals are tops amongst female vocalists. She is like a chameleon. She can sing and harmonize with anyone doing anything.

Michael and his bands mates hit the stage exactly at 9 pm to a huge crowd outside in the steady rain at Pittsburgh’s Station Square.  The rain held off till the band decided to hit the stage and then it baptized everyone there from start to finish. The opening song ironically was Rain. An incredible song and one that truly set the tone for the damp night. It however in no way made the crowd even think about heading for shelter. I think it may have been a sign for more onlookers to come join the Root Party just starting. The transition from Rain into VooDoo was great and unexpected. I never expected VooDoo early in the show but it was a nice change. Man, Not Machine followed and was as always powerful. The lyrics and music give me chills every time.  And like I said earlier, at this point Liz Berlin had used around 15 instruments to add to the already great melodies of the show. In reality, Liz had only used about 4 so far, but you get my point. She can do anything on a stage. And then some.

Glabicki and his bandmates blew through their set list keeping up with the increasing crowd size and continuing rain.  Glabicki’s vocals were unbelievably strong tonight. Rested strong. No strain or crackling at all. This would be the first show for Rusted Root on their latest mini-tour taking them through August.  Heading into the end of the show and subsequent three encores, Root played one of the band’s anthems and crowd favs X T C. In the ending part of the song following the last chorus, Mike’s vocals sounding like a steam engine coming back into the station at Pittsburgh’s Station Square. He left zero notes on the stage so to say closing out the set. X T C was a great ending for the show and really set up what would be a great three song encore. Before X T C, Root ran through more crowd favorites such a Monkey Pants and David Bowie’s Rebel, Rebel, a Root regular lately on their set list history.

Glabicki came out for a solo moment to kick off their encores that transitioned into Scattered which showed just how truly gifted Glabicki is on this guitar. Fast and so smooth. So very rhythmic and soulful. The rest of his band mates joined Glabicki for another crowd favorite; Send Me On My Way, a song that put Rusted Root on the map both nationally and internationally back in the early 1990’s. Glabicki fed off the crowd’s energy for the song and vice versa for the crowd off Glabicki. Berlin’s vocals were awesome too on Send Me. The other highlight of the song was guitarist Dirk Miler providing the flute end and obviously very important part of the band’s anthem. A really great way to wind down for the night. Closing out the night, was the powerful Back To The Earth. What can you say? Yet another feather in the band’s cap and for me the third or fourth exclamation mark for tonight’s concert.

The show tonight was as always great. I enjoy getting out to shoot Rusted Root and talk to Mike however short or long it may be.  The band sounds like they have some more new material to play and possibly release down the road. Two possibilities that any Root faithful should be happy to hear. Root plays June 30th in Portage County Ohio and in Sherman New York to kick off July.  The band will play the Red Rock’s in Colorado for the 4th of July. That’s a show I would not want to miss.

Swedish Metallers AMARANTHE Coming to Rock Rex Theater on 3/4

AMARANTHE:

3/4: Pittsburgh, PA @ Rex Theater

On tour with Failure Anthem, Cypher 16, and Smash Into Pieces

Elize Ryd – Vocals
Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson – Screams
Olof Mörck – Guitar, Keys
Johan Andreassen – Bass
Morten Løwe Sørensen – Drums

Formed as a project in 2007 by guitarist Olof Mörck and vocalist Jake E., Gothenburg, Sweden’s AMARANTHE have carved their name into the annals of metal in capital letters. Band with an exceptional vision right from the outset, Amaranthe are an institution; trailblazers of a genre they almost single-handedly forged.

According to some sources “melodic death metal” and somewhere else pegged as “metalcore” Amaranthe keeps driving genre purists loopy. Sporting three singers, each with characteristics of their own, Amaranthe constantly defies pigeonholing and sound like no one – and nothing – else. Morten Løwe Sørensen’s rhythmic thrust and Johan Andreassen’s booming low-frequency assault lay the foundation to Olof Mörck’s surgically precise, almost machine-like guitar riffing and layers of lush, contemporary keyboards. Timeless, glistening pop choruses coated with an icing of three layers of sublime singing from Elize Ryd’s emotive, angelic voice, Jake E.’s forceful delivery and Henrik Englund Wilhelmsson’s screams combine for a mix of edgy, powerful melodic music that is not only unique and unforgettable, it’s trend-setting and inimitable as well. Amaranthe has already proved they’re the next step in the evolution of metal. Sadly, Jake E. has recently left the band to pursue other projects (http://teamrock.com/news/2016-11-09/amaranthe-vocalist-jake-e-quits-band).

amaranthe_picAfter seeing major labels chomping at the bit that was their one song Myspace demo in 2008, in April 2011 their eponymous debut album was released via the prestigious metal hotbed Spinefarm Records to worldwide acclaim, charting high in Sweden and Finland. Right off the bat throbbing to the pulse of the digital music revolution, “Amaranthe” was the 84th most played album on Spotify in the whole world, counting all genres. After a completed run of 92 live shows after the release of their eponymous debut, the sextet returned to Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark where the Amaranthe magic has been plucked from the air since the days of the debut album.

March 2013 saw the release of “The Nexus” where everything was upped a notch. Featured was more of the band’s innovative mix of melodic pop, harsh screamo metal, and techno-influenced hard rock. Extensive touring followed, more chart entries garnered (Top 10 entries both in Sweden and Finland, #12 on US Billboard Heatseeker chart etc.).

Now their career on an ever-upward trajectory, October 2014 saw the release of Amaranthe’s 3rd outing MASSIVE ADDICTIVE. Third time seemed to be the charm, as the album immediately charted in six countries, even manning the pole position on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. The album also yielded Amaranthe’s first major single hit with “Drop Dead Cynical”, which stayed several weeks at the top of USA‘s premier rock station, Sirius XM Octane, and had massive airplay all around the world.

With their 4th album now nigh, the secrets and evolution of the sound yet remain behind a veil, but now it almost goes without saying that connoisseurs of shiny modern metal have much more to look forward to from this unstoppable hybrid metal record-breaking machine!

Followers and copycats come and go, but Amaranthe remains the leader of the pack.

Concise stats of what is Amaranthe:

• 3 album released with a total sale of over 250 000 items worldwide
• 3 gold discs in Sweden for 20 000 cd-singles each
• 2 gold discs in Finland for 10 000 albums
• 1 gold disc in Finland for 5000 singles
• 4 carried out European tours and 3 US tours in 4 years. The 3 last tours as headline in both US and Europe
• 100 000 000 (ONE HUNDRED MILLION) plays at Spotify and over 40 000 000 on YouTube
• Headline at Liseberg in hometown Gothenburg with over 10 000 visitors
• Last album, “Massive Addictive” reached #1 on the US Billboard Heatseekers list
• 2 last albums both reached Top 10 status on the Swedish and Finnish album charts
• The first single from “Massive Addictive” album – “Drop Dead Cynical” – is played frequently on the biggest sporting events in the US, such as NHL games, etc.
• The same single – “Drop Dead Cynical” – spent several weeks at #1 on the US’s biggest rock radio station SiriusXM Octane
• All the singles released have been frequently played on Bandit Rock in Sweden. These have a total play quota of several thousand times
• During the band’s recent appearance at the Sweden Rock it was several thousand more spectators than the specified capacity of about 6000

REVIEW: MOTIONLESS IN WHITE @STAGE AE PITTSBURGH FEB 2017

The goth/metalcore unit, Motionless In White, out of Scranton, PA has surpassed a decade of popularising their brand of music, mixing screamo and clean vocals.  With all the bands that come and go from the Warped Tour genre this is no easy feat.  Their ability to pull in a female audience has much to do with that, appealing to a wide range of melodious metal enthusiasts. MIW is due to release a new album, Graveyard Shift (on Roadrunner Records), in May, recently putting out their single, “Eternally Yours” and currently touring with the likes of Issues and Falling In Reverse.  The band has gone through some personnel changes over the years, but the constant presence of lead singer Chris Cerulli remains steady.  For the most part, the lineup Wednesday night in Pittsburgh was the tight group that has been slugging it out on the road since 2012.

With a jack-o-lantern spotted, candle filled, graveyard type setting MIW launched in quickly with “570”, a spectacular opener due to the intensity, and followed it up with “A-M-E-R-I-C-A” (off of Infamous) accompanied by guest vocals from Michael Vampire of Dead Girls Academy, who opened earlier in the evening.  As they went into “Everyone Sells Cocaine” their influences ranging from Nu-metal/industrial to New Wave to mainstream metal were readily apparent.  Their rabid fans sang every word and security guards quickly had their hands full as the crowd surfing went full throttle.  Of all the bands that performed it seemed that the energy level peaked with MIW.  As Chris ‘Motionless’ worked the crowd, Devin ‘Ghost’ hammered his bass and let his red dyed flocks fly in abandon, Ricky ‘Horror’ Olson showed his tremendous prowess as a rhythym guitar player, Ryan Sitkowski stoically synched perfectly with Olson as he shred lead guitar, and newest member of the band Vinny Mauro on drums held down the low end.  “Abigail”, “Undead Ahead”, “Death March” and “Devil’s Night” came in quick sucession.

Having witnessed MIW numerous times, it became readily apparent that they have matured not only in their sound, but their stage presence as well.  The theatrics are still there via a dancing pumpkin head and a woman who throws out candy and shoots squirt guns, but the reliance on makeup and cliches from their genre has waned drastically.  The latest release “Eternally Yours” certainly has the signature MIW sound of aggressive and light flip flops, but the vocals have progressed as well as the guitar and synth presence.

The highlight of the show though may have been their cover of System Of A Down‘s “Chop Suey”.  With Devin and Ricky trading instruments, Chris did an amazing job impersonating Tankian (admittedly he’s no Tongo), and Devin handled the hush backing vocals of  Malakian.  The crowd went berserk and frankly, this one needs to be committed to wax because it is that well done. Check out a sample here:

Motionless finished off their set with “Dead As Fuck”, “Eternally Yours” and “Reincarnate”.

Motionless In White continue to prove themselves as not only a ‘stage’ entertaining band, but a band that is evolving musically without losing their identity and fan base.  The new release on May 5 should be interesting to say the least.

For nearly three decades, the name Crowbar has been synonymous with HEAVY. Since rising ominously from the swamplands of New Orleans in 1990, they’ve been hailed internationally as one of the world’s foremost purveyors of crushing, melodic sludge. The Serpent Only Lies, is both an affirmation of the band’s staying power and a nod to their legacy. “To me, it’s a fresh-sounding version of old-school Crowbar,” says Windstein.

“I intentionally went back and listened to a lot of old Crowbar stuff, like the self-titled and Broken Glass albums, to get a feel for what my mindset was 20-plus years ago. I also went back and listened to the bands that influenced Crowbar in the beginning, like Trouble, Saint Vitus, Melvins, and the first Type O Negative record. So it was kinda me doing my homework.”

The result is an album that stands toe-to-toe with those early Crowbar classics while maintaining the lumbering hooks of mid-period standouts like 1998’s Odd Fellows Rest and 2000’s Equilibrium. “Even lyrically, the approach was a little more old-school,” Windstein offers. “Some of the songs have less lyrics to let the riffs breathe a little more, which I had kind of gotten away from over the years. It was a conscious thing to go back to that.”

The tour cycle for The Serpent Only Lies marks the return of original Crowbar bassist Todd “Sexy T” Strange, who left the band back in 1999 but now joins Windstein, drummer Tommy Buckley and guitarist Matt Brunson in forging Crowbar’s future.  “Todd helped start the band, so having him back is important to me and, I think, the fans,” Windstein offers. “It’s a great feeling to be standing onstage next to him. It’s a breath of fresh air for the band and makes us stronger.”

“Having this be our eleventh record, we’re very fortunate because so many bands don’t last this long,”Windstein adds. “My whole outlook on music as a career is the Motörhead outlook, which is that slow and steady wins the race. If you continue to put out killer records, continue to kick ass onstage every night and continue to treat your fans with respect, that’s the stuff people will remember.”
