Folk-Rock Band Whiskerman Coming to Pittsburgh August 7th at @ClubCafé

Oakland, California rockers Whiskerman mysterious folk-rock has evolved over the years to reveal a unique sound that they’ll be taking on tour this summer.

A west coast favorite and up-and-coming national act, Whiskerman is a five-piece band led by prolific singer-songwriter Graham Patzner. Their eclectic sound brings together classical instrumentation and modern rock and roll. Alongside Patzner are Charles Lloyd (guitar, sitar), Will Lawrence (bass), Trevor Bahnson (guitar), and Dan Schwartz (drums).

Previously, in the spring, Whiskerman completed a successful west coast tour, and kicked off the festival season with an exhilarating set at the Joshua Tree Music Festival. Since 2011, the band has also released four records, each revealing a unique aspect of the band’s eclectic sound.

The band teamed up with veteran producer Jeff Saltzman (The KillersBlondie) on their record Nomad, an album that Performer Magazine described as “bursting with familiarity and momentum that rejuvenates the classic rock genre with lush strings, guitar-based soundscapes, and expressive lyricism.” A few years before that, they’d transformed their sound with a soul-powered EP Bad News, guided by veteran producer Tony Berg, with engineering by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Jesca Hoop).

Their latest release Champions—an ambitious double album that leads its listeners on a soulful journey, both dark and joyous—has been extremely well received, both in its recording and live performance. Their show is something you won’t want to miss.

“You can’t help but be sold on their sound” -New Noise Magazine

“Oakland’s Whiskerman have been rolling around the Bay Area for long enough to pick up a little bit of everything that’s happening in that scene: ecstatic psychedelia, sturdily constructed pop-rock, pick-and-grin folk.”  –Flood Magazine

“… Unlikely Candidates bring poppy adult alternative that you’ll love if you’re a fan of bands like Imagine Dragons or Grouplove.” – NBC San Diego

“…the Unlikely Candidates was the biggest surprise at last year’s City of Trees shindig at Bonney Field, peddling some ultra sharp, melodically blistering alt-pop rock with just the right amount of roughness around the edges.” – The Sacramento Bee

“…soaring, sing-along-ready earworms with sky-high ambitions. It’s indie rock made for stadium-sized crowds… moving from the Mumford-esque acoustic anthem ‘Just Breathe’ to the electro-pop of ‘Ringer.’” – Aspen Times

“…this new direction finds the band successfully becoming everything Panic! at the Disco tries so hard to be.” – Central Track

“’Ringer’ could be the most fun alternative rock song of the year…The Unlikely Candidates should be household names right now, the band’s always been that good. With their new EP, they get to prove it. Here’s hoping that in 2017 they earn the rep they deserve.” – Alternative Addiction 4.5/5 Star Review

SIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE IS SCORCHING INTO A NEW DAWN

BURNING THE THRESHOLD OUT FEBRUARY 24TH 2017

In preparing for the first album of non-Hexadic Six Organs of Admittance music since 2012’s Ascent, Ben Chasny had a think about what he’d be saying in his own tongue for the first time in a half-decade. As ever, a head-full of ideas were driving him to think and speak music as a spirituality superimposed onto a reality, with the ghosts of both whispering at each other. In the end, what sits in our listening ears is the sound of communion. Burning the Threshold brings a wealth of Six Organs-styled lightness into one of his sweetest musical meditations yet.

With a spacious acoustic sound stage, Burning the Threshold may actually more resemble 2011’s Asleep on the Floodplain or 2005’s School Of The Flower. All of this is speculative, comparative, unverifiable – but our sense of what is true tells us that nobody plays acoustic music quite like Six Organs of Admittance, and that furthermore, nothing sounds so much like Burning the Threshold as Burning the Threshold.

Ben is in a particularly expansive mood this time around, singing and playing with all the thoughts affixed to a quiver of potent melodies launching forth and arcing out through dimensions, seeking infinite space. This space radiates out from the album’s first single, “Taken By Ascent”, a seven minute plus burner that engulfs the surrounding realm with empathetic waves. Featuring the thrilling vocal accompaniment of Haley Fohr, the massive drumming of Chris Corsano, and flourishing keys of Cooper Crain, “Taken By Ascent” exemplifies Six Organs of Admittance‘s furvid push into new and thrilling territory with Burning the Threshold.

With this new music, Ben Chasny has created a potent tonic for our times. Looking at the world through clear eyes beneath a knitted brow, but with a laugh rising up from its heart, Burning the Threshold brings us a powerful draught of essence. Listen to “Taken By Ascent” on NPR’s Songs We Love  below and mark your calendars for 2017 in anticipation of Six Organs’ special release show in London and the massive US tour that follows!

For nearly three decades, the name Crowbar has been synonymous with HEAVY. Since rising ominously from the swamplands of New Orleans in 1990, they’ve been hailed internationally as one of the world’s foremost purveyors of crushing, melodic sludge. The Serpent Only Lies, is both an affirmation of the band’s staying power and a nod to their legacy. “To me, it’s a fresh-sounding version of old-school Crowbar,” says Windstein.

“I intentionally went back and listened to a lot of old Crowbar stuff, like the self-titled and Broken Glass albums, to get a feel for what my mindset was 20-plus years ago. I also went back and listened to the bands that influenced Crowbar in the beginning, like Trouble, Saint Vitus, Melvins, and the first Type O Negative record. So it was kinda me doing my homework.”

The result is an album that stands toe-to-toe with those early Crowbar classics while maintaining the lumbering hooks of mid-period standouts like 1998’s Odd Fellows Rest and 2000’s Equilibrium. “Even lyrically, the approach was a little more old-school,” Windstein offers. “Some of the songs have less lyrics to let the riffs breathe a little more, which I had kind of gotten away from over the years. It was a conscious thing to go back to that.”

The tour cycle for The Serpent Only Lies marks the return of original Crowbar bassist Todd “Sexy T” Strange, who left the band back in 1999 but now joins Windstein, drummer Tommy Buckley and guitarist Matt Brunson in forging Crowbar’s future.  “Todd helped start the band, so having him back is important to me and, I think, the fans,” Windstein offers. “It’s a great feeling to be standing onstage next to him. It’s a breath of fresh air for the band and makes us stronger.”

“Having this be our eleventh record, we’re very fortunate because so many bands don’t last this long,”Windstein adds. “My whole outlook on music as a career is the Motörhead outlook, which is that slow and steady wins the race. If you continue to put out killer records, continue to kick ass onstage every night and continue to treat your fans with respect, that’s the stuff people will remember.”

Michael Kelly Guitar Co. Unveils Custom Collection 50 Deluxe Model with 12 Sonic Options

Why settle for just any tone when you can choose among 12? That’s the opportunity that Michael Kelly Guitar Co. presents with the new Custom Collection 50 Deluxe (CC50DLX) electric guitar model. The perfect tone is just a click, pull or push away with a 4-way switch that drastically expands sonic options. Combining cutting-edge electronics with the classic look of Michael Kelly’s 1950s Series, the versatile CC50 Deluxe is designed at the intersection of modern and vintage, embodying the best of both worlds.

The design of the CC50 Deluxe began as an extended collaboration between the Michael Kelly team and the sonic experts at Seymour Duncan. At the center of this model are Duncan’s Hot Rail pickups. These humbucking pickups have the ability to switch to a more traditional single-coil tone, enabling the player to enjoy a fat, heavy rock tone one moment before transitioning to a traditional, surf-style tone the next. These are combined with Michael Kelly’s new 12-Tone Mod to open up the full sonic palette.

One key to the 12-Tone Mod on the Deluxe is the use of a 4-way switch instead of the typical 3-way switch. The 4-way blade switch delivers the typical neck, bridge or both settings of a 3-way, while adding a fourth position as a “series” option. Two push-pull pots on the master volume and master tone knob help expand the tonal variations. One splits the neck pickup from humbucker to single coil when pulled up; the other splits the bridge pickup. The pickups can be positioned 12 different ways for unique sonic settings. To see a diagram of the different options, visit the CC50 Deluxe product page by clicking here.

The CC50 Deluxe doesn’t forsake beauty for brains. An exotic striped ebony finish tops the maple-bound alder body. The bolt-on maple neck has a rosewood fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets and dot inlays. A dual-action truss rod stabilizes the Modern C neck profile, while a vintage bridge with brass saddles, die-cast tuning keys and chrome hardware finishes round out the classic esthetic. The model shares many of the same dimensions as other Michael Kelly 1950s Series guitars, including the 10.5’’ fretboard, 25.5’’ scale length, and a standard bone nut at 43mm width.

Offering brains, beauty, and excellent value, the CC50 Deluxe is priced at$1,100.00 MSRP, and a $699.99 introductory special price. For a closer look at this model and the rest of the 1950s series, visit www.MichaelKellyGuitars.com.

Real Guitars Made from Real Skateboards

Real Guitars Made from Real Skateboards

From Skate Park to Studio: Prisma Guitars Makes Musical Dreams a Reality

SAN FRANCISCO —What started as a love for two hobbies is evolving into a passion for one business. Today, Prisma Guitars is driven by the goal of building custom guitars with a one-of-a-kind style where instruments are all 100% handcrafted from the wood of recycled skateboard decks and custom engineered for the highest quality sound.

Prisma offers musicians the opportunity to customize every feature in building their dream guitar, from body shapes and pickups to necks, bridges, and knobs. Prisma electric guitars have six body shapes that can be built entirely with skateboards, a skateboard top and mahogany or alder back, or with a hollow body. In addition to using their own stock of skateboards, Prisma is able to build a guitar with a customer’s skateboards at no extra charge.

Necks are available in multiple profiles in four styles: skateboard, mahogany or maple with rosewood fingerboard, or one-piece maple. Each neck has a 12’’ inch radius and 25.5’’ scale length with a hand-shaped Graph Tech nut at 1 5/8’’ width. Prisma uses only hand-wound pickups from McNelly Pickups and David Allen Pickups, and all guitars are built exclusively with Emerson Custom electronics. Tone Pro or Mastery bridges are available, and an Allen key Hot Rod truss rod anchors the body, which has a 100% nitrocellulose instrument lacquer finish.

Prisma also builds custom bass guitars in two body styles with three wood options: mahogany back with skate top, alder back with skate top, or full skateboard. A maple neck with rosewood or maple fingerboard is available along with three finish types and several other customizable features.

Pricing for custom guitars begins at $2,500 and orders take approximately eight to twelve weeks to complete. Left-handed models are available at no extra cost, and all instruments come with a travel-ready MONO bag. Guitars can be shipped internationally.

Tapping into local SF culture, Prisma also offers pre-built series guitars with select customizable features. The Sunset Series pays homage to Prisma’s Sunset District neighborhood, home to Ocean Beach, where surfing and skateboarding are a way of life. Each guitar in this series is a vibrant pastel that is meant to represent a house in the neighborhood. Loaded with McNelly x Prisma pickups, the series features handmade skateboard knobs and a custom Decoboom pickguard inspired by 1970s surf culture.

“Skateboards are made with seven layers of hard rock maple— a familiar guitar wood— and some of the layers are randomly dyed colors. Through working the materials, we get the colors to come through,” says Nick Pourfard, founder of Prisma Guitars. “Every single time I build one, it’s a different result. I never make the same guitar twice.”

For a behind-the-scenes look at the Prisma design process, check out this video that features a demo by professional skateboarder and musician Tommy Guerrero. To learn more about custom Prisma Guitars, visit www.PrismaGuitars.com.

About Prisma Guitars

Prisma Guitars was founded in 2015 by 24-year-old Nick Pourfard, a self-taught woodworker and industrial design student based in San Francisco. Inspired by his love of skateboarding and music, Nick decided to combine the two to create colorful guitars using broken and used skateboard decks. He has created custom guitars for stylistically diverse musicians at home and abroad, including international icon Steve Harris of the band Iron Maiden. Prisma Guitars are all 100% handmade in the USA, and the colors are completely one-of-a-kind for every build. To learn more, visitwww.PrismaGuitars.com.
