ABSU Announces Continuation Of North American Tour/11/08 @31st Street Pub Pittsburgh

ABSU today announce details on their upcoming tour, titled North American Connexus Continuation. The ten-city tour will see the band perform a complete set with music spanning throughout their twenty-two year recording career. This excursion is a follow-up mini-tour by the Texas-based mythological occult metal trio since the release of Abzu – the second of a planned trilogy of recordings.

Vocalist/drummer Proscriptor shares, “Since the release of our latest recording, Abzu, the response has been extremely vehement and now is the perfect moment to continue spreading the album’s essence throughout unchartered regions the band did not perform in earlier this year. We purposely waited until the timing was ideal to embark on this additional journey, as we shall continue contaminating the communities with our craft of Mythological Occult Metal.”

Proscriptor also adds, “We have begun the composition/arrangement process for the next album, suitably titled Apsu, which is the Sumerian-Akkadian spelling of the band moniker. We shall wait until the new album is released before we present any of the new material in a live atmosphere.”

Abzu, the band’s seventh studio album, was released October 2011. The album was recorded/mixed by J.T. Longoria (King Diamond/Solitude Aeternus) and features original works by Polish artist Zbigniew Bielak (Ghost, Watain, Entombed, Behemoth, Destroyer 666, Vader, Etc.) Proscriptor commented, “With this record, we appended dirtier elements of psychedelia and fusion. Lyrically, it descends deeper into Enki’s lower world as well the Thelemic Magic(k) System.” He added, “This album is not a ‘natural progression’ from previous releases, but a feat of metaphysical conquest and murkiness.”

ABSU came to prominence with the release of their 1993 debut, Barathrum: V.I.T.R.I.O.L.  Each album saw continual expansion of the band’s now highly regarded artistic vision and international fanbase. It was with 2001’s Tara that the band truly arrived.  The album reached top lists of countless magazines worldwide. Years, however, would pass before any new material would be recorded. In late 2007, the band finally announced their re-awakening. Now teamed with London-based Candlelight Records, the band would take nearly sixteen months writing/recording their sixth album. Absu, featuring contributions from members of King Diamond, Mayhem, Melechesh, Firstborn and Enthroned, was released early 2009.

“An energizing sprint through black metal, bedrock thrash, symphonic flourishes, and arcane mythological references… layers of density define the record– in sonics, in lyrics, in the completely triumphant, surprisingly melodic manner in which it merges the two. Perfect and immense.” – Pitchfork

“A lightning storm of industrial shred and kick-drum retribution spews fire atop Necromancer vox and shattered glass arrangements.” – Austin Chronicle

“Keyboards and guitars swell and recede with purpose. Thrash riffs fire cleanly in tandem with Proscriptor McGovern’s battery. It smells of click track, but he is still the best drummer in black metal, bar Frost. Absu has brought the Necronomicon into the age of Kindle. Say hello to the 21st century.” – Invisible Oranges

“Should you buy this album? Absu-fucking-lutely!” – MetalSucks

The Highballers @ 31st St. Pub Sat-May 25

The guys from the Highballers dropped us line to let us know they would be in town in a few weeks on Saturday May 25th at The 31st Pub:

The Highballers (Americana/Alt Country, Washington, DC), features former lead guitarist of The Frampton Brothers and Teen Riot Sean Lally (from Pittsburgh), and are headlining at the 31st Street Pub Saturday, May 25 with Bessemer (from the U.K.) and Tex Railer’s Doomtown. This is their second time playing Pittsburgh since last July.  The Highballers will be touring their new record through the summer.

Notable news about Sean, who is a central part of the band and a major driving force (his silver sparkle telecaster is used in their logo):  He recently suffered a serious hand, arm and shoulder injury after a motorbike crash.  His shoulder was literally screwed together and he is still recovering and undergoing painful physical therapy.  He is working to be in condition for touring.

Soft Music and Hard Liquor was released in January, 2013 and produced by Don Zientara who has worked with Washington, D.C. bands such as Minor Threat, The Bad Brains, Fugazi, Black Flag and many others.

There’s something to be said for fate in the music world. One moment you’re left with the skeleton of a band, unsure when you’ll be able to follow your calling again, the next you’ve got a whole new line-up, a brand new home, a stronger, more defined sound and are recording with some of the biggest names in the industry. This is the tale of The Rabid Whole.

Disenchanted with playing in bands whose music was unchallenging and run of the mill, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Andreas Weiss set out to remedy his predicament. Purchasing an arsenal of music and noise-making gadgets, he began writing songs for his own band’s 2009 debut album, Autramaton.

Recruiting musicians along the way, the first incarnation of The Rabid Whole was solidified, releasing their first album and touring Canada, sharing the stage with the likes of The Birthday Massacre, Econoline Crush, Hinder, Apoptygma Berzerk, and 16Volt.

But that’s when things began to take a turn. Following the departure of several band members, Weiss decided to leave his hometown of Regina, SK behind, taking a leap of faith and moving to Toronto, ON along with guitarist and founding member George Radutu.

Through some lucky online ads, he discovered drummer JJ Tartaglia and bass guitarist Oscar Anesetti while a Christmas trip back home to Regina put him face-to-face with Chalsey Noelle, a friend of a friend looking for a new career path after quitting her job. Wouldn’t you know it – Noelle was a talented keyboardist and vocalist.

Now, the new and improved Rabid Whole has released their second album, ‘Refuge’. A direct reflection of the emotional and external changes of Weiss’ journey, the album deals with relatable themes.

“I sold my house, quit my engineering consultant job and moved…We were starting from square one again, but with more uncertainties than ever and weren’t sure when we would even have a full band again. Part of the writing had begun randomly scattered over the past couple of years, but the majority came right after the move. I set up the studio in the basement of my house and got to work. I didn’t leave the house for two months and wrote from the moment I’d wake up until I’d fall asleep,” says Weiss.

Recorded and produced by Karl Schubach (Misery Signals, Solace), mixed by Dave Ogilvie (Jakalope, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson) and mastered by Noah Mintz (Broken Social Scene, Death From Above 1979), the finished product delivers rock and electronic elements pushed to the max, a male and female vocal showdown and, as Weiss puts it, showcases “a 21st century, high-energy, electro alternative, orgasmic-punch-in-the-face-rock band.”

Isn’t it time you fell down the rabid whole?

TWIN GUNS – Saturday, March 23 – 9:00PM @ 31st Street Pub

Twin Guns Sweet Dreams_5

The powerhouse duo of Andrea Sicco and “Jungle” Jim Chandler give the full blown sound out of a two person front that is reminiscent of the Black Keys, but with a unique sound core that defies any one genre of rock n’ roll. On tour for their late 2012 album Sweet Dreams, listen for a wild, but not chaotic, mix of surf, grunge, metal, death metal, electronica, rockabilly, and 50s-60s doo-wop aspects… all tied up in neatly choreographed feats of musical composition.

Twin Guns satisfy like a Wild West Neo-Black Sabbath that rides in from the sunset instead of disappearing into it.

With King Fez, and Retro Agents. Doors at 9:00PM.

Michale Graves returns to Pittsburgh on September 25th

Former Misfits frontman, Michale Graves, returns to Pittsburgh on September 25th for an all acoustic show at the 31st St. Pub. Michale will strum his way through his favorite solo and Misfits material. Opening acts include The Sablowskis and The Homeless Gospel Choir. This over 21 show starts at 9pm. $10 admission.

“There’s no skull makeup, no skeleton jacket, no bony trousers, in fact Graves has removed all the eponymous “Illusions” from his past life and instead gives us the bare bones of one man and one guitar captivating people. And captivate he certainly does. Graves has always been an accomplished songwriter, it’s no secret that he was the main writing force for the Misfits albums he recorded, (namely “American Psycho” and “Famous Monsters,”) and the acoustic tracks selected for this album are nothing short of magical.”
— Dónal McBrien, Metal Ireland

Michale Graves blasted onto the music scene in 1995 as the lead singer of one of the most legendary punk rock bands of all time, The Misfits. The band soon kicked off an explosive tour of Europe and the United States dubbed “Resurrection”. Soon after Michale and the band signed a recording contract with Geffen Records through the same A&R representative who signed Metallica and White Zombie. American Psycho was the first Misfits release in almost twenty years. Michale composed a majortiy of the songs on the album including both singles. The Misfits then embarked on a grueling world tour with one of the biggest heavy metal acts on the planet, Megadeth….
