Jacob Luhrs Founder/Head of HeartSupport  Email: jake@heartsupport.com I was raised in a non-Christian family, and this is my story of how God found me. My parents divorced when I was at a very young age. My father moved to Virginia where his parents lived, and my mother, sister and I staying in South Carolina. We moved from our beautiful home in Greenville, SC to the government aid housing in the same area. We lived there for a year and a half, then settled in Columbia, SC where I grew up most of my life. Transitioning from government aid housing into a location with great schooling and a different lifestyle all around was difficult for me. Because I didn’t have many friends and was struggling to find a place, I held onto my sister for dear life to have someone to connect with. Both of my parents at this time remarried and I lived with my mother, sister, and now my step father. Having step parents is a very difficult thing to understand and deal with at such a young age. Now however I understand much more and love both of them dearly. Moving from the “ghetto” to a neighborhood in Columbia caused me to grew through the ghetto lifestyle and into the punk rock scene. By going to shows at the age of 16 I had my first encounter with what I believe to be my first true “desire.” To be in a band, and play music, to express my pain, angst, and love through music alone. I started my first band with some friends called “Smash Adams.” Practicing in my mothers house above the garage and playing small shows around town, VFW halls, and at our high school. I then moved onto a band called “Last To Know”, playing with them brought more experience, but the band that really set me in my ways and pursuit was “She Walks In Beauty.” At this time I was about 18 or 19 years old. It was your typical metalcore band yet reaching heights in our local scene and playing shows outside of my state made me believe it was just the beginning, or so I thought. I would work two jobs during the summers so that I could afford merch to sell at my sell at our shows. My Popa gave me a check to record our first demo. I was truly seeing my dream come true. I was making a name for myself and doing what I always wanted. Unfortunately, I also dove head first into drinking, partying, lustful acts and experimenting with certain drugs. I ended up moving out of my mothers house and into a house with 4 dogs and 3 roommates. My room was the size of a closet! I went to a technical college but dropped out using the excuse that “it took up too much of my time.” I sold my Nissan Maxima for a cargo van so I could actually have a “touring” vehicle for out of state shows. I decided later on to take two classes at the technical college, one being Introduction into Audio Engineering and the other in Music Business. During that time, my band fell apart at the seams. Some of my guys wouldn’t even show up for practice; one quit and the other one would always show up drunk. I saw my dreams and passions falling apart, thus making me extremely depressed. I started going to the practice sheds on a nightly basis, watching other bands practice while I drowned my sorrows in any bottle of alcohol I could get my hands on. At this time I was living with my friends and working for a handyman, waking up between 4-5 a.m. to work until 5 p.m. four days a week. I’d come home to more drinking and partying. I hit a dead end in my life. I was sleeping around with girls and dipping my hands in drugs occasionally. I also had a close family member who struggled with heroin at the time, and that alone was a huge trial and brought me much pain. I have personally never dealt with heroin or cocaine, but seeing it first hand and how it was affecting my family member was a huge issue in my life. By the age of 19, I was struggling with so many things. Not being loved by my family, lost in drugs, alcohol and girls. I had no where to go and no one to reach out to. I started to feel worthless and hollow. I began to think of committing suicide. I thought of leaving all of this crap behind. At the time, I figured where ever I was going to go had to be better than the place I was in! I remember sitting in my seat in class with my head down crying in despair, and asking God WHY! Then the day came that completely changed my life. I was working on a house with my boss one morning and decided to go outside for a cigarette. I talked to the Lord and told him “God, if you are real, if your son Jesus Christ is truly real, then show me! I don’t want my life, and if you want it you can have it, but if not then I’m going to kill myself…” I instantly felt an enormous flow of love in my soul. I couldn’t stop smiling! I was still in the same place, with the same struggles, working at LOVED! I was no longer ALONE! I felt someone cared! That someone was God! I then took on a whole new life that God had given me. He was there to help me, to show me the way, to bring understanding to this mess I had called life. I was the happiest man on earth that day. I truly didn’t have to kill myself or live like this any longer. God was there to show me the way out and to live a filled life! That night I started to pray to him and think of ways I could work on who I was and where I was. I started reading the bible and looking at myself in a whole new light. A few months later I got the opportunity to be a member of an amazing metal band called August Burns Red, which I have been a member of for more than 4 and 1/2 years! I tour the world and consistently build my life with Christ as my cornerstone. Recently God has put on my heart to reach out to other people and to tell them of God’s love for us! It is an honor for me to do so, thus I decided to start YourLife Ministries. I appreciate your time and reading my testimony. Two weeks ago AUGUST BURNS RED let the world in on a first taste of their fifth full-length album, Rescue & Restore, via a lyric video for scorching track “Fault Line.” The song stoked the fires of ABR’s rabid fanbase by receiving more than 130,000 plays in the first 24 hours and having since soared to more than 370,000 plays.

Today, the band is releasing the new track “Spirit Breaker.” In addition, ABR is also unveiling a free digital sampler of some of the band’s favorite tracks from their acclaimed previous releases. “When picking songs to preview the album we wanted to share a variety of different songs as this album is pretty diverse,” explains guitarist JB Brubaker. “‘Spirit Breaker’ is one of the more melodic songs on Rescue & Restore and features one of my favorite clean sections on the album. It’s not as heavy as the majority of the album but we feel like it still hits hard and has the potential to be a great live song.”

Hand-picked by the band, the songs on the sampler provide a condensed version of AUGUST BURNS RED’s history to both longtime fans and recent converts, showcasing how the band’s sound has evolved as they have developed into one of the most respected acts in the genre.

“Just to give everyone a bit of insight on the concept behind the record — Zero, at its core, is a story of good and evil,” explains HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS drummer Eron Bucciarelli. “The setting is a dystopian future where a totalitarian corporation has risen to power in the wake of a disaster, “The Fires”.  Zero is an account of the events from the perspective of the main character in the story, “Baker”.  The album’s track listing is based upon those events.”

 

Eron continues, “The story takes place in 2017 — or so THEY would like you to believe. In reality, the year is 2015. The people know little, they’re angry, and they know something isn’t right; that they’ve been lied to! Life used to be so nice, they used to be kids – driving around with friends, listening to music – no cares in the world. And as bad as things would sometimes get back then, they are nothing in comparison to what the people are experiencing now. This is only the tip of the iceberg. To delve deeper into the story, you’ll have to delve deeper into Zero.

 

The album art for Zero was designed by Jeff Chenault at Eleven07 (www.eleven07.com), who also spearheaded the artdirection along with HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS vocalist/guitarist JT Woodruff.

The album, described by guitarist and principal songwriter JB Brubaker as the band’s “most ambitious album yet,” turns a critical eye to the oft-maligned genre of metalcore, leading by example to prove that bands can still find exciting new ways to expand the genre.
“Rescue & Restore is about challenging other bands and ourselves, as well as fans of this music, to want more than whatever happens to be the current buzz,” explains Brubaker. “We’ve done our best with each new album to try to push our sound in new directions and we’d like to see our peers do the same. People need to realize that there’s not much of a difference between a metalcore song that has a couple breakdowns with a repeating chorus and the latest Lady Gaga song. This genre used to be better than that. It can still be better than that.”
Throughout the album, AUGUST BURNS RED continue to do their part to challenge the conventions of heavy music. Over the course of 11 tracks, the band artfully blend piano, cello, violin, trumpet, various percussive elements and more into their sonic arsenal, taking their music into new aesthetic territory and contorting the boundaries of the genre.

“At the end of the day we are still a very heavy band,” he explains. “Rescue & Restore still has plenty of really heavy stuff, techy odd meter riffs, and all the stuff that people have come to expect from us, it just has a lot more surprises along the way.”

Consisting of Dan “Soupy” Campbell (lead singer), Casey Cavaliere (guitarist),Matt Brasch (guitarist), Nick Steinborn (keyboardist/guitarist), Joshua Martin(bassist), and Michael Kennedy (drummer)The Wonder Years are a band that started as something of a joke and grew to become recognized around the country, courtesy of a sloppy debut LP that flicked some sort of switch. Releasing TheUpsides in January 2010, a complete departure from The  Years’ early work, was just the beginning of an ongoing avalanche of momentum that has led the Philadelphia sextet to the forefront of the pop-punk community.

 

Engaging musicianship and intimate, instantly relatable lyricism made The Wonder Years a critical darling even before hordes of fans began to take notice. But it didn’t take long for everyone to jump on board. Signing to Hopeless Records with their brand of “realist pop-punk” and re-releasing The Upsides with bonus tracks brought about new buzz, and the release of the sprawling, 13-track concept record Suburbia I’ve Given You All and Now I’m Nothing in June of 2011 confirmed what many thought: The Wonder Years were for real.

 

Playing shows in basements, backyards and VFW halls the country over in its early years, the band had a DIY mentality long before it broke through to a larger audience. “The idea was that, for a long time, no one wanted to work with The Wonder Years so we said fuck it, we’ll do it ourselves,” Campbell says. “We didn’t need anyone else. We weren’t looking for charity. We were just going to cowboy up and fucking do it.”

 

The Wonder Years graced the cover of Alternative Press, played an entire summer on the Vans Warped Tour, and supportedNew Found Glory on the Pop Punk’s Not Dead Tour to close out 2011. They opened 2012 in a huge way, with the Glamour Kills Tour, which Campbell called the band’s “first big-boy headliner.” Leading Polar Bear ClubTransitThe Story So FarA Loss for Words, and Into It. Over It. across the country for six weeks of sold-out shows proved that The Wonder Years are still growing, still making new friends, and breaking new boundaries.

 

Now, with the bands new release, The Greatest Generationwe will get to see what The Wonder Years have in store for us in 2013. The 2013 VANS WARPED TOUR Announces ART OF SHOCK as the Official BBQ BAND

Every year, it has been tradition for Vans Warped Tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman to personally handpick an up-and-coming, 100% independent act to be the official BBQ Band for the tour. The BBQ Band is given a slot on the Ernie Ball stage each year in trade for serving up the delicious food consumed at each post-show BBQ. Many bands have made their start as a Vans Warped Tour BBQ Band, including Dropkick MurphysLongway and others.

This year, Hollywood, CA’s own ART OF SHOCK has been chosen for the prestigious honor. Vans Warped Tour founder and producer Kevin Lyman states, “I’m glad to have ART OF SHOCK out on the grill and on stage this year!”

The Sunset Strip favorites, known for their unique fusion of modern and classic rock influences, have been taking Los Angeles and Southern California by storm for the past few years with their over-the-top performances.
