NAMM: Furch Guitars showcases their Limited Edition Travel guitar for 2020

Furch Guitars, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of premium-quality acoustic guitars, presents their one-of-a-kind, solid-wood guitar “Little Jane” as a limited edition for 2020. This instrument stands-out by combining first-class material, precision craftsmanship and a unique assembly system that allows for quick and easy assembly in to a fully functioning instrument and then disassembly to a compact size which fits in a travel bag the size of a standard backpack. This guitar is always ready for an adventure.
The main assembly design feature is the robust latching mechanism made from high-quality stainless steel and aircraft-grade aluminum. This provides robust and reliable attachment of the removable neck to the guitar’s body. A special recess in the guitar’s side serves to protect the neck of the guitar during transport. This also enhances the enjoyment for the player by directing a surprisingly projecting sound towards the player’s ear. The uncompromising, compact transport size of the instrument is also achieved via removable headstock, which can be safely stored after disassembly in a special pocket in the travel bag. Further convenience is illustrated by a 45mm(1 3/4″)-wide fretboard and 55mm (2 3/16″) bridge string spacing, which do not correspond to travel guitar dimensions, but to those of full-size acoustics. For more information, please see the attached document. Those interested can view the guitar at NAMM 2020 at Furch Guitars booth 2307.

Guitarists: Finding the sound to fit your style

” So you want to be a rock ‘n’ roll star?
Well listen now, hear what I say
Just get an electric guitar
Take some time
And learn how to play
“- The Byrds

Admit it. You’ve daydreamed of being on that stage with a guitar slung low, rocking out. If you were anything like myself, you even used a tennis racket as a kid in front of that mirror blasting some Led Zep and thinking you could be Jimmy Page. Ah, and then reality sits in!

Re-watching the documentary It Might Get Loud and The Edge’s crazy soundscapes inspired this article in that The Edge was really not so different in his raw playing than Page or White, but it was his use of effects that made him stand apart, yet he is no less of a musician.  If you at least understand the basics, then you can progress to finding elements that give you the tone and sound of certain players.  While it may give you the sound though there is no ignoring that skill cannot be replaced by effects.  There is an old story of how Ted Nugent picked up Eddie Van Halen’s guitar and thought he would “sound” like Eddie and his ‘brown sound’.  Let’s just say it didn’t work in the least.  Your style is your style, but try to find the sound that fits your style and you may have a winning formula.

Let’s stick to the economic decisions for the purpose of this article then.  Pedals offer a myriad of different sounds to make your tone more like Hendrix or even more like Denver if that’s your goal.  The faves of electric axe players seem to be distortion, overdrive, fuzz, and wah to start with.  Each offers a learning curve and you want to do your research.  But, don’t just look up pedals on Google, your best bet is to go to a particular company with a great reputation like Aclam Guitars or the like.  Acoustic players should not ignore the ability to toy around as well, some of the best live acoustic performers I’ve witnessed these days like Howie Day and Ed Sheeran can command a crowd by themselves due to their use of pedals.  Check out a looper, delay, or drum machine to have some real fun and if you want to play live definitely invest in a chromatic tuner.  And if you are running multiple pedals and do not want to look like a chump then you certainly want to invest in a quality custom pedalboard.

But if pedals are elementary to you or you are more into the studio thing then you definitely want to get into mods and maybe even a rack if you are super serious about playing live.  To see how pedals and a rack work together you should check out the aforementioned film, It Might Get Loud, or YouTube to get a true feel.  But be aware that when it comes to modulation and effects racks, you pay for what you get.  Good is never cheap and cheap is never good.

Furch Guitars Adds Zebrawood Models to Its Blue Series

Furch Guitars, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of premium quality guitars, is introducing two new models. Featuring zebrano back and sides, the two new solid all-woods guitars will complement the Blue Series. Zebrawood is an exotic tonewood that has a striking natural appearance, and delivers a pleasing full sound with darker overtones.

The new Furch Blue SA and Furch Blue Plus SA models feature a specially tuned Sitka spruce soundboard, its light color is tastefully complemented by a striking and deeply resonant African zebrawood back and sides. Zebrawood owes its name to its dark brown to black stripes that are reminiscent of a zebra. This combination of Sitka spruce and zebrawood translates into a pleasing sound with balanced mids and an even
response across the entire acoustic spectrum. The natural look of these instruments is underscored by a host of additional stylish appointments.
The top is decorated by binding and pickguard made from artificial tortoise.
The pickguard also features a transparent extension toward the soundhole. The FurchBlue Plus SA model has a fully transparent pickguard to underscore the fine natural grain of the soundboard. The soundhole is surrounded by a double concentric ring rosette with black walnut inlays. The fingerboard has white mother-of-pearl front and side dot position markers to facilitate orientation. The guitars are protected by the proprietary Open-Pore Finish, which enhances the natural and visual characteristics of the tonewoods and provides excellent protection. The soundboard of the Furch Blue Plus SA model also features High-Gloss
Finish, which consists of an ultra-thin (160 µm) layer of consistent high-gloss UV lacquer that enhances resonance and provides unmatched protection.
The new Furch Blue SA and Furch Blue Plus SA models are now available from all Furch authorized dealers.

Cort Guitars Grand Regal Series Offers Royal Treatment

With the introduction of the GA-QF acoustic-electric guitar, Cort Guitars adds an elegant aesthetic to the popular Grand Regal Series. With striking workmanship on the series-signature Grand Auditorium body, the GA-QF offers multiple luxurious features without the fancy price tag.

When players first encounter the GA-QF, their eyes are drawn immediately to the highly figured maple top, available in Trans Black Burst or Coral Blue Burst finishes. They’ll also note the special design of the fingerboard inlay on the merbau fretboard, specifically designed for the overall aesthetics of this model. An abalone rosette completes the high-end look. Just as much thought and detail was put into the strength and playability of the chosen materials. The maple top contributes to this model’s unique sonic character, which is bright and tight with a strong focused projection that complements the strong, warm midrange of the mahogany back and sides.

Like other models in the Grand Regal Series, the GA-QF was carefully designed for playability. The grand auditorium body with Venetian cutaway is sized perfectly between the large dreadnought and the more intimate grand concert models. This makes the Grand Regal ideal for both strumming/flatpicking and for fingerstyle playing. The Fishman Isys T preamp system features a LED tuner and phase control, along with a Sonicore pickup, will relay all the acosutic tones naturally and organically.

Also enhancing the GA-QF’s playability is the 45 mm Graph Tech NuBone XB nut and saddle, specially formulated to produce more bass harmonics. Manufactured under high heat and pressure, NuBone XB is strong, durable and consistent throughout to ensure superior vibration transfer. The dovetail neck joint reinforces the vibrational transfer, while diecast machine heads provide tuning stability.

Cort’s Grand Regal Series offers acoustic-electric guitars for versatile players who prefer to have one guitar capable of covering a variety of sounds and styles. The feature-packed GA-QF is an ideal addition for players to want to enjoy that versatility with some frills, at a surprisingly affordable street price of $299.99.

Michael Kelly Guitar Co. to Kickstart Lightweight Electric Guitar Collection

CLEARWATER, FL (Mar 21, 2017)— For Michael Kelly Guitar Co., innovation is more than a market experiment—it comes down to listening to the community of players and their needs. After analyzing customer interactions across multiple platforms, Michael Kelly determined there was a pressing need for a lighter weight electric guitar option. In listening to these needs, Michael Kelly is using Kickstarter to bring a brand new series of guitars to their community.

“Our players’ community has been a guiding force in the development of many of our recent collections,” says company founder Tracy Hoeft. “Repeatedly, we heard from many players who, because of various health reasons, truly needed a lighter guitar option. Some were ready to give up playing altogether. Now we are excited to be able to fill this need for players who want to keep making music.”

The company embarked on a two-year research and development effort that resulted in the Michael Kelly Enlightened Series collection, which will pre-launch on Kickstarter at the end of March before launching globally this summer. Each guitar in this series has a target weight of 6 pounds—30% lighter than traditional electrics—without compromising sonic quality or styling.

The Michael Kelly team of guitar experts knew the challenges before they embarked on this mission. But, the team was determined to addresses every challenge head-on with the goal of optimizing the player experience.

Starting with the body, Michael Kelly’s designers began to interview experts in tone wood from around the world. After testing a dozen varieties, they decided on a species of mahogany that delivered excellent tone while being significantly lower in weight than more commonly used tone woods. The body was also designed to be thinner than normal, providing a dual benefit of added comfort as well as weight reduction. The risk of negatively affecting the instrument’s tone as a result of removing weight was mitigated by lightening the area behind the bridge. The development of four ports further allowed the team to reduce weight while retaining the instrument’s tone.

Additionally, these guitars feature parts that have been tooled up with aluminum, rather than standard steel guitar parts. Aluminum also proved to be ideal for tone and improving instrument performance. In terms of balance, no detail was overlooked in trying to solve the neck-heavy weight problem. Adjustments included finding an alternative set of locations for the strap buttons to overcome the issue.

Of course, an expertly engineered, lightweight design is only as practical as the sonic quality it enables. Michael Kelly worked to identify the natural sonic profile of each guitar in the Enlightened Series. Each model has customized pickups to enhance sonic performance, as well as special electronics modifications that increase the selection of sounds to allow each player to fine-tune their favorites.

The Michael Kelly team can’t wait for players to try out this innovative “light-done-right” collection that won’t break the bank—or their back! Enlightened Series guitars will be priced beginning at MSRP $850. Stay tuned and visit the Kickstarter project page, to learn about exclusive incentives and rewards for pledges.

Utilizing an exclusive metalizing process, Zelinsky achieves a realistic engraved metal look on a traditional alder wood body. Guitars are only available factory direct through Zelinsky’s ecommerce site,

Marrying the aesthetics of metal with the feel and tonal properties of wood was the maker’s inspiration. “I have been working on perfecting this look for several months,” stated Zelinsky. “Engraved metal guitars currently on the market have a sexy appeal but are extremely expensive. Additionally, they have other less desirable qualities associated with the metal bodies. We have 100% achieved that look ‘in wood’ without the lofty price tag. In a test at a local music store, players looking at my Dellatera side-by-side a metal body guitar were not able to tell the difference.”

The Engraved Paisley Dellatera comes standard with Zelinsky’s patented Z-Glide™ Reduced Friction Neck. Z-Glide™ utilizes a laser-textured design to eliminate that sticky/tacky feel by removing 70% of the neck surface. Z-Glide™ puts a little air between players and their guitar letting hands glide up and down the neck.

Players can custom configure their guitar with the choice of rosewood or maple fingerboards, various hardware packages, pickguards, and pickup options including Zelinsky’s revolutionary SideKick™ Pickup. SideKicks are the first pickups that enable a player to have a true single-coil and vintage humbucker in the same space. Players can switch from single to humbucker and the volumes absolutely match.

Additional features include a rock hard Canadian maple neck, 9.5” – 12” compound radius fingerboard, 20:1 locking tuners, Zelinsky’s Hi-Tail single-coil bridge pickup and Broad-Tone neck single-coil, master volume and tone control with 3-way switch, graphite nut and string retainer. Players can customize and order their Engraved Paisley Dellatera directly from Zelinsky’s website,, starting at $1299.

660 Guitars Unveils CT/52 Guitar

GILMER, TX June 8, 2016 – 660 Guitars announced today the introduction of their latest guitar design, the CT/52. The CT/52 has been engineered as a modern slant on a classic, single cut guitar design. The CT/52 extends 660 Guitars’ already robust line of American-made instruments, featuring all-aluminum bodies. Customers can place orders directly from the factory at
The 25.5” scale CT/52 captures bold engineering and modern playability, while maintaining the principle build features consistent in all 660 Guitars. Handcrafted with USA parts, the CT/52’s body is constructed of one piece of aircraft-grade aluminum, paired with a shallow-oval 16” radius solid graphite/carbon fiber neck, and weighing in at 7.5 lbs. The finish is a resilient powder coat, available in a multitude of color options. The bridge on the CT/52 is a Hipshot USA bridge and a Kahler Tremolo bridge is optional for an additional price. The pickups are 16.50K Dimarzio Dominion Humbuckers with ceramic magnets, mounted on ‘mini-rails’ to allow numerous user-adjusted tonal variations. Smoked acrylic black glass is standard. Hennessy Secure strap locks are also standard, and the guitar ships in an RB Aero low-profile case.
660 Guitars was forged on the friendship of builders Drew Emory and Myke Wilkerson, both independent builders who found they shared the same ideas in constructing guitar bodies out of metal, namely aircraft-grade aluminum. Traditional instruments are subject to many issues, from humidity, airline handling, to general use. Aluminum is an extremely rugged and durable building material, and offers the guitar world a change from traditional wood construction. The results are warm and resonant guitars with tank-like construction, and minimal weather-related issues.
The CT/52, along with all of 660 Guitars’ instruments, is handcrafted with pride in the USA, precision engineered, and built to exacting standards to minimalize maintenance and downtime, while ensuring the instruments are around for generations.
MSRP $3400 USD

Cort MBC-1 Matt Bellamy Signature Model Now Available in Red Sparkle Finish

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA (June 7, 2016) — In  2015, Cort teamed up with Manson Guitar Works and musician Matthew Bellamy, the frontman and lead guitarist of Muse, to develop the Cort MBC-1 Matt Bellamy Signature Model electric guitar. The award-winning MBC-1 was built to replicate Bellamy’s custom-made Manson guitar, down to the resilient Matte Black (MBLK) finish. Now, the MBC-1 is available in Red Sparkle (RS), another signature Bellamy look that features a bright red base coat with holoflake finish. The MBC-1 RS promises the same sound and feel as its series partner, but with a stunningly vibrant color.
Manson developed special pickups for the MBC-1 model based on more than two decades of experience working with Bellamy. The versatile setup includes a fully voiced humbucker in the bridge and a true single coil neck pickup that reflects his stage and studio custom guitars. Simple and versatile, the MBC-1 features a single-volume control, master tone, and three-way switch that controls the humbucker/single coil pickup combination. These controls work together with the MBC-1’s discrete kill button that allows the player to creatively expand the guitar’s already wide range of sounds. The result is a big full tone with a rock-solid feel.
A fully adjustable tune-o-matic style bridge and stop tailpiece anchor the MBC-1’s basswood body. The single-cutaway instrument features a bolt-on, hard maple neck with a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard and 25.5’’ scale length. On the headstock, the MBC-1 is equipped with die-cast locking tuners that are important to the character of the guitar’s sound and assure stage-ready tuning stability. Chrome hardware completes the look.
Just like the MBC-1 MBLK model, MBC-1 RS has been built to the exact and demanding specifications of Matt Bellamy, who has been recognized as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. Bellamy is the principal songwriter for Muse, an influential English rock trio formed in 1994. To date, the band has won two GRAMMY® Awards for Best Rock Album—The Resistance (2009) and Drones (2015). Bellamy was named a Cort signature model artist in 2015.
The MBC1-RS is priced at $649 MSRP.

MotherBrain Oozes Delay from Dr. No Effects

It doesn’t take a genius to know the importance of a good delay pedal. Just use your brain.
The limited run MotherBrain Analog Delay is the latest creation from the always unpredictable Dr. No Effects.  The hand crafted pedal is an excellent sonic tool for guitarists, bass players, keyboards and vocal.
The MotherBrain is an insanely high-end quality delay that produces classic, classy tones. With three easy-to-adjust functions, it’s easy to achieve rockabilly slapback or insane oscillation — just grab hold of a cerebrum, dial in, and you’re ready to go. Present runs your signal from “Wet” to “Dry.” Insanity sets your delay time. Memory locks in your feedback for “Long Term” or “Short Term.” When the MotherBrain is engaged, it has no influence on the actual send through signal, that stays at the same level and clarity as your original signal. To achieve maximum results, Dr. No suggests using as the last effect in your pedal chain.
As is the case with all Dr. No Effects, you don’t have to be a brain surgeon to dig into the MotherBrain. It’s user-friendly, simple, and easy to use. All a player needs is a 9-volt battery and they’re on their way to robust tone.
From the circuit to the silkscreened housing, custom brain knobs, box, and brain keychain, The MotherBrain is entirely handmade and built to last a lifetime. It’s also a limited edition: only 350 are available, each one signed and numbered by Dr. No.
