Steel Panther Proves That Heavy Metal is Alive and Well in Cleveland

by Emmy Susani

I’ve had the privilege of seeing this outlandish group so many times
I’ve lost count. Their stage presence, humor, and musical talent never fail.
These guys are one of a kind. Not much can be said about this group that hasn’t been said already. This scandalous band has been breaking walls down since they burst onto the scene in 2009.

Stitched Up Heart is support for this leg of the tour. The group was founded in 2010 by vocalist Alecia ‘Mixi’ Demner, and the current line-up consists of James Decker – drums/backing vocals, Merritt Goodwin – lead guitar and Randy Mathias – bass/backing vocals.

This group really surprised me with how energic they are on stage and how they captivated the crowd when I wasn’t expecting them to.
I’ve been a casual fan of them for a long time, but I didn’t feel like
they fit the bill. I am one to admit when I am wrong and boy, was I wrong.
They put on a fantastic set and I would love to see SP bring them out on the road again.

The boys have been touring in promotion of their fifth studio record
“Heavy Metal Rules’ which came out back in September.

One doesn’t exactly go to a Steel Panther show without knowing what
you’re getting into (except for me but that story is for another time.)
Their show is a sexual explosion met with comedic banters, catchy riffs,
and lots of hair spray. Their show never disappoints, the energy and the
undeniable talent of these musicians are incredible.

This band is killing it right now, and at the very top of their game.
I try to take new fans or people who haven’t heard of them before to their
shows, and every single time their show makes these people into new fans.
If Steel Panther is coming to a city near you, Do not miss the chance to see them.

Mark Hunter of CHIMAIRA Stars in Upcoming Documentary About Mental Health, “Down Again”

Out October 10, 2018, World Mental Health Day, at https://downagainfilm.com/

Read an In-Depth Interview + View Teaser Clips via Loudwire

“I have dealt with depression and bipolar for a good part of my life,” says Mark Hunter, vocalist for iconic Cleveland, Ohio-based heavy metal band CHIMAIRA“It’s probably safe to say that most CHIMAIRA fans understand that the band’s music, lyrics, and live performances were my cathartic outlet.”
On October 10, 2018 – World Mental Health Day – Mark Hunter will share his personal story about utilizing his art to battle personal struggles and bipolar disorder in a heartfelt upcoming documentary, Down Again. The film is directed by Nick Cavalier – also recognized for directing Derek Hess’ award-winning Forced Perspective documentary – and will be free and available to stream at this link on October 10: https://downagainfilm.com/
Read an in-depth interview about Down Again and view clips of the film via Loudwirehttp://loudwire.com/down-again-explores-mental-illness-via-a-metal-frontman/
Mark Hunter and director Nick Cavalier met on a panel speaking about Mental Health and Creativity monitored by Dr. Patrick Runnels (featured in the documentary) during the Acting Out! festival in Cleveland – a festival put on in 2017 to raise mental health awareness. After hearing his story at the panel, Nick approached Mark to create a short film around his ability to cope with mental illness in the public spotlight through the art. Down Again juxtaposes CHIMAIRA‘s history with Mark’s life events and lyrics, presenting an intimate timeline through the rise and fall of the band and Mark’s ability to channel it into art. The film also explores the catharsis created by the act of making music and art and how the end result affects the fans.
“I was a bit apprehensive [to do this documentary] at first,” continues Mark Hunter. “Not because I am unwilling to share my story, but more so because there are thousands of people infinitely more interesting than me. And worse off than me. But in the end, I am thankful to have been a part of this short documentary. It captured an extremely critical moment in time. The rekindling of friendships with my former bandmates was one of the most significant healing moments of my entire life.”
Mark adds, “It’s unfortunate to note the past couple of years have been tough on the music community. We lost a lot of talented people to their struggles with depression. I hope the viewers of our film will take away a story of healing and feel the impact of dealing with mental health issues head-on.”

In addition to interviews with Mark Hunter and those in his life about his mental health, upbringing, and the formation/rise of CHIMAIRA, the documentary also includes high-quality video footage of the band’s 15th Christmas show at the Agora in Cleveland (2017), featuring the band’s original line-up – marking their first performance together after nearly seven years of separation.
Mark Hunter explains, “This is not a story about CHIMAIRA, although fans of the band will be excited to see familiar faces and hear some of their favorite songs. The audience will get a glimpse into my personality and how I use art to better deal with the harder moments of life.”

In addition to the direction of photography by Tyler Clark, the film also features a devastating live audio mix by CHIMAIRA guitarist Rob Arnold.
Not only does Down Again explore Mark’s art via CHIMAIRA, but also his photography – visiting Mark’s world not only through his figurative lens but his literal one. He adds, “Since the band ended in 2014, photography has been my passion and a great way to fill my time with positivity.”
Down Again was made possible by a generous donation from The Centers for Family and Children, and marketing support via Hope For The Day.

MUSHROOMHEAD came together when drummer Skinny formed the band as a side project. The band wore masks to go unrecognized, but after only a few shows they developed a rabid and loyal fan base in Cleveland. They released their 1995 self-titled debut album independently and it went on to became an underground hit, which was history in the making because the band really had no proper distribution at the time. Superbuickfollowed in 1996 and M3 in 1999, all released via an underground street effort. After the band felt its image and hyper-melodic, heavy style of music was being diluted by other bands jumping into this space, the band started to change their look to reflect nothing out there.

Universal Records saw the release of XX (a combination of the past independent releases) in 2001. In 2003, XIII was released, spawning the single “Sun Doesn’t Rise” which was featured on MTVHeadbangers Ball and the Freddy Vs. Jason soundtrack. The album also featured the hidden track “Crazy”, a song originally recorded by Seal. The album debuted at #40 on the Billboard Top 200 charts and sold 400,000 copies worldwide. In December 2005, the band signed with the pioneering rock label, Megaforce Records (Metallica, Anthrax, Ministry) and released Savior Sorrow in 2006 and Beautiful Stories For Ugly Children in 2010. In 2014, the band released The Righteous & The Butterfly, which debuted at #20 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Billboard Independent Chart and #1 on the Billboard Hard Rock Chart.
Expect more clips and information to be released leading up to the release of VOLUME III!

BOARDING HOUSE REACH sees Jack White expanding his musical palate with perhaps his most ambitious work thus far, a collection of songs that are simultaneously timeless and modern. Written and conceived while holed up in a spartan apartment with literally no outside world distractions, White exclusively used the same kind of gear he had when he was 15 years old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer, and the most basic of instrumentation). The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain — crunching rock ‘n’ roll, electro and hard funk, proto punk, hip hop, gospel blues, and even country — all remapped and born anew to fit White’s matchless vision and sense of restless experimentation. BOARDING HOUSE REACH is a testament to the breadth of Jack White’s creative power and his bold artistic ambition.

BOARDING HOUSE REACH features White on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars and drums, organ, and synthesizers. He’s backed by a remarkable new lineup of musicians that includes: drummer Louis Cato (Beyoncé, Q-Tip, John Legend, Mariah Carey), bassists Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger) and NeonPhoenix (Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z), synthesizer players DJ Harrison and Anthony “Brew” Brewster (Fishbone, The Untouchables), keyboardists Neal Evans (Soulive, Talib Kweli, John Scofield) and Quincy McCrary (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Pitbull), percussionists Bobby Allende (David Byrne, Marc Anthony) and Justin Porée (Ozomatli), and backing vocalists Esther Rose and Ann & Regina McCrary of Nashville’s beloved gospel trio, The McCrary Sisters, as well as longtime collaborators like drummers Daru Jones (Nas, Talib Kweli) and Carla Azar (Autolux, Depeche Mode, Doyle Bramhall II). Singer-songwriter C.W. Stoneking also appears, contributing a stirring spoken word performance to the album’s “Abulia and Akrasia.”

BOARDING HOUSE REACH was produced by Jack White III and recorded at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN, Sear Sound in New York, NY, and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, CA; the album was mixed by Bill Skibbe, Joshua V. Smith, and White at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN.

“Connected By Love” b/w “Respect Commander” is available now digitally worldwide and as a physical 7-inch vinyl single pressed at Third Man Pressing in Detroit, MI. The single is accompanied by a brand-new music video from director Pasqual Gutierrez – watch it now HERE.

“Connected By Love” was greeted with rapturous global applause upon its arrival earlier this month, withRolling Stone exclaiming, “The four-year wait is over” with the “blistering first single” from BOARDING HOUSE REACHBillboard declared the song “a classic White confessional blues burner,” while Entertainment Weeklycalled it “thrillingly weird…a searing, organ-lined plea to a former flame.” NPR‘s Bob Boilen raved: “Connected By Love” is “a blend of old guitar blues that is simultaneously on the edge of rock’s horizon.”

White and Third Man Records have also revealed details of their BOARDING HOUSE REACH-themed Vault Package #35, marking the ONLY limited edition of the new album. Vault Package #35 is highlighted by a limited edition, colored vinyl version of BOARDING HOUSE REACH that will be the only vinyl variation of the LP to be made available. Pressed at Third Man Pressing in the Cass Corridor of Detroit, the 180-gram, blue and black swirl vinyl edition features exclusive Vault-only cover art which dramatically depicts White’s stylized face and is printed on arresting holographic foil paper in the classic Stoughton tip-on style. The LP is further accompanied by a unique-to-this-package 12″ x 24″ insert featuring the complete album lyrics.

The BOARDING HOUSE REACH Vault package also includes a two-song demo 7-inch single, offering up embryonic versions of “Connected By Love” and the album track, “Why Walk a Dog?” The former take – billed here under its original title, “Infected By Love” – was recorded entirely by White in the aforementioned Nashville apartment. White found keyboard tones on this recording that the world’s most seasoned session musicians could not recreate in the studio and thus, some of those tones were sourced from this simple demo to be utilized on the final album version. Meanwhile, “Why Walk a Dog?” was recorded, like much of the BOARDING HOUSE REACH demos, alone at his private songwriting refuge. With its expressive synth and drum machine cadence, the track is overtly hypnotic even in this early state. Indeed, the “Connected By Love” and “Why Walk a Dog?” single provides a fascinating insight into White’s process, revealing the creative progression of his songs from inception to completion.

In addition to the recorded material, Vault Package #35 comes with three separate and exclusive photographs shot during BOARDING HOUSE REACH recording sessions. Taken by noted photographer – and White’s longtime friend – David Swanson at Sear Sound in New York and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, these large-format, high quality glossy reproductions are exclusive to the Vault. The photographs will be coupled with three foil-stamped poetry broadsides, printed on silky metallic papers (black, white, and blue) containing White’s poems from the new album tracks, “Abulia and Akrasia,” “Ezmerelda Steals the Show,” and “Get in the Mind Shaft.”

Lastly, BOARDING HOUSE REACH Vault Package #35 will also include, for the third year running, a custom 2018 Third Man Records challenge coin, complete with album-specific artwork. The substantial and stylish coin doubles as a 45 adaptor and grants its holder 10% off purchases in both Third Man Records storefronts. Past Third Man Challenge coins will no longer be valid at Third Man storefronts once Vault Package #35 ships.

Third Man Vault subscriptions are open now through January 31. All BOARDING HOUSE REACH Vault packages will ship to arrive on and as close to the album’s official March 23 street date. Learn more about this package, additional Vault benefits and subscribe now at Third Man Records HERE.

Third Man Records founder Jack White is a 12-time GRAMMY® Award-winner and 35-time nominee. His most recent full-length release, 2016’s JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS: 1998-2016 (Third Man Records/Columbia), collected 26 acoustic-based songs from throughout White’s wide-ranging musical career, spanning album tracks, B-sides, remixes, alternate versions, and previously unreleased material from The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and White’s groundbreaking solo career. The collection debuted at #1 onBillboard‘s “Vinyl Albums” chart upon its September 2016 release – a position also achieved by 2012’s RIAA gold certified solo debut, BLUNDERBUSS, and 2014’s chart-topping LAZARETTO, both of which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 as well.

Whitechapel Celebrate a Decade of The Somatic Defilement

To celebrate a decade’s worth of the groundbreaking album, The Somatic Defilement, the Tennessee metal band Whitechapel embarked on a headlining tour to giving people more of the old school songs that a true diehard fan would ask for.  Since they were not swinging by Pittsburgh this time around, a road trip was in order so we could bear witness to this killer setlist that any metalhead would enjoy.  This time around, I can personally say I truly do miss the local Pittsburgh crowd while I traveled out to Kent, Ohio for this show; in the end, it was still worth it.

Even though the tour was based on Whitechapel’s first album, they played a small handful of some of their latest releases and fan favorites before tuning their instruments even lower for what everyone was asking for.  Starting the show off with a couple songs off of their latest release, Mark of the Blade, before venturing into some songs off of their self-titled album and the follow up to that album, Our Endless War.  Not a whole lot of time was wasted since Whitechapel is usually a band of business and doesn’t like to waste time while on stage.  After a solid seven songs from their most recent collection (setlist below), we finally jumped into the reason everyone came to the show.

Curious of what they would play off of their album based around the elusive Jack the Ripper, I can report that the song choice put my mind at ease because they only picked the best songs off of the album (almost the entire album).  Starting off the second part of their set with the first two songs from The Somatic Defilement is more than enough to get anyone going down in the pit area.  Following them were some of the classic songs still played at shows for the most part including Vicer Exciser and Prostatic Fluid Asphyxiation.  Bliss to my ears in the most normal way possible.

With only three songs left out of the set from The Somatic Defilement, Whitechapel has definitely proven themselves time and time again by sticking to their guns and playing the music they thoroughly enjoy.  Where some bands have gone a different direction later in their careers or even switched styles completely, we truly have a band that seeks out the heaviest of songs to stick with tradition.  Where most bands flop in this category, Whitechapel still finds new ways to keep it going in the ever so judgmental music industry.  Celebrating one of the heaviest albums to be released in the past decade was a great choice for them to get back to their roots before starting off the new year with whatever else they have planned.  Needless to say, if you have the chance to check out this store, you must.  If you need more convincing, their supporting acts include Carnifex, Rings of Saturn, and Entheos.  All them as well were on the top of their game that night, so getting to this show is once again a must.

BLACK WIZARD: US Tour With Brant Bjork And Royal Thunder Underway

Canadian heavy metal/stoner rock faction BLACK WIZARD is currently waging their riff war across the US supporting Brant Bjork and Royal Thunder. The tour, which BLACK WIZARD officially kicked off April 9th in Sacramento, California, will run through May 1st in Los Angeles, California and includes performances with Pentagram. See all confirmed dates below.
BLACK WIZARD continues to tour in support of their New Waste full-length, released via Listenable Records last year and currently streaming at THIS LOCATION. Boasting nine tracks of red-eyed, road-raging, retro-riff worship, the record continues to earn approval from media outlets globally. Writes Sonic Abuse of the record, “Taking the best bits from thirty years of heavy-ass metal, there are hints of Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Purple and more, all wrapped up in BLACK WIZARD‘s own, patchouli-scented haze. The prog aspects of the album help to make the sound more unique and interesting and the delivery is spot on – gritty and brutal and yet with a deft touch that keeps things interesting throughout.” In a 4/5 rating, New Noise Magazine concurs, “BLACK WIZARD may be one of the best retro acts going, and the band are certainly more interested in having fun and doing what comes naturally than recycling old riffs. It doesn’t hurt that you don’t have to be stoned to enjoy it, too.” BeatRoute Magazine charmingly champions BLACK WIZARD for being, “the only band in town that will add inches to your dick.” Stereokiller gushes simply, “I hope this band makes albums every year for the next twenty years,” while The Sludgelord hails a, “fine retro record, filled with good riffs and 100% commitment.” Adds Heavy Blog Is Heavy in a 4/5 score, “From the very beginning, New Waste wraps you in a thick blanket of distorted grooviness, galloping bass lines and guitars that seems to switch from shred to riff and back on the drop of hat.”
New Waste is out on Listenable Records. Secure your copy today at THIS LOCATION.

BLACK WIZARD was forged in 2009 by four high school friends. Founding members Adam Grant and Eugene Parkomenko were both working underwhelming construction jobs at the time, passing the days to the sounds of Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Witch, and Electric Wizard. Heavily motivated by the thick, weighty sounds of bands like Bison and 3 Inches Of Blood monopolizing the scene at the time, “The Wiz” was born. Having followed a true DIY aesthetic, the band has released two full length LPs along with a 7″ single independently and sold over five thousand copies worldwide.
