WICKED GARDEN Releases Official Music Video for “Home, Too Far”

homecover2

Las Vegas, NV based rock band WICKED GARDEN has released the official music video for their new single, “Home, Too Far.” Written and directed by Dominick Muzio and Shawn Trojahn, the video for “Home, Too Far” was filmed by Stephy Hayward of Livewire Photography and edited by Nicholas Muzio at Die-Hearts Productions.

“This is a song about loss, and how you can never get back the time you have with someone once they are gone. And while the term “Home” refers to an afterlife or another plane of existence, it’s too far away for the people that have been left behind” – Dominick Muzio (Lead Singer/Guitarist)

“I was frustrated by not having written anything in a while. Then when I came up with this riff, I knew it had something. It was different from our other songs, but still sounded like us.” – Shawn Trojahn (Lead Guitarist)

Esteemed Photographer Jeremy Saffer and Rare Bird Books Announce Halloween Release for “Daughters of Darkness” Coffee Table Photo Book

Noted celebrity and music photographer Jeremy Saffer has joined forces with Rare Bird Books for the release of the coffee table book Daughters of Darkness, a photographic love letter to the iconography of Black Metal and Doom.
“‘Daughters of Darkness’ has been a project that’s been in the works for a third of my lifetime,” Saffer says. “I knew that I wanted to make the most of this project and, most importantly, have it done the right way. Rare Bird not only shared my vision for what the physical collection of all this work should look like, but also are as excited for this project to come to fruition as I am. It’s really important that an artist’s vision is shared by the people bringing that vision into physical visual form.”
Adds Tyson Cornell, CEO, Rare Bird, “Rare Bird is happy to announce that we have acquired acclaimed photographer Jeremy Saffer’s ‘Daughters of Darkness.’ A labor of love that took 12 years and over 400 models, ‘Daughter of Darkness’ is Jeremy’s photographic love letter to the iconography of Black Metal and Doom. With 100+ photos, ‘Daughters of Darkness’ is a coffee table book that combines a love of photography, music, and the subculture of Metal.”
Having independently published two previous photography books, Saffer knew that Daughters of Darkness’ potential could be better realized through a collaboration with a dedicated publisher. Saffer quickly realized that Rare Bird Books shared his enthusiasm and passion for the project. “There is no question that Rare Bird will not just cultivate my work but push it forward with their incredible like-minded vision and guidance to make ‘Daughters of Darkness’ the best book it can be,” Saffer adds. “Every little detail and nuance that was important to me was important to them. Walking into my first face to face meeting with them, the owner was wearing a Satyricon hoodie, and we had talked metal as much as we had talked about the book. I knew I had found the perfect home for ‘Daughters of Darkness.’”
Saffer’s relationship with The Oracle began when photographing artists from the company’s stable of clients, including owner Dez Fafara’s own bands, DevilDriver and Coal Chamber. Seeing the work that Fafara and his wife Anahstasia have put into growing a thriving management company, Saffer felt it was the right time to hand over some of the logistical side of his business so he could focus on the artistic side.
“Getting to that next level in one’s career takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and sometimes the guidance of a like-minded team who fully understand and want to help you accomplish the goals you set forth for yourself,” Saffer explains. “Every conversation with Dez and Anahstasia is like getting a large syringe of adrenaline straight to your heart. Their passion, advice, vision, and positive energy is priceless beyond compare. I am so honored to be under such an incredible team who truly understand what I want to do and how to accomplish these things together. I have been able to let go of some of those hats I was wearing, knowing they are in more than capable hands, so I may focus more on my photography.”
Says The Oracle’s Dez Fafara, “We at The Oracle believe every artist is unique in their own right and brings something positive to the art and business table. We have the privilege of representing and being a guiding force in our artists lives,’ and our broad knowledge and experience affords us the opportunity to represent not only iconic musicians, well-known producers, influencer on air talent, as well as photographers such as Jeremy Saffer, who has been called ‘the photographer of a musical generation.’ Jeremy has a certain eye for his art, is trusted by even the most reclusive musicians to not only shoot live onstage but intimate and often forbidden areas such as backstage or in the homes of these stars. We are proud to be part of his journey in releasing his book ‘Daughters of Darkness’ through Rare Bird, and we hope you all who follow true art will appreciate the dark aesthetic of these photos in his new book.”
Daughters of Darkness is scheduled for release on October 30 and will be available in four editions: Standard Edition Bundle [Signed] ($60), Blood Edition Bundle [Signed w/ Slipcase] ($100), Extra-Bloody Edition Bundle [Signed Limited Edition] ($150) and The True Daughters of Darkness Deluxe Box Set [Custom Hand-Sewn w/ 24 Extra Photo Pages Not Included In Any Other Edition—Exclusively Limited to 25 Copies Worldwide] ($666). Legendary Alt-Rock Front-Man Remembered in ‘Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road, by Douglas Esper

Cropped Doug

On December 3rd 2019, ScoutMedia released Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road, by Douglas Esper.

“For twenty years I was Chuck’s fan, band mate, cheerleader, unknowing drug mule, AA plus one, friend, and I tried to help him write his autobiography,” said Douglas Esper. “After he passed away November 9th 2017, I continued working on a book about the recording of Chuck’s solo record with producer Matt Wallace (Faith No MoreDeftonesThe Replacements), a behind the scenes look at the reunion shows Chuck performed with Faith No More in 2016, and the ups and downs of dealing with Chuck Mosley, warts and all.”

Chuck Mosley and Douglas Esper performed over 150 shows together, recorded under the Chuck Mosley name as well as the indie-pop moniker, Indoria, and they acted together in the short film, Like An Open Heart It Shines by David Collupy.

“Chuck battled so many demons, but he remained a kind-hearted soul who loved to make other people laugh until the end. Our tour wasn’t always pretty and we spent a lot of time bickering, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We tried like hell to reintroduce Chuck Mosley to the world. This is our story from my point of view.”

Chuck Mosley spent time fronting Faith No More, Bad BrainsCementVUA, Indoria, and had just released a new album, Soul Pretender, with the band Primitive Race the week he passed away.

Douglas Esper appears in the upcoming found footage horror film, Dwellers, produced by Ellefson Films (David Ellefson of Megadeth). The film was written, directed, and stars Drew Fortier, who toured with Chuck Mosley and Douglas Esper in 2017 and is also directing Thanks … And Sorry, a documentary about the late singer/songwriter.

Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road is available now via the publisher at ScoutMediaBooksMusic.com/Store and Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other retailers.

Back

One hundred sixty shows, two rushed recording sessions, a reunion with an old band, and a Hail Mary shot at a comeback represent the tip of the iceberg of my twenty year journey with Chuck Mosley.

Chuck (Faith No More, Bad Brains, Cement) toured the globe as a vocalist, appeared on magazine covers, rubbed elbows with idols, and through it all he remained 100% convinced he didn’t deserve your praise. Yet, he desired acceptance more than almost anything else.

A self-proclaimed, “junkie and a liar,” Chuck shot himself in the foot, over and over, by shooting up elsewhere on his body. Meanwhile, I stumbled and fumbled and pushed and pulled and scraped and cried and begged and borrowed to earn him extra chances to prove himself. We loaded a van with a guitar, a conga, and an unfinished legacy hoping to reintroduce the world to Chuck Mosley.

Advance Praise for Reintroducing Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road

“I’ve gotta hand it to Doug: this is not a hack job, the only way to address a topic like Chuck with any authenticity is to do the hard time, and he definitely did that. Not a pleasant story by any stretch, his gaze does not shy away from ugly truths, yet in spite of this he’s managed to put together a touching dedication to his subject. Well done.” BILL GOULD (Faith No More)

“Douglas Esper’s Reintroducing Chuck Mosley not only reintroduces the late former Faith No More singer but reimagines him and, in doing so, reimagines the whole concept of what a music memoir is. Esper’s riveting read dispenses with Mosley’s time in Faith No More in one page just twelve pages in. It is a bold and brave statement of intent. This man is much more than the band that made him famous, and the book paints a picture of the real Mosley that no conventional biography could. Reintroducing Chuck Mosley is part biography, part road trip, part redemption tale, part buddy chronicle but so much more than that. Published novelist Esper’s lively writing style makes the book sing like fine fiction, but with the bitter sting of truth. ADRIAN HARTE (Author of Small Victories: The True Story of Faith No More)

Chuck Mosley: Life On and Off the Road is detailed, funny, heartbreaking, stranger than fiction and a must read for any fan of Chuck Mosley or Faith No More. It is a truly inspired piece of writing that serves as a great reminder to Chuck and his legacy. We are sure he would’ve been proud if not a little embarrassed…[ha ha].” JIM BROWN (FaithNoMoreFollowers)

A few words on Chuck Mosley:

“I was blown away by his voice. So original. Chuck has a great style that you can tell it’s him as soon as he starts singing. I’m a big fan and I was honored when he asked me to appear on his new stuff.” JONATHAN DAVIS (Korn)

“Some of Chuck’s and Faith No More’s songs sound like we all come from the same family! He tore shit up!!!!” Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels (RUN DMC)

“I was always a fan of his … He wore his heart on his sleeve … I thought he was pretty fearless to sing about some of the things he sang about.” MATT WALLACE, Producer (Faith No More, Maroon 5, The Replacements)

“Chuck Mosley was a huge part of what made Faith No More’s first two albums so classic, groundbreaking, and cutting edge. It has been argued that Chuck single-handedly created rap-rock with the release of the timeless anthem, ‘We Care a Lot.’ I would not disagree with this bold claim.” – GREG PRATO, author (The Faith No More & Mr. Bungle Companion)

Legendary Mountain Drummer Corky Laing to Release New Book, “Letters to Sarah,” on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12

CORKY LAING — THE LEGENDARY DRUMMER FOR MOUNTAINAND WEST, BRUCE AND LAING – SET TO RELEASE NEW BOOK,
TITLED “LETTERS TO SARAH” ON MOTHER’S DAY, SUNDAY, MAY 12

 “LETTERS TO SARAH” – CHRONICLING THE UPS AND DOWNS OF LAING’S LIFE –
FEATURES EXCERPTS OF TOUCHING, MEMORABLE, HUMOROUS, INTIMATE AND HEARTFELT
LETTERS WRITTEN TO HIS MOTHER OVER 34 YEAR PERIODCorky

Laing started his life in 1948 as the youngest of five siblings in Montreal, Canada. His early bands enjoyed a good local following, opened for many of the popular British invasion acts and, ultimately, got a record deal with Atlantic Records in New York. Through the teenage summers, his band was a regular on the Island of Nantucket, Massachusetts and frequented clubs in New York City. In September 1969, his life changed for good when Mountain happened. There started a few crazy years of rock mayhem. Mountain was followed by West, Bruce, and Laing – a supergroup featuring Leslie West, Jack Bruce and Corky that was destined for greatness but brought to an untimely end by the darker forces of the music scene. After West, Bruce, and Laing, Mountain continued to tour and record on and off. The months and years off left Corky with plenty of time for his own musical explorations and other careers. He released a solo album, almost set up another supergroup, worked in a driving service and in real estate, had a senior position at Chappell Music and became a vice president of A&R at Polygram, Canada. During his career, Corky has played, written and toured with the who’s who of rock. Keith Moon was a close pal, and Levon Helm, a mentor, and friend. Eric Clapton played on his solo album and Tony Williams recommended to Jack Bruce that Corky should be included in West, Bruce, and Laing. Corky Laing All-Star Show Band included Mick Taylor, Lester Chambers, and Meatloaf. Corky has written, among others, with Peter Frampton, Mick Jagger, Ian Hunter, Mick Ronson, and obviously, with Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi and Jack Bruce. At the Lone Star Café in New York, he partied with the likes of Robin Williams and John Belushi.    However, Letters to Sarah (Polite Bystander Productions, 2019) is a rock autobiography with a difference. In addition to the exceptionally honest and endearing voice of Corky chronicling the ups and downs of his life, there are excerpts from dozens of letters (out of the c. 200) that Corky wrote to his mother, Sarah, between the years 1963 and 1997. She had saved them all. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his roots and also, to make sense of his life. This continues in Letters to Sarah, as Corky relives the first 50 years of his life, up until his mother’s passing in 1998. The book opens with a Foreword by the incomparable Kinky Friedman. It was written together with Corky’s manager and partner, Tuija Takala, PhD., who is a widely published academic author and who, initially discovered the letters to Sarah tucked away in a box at Corky’s rehearsal studio.

Author & Musician Jeremy Wagner Releases New Edition of Acclaimed Novel, “The Armageddon Chord”

“Wagner debuts with a highly entertaining blend…of heavy metal and hardcore horror…electrified by breakneck pacing, a cast of over-the-top characters and memorable lines…” – Publishers Weekly

Jeremy Wagner, founder of internationally acclaimed death metal band Broken Hope, wrote his first novel about the power of heavy metal and its horrific possibilities in the wrong hands. Almost a decade later, The Armageddon Chord is being republished through Riverdale Avenue Books’ Afraid imprint with a new cover and interior illustrations by artist Claudio Bergamin (Rabid HeartJudas Priest) and a new introduction that puts the genesis of the book in perspective. In addition to ebook and trade paperback editions out today, the book will be available in hardcover (May 9 release) and audio (summer release) for the first time soon. Pick up your copy of the new edition in Paperback via Amazon and in eBook format via Amazon and Barnes & Noble. The horror novel follows the discovery of an ancient Egyptian hieroglyph that contains music so evil that it has the power to unleash the Apocalypse upon the world and grant immortality to the chosen who will reign with Satan. Festus Baustone III, a multi-billionaire with a drive to crush anyone who defies him and a desire to live forever, will do anything to bring the Song of Sethis to life-even if it means sacrificing his own daughter and anyone else who stands in his way. Kirk Vaisto, known as the “God of Guitar” by his millions of worldwide fans, is given an offer he can’t refuse. Caught between the forces of divine good and monumental evil, Kirk will find that there’s a powerful evil lurking in his very guitar strings as he transcribes the Song of Sethis for Festus Baustone and Helmut Hartkopff. Turning Aknaseth’s hieroglyphics into music will be the first step into the abyss… Kirk Vaisto sets off on a musical journey that takes him from an unholy chapter in ancient Egyptian history to the Holy Cross, to the concert stage and to the very edge of Hell itself as he gives the performance of a lifetime. Will it be immortality, annihilation and the Apocalypse, or salvation and deliverance from evil? All is at stake by Kirk Vaisto’s hand when he strikes The Armageddon Chord. “I’m beyond delighted to see The Armageddon Chord get a proper re-release,” said author Jeremy Wagner. “Joining forces with Riverdale Avenue Books/Afraid is the best thing that could’ve happened for this novel. I can’t wait for new readers to get this in their hands for the first time, and for my longtime readers to experience all again in it’s bigger, badder, and apocalyptic glory!” In 2011, Wagner released The Armageddon Chord to critical acclaim. Rolling Stone called the novel, “Pulp fiction at its breeziest best.”

MF Ruckus Launch Their Rock Comic: The Front Lines of Good Times

America’s favorite power rock party machine MF Ruckus have launched a new comic book and motion comic that is just as wild and reckless as the band entitled The Front Lines of Good TimesThe Front Lines of Good Times is scripted by the band including some insane touring experiences set in a pre-post-apocalyptic setting that has to be experienced to believe. Drawn by the dashingly handsome Jake Fairly of This is Heavy Metal fame Fairly’s masterful art makes the panels of Front Lines come to life and jump off the page.  The Front Lines of Good Times can be ordered from MFR’s web site here: https://mfruckus.com/home

“We’re absolutely ecstatic to be working with Jake,” Said MFR vocalist Aaron Howell. “It’s a match made in heaven…or hell….whichever one is better.

Artist Jake Fairly, “Do you ever feel like you’re the exact right person for the job? Well that’s how I feel about working on The Front Lines of Good Times with MF Ruckus. The book combines my favorite things; rock and roll and comics.

About The Front Lines of Good Times:
The Front Lines of Good Times is set in the not-so-distant pre-apocalyptic future. The year is 2040. A near-extinction event known as “The great dying” has wiped out two-thirds of the Earth’s population through a long, drawn out series of seemingly unrelated causes. Organized governments and religions around the world have dissolved giving way to new systems of rule and worship, some of which are quite dark and destructive. Such is the case in the United States where a military Junta has felled the democratic republic in place of a harsh and brutal fascist regime known as the New Order of Fundamentalist Utilitarian Nationalists (NOFUN for short).

BELZEBUBS (THE BOOK) Out March 19th via Top Shelf Productions

As editor in chief of Pittsburgh Music Magazine, a lot of emails, IG and Facebook messages, and personal requests come across my radar. As hard as it is to sort through and give attention to everything it is amazing at how much stuff there is out there to keep a music nerd entertained these days. A few years ago I got turned on to Belzebubs, a cartoon on IG that captured my interest primarily for the fact that its characters were all in death metal corpse paint. I was pretty pumped when I heard about the release of a Belzebubs book in America. After just watching the sad tale of Mayhem in the movie Lords of Chaos last night, it was with welcome arms that I sat down to read some black metal humor! The new book from artist JP Ahonen is dare I say, brilliant. It is funny, irreverent, tongue in cheek, and an excellent gift for your darkest friend to brighten them up a bit.

Belzebubs is a “trve kvlt mockumentary” focusing on the everyday challenges of family life: raising kids, running a small business, and making time for worship. Except the kids are named Lilith and Leviathan, the business is a black-metal band, and the worship… isn’t exactly aimed upstairs.
In a few short years, what started out as improvised social-media doodles has now become a wildly successful webcomic with hundreds of thousands of fans. The irresistible cartooning of JP Ahonen (Sing No Evil) combines relatable slice-of-life humor with over-the-top occult antics and references from metal music to Lovecraftian horror, makingBelzebubs a devil of a good time.
This hilarious hardcover is available now via Top Shelf Productions. The book is available for pre-order from AmazonBarnes & NobleIndiebound, directly from the publisher, or anywhere books are sold.

More about the Author:JP Ahonen is the author of two Sunday newspaper comic strips (Villimpi Pohjola and Puskaradio) published weekly in his native Finland. He also appeared in volumes 4-8 of the beloved Flight anthology series. His debut graphic novel Sing No Evil, co-written with KP Alare, gathered international critical acclaim, and he was the guest of honor for the 2018 Helsinki Comics Festival.
After spending his teenage years immersed in making music and comics, Ahonen studied graphic design at the University of Lapland. Today, he works as a full-time comic book artist and teaches classes in schools & universities. JP lives in Tampere, Finland with his family.

“The only thing funnier than Belzebubs is how much black metal elitists will complain about it being ‘false’ on message boards.”-Loudwire-
“Guaranteed To Turn Your Corpse-Painted Frown Upside Down!”-The Grim Tower-
“Belzebubs is a fun read if you like metal music, especially if you grew up on comic strips like Calvin and Hobbes.”-The Metal Crypt-
“Strikes that delicate balance between adorable and totally f***ing metal.”  -Talking Comics-
“Belzebubs takes the blueprint of the modern nuclear family and gleefully twists it into a counter-culture extravaganza that would make Charles Addams throw the horns high… one of the funniest, most instantly relatable and charming books it has been my pleasure to read in many a year.”-Mass Movement-
“A visual sonic boom.”-The Village Voice-

PLUS: Watch for the official Belzebubs album, coming in April 2019 from Century Media!

● GWAR is a Grammy-nominated, American rock band known for theatrical live shows. Their latest album, “The Blood of Gods” is nothing less than a sacred text chronicling the rise of humanity against their makers, and the massive battle between GWAR and the forces of all that is uptight and wrong with the world. Along the way, the band challenges the sins of their great mistake, from politics, pollution, and organized religion, to fast food, and factory farming. Humans are shown as what they are; a parasitic disease that must be eradicated before they suck the planet dry. Born of adversity, “The Blood of Gods” is a sonic scar…a question asked and answered…  More information at www.gwar.net/

First-Ever Biography of The Cars’ Benjamin Orr to Be Released 11/11

Vermont Writer Milliken Has Book Deal to Publish

Biography of The Cars’ Benjamin Orr

BELLOWS FALLS, VERMONT – Veteran music journalist Joe Milliken recently announced a publishing deal with the Lanham, Maryland-based publisher Rowman & Littlefield Publishers to produce his first book, a biography about the late Benjamin Orr. Orr was the co-founder, co-lead singer, and bassist for the platinum-selling rock band The Cars. Titled Let’s Go! Benjamin Orr and The Cars, a release date is set for November 11, 2018.

9781538118658Often considered the band’s heartthrob, Orr possessed an incredible voice, diverse musical talent and rare stage presence, all balanced by a magnetic, yet enigmatic personality, striking good looks and a relentless determination to reach rock stardom. Born Benjamin Orzechowski (aka “Benny Eleven Letters”) and raised in the Cleveland suburb of Parma Heights, Orr was, prior to becoming a world-famous rock star with The Cars, a teen star as a house band musician for the nationally syndicated television show Upbeat.

A few years later Ben met his musical partner, Ric Ocasek, and by 1976 their quest for the perfect blend of songs, bandmates and musical landscape finally materialized as The Cars. They would go on to sell over 30 million albums worldwide resulting in 15 “Top 40” hits.

From his early success in Cleveland through his stardom with The Cars, to his solo band efforts and eventual rebirth with the emerging supergroup Big People, this definitive account of Orr’s rock-and-roll life is not a backstage “tell-all,” but the story of a charismatic musician with a vision, a sense of adventure and unwavering perseverance. Orr passed away much too young at 53, but he achieved his dream through hard work and determination, a long road that began in Cleveland and culminated with The Cars coming back to his hometown to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in April of 2018.

This first-ever biography about Orr spans 11 years in the making, as Milliken draws together interviews with over 120 family members, friends, bandmates and music associates from Orr’s life, as well as many unpublished and never before seen photos from private collections, to reveal an intimate portrait of one of classic rock’s great talents.

Third Man Books to publish Benjamin Myers’ “The Gallows Pole” in the US

The Gallows Pole may well turn out to be 2017’s His Bloody Project.
It’s a windswept, brutal tale of eighteenth-century Yorkshire told in starkly beautiful prose.”
“Atmospheric alt-crime
at its best.”
“From the half-forgotten history of northern working men on the brink of the Industrial Revolution,
Myers has unearthed a powerful story which he tells with great vigour.”
Third Man Books is thrilled to announce that it will be the exclusive US publisher of Benjamin Myers‘ celebrated historical novel The Gallows Pole (2017), slated for a winter 2019 release. The novel, which won the Walter Scott Prize for historic fiction and is on its fifth print run in the UK, received global acclaim for its portrayal of the “coining” gangs of 1760s Yorkshire.
Myers, the first UK author to ink a publishing deal with TMB, said:
“It’s a long way from Mytholmroyd, West Yorkshire to Nashville, Tennessee, but I’ve long been a fan of Third Man Records and their exciting new literary wing, Third Man Books, too. Jack White and his pals have been using their success in the best possible way: by pumping resources back into underground culture. When they got in touch out of the blue to ask ‘What have you got?’ I jumped at the chance to work with them. The Gallows Pole has been an underground, word-of-mouth independent success in the UK, and in Third Man Books (Winter, 2019) it feels like it has found the perfect home in the US.”
Benjamin Myers
“We love everything about this book, how it was written and Mr. Myers himself,” Third Man’s Ben Swank said. “One of our many pre-occupations is mini-universes created by real artists, and with The Gallows Pole Ben Myers has crafted a living breathing landscape of time and place haunted with ghosts and rich with larger-then-life characters re-born straight from real (bloody) history. We couldn’t be happier to have Myers, our very first UK author, on Third Man Books, and we’re delighted to bring this beast of a novel to American shores.”

PLAY IT LOUD: An Epic History of the Style, Sound, and Revolution of the Electric Guitar by Brad Tolinski & Alan di Perna

Brad Tolinski & Alan di Perna
Foreword by Carlos Santana

Play it Loud is a dynamic history of the electric guitar, but more importantly, it’s about the artists who painted universal tones, colors, textures and movements on the world canvas… Brad and Alan get inside the note of the political and cultural significance of the guitar… To be able to touch someone and change their molecular structure with just one note is very powerful. One note can bring someone back from the edge, make lovers come together, create life, end wars and make you shed tears of joy and sorrow at the same time. It is called the universal tone and for me it comes from six things, every time I plug in my guitar: stay genuine, honest, sincere, true, authentic and for real on every song. Play It Loud is all of these things, on every page.”
-Carlos Santana, Grammy Award-winning artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee,
from the foreword
Featuring Interviews With…
Les Paul
Billy Gibbons
Paul Reed Smith
Keith Richards
Jeff Beck
Peter Townshend
Jimmy Page
Steve Vai
Ted Nugent
Billie Joe Armstrong
Jack White
Kerry Keane
Dan Auerbach
Patti Smith
…and dozens more

“The authors trace the evolution of the guitar nicely up to the present, writing knowledgeably of the merits and demerits of Japanese knockoffs, Pete Townshend-inspired amp stacks, and the contributions of mad-dog collectors to the whole rock ‘n’ roll genre….the authors are geeky enough to bring freshness to chestnuts through technical nuggets aplenty….The electric guitar changed the world, and Tolinski and di Perna impressively reveal its epic story.”-Kirkus, STARRED review
“A comprehensive history of the electric guitar…The authors engagingly explore the importance of amplifiers on artists’ sounds, particularly the Vox amps used by the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix’s manipulation of feedback. Beat-up thrift shop guitars used by experimental bands such as Sonic Youth and more traditional garage rock groups such as the White Stripes are highlighted, representing a path for innovating guitar sounds in an era when prices have rendered classic models largely inaccessible.“-Publishers Weekly
“It’s all here: everything knowable now becomes known about the plugged-in ax that changed the world.  A comprehensive history of the electric guitar in cultural context is something long wanted, awaited and needed. At long last, it has arrived.”-Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top guitarist/vocalist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee

Play It Loud is a fascinating, elegantly written, page-turning account of how a musical  weakness-the guitar’s inherently low volume-led to the development of the instrument that transformed contemporary music and culture: the electric guitar.   It’s all here-the history, the science, the musicians, and of course, the stringed beauties and the sounds they helped create.  An essential addition to any serious guitarist’s library.”
-Jonathan Kellerman, New York Times bestselling author of The Murderer’s Daughter

“Brad Tolinski and Alan di Perna’s Play It Loud is a marvelous survey of how the electric guitar has rocked its way into the hearts and minds of millions of music lovers. This is a rich trove of unforgettable anecdotes and vignettes. Highly recommended!”
-Douglas Brinkley, New York Times bestselling author of Rightful Heritage

The electric guitar as we know it is a symbol of freedom, rebellion, and louder-than-life rock and roll, played and treasured by our best rock musicians of the past century. You probably hear their music-the influence of the electric guitar and its storied history-every day. But have you ever wondered how we got here?
Veteran music writers Brad Tolinski (former editor-in-chief of Guitar World) and Alan di Perna have teamed up to give us an incredible and unprecedented musical history in PLAY IT LOUD: An Epic History of the Style, Sound, and Revolution of the Electric Guitar (Doubleday; Publication Date:October 25, 2016), with a foreword by Carlos Santana.
In roughly the span of one human lifetime, the electric guitar made an epic transition from novelty item to the most important musical instrument of the twentieth century and beyond. Featuring interviews with Les Paul, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Patti Smith, Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, and B.B. King, plus dozens of behind-the-scenes creators and players, Tolinski and di Perna use twelve landmark guitars-beginning with the Rickenbacker, up until the Airline guitar-to bring this untold history to life. We delve into the life of Leo Fender, a man who couldn’t play a note but who transformed the guitar into the explosive sound machine it is today, and how the famous Les Paul guitar came to be: a reaction from Gibson to rival Fender’s Telecaster. In my favorite chapter, we meet Paul Reed Smith (of PRS Guitars), a teenager who singlehandedly, and with a unique business model, convinces Ted Nugent, Peter Frampton, and his idol Santana to commission one of his handmade guitars.
The authors take us from the Roaring Twenties-when the electric guitar was born out of the need to “make this thing louder“-through the ever-changing rock movements of blues, swing, surf, folk, heavy metal, retro-garage and post-punk over the next ten decades. We meet a young Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry, and Bob Dylan; we see the very purposeful guitar choices of the Beatles and the Stones. We learn how the electric guitar’s earliest pioneers, among them Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman, evolved into today’s modern rockers, like Jack White and Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), who both, while continuing to innovate, actually bring many forms of the earliest electric guitar back onto the stage.
PLAY IT LOUD is a fascinating-and very fun-history of the electric guitar that will forever change the way we think about and listen to music.

Book Review: “One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager”

Let me start by saying that if I had this book in my possession twenty-five years ago I would definitely be in a different place right now in my life and I certainly could have been a much better asset for the bands I managed.  Not that I have any regrets, but instead of watching “Almost Famous” and just wondering how one goes about getting on the road with the band, this book actually gives you a step by step guide.  Mark Workman lays out such a comprehensive strategy to becoming a working tour manager that if one has the will, Workman provides the way.

Mark Workman has been a successful tour manager and lighting designer in the music business since 1983. His list of past and present clients includes Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Machine Head, Danzig, Mudvayne, Dio, Queens of the Stone Age, Devildriver, Soulfly, Sepultura and many others.

As a lighting designer, Mark Workman has designed high-impact lighting performances for many music tours, including the infamous Clash of the Titans (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Alice In Chains, & Suicidal Tendencies) in 1990/1991 and American Carnage 2010 (Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax & Testament), as well as for many music videos and live DVDs such as Machine Head’sElegies DVD filmed at Brixton Academy in London, Megadeth’s Rust In Peace Live DVD shot at the Hollywood Palladium, and Testament’s Dark Roots of Thrash Live DVD shot at the Paramount Theater in Huntington, NY.

“One For The Road: How To Be A Music Tour Manager” starts of  with a very strong endorsement by Alex Skolnick of Testament, of which Mark Workman was the lighting director then later manager.  These are the topics that the book explores:

Part 1 tells you how I got started as a tour manager and why I wrote this book.
Part 2 teaches you how to organize a concert tour and:
create a complete and accurate tour budget;
hire the best road crew;
lease the right tour bus and safest driver;
book hotels and air travel the right way;
create a proper backstage pass system and where to get it made;
deal with foreign artist tax for your band;
apply for overseas visas and work permits for your entourage;
create a tour book and the vital information it should contain;
coordinate trucking and air cargo;
Introduction
xiii
hire sound and lighting systems for your tour;
understand tour riders and contracts;
prepare ATA carnets and equipment manifests;
get backdrops, scrims and stage sets made;
prepare your tour accounting and a lot more.
Part 3 shows you how to get organized and properly advance each show and:
what you should know about stage plots and input charts;
preparing your pre-advance package;
making a proper advance sheet;
how to advance each show;
advancing your cash requirements and much more.
Part 4 guides you through an entire show day and shows you:
what it takes to be a tour manager running a music tour;
the mechanics of how to do press, meet-and-greets, and in-stores;
the proper way to do your guest list each day;
the right way to handle venue security;
how to do your daily tour accounting correctly;
how to do your show settlement each night;
important information about merchandising, foreign currencies, and more.
Part 5 shows you how to:
promote yourself so you can build your successful career;
find your first job as a tour manager;
and the road hazards to avoid.

That list speaks volumes, but the content definitely backs it up.  Add to that Workman’s writing style that is very smooth, humorous at times, and easy to understand, and you have one hell of a how to guide.  The promise of a series of these books is very enticing and long overdue.  It would not be surprising to see Berklee School of Music or The Musicians Institute making this book, or eventually the series, part of their curriculum…it’s that good.

If you want to get into the music business, are in the music business already, or are like me, and just fascinated with the music business, you will find this to be a treasured find.

Mark Workman is also a former boxing writer whose feature articles have appeared on BoxingScene and Fox Sports.

LOUDER THAN HELL THE DEFINITIVE ORAL HISTORY OF METAL IS KILLER

Got mycopy of Louder Than Hell in the mail yesterday…wow.  Really, no B.S. No filler, all killer.  I read a ton of rock bios and rock related books every month; actually I read a ridiculous amount.  Half of those books are decent, a quarter complete garbage, the other quarter is split between excellent and “how the fuck did this get published?”.  Louder Than Hell falls in the category of “I will now devour this, keep your grubby hands off of it, no you can’t borrow it, and yes it’s a bit beat up ‘cuz I keep going back to it again and again”.  Yep, it’s that cool.  There really is nothing like getting the story straight from the people in the middle of the shit, deep and dirty in the trenches.  And that is what this book gives you.  If you are a fan of rock, metal, music in general, you owe it to yourself. Get this book!

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal is in stores TODAY! Compiled from over 400 interviews conducted by respected music journalists Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman, LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal (It Books; May 14, 2013; Hardcover; $32.50) is a chronological history of heavy metal, told through the words of the men and women who created it, played it, re-invented it, and continue to rock it.

Last night (May 13), co-authors Jon Wiederhorn and Katherine Turman threw a hugely successful public party and signing at Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY. An in-depth Q&A was moderated by That Metal Show’s Don Jamieson and renowned music photographer Stephanie Cabral (her gorgeous, full-color photos can be seen in the book) also joined the session. The event was such a huge success that the venue actually ran out of beer and the authors ran out of books to sign! Press and photographers came out in droves. See below for some photos from last night, taken by well-known New York photographer Greg Cristman.

On a related note, Jon and Katherine visited the Rock N’ Roll Heaven and Old Bridge Metal Militia Reunion Concert and Fundraiser in Freehold, NJ this weekend to witness the stellar line-up and sell signed books for charity. Again, all books were sold out before the end of the show and the authors were able to raise over $400 in proceeds to donate to victims of Superstorm Sandy.

The amount of positive reaction that LOUDER THAN HELL has received so far is staggering, as the quotes above can attest to. Not surprisingly, LOUDER THAN HELL was already being used as an official source even before the book release.  This book is being recognized as a credible, definitive guide to the history of heavy metal.  As published in the New York Times on May 3, the paper of Record referred to the new book LOUDER THAN HELL: The Definitive Oral History of Metal” to gain further insight into their story.

Revolver senior editor Wiederhorn and Nights with Alice Cooper producer Turman dug deep into their extensive list of contacts to uncover never-before-heard stories, eye-opening admissions and the truth behind metal’s most explosive legends. Candid and confessional commentary comes straight from icons of the genre, including: Ronnie James Dio, Ozzy Osbourne, Bruce Dickinson, Eddie Van Halen, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Lita Ford, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Axl Rose, Slash, Corey Taylor, Dave Mustaine, Chuck Schuldiner, Lemmy Kilmister, King Diamond, Dave Grohl, Trent Reznor, Slayer’s Kerry King, Phil Anselmo, Rob Zombie and more. With an introduction by Scott Ian of Anthrax and an afterword by Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and with two 16-page photo inserts, with some never-before seen candid shots by celebrated rock photographers Stephanie Cabral and Robert Matheu, this is the book metal fans have been waiting for.

The many musicians interviewed by these veteran journalists offer their take on their influences, touring, the music business, and songwriting, as well as their often-traumatic upbringings, battles with substance abuse, and bizarre sexual exploits. Industry insiders (including managers, record label executives, family members, friends, scenesters, groupies, journalists, and porn stars) provide additional insight.
From the creation of Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, to Judas Priest’s development of the leather-and-studs look, to Metallica introducing the world to thrash, to the inception of Ozzfest, to Faith No More accidentally creating the first hybrid of rap and metal, to the provocative exploits of the Sunset Strip scene, to the death and destruction surrounding Norwegian black metal, LOUDER THAN HELL gets to the meat of the metal matter:

  • Rob Halford of Judas Priest reveals how he kicked cocaine and alcohol in 1986 after tragically witnessing his boyfriend’s suicide and sought solace in spirituality, which has helped the Metal God stay clean to this day.
  • Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose talks about the early days of Guns N’ Roses, the making of the 36-million-copy-selling debut Appetite for Destruction, and how Robert Willams’ graphic cover art was censored.
  • Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi explains how he lost parts of his fingers while working a day job in a factory – and created homemade prosthetics so he could play guitar, which changed the tonality of the instrument and the sound of heavy metal forever.
  • Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson shares how he dug through his own vomit in search of the balloon of heroin he’d swallowed to avoid being arrested by the police, and then used that heroin to celebrate his victory over not getting busted.
  • Members of Metallica and Anthrax detail the horrifying events of 1986 when Metallica’s tour bus crashed and tipped over, crushing bassist Cliff Burton beneath it while the rest of the members escaped relatively unscathed.
  • Alice Cooper reveals how it was really wheelchair-bound members of his AUDIENCE who tore the live chicken apart during his fateful concert in Toronto, while Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne give first-person accounts of Ozzy biting the head off a dove while wasted during a high-level record company meeting, and decapitating a bat onstage during his Diary of a Madman tour.
  • Hellhammer, drummer of Norway’s pioneering black metal band Mayhem, talks about ex-vocalist Dead committing suicide and how guitarist Euronymous used a chunk of Dead’s brain to make a Mexican stew.
  • Biohazard guitarist Billy Graziadei details how gang bangers stabbed a member of the group’s posse with a hunting knife while shouting, “Payback, Motherfucker!” and how the band vowed to retaliate. Vocalist Evan Seinfeld also recounts his graphic sexual liaisons while on tour, and how they led to his career in porn.
  • Slipknot bassist Paul Gray (who died of an overdose at age 38 during the writing of LOUDER THAN HELL) discusses the evolution of the lineup; physical fights between band members, and his own struggles with addiction.

LOUDER THAN HELL explores the transformation of metal culture, with stories and anecdotes straight from the mouths of the most infamous and successful bands. Filled with hundreds of revealing interviews representing every type and era of heavy metal—from metal progenitors such as Blue Cheer, Led Zeppelin, and the MC5 to current day innovators including Slipknot, Mastodon, and Lamb of God—LOUDER THAN HELL is the ultimate look behind the curtain at one of our most dynamic, controversial and enduring musical genres.

Advance Praise for LOUDER THAN HELL:

“This is the best oral history I’ve read since Please Kill Me. Louder than Hell is the first book that really delivers the brutal truth from the mouths of the artists and key players themselves!

I couldn’t put it down.” —Matt Pinfield

Louder Than Hell comes straight from the twisted minds of rock icons and flows seamlessly through various eras of heavy metal. You hear from the guys that were there on the stage, in the pit, puking in the gutter. It brought back memories, and I even learned a few things I never knew. I really dig this book.”  —Riki Rachtman, DJ, VJ

“Books on the history of even something as cool as metal can be a bit antiseptic and boring—not this one. It’s the story straight from the horse’s mouth. Even better is when the horses have experimented with drugs and black out occasionally. . .” —Brendon Small, creator of Dethklok and Metalocalypse

“Who likes rock n roll here?? Well if you do, this is the book for you! Every rock has been overturned, every band has been analyzed, quoted, and lionized and every page offers a new fact or figure that you probably didn’t know. This is the definitive chronicle of all that is heavy metal and I’ve read them all!”  —Chris Jericho, Fozzy

“Katherine Turman and Jon Wiederhorn know metal. Louder than Hell is an amazing gathering of different breeds of heavy metal rockers telling the tales metal fans want to hear.”

—Tom Morello, Rage Against the Machine

“This is the book every metal fan should own. A fascinating high-octane chronicle of metal mayhem that takes readers on a wild ride, from metal’s earliest days to the head-banging present. I’m not saying this just because I’m in the book, but . . . if you love metal, great stories, and music history told by the people who made it, then Louder than Hell is a must-read.”

—Alice Cooper

Louder than Hell is a love letter to the misunderstood genre of heavy metal music, written by trusted companions who had a front row seat on the devil’s rollercoaster. The definitive chronological testimony by the people who were there, including some who are no longer with us.” —Mark McGrath, Sugar Ray and co-host Extra

“An amazingly comprehensive book on all eras and genres of hard rock and heavy metal. The stories and attention to detail make it an instant must for anyone who ever was or is a fan.”

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS: New Testimonial Video Featuring MAX CAVALERA of SOULFLY

Guys- I’ve got to tell you that this is a very awesome book.  It’s definitely one any metal fan needs or would cherish as a gift.  This is not a read as much as a list of all things metal that make you think back, discover, argue, and maybe even move ahead.  Pittsburgh Music Magazine devoured our copy and it’s already pretty dogeared around here!

See what the press is saying about THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS:

A “Lovingly compiled bible of all things metal.” – Entertainment Weekly

The lists are literary (“Best Metal Blogs”), humorous (“Completely Unnecessary Heavy Metal Subgenres”) and fight-stirring (“The Best Metal Albums Ever!”). – New York Times

The Merciless Book Of Metal Lists, compiled by Howie Abrams and Sacha Jenkins, is the ultimate look at the world of heavy metal via the ease and convenience of a list. No stone is left unturned here, and I mean no stone. If you think you have a list about metal that isn’t in this book, chances are you’re wrong. Both Jenkins and Abrams have exhaustively researched and brainstormed Merciless and delivered a look at their beloved genre that is informative and fun.” – Iann Robinson, CraveOnline.com

“If you love metal and you love lists like I do, you must check this book out.” – Richard Christy, Charred Walls of the Damned/The Howard Stern Show

“I love lists and even more than loving them, I love to call them out for being wrong.  Normally it’s the bullshit that Rolling Stone or Revolver puts out that gets me the most angry, but now there’s a real book I can look at with my elitist mindset… There have been a lot of metal books coming out over the last year or so, this one actually has me interested.” – Sam Roon, SkullsnBones.com

“This April, there’s sure to be plenty of arguments coming between metalheads as ‘The Merciless Book of Metal Lists’ arrives in bookstores everywhere.” – Chad Childers, Loudwire.com

THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is out NOW! Today, Loudwire.com is exclusively hosting a new testimonial video for the book, this time featuring SOULFLY’s Max Cavalera! Max took a brief break from writing the new SOULFLY record to read the “The 10 Hardcore Punk Albums that Shaped Thrash Metal” list and comment on the book. Check out the video here: http://loudwire.com/the-merciless-book-of-metal-lists-receives-max-cavalera-approval/.

Till Death… shows the trials and tribulations of a boy as he tries to win the heart of the girl of his dreams (or nightmares). His misadventures hilariously lead him to torture, beatings, loss of vital internal organs, and worse…all in the name of love. Follow Ash Costello as she (literally) catches the eye and captures the heart of an innocent boy in love!

“Till Death… shows what it might be like to date a gothic matriarch, like Morticia, Elvira, Lily, etc. prior to them meeting their Gomez or Herman,” states photographer JEREMY SAFFER. “What would a boy would have to go through and endure to win her heart? We really tried to capture the comedic aspects of romantic goth culture and horror, giving the book a Addams/Tales From The Crypt style sense of humor.”

“Jeremy is such a doll to work with,” adds Ash Costello. “I can be kind of a pain, as most girls tend to be, but he always made me feel so comfortable and confident and really excited about what we were doing. His vibe during the entire process made me so excited to share this project with the world! I cannot wait to shoot more!”

Touted as being “the most opinionated compendium ever written concerning Heavy Metal”, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is comprised of 208 jam-packed pages representing all that is glorious across the world of Heavy Metal.

Presented in the form of dozens of factual, random and often outrageous lists, this book flies the flag for true metalheads, as well as the curious observer. Where others have ventured to simply focus on who is best, THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS dares to call many out for being the worst. It points out the triumphs, as well as the miserable failures concerning metal, and recklessly opines on each and every aspect of it, from a diehard fan’s point-of-view.

The requisite collections of the mightiest guitarists, drummers, vocalists etc. are in there, however, TMBML leaves no stone unturned, often blurring the lines separating fact and hilarity. You want to know about album covers that feature goats on them? What Motorhead icon Lemmy’s warts might tell you if they could speak? The achievements Iron Maiden would never have reached had their original vocalist Paul Dianno remained in the band? Well then, this book is for you.

The foreword for THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS comes from one of the most respected names in the genre, Slayer guitarist extraordinaire Kerry King, with a candid and passionate afterword from Pantera/Down frontman Philip Anselmo. There are numerous other contributions from band members the likes of Scott Ian (Anthrax), Gary Holt (Exodus), Max Cavalera (Sepultura/Soulfly), Danny Lilker (Nuclear Assault/Brutal Truth), Katon W.DePena (Hirax) and many others. Additionally, several lists have been contributed by industry luminaries such as Jon & Marsha Zazula; the very people responsible for first bringing groups like Metallica, Anthrax and Testamant to the world at large, Metal Blade Records CEO Brian Slagel, radio personality Eddie Trunk, former Roadrunner Records (current Nuclear Blast) A&R guru Monte Conner and more. Hell, even rapper MC Serch is featured talking about his days weeding through Slayer’s fan mail while working at Def Jam.

There is no music community on earth quite like that of Heavy Metal, and THE MERCILESS BOOK OF METAL LISTS is its bible. Metal fans thrive on debating each and every detail about the music and it’s performers, from recording production, to album cover art, to band members’ appearance – no stone is left unturned…EVER. TMBML is designed for the lot, who enthusiastically engage in and thrive on such arguments.

New Jersey Writer/Author BRIAN ABERBACK Pens New Educational Unauthorized Rockography, “BLACK SABBATH: Pioneers of Heavy Metal”

Esteemed New Jersey writer and author BRIAN ABERBACK has penned a new, educational Black Sabbath book, being released with Enslow Publishers, Inc. The book, titled Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal, is an unauthorized “rockography” that transforms the extensive knowledge about Black Sabbath that Aberback has amassed over the years to the page for future music enthusiasts and students alike to enjoy.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is the only Black Sabbath biography written for middle and high school students. Thoroughly researched, annotated and highly informative, this book is an appealing read for all ages and a great way for parents to introduce their kids to some of the music they love and grew up with. This book chronicles one of rock’s most legendary band’s careers from its formation to the present day and does a superb job of conveying the group’s ups and downs, not glossing over any details while staying age-appropriate. Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is available in high-quality library bound hardcover as well as softcover editions and can be found wherever books are sold online.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal has already been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Library and Archives and sits on the shelves of libraries throughout the United States to New Zealand, Singapore and the United States Army Base in Heidelberg, Germany.

Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal is part of The Rebels of Rock series from Enslow Publishing Inc. The Rebels of Rock books have a list price of $31.93 and a 25% discount price for Schools and Libraries of $23.95. Other books in The Rebels of Rock series include “rockographies” on Aerosmith, Def Leppard, The Clash, The Ramones, and The Rolling Stones.

BRIAN ABERBACK is a veteran music journalist specializing in hard rock and heavy metal. Aberback’s encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal and hard rock spans numerous genres. His interview list is a who’s who of heavy metal and hard rock legends, including Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Overkill, Testament and Mercyful Fate. His work has appeared in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, and on news and music websites. Many of his stories have been published in The Record, the largest daily newspaper in Northern New Jersey.

What sets Aberback apart, in addition to his strong writing style and dedication to his craft, has been his passion for giving heavy metal bands a shot at attracting new audiences through mainstream newspaper exposure. Over the years he’s introduced such bands as Nile, Cradle of Filth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, Opeth, Arch Enemy, The Haunted and many, many more, through the pages of The Record and other publications, to music fans, and even metal fans, who likely would have never heard of these bands. Not often do you find daily newspaper writers publishing stories about the likes of D.R.I., Diamond Head, Everytime I Die, Iced Earth or The Gathering.

***An articulate and well-informed speaker with a vast knowledge of the history of rock-and-roll, musically and socially, with a specific emphasis on heavy metal and hard rock, BRIAN ABERBACK is available for book talks, panel discussions and as an expert commentator for television and radio programs.

Check out some great reviews on Black Sabbath: Pioneers of Heavy Metal:

“Refreshingly levelheaded and loaded with sourced quotes, it’s that rare middle-grade biography (or “rockography,” as the title page insists) that is able to trace a band’s history, revel in its rock awesomeness, and be blunt about such things as drug abuse, all the while keeping things at an age-appropriate keel.”
–Booklist

“Through this book, old and new fans alike learn about the band’s history and impact on the music industry.”
–Children’s Literature
